Welcome to the
September 2019 edition
Today
“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” John F. Kennedy Back to school time again already! Good luck to all those starting school or nursery for the first time, moving to a new school, heading off to College, University, Apprenticeship or first job. The holidays do seem to have gone quickly to me, but then they always do! This year I was lucky to enjoy a break in Croatia, where 14 of us enjoyed the amazing coastline and scenery, swam in the pool and sea, paddle boarded, pedaloed, took boat trips and enjoyed some great food and drink, as well spending lots of time relaxing and making some great memories. Back in July I took up the challenge to complete a Macmillan Mighty Hike - 26miles of the Thames path. I had just 2 weeks to prepare for the walk and raise a minimum of £250 for Macmillan. Fortunately, lots of dog walking, dancing, cricket and kettlebell training over recent months meant I was fit enough to complete the challenge, despite the limited preparation time. What I hadn’t fully appreciated was how long it takes to walk that distance, and how much my feet would hurt afterwards! A big thank you to Owen James at All for You Physio for providing a pre-walk treatment to ensure I was in good shape, and massive thanks to all those who sponsored me. £555 +gift aid has gone to Macmillan and my Just Giving page remains open if anyone else would like to donate to this amazing charity https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/paula-mickley

Cause for a Cuppa You blink and it’s gone (summer 2019). I hope you created some memories on purpose. There are some memories that just happen but I find the special ones need some prepping. In a “60 Second Sermon” for Radio Sheffield this month, I mentioned that memories don’t have to be “big” … just memorable.

ROSSINGTON BOWLING CLUB T
Hi Barry here, we are nearing the end of the bowling season now but there are still a few weeks left for anyone who wants to take up the opportunity and come along and have a go at this very underrated game which is enjoyed by many people in south Yorkshire of all ages. We have two first class bowling greens in Rossington with good facilities and pleasant surroundings. Sadly, although being in a prime position our numbers are dwindling.
Rossington is a very large village now, and there must be people out there who would enjoy this very social game. Please come along and have a go because we don't want to lose this facility. If there is anyone out there, who is interested, and in a position to offer us some sponsorship, however small, it would be of great help to us and be much appreciated. We are hoping that next season the club will continue to grow and remain a part of our community for many years to come. Thank you for reading this article. (chairman). 07512 636619

BRUCE’S HAPPY TAIL
rehoming work. T
Bruce, the American Bulldog, had a tough start in life, until he was rescued by the Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch of the RSPCA. Originally brought to the animal centre by an inspector as part of a welfare case, Bruce’s skin was in a terrible state. He was a lovely, affectionate and playful dog who loved people, long strolls in the paddock and playing with balls – he could certainly give Lionel Messi a run for his money! Despite being in such discomfort with his skin condition, he was a gentle and affectionate dog. After waiting for almost a year, he finally got a lucky break. A family arrived at the Animal Centre and fell in love with Bruce and offered him the forever home he deserved. Bruce is just one story – 890 animals were re-homed from the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre last year. The Branch’s mission is to rehabilitate and re-home vulnerable animals and this work relies on kind donations from the public and local businesses. Bruce’s story took place because of the support received from a variety of sources. The four RSPCA shops are a vital source of income (Maltby, Bawtry, Rossington and Thorne), and raise awareness of the Centre. Every purchase and donation helps the Branch to continue vital rehabilitation and

Other ways to help include volunteering some of your time or sponsoring rescue animals through the Safe Haven programme. At the Animal Centre there is a pet supplies store. The Branch also provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets.

