@tickhillorg
Welcome
to the SEPTEMBER 2013
edition of Rossington Today.
September has come around already! Actually at the time of writing we are barely into August, however, in line with my declaration that I would be taking some time off this summer to spend with my family while they still have long summer holidays, the September magazines were packed off to the printers early August and our suitcases were packed for our holiday in Spain!
Cherishing special times is a bit of an art though. It’s so easy to get embroiled with practical life stuff that the fun things can get overlooked and before you know it you’ve blinked and they’re back at school in shiny new shoes and cardies that are too big. So as the nights start to close in why not resolve to have some family time – whether you still feel frazzled from the school holidays or whether you are child-free, have a think about those close to you and book in some time to just ‘be’. And whilst you’re at it, check out all of our wonderful advertisers. A bit like a new school uniform that takes time to grow into, our magazine is always evolving but also has much that is familiar too! The October magazines will be delivered from 27th September and anything you would like including, should be with me by Friday 13th September.
Best wishes, Paula x

Join the fun at Messy Church Summer is over. I hope it was a great one for you! Due to Paula’s timing (so she can have a needed holiday), all the bits for the September Rossington Today had to be in early. Last month we challenged each other to make a memory this summer. I wanted to take Chase on our first ever camp out (away from the back garden anyway). It hasn’t happened yet as of this writing so I will tell you about it next month.
Doing things together doesn’t have to finish with our summer challenge. I know the Wii, Xbox360, iPhones, ipads are a reality (and I do like them myself!). I find that doing things together with your children/grandchildren often doesn’t just “happen” … it has to happen on purpose. I want to tell you about something that can help you and your family do something together … on purpose.

Messy Church (MC) started for us 2 years ago as an experimental lunch time club at Pheasant Bank. What we weren’t ready for was the level of excitement from the children! As the term moved on, we ended up having to limit the numbers that could come along. It was a good thing. Last year, September Messy Church we bumped 9 Sept (Monday) things up a AND notch to shift 12 Sept (Thursday) operation to 3.30-5.30 pm after school that Holmescarr Community Centre would include (Grange Lane nr. ASDA) Dads, Mums, Grandparents, Cousins, Carers, etc. We ended the year with All Welcome a balloon Eric Simpson ... 07828141472 Sunday ...10.30am eric@communitybapitst.co.uk powered ROSSINGTON TODAY
rocket competition, pizza and water bomb fight to finish. Thanks to all the helpers and families who came along to make it such a success. People ask … “What is Messy Church”? Good question. It is an opportunity, once a month to come along and … have a fun craft session … learn a bit about God, family, life in a fun, entertaining, interactive way … and share a meal together. We have such “boring” things such as magic, balloons, puzzles, etc. during our “God bit”. It is lowkey, low-stress and just plain fun. As it is not a “children’s club”, the only thing we ask is that an adult (16+) accompanies a child(ren). You may bring your child’s mate but you would need to be responsible for them. We do not charge people to come. It is held at the Holmescarr Community Centre, near ASDA. Just come in and follow the sign posts. Due to last year’s success, we are expanding to two sessions per month for this year! That means MC will happen on the 2nd Monday and Thursday of a month (except April due to Easter). I will include the dates as a reminder in Rossington Today (thanks Paula!). Feel free to contact me with any questions. And, as always if you would like to pop in for a cuppa and chat, the doors are always open.

New Dance Studio
Reach for the Stars School of Dance has been part of the Rossington community for over 7 years. On the 1st September 2013 the dance school, which previously operated from within Pheasant Bank School, will open the doors to its state of the art Dance Studios.
Situated within Unit 1C of the Oakleaf Industrial Estate, Rossington the Studio will boast two Dance Studios, changing rooms, reception and kitchen area, toilet facilities and car parking. Having better facilities means the school can expand further and provide more to the local community. As the school has grown over the years the need for better facilities has always been at the forefront,
this new move will ensure that the school is here for many more years to come and can continue to provide enjoyable and professional dance classes to the community of Rossington and surrounding areas. Reach for the stars school of dance has been running in Rossington since 2006. The school delivers dance classes in Ballet, Tap, Modern Jazz, Theatre Craft, Freestyle, Street dance, Cheerleading and Gymnastic dance. Reach for the Stars School of Dance regularly compete in ADFP competitions and has a successful competition team. Classes are available for all ages starting from the age of 2 up to adult. Regular examinations are undertaken through the IDTA and the school has 100% pass
rate in all examinations. The school also offers classes for professional development either into a dance-teaching career or towards a professional dance career and dance college. T

