Welcome to the

February 2019 edition

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” Leo Buscaglia As we enter February – the month of love, perhaps we should remember that love has many forms. In the quote above, Leo Buscaglia speaks of many ways of showing that you care, and that as a society we care about all of those around us. Random acts of kindness, however small, have the power to at the very least put a small smile on someone’s face. So even if you don’t have a special someone in February perhaps you could have a go at extending some love.

As always, we welcome some new advertisers this month as well as lots of long-standing ones who continue to advertise within our pages as a great way of getting customers. If you contact any this month don’t forget to tell them where you found them. The March issue will be delivered to you late February. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 8th February. We will be celebrating our 14th Birthday in March. It is hard to believe that so many years have passed since the first ‘Today’ magazine was (nervously) produced. Enjoy February and I will be back in a months’ time with your March magazine.

Best wishes,

Last year, RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch spent over 18,500 hours caring for animals brought to us in need; we found homes for over 870 domestic animals and cared for over 350 wildlife; all of which was made possible by generous donations, whether in the form of time, money or items for our shops. We could not survive as a branch without the continued support from our community, so from the team and the animals at your local RSPCA branch, we would like to say a huge ‘thank you’. Going forward, there are many ways to help us with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring us through our Safe Haven programme and attending our events. We have charity shops at Bawtry, Rotherham, Rossington and Thorne. At the Animal Centre we rehome the animals in our care and have a pet shop on VLWH IRU DOO \RXU UHTXLUHPHQWV We also provide a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk

Dear Friends, One of the things I do as a Minister pastoring Č´ YH FKXUFKHV LV WR ȆMXJJOHȇ ZLWK ZRUN IDPLO\ DQG pleasure. Each second is precious to me, but I also plan to rest and relate with my family. I once read a book with a chapter about relationships. It suggested that we represent our work, ego and relationships with a rubber ball, an orange and a glass cup respectively. I believe that it will take a good professional juggler to juggle these three items in the air for a minute. However, most of us are not professional jugglers but we behave like one each day of our lives. A lot of us have forgotten that work is like a rubber ball. In the same way, broken relationships that have been mended leave scars on the mind. Unfortunately, many of us have swapped rubber balls and glass pieces in our lifestyles. LIFESTYLE

Take time to Re-energise & Evaluate

Back when I was 18 (way back!) I worked as an apprentice at a local manufacturing company. It was my first real taste of employment and what I found most interesting was the many different types of people working there. One man in particular stood out with his unusual habit. He’d work 11 months straight, from January to November and then use up his entire year’s holiday allowance to take the whole of December off. Now the last week or two in November he’d bounce around the yard, smile on his face and a spring in his step. But… The other fifty weeks of the year he was utterly miserable!

missing his annual big break and struggled on. His lack of energy and negative demeanour meant he was overlooked for any and all promotion opportunities, every year was a battle and he couldn’t muster the enthusiasm to reach any real goals in his life. My question to you is what do you have in your diary to look forward to? I recommend at least once every 12 weeks have something substantial that allows you to re-energise, evaluate the last 3 months and look forward to something you want to achieve in the next 3 months. My Wife, daughter and I love to travel, so every 3 months we have a holiday scheduled in.

No break to look forward to and growing more and more tired due to a lack of any breaks or real rest as the year dragged on.

Now of course before building a business we couldn’t afford to do this and your date in the diary doesn’t have to be something expensive.

We all suggested he split up his year like the rest of us but he couldn’t bear the thought of

My first ever goal was to not work a weekend and instead go for a family walk.

14

Scheduling a get together with friends you wished you spent more time with and having a fantastic catch-up… Seeing a music artist that you love live… Have a think and schedule something in right now. You’ll be amazed how much more you can accomplish when you have a sprint and rest mentality as opposed to a long drawn out struggle. Never too far away from a great experience and always something on the horizon to hit the right spot. Give it a try! Catch up next time. To Your Success!

