Welcome

edition of Rossington Today.

A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken ~ James Dent

August already, and I hope that summer is still with us by the time you read this. What a fantastic July we have enjoyed, and what a difference it made to all the summer time events and end of term celebrations that could be enjoyed without the threat of rain. As I write this I am in the midst of sports days, school discos and end of term church services, a busy time for Mums as well as children!

The September issues will be delivered to you from 31st August, anything that you would like included should be with me by Saturday 3rd August. I know that this is very early, however, I would like to close the office and take some time off with my children this summer. They are growing up fast and there may be very few summers left where all 3 will have the luxury of the long school summer break, and I don’t want to look back and wish I had made more time to spend with them. So if you wish to submit something for inclusion in the September issues or to book any advertising space then you will need to get in touch straight away! Apologies if you are reading this a week or more after the initial distribution and have already missed the deadline.

A Summer of perfect memories I want to wish you a very bright “hello” from Cause for a Cuppa! As I am writing this, the warm breezes have been blowing and sun shining. It has been a long wait but it appears summer has finally arrived.

School has finished for the year. It is a strange thing that children look forward to the time of no more getting up and rushing about to find the lost shoe and school jumper that seems to somehow just evaporate. (Ever been there?) BUT in a matter of days (and certainly no more than 2 weeks), the words “I’m bored” come pouring out. Isn’t that an odd thing? What do parents/ carers do when that happens? I know it can be frustrating and we can easily wish for the school days to start up again … SOON! As a lad growing up on a farm, we had no neighbours. We had a black & white telly (that was broken half the

6 6

ROSSINGTON TODAY

time). The term “video game” was not even in the English vocabulary yet. Mum had very little money so a holiday was not in the cards. But what I do remember are some of the simple things … picking blackberries & helping mum make jam … bike rides … helping bale hay … basketball with a hoop up on the back wall of the house. Those are my memories and they are good ones. Why not make a decision that this summer will be a summer of memories. You may not have

much in the bank and a Butlins holiday may not be possible. But you can still make a memory. Maybe you can borrow a tent from a friend and make your own adventure. Crafts don’t cost lots of money and in my experience, most kids love ‘em! In fact, as we have finished our first year of Messy Church, we have had the joy of seeing parents & children enjoy being crafty together. Go for some walks. Don’t wish away the time, counting the days till the new term. Have a laugh and make a memory. As always if you would like to pop in for a cuppa and chat, the doors are always open.

Rossington Parish Council - AUGUST 2013 The flower beds have been planted and look wonderful. With the help of DMBC and some money I found we have 23 new planters, 8 three tier and 15 tubs that are scattered about the village. We did have some vandalism in the market place, but these tubs were taken away and refilled, they were then put elsewhere in the village. So, it truly is ‘Rossington in Bloom’ this year, and the Parish Council will continue to try to improve on what we now have. The Medieval Festival will probably be over when Rossington Today reaches your door, but we still have the Rossington Music Festival to look forward to. I can now announce that John Parr of ‘St Elmo’s Fire’ fame will be making an appearance with his new band on Sunday the 18th August with a 1 hour slot just before Wishbone Ash. There are nine bands each day with three headline acts to finish each night off. So remember 17th and 18th August is the Rossington Music festival, the biggest and best music festival in Doncaster and probably South Yorkshire. The Festival is not just the weekend, it’s all week long, Monday the 12th August at the Poacher is Black Sky Paradise (from the village) and Classical Music at Holmescarr; Tuesday is Yorkshire Stompers Jazz band at the Ex-Servicemen’s Club and Medieval music at the Memorial Hall; Wednesday Black Sky Paradise at the Styrrup and Country Western at the Labour Club; Thursday it is Ska/Reggae at the Styrrup and ‘the Outsiders’ an Folk (Rock) band at the Welfare; and on Friday the 16th August we have ‘View From S62’ at the Poacher and, hopefully, The Brass Players at Holmescarr playing the music from ‘Brassed Off’. All free of charge provided for by the 10 10

