Tickhill Horticultural Society Our February speaker Ray Creek kept his subject ’Orchids in the Home - Simplified’ Explaining simply and clearly what to do and answering the many questions members had, assuring us that we should not be deterred from trying. When asked whether a potted orchid should be watered down from the base, he responded “Does it rain upwards?” It was a very enjoyable evening with first prize in the raffle being a superb orchid. The next meeting is on Thursday 29th April in the Methodist school room, when our speaker will be local plants man and garden designer Jamie Dunstan of the Plant of Special Interest Nursery in Braithwell. His subject, ’Planting design for a Chelsea garden’ may give us a little insight into what will be happening in May as we look forward to another Chelsea Flower Show. Start 7.15pm - visitors welcome (£2).

BURGLARIES: The areas of Rossington, Tickhill and villages, have recently been subject to a speight of Burglaries. The offenders are entering the properties and stealing the car keys and taking the car. Advice from South Yorkshire Police is, make sure that doors are locked as a number of offences have been of a "sneak in type" where the offender does not have to force entry into the premises. Take car keys to bed so they are not easily accessible. If possible utilise a secondary method of securing your vehicle, ie wheel clamp, steering locks. SYP is doing a lot of work in regards to this problem, including an increase of patrols in the relevevant areas, utilising the Road Policing and Road Crime Groups.
SPEEDING: We have received a number of complaints of speeding in Rossington, Tickhill and the villages. SYP and DMBC are utilising various methods, incorporating the use of the speed guns and digital speed display devices. In the past month, 4 motorists have received fixed penalty notices, 3 have been sent on speed awareness courses and 10 have been stopped and verbally warned about their speed.

Top tips for Running for weight loss By Bawtry Health & Fitness Studio 1) Make sure you start your run fully fuelled and hydrated. Most people find that a good sized meal will take 2 – 3 hours to digest before you can run. Stay off the caffeinated drinks before a run such as coffee, tea and cola. Drink water or fruit juices. 2) If you will be running for more than an hour take some carbohydrate out with you. This can be a banana or a sports carbohydrate drink. If you choose anything other than the sports drink, you will need to also take out some water to stay hydrated. 3) When you get back from your run have something to eat within 15 mins. A banana or any wholegrain carbohydrate will do the trick – perhaps you prefer an oatcake, a bowl of cereal or a slice of wholegrain toast with jam on. Eating within 15 minutes of your run takes advantage of the increased enzyme sensitivity in your body to absorb carbohydrates and refuel ready for next time. ‘All I would say is set a program which is achievable to aim for and build into it, and try running with a group or friend its more fun!' Local retailer donates money to Northgate Pre-School Playgroup Local retailer Taylors of Tickhill, has donated £550 to Northgate Pre-School Playgroup, which will use the funds to purchase new computer equipment to aid the children’s development as well as wet weather clothes so the children can enjoy playing outside in all weathers. Taylors has been raising money for its local community through the sale of specific products in store and has been able to donate the money raised with the help of the charity Making A Difference – Locally (MADL). The MADL charity was formed in May 2008 with the intention of assisting more than 2,000 independent retailers throughout the UK with raising money for their local communities. The charity works by a specified amount of the cost of certain products promoted in store being allocated to the retailer’s MADL charity fund. For instance, this month for every Ole El Paso Original Enchiladas pack purchased in store, 5p of the sale will go into the retailer’s MADL fund to be donated to Pictured is Christopher Taylor presenting the their chosen charity. cheque to some of the staff and children of The charity was created by Nisa-Today’s and Northgate Playgroup Costcutter Supermarkets and the stores participating in the scheme are all members of NisaToday’s or independent retailers who are part of the Costcutter Supermarkets Group. Christopher Taylor, owner of Taylors of Tickhill, commented, “We chose the village playgroup because it provides a valuable service and is a great asset to the local community. The Making A Difference- Locally charity does exactly what it says on the tin. It puts money into the local community and encourages people to shop locally therefore benefiting everyone. It ensures a thriving busy shop as well as supporting local organisations. Thank you to all who shop locally” Playgroup Manager Julie Addison said : on behalf of the Committee and staff of Northgate Preschool, I should like to say a big thank you to Mr Taylor of ‘Taylor’s’ for putting us forward for the ‘making difference’ scheme and to the customers who regularly shop there. We are very grateful to have received the cheque for £550.00 and look forward to purchasing items that will enrich and benefit the daily play of the children in our care. We are a charity run Playgroup and rely on fundraising activities to buy new equipment for the group and so this donation is especially welcome! We are particularly looking forward to purchasing a new printer/copier so that the children can print off their designs created on our lap top. We also wish to purchase some all weather playsuits so that the children can explore the outside environment whatever the weather and our busy Baby & Toddler group are also looking forward to buying some new baby toys.

