welcome to the MAY 2013 edition of Rossington Today.
‘Ne’er cast a clout till May be out’ English proverb
The origin of this saying dates back to the 18th century, its meanings however are less clear. The first part means simply ‘don’t discard your winter clothing’ but ‘till May be out’ has more than one interpretation! Some think it refers to the month of May, others believe it is the May blossom of the Hawthorne that we need to wait for. Which ever version you prefer there haven’t been many opportunities to discard winter coats yet this year, and I for one hope that May will bring with it the promise of warmer weather.
The June issue will be with you around the time of the Bank Holiday at the end of May, anything you would like included should be with me by Friday 10th May quite early this month due to the way the weeks fall, so don’t miss out.
Best wishes, Paula x

Caring for Parents Hello … quick, before last month’s Cause for a Cuppa goes away! I quote … “I HOPE by this time this arrives to you, warmer temperatures would have arrived.” Umm, well … yeah, right. We took our young lad and a mate to Legoland for a few days. Great place to visit … apart from a 4 hour blizzard and coldest day in 20 years. But hey, it was great to just hang out together. We found warm stuff to do! Though Easter temperatures weren’t what we expected, Easter itself was fantastic. One thought struck me more this year than ever before was that while Jesus was on the cross, He made sure His mum had someone to care for her. (If you don’t believe me, check it out … John 19:25-27) That got me thinking about a whole bunch of people that are close to me, either at our church or Messy Church. I would like to honour all you who
8 8
ROSSINGTON TODAY
go to great lengths to care for your parents in their declining years. I know Jesus was 33-ish when He died so Mary would have probably been in her early 50’s … if that. So Mary was not really a pensioner BUT the point is that as a carer for your parents, you are in great company. Not only did Jesus do it BUT we are commanded to honour our parents (5th Commandment) … and I don’t believe that stops when we hit 18. (Yep … teens are meant to honour their parents but that is a WHOLE other article.) Many of you have done all you can to care for those who cared for you as little children. Some of our friends
are dealing with a parent with cancer. Others are going through the difficult transition of trying to provide care for them at home or if need be, at a specialist home. You spend hours holding a hand, getting cups of tea, talking with doctors … then going home exhausted and still having to sort your own family. It’s all a very difficult adjustment as your parents are ALWAYS SUPPOSED to be there and be strong. You deserve an award, but the BAFTAs don’t have a category for this. But as you do this, you are not only honouring your parents but you are providing an example and legacy to your own children. On behalf of all those who may not be able to speak for themselves, thank you for giving.

Rossington Parish Council - MAY 2013 The Easter Eggstravaganza went so well considering the weather, sunny, but a max of 4C, but well over 300 braved the cold easterly wind. The children were overloaded with chocolates and Easter Eggs. The free fairground rides were well appreciated and the bouncy castles were full. We raised over £450 through selling hot and cold drinks, the raffle, and burgers and hot dogs. Please see bottom of this article for the list of unclaimed prizes. The Parish Council working with George Sheldon has almost completed the line-up for the Vintage Vehicle and Steam show with a spectacular variety and range of exhibits, more than 200. The is being held on the Welfare on the 1st and 2nd of June starting at 10.00am and finishing at 4.00pm each day. Please come along for a great day out. There will be a wide range of attractions: Traction Engines, Vintage Tractors, Motorcycles, Miniature Steam Engines, Stationery Engines, Classic and Vintage Cars, Model Displays, Craft and Trade Stalls, Traditional Fairground Amusements, Food Stalls and Many Other Attractions. Please check @ RossoParishCoun on Twitter or look us up on Facebook on https://www.facebook. com/RossingtonParishCouncil?ref=stream high tech or what. Everything else for the year is nearly sorted, the Rossington Medieval Festival is fully done except a few minor things. Please see http:// rossingtonmedievalfestival.org.uk/ for more details and to buy tickets. These tickets will be available at AC News on King Avenue, the Welfare, the Memorial Hall, Holmescarr Centre reception, the Poacher or the Tourist Information Centre in town and, hopefully, at Tourist Information Centres at towns around Doncaster. The headline bands for the Music Festival are the Blockheads and The Jam on Saturday and Wishbone Ash and hopefully Beverley Knight on Sunday. The 10 10

