June already and the summer months are upon us. Exam season is in full swing and you can find a summer fair, gala or other outdoor event to go to most weekends. You will find details of many such events on these pages. Following the success of our Jess Glynne and Rita Ora ticket giveaways, this month we have a pair of tickets for Madness performing after racing at Doncaster Racecourse this summer. Look out for the Giveaway details in the magazine for your chance to enter. I thought it was about time I updated my photo here in the magazine – people have been starting to notice that the previous image taken quite a few years ago was just a little out of date! Thank you very much to Di Fisher at The Photo Den for offering everyone present at a recent networking meeting the opportunity to have a new headshot taken. Di is an experienced Business Photographer, who also offers Photo Walks, Workshops and social events for those keen to improve their photography skills. Visit www.photoden.biz to find out more. The July issue will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 14th June. Don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine.

Best wishes,

A WILDER

YORKSHIRE

Our Wednesday 5th June Meeting will be a lecture on

T

A good natural environment is important for the wellbeing and prosperity of all residents in the Doncaster region. For more than 70 years domestic and EU laws have aimed to sustain a wildlife rich natural world. In spite of this, the 2016 State of Nature report showed that 56% of species had declined across the UK between 1970 and 2013. In July 2018, the Prime Minister announced that the Government would introduce an Environmental Bill to underpin its 25 year environmental plan. It hopes to ' leave the environment on a better state than it found it'. All Wildlife Trusts, including Yorkshire welcome this recognition that new laws are needed to slow and reverse the decline of wildlife. The Wildlife Trusts, along with other organisations form the Greener UK Coalition. Together they are campaigning for a new Environmental Bill to benefit nature and our own health, wellbeing and prosperity. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust manages Potteric Carr Nature Reserve in Balby. Recently, staff and volunteers met Dame Rosie Winterton MP to discuss working towards any new Environmental Bill. If you are interested in promoting wildlife and enjoying nature you can visit Potteric Carr, Mallard Way, DN4 8DB which is open daily from 9an to 5pm. If you would like more information about the Wilder Yorkshire campaign you can find details on the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust website.

‘ANTONY GORMLEY: A BODY OF WORK' Antony Gormley’s career spans nearly 40 years, during which time he has made sculpture that explores the relationship of the human body to space, often using his own body as his starting point. His work has been shown throughout the world, in galleries including the Tate in London and the Hermitage in St Petersburg, but is also often on open display, as public art, such as Another Place at Crosby Beach, near Liverpool (see photo). As well as works that he is well known for, like the iconic Angel of the North, this lecture will look at some of his earlier and less well-known works, to give an overall view of the development of his work across his whole career, up to the present time. The following meeting of the Arts Society Dukeries is on Wednesday 3rd July and will explore the masterpieces of the Mauritshuis in the Hague Art Gallery. The group meet at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton in Lindrick S81 9AP. The doors will open at 10 am and the lecture is from 11 am to 12 noon approximately. Visitors are very welcome to come along at a cost of £6 per lecture. There is free car parking. For further details about the Society or its lecture programme please contact Suzanne on 01909 290488 or Gill on 01909 540506 or see our website www.theartssociety.org/Dukeries.

AN AFTERNOON WITH IMELDA STAUNTON T Tickhill Writers wish to thank all who made the afternoon such a success. The audience were so enthusiastic and the questions kept coming which Imelda really appreciated. She was even requested to sing a song, and after a few seconds came out with ‘Why walk when you can fly?’ by Mary Chapin Carpenter. Almost £1,500 was raised in aid of St Mary's Church Tower Fund and The Methodist Church's current Charity, The Alzheimer's Society. It was

a real Community event. The Library volunteers helped with the ticket sales, and local businesses contributed goods or vouchers to the raffle which raised £150. They were Castlegate DIY, The Castlegate Corner Card Shop, Cherry Lane, Eatons and Fentons Butchers, Flower Hill, Juicy Fruits, The Deli (Lesley Cox), Spar (Blakemore Foundation), Taylors, and Torne Valley, and also all the individuals who donated prizes, made a cake or offered services.