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club
Despite the cold weather attendances at recent meetings have been very good with one or two visitors / prospective members present to hear some very interesting speakers. We meet at 10.30 AM (coffee served from 10.00 AM) on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 10.30AM at Tickhill Cricket Pavilion and visitors will be welcome. Our programme of talks for the next three months includes: 8th April. “My Polish Experience” by Rose Katuszonek 22nd April. “Court Room Artist” by John Gilbert. 13th May. “Pennine Journey” by Stephen Gay. (Stephen is a fairly regular speaker at the club and one not to be missed). 27th May.” Panama Canal – History and Construction” by Dr Murray Wilson. 10th June. “Dance Band Days” by Jeffery Turner 24th June. “Laura’s Story” by Mrs L Thickett. Surely there is something for everybody in this programme which, taken together with the opportunity for fellowship offered by Probus to retired men and the opportunity to escape for a morning the household tasks which seem to come with retirement, makes the club irresistible for many of us.
Tickhill & District Lions You will all be aware that Tickhill & District Lions raise money and give our time to help good causes within our community of Tickhill, Wadworth, Rossington, Harworth, Bircotes, and Bawtry. However, together with the 900 other clubs within the UK & Ireland and over 45,000 clubs worldwide, we also raise money to help those in need around the world. When we do this we are very careful to ensure that the money we donate gets directly to the people who need it, and we frequently choose to support projects through the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF). So this month I wanted to update you all on some of the work that the LCIF has been doing recently to help those in need. I am sure that everyone remembers where they were when news of the devastating 7.0 earthquake in Haiti broke. After the earthquake struck, Lions Clubs immediately responded, and through donations from individual clubs like Tickhill & District Lions, the LCIF has mobilized nearly US$2.4 million to date. The LCIF, like all Lions organisations, funds its own administrative costs and so ensures that every penny donated is spent directly on the humanitarian project, often enlisting the help of Lions Clubs local to the area where help is needed. In Haiti more than 3,000 people are now being sheltered in three tent cities in Delmas, Blanchard and Carrefour-Feuille that Haitian Lions have established. Lions are continuing to work to provide sanitation, kitchens and health clinics, and the LCIF is also leveraging Lions' donations through collaboration with other NGOs and corporations providing relief. One of Lions' greatest strengths is the support we give to our fellow members in times of need. When disasters strike, LCIF and Lions from around the world are there to support one another. Our collective response to the disaster in Haiti is a great example of how the money you donate through Tickhill & District Lions helps those in need around the world as well as within our community. If you’d like to learn more please visit the ‘News & Events’ page on our website (www.tickhill-lions.com) where you will find a short video about the work we’re doing in Haiti as well as links to the LCIF website which has more information and examples of other ways that Lions help.

The Parish of Wadworth with Loversall There have been some exciting changes taking place in Parish of Wadworth with Loversall. After some 2 years worth of consideration and work, back in September 2009, the PCC took some key decisions about structure and style of worship. These were: 1. 2. 3.