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar?
“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home.
“We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”
APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.
ROSSINGTON TODAY
Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.
Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Garden View
Planning to Plant Last month I wrote about garden design, and how to decide on which style you would like to choose for your own garden, and more importantly whether to make it look ‘designed’ or not. As promised, in this month’s article we’re focusing on softening the design with planting. Well-designed gardens are a successful blend of hard and soft landscaping (e.g. paving and plants), but not until recently did it occur to me how you can achieve a great effect with very little in terms of hard landscaping. Whether you are thinking about a new garden, total re-design, or just want to refresh a single border, it is important to draw yourself a planting plan. It’s not as scary as it sounds, and is really just like a large ‘paint by numbers’. A plan will avoid expensive mistakes made by impulse purchases, and will reduce maintenance in the long term. The resulting garden will also look so
much fuller, the plants much happier and healthier, and you will feel proud of your creation instead of frustrated with your lack of ability. First of all, begin by enlisting the help of a gardening friend (or passerby) with a tape measure, and get a blueprint of what is there now. Measure the boundaries of the borders - note any trees and hedges, fences and walls, shady spots, and those in full sun too. If you know which way the sun moves around the garden you will have much more success in choosing the right plants. Draw the plan on paper, ideally to scale. 1:50 is a good size for the average garden (where 50cm in reality is 1cm on paper). Then, using a selection of larger and smaller coins to draw around, fill the border with circles, starting at the rear of the border with the large shrubs, and work

Rossington Main By the time you are reading this issue the 1st team will probably be 5 games into the 2013-14 season which started on Saturday August 10th. The delayed production of this season’s fixture list meant that I was unable to publicise our opening games in the August magazine. The League has new sponsorship this year with Toolstation replacing former sponsors Baris with a lucrative 3 year deal.
Much has happened since our prestigious pre-season friendly with Doncaster Rovers way back in early July, none more so than the departure of four of our more senior players to play at a higher level. Whilst we have always supported our players and not stood in the way of their progress, the timing of these moves obviously placed enormous pressure on the management team as all four players would have probably featured in the 1st team line-up. However it also gave opportunity for some local youngsters to step up and prove themselves capable of playing at a higher level within our 2 senior sides. I can recommend a visit to our Oxford Street ground on match days if only to view and sample the facilities on offer. The improvements made during the summer months must have placed our ground amongst the best in non-League football at our level. We have undercover seated accommodation on both sides of the ground, you can even watch the game from the warmth of the Main Bar enjoying a hot snack and a beer, or you can stand on the terraced areas enjoying the banter of the assembled crowd. These fixtures early season are subject to change because of F.A. Cup and Vase matches involving Clubs at our level at the early stages 28 28