FLYING FINGERS

A piano recital at Tickhill Music Society always attracts a good audience, and the recent performance by the young French pianist Emmanuel Despax was no exception. Parisian by birth, but resident in England from a young age, he presented a programme of monumental works from the 19thcentury, starting with “Prélude, Choral et Fugue” by César Franck. This is a challenging piece, written by an organist for the piano, and requiring the performer to execute a great deal of work with left hand crossed over right. Despite resembling a test piece, this was carried off with apparent ease. The Franck was followed by a piece in similar mould by Franz Liszt, “Après une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata”. A torrent of notes was navigated effortlessly, and the contrasting quiet passages were treated delicately. The second half was occupied by a single work, Schubert’s B flat Sonata, composed a month or two before his death. This was more familiar territory for the audience, and presented a safe haven after the storms of the first half. Emmanuel played with calm mastery and received deserving applause for a commanding performance.

We recently enjoyed our 3rd Annual Club Presentation Evening, celebrating our swimmers’ success and the collective success of the Club. All swimmers received recognition for their contribution to the Club over the past 12 months, and extra recognition goes to the following swimmers who received trophies in their age categories, and Coaches Special awards. It was great to see the swimmers and their families, and the Coaches and Club members all coming together for a social event, which was enjoyed by all. A great surprise for the entire Club was also received on the night in the form of £300 funding from Bassetlaw District Council Community Grant which was announced to us that evening by our guest of honour, Councillor June Evans. That was truly wonderful news and we look forward to putting these funds to good use. Thanks must also be extended to Tickhill & District Lions who assisted with the logistics of the event, and thanks also to the team of volunteers who organised the event. The Club continues to go from strength to strength: more swimmers achieving County and Regional times, more swimmers becoming very close to achieving County times, and with 3 galas and the Club time trials over the course of the next few weeks, there certainly is no time to stand still. If you are interested in competitive swimming for your child (Stage 7 upwards) so that they can improve their techniques, progress in swimming and compete at Club and County events, you can contact us at bircotesswimclub@gmail.com T

FIRST NEW

SWIMMING POOL

in a generation is celebrating its 1st Successful year! T

Swimstars and Dolphins opened the doors to their brand-new boutique Swim School last year. Sara Pegden and Sue Fynney, mother and daughter who ventured into Swimstars and Dolphins in the year 2000 have transformed the way children learn to swim with their own unique progressive swim scheme which is highly recommended by families. The pool opened within Marrtree Industrial Estate in Wheatley, Doncaster in April 2018. After an initial battle for planning permission the pool has gone from strength to strength with hundreds of children attending and learning to swim every week. The custom built pool has provided a space where families, children and schools can enjoy the exclusive use of the swimming facility making it a more personal and friendly experience. This is one of the many reasons why over 30 Primary Schools in the surrounding area are now using Swimstars to deliver lessons as part of their swimming provision. Other activities such as Aquafit also take place at the pool. Following the success of Quest Parks first year a site is already earmarked in BAWTRY with the plans to develop another model due to high demand. Sara Pegden, the director of the business believes they have a unique plan that has already proven itself to be successful and can be replicated with Swimstars main aim in mind – ‘Enabling more children to take part’ Sue said: “This year has been everything we envisaged and more. It is so uplifting to see families and children attending our pool week in week out with smiling faces. This is the start of great things for Swimstars and we can only thank everyone for their continued support and for following us on this journey” You can follow them on facebook – Swimstars and Dolphins Swim Schools

KITCHEN MAKEOVERS BEYOND YOUR WILDEST DREAMS! Now celebrating its first anniversary, Dream Doors based at Unit 4 Mill Street Shopping Centre in Armthorpe offers kitchen makeovers and redesigns at less than half the cost of a full kitchen refit. Owned and managed by husband and wife team Jerry and Emma Innesbeer, along with the Showroom Manager – Abi Sheppard, Dream Doors has gained an impeccable reputation for transforming old and tired looking kitchens by simply replacing and upgrading the constituent parts. This has proved to be a more cost-effective option compared with ripping the entire kitchen out and starting from scratch. Using the highest quality materials with ‘in vogue’ colours such as cashmere, grey and copper, kitchens can be metamorphosed into stunning and contemporary designs. Cupboards, drawer fronts, worktops, taps, floor tiles and appliances can all be exchanged and even moved to create bespoke kitchens to suit individual tastes and preferences. Quartz overlays are very much sought after nowadays, proving to be a very practical and money saving option. “The kitchen is probably the most important room in the whole house” said Jerry. “At Dream Doors we can install a fresh new kitchen within 48 hours, replacing the doors and worksurfaces for a fraction of the cost of a full re-fit. Kitchen makeovers are popular all over the UK and I’m delighted to say that our modern and welcoming Armthorpe showroom has become a flagship one for the Dream Doors franchise. A ‘Checkatrade’ rating of 9.81 from 32 reviews certainly reinforces our high standing”. Jerry and Abi pride themselves on offering the highest professional