COMMUNITY It is with the greatest sadness that we have to share this news with you. Sadly, we have lost little Alice who passed away on New Year’s Day. She collapsed and was rushed to the Vets where it was decided to allow her to sleep with dignity and no longer in pain. She knew she was safe and she knew that she was loved. Not only by her fosterers but also by the many people whose hearts she has touched since her rescue from that awful roadside. Alice was a fighter but this was one battle too many for her. Sleep tight little lady. So sorry that we were too late to save you. Thank you so much to everyone who gave so generously to help her. It’s reassuring to know that she was warm, fed and had appropriate veterinary care during her last 8 weeks. Your overwhelming generosity enabled us to be there for her when she needed help the most. We would like to create a legacy in her memory - Alice’s Legacy - in order that we can be there for the next poor dog that needs our help. The surplus monies donated for Alice will be kept in a fund for this purpose. Of course, anyone wishing for their donation to be returned, please call the office on 01302 711330 and we can arrange this. We hope that you will agree that it would be wonderful if we could rescue another little dog from danger in memory of Alice. We’re sure that Alice would want another dog to benefit from the forever home that she very nearly had. She was so close. Forever in our memories - Alice xx Moving on to a lighter note, we received over the Christmas period a super donation from the Hagan Group in Castleton of £1000 which will be well spent over the winter months. We struggle in the winter months the amount of extra care needed when the weather takes a turn for the worst is often more than people realise. We rely heavily on donations to help us cope with heating bills and veterinary bills this time of year comes with its own problems. Even most of us as we get older struggle in the cold and it is no different for our dogs, this is why nice warm blankets and radiators are so important. We have received so many fantastic donations of food over the New Year period we won’t need to buy food for the next 6 months, so that is a huge bonus. Big thank you to Kay from Tickhill for a lovely bag of super goodies, also to everyone that has left blankets and towels over the Christmas and New Year period. Your gifts and donations are so appreciated, thank you for your generosity. We have had to alter the date of our spectacular Mayflower Ball, it will now be on the 17th May NOT the 24thMay, we hope you are able to join us for this brilliant event at The Crown hotel Bawtry. photographers will be there to capture the moment. If you need to contact us please call 01302 711330

Best Wishes

Daisy Female 5 Years Oct 2018 Yes No Yes

My previous mum and dad decided that they could no longer live together, The house was sold My dad was starting a new job where he worked away tomorrow and couldn’t take me, Where was I to go ????? There was nowhere else except for Mayflower to do a shuffle round and help me. It was a tight squeeze and a ‘double-up’ for a couple of kitties but a pen was found for me. I wasn’t very happy about the situation that I was in and I’m afraid that I was a grumpy girl for a while but now I’ve settled in and realised that it’s not too bad. All I want is a new home, perhaps with a nice secure garden, as I’ve been used to going outside, and a family to love me again. Not much to ask for is it? In the meantime I’ll just sit here and wait Please don’t make me wait too long.

Rosie Female 2 Years Oct 2018 Possibly Some Yes

My owner is very ill and has had to go into hospital for a long time. Although she loved me very much she had no choice but to find me a new home and asked Mayflower for help. It was a sad day when we had to part and we both cried. I miss my home and my Mum very much but I’m starting to settle in here now. I have previously been mainly a housecat but my mum used to allow me into the garden so I could help her hang the washing or weed the plant pots. I always used to dash back in though as soon as she had finished. Therefore, I may like to explore a secure garden in my new home once I’m settled. All I want is my old life back but that’s not possible so I shall sit here and wait for a new family to come along who will love me just as much as my previous Mum did. Please don’t make me wait too long.

Kilnsey Crag • Connections Exhibition Recent changes in fire regulations have meant that at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery there is now limited use of the first floor galleries unless adaptations are put in place which will cost 10s of thousands of pounds. The museum is taking a practical approach by converting the spaces concerned into safe and useful areas in advance of decanting to the new build just at the top of the street. However, life drawing is no longer running and the popular Art History lectures have moved to The Little Theatre. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery Open Wed to Sunday. Exhibition: until 7 April ‘CONNECTIONS’. An exhibition drawn from the collection of Heritage Doncaster finding fascinating connections between a diverse range of artworks. What connects a portrait of ‘Mundig’, the winner of the 1835 St Leger, a dog called ‘Rover’, and a collection of Wedgewood pottery? ‘Connections’ takes as its starting point the first work to enter the art collection at Doncaster, Sir Frank Lockwood’s ‘A Moment of Triumph’, and through a series of links, some obvious, some surprising, and some downright stupid, (their word not mine) makes connections between around 70 artworks, eventually coming full circle back to the beginning. The exhibition celebrates the random nature of the art collection at Doncaster Museum, which has grown over the years through a mixture of purchases, donations and bequests, and now numbers around 2,000 artworks. Art History Lecture: by Rachel HollandHargreaves, now at the Doncaster’s Little Theatre, King Street (off East Laith Gate). February 22nd 10.30am – 12 GEORGIA O’KEEFFE A look at the work of Georgia Totto O’Keeffe, the American artist best-known for her paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. IN THE GARDEN

