Welcome to the June

2015 edition

“The human brain is amazing. It functions 24 hours a day from the time we were born, and only stops when we take an exam!” Exam season is upon us! Schools and colleges up and down the country have been preparing students for the exams that form part of school life from SATs in primary onwards. I have 2 children studying this year, although at the time of writing this my sons AS levels have all already been completed and he has 2 weeks off school ahead of him, much to the disgust of his sister who has barely started her GCSEs and will be spending most of half term in school and has over 2 weeks of exams ahead of her after that, including 3 on one day, which seems particularly harsh! Good luck to all readers who have exams this summer and to their families dealing with keeping them studying, fed and happy! As we move into the summer months there are sure to be plenty of summer fairs, galas, family fun days and outdoor fundraising activities happening across Doncaster in the weeks to come. If you know of any that you would like to see promoted within these pages, then please do let me know or pass my details on to the organisers. Community events are free to advertise, so please take the opportunity to spread the word. The July issue will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th June

Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine.

Best wishes, Paula x

Doncaster Access Free Debt Advice Heritage Walks On Your Doorstep

The head of a successful debt advice service is allaying fears that people will have nowhere to turn after the sudden closure of Doncaster CAB. In the last six years, Doncaster-based DWDT has supported more than 10,000 local people to overcome crippling debt or gain the skills to control their finances long-term. Its chief executive, Marisa Graziano, said the CAB closure did not signal the end of debt relief in Doncaster and DWDT advisors were available five days a week to give expert advice free of charge. “Anxious residents have understandably expressed concerns that they don’t know where to get help or can’t travel to the remaining CAB offices in Mexborough and Thorne,” she commented. “But there is no need to panic or travel long distances when we can support people with financial issues practically on their own doorsteps.” Backed by Big Lottery funding, DWDT advisors meet people in their local communities and will support them as soon as they get in touch. “We are very aware of the scale of personal debt locally and have had a major impact on solving financial crises and money management issues for residents across the entire Doncaster borough. It is vital, however, that people don’t ignore the problem but seek advice as soon as possible. If debt escalates, it has a devastating effect on wellbeing and mental health but finding the right support can make all the difference,” added Marisa. DWDT offers one-to-one, confidential debt counselling and can negotiate with creditors, provide bankruptcy support and give practical advice about budgeting, saving and borrowing. The latest information about benefits, housing, employment and training is also available to clients. To find out more about managing money and relieving debt, please contact DWDT on 01709 866466 or email info@dwdt.org.uk. For details of all DWDT’s services, visit the website at www.dwdt.org.uk T

ROSSINGTON MALE Tickhill Together VOICE CHOIR... ... would love for new members to join us.

Many thanks to all who took part in the Scarecrow Festival. Hundreds of folk took to the streets to view the ingenious creations which were the fifty scarecrows. It was good to have the place buzzing. The concert in the evening rounded off the day very nicely. A similar popular concert will be held in Church on Saturday 19th September, celebrating the long reign of our Queen. Anyone is welcome to join in with the singing - practices are on Fridays in August (7pm) in St Mary’s Church. Any ideas for the programme for different decades since the 50’s please ring 744142. T

We meet each Wednesday in the Ragusa Drive Community Centre on Radburn Road, Rossington at 7.30.p.m. Men and boys from eight to eighty are very welcome and a warm and convivial reception is assured. An interest in singing and enjoyment of social appreciation is more important than actual singing talent. Please come along and listen to our practice, then join in if you wish to. It could be the start of an interesting and stimulating hobby. Please contact Allan Robson on 01302 860623 for more details if necessary. T

community Well, Spring is here, the grass is getting greener the trees are waking and the sun is in the sky. However it is still a little cool so the heating will stay on in our kennels for the evening to keep our residents warm and cosy. The dogs and cats get quite giddy as soon as the sun appears, maybe the start of a new season to hope for their forever home!

