October 2016 edition

“Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help create the fact”. William James With further changes to our education system, in particular the proposed reintroduction of Grammar Schools once again placing education standards in the spotlight, it made a refreshing change to speak with Teen Motivator Kevin Mincher this week. His work revolves around our young people needing not only academic lessons, but also lessons in life, happiness, resilience, and confidence building. I look forward to hearing more from Kevin as he works with staff, parents and students to ensure students develop a positive mindset to assist them in the ever changing world. I mentioned at this time last year that I am always just a little bit sad as the nights begin to draw in. Another summer having passed by, without me managing to spend as much time enjoying the outdoors as I had planned to! This year the plentiful late summer sunshine has stopped me noticing the evenings drawing in quite so much, and the addition of our little puppy to the family has definitely meant that I have spent more time outside. The November issues will be delivered to you late October. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 7th October. Please note that this is actually the first Friday of the month and the closing date is usually the 2nd Friday so don’t get caught out by the early close caused by needing the magazines to be with distributors before lots of them disappear on half term holidays! Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, Unfortunately we have had a very challenging couple of weeks. At least 60% of our dogs came down with a mystery infection and 16 had to be hospitalised on drips. This has been a very stressful time for us all, however fingers crossed there have been no new cases in 6 days and all have responded well to treatment. A very big thank you to Balby Vets on Springwell Lane, also Dowdings in Gainsborough without your help and understanding we are sure we would not have been able to come through this harrowing time unscathed . Our Sanctuary was closed for two weeks as a precaution so we really sorry for the inconvenience this caused everyone but we needed to keep the infection contained. So far the Vet’s bills are well over £3,000 and rising. Obviously if anyone wishes to make a donation to help us that would be wonderful. If you would like to take a look at our Face Book page we have an appeal on the Just Giving site. We recently had a Yard/Table top sale and raised nearly £500 which was a brilliant result and will help towards the recent vets bills. The Table top is held on the last Sunday in the month, the next ones being 25th September and 30th October from 10 am until 12pm. A student special day will be included on this date too, refreshments will be available with yummy homemade cakes, so come along and bag a bargain . A big thank you for everyone that contributed to-wards this amazing total and we hope to see you again soon.

It was a very sad day when she brought me here and then left me behind. I was luckily rehomed quite quickly and I settled into my new home just fab. Unfortunately things went badly wrong when I scratched the toddler. After that she was scared of me and so here I am looking again for a new family to love.

We will also be back fund raising at M&S on Wheatley Hall Road in October so watch out for us and say hello. 6 beautiful puppies have been brought to us via the police, there has been an ongoing cruelty court case and they needed the puppies as evidence, however they have just released them and they are now ready for rehoming. As all puppies they are very playful and bouncy and just waiting for their forever loving home. Please be aware we do not rehome puppies with children under 5 years of age. As with all our dogs we would also need your fence to be at least 5ft high with a secure locked gate. A big thank you to Worksop Wheelers Mark and Andy they raised a whopping £1115 for our Charity you are amazing guys. We hope everyone has enjoyed their summer break and hope to see you all soon.

30th August was a fantastic night at Rossington Miners Welfare with the final of Rossington’s Got Talent.

Rossington s Got Talent This was one of a number of activities that made up the RAP programme that was put on for children in Rossington in the 6 weeks holiday. RAP was funded by Recycoal and Rossington Parish Council. Mandy Holden from Miners Welfare worked with Darius Cooper of Limitless Events to put on a very professional event. This was helped by having Sallie Lax who was a finalist in Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, with her grandad – (2 Grand) and Russ Graham owner of a town centre music venue. as 2 of the judges. The other judges were Pastor Eric Simpson from the Baptist Church, Alex Barrett, Manager of Rossington Leisure Centre, Shelagh Foweather Childrens Minister from St Michaels Church, Barry Johnson, Chair of Rossington Parish Council and Rachael Blake, DMBC Councillor for Rossington and Bawtry Ward.