THE SCHOOL CONTINUES
TO BE GOOD! T
On the 12th July 2019, Grange Lane Infant Academy received a visit by Ofsted. The inspector found that based on the evidence gathered during the short visit, that he was of the opinion that the school has demonstrated strong practice and marked improvement in specific areas. The report details how the school has the highest expectations and aspirations for all pupils and staff. The ‘can’t do yet’ point of view and belief that every child can achieve no matter what their background permeates the school. This means all pupils are improving year on year and more pupils are working at a greater depth than previously. Over the years there has been a strong focus on developing the learning environment, across the whole academy site. From the introduction of the 2 year old nursery, building a new nursery building with extensive outdoor provision so a seamless transition into main school and reception is possible, and modernisation of the KS1 classrooms. It is with delight that these improvements have been recognised and commended in the report. Mrs Chappell feels that in partnership with Governors, staff, parents, children and the local community, she is sure that the school will continue to strive towards excellence and would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has supported the academy at any point. If you would like to read the Ofsted report, you can find this on our website: www.gliacademy. org.uk and any comments or questions can be emailed to: info@gliacademy.org.uk

In the last year we have had a trip to Edinburgh with the older Brownies visiting the Castle, the Zoo and visiting a local Brownie pack. We also had a 2 night Pack Holiday at Walesby Forest Activity Centre where the girls took part in indoor climbing, zip wire, 3G swing and managed to escape from their escape room. We also delivered plants to elderly residents as a random act of kindness and took part in the Remembrance Parade in the village as well as visiting Rossington fire station. If your daughter would be interested in joining us then please register your interest at www. girlguiding.org/joinus and then a local leader will contact you with further information. LIFESTYLE
Dress for your Shape When it comes to looking good, it’s not your size or shape that matters, it’s the fit of your garments. Wearing the right clothes shouldn’t be about following the latest fashion trends; it should be about choosing what actually suits you and your body proportions to make you feel comfortable and confident. Women come in all shapes - the key is to know your proportions, and use fashion to accentuate your best features! When we dress, we are trying to present an image that is pleasing to the eye. We want to receive those compliments that tell us that we look great, because then, and only then, will we believe that we do look great! This allows us to feel good about ourselves.
are more along the lines of whether or not it will look good on you, without thinking about how will it accentuate your body shape so that it does look good on you. Colour is an important feature, and how we display it is the most important aspect.
Perhaps one of the most important reasons for having difficulty while selecting an outfit from your wardrobe would be the simple fact that the wardrobe is lacking in outfits that flatter your body shape. How many times have you played the “try on as many outfits as possible in 30 minutes” game while looking for the perfect outfit to wear, only to be left with the same decision and a mountain of clothes to put away? The actual problem is not that you have nothing to wear; it is that you have nothing in the wardrobe that flatters your figure/ colouring.
The aim should be to take the attention away from the aspect of our body that is the least pleasing to us and place it elsewhere. In order to accomplish this, you need to consider your body shape, decide which feature you wish to accent more, and discover how to accomplish that.
Here are some helpful tips:
Those of you who are top heavy and have a full bust will want to draw the eye to the lower portion of your physique. Wear a bolder color/pattern from the waist down, and a softer/plain colour above.
So, for many, the decision about “what to wear” is made as you purchase. Exactly how should you choose your outfits? Let’s start first by exploring how you currently go about selecting your clothing.
If you are thin everywhere, you will want to accentuate your figure by adding dimension. You can do this by choosing outfits that are loose and flowing, and by wearing horizontal patterns.
Many ladies are drawn first by the colors and patterns. Your thoughts
If you are bottom heavy and have full hips, you will want to select clothing
20
that draws the eye to the top of your body. You can accomplish this by wearing a splash of color or a bold print on the upper part of your figure, and a solid, darker color below the waist. For those of you who are wide everywhere, you will want to stay away from bold patterns or prints. Draw the eye to the upper portion of your torso to create a focal point. Those of you who have the envied luck to have a perfect hourglass figure have the easiest path of all. Also, remember that simple clothing that fits well is far better than fancier clothing that just “doesn’t look right.”