Finding a forever home

As well as taking care of the dogs and cats we have also been busy staining benches, splitting plants and re planting, spraying and cleaning flags and generally tiding up after the dark winter months. We were hoping to rent a shop in Worksop but unfortunately it didn’t happen, but we are still looking. So if you would like to add your name to the list of volunteers that can maybe help when we eventually find a shop please let us know. It would be better to make sure we have enough volunteers to man the shop before we embarked on actually finding one. Worksop or any surrounding area would be acceptable, if anyone has an empty shop that they would like to donate to us for a short period initially please let us know We are seeing many dogs and cats coming to us from families that are going through difficult times and can no longer keep their treasured pet. Family breakups, moving into rented accommodation, financial problems, we help when we can, we are full to overflowing but sometimes we have to bend our own rules for people with genuine problems. In the office at the moment is Oscar a beautiful pointer cross and such a lovely boy but frightened of his own shadow. However when he gets to know you he is such a loving dog. As he is nervous it was decided that he should be around people more so he has been upgraded (5 star) to the office where he can have company and people around him most of the day. He is coming on in leaps and bounds. Our lovely old staff y Jess who also lived with our volunteers has at last found a home and has settled in well.

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry.

Tel: 01302 711330

If you would like to support us by completing a direct debit for £2 per month please call us or visit our website bank details are on there. Also a gift in your Will would mean so much to dogs and cats that may need our help and the long term future of the Sanctuary. Please call Jennie on 01302 711330 if you would like any further information on how to do this. These gifts are crucial to our long term future. We are recruiting for a Trainee Kennel Carer age 16/18 No previous experience necessary but must be prepared to work weekends. Please call our Sanctuary 01302 711330 and leave a message or come up and see us in opening hours 1-3 weekdays and 1-4 at weekends. Bring your CV and ask to speak to Jennie.

Unfortunately Little Jack the Jack Russell is still with us, it would be lovely to see him go to his forever home. We have about 8 or 9 long term residents and it is such a shame that they are still spending their days in kennels when they could be having some special time running on a beach or in a wood with new owners to take care of them. So if you are wanting a dog that is a little more mature please don’t walk past them they have a lot of love to give. If you would like to get close to any of our dogs we also have a paddock area that is ideal for just that. We also have some beautiful black kittens that are full of fun, so if you are looking for an older lap cat or a full of fun kitten please come and see us. We have also just recently taken in kittens that were found in a box under a hedge, they are just settling in at the moment and may not as yet be ready for rehoming.

me ow!

If you have any fund raising idea’s with enough bodies to carry them out please let us know. We are only a small group and need more volunteers to fund raise for us. 11th July is our Doncaster Street collection come over and say hello, this is one of our favourite days. 12th July we will be at Tithes Lane Tickhill enjoying our Scrufts Dog Show. There will be a BBQ and cake stalls etc. We will look forward to seeing all of the dogs that we have rehomed with their new owners it is a really magical day. Let’s hope the weather is good to us. We will look forward to seeing you at the Sanctuary or come and say hello on any of our fund raising events. Bye for now

PLANTAR FASCIITIS (fash-ee-itis!) The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue running from the heel to the base of the toes. It supports the arch of the foot, acts as a shock absorber and helps with forward propulsion during walking. Plantar fasciitis is the name we give to pain in the heel, which may extend along the sole of the foot, that is caused by repetitive stress to the plantar fascia. It is usually felt most keenly on taking the first few steps following rest ie first thing in the morning or after prolonged sitting. It is a common condition affecting 1 in 10 of us at some point in our lives and can be a pretty stubborn problem. It will, however, eventually get better with time and treatment can speed up this recovery process. There are several potential causes of plantar fasciitis – being overweight, pregnancy, being ‘on your feet’ all day and poor footwear may all contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis. Stiffness in the ankle and foot may also cause excessive strain on the plantar fascia as may any changes in your usual work or exercise routine. When treating plantar fasciitis, it is often a combination of strategies that works best. Medication and rest can ease your symptoms. Physiotherapy to stretch and mobilise the tight tissue and stiff joints can help tackle the cause of the problem. A Physiotherapist can also advise you on the most appropriate exercises and self management techniques to help manage your problem.