¢. ,#(! ¢( &&# -

STARTING YOUR SEEDS When the weather is colder and your hands are itching to get gardening again, starting your seeds indoors is the perfect way to combine comfortable potting with practical growing.

Starting your vegetable seeds indoors isn’t for those of us who are lazy or fair-weather gardeners. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere there are some crops which rely on being cared for indoors before they are subjected to the outdoors. Tomatoes, peppers, melons, lettuce, onions, peas, winter squash and cabbage are great options to get started off from seed. Choose your variety from a local garden centre and store in a cool, dry place (my grandad used to use an old biscuit tin for this) and accumulate some suitable containers for each seed. Egg boxes, yoghurt cartons, or any waxed cardboard can be turned into fabulous little receptacles for a seed. Just make sure that you pop a drainage hole into the bottom of each one. You may already have seed trays which are ready made for the purpose but you need to make sure you have somewhere to put them RIWHQWLPHV KRPH PDGH YHUVLRQV DUH VPDOOHU DQG FDQ ¿ W in little corners or windowsills a little better. When you’ve chosen the best container for your seeds, cover a table in some newspaper to catch any mess, DQG ¿ OO HDFK OLWWOH KROH ZLWK D VHHG VWDUWLQJ PL[ 7KHVH DUH ¿ QH JUDLQHG DQG VKRXOGQœW EH SDFNHG KDUG LQWR the container because the seedling needs to be able WR SXVK WKURXJK LW ZLWKRXW GLI¿ FXOW\ 7KH VRLO EDJV FDQ be purchased from most garden centres but keep an H\H RXW IRU WKH RQHV ZKLFK DUH GHVLJQHG VSHFL¿ FDOO\ for seeds rather than general potting. A tablespoon JHQHUDOO\ ZRUNV TXLWH ZHOO WR ¿ OO XS WKH FRQWDLQHUV ZLWK the soil and with a cup of tea this can normally provide for quite a gentle afternoons activity. 2QFH \RXœYH ¿ OOHG WKH FRQWDLQHUV ZLWK WKH VRLO RI FKRLFH you’ll want to add the seeds. Check the instructions on the packet but generally you’ll be putting one seed into each egg-sized container. Cover the containers with plastic (for ready-made seed WUD\V \RXœOO JHQHUDOO\ ¿ QG WKHVH FRPH ZLWK OLGV DQG WKHQ ¿ QG D ZDUP VSRW WR DOORZ WKH VHHGV WR JHUPLQDWH 7KH soil itself needs to reach the right temperature before most seeds will start to germinate so bear this in mind if you drop the heat in your house during the night over colder spells. You may need to use an airing cupboard with a water tank which tend to retain the heat a little better than a windowsill during the night time. Another good option is the top of a refrigerator. Keep an eye on the seeds and once they have