Have one morning service at 9:30 at St John the Baptist which will be the focus of traditional Anglican worship in the parish Have the afternoon service at St Katherine’s, within which, over time, we will look at alternative worship styles and forms which will appeal to wider and different parts of the population A midweek communion service at St Katherine’s will be held at least once a month
Some unkind gossip has been circulating about the reasons for the changes which are plainly untrue. The changes were not made to save money, they were not made because the Vicar is too lazy to do 2 services on a Sunday morning . The Vicar certainly does not intend to close St. Katherine’s church. So what was the effect, well compared to previous years, the first 3 months saw higher attendance if all services were included and this was with snow falls clearly affecting attendance at some services. Most pleasing were the high number of people attending church who do not normally attend. If you live in the Parish, don’t listen to the gossip but come along and listen to the Gospel instead.
Tickhill Residents’ Association Neighbourhood Management – Debbie John-Lewis and two of her colleagues joined members on 17 February and gave us an interesting account of their work. They have a large geographical area to cover of some 12 parishes, with Tickhill and Bawtry the major centres. The Neighbourhood Team both works within the area and coordinates the work of other council departments, chasing them up on our behalf to achieve results. What follows is some of their work this past year. They have worked with Tickhill Town Council on the new Christmas lights, the replacement of the avenue of trees at the Spital and the extension to the play area in St. Mary’s Road. There is a current operation to address fly tipping, which is a huge problem and an eyesore in this parish; evidence has been collected which hopefully will lead to prosecutions. A Community Crime Fighter initiative has been introduced across Doncaster and to date the Bawtry Tickhill Neighbourhood Team have one local volunteer from Wadworth, the Team are hoping to acquire additional Volunteers from the Tickhill Area, If you are interested in finding out more about the scheme – telephone 01302 736000. Work is done on crime prevention. Holiday watch is on offer to check on properties when residents are away and action has been taken to reduce cold calling at Castle Close properties. There are a few free Smartwater packs left for property security – telephone 73600 and leave details for our Neighbourhood Watch team if interested. We now have additional litter and dog-fouling bins and had snow cleared for us from the pavements in front of the Market Place shops (the first time most of us have seen this – thank you!) The team’s priorities for 2010, based on concerns raised by residents, are: Tackle fly-tipping and litter Dog fouling (possibility of fixed penalty notices is being explored) Speeding traffic Pot-holes in the roads, especially after the severe winter John Hoare

Estfeld School Recently the Reception Class at Estfeld visited Cannon Hall Farm. The pupils had a wonderful day and enjoyed learning about the animals which included pigs, sheep, goats llamas and even Kune Kune pigs who were recent arrivals from New Zealand! They saw many new arrivals during the day as it was peak lambing time and some of the lambs were only 2-3 hours old. The day was very active and the children enjoyed the delights of the adventure playground before leaving. More than a few enjoyed a nap on their journey home!

With sixty scarecrows, attractions and promotions in many shops we hope our scarecrow festival on Saturday 1st May will be a great day out for our community. Programmes, price £2 each will be on sale from KSM after Easter and the event will run between 10am and 5pm on the day. Please do all you can to spread the word.
Thanks to the two dozen folk and groups who have volunteered to clear litter alongside the DMBC team at the end of March, enabling us to have a litter free environment into April and beyond. It will only remain tidy with everyone's help in not dropping litter. Look out for the children’s posters around the shops. Together we can surely make difference. Can’t we? Tickhill St Mary’s C of E Primary and Nursery School National Book Day The school council decided to celebrate National Book Day with all the children dressing up as their favourite book character. On the day the school was filled with Harry Potters, White Rabbits, Pirates and other literature heroes. There were some truly fantastic outfits where parents and children had come up with some really imaginative ideas, including an alien head made out of papier- mâché. Others had added their own twist with face paint and home made accessories. The judge, Mary Poppins (aka Mrs Millard), really had a most difficult job to choose the winner from each class, who received a book token. It was a fabulous day which everyone enjoyed, including the staff who took the chance to dress up as well. Some Tickhill residents may have worried about seeing pirates, witches and the Mad Hatter milling around the shops at lunchtime…. Tesco Vouchers If you have passed the school recently, you may have seen the banner saying that we are now collecting Tesco vouchers again. This time they will go towards sports equipment for the children. Last year we used them to obtain some lovely ICT equipment. If you have any vouchers you don’t want, we would be very grateful to receive them and use them towards equipment for the children. Thank you! Katarina Martin, School Secretary Tickhill St Mary’s

Rubbish becomes decorative art. The Super Learning Day project on recyling saw Y7 turning old jeans and sweet wrappers into panels to create a decorative panel which when finished will be hung in the school atrium. Thanks go to Cadbury’s for their help in providing disused wrappers for the project. Urban culture was explored by Y8. Activities ranged from writing a ‘rap’, doing street dancing, painting murals and learning to play Urban Street games such as ‘Rocker Ball’, ‘Ultimate Frisby ‘ and ‘Tchouk Ball’ Other activities that day included intensive revision in Science and Maths for exams the following week.