Estfeld School–

Kingswood Centre at Colomendy In early April the Year 6 pupils at Estfeld were fortunate enough to visit the Kingswood Centre at Colomendy, North Wales – a new visit venue for the school. On the outbound journey the party visited the Imperial War Museum North at Manchester. The pupils were interested in the interactive displays and visited the “From Street to Trench” special exhibition, which depicts the changes in the North West following the outbreak of the First World War, and explains how events at the front affected the region. The Colomendy centre is perfect for thrill seekers, and is surrounded by rolling hills and natural woodlands, which are home to a variety of wildlife. During their time at Kingswood our pupils enjoyed climbing and abseiling amongst the treetops, hurtling through the air on the giant zip-wire and walking amongst the woodland canopy on the aerial walkway. It was fortunate that most of them had a good head for heights and enjoyed a challenge. For the more down to earth there was caving, orienteering and archery, whilst others preferred the raft building activity. Throughout the week the pupils needed to work together in pairs or as a team and this was something which they did very well, encouraging each other and congratulating their

friends’ achievements. We were very proud of the pupils; their excellent behaviour and attitude, was commented on by several people during the visit. Throughout the week the pupils took the opportunity to try new experiences. For many the events were outside of their comfort zones, and it took real courage and determination to try something new and challenging. Well done to them all for being resilient and for making the most of the opportunities on offer. In the evenings the pupils relaxed singing songs around the campfire, had fun performing with their friends on the karaoke and rounded off the visit on the final evening with a disco - dancing the night away at Club Kingswood. A great time was had by all – and it didn’t rain once!

St Mary’s School David Lawrence Jones at St Mary’s On Wednesday 15th April, David Lawrence Jones came to our school and told us about his life story, it was very funny. Then on Friday he came back to give us some books and sign them. The school also bought all six of the books, the four Bradley Baker series and two of Jig and Saw books. David had a really weird prop, a bath!! When you step in it, smoke comes out of it and it glows green. By Boyen, Year 3

The author had a brother and a pet turtle. He wrote six books, two books about Jig and Saw and four books about Bradley Baker. David Lawrence Jones told us about the first book of Bradley Baker, it was called “The Curse of Pathylon”. Jack was dressed up as Bradley Baker. The second book was called “Bradley Baker and the Amulet of Silvermoor”. His third book is called “Bradley Baker and The Pyramids of Blood”. The final book is called “The Gullfather of New York”. Tickhill Music Society Fascinating Folk At its recent meeting Tickhill Music Society explored unfamiliar territory with an evening of folk music presented by Martin and Shan Graebe. They treated the audience to a wide range of songs, each one given an entertaining introduction. There were lovers’ songs, drinking songs, nonsense songs, mariners’ songs, and soldiers’ songs – and the audience enthusiastically joined in the refrains. The songs were mostly sung unaccompanied, but for two of them Shan skilfully accompanied herself on the auto harp (a type of zither). The Graebes are not only performers but also authorities on the pioneering collectors of folk songs of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Martin gave a fascinating account of the life of the Rev. Sabine Baring – Gould, better known perhaps as the writer of “Onward Christian Soldiers” but also a keen collector of folk songs, starting in his first parish of Horbury, near Wakefield. In many ways this was a perfect evening – pleasure given in the singing of songs, and musical knowledge pleasantly increased.

Feeding The Ducks on the Mill Dam Following a recent report in the media about the dangers of feeding bread to ducks and wildfowl, I think it’s wise to provide some guidelines so that we can feed our ducks safely. Large amounts of bread can create abnormalities in developing chicks, cause vitamin deficiency in adult birds, and can also damage the habitat. You may have seen ducks with feathers sticking out at the sides. This is a condition called Angel Wing and is caused by over feeding the birds with food which is high in calories but low in vitamins. Bread is one such food and should never be fed to ducks. There are many alternatives to bread which will not only satisfy the nutritional demands of growing birds but will also keep the habitat stable. Below is a list of satisfactory alternatives: Cracked corn Wheat, barley or similar grains Oats (uncooked; rolled or quick) Rice (cooked or uncooked) Milo Birdseed (any type or mix) Grapes (cut in half) Frozen peas or corn (defrosted, no need to cook) Earthworms Mealworms (fresh or dried) Chopped lettuce or other greens or salad mixes Vegetable trimmings or peels (chopped) You can also buy specially made Duck and Goose pellets from agricultural suppliers. Whatever food you decide to take, it is important that you don’t over feed the ducks. Leaving food to rot on the bank or in the water can lead to a habitat problem. If they begin to seem uninterested it’s important to stop feeding. We all grew up feeding the ducks, it’s something we do with our children and our grandchildren, and we can continue to do so, and be pleased with ourselves knowing that our actions are benefiting both the birds and the habitat.