18

standards of personal service. Abi runs the showroom and undertakes the initial customer consultation, whilst Jerry project manages every job from home visit and original design to final installation. They also benefit from having the back up and support of a national organisation, which knows the industry inside out. “The interest in kitchen makeovers shows no sign of abating” said Abi. “People want lovely kitchens they can be proud of, but do not want the cost and hassle of a full re-fit. We offer a wide range of styles, as well as many appliances and white goods, so are able to offer customers a memorable kitchen from a simple door swap, to a full replacement kitchen. Our highlyexperienced fitting team can cope with any job – however big or small!” As well as kitchen makeovers, Dream Doors can also transform any bedroom to suit individual needs and requirements. LIFESTYLE

“Why am I always tired?” I noticed that question is the 4th most asked on Google beginning with the word “why”.

Sure you can scrape by on less, but you increase your chances of many illnesses and the number one way to stop feeling like you need more sleep, is to get more sleep!

When you consider all the possible questions we could ask, it shows just how large a problem a lack of energy is for a large chunk of the population.

2 – Nutrition – Unhealthy diet means an unhealthy gut which creates discomfort and disturbs our sleep as well as sucks out energy.

Isn’t that such a shame, isn’t that such a waste?!

Cut back on the things you know you should be consuming less of and ensure you get your 5 a day of fruit/veg as well as sufficient water to make some immediate impact.

We get around 70 (ish) years on the planet (hopefully) and instead of enthusiastically seeking our potential the majority drag themselves through their “best” years. So let’s take a look about some basics you can take control of today to increase your energy and inject more enthusiasm into your life. 1 – Common sense is often the least common action, so let’s start there… get some sleep! Sure, there are times in your life when burning the candle at both ends is unavoidable, the arrival of a baby into your life for example. But these should be temporary and every single respectable sleep expert agrees that human beings require 7-8 hours unbroken sleep to function at their best. The late night channel hopping and web browsing is not pouring anything useful into our lives, so cut that out and set a more suitable bedtime.

22

3 – Exercise/Activity – Being active increases energy, decreases stress, elevates mood and releases chemicals in our body that allow better rest. Pick an activity you enjoy, is suitable for your fitness level and start to reap the rewards within a matter of weeks, sometimes days. 4 – Life Plan – The above 3 improvements can make a big impact for sure. But even with those ticked off your list, nothing saps your energy like a long-standing problem hanging over you. Lack of finances, relationship problems, anxiety, stress from work, lack of goals to strive for…these all consume our thoughts, suck out our energy and steal our enthusiasm. So let’s get practical. What is the biggest issue on your mind right now that is causing you to feel uneasy, restless of stressed?

What is the first step you could take today to begin solving this? It could be creating a plan to progress or change your career, perhaps an important conversation with someone you’ve been meaning to have, maybe seek guidance from a financial planner, go to the doctors with a medical issue you’ve been ignoring. Only you know what it is and chances are the more you resist seeking the solution, the more you need it. Imagine yourself a month from now. Getting enough deep sleep, eating better, more active, solutions for the major problems in your life found, working towards goals that inspire you and feeling re-energised, focused, fit, healthy! It’s a happy thought isn’t it and it can absolutely become a reality, but only if you choose to make it that way by taking action, the sooner the better. As always, go create a day and life that counts, have more desires that excuses.

SIMPLE RUNNING TIPS • Training without a plan can be demoralising. If you have a target in mind, then a plan will give you weekly targets that you tick off as you progress. Make your target realistic and achievable and set times frames to keep you focused.

