the JANUARY 2014 edition

And so we welcome another year… 2014. I do hope that all readers have had an enjoyable Christmas, and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. As I write this, there are still 2 weeks before the big day but I know that this time will fly past and I am determined to make time to enjoy all the things that make this time of year special. For me many of the school related activities will be the last ones, as my youngest will join her brother and sister at secondary school next September, so no more Christmas Fairs, nativity plays and school Christingle services that are part and parcel of the run up to Christmas at primary school. Maybe after 11 years of manning a tombola at a PTA Christmas Fair, I will get a year off next year! 2014 may be upon us by the time you read this, if not it won’t be far away, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers and their families a very happy New Year, I hope the year ahead will be not only happy but a memorable one for you.

Time to Banish the Post

Christmas Blues!

It is Eric, back from my wanderings about in the States for nearly 3 months. I was there trying to raise some funds for Messy Church. It is great to be back and visit with you again for our monthly cuppa. I hope you had a fantastic Christmas.

Celebrations are funny sorts of things. We spend so much time and energy in the preparations and plans. When the time actually comes ... bang! It seems to be over in the blink of an eye. The presents are unwrapped in 7 minutes. Toys are played with for 4 minutes before they are thrown to the side for the real fun ... the box. The Christmas dinner that took so long to prepare is over in 45 minutes (or less). I hope there was fun and connection with your family in all the pre-Christmas activity. Now we come to a bit of a dilemma. Elvis sang about having a “blue .. blue .. blu .. blu .. blue Christmas ... without you.” I am sure some of us will experience that. I am now into my 3rd Christmas without mum. That does make me a bit blue. That is expected. But the blind side punch is what often happens AFTER Christmas. We come down off our

6 6

adrenaline high and crash. Getting back into the swing of life is just tough. Elijah in the Bible experienced that kind of emotional crash and

an extreme emotional high. The busy-ness is gone. The credit card statement comes through. The days are cold and dark. That is enough to drive anyone to the brink. We always have choices. I am a big choice “nut”. I have a certain amount of control over what my children do (umm, well, my 10 year old anyway). But it’s like the lad who was told to stand up by his teacher. He January Messy Church reluctantly stood up, crossed his arms with this thought running through his mind ... “I may be standing up on the outside but I’m sittin’ down on the inside”. Why not choose to

ROSSINGTON TODAY

work though the post-Christmas blues. I want to mention on way. I have found writing to be really helpful. If your Christmas had some great highlights, why not write a letter to a relative you didn’t get to see. How about a journal? A song? A poem? It doesn’t have to be long, fancy or rhyme (if you are writing a poem) but allow it to come from the heart. Maybe your Christmas was rubbish for whatever reason. You can do the same thing. It can be a form of grieving. Maybe your Christmas was stolen by a cruel remark, fight with someone or just the depressing thought about a family member. Write it down. You would be surprised how much of the load it removes. Remember that God loves you. You are special and Jesus would have lived and died had you been the only person alive. As always if you would like to come and have a cuppa & chat, the door is always open.

Rossington Parish Council - JANUARY 2014 We have two new Parish Councillors, Cllr. Andy Tissington and Cllr. Scott Walkinshaw, both young and eager. This will reduce the average age of the Parish Council considerably. We hope to encourage younger people to be involved with the village and show that politics is not ‘boring’. We have always got to get a good age range and a good gender balance and it is difficult, at times, to get volunteers to serve. Also and very important, we want people who will get involved and help out at our events and in the planning. Well, the Christmas lights looked spectacular when they were first put up, bright and pretty, but the high winds caused a few problems. The problems were mostly the decorations twisting on the lamp posts and were easily corrected. The Parish Council did wonders finding this supplier; they have a range of lights that are unsurpassed at a very reasonable price. Hopefully we will put more lights around the village. More lights on the trees near St Michael’s and on Stripe Road and perhaps some traditional lights near the other shopping areas in the village. We are hoping that the South Yorkshire Credit Union (SYCU) will be working from the Holmescarr Centre early next year with full support from the Parish Council. Credit Unions are a non-profit making charitable bank that lend small amounts of money to its’ members and savers at low rates. These low rates are to stop loan sharks and ‘Pay Day’ lenders who charge excessive interest rate sometimes as high as 2500% taking advantage of people. The SYCU offers a wide range of services that will help the low paid and those on ever shrinking benefits keep their head about water and out of the hands of the bailiffs. 10 10