first three are signed up Beverley Knight hasn’t agreed as yet. There will be 9 bands on Saturday and 8 bands on Sunday. I am hoping that the replanting of our flowers takes place soon they were good last year I’m hoping that they will be better this year, especially after the long winter we have had. We are planning for the Christmas Lights and we will be having a change from the last few years with a new company supplying the lights. A Projects Committee was held to ensure everything was in place for the Easter Eggstravaganza which from my writings above you can see it was. We discussed the Firework contract and agreed a three year deal that gave us a better display for the same price or ‘more bang for our bucks’ – ouch! At the Triple ‘A’ meeting a couple of days later a long and involved discussion took place as to who should declare an interest and to what those interests should refer to. After this was finally agreed reports were given on individual subjects that were agreed at the previous meeting; Malc Clark gave a good report on Transport and infrastructure, Bill Reynolds gave an excellent report on housing, Carol Beaumont is still working on the Retail report and there had been no progress on the Business report. I reported that a village wide consultation document had been printed and was being delivered to every household in the village. Please complete the questionnaire and return it to the collection points on the form. It is important to the future of the village. At the Parish Council meeting Malc Clark resigned and I thanked him for all his hard work. Questions were raised by the public on the transfer of the Parish assets from the old Clerk, Steve Merriman, to the new Clerk, Jim Beaumont, and they had been. An issue of kids playing football on the Circle and on the road, a bus route, and I said I would endeavour to discourage this
and move the children to a safer area. The compost level in the flower planters was raised and it would be raised, the compost that is, so the flowers are more visible. Also the lack of detail in the minutes was again raised and the Clerk agreed that they would be improved. It was announced that the Parish Council was taking over responsibility for the Carnival Association and would amalgamate it into one of the Parish’s festivals. One of the co-opted members had yet to attend a meeting and the Chair was asked to contact her. Rossington Councillor’s update - MAY 2013 We have managed to get a grant from Wren to match fund a sum of money that we had to enhance the skate park on the Welfare, work will start in a couple of months or so, after all the paper work including getting planning permission is done. Wren is an organisation that gives money to projects that are near a waste recycling centre to help local people. The Sensory Garden at Holmescarr will soon be completed and ready for opening. It will of course take a couple of years to mature and grow into the planned garden, but even so it will be a nice place to sit out and enjoy the quiet in the late spring and summer.
20 20
My wife Janet has designed it and done most of the work with the help of the prisoners from Lindholme prison. She has brought it in on budget through a difficult winter. The final work on Holmescarr is being planned now and the paperwork started. When this is completed there will be starter desks, to help new businesses, and a nursery to complement the before and after school club. We are having some trouble with anti-social behaviour if not downright criminal acts obviously by an adult, against children just off Radburn Road no one has been hurt, but putting glass and nails in a goalmouth and cutting down and stealing the net, in my mind that adult deserves to be locked up. Crime and ASB is low, but the statistics
are not being helped by the above mentioned criminal activity. We are still half the Doncaster average. By reporting everything we will keep on top of it. We are having a purge on dog fouling, this is the disgusting action of a few dog owners who do not clear up after their dogs. The Welfare fields have 16 or 18 kids teams playing on there and not clearing up is a health hazard also. This is the same across the whole village from Brodsworth Way play area to Bankwood play area. PICK IT UP. T