Premier ON Running retailer in the North with an unrivalled range of ON running shoes on display in our shop We also stock a wide range of running kit COME AND SEE US FOR EXPERT ADVICE AND FRIENDLY SERVICE!

www.blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk

• Stick to it. Don’t be tempted to do more than the plan suggests just because you are feeling good. The plan will have been put together to ensure you improve slowly but steadily in a safe manner.

Barry Shaw House, Shrewsbury Road Bircotes, DN11 8DE

• Don’t be tempted to do too much initially. While your early enthusiasm might make you feel like you want to get into your training in a big way from day one, make sure you go with what your plan tells you. Too much too soon can to lead to injury.

Designed for those in mid-life or later years OR if you’re looking for a gentler approach. Regular class every Wednesday at 10am From 12th June new 6 week courses begin again: Beginners course 12th June 6.15pm Yoga for deep relaxation 12th June: 7.30pm Call Shona on 07904 262877 E-mail: shona@yogaover45.co.uk Visit: www.yogaover45.co.uk

• Don’t lose sight of your goal! Don’t let bad days affect your overall programme. One of the best pieces of advice is to be consistent! • Build your training into a regular routine. Keep a set time for your training to ensure you do it. However, having a routine does not mean doing the same distance session all the time, as if you do that you won’t make any progress. • Keep reviewing your training diary as often it is easier to see what is working and what isn’t when we review it.

TICKHILL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY T Despite the occasional downpours, a large attendance gathered in the Tickhill Methodist Church schoolroom at the end of April to hear David Logan give a presentation to the Tickhill Horticultural Society on the history and the work done in the gardens at Doddington Hall, near Lincoln. David told us that he left his job as Head Gardener at Doddington Hall a fortnight earlier, and brought along Jordan, his successor, with him to gain some experience. David gave a very interesting and entertaining presentation: it was fascinating to see pictures of the gardens today and compare them with photos of over a hundred years ago – and even further back, with some drawings taken in the early days of the Hall, which was built in Elizabethan times. While a little artistic licence is suspected in those drawings, the wisdom of planting large trees close to the Hall was clearly shown in photographs! Most wisely, the family decided about fifty years ago that the trees had to go to show the Hall off to anyone approaching. The changing fashions and tastes of the owners were clear to see, even though the ownership has remained in the same family ever since it was built, with just a few changes of surnames (due to marriage) along the way. Bookings for the forthcoming trip to RHS Harlow Carr on Sunday, 7th July were taken at the meeting, and there were only half a dozen places remaining on the coach by the end of the evening – so if anyone is interested, you need to decide quickly! The Tickhill Gala is due to take place on the previous

26

day (Saturday 6th July), and members were asked if they will bring along any spare plants they may have to be sold on our stall at the Gala. The next meeting is due to be held on Thursday, 30th May when David Newman will be speaking on various aspects of plant propagation. Looking further ahead, Michael Myers of Harrogate will be talking about the “Favourite Gardens of Yorkshire” on 27th June. Non-members are welcome to

attend any of the Horticultural Society’s meetings throughout the year at just £3, although you may wish to consider membership for the rest of the year, which is only £8. Just turn up at our meetings, which are on the last Thursday of each month, and have a very enjoyable evening, all with a gardening theme. Meetings are held in the Tickhill Methodist Church’s school room and start at 7.15pm and end about 9pm.

Hello Everyone, I hope when everyone is reading this the sun has decided to visit us, our dogs hate the rain, and we all feel so much better when the sun shines.

LOTTIE

We are all looking forward to the Mayflower Ball and hope that we raise lots of money, as well as having an amazing time with everyone that bought tickets to join us on the evening. We now have an appeal for a beautiful little dog that I have been helping to take care of. She is so sweet and only hope that the surgery planned is able to go ahead and is successful. If you can help by donating even a small amount that would be amazing. We need a phenomenal amount of money to help her. Please read on. Lottie’s Appeal. Soon after arriving with us, Lottie’s carers noticed large growths inside both of her ears. During further investigations by the vets, they could see that the growths are completely blocking her ear canals, leaving her in great pain and unable to hear.