36

sprouted, remove the plastic to allow the air to start circulating. If you don’t remove the lid you may risk moisture building up around the seedling and cause damping-off. If your seeds are not on a windowsill you’ll need to transfer them to a place where they can get a lot of natural light for as long as possible during the day. This will help the plants grow to their optimum size - tomatoes have a tendency to go leggy if they are planted too early or don’t get enough light. Now if you got rather enthused and have more containers than you know what to do with, make sure you rotate the containers in the space you have available so that they each get as much light as SRVVLEOH $ À XRUHVFHQW OLJKW FDQ DOVR KHOS LI WKH\ DUH positioned about 4 inches above the seedlings. You’ll need to be able to adjust the height of the lights as the seedlings grow. In order to water the seedlings and keep the soil moist, a spray bottle is perfect so that you don’t overdo the watering or damage the delicate plants. Sit the containers on layers of newspaper to catch any drips. You can control the speed of growth with the use of fertiliser - either increase the quantity if you want to speed up the growth (for example, if the warm weather has come in earlier than expected) or simply decrease it to slow the growth down. Keep an eye on the size of the seedlings so that they don’t crowd each other. You can either gently lift a seedling out of its pot with a little spoon, and move it to another planting hole, or simply snip off the weaker plant to give more growing space to the others. Once you’re happy that the seedlings are ready to plant outside, you need to prepare them for the move by giving them a taster of the weather for an hour a day IRU D FRXSOH RI ZHHNV EHIRUH WKH RI¿ FLDO SODQWLQJ -XVW make sure to leave them in a sheltered spot otherwise your hard work may go to waste if you miss a sudden downpour or storm! 7KHUHœV QRWKLQJ PRUH ORYHO\ WKDQ VHHLQJ WKH ¿ UVW VKRZ of life poking its way out of the soil and knowing that you’ve played a part in nature. As well as that, in a few months you’ll be enjoying the fruits of your labour when the little seedlings turn into full blown plants ready for harvesting.

Tickhill & District Lions Huge thank you for all your support during 2018

The Santa Float We are never too old for Santa. He brings a smile to all our faces, young and the ‘not so young’. This year he, his volunteer drivers and collectors had to endure possibly the worst rain storm (Saturday 15th) that any of us can remember. Yet credit to them and to you for your support throughout the Christmas period and especially that horrid night. A huge thank you also to Chris Gravill of Marshalls Volkswagen, Scunthorpe for the loan of the vehicle and to Ian Laycock of ProAktive Ltd for helping with the risk insurance. Now our thoughts turn to 2019. We look forward to supporting people and community groups across Bawtry, Bircotes, Harworth, Loversall, Rossington, Tickhill and Wadworth.

As our school term ended in December, our pupils took home their Christmas cards and calendars that they have crafted and sewn to brighten up not only Christmas, but the new year ahead too. We do allocate a considerable amount of time to the making of calendars and a range of sewing and technology based activities in school, throughout the year. We have always valued the skills and objectives LQYROYHG \HV LW FDQ EH Âż GGO\ IRU OLWWOH Âż QJHUV DQG WKH measuring, checking, following instructions, correcting an error can sometimes test even our older pupils; but they are resilient, they persevere. All good lessons for life, and pride in a job well done once they are completed. I was delighted to hear the comments made recently by Roger Kneebone, Professor of Surgical Education at Imperial College, London. He was lamenting the fact that

I was thrilled to receive a reply and his thanks for the “excellent photographsâ€?. I have included one or two here and am sure that you will agree with his expert opinion. Tickhill Town Council Community Awards Tickhill Town Council’s Community Awards for 2018 were presented at the Mayor’s Reception on January 5th by Caroline Flint MP. Only two of Awards that can be nominated by the public were given this year as no nominations were received for the Alison Award. This latter Award is given to a young resident of Tickhill aged 12 – 25 for any form of personal achievement. There must be candidates out there WKDW Č´ W WKLV ELOO VR SOHDVH JLYH this Award some thought in this coming year and get your nominations in. The Community Award, given to an adult for an outstanding contribution to the community, was presented to Margaret Cannings-Clough. Margaret is no stranger to the residents of Tickhill. What some people might not know is just how hard she has worked for the community. Since becoming Clerk to the Council in 2011, Margaret has been a force for good and measured change, both counciland town-wise. She has had endless patience with always the interests and concerns of residents at heart. She continued to give her all to the job until her retirement just a few months ago. During her time as Clerk, Margaret has attended courses and taken on board new legislation to ensure that the Town Council functions in a true, proper and HÉ? FLHQW PDQQHU DQG KDV YHU\ often worked far more than her scheduled hours. Like others involved, she went through a steep learning curve whilst steering everyone through the Neighbourhood Plan but was rewarded not only with a successful outcome but also with 7LFNKLOO EHFRPLQJ WKH YHU\ Č´ UVW council in the whole of Yorkshire to have such a plan in place. Margaret instigated improvements to the Pavilion in Tithes lane, overseeing the installation of a PXFK LPSURYHG NLWFKHQ Čľ RRU lighting and other facilities. She also set up the Town Council Annual Awards to recognise all that is positive in our community.