ROSSINGTON TODAY

There is no Parish Council meeting to report on as Christmas has pulled everything forward a week, sorry. But we did have some committee meetings to report on; one Projects, one Planning and two Strategy! The Planning Committee had five items in front of them, and there were ‘No Observations’ on all of them. One item of note was the planning application to change agricultural land to an allotment by RecyCoal. This is the extra allotments being given to the Parish Council as part of their Section 106 agreement with DMBC. It was noted that after a joint site visit by DMBC planning officers and the Parish Council Planning Committee it was agreed that two youngish, c. 20 or so years old, Ash trees could be removed to allow more daylight into a garden they were abutting. The Projects Committee opened with a member of the public having their say, asking about future plans for Holmescarr Great Wood, the answer after considerable discussion was a simple no, and that there was no point until RecyCoal had almost finished. Technically this was not the correct procedure as questions should not be asked during the public forum. The ‘Public Forum’ was allowed as a privilege to the public to make statements, not ask questions, which are specifically not allowed, and an interrogation of the Parish Councillors was definitely not allowed. Anyway the meeting finally got going and discussions took place regarding the Christmas Fayre, Pantomime and the Christmas Lights. All of which was well in hand. The events budget was then discussed and agreed. The first Strategy Committee meeting was to discuss rescuing the second half of the Miner’s wheel and John Gibson was to liaise with RecyCoal to get it moved and stored. Also the Rossington

Environment Association ‘s grant for their insurance and membership fees was approved. Our Parish Clerk was to find out the future plans and projects of the Association. The Second meeting was to pass the Budget. This was done in two parts of if capped to 2% and the other uncapped. The Swimming Pool and the Youth Club may very well be closed and the Parish Council have plans to save them, this will cost a lot. So the Parish precept may go up about 20p per week to save these two assets for public use. We hope we have your support in saving our treasures. T

Garden View

A Shady Space

Light levels during January are low and the days are short, but now the winter solstice has passed, days are slowly lengthening. There are however, areas of the garden which never receive much sunlight, and these shady spaces are often the conversation starter when I speak to gardeners. A south facing garden is on the priority list of most house hunters, but in reality there must be around the same number of houses built on the dark side of the road! If you’re lucky enough to have a front and back garden, then you should have somewhere to grow the sun lovers, but it’s often a rear shady garden which causes most frustration. So what’s my answer? Embrace the shade! Shady spaces can be much more atmospheric than those open to full sun, they have a great earthy smell and can support a diverse range of plants and mosses. My suggestion is to layer the planting, so that it looks like the creation of shade is intentional. I would probably go as far as to erect a structure, such as a pergola or shade sail over the top, creating a cosy outdoor room, and use lighting to visually warm the space at night. 18 18

ROSSINGTON TODAY

Your layering process begins with the boundaries. The first stage is to paint them black, and before you scream ‘BLACK?!’ out loud, hear me out. Painting the boundaries black will help them to fade into the background once plants mature. The second stage is to clothe the fences and walls with climbers. Although hated by some, Ivy is perfect for this, but other things to try are shade-tolerant Honeysuckles or wall shrubs such as Hydrangea petiolaris and Garrya elliptica. For additional flower colour, why not cram in a couple of Clematis? Introduce height with a small tree such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ or the evergreen Trachycarpus fortunei. Clump forming bamboo makes a great vertical accent, as does the banana Musa basjoo. Next in our ‘shade lasagne’ are the shrubs such as the purple leaved Acers, Viburnum tinus, Box (which can be clipped into shapes to add formality) and Sarcococca. Smaller perennials such as Astilbe, Aconitum and Hellebores provide colour and finally ferns such as the evergreen Asplenium scholopendrium supply wonderful glossy ground cover. So there you have it, a shady oasis, and as with most things in life, if

you fully embrace it, a north facing shady garden can be magical. T

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee. .

I am still off ill, but the Parish Council is keeping me on my toes! I hope to get ‘fixed’ just before Christmas with a treatment of cardioversion, electric Rossington Councillor’s update - January 2014 shock treatment to you and me; and get back to all my duties as Councillor. it was a great success, of course my wife about workers coming and going, so, to Finding the necessary savings to meet the Government’s cuts is proving difficult. Because Ros Jones wants to put forward a three year plan, there is no hiding place for Councillors and senior officers. The earlier that these cuts take place the less we have to cut in the long run, so a lot of burning the midnight oil is going on. We will be searching for savings (that sounds better than cuts) right up until the last minute and I hope that we will still have some form of Council left working for the people of Rossington and Doncaster by the time we are finished. The Parish Council is hoping to take up some of the slack and duties of DMBC and I can only thank them. It is ironic that Parish Councils in the 21st century are reverting back to the Parish Councils of the 19th century in looking after the poor and the services that we need now. It’s a good job that we have enough capital money, section 106 money and grants to start the link road. I’m sure that most people will by now have seen the start they are making – 22 months and counting. The jobs that it will bring to Rossington and Doncaster can only be welcomed. This will also mean that we will be able to get out of the village quicker, especially those that have to wait for the crossing.

