Hot on your heels….

Just over a month ago the dreaded Achilles heel was on everyone’s lips as it ended David Beckham’s hopes of competing in what would surely be his final World Cup. Suffering an Achilles rupture, Beckham is ruled out of play for 3 months as he rehabilitates the injury. So, what predisposes someone to Achilles rupture? The Achilles is the largest tendon in the body. Withstanding loads of up to 12 times body weight, the Achilles is the strongest and most powerful tendon, yet incorrect footwear, poor training techniques, and muscle imbalances all contribute to its downfall. Achilles pain should never be over-looked. It is important to seek advice early as symptoms can be easily treated and a rupture may be prevented. Achilles tendinopathy is common in middle-aged athletes and those increasing their activity levels dramatically. Symptoms to look out for include stiffness within the tendon following activity, progressing to soreness first thing in the morning and a gradual onset of activity limiting pain. Treatment may include ice, anti-inflammatories, ultrasound and physiotherapy. Locating the cause of the problem is key to resolution.

The Benefits of Exercise during Pregnancy By Bawtry Health & Fitness Studio

Louise from Tickhill asks: ‘How do I exercise during pregnancy?’ Regular, gentle exercise can be a great help during your pregnancy and the fitter you are the better you'll be at coping with the demands of a new born baby. Stretching and toning exercises such as Yoga and Pilates can help keep your body flexible and ready for labour. Plus, anything that gets your heart going is good for you and your baby's health as it pumps oxygen, blood and vital nutrients more efficiently around the body and to the womb. Unless you've been advised by your GP or midwife not to do any activity then it's a good idea to do something you enjoy. Of course, you have to be sensible and not push yourself too hard and keep away from those contact sports! Need running advice? www.metrestomiles.co.uk Tel 01427 872323 Need a Physio? Tickhill St Mary’s C of E Primary and Nursery School

Keep Tickhill Tidy Tickhill Together have been promoting keeping our lovely village clean and tidy. The children at St Mary’s were asked to produce some posters that will be put up around the village as part of the campaign to act as a reminder not to drop litter and clean up after dogs. The winner was Lucy Baker who received an Easter egg donated by the mayor’s wife and the nine runners up received a cream egg each. Well done to everyone for some imaginative and colourful designs! Extended schools – Multi skilled Martial Arts Extended schools provide the children with an opportunity to try an activity they may not otherwise experience, as well as providing them with some fun exercise. For the last couple of years Andy Crittenden, a master instructor with 22 years experience, has been coming in to school to do multi skilled martial arts with the children. This improves their self confidence, self discipline, fitness and concentration as well as teaching them to work as a team. Andy has his own martial arts centre and for more information call 01302 858335. Katarina Martin, School Secretary Tickhill St Mary’s

TICKHILL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION ROBIN HOOD AIRPORT Clare Wilson, Environment and Community Manager, for Robin Hood Airport, spoke about the development of the airport at our March meeting. The civil airport opened in April 2005, with a terminal designed to accommodate over 3m. passengers and capable of expansion in the future. Currently about 1m. passengers use the airport each year. Doncaster is a major transport hub, with about 1.75m people living within a 45-minute drive from the airport and a half-hour bus ride from Doncaster Station. An Aviation Academy has now been established on the site and one hanger is used as a ‘one stop aviation shop’ for forms of maintenance. There is considerable potential for the development of air freight. Clare told us that noise is the major area of complaints. Their ‘quiet operations policy’ aims to have as much movement north to and from the airport as possible as less people are affected but weather conditions determine the route taken. They are currently seeking a relaxation of night flying restrictions to assist freight movements. Routes should be confined within a 3km band, so aircraft should fly between Tickhill and Harworth, rather than directly over either settlement. Airlines are rather a fragile economy and do abandon routes at short notice. However, the airport is negotiating for new routes all the time and hopes to have long-haul destinations in 2012. An interesting discussion followed. These are some of the points which emerged:  Road traffic is not an issue with residents; local roads at present can easily cope with airport traffic.  Noise is a concern, especially at night; there are fears that this will build up and we would like the airport to take a firmer line with those who break its code (which apparently only applies to outgoing flights)  Almost all flights currently take tourists out of Britain; the airport is working with businesses in the Sheffield area in an effort to find ways to accommodate and develop business travel.  Pollution from aircraft (as from other forms of transport) raises health concerns. Clare presented a positive picture and the Robin Hood Airport Masterplan is an ambitious document but I think we all realized that there are many uncertainties in the years ahead. REMINDER – Please look at our advertisement for the excellent entertainment to be provided by the Sheffield Concert Band at the Institute on Saturday 22 May from 7.30 to 10.00 p.m., tickets £5 from June Havenhand (telephone 743392) John Hoare