Just one note of caution - no sparklers please. Hot food available

Autumn will soon be here, the youngsters are returning to school and our thoughts are turning to…..Christmas!! Yes, before we know it Christmas will soon be here. We are busy planning to take Santa around the district and to the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. New for this year, we hope to have a tracker on the float so that the children can track Santa’s progress on Facebook. As always, we rely on an army of volunteers to help with the collections. If you can spare three hours or so (6 to 9) on any night from mid-December onwards please get in touch. If you would like to get involved or if you think we may be able to help you or a community project please get in touch. Lions Eye Health Programme Working to Save Sight
Globally there are 253 million people who are blind or have moderate to severe distance vision impairment (MSVI). 1.1 billion have near-vision impairment simply because they don’t have a pair of glasses. 75% of all blindness and MSVI is avoidable. 89% of people with visual impairment live in developing countries. Lions from all over the world support various international projects. We should not forget the two million plus people in the UK living with sight loss, that’s around one person in 30. They don’t all have guide dogs, and/ or a white cane, or wear dark glasses. The majority of these people are just like you and me, but don’t see so well. It is estimated that the official number of people registered can be multiplied by 3 or 4. We are happy to promote World Sight Day, 10th October to highlight the need for all of us to have our eyes tested regularly.

We are so grateful to everyone who has raised money on our behalf this past month. The Shoe Room in Priory Walk raised £1,135 which really took us by surprise! Stratstone BMW on Wheatley Hall Road held a coffee morning and afternoon tea at their showroom and made £194. Janine sent us photos of the food which made our mouth water. Space doesn’t allow us to mention everyone here who donated, but please check out our website for more information. Are you planning on taking part in one of the marathon or half marathon races (such as the Great North Run on 8th September) or any other sporting events? Or are you simply wanting to organise an event on our behalf? Please do get in touch with us as we can supply you with T-shirts, etc., and can advertise your event on our website.