Learning for Life Succeeding Together
MAYFLOWER ANIMAL SANCTUARY, NARROW LANE, BAWTRY Hopefully these cold wet days are behind us and we can look forward to some sunshine. We all try hard to keep our spirits up in the winter months, but it is not easy. Too much washing, not enough daylight hours, not enough volunteers (lots of people seem to hibernate in the winter months) But we have to stay positive and make sure that all these dogs and cats are in the best possible place, until their forever loving homes come along. Our new build is finally finished, and what a difference it has made. We now have a separate laundry room, vets room, puppy block and socialising room (with a conservatory no less) To top it all we have our very first resident, a Rotti with her 9 puppies. She is called Zena a lovely 2 year old that had been living rough until some very kind people took her in and then realised she was about to give birth to her babies. We came to the rescue and just hours after having her babies she was brought to us. So our new build was well and truly Christened. We have some really lovely dogs and cats in our Sanctuary at the moment from cross breeds to pedigrees, Including 2 lovely affectionate Whippets (one x) they are Misty and Minor still young dogs and would make lovely pets. There owner unfortunately could no longer take care of them. Our Cyprus project is well under way and we are expecting our first 3 dogs to come into Robin Hood Airport mid March. We are all very excited about this project and the majority of dogs that will be here are White Cyprus Poodles which are very affectionate small dogs, the type that we are asked for constantly . If you would like to know more about these dogs or the project please call us we will be happy to tell you more. Our vets bills are still our highest expenditure (£33,000 in 2009) so we are always looking for new fund raising projects to boost our coffers. If anyone has some time to spare to take on board or help with fundraising please call us we would be very grateful of more help, as there is never enough time in a day and extra hands are always welcome. Our fund raising Black Tie Ball is to be on the 19th June this year and will again be held at The Olde Bell Hotel at Barnby Moor which is a fabulous venue, with a four course dinner, dancing and disco. Not forgetting Trax FM will be there to support us. It is always a popular event and the place to be seen. So if you would like tickets they are £35 each call 07840203688 we will be happy to reserve them for you. We have numerous fund raising events through out the year and are desperate for people to help. Either to organise or quite simply rattle collecting tins. If you think you can help please call me and I will be happy to let you know when and where our fund raising events will be. We are also recruiting for our Charity shop in Manton. Again at the moment we are unable to open all week as we do not have the amount of volunteers required. The recession is hitting us hard, and our donations are down by 50%. So the fund raising Ball is particularly one event that must succeed as this is one of our most popular fund raisers. The play concerns socialite and novelist Charles Condomine (played by Phil Healing) who invites the eccentric medium and clairvoyant, Madame Arcati (Jane Wheatley) to his house to conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when he is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and temperamental first wife, Elvira (Helen Shepherd), following the séance. Elvira makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles's marriage to his second wife, Ruth (played by Rebecca Fowler), who cannot see or hear the ghost. The seven strong cast is completed by Natalie Young in the role of Edith, Tony Abbott as Doctor Bradman, and Liz Atkinson as Mrs Bradman. Performances start at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available from the SPAR on Station Rd, Bawtry, priced £7 (£6 for concessions) and £12 for the buffet evening performance on Saturday 22nd.