For many years she has made sure that children in Tickhill have supervised summer activities to save them from getting bored in the long summer break. It is to everyone’s satisfaction that Margaret will retain a role of Financial Advisor and she will be a stalwart supporter of Maxine (Booker), the new Clerk to the Council. Margaret no doubt will continue to be an enthusiastic and engaging member of the Tickhill community. It goes without saying that she is a worthy and deserving recipient of the Community Award. The Young Person of the Year Award was presented to Jack Cox. Jack is currently in Year 1 at St Mary’s School. He is a happy, sociable little boy with many friends. He loves being at school DQG LV HDJHU WR OHDUQ DQG WR Č´ QG out about the world around him. However, Jack’s life to this point hasn’t always been straightforward. Since birth he has, at times, been a very poorly little boy and has undergone massive lifesaving surgeries. Still today, Jack has to take several medicines a day as well as water, given directly internally, to keep his kidneys functioning. This process can take up to 15 minutes a time but it does not stop Jack. He takes this in his stride, continuing to work while the process is still going on. Sometimes he jumps up and down in his seat at his excitement at being able to read his letters correctly! Sometimes, though, the VLGH HÎ? HFWV RI KLV PHGLFLQHV FDQ make him less bouncy. Jack doesn’t complain or feel sorry for himself. Like any other little boy he wants to get on with life with as little fuss as possible. He loves dashing around with his friends playing ninjas or zombies. Despite his challenging start in life, Jack always has a smile on his face. He is a much loved and valued member of St Mary’s School with a brave and positive

outlook. He very much deserves the Young Person of the Year Award! Well done, Jack! The Mayor’s Award went to John Marsden. Like Margaret, John is no stranger to the people of Tickhill. He was instrumental in setting up Tickhill Together, overseeing the changes in the Library, is active in Tickhill Churches Together and, of course, is Organist and Choirmaster at St Mary’s Church. However, his involvement in St Mary’s goes far further than this – he undertakes a myriad of jobs that only those closely involved will be aware of. On top of this, he is always seen going ‘somewhere’, usually to support ‘someone’ in the community who might be in need of a helping hand. He is a genuine unsung hero who the Mayor wishes to recognise. The winner of the Best Dressed Window Award over the Christmas period went to The Strand. Congratulations to them for adding festive cheer to the town centre. Caroline Flint commented that she has over thirty villages or small towns in her constituency. She recognised the work done by the present Town Council and said that at the heart of such communities there are people out there who strive to make sure local views are known and acted on, and that local people DUH UHZDUGHG IRU HÎ? RUWV 7KHVH Community Awards are one way of doing this. She was delighted to be able to present the Awards again this year. Nominations for all the above Awards can be made at any time during the year but must be submitted by October 31st. Nomination forms can be found in the library, KSM or on the Council’s website. The forms contain all relevant information for submission. The Independent Panel of Judges On behalf of Tickhill Town Council

Police Report Happy New Year I am aware that there has been concerns raised over the levels of crime in the local area recently. In December for the Tickhill /Wadworth/Braithwell/Stainton area there were 64 crimes reported to South Yorkshire Police. There were 2 residential burglaries committed in this period, 1 in Wadworth while occupants were away on holiday. Entry was by forcing the rear door and 1 in Braithwell where an attempt was made in the early hours to remove the lock from the door. 2Î? Our February speaker is the Doncaster historian, Brian Sprakes, an expert in medieval stained glass. Brian has researched and written on this subject throughout the UK, but his talk on the 21st February will concentrate on the history and the glazing of our own St. Mary’s Church, Tickhill. As the Church has some fine medieval glass on the south side, and also Victorian pieces, we look forward to hearing how and when these colourful windows were made.