and I went just to ‘check-up’ on things, no enjoyment what-so-ever and I even paid the bus fare! The two TARAs in Rossington have an open invite to all residents and, in my opinion, deserve to be well supported. The Central TARA, meetings are held at Skipwith Gardens Community Centre, have their meeting on the last Tuesday of the month at 2.00pm and the Radburn Road TARA have their meetings at the Ragusa Community Centre on the second Wednesday of the Month at 3.00pm. The Holmescarr Centre is expanding with newly reconditioned rooms coming onto stream. One has been completely rebuilt as an extension to the Nursery currently at Torndale and should be occupied as the new term starts in January, a little late, but better to be done correctly than having a rushed bodge job! We have another group interested in the old Headmaster and secretary offices that have been refurbished and the South Yorkshire Credit Union is looking at the room left vacant by some of the Area team relocating to Edlington. So, that will only leave the old kitchen to be finished and let out to starter businesses. I’ve just had a phone call about the speed indicator sign on Littleworth Lane

explain to all the money has been there for over a year but it took some time to get it redesignated from drains to speed reduction measure and then the electricity company, who had to give permission, took absolutely ages and we had to get planning permission as well. All those hurdles are now ‘jumped’ and we are now waiting for DMBC workers to finish the job. By the time you read this it should be in and working.

Kindest Regards

RICHARD COOPER - HOLMES

Wheelers

January News First things first and a Happy New Year to all the readers of these articles from everyone here at Rossington Wheelers.

The upcoming year in 2014 promises to be massive for cycling in the area on all sorts of fronts. Of course there’s the Tour Grand Depart 3-6 July up in North/West Yorkshire with a stage finish here in Sheffield too, but there’s also ambitious plans for road racing in the Doncaster area with its very strong local professional roots. Individual clubs and some pooled events are all in the pipeline. A full daily program of rides was scheduled for the club over the Christmas break but for obvious reasons the club rides tend to be fairly sedate in the early part of January as the festive cheer is gradually ridden off! All club rides at this time of year are dependent on safe road conditions and most are at the slightly later 9.30am set-off from St Michaels. Now is the time to get out and about to get in shape for the Spring! As I may have mentioned in previous articles the sheer number of riders attending club rides and

the intention to match the ability and ambition of different riders has led to the creation of a triple option format of Sunday ride options. The A group is effectively made up of the newly formed racing section, these rides are aimed at those looking to get in shape for the racing season in March. Groups B and C remain as traditional club runs, B – 55 miles and C – a shorter 40 mile option, routes for B and C groups are published a month in advance, A group building their schedule according to requirements at that time and the needs of those riding. The formation of the Racing Section is an extension to the clubs stated ambition for 2013 to actively encourage and increase participation in local races and time trials. A total of 272 rides against the clock were undertaken via Rossington Wheelers in 2013. Another of those stated intentions, to increase the access to the sport for Junior riders is also bearing fruit and continues to be one of the clubs main ambitions for 2014. The club also has plans in place for another major charity ride in 2014 with a repeat of 2011’s

Coast to Coast in a single day ride. In the last four years the club has raised in excess of £7k for local charity and so the £10k barrier is an obvious target with this event. The clubs Annual Presentation Night has been arranged at The Welfare for Fri 7/3/2014 and details of this and all other upcoming events are available via all the usual channels including via www.rossingtonwheelers. co.uk and from chairman Les at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue.

Arthur Green receives Honour Rossington’s Arthur Green has been honoured with the British Empire Medal.

“I am delighted, Caroline Flint MP said, that Her Majesty has seen fit to award Arthur the British Empire Medal. Many people can recall being involved in the Scouts as young boys, as Arthur was when he joined. Few can recall founding a Scout Group as Arthur did with the 3rd Doncaster (Rossington) Scout Group, a group still going today. And fewer still can imagine contributing to the Scout movement for over seven decades.” “It is fitting that Arthur’s contribution is now recognised nationally by Her Majesty the Queen. I believe that Her Majesty saw in Arthur Green, not just an exceptional Scout, but an exceptional person and I hope he will treasure this honour for many years.” T

Reducing Crime & Anti-Social Behaviour in your Area Crime levels in South Yorkshire are at their lowest for over 20 years. Therefore, the chances of you being a victim remain low. This is good news! However, we need your help to maintain this. A review of crime in South Yorkshire has highlighted that a third of house burglaries and theft from motor vehicles involve an insecure door or window. By taking the simple steps of ensuring you lock your doors, shut your windows and remove all items from vehicles you can reduce the chance of being a victim. Please help us to help you and keep South Yorkshire a safe place to live and work. More crime prevention advice can be found by visiting the South Yorkshire Police website: www.southyorkshire. police.uk and clicking on the ‘Help and Advice’ section.