Thank you, Dave T

T Fest 26 September… which is a fortnight after the St Leger. Posters are now up in the local shops… and already a fantastic array of bands are booked to play, this will be a different event from the first one in 2013, it will be much more compact with only two venues in Tickhill hosting the music and many and much more besides. So put it in your diary. Become a sponsor. Snap up your early bird tickets - a snip - a ridiculous snip at £10 a pop. www.t-fest.co.uk Travellers alighting at the train station in Doncaster must be prepared for a serious feeling of disorientation. They will be forgiven for thinking that they have arrived in Manhattan… just look at what has happened at that end of the Frenchgate! Yorkshire Contemporary This is Doncaster’s newest gallery space, showing work by more than a dozen artists living in the Doncaster area, to one of the biggest audiences possible. I have always been a fan of art being in non-gallery places, and the Frenchgate thoroughfare, the route from the station into the shopping centre has to be one of these. This large space has been transformed with an initiative from the curator/ artist Neil Rands aka Rama Ramski ( showing this month in Art at the Deli) and a group of artists from the New Fringe into a lively and exciting space with bright and often large scale works. This large space has a daily audience in the thousands. So a great place for artists to hang their work. https:// yorkshirecontemporary.wordpress.com Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15 Exhibition: Yorkshire Photographic Union until 5th July. Tickhill Horticultural Society

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery Feedback via various routes has told us our articles gave too much information, took too long to read and the text was too small to read, as we try to fit too much onto our page.

The April meeting featured Michael Walker from Scunthorpe with ‘Growing Tomatoes at home@ an experienced grower and speaker providing snippets of sound advice for even those of us who have been growing tomatoes for years, Michael required 3 tables for all his plants and he didn’t take many home. Not requiring a fee, he was excellent value.

The biggest concern re the practice seem to be problems getting an appointment which is unsurprising since it’s a national problem and at present the practice is still short of one GP. Steps are in place to fill the vacancy and locums are being used when available but again there is a shortage.

The following Thursday we had a social evening to make up for the cancellation of the AGM at the end of January due to the worst snow of the winter. Many of our members were suffering withdrawal symptoms from missing their pie and peas, which was put right by some tasty specimens from Paul Eaton. Thanks Paul!

However, more of us would get an appointment if appointments were not wasted. Some of those appointments not attended are booked on the same day that they are not attended!

The evening began with half an hour of songs from St Marys School choir which were enjoyed by everyone. Thank you children for a great start to our social, and special thanks to music teacher, Maggie Evans, Head, Janet Sanderson and the parents who provided support. The evening proceeded with a stand up bingo and a range of little quizzes, interspersed with numerous funny stories from Chairman Ray which want down extremely well. We refused to go home until we had a final couple. With the raffle we normally have at the AGM a big crowd of members enjoyed a very pleasant evening.

(Aiming to help you, to be in control of your health and healthcare.)

Others are booked online and then cancelled on the day of the appointment. (Please note that online bookings are intended for patients who work.) The latest figures for April still speak for themselves:Tickhill Surgery: 98 Colliery Surgery: 78 Please cancel if you cannot attend or no longer need the appointment giving as much notice as possible. The PPG still has the issue of appointments at the top of their agenda. In spite of all the hard work done by Russell to produce Doncaster’s Challenge Fund Bid, the money for this area has gone to Sheffield and so at the moment there is no money to fund change for our practice. We intend to gather information on the new appointments system which we can feed back to all patients such that we can all better understand the issues we all face. You can contact the Patients Group via their email at: tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com. T

Pets Corner – Rabbits Cute, fluffy and inquisitive, a rabbit is not to be considered an easy option for a pet. But if you have a bit of time to learn to understand how rabbits behave you’ll have a fun pet who could be very much part of the family. A rabbits’ environment is incredibly important and they will mark out their territory using chin secretions, droppings and urine. This helps them to feel secure with familiar smells and as in the wild, tamed rabbits should also be allowed to display these behaviours. You need to make sure that there is an area for a rabbit to dig - a child’s sand pit or large plant pot with earth is a great place for a rabbit to play in. Indeed they also get bored quickly so need suitable toys that are rotated regularly to keep their interest. Rabbits can be trained and a bit like dogs respond well to reward based training even to the point that they will use litter trays and collect treats from you. You must never punish or shout at your rabbit though as they are likely to become scared and nervous as they won’t understand. DELIVERED FREE TO OVER 3200 HOMES | www.todaypublications.co.uk

MAKE A PROPERTY

TRUST WILL The

Protect the inheritance for children from previous relationship. Protect up to half of the home value from care fees. Protect your property for the next generation.