This month there’s also a note of congratulations for one of our members, Lion Don Bullock who has now been a member of Tickhill & District Lions for 25 years! By now there must be literally hundreds if not thousands of people out there who have benefitted from the hard work you’ve Choirs of Sir Thomas Wharton School put in. So on their behalf, thanks for all your & Dinnington School hard work so far Don. Another thank you this month for all our guests who attended our Sportsmen’s dinner at Doncaster Golf Club on the 14th of April. It was a fundraising event to be proud of, even if we do say so ourselves. Our guest star speaker ex-England cricketer and England Test Selector Geoff Miller, was superb, and lived up to all our high expectations. And even our very own President Phil Thomas couldn’t out do comedian Josh Daniels, but it wasn’t from a lack of trying! Pictured is a giant Easter Egg being presented to Bluebell Wood Hospice by President of Tickhill & District Lions, Phil Thomas.

The Egg had been raffled at Rossington Top Club, raising £108 for Lions Welfare Funds, and the winner Lennie Robb donated it back to the Lions Club with a request that it was given to children. Many thanks to Lennie, another fantastic gesture from the membership of the Top Club.

Elvira makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles's marriage to his second wife, Ruth (played by Rebecca Fowler), who cannot see or hear the ghost. The seven strong cast is completed by Natalie Young in the role of Edith, Tony Abbott as Doctor Bradman, and Liz Atkinson as Mrs Bradman. Performances start at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available from the SPAR on Station Rd, Bawtry, priced £7 (£6 for concessions) and £12 for the buffet evening performance on Saturday 22nd.

Our Customers regularly ask "Why does Taylor's own Cooked Ham taste so good?" The Answer: We only select the leanest Gammon Joints. Each Ham is then cooked slowly for at least 6 hours in its own juices, until the core temperature reaches 85 degrees. The meat is then rapidly chilled in its cooking juices and only dressed for sale just before it is required. The reward for this long process........... Is in the eating. Tickhill Today

TICKHILL BROWNIES Taking Brownies away for a weekend is always planned with excitement and approached with some trepidation. To keep eighteen girls, occupied, well fed, and happy for a weekend, without them being aware they are being organised is no mean feat. The ‘file’ is never far from my side for some months before we go, making sure all the relevant paperwork is filled in and approved, consent and health forms from the girls, approval from Girlguiding NE that all the adults going are CRB checked and able to go. But on the fun side, preparing a program of activities, working out what badges the girls will achieve, and planning a menu they can help to prepare as well as eat, more than makes up for the formalities. This time, due to a shortage of time, we bought our food online, we were given a slot of two hours and I must admit one hour into that slot, I was wondering if the van was going to arrive at what is essentially a hut in the middle of a wood, but they did, and everything arrived that we had ordered. Another lesson learned by me, and a service I will certainly use in the future. We were blessed with marvellous weather, another bonus, and we spent a lot of time outside, we had a barbeque on Saturday and the girls were introduced to ‘Mars bar bananas’, they look disgusting, but taste fantastic, and are definitely a Scouting/Guiding experience. We ate outside and enjoyed our own campfire sing-song. We were treated to a show on Saturday night with the girls singing songs in their pyjamas, before their hot chocolate and bed time story. By 3.30pm on Sunday everyone was packed and ready to go. They go home without a backward glance, and I wonder, did they enjoy themselves? But I am always informed by parents that most of them are asleep before they get to the M1 on the way home, a sure sign that they had a good time. My thanks go to Mo and to Wendy who spent most of the weekend in the kitchen, to Katy who introduced me to Tesco online, and did most of the work on the activities, and to Lynsey and Samantha who acted as big sisters to the girls. A Brownie pack holiday can sometimes feel like hard work, but who am I kidding? I think I enjoy it more than the girls, so my best thanks go to the Brownies who make it possible. If you would like to help with Brownies, please contact me. Clare Carr 07780 703012 50| Tickhill Today