NEW SEASON LOOMS AT TICKHILL CRICKET CLUB The 2010 season is just around the corner and all at Tickhill Cricket Club are eagerly anticipating another exciting campaign with some excellent cricket along the way. And, just in case you have hibernated for the winter and were unaware, it is also our 150th anniversary! The first XI will be captained for the first time by Ashley Fiddler (pictured), with Tom Barnett as his vice captain. We hope this youthful leadership team will quickly settle in and build on the success of last year, when in our first year back in the Premier League we acquitted ourselves very well. Steve Ramshaw, with Paul Shepherd as his deputy, takes over the reigns in the second XI, as they look to bounce back into Division 2 and Mark Wilkinson will continue in his second season as third team skipper. With a mid week team and six junior teams there will be over 100 games of cricket to cram into the next 20 weeks – we must count ourselves lucky to have, in Brian Sissons, an excellent groundsman of such sunny disposition! Plans for celebrating the anniversary are now well developed and a weekend to note for your diary is 18-20 June when we are holding a Marquee ball on the Friday evening, hoping to host a dinner for ex-players on Saturday 19th and playing against an Old England XI on the Sunday. The Old England XI Manager Jim Parks has announced his team and it includes legends such as Derek Randall, John Lever, Joey Benjamin and Peter Such. Tables for the Marquee ball and lunch at the Old England game are still available although demand is high - if you are interested get in touch sooner rather than later! Junior outdoor nets on Friday nights will be starting soon – get ready for that relaxing end of week drink with the mouth watering BBQ sending appetising aromas around the ground. No finer way to start the weekend.

Conservative Candidate gets out and about in Tickhill Matt Stephens, the new conservative candidate for the Don Valley constituency, standing against Labour’s high profile MP Caroline Flint, is basing himself in Hatfield for the duration of the campaign – expected to end on polling day May 6th. In the last month he has been door knocking across Don Valley including in Branton and Auckley. This listening exercise has brought to light resident feelings on issues such as immigration where the message has come through loud and clear that voters feel Central Government has failed to heed their concerns over the influx of immigrants into Britain. “The sheer number of people and the different nationalities are overwhelming our public services“ he says “It’s not a racist issue – it’s a leadership issue”. “People tell me they are angry with the Leadership of this Government for not being more like the Aussies, careful of who they choose to come to the country and strong on the message that they are coming to Britain which means they will need to speak English and live within our values and culture. What makes them so disappointed is that no-one has been listening to them.” Educated at Garforth Comprehensive and Lancaster University where he studied politics and international affairs, his first task was to set up his own business in York and having seen young people at a loose end – he also set up a highly successful youth activity programme –Global York. With no background in active politics he took on the challenge of overturning an 8,000 Labour majority because he sees the seat as “winnable”. “I was so fed up with what has been happening over three Labour terms of office and things going from bad to worse, I decided it was time to stand up and be counted. On my door stepping campaign I have discovered a lot of people with the same feelings – often of outrage, feeling they have been conned – and they have promised me their support. He sees Don Valley the election as a two-horse race – “Any vote other than for me is in effect a vote for Labour. “He stresses “In this election is no place for the traditional protest vote. We have to save the country from another four years of clunking fist of top down Labour government” Twitters emails and blogs play a big part in his communications strategy – for more information visit www.matt-stephens.co.uk

General Election Candidate
Edwin Simpson, a longstanding Liberal Democrat councillor, has been selected to contest the Don Valley constituency in the forthcoming General Election. Edwin, who has lived in the constituency for 44 years, has, for much of that time, been a prominent councillor on Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. He championed the campaign that exposed the scandal at local level, to which all Doncastrians regrettably refer as 'Donnygate'. Edwin has also played a leading role in pushing forward the environmental agenda, including promoting measures to mitigate the effects of climate change, particularly the effects of flooding to which large parts of Doncaster are exposed. He has also succeeded in persuading Doncaster Council, in regard to planning development, to insist on ‘on-site’ renewable energy production on new building schemes for both housing estates and industry. Edwin is educated to Higher National Certificate in mechanical engineering. He also studied civil engineering before specialising in materials handling, principally in the coal mining industry, whilst employed as a project engineer. With the sad decline in the mining industry, Edwin decided to go it alone and became self-employed.