Tickhill Council wishes to thank all the members of the Community who nominated candidates for these prestigious awards. The final decisions were: Young Person of the Year Award: Jack Cox Community Award: Mrs M. Cannings-Clough for her services to the residents and council as clerk. The Best Dressed Christmas Window award went to: The Strand The Mayor’s Award; This award was given to, Mr John Marsden particularly for his selfless service to the wider community in addition to his already weighty more formal responsibilities. A very well-deserved award. Well done everyone. 2019 and 2020 will continue to be years of challenge yet again for your Council particularly on the financial front where Tickhill Town Council have been and are still facing unprecedented demands on our resources. Regardless of this, and in accordance with wishes of the community as expressed in the Neighbourhood Plan, the car park remains free to use as an important support for our business community. 58

This year Tickhill Town Council are looking to resetting the precept by the rate of inflation plus any additional necessary costs that come to light, which will still be at a level significantly less than any of our neighbouring communities e.g. most notably Rossington and Harworth. Residents will appreciate that this has been achieved, in part, by those years where your Council have bucked the national trends by not passing on any increase at all. Even this level will still have the effect of further diminishing the reserves. At the time of this article going to press the budget meeting has taken place and your precept will be set by the end of January 2019 in accordance with legislation. Tickhill Town Council wish to than everyone who helped support the Council and Community throughout the busy Christmas period especially Tickhill Labour Plant who once again have erected the Christmas tree free of charge. THANK YOU ALL. Meanwhile if you wish to make bookings for the pavilion/ tennis please contact: The Clerk, Maxine Booker 07591179658

January is a month for reflection, review and planning for the next year and beyond. Demand for scouting continues to grow but to service this need we need to grow our adult support. We have very dedicated leaders but they cannot fulfil their roles properly without additional adult backup. All sections – Beavers and Cubs who meet on a Thursday evening and Scouts who meet on a Friday evening would benefit from help on a regular basis. This does not have to be weekly. It can be fortnightly or monthly. Or it could be in the form of specialist input for a badge or maybe even a skill which you might possess and would be willing to pass on to the youngsters in our group. If you feel that you have something to offer, please do not hesitate to contact me via one of the means indicated on the poster.

have at present and repairs to the roof. We also intend to redecorate the interior and renovate the exterior. This obviously entails considerable expenditure but, with the income from the galas both past and present we are able to do this with some confidence. An early note for your diary – the Spring Scout Jumble Sale will be held on March 16th. Hopefully this will give you time to sort out any unwanted items for inclusion in the sale. All goods are welcome but we are not able to handle furniture. This is simply because if it doesn’t sell, disposal of such items is problematic as we cannot store anything for future sales.

Planning is under way for this year’s Tickhill Gala which will take place on July 6th. The income from the gala is used to pay for the upkeep of the Scout and Guide Headquarters. As with all buildings, maintenance is an ongoing task and the headquarters is no different to any other. We have a couple of pressing matters to deal with – replacement of the current lighting to something more reliable than the LED units we

SNOWDROP HEAVEN IN NORTH NOTTINGHAMSHIRE In North Nottinghamshire we are very fortunate to have two outstanding snowdrop gardens, and one lovely early spring garden which also features snowdrops. They have opened their gardens for the National Garden Scheme, a charity which raises money for nursing and caring organisations such as Macmillan Cancer Care, for many years and in February all three gardens are welcoming visitors once again. Sat 16th and Sunday 17th February, 11 – 4 pm. The Beeches, The Avenue, Milton, Newark, NG22 0PW. Opening for the last time after many years of opening for the National Garden Scheme, this garden has a collection of 250 named snowdrops, DORQJ ZLWK KHOOHERUHV DQG HDUO\ GDÎ? The garden also features many planted troughs and a courtyard with collections of spring bulbs and is a delight to explore. A charming garden for snowdrop and garden fans alike. Wheelchair accessible, parking, plants for sale, dog friendly, refreshments served in the church. Sunday 24th February, 12 – 4 pm. Holmes Villa, Holmes Lane, Walkeringham, Gainsborough, DN10 4JP. This garden shows that it is possible to have interest in the winter months and visitors can take home ideas to use in their own gardens. Wheelchair accessible, parking, plants for sale, refreshments.