Parish Council, so what a week! In September we have the Brodsworth Way Fun Day, for all the village fun and games for all, well the kids really, we have Doncaster Rovers coaches giving coaching lessons, running football matches for all the children in Rossington (any from elsewhere can be fitted in too), Donny Dog will be at Huddersfield, so Eric the Viking will be there and the League One trophy will be on display. There will be bouncy castles and fairground rides, but this year there will be an assault course a climbing wall, face-painting and children’s make-up and the usual BBQ and much more. Everyone is invited free of charge. Keep an eye out for the posters and leaflets. There were a few meeting in the past month, the Triple ‘A’ met and decided that we will claim the Government grant of £7000 to get someone to do the actual writing and we went through the Housing Policy and the draft already written as acceptable and expressed our own and your ideas, taken from the consultations, of what we want for the future. We had a Projects Committee meeting at which my wife, Janet, was elected chair. We made a profit (!) of about £1,000 and it was decided that we would give £1,000 to Ben Parkinson’s selected charity. Christmas Lights were discussed and it was agreed to move these forward. The Medieval event was discussed and jobs given out. Barry Johnson is to do the Risk assessment. The Public Liability Insurance was discussed and this was to be pursued. There was a proposal to extend the

Bonfire and Fireworks show to make it more enjoyable, this was deferred. At the July Parish Council two grant applications took place Qigon and ‘The Ladies Who Love to Sing’ were granted £360 to cover hardship issues regarding the equalisation of charges at the Memorial Hall. Jim Beaumont resigned as Parish Clerk after 5 months. I am sorry to see him go. Adrian Pickersgill was co-opted on to the Parish Council and will be a major asset. We voted to buy a steel container to store everything; it’s amazing how things build up especially inheriting the carnival Association things as well. Mr M Jackson complained to the Parish Council about the mess next to the crossing. I told Mr Jackson that I had already taken action as Ward Councillor and had asked DMBC’s Environmental enforcement team to place a section 215 order on Network Rail to clean this up, I wait in anticipation!

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Rossington Councillor’s update - AUGUST 2013 Yet another quiet Month with only a few things to report; the saga of the FARRRS goes on and on and is now a year late, I am assured that progress is being made and I can only say that we in Rossington must have the patience of Job! At Holmescarr things are moving with the interior demolition of the old kitchen area and a new roof being fitted to the corridor. The Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee met to sort out our work plan and some of the financial side of things associated with the council and the extremely large cuts that the Government are imposing upon us of £105 million on top of the £100 million already cut, much larger than was initially announced, this will cause us some difficulties, in all departments.

use the commissioners’ proposals as the basis of their thoughts on where the boundaries should be and how many Councillors there should be. This is a submission that was put in even before the Mayor and elected Members were told that they were coming. I did a count of the time spent as a Councillor and the first working day was 10 hours 40 mins and that was not including bits and bobs for the parish council and eating and drinking. Anyway that’s enough of a sob story. I’m sure they will completely ignore my submission.

went to the annual meeting of the Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation at which I am the Voting Member. One interesting item did pop up, I went to the Rovers’ Partners Lunch and they described a way to reduce Anti Social Behaviour and this had worked, so we may have this in Rossington soon. T

I now Chair the South Yorkshire Archaeology Committee and the South Yorkshire Archives Committee and that is interesting, although it does sound a bit boring, I must be a geek! I also