Benefit

How do they work? For Property Trust Wills to be effective you must own your property jointly with your partner. Most partners own their home as joint tenants. This means when one dies the home will automatically pass to the survivor. We will alter the ownership from joint tenants to tenants in common. This means you own a distinct share which you can then leave into the Property Trust which grants the surviving spouse a life interest in the home for their lifetime. Should the surviving spouse need to go into a care home then only their share of the home is taken into account not the whole. Should your spouse/ partner remarry

or make a new Will after your death then your share of the home is protected for your beneficiaries. With arranged Care Home costs currently in the region of £600 per week, the cost of £300.00 is a small price to pay for the severance of joint tenancy and Wills. Growth and Maturity Dear Friends, As a person who hails from a warm climate, I love the spring and summer seasons. I love it when the sun shines through my office and brings in the warmth that I had been craving for. I also love it when I can plant flowers and vegetables and see them grow in my garden.

Smalls for All!

Thinking of planting and growth, I am reminded of Jesus’ words in John 12:24 which says, “Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit”. Jesus was reminding his followers that life is not always what we want. Hence, we may feel powerless and vulnerable in some of our experiences. We must realise that in most of these experiences, we cannot always control them no matter how hard we try. The seed must be broken in the soil before growth starts and finally leading to fruits. We must therefore listen to our pain and accept that life is a balance of joy and sorrows. This will help us to grow into maturity, as God wants us to. On the other hand, I wonder if I can also remind friends that accepting the challenge of growth is part of the process but living with it and moving on is sometimes very difficult. Just like a plant growing into maturity, we need to be watered, pruned and fed. These processes will eventually lead to fruiting. I wonder whether you may be encountering some struggles in your life. They could be finances, family issues, work-related issues, retirement issues, bereavement or the loss of a pet or an item, and so on. Sometimes, we cannot mend the issues but we can see the bright side of it and move on to the future. God is encouraging us to depend on him in these times of our lives. He says in Hebrews 13:5, “I will never leave you nor forsake you”. My prayer for you is that God will carry you through your season of growth and maturity so that you may come out a more matured person yielding hundreds and even thousands of fruits that will benefit those you encounter in your life. Have a blessed summer time.

Cherish Dress Agency in Bawtry will once again be collecting used or new bras and new pairs of pants for the charity Smalls for All (www.smallsforall.org) during the month of June to be sent out to Africa. Underwear may seem insignificant when a country has so many problems but because many women and children in Africa can't afford underwear, they fall victim to disease and attack. Girls who are lucky enough to have a place in school often miss 3 or 4 days a month due their lack of underwear. Smalls for All donates underwear in many ways - through links with established charities; through hospitals that treat women with conditions like fistula; through IDP camps and children's homes and orphanages. To date Smalls for All have sent 91,500 items of underwear to Africa. Last year Cherish helped this by collecting 328 pairs of pants and 256 bras. Please help us in seeing if we can overtake this total in 2015. Bring items to Cherish, 54-56 High Street, Bawtry Tues to Sat 10am to 4pm in June. T

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Never too late…

Gardening is an ongoing affair and though timing is important, we often become overwhelmed by a sense of being ‘too late to plant’ by some arbitrary date. Often we bandy dates around as though they were written in stone. My granddad insisted all potatoes and spring beans had to be sown by Good Friday, and the gooseberry bush had to be in leaf before the runner beans were sown. But in fact each season is different and garden planting dates are more flexible than traditional wisdom would have us believe! The good news is that it’s not too late to plant a great garden, even in June and July. While it is true that fruiting plants like tomatoes and peppers really need to be set out now, many other summer producers will grow even more quickly from seeds planted in early summer, when the soil is already well warmed. You’ll be surprised how fast seeds will come up and explode with growth: cucumbers, beans and winter squashes, pumpkins, beets, carrots, chard and scallions, are all suitable for June planting. It’s a great time to start a crop of ‘cut and come again’ salad mix and mild mustards. You can also plant heat-and-sun-loving herbs like basil, marjoram, chives, oregano, thyme and sage. Just keep the seed beds well moistened. 46