TWO VIEWS. The first glossy magazine to pop through my letterbox some time ago was EASTSIDE published by the Regional Magazine Co. More recently this has been joined by PROFILE published by South Yorkshire Newspapers and the quarterly SOCIETY published by Society Lifestyle and Leisure. All these magazines are very stylish productions. They are printed on fine art paper and are delivered free. They use attractive typography for lively articles illustrated with colour pictures by some talented photographers. The front covers very often feature glamorous women models who, in the established tradition of our freewheeling society, are not always fully clothed! These are all unashamedly advertising publications, and the adverts must be expensive to cover the quality production costs and free delivery. They must be aimed at the top, monied people of society rather than old geezers like me. There is a strong slant towards women, with a lot on clothes, fashion, beauty treatments, slimming, weddings, modern kitchens and bathrooms. Eating out features prominently and places of interest in the area are promoted. Holidays get an airing at the right time of year; places like the Seychelles, Dubai and the Grand Canyon. The men are not forgotten but the cars promoted are often expensive; I’ve seen a snip of a Jaguar at £30,000 and a Maserati of Italian chic at almost £100,000. These magazines paint a positive, thriving and prosperous image of Doncaster, probably designed to encourage optimistic, spend your money and feel-good aspirations. There is also a quite different picture. In a national newspaper recently I read of a movement to have the name of the town changed to Danum in an attempt to mask the less savoury reputation that Doncaster has earned for itself. After only a short period in post yet another top Council executive has resigned (with a handsome handout, of course). There has been a meltdown in Social Services following alarming deaths of children on the high risk register. There has been outrage and strong national scrutiny after horrific attacks by two small boys in Edlington. There is a high teenage pregnancy rate. Doncaster has been labelled by the Government as an anti-social hot spot. Internal Council wranglings do not inspire confidence. These two very opposite views are the extremes. Fortunately there are also the in-betweeners. the ordinary middle of the road folk who work hard for a modest living, look after an ailing relative, encourage and foster the development of their children and help with voluntary activities. They spend a bit, save a bit, help each other a bit, live decent unspectacular lives without getting their names in the papers, finances in debt or kids in police custody. And perhaps they dream a little of better things. Society would be a whole lot poorer without them. Philip Mottram

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary

Spring is well and truly with us and the sanctuary is bursting with colour. All the buds are out on the trees and the daffodils are looking pretty. Isn't it amazing when everything looks so different when the sun shines. Even the dogs look happier. We have recently had a member of the public bring an 8 month old puppy to us with very abnormal front legs which she is unable to walk on for more than a few steps. She is a beautiful girl called Belle. We are in the process of asking specialist vets to look at her and confirm whether anything can be done to help this lovely puppy. We will update you with this story next month. You will be able to see photos of her on the website shortly. We are in desperate need of more funds for the charity in order that we can help more dogs like Belle. Vets bills are always a constant worry and we will be making a special appeal for donations specifically for her. Last month I talked about Zena the Rotti who came to us when her 9 puppies were 1 day old. Well they are doing really well and she is a brilliant mum even though she is a young dog herself. We have been lucky enough to have a lady come forward to volunteer at our shop in Manton for 2/3 days this means that we can be open for most of the week which is a real bonus. So a big thank you and we hope you enjoy volunteering for us. A big thank you too for the other ladies that have kept the shop running throughout the winter months. Our fund raising events calendar is overflowing at the moment, so again we are looking for volunteers to help. Whether it is on stalls at some events, or rattling buckets on street corners, or if you are a good organiser maybe you could get even more involved. One fund raiser which we all love is the Mayflower Sanctuary Summer Ball which takes place at The Olde Bell Hotel, Barnby Moor, on the 19th June tickets are ÂŁ35 each, its a fabulous venue with 4 course dinner and dancing and disco. Trax fm will be there too. Not forgetting the auction, there are some really wonderful prizes. Why not come along and support us we need to capitalise on this particular event and make it a night to remember. If you would like tickets please call me on 07840203688 I will be happy to reserve them for you. Another event that must not be missed is The Staff Force Charity Day at Hayfield Lakes Finningley on the 6th June. This is a brilliant day out and will be supporting not only our Sanctuary but Help for Heroes and Phase Worldwide Charity. There will be a fishing match that will go on throughout the day, we will be organising a fun dog show. There is also football coaching for all you budding Beckhams. Vintage car show and side stalls. There will be special guests from the British Army / Ghurkhas and the Army logistic team will be there setting up equipment on site for public viewing. Please come along for a good day out and join in the fun, all for a good cause. (don't forget to bring your dogs along and enter them into the dog show ) There are numerous beautiful cats and dogs in our Sanctuary waiting for their forever loving homes. If you are looking for a pet please either call us or come for a look around our Sanctuary, we will be happy to help you make the right choice. You can take a dog into our paddock to establish if you and your chosen dog get along. We will then carry out a home visit to check that your fence is of the correct height, and that you have chosen a suitable dog for your life style .We will look forward to seeing you soon. If anyone would like any further information on our Sanctuary please visit our website www.mayflowersanctuary.com or call 01302711330 or 07840203688 we will be happy to help