Garden View

Designer Gardens It is estimated that just 3% of the UK population employ a professional garden designer, with most people opting to design their own outdoor space, or adapt one they may have inherited. The first decision to make when starting a plan is whether to make it look ‘designed’ or not. By this I mean do you like a structured garden with big sweeping curves and strong lines, formality and symmetry, or do you prefer a more informal space that looks like it ‘just happened’, almost by mistake, (these are much harder to achieve as you are often trying to recreate something nature does best). There was an industry debate recently which explored the idea of modern gardens being ‘over designed’. Just like in clothing fashion, there’s a revival of a certain era every so often, and it’s the same with design outdoors. Once up on a time, formal terraces were all the rage with pretty-coloured bedding schemes and clipped hedging. Then, decades later, these were dug up and replaced

with sweeping natural ‘landscapes’ , where trees and lakes were carefully located to make them appear as though they had always been there. Which is right? Well, neither, it’s personal taste and as long as it fits with the house style and surrounding landscape, I think you should do what makes you happy. After all, that’s what gardens are for, to be enjoyed. Once you’ve decided on a style, take some measurements of the boundaries, starting with the house. Use circles, curves, squares and rectangles to make some nice shapes on the plan, then choose a material to fill them in with. Usually the largest space will be the lawn, then patio or deck, and pathways, then fill the gaps with plants. Next month is the perfect time to plant, so we’ll be looking at planting plans in detail then. In 2008/2009, laws were introduced

TOP TIPS

Jobs to do this month include:   

20 20

Keep things simple. Don’t over complicate the basic design layout Use pergolas to add height and shade Consider hedges instead of fencing to add structure ROSSINGTON TODAY

 

Make space for at least one small tree Consider the maintenance of the new garden - decking and gravel are cheap, but require more maintenance in the long term

regarding things like changing levels in your garden, such as only being allowed to raise decking by 30cm above ground level, any higher would require a protective rail or balustrade; and also the consideration of sustainable ways to manage water, and where possible retaining it within the garden. So, before planning any major works to your garden, check with your local planning department that you don’t need permission

Until next time, happy gardening,

Rossington Main

The pre-season game versus Doncaster Rovers proved to be a huge success for the Club and just reward to the Committee and volunteers who had spent most of their free time in the 3 weeks preceding the game down at the ground improving facilities in preparation for a healthy attendance. A combination of excellent weather, a push by local businesses and committee to sell match tickets and the facility to actually “pay at the gate” resulted in a record attendance of 1245 who enjoyed a rather one-sided game, but one in which our players emerged with much credit as they restricted their professional opponents to a 3-0 win. Rossington Main F.C. would like to thank the Rovers staff for production of the match tickets, assisting with ticket sales at the Keepmoat, and for sending their 1st team management and players - all of whom conducted themselves in a professional manner and were so approachable by signing autographs and speaking to everyone throughout the evening. It would be impossible to list everyone who helped make this occasion so memorable but suffice to say that the Rossington public pulled together to make the evening an excellent “community” event, and special thanks to those volunteers behind the scenes (who possibly worked just as hard as the players) in ensuring everything ran smoothly. I feel certain that the local youngsters who acted as mascots will certainly remember the occasion, but also sincere thanks to everyone who attended. We hope you enjoyed your visit and you may consider 24 24

watching more matches down at Oxford Street in the season ahead. We are still aiming to improve facilities at the ground and work will continue in the 3 weeks remaining prior to the season kick-off in extending the bar area, and making the 2nd portacabin housing the Secretary’s office, press and media office and first aid post more presentable, before attempting to convert our storage room into an indoor gym area.

Pre-season training has averaged around 25-30 players and it is pleasing to see so many local youngsters attending. Anyone who feels they would like to improve the standard of their football can attend as the managers prepare to form the squad of players for the new season, which incidentally kicks off on August 10th. The NCEL fixture list is due out shortly but we do have a few other