TICKHILL TODAY

And even if you were super-efficient and your earlyplanted beans, squash, chard, carrots and basil plants are growing well, June is a terrific time to start a second crop to have ready for a late summer harvest, when the first crops of these staples have finished up. I usually start seeds every month, finishing sowing summer-producing vegetables in late June. In July and August, I move on to seeds for autumn crops like spinach, radishes, kale, leeks, peas, broccoli, more mild mustards and some pak choi. June is not too late for flowers either. I’ve planted marigolds, sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias and nasturtiums at this time of year. That way when the first annuals have burned out by late summer I have a lovely smaller flush of blooms to enjoy. If you really want to get ahead, June and July are also good times to start seeds for perennials and biennials to bloom next spring. Sow seeds in a protected seed bed, and then transplant seedlings in the autumn to overwinter. Next spring you’ll be rewarded handsomely with garden full of glorious colour.

Enjoy your garden.

Things are currently very busy here at Move and Inspire Me, as we have been preparing for our demonstration at The Tickhill Big Lunch, we hope you didn’t miss us. Look out for us at other summer events going on in the local area. We have had a couple of spaces become available in the following class: DanceFit with Toning, Friday 9.30am –Bawtry Parish Hall. To book your space, call our Manager Sally now on 07885 229209. Most Dance classes focus on correct style and technique and whilst the Move and Inspire Me programme embraces dance styles from all over the world, and the playlist consists of your favourite music from all eras from around the world, the class is not technique focused. This is because if the instructor stops to show the break down of the steps, the fitness benefits of the class are compromised because your heart rate necessarily slows down. The playlist is designed to raise the heart rate to just the right level at just the right time. This is based on interval training techniques so the songs will have a beat speed corresponding to heart rate requirements within the class structure. You do not need to worry about getting the steps exactly right. Just keep moving! Don't forget to keep an eye on our website www.moveandinspire. me.uk for all the news, we are currently looking into new Yoga, DanceFit light and Zumba classes. To ensure you get a new class near you at a time that suits you, please spare us 2 minutes of your time and follow the link on our website to our quick online survey to be in with a chance of winning one of our great prizes kindly donated by some of our fantastic local businesses in Tickhill. “Open house” for Open Door Over 75 people from across the region have celebrated the success of local property business Open Door at the official opening of its new office in South Wheatley during May. An independent, family-run property company, Open Door has invested in transforming an old rural farm building. Its new home, a previously-derelict cartshed, has been turned into a state-of-the-art office. The sustainable property, located equidistant between Retford and Gainsborough, is powered by solar energy and heated using some of the latest eco-friendly technology. Open Door was originally founded in July 2012 by Graeme Naish (26) during the back-end of the recession, working from his parents’ dining room. He subsequently sat and passed trade exams with the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers (NAVA) before moving to the Retford Enterprise Centre and selling the company’s first residential property in November 2012. Since then, Open Door has hosted more than 20 auctions and sold homes worth more than £30 million to local residents. It has also extended the scope of its services: in the last 12 months, it has hosted an additional auction in Sheffield as well as launched a traditional, flat-fee estate agency called Open Door Sales. Open Door’s open house was hosted at the new offices and attended by customers, partners and representatives of local businesses community. Open Door’s Director Graeme Naish, said: “The move to the new premises and this event marks a huge milestone in the development and evolution of the business. We’re delighted that so many of our supporters could attend tonight and mark this occasion with us.”

Claire is already known in many places around the world having earned a fabulous reputa on as a world class musician performing her live show with her big band orchestra to sell-out audiences.

The Chief Executive of local enterprise partnership D2N2, David Ralph, officially opened the office and said a few words in support of Open Door: “I’m pleased to formally open the new home for Open Door in this lovely rural setting and it is great to see an old building restored and brought back into full use. Open Door is a fine example of a thriving young business – who are essential to help grow the local economy in our region.”