Much of this work looked like it may have been produced on an Art Foundation course. It was poorly made for one thing, and much of it dull. However there were two works which were so powerful as to knock the rest of it into a cocked hat, both were dealing with realm of abuse, brilliantly executed, completely compelling and powerful. With studios in the Swiss village of Sent and Beijing, China, as well as homes in Rio de Janeiro and Niger, (I wonder why we need to know this? instantly my ire is up, first a pretentious name, then a seemingly jetset practice) the exhibition reflects Vital’s nomadic and diverse practice, including paintings and works on paper, indoor pieces made from plaster, silver, gold, marble, glass and coal, and outdoor sculptures in stainless steel and bronze. So apart from an artist with a confusing name what will you see? …. Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake All too often as a councillor, due to a lot of my time sorting out important problems that are affecting individuals or the whole community, it is easy to forget to mention the many brilliant things that are happening in Rossington ( there are lots of them) so I am pleased to start this update with Rossington’s Got Talent. I have also provided updates on other issues that I have been contacted about and in response to a question from Stuart, I have provided details about DMBC’s complaints procedure. Rossington’s Got Talent The final of RGT took place on 30 August and I was delighted to be a judge. Details about the event are included elsewhere including the names of the children who took part who were all fantastic. It was great to be a judge along with Sallie Lax who was a finalist in Britain’s Got Talent in 2009 and as well as being a fantastic judge, her singing in the final was wonderful. RGT was just one of many activities provided over the summer for children and young people and next year we are planning an even bigger and better 6 weeks programme. I have spoken to a few parents who weren’t aware of the activities available so next time we will make sure that the information is so well available in the village that everyone is aware of what is happening. Traffic and Lorries in the Village This is the no 1 concern from residents who contact me; whether Bankwood Lane, Sheepbridge Lane, Grange/ Central/Queen Marys; the new link road, Stripe Road, Holmescarr and Littleworth to name just of the few of the areas that are a problem. Since May when I was elected I have had to learn a lot about lorries, planning permission and restrictions that can apply and the most frustrating aspect is that unless planning restrictions were applied when a development received planning consent, there is little legislation that can be applied. This is the case for DHL and their contracted companies who have a route that they have to follow, but for lorries visiting Bankwood Lane for example, planning restrictions were not applied regarding routes that had to be taken, nor the number of lorries that could access the site, but there are restrictions on the times that they can operate. Requests to have a crossing in the village have resulted in the Highways Dept. conducting 2 surveys both at the Grange/Central junction and on West End Lane but at our meeting with Highways recently, we were told that neither site was busy enough to warrant having a crossing. Highways have agreed to do another survey on Sheepbridge Lane so once this is completed residents will be made aware. After weeks of asking, Highways have now covered up the signs on Stripe Road and at the roundabout for Bankwood Lane but the requested signs for the 1st roundabout after the M18 to include Bankwood Lane 34 ROSSINGTON TODAY

Bankwood Lane An update with useful numbers on has now been circulated to residents in the area and at a recent meeting with residents the Environmental Health Team are carrying out detailed monitoring of how residents are being affected by the recycling companies at Bankwood Lane. At one of my surgeries this month I was asked by Stuart, what DMBC’s complaints procedure is and this is provided below. Complaints procedure There are three stages to the Council’s Complaints Procedure, which are as follows: Stage 1 – Local Resolution - At this stage a senior officer within the service area complained about will investigate your complaint and will respond directly to you. Stage 2 – Complaint Investigation - If you are unhappy with the outcome or response to stage 1, you can appeal and ask for your complaint to be looked at again. A manager or senior officer who has not previously been involved in your complaint will be appointed to investigate the issues and respond to you directly. Stage 3 – Local Government Ombudsman - If you are unhappy with the stage 2 investigation result you have the right to approach the Local Government Ombudsman who are the commissioners for administration in England. You can approach the Local Government Ombudsman at any time, however, they will not usually investigate a complaint from a customer unless it has been dealt with through the Council’s complaints procedure first. Bankwood Lane Industrial Estate Update from the Environment Agency - August 2016 The Environment Agency is responsible for regulating sites with environmental permits. On the Bankwood Industrial Estate the sites they are focussing on are the Attero Recycling Limited and Morris and Co sites. The environmental permits have conditions in them which control environmental risk. If the sites operate according to the EA permits they should not cause environmental problems like noise, dust and odour. Where the sites are causing problems outside the boundary of the site it is the EA’s respo onsibility to take appropriate action to get them into compliance. Over the last 18 months or so there havve been problems from the two sites and the EA have taken enforcement action againstt both operators. The most recent problem on n the industrial estate has been that of odou ur and Ⱦ LHV ZKLFK FDPH WR D KHDG LQ PLG -XQH H ZKHQ the EA received around 15 complaints over a period of 4 days. ΖQ PLG -XQH WKH ($ FRQGXFWHG D MRLQW investigation with Doncaster Council in nto the sources of the odours. They conducted d an