MOVIE MAKERS
T
Started in the 1950's as Doncaster Cine Guild at the height of enthusiasm for cine film, Doncaster Movie Makers has evolved over the years, adapting to the changing film formats and equipment. But we are still essentially the same as the original members - keen, enthusiastic, amateur film makers, who help each other produce films and advise on new equipment and editing software. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced filmmaker, Doncaster Movie Makers exists to bring like-minded individuals together to share knowledge, have fun and explore the fascinating world of filmmaking - from script to screen. Or you might just like to watch films. We have demonstrations, visiting speakers and film competitions. As a Club we film local events and attractions, such as the Tour de Yorkshire. In 2019 we will be showing films on themes such as “What I did today” and holding competitions for films inspired by the word “AFT” and Music Videos.
The NuOla South Yorkshire Roosters are a team that participate in a high paced, non-contact and exciting version of American Football called ‘Flag Football’. American Flag Football is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. The aim of Flag Football is to stop the ball carrier from scoring by removing their flag. The Roosters compete in the Middle England Conference Division One League, and are ranked the number one team in that division in South Yorkshire. In the 2019 season, the Roosters finished 25th out of 40 teams in Division One in the United Kingdom. The team includes a mixture of both male and female players, aged 16 and over, from all over South Yorkshire and beyond. The team currently has 4 female players who represent Great Britain in Flag Football, and two male members who qualified through to the final stages of selection for Great Britain. The NuOla South Yorkshire Roosters are always looking to recruit new players to the team, whether they have experience of playing American Football or not. Just bring enthusiasm and a bottle of water, as the first three training sessions are free at Rossington, Doncaster; the Roosters training ground. Make a Property Trust Will How do they work?
For Property Trust Wills to be effective you must own your property jointly with your partner. Most partners own their home as joint tenants. This means when one dies the home will automatically pass to the survivor.
All for
£300 inc VAT*
We will alter the ownership from joint tenants to tenants in common. This means you own a distinct share which you can then leave into the Property Trust which grants the surviving spouse/partner a life interest in the home for their lifetime. Should the surviving spouse/partner need to go into a care home then only their share of the home is taken into account not the whole. Should your spouse/partner remarry or make a new Will after your death then your share of the home is protected for your beneficiaries. With arranged Care Home costs currently in the region of £600 per week, the cost of £300.00 is a small price to pay for the severance of joint tenancy and Wills. Jones & Co is probably the best known firm of local Solicitors, having offered personal and business legal advice to people in the area for more than 200 years. September Newsletter Rossington Parish Council
Chairman’s Report Hello fellow Rossington folk. You may be aware that the Parish Council does not on the whole have meetings in August, so the next full Parish Council meeting is at 7 pm on Tuesday 10 September 2019 at the Memorial Hall. As always the public are more than welcome to join us and have their say in the public session. On top of the usual adoption of minutes other agenda items are considering a grant for Rossington Main Junior Football Club, the Pride of Rossington Event, receiving an update on Brodsworth Way Pavilion, considering the new lighting on West End Lane and a trip to the new (Attero) Eco Power site in Hull. If any of these subjects interest you then please join us. Or you may have a subject you’d like the Parish Council to consider. If so contact Anne, the Clerk on 01302 864731 or email anne@ rossingtonparishcouncil.org.uk. Pride of Rossington 2019 Even though this is a rest month for the Parish Council work never stops. The deadline for the nominations for the Pride of Rossington has now passed so a decision will have to be made on who has won each category. I can’t tell you how difficult this is as ALL the nominations are truly worthy of winning. I must say though, I am a little disappointed in the up to 12 age group category. As a lifelong resident and local school governor I know there are so many great kids in Rossington, many of which truly do more than is expected of them. Maybe next year we’ll get more nominations so get your thinking caps on! Ros Jones, Doncaster’s elected Mayor is looking forward to the evening as much as we are. Rossington 3 Day Summer Festival Feedback from visitors and on Facebook confirmed that this years Summer Festival was the best yet with a footfall of over 4,500 people over the weekend. We were lucky with the weather though – just a tad cooler in the evening! Most of the visitors were Rossington residents but some were visiting Rossington for the first time and some were coming back to join family and friends. I lost count of the number of visitors who said they wished their Parish or Town Council did something similar in their area and how lucky local people were to have such an active and
36
interested Parish Council. We have taken note of all the feedback given to us, so next year’s festival will be even better. Some ideas taken on board are: liaising with local food outlets so they have a much more active role next year; promoting the open-mike session on Saturday afternoon; looking at potential bands (so if anyone can recommend one just let the Clerk know) and more. Flowerbeds and Planters What do YOU think of the flower beds this summer? I think AWS Landscapes have done us proud. I realise however, the sunshine and vast amounts of rain have really helped but driving around the village makes you realise how lovely the beds and planters are. The Keep Rossington Tidy group has also enhanced the village giving people a real sense of pride in their area. Rossington Market Place A meeting will take place in September 2019 with Drew Oxley and his team from Doncaster Council on how the marketplace could potentially be developed. If this is something that interests you look on our Facebook page or Website for the next Project Committee meeting agenda and have your say in the public session of that meeting. Christmas Lights I know some of you have seen staff from Christmas Plus around the village in the last couple of months, confusing you a little bit. To make sure the current lights and new lights are working they have to service the lights each year and leave some on for a couple of days to make sure they come on and off ok. Rest assured they will not come on now until the beginning of December. Once again we listened to residents and have introduced new lights on lampposts and trees and added more baubles and icicles to current trees. Once again we are the envy of so many Parish and Town Councils in the surrounding areas. Bye for now

UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS
RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors
Lots happening to update residents on this month but as always we are involved in lots of things that we don’t have room to tell you about so please do get in touch or pop into one of our surgeries to find out what is going on. It was great to chat to shoppers outside Asda and near the market this week and here directly about local concerns. All of the issues that you told us about will be addressed over the next few weeks. In this update we have provided information on:
We are constantly in touch with officers on resident’s behalf about lorries, parking and noise and smells as well as problems around the Iport and Lidl car park. After being told that lots of meetings are taking place but not seeing any improvement we contacted the Director at the council and the person responsible for the whole Iport development has agreed to meet with residents to hear their concerns. If you are being affected and do want to be included in the meeting do contact us. The update on the flies is that they are not coming from companies on Bankwood Lane and other sites are being visited. If you are experiencing problems with flies, please could you let us know so that Environmental Health can be made aware of it/visit to take samples.
Improvements in the village Bankwood Lane/Iport/Lidl developments DHL and the routing agreement Transport consultations Have your say on your area and Doncaster’s future Funding available for community groups
DHL and the routing agreement Residents are still complaining because DHL lorries are not following the agreed route. Again, this is an area that we are constantly contacting Council officers about and they have again contacted the company to remind them of their responsibilities. If this is affecting you, please do let us know.
Improvements in the Village Residents have contacted us about problems in various areas in the village as well as requests for dropped kerbs. A lot of weeds in gutters are being cleared, resurfacing of roads is being done and additional bins put in. An additional dropped kerb was requested in Firth Crescent which highways officers are doing – they take about 6 weeks to get them put in, but do let us know if you are struggling to safely cross roads and we will get in touch with Highways Officers. Bankwood Lane/Iport/Lidl developments It’s been over 4 years now since Attero/Eco power started using the land on the corner of Bankwood Lane as a lorry park affecting people who live nearby. A consultation took place in June and the majority of people who replied said it should be closed. Doncaster Council listened to this and issued the company with an enforcement notice meaning that they have stop using the site. Unfortunately for residents the company appealed against this decision and Doncaster Council can’t do anything to stop them using it until the appeal has been heard – it’s now out of the Council’s hands. The plans to build a link road from the Lidl roundabout to the site have not progressed because the company is waiting for the Environment agency to agree whether they can expand the site, take in more waste and have an indoor operation reducing the impact on residents.
38
Transport consultation As you may be aware, the Mayor of the Sheffield City Region has commissioned a review of bus services that will make recommendations regarding the future provision of bus services in South Yorkshire. The review is being chaired by Clive Betts MP and will cover a number of issues. Austerfield residents – please complete and highlight that you do not have a bus service; Bawtry residents please give your views on the existing service. You can complete the online survey at https://sheffieldcityregion.org.uk/southyorkshire-bus-review/ Have your say on what you want to see improved in Rossington and Doncaster Doncaster Council have launched a Doncaster Talks consultation asking residents 3 questions; what is good about your area; what would you like to see improved and what do you think Doncaster should focus on in the future. There is an online survey if you visit the Doncaster Council website; there are face-to-face events or if you cannot access the internet, I am happy for you to contact me to talk through your answers and I will ensure they are included. It is the first time the council have done this so I really hope residents take this opportunity to influence what happens locally and across the Borough.

ROSSINGTON COMMUNITY
LIBRARY T
Special thanks to the volunteers who have been organizing the popular and enjoyable children's activities throughout the school summer holidays. We hope that everyone has enjoyed the activities and taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge.
The on-line vote delivered the decision that the majority would like to see an evening parade, and so our recent meeting looked at what we need to do, in order to produce this in Autumn 2020. We have decided to re-use the spaceship from our 2019 Grand Parade and try to light it up this time. We will be researching ways to make lanterns based on themes associated with the spaceship. We are looking for inspiration for those themes from you. Post them on our Facebook page, if you can’t make our monthly meetings. We will have some workshops to show you how to make a lantern and how to light it, but we are also looking at designing a template so that you can make your own and then come and join the Parade. As a team, we hope to go to other Yorkshire towns to see their lantern and lamplight parades for ideas too. Have a look at the websites for Sharrow, near Sheffield, or Todmorden In West Yorkshire, to see what we could produce with our community’s help. The route is yet to be decided but it could well go further afield than we have so far and are considering an event at the end of it, to bring us all together to celebrate our joint efforts. Watch this space! Our next meeting is Tuesday, 24 September at 6 pm at Holmescarr in the café. Come and have a coffee or tea with us and bring your ideas and enthusiasm.