DEBT It is impossible to avoid the word. The country has debts of billions of pounds, figures which are hard to imagine let alone understand. Britain is not alone; Greece has such massive debts that the drastic measures they have been forced to introduce are causing riots in the streets. Many other nations have a heavy national debt. Portsmouth Football club has debts that have driven it into Administration and certain relegation. Even the top premiership clubs all have huge debts. Manchester United makes an operating profit of £91 million but has a net debt of £716 million and pays £68 million in interest. Arsenal do better; they make a profit of £58 million but have debt of a mere £297 million. Meanwhile multi-millionaires come forward to buy prestigious football clubs for the fun of losing money and annoying the fans. Some banks seem to make huge profits, helped no doubt by the high interest rates they charge on their loans to football clubs. Others have been rescued by we humble taxpayers so that they can give obscene bonuses to undeserving employees. Lots of people seem to love debt. They stuff their wallets and purses with credit cards and store cards and use them for instant gratification of their ambitious wants - and then pay out heavy interest charges. Unless this practice is rigidly monitored and controlled, trouble can come in the form of repossession of a home or a visit to bankruptcy court. People claim that they use credit cards for major purchases because, if things go wrong, the Credit Card Company will provide compensation. Wouldn’t it be a whole lot better if compensation only came with the use of a Debit Card? There is one large debt that many people feel obliged to incur: a loan to buy their first house, called a mortgage, which commits them to interest payments for fifteen or twenty years or more. Cautious people pay off the mortgage as quickly as they can. Others take out a second mortgage for a larger property, a house extension or conservatory. Young people are incredulous or bored when old folk bang on about their early married life, seated on packing cases, sleeping on a bed handed down by helpful relatives and using a borrowed pram for the firstborn. Such austerity is not for them. Parents incur debts to pay for a wedding costing tens of thousands and a honeymoon in Hawaii. The couple return to well furnished home - largely bought on tick. The old folk who have lived with harder times, wartime austerity and utility furniture still see debt as a dangerous, contagious disease. They used to scrimp and save until they could buy with cash. Is all this debt carried by countries, companies and consumers such a good thing? Perhaps it is time for an inoculation of Prudence Vaccine to counteract what could now be a rampant pandemic. As the wise old lady said: ‘Eat it up, wear it out, make it do or do without’. Hardly likely these days! Philip Mottram

Airport News by Clare Wilson, Environment & Community Manager Robin Hood Airport attracted the attention of aviation enthusiasts in February with the arrival of the world’s largest aircraft, the Antonov 225. Only one AN225 MRYIA (Dream) was ever built by the company ANTONOV and this giant of the skies, operated by specialist Antonov Airlines, Ukraine, landed in Doncaster to collect a generator which was urgently needed at a Power Station in Lahore, Pakistan. Paul Rodwell, Cargo Director from Peel Airports Group said: “The AN225 is the largest cargo freighter in the world and we are absolutely thrilled that it was able to land here in Yorkshire, a first for the region.” Moving from large aircraft to much smaller aircraft, the Airport is pleased to welcome the arrival of Kinch Aviation to the Airport Business Park. Kinch Aviation, run by Paul and Deborah Kinch, has relocated to Hangar 2 at Doncaster Sheffield Airport from Gamston Airport, in Nottinghamshire. Kinch Aviation maintain, service and repair corporate jets has moved in to Doncaster Sheffield Airport Business Park thanks to an upturn in business. Kinch Aviation was appointed as a Cessna Citation Authorised Service Centre in 2008 once they had completed a large investment in training, spares and tooling. The company was started in 2001 to provide high quality support to Business Aircraft in the North of England and today provides services for over 50 aircraft from across Europe and as far afield as Moscow and South Africa. Mike Morton, Airport Director said: “We are delighted to welcome Kinch Aviation to our growing network of businesses that have relocated to the airport business park. The fact that we are attracting such a high quality of businesses to Doncaster is great for the town and will no doubt have a positive impact on our business.” Kinch Aviation has grown rapidly over the last five years and now employs a local workforce of highly skilled engineers. Specialising in the Cessna Citation range of Corporate Jets Kinch employ 15 engineers and have 4 apprentices on their books at present from South Yorks and surround areas.