ROSSINGTON MWBC Very little to report on the crown green bowling front as we enter the final month of the outdoor competitive season. September has often proved to be very conducive to bowling as we can usually enjoy a late burst of fine weather, sadly when most of our League matches have been played. Monday and Wednesday afternoon matches however continue this month as our Over 60s leagues comprise 12 clubs, but our evening midweek and Saturday league games have virtually ended. We are possibly poised to challenge for promotion with both Saturday sides, but lie comfortably in mid-table in most other divisions. We hope to stage the finals of our internal Club
handicaps early in September and are likely to hold some other impromptu competitions amongst members as vacant dates become more regular. We have had a few new social bowlers register with us part way through the bowling season, which may increase our membership numbers next year, and County bowler Adam Morgan has recently registered to play with our Doubles Team. Adam is a talented and experienced bowler and his presence in our team can only benefit the current members, furthermore he is encouraging his young son Jacob to take up the game, and with luck we may have a new JUNIOR member on our books in the not too distant future! Only a short month of action this month and also one week has been washed out and so its pretty much as you were points and position-wise in the AAD Gas Handicap TT League with three rounds remaining in August. The competition will have reached its climax by the time you read this and the format of the competition has proved very successful and very fair, if we can get a traffic light free course next year the competition will continue to thrive.
On the national professional scene Rossington’s Team Raleigh rider Graham Briggs has benefitted from a welcome return to form of late with a string of consistent performances in the British Cycling Elite Series (televised on Eurosport). A 2nd placed finish in the local Sheffield Grand Prix separating local friends and rivals the Downing Bros secured Graham 2nd place overall in the series that he won in 2012. Graham was also 2nd in the National Circuit Championships and sits now 9th in the National Road Rankings and will be looking to secure a place in Raleigh’s Tour of Britain team for this event in September. August saw the first of hopefully many more new international standard events to be held in the UK with the ‘RideLondon Surrey Classic’. This comprises a mass participation event, including at least five Wheelers members who completde a cycling equivalent of the London Marathon and are then followed through on the same course by the elite level professionals in the event created as a legacy from the Olympic Games. As our part in this development the summer of 2013 has seen the first ‘Go-Ride’ coaching sessions delivered to youngsters in Rossington
and the club is actively developing the necessary infrastructure and partnerships to roll these out on larger scale in order to encourage the local junior interest in cycling. Also for 2014 the club has ambitious plans to develop its range of published material and literature and will be looking for any interested sponsorship partners to support us in a mutually beneficial manner. If anyone is interested in discussing available commercial options or any other aspect of the clubs activities please e-mail rossingtonwheelers@
aol.com or make contact with us through our other social forums which can all be found via www. rossingtonwheelers.co.uk or drop in to see club chairman Les at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue. T
How’s that? Rossington Main CC has endured a somewhat difficult month as the season heads towards the business end. The 1st XI in particular have suffered from a slump, a series of defeats has seen them surrender their hold of the top spot. However because of their excellent start, they remain in an excellent position to secure promotion to the Pontefract Division 3. There was more disappointment in the cup, Rossington were defeated by Glasshoughton in a low-scoring scrap. The 1st XI will be looking to kick-start their season in the next few weeks to ensure that their earlier good work doesn’t go to waste. A youthful 2nd XI has been buoyed by back-to-back wins to keep them firmly in mid-table. The 2nds enjoyed a quite remarkable one wicket win over Ryhill where two juniors, Cameron Price and Haydn Briggs saw them over the line with a brilliant tenth wicket partnership that saw

victory secured with the penultimate ball of the game. The win was mainly set up by a devastating knock from Scott Johnson which included three consecutive straight sixes. The fighting spirit was on display again against Askern. Rossington recovered from the disastrous position of 4-4 to post a respectable total before dismissing their opponents for a comfortable win. Jamie Kelly and Liam Flynn starred with both bat and ball as Rossington completed a Lazarus style comeback. The two results showed good progress for a side that has predominantly focused on developing youngsters all season. Meanwhile the Sunday XI has continued to toil in what is a strong Barnsley League. Despite the best efforts of Captain Andrew Gardiner, Rossington seem set for relegation, although it’s a guarantee that the team will continue to keep fighting until the bitter end. The water level in the pond is getting low again and we can only hope this doesn’t affect our wildlife living on there. There have been quite a few babies, i.e. coots, ducklings and just one cygnet this year. They are always such a pleasure to see. The Council put three planters outside the Pavilion, which have been lovely, although someone chose to push one over in late July. Fortunately one of the local residents reinstated and replanted it, and has kept them watered during the heat wave. South Yorkshire Police Special Constable Recruitment opportunities
Tickhill & District Lions Club
South Yorkshire Police are seeking dynamic, committed, passionate individuals for the role of Special Constable.
Ten Lions attended the funeral of former Lion Ted Elliott, providing a guard of honour at St Mary’s Church as his coffin was taken in and out of church. The church was full of friends wishing to celebrate the life of a wellrespected supporter of ‘Tickhill Life’ and our Lions Club was honoured to have been chosen by Ted’s family to receive donations. Thank you Ann. After thirty years of assembling wooden panels, decorated by the late Henry Bletcher, on to a farm trailer loaned to us by the Foers family to create our Christmas float, we have for some weeks been building a new float based on a caravan chassis. Work is progressing well and the new float will benefit from the latest available LED lights and electrics. We are indebted to Lions Ken Garner and Ken Green for their efforts.

DONCASTER TRIMMERS BENEFITS OF TINTING
• Reduced glare: Tinting your vehicle can drastically reduce glare from the sun, making driving on bright days much safer • Reduced UV: Tinting dramatically reduces UV rays, which are damaging to both you and your car’s interior • Cooling: Tinting can have a cooling effect on your vehicle, allowing a more pleasant drive, and reduce costs associated with running air conditioning • Security: Not only may tinting act as a deterrent, but the tinting film will also hold shattered glass in place, making it difficult for your potential thief to access your valuables • Looks great: Window tinting also looks fantastic, and greatly enhances the appeal of your vehicle