Blue Male 10 Mths May 2019 Possibly Possibly Older

Blue has had to come into Mayflower’s care as his owner was allergic to him and he was making her asthma worse. He is new in and finding life a little hard at the moment. As a previous housecat its very scary here with all the new smells and sounds but, given time, he will soon come round. All he needs is time and patience and this little chap will blossom. He would prefer his new home to be indoors and quiet with patient owners who will allow him to settle without pressure. Although he has been a housecat so far he is young enough possibly enjoy exploring a secure garden in his new home. He hasn’t lived with another cat but initial introductions have been positive so fingers crossed that he will find a feline friend to get up to mischief with ! He hasn’t met any dogs so we are unsure how he will react. Please don’t pass him by – stop and get to know him.

We will never know how long she has been suffering like this, but we do know that with your support we will do our very best to make sure it won’t be for much longer. Lottie has already started on much needed pain relief to help her feel more comfortable and she is travelling to see a specialist. The operation alone to remove the growths has been quoted at around £4,500 and that’s not including the consultations fees or any medication that may be needed. Purse strings are already stretched near to breaking but we can’t let this lovely girl suffer like this. Please support us as we get her out of pain and let her hear, maybe for the first time. If you would like to help towards Lottie’s operation you can do so by one of the following options. Cash or a cheque can be handed into reception, a cheque in the post to Narrow Lane, Bawtry, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN10 6QJ or donations can be sent by PayPal info@mayflowersanctuary.co.uk Please make a note with donations to Lottie Appeal. Even a small amount would make such a difference towards Lottie’s care. Many thanks for reading this. We will look forward to seeing you soon. Best Wishes

Hunter has come into our care as his previous owner was moving and unable to take him with her. He has lived in a flat since he was a kitten and at 12 years old we feel that he is too old now to adjust to going outside. Therefore he must remain safely indoors in his new home. Hunter found life here very difficult at first and hid under his blanket for days. Gradually, as his confidence grew, he started to creep out to see what was going on. He is now confident enough to sit on his scratchpost watching the world go by although he can still be spooked easily. Once he gets to know you, he’s a fussy little chap and can be quite vocal around dinner time. All he needs is time and patience and this little chap will blossom. He would prefer his new home to be indoors and quiet with patient owners who will allow him to settle without pressure. He has previously lived with another cat but hasn’t been confident enough to make any feline friends yet. Please don’t pass him by – stop and get to know him.

Tickhill Estfeld School Y3 Visit to

Creswell Crags

Recently our Year 3 class were fortunate enough to visit Creswell Crags, to learn more about the mysteries of life in Stone Age in Britain. The pupils spent a fascinating day learning about and re-enacting life in the Stone Age. The class walked in the footsteps of the Ice Age hunter and entered a world of fire and flint. They visited one of the caves to learn all about the how hard life could be for our ancestors, hunting for food and finding shelter in extreme conditions. They were able to see and handle some of the flints and tools that were in the museum and saw evidence of the sabre-toothed cats, hyenas, mammoths and rhinoceros that would have roamed the area over 40,000 years ago.

44

But life in the Stone Age wasn’t all hard work and hunting. The children also learned about how the people of the time entertained themselves by making music, and enjoyed making music themselves with instruments that would have been typical of the time. The children also enjoyed seeing examples of the cave art for which Creswell is famous, and produced some fine examples of cave art themselves, using techniques that the ancient artists would have used to make their masterpieces. The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Creswell and had great fun – the best way to learn!

TICKHILL ST MARY’S YEAR 2 CLAREL CLASS VISIT TO THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY SERVICES MUSEUM As part of their launch activity for the topic “The Great Fire of London” the Year 2 class visited The National Emergency Services Museum in Sheffield. The children thoroughly enjoyed seeing the old fire engines, police cars and ambulances. They marvelled at how fire engines have evolved over the years becoming more efficient and fit for purpose. Many of the children loved going into the vehicles, trying on the emergency services uniforms and ringing all the alarms and sirens. The children had a fantastic day at the museum and it was a very informative day. The museum has a rich history and is set in a unique Victorian combined Police, Fire and Ambulance station on West Bar, opposite the Law Courts of Sheffield City Centre. The building is said to be over 120 years old and, previously used as a Police and Fire Station. Many years ago, the shared Station had a layout, which allocated the Police on the

left side of the ground floor. This included 4 cells, 12 stables, an office, an interview room, the inspector’s office and an enquiries desk. This area is now the museum’s reception. The building itself saw service through both World Wars and survived the Sheffield Blitz, however, fragments of shrapnel and scars can still be found in the front brickwork of the building. Allegedly, paranormal activity can witnessed within the building during the night and it has featured on the popular television programme “The Most Haunted”.