Following on from concerns raised by Bawtry residents at the recent Planning Committee in January, the Airport has commenced a portable noise monitoring programme in Bawtry. The programme started on the 17th February 2010 on St Martins Avenue and will move on to other locations in Bawtry throughout the year. The noise data obtained from the portable noise monitoring unit will inform residents of the exact noise exposure levels experienced at their property. Furthermore, the data will be used to review qualification for the Sound Insulation Grant Scheme offered by the Airport. For further information about noise monitoring please contact me at the Airport or email environment@robinhoodairport.com. And finally, for those who have had enough of the slippery conditions and chilly winds, easyJet, the largest UK airline, has launched a massive summer seat sale, with up to 25% off flights between 19
April and 15 July 2010. A wide selection of low-cost, frequent flights from Doncaster Sheffield can be booked now to Barcelona, Prague, Majorca and Faro as well as low cost flights every day to Amsterdam.

Tickhill Scouts
The Phoenix Explorers went to the annual Freezer Camp earlier this month. Usually the camp has no snow, is relatively warm and is anything but a freezer camp. This year it was quite different. They woke up to 4 inches of snow and experienced arctic conditions. They all came home much wiser having had a totally amazing experience. The Friday night scouts took part in the District Bowling competition. There were 58 entrants and Nathan Wall won the highest score for his age group. Both Scout troops battled it out at Quasar in Sheffield with the Friday night Scouts winning the competition. Many more inter-troop competitions are planned and it is hoped these competitions will continue to foster a healthy rivalry between both sections and ease any integration that may happen in the future. The explorer unit challenged the Maltby Explorer Unit to a dance off for the MESSY (Maltby Explorer Scouts South Yorkshire) Cup as part an ongoing series of competitions between both units. About 35 explorers turned up. They were taught various disco dancing styles by a dancing teacher from the Sir Thomas Wharton School. A competition then ensued which was judged by various members of staff from the same school. Unfortunately, despite some very vigorous and highly entertaining dancing, Maltby won. It is now Maltby’s turn to challenge the Phoenix explorers to some other activity. Phoenix went to London to attempt the Monopoly Challenge. Despite the best efforts of London Transport cancelling a serious amount of tube trains the youngsters managed to complete the challenge with time to spare. It was planned they would go into central London in the evening but, as it was raining very hard and they were all tired, no-one went and they stayed in the Youth Hostel playing Monopoly!! Once again, these young people proved that they could be taken anywhere and were a credit to their parents and themselves. Whilst we have managed to support a second scout troop, we are struggling to keep the Beaver Colony open. To make best use of the leaders we already have, it has been necessary to reduce the frequency of Beaver meetings to fortnightly. It would be really good if there were some people out there who would volunteer to offer a similar fortnightly commitment and then we could return to our weekly schedule. Gala planning continues and we are currently sourcing the main attraction for the afternoon. If you or your friends want to run a stall, organise an event on the field or enter a float in the procession please contact Pam Kitchen on 743430 to register your interest. 50| Tickhill Today

TICKHILL BROWNIES It is sad that the Guiding unit in Tickhill was forced to close due to a shortage of adults prepared to give up a little of their time to give something back to the community. I accept that we all lead increasingly busy lives in these modern times but I live in hope that it will be possible to re-activate the Guide unit at some time in the future. The Brownie units, as was Guides, are full to bursting, and it is a pity that when they reach the age of 10 there is nothing in the Guiding movement for them to move onto, sometimes girls just like to be with girls and so Scouting is not always an option. Qualified leaders in the Brownies are also at a premium, at the moment there is me and my daughter, Katy. As Katy is currently at university she can only assist during holiday times. I am fortunate to have a number of teenagers and some parents who come to help me and I could not do without their assistance. I live in hope that when