Featuring songs by Alicia Keys, Adele, Dusty Springfield and some amazing virtuoso piano arrangements this is a show not to be missed.

Artists Take Over the Rossington Labour Club Building on a successful 2013 Art Take Over, Rossington based artists Caroline and Adam Ogden, in collaboration with seven artists have brought a poignant exhibition titled ‘What’s Left?’ exploring the legacy of the South Yorkshire Mining industry to South Yorkshire. The exhibition features, painting, drawing, photography and sculpture and will be available to see at the Club until 5th June. Thanks to the generosity of the Labour Club the events are free and anyone will be welcome to attend. Martin Pick comments: “It offers a real opportunity for contemporary art lovers and those with an interest in social history to meet share ideas and build creative collaborations.” The ‘What’s Left?’ exhibition includes work produced during the 1984 miners strike, work produced in the post strike period and most recently during 2013 and 2014. People effected by the strike, both old and young, have been interviewed and their comments collected and presented as unattributed “quotations” throughout the exhibition. The interviewees are ex-miners, police officers who served during the strike, miners wives, friends and family and perhaps most importantly young people who have grown up with its legacy. Participating artists who are all members of Doncaster’s New Fringe are: Steve Bates, Adam Berry, Rachel Horne, Adam Ogden, Madeline Pick, Martin Pick, Cheryll Kinsley Potter and Evan Wood. The New Fringe is an inclusive Doncaster based arts group. With 150 active members it exists to provide support and encouragement as individuals develop their talent and artistic practice. Its approach is to encourage artists to ‘do it for themselves’ with other members of the group providing support if needed. Anyone serious about the arts and developing the arts scene in Doncaster is welcome to join the New Fringe, it’s easy to do online and costs only £5 per year: http://doncasternewfringe.wordpress.com Rossington Labour Club Gattison Lane, Rossington, DN11 0NR, 01302 868491 T

Tickhill and District

Local History Society

At our April meeting Albert Smith talked about the History of Mystery including details of some well known (and not so well known) magicians of bygone days. This was followed by a more lively period of audience participation. Thank you Albert for introducing us to a more unusual aspect of history.

We had a successful exhibition at the Doncaster and District Heritage Association’s annual fair on Saturday16th May. Many thanks to Lesley Nicholson and Roger Ranson for organising and manning our stand; also for showing off the Society’s activities to a wider audience.

Our latest Occasional Paper Tickhill in the Second World War has been published as the sequel to Tickhill in the First World War, both written by Carol Hill as part of the work for her most successful book Tickhill - discover its past. Because there was too much detail and too many illustrations for the book, these publications are welcome additions to our Occasional Papers’ series. In particular the new Paper looks at the ways local people contributed to the war effort from joining civil defence and hosting army contingents, to many fund raising projects. The Paper, price £2, is on sale at KSM.

Our trip to Hodsock Priory on 18th June is now fully sold out with a waiting list. Demand has been so heavy that we may see if it is possible to organise a second visit next year.

Finally, Mr and Mrs Moss will open the Castle between 2.00 and 4.00 pm on Sunday 14th June. This is not a History Society event but because the Castle played such a prominent role in Tickhill’s history for many centuries it seems worthy of a mention here.

and runners up, a big thank you to them for their donation. There will also be a tennis and bowls tournament for those who wish to take part.

2 Pinfold Lane Tickhill DN11 9NS 01302 743317

Tickhill Town Council would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the four members of the Council who retired at the last Elections, Mr D. Hoyle, Mr S. Millard, Mr P. Rigley and Mr D. Adgar, with a combined total of over 64years of service. They will be missed. Tickhill Town Council would also like to thank the Borough Councillors Mrs B. Hoyle and Mr R. Ford for their service to the Community. Both have stepped down, and the current Borough Councillor J. Hart and new Borough Councillor A. Smith will be the Borough Councillors for Tickhill, Wadworth and District. Tickhill Town Council welcomes two new members to the Council Mr J. Hoare who has worked tirelessly on the Neighbourhood Plan and Mrs L. Mayes who has served the community through Tickhill Together. Two other members will be Co-opted as soon as the legalities have been addressed. Hopefully this editorial will arrive on your door step in time to remind you of the “Big Lunch” that is taking place on 31st May 2015, Tithes Lane Recreation Ground and Pavilion. This is a FREE event. There will be no tombola stores etc and no money will exchange hands other than to buy an ice cream on the blistering hot day that I have ordered. Please bring your picnics, Gazebos, blankets and families and have a free day out. There will be no food served. Please bring your own. The organisers have great hopes for this event and would like all of you to attend who possibly can. The event has been centred on the Eden Project and will bring the community together. It is hoped it will help to combat loneliness and give everyone the opportunity to show case their group. Fortunately, funding has been secured that will help provide some teas and coffees, and thanks for this are to be extended to the post office service, Blakemore Foundation for this kind donation. There will be the Punch and Judy man, A brass band, welly wanging and sports events for the children. The Tickhill and District Lions Group have donated the medals for the Winners