Y6 BIOLOGY LESSON As part of our new topic on humans and other animals, Y6 are learning to identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. To help us with our learning we investigated pig hearts. With the help of Niamh, a trainee vet, we identified the various parts of the heart using all the correct vocabulary! Niamh then showed us how to dissect the heart so we could investigate further and discover how the heart functions. “It was very smelly but really interesting” was a comment from Olly. “I can remember it and understand it more now” said Isobel

Our May meeting took place at our new venue at Castle Close Community Centre on Thursday, 2nd May when final arrangements were made for a visit to the Phoenix Theatre at Bawtry to see 'Relatively Speaking' on Tuesday, 14th May - it was agreed that three members of the Out and About Group would provide the necessary transport to take everyone there by car. Plans were also agreed to visit the Yorkshire Sculpture Park on the 4th June as this had proved to be such an enjoyable visit last year and Pam Goodchild agreed to look into our means of transport. Next meeting to be held on Thursday, 4th July,2019 at Castle Close Community Centre.

According to the office of National Statistics, U.K. the overall employment rate is 76.1% between ages 16-64 years; (January 2019). But according to the survey by the London Business School and Finance 47% of the UK workforce will like to make a career change, 66% of Millennials (people aged 16-34) want to change career and 23% of all UK workers regrets current career. The root-cause identified in our analysis was the lack of information on career choices or progression. A lot of people rushed into their career and even got more confused on how to progress further. We have designed a career enhancement program that will actively engage and support people in making better career choices: Our objectives are to: • Actively engage with people to assess their career needs. • Help more of Doncaster’s young people find the right academic and vocational routes for the careers they aspire to.

• Supporting adults in a deadend job find their way out/ to career progression.

T

We have already launched our virtual training platform where we teach valuable skills like time management, Microsoft application package, database management, software testing, business analysis and project management. Through collaboration with other supportive groups we will provide young people in Doncaster a clear advice and guidance on career choices regardless of their dreams or ambition. We will provide a platform that provides live chat with professionals; available to answer questions in real time. Through seminars and workshops we help young people find the right academic and vocational routes for the careers. We also support adults by providing information on continuous professional development, skills trainings and CV reviews. Knowledge Pool is an initiative of the Redeemed Christian Church of God; RCCG Kingdom Life Convocation, Bawtry, Doncaster. For more information please contact admin@rccgklc.co.uk or 07427 262448.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES 2019 T

Tickhill Town Council in association with D.M.B.C. are pleased to announce that the summer children’s activities will be going ahead, as before, this year. The location will be at the Pavilion and they will be run from 1.00pm -3.00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fortunately, a grant has been received from “Spar” who will be providing, for those that need it, a light lunch, which will be served from 12.30pm. It will be in the form of a sandwich and drink. Other light refreshment will be available throughout the activities, i.e. squash and/or biscuits and fruit. These activities are put on for the benefit of families and we desperately need volunteers to help supervise and make the copious amounts of squash for the children and cups of tea/coffee for the adults. Please note the activities cannot go ahead if the conditions are inclement and could be cancelled at the last minute. It is hoped, Richard Marshall will be made available to us by D.M.B.C., to help provide football and cricketing activities. If anyone from Tickhill Juniors football is available to do a bit of coaching/overseeing this would release Richard to do his cricket coaching, for which he is qualified. Please do not hesitate to come forward. I am hopeful that we will be able to provide rounders too. The normal consent forms will be required to be completed before any child joins in, all children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. These forms will be available at each session. A register of those attending will be kept, and all information gathered will be destroyed when the events come to a close at the end of August. The consent form to be completed will also be made available on the website www.tickhilltowncouncil. co.uk Nigel Cannings has offered to do community litter picks for families during the summer, please contact him through the advertised way found under the Council information at the rear of this publication. Funding has already been received from Tesco bags of help to purchase community equipment, please come forward as families as this activity cannot go ahead unsupervised but all equipment will be provided.