ROSSINGTON MWBC Apologies to our bowling fraternity for sacrificing space in the July issue in order to give extra publicity to the above Rovers game but normal service is resumed this month. We have just passed the mid-point of the competitive bowling season. As I write we are enjoying the weather all bowlers long for with the sun on our backs and the greens getting quicker as a hot spell continues, and the teams are holding their own in their respective divisions. Special mention must go to our Saturday League B team who are currently unbeaten after 5 games, an impressive record with resounding wins at home and away. We are managing to turn out 2 teams on a regular basis and we have a few new social bowlers who enjoy their regular Thursday morning sessions. We often see inquisitive youngsters watching from the road-side but seldom do they take up our invitation

to come and have a go. Our internal Club handicap competitions, having been resurrected this year, are reaching the final stages and congratulations to member Richard Brooke who will be competing in the Singles final. His opponent is not yet known as the other half of the draw is at the semi-final stage. The Doubles Handicap competition is currently at the quarter-final point but already there have been many close matches in both competitions, possibly indicating that the handicapping is relatively accurate. The club’s A team narrowly missed out on reaching the semi-final stage of a League Handicap competition when losing by just 8 points (159167) against premier division opponents Woodlands Park. The gardens around the greens continue to draw praise and admiration from visitors - testament to the many hours put in by a certain volunteer and his assistants - and the club is extremely likely to host a Doncaster League Final in August on the strength of its facilities and the state of the greens. Wheelers

Club membership numbers are continuing to swell through the early part of summer with various different group rides going out from the club rendezvous point (St Michaels lay-by) on Saturday and Sunday mornings and also Tuesday evenings, these groups usually cater for ride time available, pace required and the riding ambition of riders on the day.

The traffic lights on the A614 meanwhile continue to wreak havoc with the local TT scene but swift action by the club has seen a course switch for the AAD Gas Handicap TT League to a 10 mile loop course starting and finishing around about The Green Tree. As the summer temperature hots up so does the competition in the AAD League with a new leader now in situ at the top of the leaderboard as long time frontrunner Rob Shepherd finds himself in the grasp of the handicapper – six rounds are left now and everything is still to ride for in most categories: 1. Mark Billingham 67 points 2. Rob Shepherd 65 Leading Veteran 3. Alex Irvine (14) 49 Leading Junior 6. Cheryl Craven 33 Leading Lady The club has postponed its Open 25 mile TT event until Sat 24/08/13 due to uncertainty surrounding road closures. In the J E James League for North Midlands Area Clubs Rossington Wheelers sit third (of 14) in the team competition on 1402 points, Kiveton Park are the meat in the Rossington sandwich as still sitting pretty at the top of the league are Sugarcane Velo Club on 1582. In the individual competition Rossington Wheelers have 7 riders in the top 40, Shaun Randall cracking the top 10 in 9th,

Sugarcane Velo have riders 1st, 7th and 8th – Michael Brammall being the current occupant of the top spot. Lots of members have been taking on their own personal challenges and individual events and plenty more are doing so in the coming month, including at least half a dozen members who gained balloted entry into the RideLondon Classic which will be big in the media in early August. All club rides, events and other activities and a variety of cycling links and further information are available via our website: www. rossingtonwheelers.co.uk or

via our social outlets twitter: @ RossoWheelers and Facebook: Rossington Wheelers Cycling Club or of course via Chairman and sponsor Les at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue. T

How’s that? Rossington 1st XI have had another a stellar month as their imperious start to life in the Pontefract league continues. An unbeaten month means a twelve point lead at the top has been established. In the cup a semi-final against Glasshoughton awaits, a possible final date on the 28th July providing a huge incentive. Rossington Second XI are ploughing through what has been somewhat of a challenging season. Several youngsters have flourished in their first experiences of senior cricket as they readily grasp opportunities afforded to them. A real fighting spirit has emerged too. This was particularly evident against Eggborough, as the 2nd XI dug deep to become the first team to take points off the runaway league leaders. The Sunday XI are continuing to struggle this season in a really competitive league. They have squandered several winning positions and need to learn to become more ruthless if they