the teenagers get older they will want to become qualified leaders. We are now half way through our Guiding centenary year and we have a lot planned. Next month I will be taking the Monday Brownies away on Pack Holiday to Hesley Woods. We are in the process of planning what our scarecrow should look like for the Scarecrow festival in May. Our plans for our Gala float are well advanced, and in August a number of us will be going to FUSION at Harewood House. FUSION is part of the Girlguiding Centenary Camp and there will be representatives from around the world with many thousands of girls from all over the world in attendance. Katy and I will be staying for a Brownie Sleepover at Harewood House with 8 of the Brownies after the event. Phew! On top of this our regular weekly meetings continue, recent activities have included preparations for Mothers Day, and Easter. Girlguiding can be very rewarding, for us adults, as well as the girls, I have made friends from all over the country through various events over the years, if you are interested in ‘Lending a Hand’ as the Brownie motto says, please contact me, new leaders are always welcome. Tickhill Town Council Newsletter The last month has seen a lot of tidying up of various Council matters and the following information may be useful to you: After a great deal of personal involvement with the many parishes within her remit Mrs John-Lewis has now arranged a schedule of future visits to Town/ . Parish meetings and either she or her deputy, Mr Michael Eardley, of Neighbourhood Management will visit Tickhill Town Council meetings in March, June, September and December. They do of course visit other organisations in the Town so will not be out of touch. We would like to thank them for putting so much time into Tickhill in the 18 months or so in their present positions. PC Dewsnap can visit the Town Council only when his shift pattern allows but he submits a monthly report so we know what is happening in the area. Fly–tipping and speed gun exercises have been undertaken recently and inconsiderate parking has also been tackled. The National Council of Local Authorities has recently published new Standing Orders for Local Councils and New Financial regulations which incorporate new legislation. The Council will therefore shortly be reviewing these in conjunction with their existing arrangements – although it not expected that there will be need for many changes. Councillors were hoping to have arranged a meeting with the DMBC Cabinet Member responsible for Highways and Drainage but, unfortunately, he is presently ill and there will obviously be a delay in arranging the meeting. There have been some good responses to the “Trees Appeal” mentioned in the last letter and next month I shall be able to let you have up to date figures about the sums received. Of course I am aware that some groups will respond in due course but, for anyone who has temporarily forgotten, now is the opportunity to act. Tickhill and District Local History Society Unfortunately the closing date for contributions to this issue of Tickhill Today is almost a week before our March meeting so we are not able to report on how people enjoyed exploring Tickhill’s archives. All we can say is that if the evening’s success anywhere near matches the hard work being put in to it then it will be a very good meeting indeed. We will report fully next month. Our February meeting was a nostalgic experience for those of us who had lived through World War II and something of a shock to those whose memories did not stretch quite so far back. Corey Garner gave a fascinating talk about rations in WW2 and showed samples of one person’s weekly ration of staple foods such as cheese, butter, meat, milk, etc. How did we survive! Corey lived through WW2 as a boy in Mexborough and was able to pepper his talk with many personal memories which were shared by many of those present. Thank you Corey for a very entertaining evening. On April 15th local history becomes very local when Roy Taylor will give a talk entitled “Taylors Tales – a history of Taylors of Tickhill”. As usual the meeting will be at 7.30PM in the Methodist Schoolroom in Northgate and visitors will be welcome. Finally, although we are a history society we follow the present day retail trend of making special offers. If you have not got round to joining the Society yet but would like to do so, now may be a good time because your initial membership will last until September 2011 and you will get next year’s membership at present prices which are £6 for adults, £5 for Concessions, and £9 for families. Junior membership is free for students in full time education.