Spring Beer Festival

Last month’s Beer Festival at the Scarborough Arms, Tickhill was a great success dispite the weather trying to put a dampener on it. Our thanks to all who attended and especially to landlord Steve Walters for his help in organising the event and for the generous donation. During the event “FLASH” a close up magician was in action amazing young and old alike. A lot of people were putting there drinking abilities to good use raising money to help others.

Look out for August Bank Holiday

Tickhill

. . . but not TODAY

Tickhill and District After our hilarious March speaker, we had a complete change of mood for our April meeting. Cath and Clive Richardson from Hull told the story of ‘The Woman who didn’t exist.’ Something that could never happen today, when computers keep records of us all, but after World War I it was possible to change your name and move across country and disappear completely. The story also highlighted how hard it was for the wives of World War I soldiers. The miner who died fighting for his country left a wife and three children, they were then evicted from their tied miners cottage, as he would not be coming home to resume his job as a miner. This was a talk which made us realise how much things have improved in the last 100 years.

Local History Society

Our annual outing will take place on 12th September when we visit Salford Quays. This area is fantastic for its retail outlet, restaurants, the Imperial War Museum of the North, the Lowry Museum and Ordsall Hall, a beautiful National Trust Elizabethan Manor House which is only a 14 minute walk away. Media City is not far away for anyone wanting the Coronation Street tour. The coach will leave from outside the Methodist Church at 9.00am. and we expect to leave Salford Quays at 4.00pm. The cost is £15 and tickets can be purchased in the library.

well no wonder, it gives us so much to talk about. Hottest Easter, coldest May Bank Holiday, wettest first week in May. What about the next Bank Holiday – will it be the most windy ever/driest ever – hopefully not the most snow ever! Sadly there is NOTHING we can do about it, just hope that our events are either indoors or blessed by the good weather god. Thankfully if you have booked your event in the Parish Room it doesn’t matter what the weather is doing.

Our ‘normal’ regular events are: MONDAY !NEW! Probus meetings from 11.30 p.m. – 1 p.m. (10th and 24th June) Evenings, Ukulele Group TUESDAY Spanish for children during the day and Yoga in the evening WEDNESDAY Sounds Phonics in the morning, WI, first of the month, early afternoon, Francophiles – first of the month, evenings. Tickhill Film Society, third and fourth of the month, evenings THURSDAYS AND FRIDAYS Are currently available for your own booking/event/celebration/class!! SATURDAY 10 – 12 our own Parish Room Coffee Morning to raise funds for the running of the Parish Room SUNDAYS Currently available for your own booking. Tickhill Film Society have been showing films in the Parish Room since Spring 2016, entertaining us with films ranging from popular

British titles to the latest Oscar nominees – 36 so far – including “What we did on our Holidays”, “The Hundred Foot Journey”, “The Lady in the Van”, “Loving Vincent”, “The Greatest Showman”, “Darkest Hour” and “Finding Your Feet”. The Society will be back in the Autumn of 2019, showing films on the third Wednesday of the month, with doors opening at 6.30 p.m. and films starting at 7 p.m. Members are invited to pay a subscription for a season of films at £4.50 per film. Guests will be welcome to attend at £6 per film. Over the last few weeks we have also hosted Quiz Nights, a Breast Cancer Coffee Morning, Valuations (jewellery, coins, etc) Scarecrow Day, a couple of Big Birthdays a Wedding Anniversary or two and a Christening (I want to add ‘and a Partridge in a Pear Tree’ too – but that would be a lie!). Watch out for a lovely event on Saturday 13th July. Treat yourself to an Afternoon Tea in the Parish Room, raising funds for Breast Cancer Care. Tickets will be on sale in and around Tickhill, in various shops and venues (including the Parish Room). More news to follow on price, availability, etc., in the July issue of Tickhill Today. Posters will be out soon! Make a note in your diary now - this promises to be a sell out and tickets will be limited. If you think the Parish Room could be your venue of choice – whatever the weather – please ring me for details. Our building is both small and beautiful, our facilities are excellent and our rates are very competitive. For further details on any of the above events, please ring me on 07840 419763.