are to avoid relegation. Rossington Under 13’s have had a month of wins and disappointments, after a positive start against Bentley, rain stopped play and the match had to be replayed, the second game did not work out as expected we lost but produced a close game. The next game they returned to winning ways beating Barnby Dun at home. As a club we work in Partnership with local schools, to develop the game in the local community. We are proud of this partnership and would like to congratulate Rossington All Saints for getting to the schools South Yorkshire cup final, a disappointment to not win but they played well at home in the final. Forthcoming home fixtures 3rd Aug 2nd XI v Peglers, 10th Aug 1st XI v Monk Bretton, 17th Aug 2nd XI v Garforth, 24th Aug 1st XI v Sykehouse, 31st Aug 2nd XI v Yorkshire Main. Future events Sunday 25th Aug we are having a RACE NIGHT, 7.30pm start at Rossington Welfare. Adults £5 to include £1 free bet and Kids go free. For more information contact Michael on 07960 549708. 3 Peaks Success

Rossington resident Jeanette Quinn, her daughter Danielle and their friend Kim completed the Yorkshire 3 peaks to raise money for Eve Merton Dreams Trust which is a Doncaster charity who help cancer patients in all of the Doncaster area. They help make the lives of cancer patients more enjoyable by helping to create some of their dreams come true whether it be a

day out somewhere special, or helping with things they’d like in the garden or home.

They did the walk on 22nd June and weren’t blessed with good weather, in fact it rained all day for 11 hours give or take a few minutes. The walk covers 3 mountains over 26miles and it’s not for the faint hearted but they did it.... and raised £300 for the charity. T

Friends of Brodsworth Way Residents Group Despite the gorgeous weather, we had just nine attend our coffee morning in July. We do hope that our coffee mornings will continue at least until the year end, when we may need some additional help to run them. 1st August is the date for our next coffee morning, from about 9 am to 11.15 am in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion. Everyone is welcome.

multi-use games area (MUGA) near to the Pavilion have been throwing their cans and bottles, etc. just about everywhere in that area and I’m sure that many of the dog walkers, including myself, are fed up of picking this rubbish up every day and putting it in the bins provided. This really is a poor state of affairs. Also, with the mention of dog walkers, there are still loads of people not picking up their dog’s mess and a thought really should be spared for the other frequent A lot of the children using the users of the field and play areas. I have written to the Council to see if they can carry out an exercise which may result in some further fixed penalty notices or prosecutions which would then serve as a reminder that we MUST pick the poo up and put it in the bins. If we have a dog then COUNTRY NIGHT EVERY WEDNESDAY we do have an obligation here. A little consideration goes a long way! 7th Dee D James - Brill act be early!! Calling Doncaster Musical Youth Artist Janet Wood is on a mission to bring together Doncaster’s musical youth in a brand new choir which will perform alongside other youth choirs in Sheffield and Barnsley in a regional celebration of young voices. It will be a choir with a difference. We want young people aged 1119 to spend time in the gallery at The Point and use the visual art on display as inspiration for writing new songs and lyrics. Janet explains more: “This is a musical adventure driven by the young people themselves. The benefits of singing have been well documented. It’s a great way to express creativity and meet new friends. It’s also loads of fun and just makes you feel good!” Using visual arts to inspire choirs is all the rage this summer. The National Portrait Gallery has just announced its new choir, and we hope that by 2014 the Yorkshire version will see 90 young people sharing their own words and music at a high profile regional arts venue. We’re running free taster sessions in the summer holidays for anyone aged 11-19 who wants to come along and give singing and songwriting a try. You never know we might find the next Louis Tomlinson,

Lesley Garrett or Tony Christie! Singing in the Gallery Free Taster Session info: Wednesday 31st July 2-3pm Wednesday 14th August 2.-3pm To book your place please call 01302 341662, email darts@thepoint. org.uk check our website www. thepoint.org.uk/get-involved or pop into The Point for a chat. From September, the choir will meet at The Point early on Wednesday evenings during term time. These sessions will also be free. This project is part of a South Yorkshire partnership between Barnsley, Doncaster and Sheffield funded by Youth Music’s ‘Excellence Through Group Singing’ programme. Barnsleys’s choir will be inspired by work at Barnsley Civic and the Sheffield choir by art on display at Site Gallery. T