Rossington Main
By the time you read this article the fate of the 1st team will be known as they will have just one game remaining, an away fixture at Clipstone. Fortunately a productive March where we gained two home victories may have sealed our survival in the NCEL, as the points gained gave us an 11 point advantage over the relegation places, however some Clubs have matches in hand. The return of local lad Ben Hunter has boosted our strike rate and his 2 goals versus Yorkshire Amateur gave us the edge in a comfortable 5-2 win. His hat-trick a fortnight later was crucial in a tight 4-3 victory over Hallam, but generally the entire squad have worked hard since a humiliating defeat at Emley. Sadly we exited the Senior Cup at the quarter-final stage when visitors Staveley survived an excellent
Despite the unseasonal spring weather the bowling season commenced on schedule and League matches began early April. Some repair and improvement work has been carried out by the members to the edges of the far green, and once completed will add to the general appearance of the site. There is a little work to be done on the seating but come May I am certain the bowling greens will be a pleasant location to enjoy a warm afternoon or evening playing or watching the game. The Club are still keen to encourage new bowlers to take up the sport and are currently working on an idea to involve youngsters, more information on this in the June edition. The Thursday morning sessions for beginners and improvers begin on May 2nd at 10am. This initially started 22 22

Our only chance of Cup success now lies with the 2nd team who play Bawtry Town in the semi-final of the Doncaster Senior League Premier Division Cup. Victory there would guarantee a Final appearance versus Sutton Rovers on May 3rd. The fixture schedule for the 2nd team is quite crammed with just a month of the season remaining, and so they will do well to gain more League points and possible Cup success. There is some football to watch down at Oxford Street in early May as the 2nd team play Hemsworth Town

May 8th, and the Doncaster League Challenge Cup Final on Fri. May 10th. Both have a 7pm kick-off. May I take this opportunity to thank all businesses and individuals who have lent their support to the club through this current year, and to the players and volunteers who ensure that the village continues to provide football at this level on limited resources. ROSSINGTON MWBC out as a Ladies event but has grown to include all. If you are interested in taking up the game then Thursday mornings are an ideal opportunity. For those at work or at school at this time then come down and speak to someone when the greens are in use, you will be made welcome and be given the opportunity to sample the sport before committing to any membership fees. The members voted on resurrecting internal competitions and so a General Handicap and Doubles Handicap will start once entries are received. On vacant League dates we are also hoping to run “spot competitions and tournaments, which proved quite popular last season.
South Yorkshire have again selected Rossington for one of their annual major competitions. The S.Yorks Gents Pairs will be held on Sunday May 26th with top class bowling all day from 10am onwards. A good entry is anticipated with County standard bowlers in attendance, with the Bowls Club and the Welfare providing refreshments and food all day. Spectating is free but finding a seat on the day may prove difficult. For further information or enquiries about crown green bowling in Rossington contact the Secretary on 867221. T

Round 1 of the AAD Gas Handicap Time Trial League got underway on Wed 10/4/13. The competition is a weekly open event with 20 rounds scheduled and Rossington Wheelers club members qualify to compete in the league competition that also has Veteran (+50), Junior (-16) and Lady categories as well as the AAD Gas trophy for the overall points winner. In favourable conditions Rossington’s Michael Brammall representing Sugar Cane Velo Club clocked a rapid 14.12 time to be quickest on the night, Shaun Randall was the fastest Wheeler at 15.17, Stephen Patterson and Cheryl Craven were the quickest Junior and Lady entrants and debutant Rob Shepherd was the fastest Veteran and also fastest on the handicap stopping the clock in 18.37.

By May the roadworks will (touch wood) have gone and so 6.45pm at Ancient Lane, Hatfield Woodhouse is the place to sign on and race the full 10 mile course up and down to the Blue Bell at Blaxton. There may be other informal rides organised amongst club members and there are also ‘Feature rides’ with earlier starts and greater distance and/ or difficulty, so the above is the default guideline to club rides, but it is subject to alteration but not without notice being posted so please check club notices closely. Club rides coming up in May include Southwell and Lincoln at 80 miles but with shorter 50 mile alternatives also organised and 100 mile rides across Humber Bridge and then in the Dales over the Spring bank holiday. 14 members embarked on 120 miles to Fridaythorpe on Good Friday, for many their first ‘century’ ride. Easter yielded further 100+ mile rides to Market Rasen and a monster effort via Glossop and Holmefirth that four members rode, partly in snow! To keep a close eye on club rides
and activities please refer to:- www. rossingtonwheelers.co.uk , facebook - ‘Rossington Wheelers Cycling Club’ or twitter - ‘@rossowheelers’ or pop in