The music licences are in place so we can go ahead with all fitness dancing and fortunately the community received funding last year for a PA system which can be used for other events. First aid kits are in place and 4 members of the community have been trained and will be on hand for any minor mishaps! The event starts at midday and will end at approx 5pm. We have Insurance in place but please DO NOT bring Barbeques. If you do the Insurance will not be valid, and you may be asked to leave. We have portable toilets organised so please use them. It will take the pressure off the Pavilion loos. On other matters, could I ask you all to start thinking about nominations for the Young Person of the Year Award, the Community Award and also the Alison Award please? We are already half way through the year. The Diversionary Activities will run during the summer holidays but unfortunately there will be no assistance from D.M.B.C. at this present time. I personally now have an Enhanced D.B.S. certificate and will be able to supervise activities. Tickhill Town Council is still trying to achieve the loan of the equipment but it’s not looking like they will be lucky. Therefore Tickhill Town Council will need Volunteers from Mums and Dads, Carers and Grannies and Granddads to make the event a success and drink tea and coffee! Donations for tea/squash fund always welcome. On to more serious matters: Tickhill has a problem with irresponsible dog owners/walkers not clearing up after pets. It really isn’t very nice. Please clear it up. Also parking: If you have a drive please use it and do not park on the pavements, they are for pedestrians. Team members at the pavilion are Jamie (Supervisor and bookings clerk tel. 07591179658) Andrea and Joanne caretakers. Bookings are high at the present time so please if you require a party, contact Jamie as soon as possible.

Tickhill and District Lions Club Following a very successful period in March and April when all 65 of our Giant Easter Eggs were raffled off by a variety of outlets around the district, a Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Rossington Officials Club President Peter Muir and a member of his bar team Jade Ferguson who was instrumental in raffling off six of the Eggs – an excellent effort. Last months report highlighted the work of Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) providing finance and practical help whenever tragedies occur around the world, and since then the reserves of cash contributed by Lions Clubs have been utilised in providing fresh water purification units to stricken areas of Nepal, almost before the dust had settled, and certainly before many countries had started to raise funding. Locally we donated £450 last month to the Phoenix Explorer Scouts towards the purchase of suitable tents and rucksacks for overnight stops during treks and challenges which form part of the qualification for Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. On Friday 26th June we are holding a “Summer Bash 2015” in a marquee behind the Scarbrough Arms, featuring live music, good food and real ales served in a private bar. An evening for music lovers not to miss. Tickets will be available at Fenton’s Butchers, Juicy Fruits, The Carpenters Arms and The Scarbrough Arms, costing £20 with all proceeds to be donated to the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. Tables for 10 may be reserved through The Scarbrough Arms. Chapman Physiotherapy Massages the Day Away for Blind Mums Connect It’s not every day you get the opportunity to meet inspiring individuals who manage to overcome life’s challenges and set themselves the toughest of goals. Bawtry based, Rebecca Brightmore of Blind Mums Connect is that person. Vicky Chapman, owner of Chapman Physiotherapy met Rebecca who trains at Bawtry Gym, and after hearing about Rebecca’s amazing efforts to raise money for the organisation through her marathon running, offered Chapman Physiotherapy’s help. “We were delighted to be able to offer a day of Sports Massages with Carol Fulton our new Sports Masseuse, and donate all the proceeds to the Blind Mums Connect Organisation” said Vicky. “It’s a fantastic support group that offers much needed help to blind mums across the country”. Blind Mums Connect is an organisation, set up by blind mums, to support visually impaired mothers across the UK. Providing information and peer support.