Helen Ashton Appeal Thank you Millstone Pub As one of our regular and loyal supporters yet again the Millstone public House has come up trumps. In the Bar they have created a bookcase for customers to select from and hopefully bring back and resell excellent quality books for Helen’s Appeal for a small donation . Hopefully customers will support the Millstone by buying the books and raising money to find a cure to beat cancer . One of the generous gestures they also make is a meal voucher to the value of £100 each year to auction at the annual Winter Ball and thanks to the Richardsons who manage to outbid everyone each year lots of money has been raised due to their generosity! Helens Winter Ball We have a winter ball again this year at the Mount Pleasant Hotel Bawtry on the evening of the 3rd of December book early as tables go fast! Time to glam up and have some fun its a great evening of good food ,good company and entertainment for the price of £50 inc 3 course meal, drink on arrival and wine with your meal. As some of my loyal stall customers will see the sun is out and so is the stall , stop and have a look don't be shy every penny counts and makes a big difference . Thank you for all of your support in keeping Helens appeal going and being so successful.

Tickhill Scouts I’m very pleased to report that the heating system in the Scout and Guide HQ is now working again. I would like to thank all those users who kept faith with us and put up with barely adequate temporary heating throughout the cold weather. One lesson we have learnt is not to have your heating system serviced in winter. We should have known that the system would be condemned during one of the coldest winters for a long time. Never mind, the repair, which was going to be mind numbingly expensive, was considerably less costly once the contractor had fully examined the complete system. We can now consider further improvements to the headquarters. This will start with repainting internally. The Community Payback Team that provides a labour force from young offenders will do the work. All we need to do is provide materials. The whole Scout Group attended the annual St George’s Day Parade in Doncaster on April 25th. It makes me smile to hear that not enough is made of St George’s Day by England. Over the past 40 years that I have been involved in Scouting and probably a considerable number of years before, the Scout Movement has celebrated St George as its patron saint. This has been marked by local and national parades of scouting members held throughout the whole country. The flag of St George has been proudly flown and many thousands of young people have gathered together in churches, community centres, sports grounds or campsites to celebrate the day and re-affirm their promise and law. We now hear that there is a desire to create an obligation for young people to do compulsory voluntary work. Not quite sure how voluntary and compulsory can be applied in the same sentance – but then again I am not a politician. Now there is a move to encourage all adults to volunteer!! Good luck to those out of touch politicians who write such drivel. If it were so easy to get adult volunteers, organisations such as Scouting, Boys Brigade, Guiding, and any other organisation that depends on voluntary help would not be struggling to exist currently. There are plenty of youngsters wanting to join such organisations but without the adult support then it cannot happen. Talking of which, we would dearly like to double the size of our Beaver Colony and increase the frequency of meeting but we need some more adults who are prepared to put in the time and effort to make this a reality. If you think you can help please let me know – you will not be on your own and you will be fulfilling the wishes of every political party – don’t let that put you off – we will still be here when everyone has forgotten the sound bites of the upcoming election. Tickhill Town Council Newsletter It is disappointing to have to report that the proposed meeting with Borough Councillor Walker, Cabinet Member for “Highways” at DMBC to discuss Drainage/ Highways matters had to be postponed this week. A new date has still to be arranged. Most Councillors attended a formal briefing session and inspection at Robin Hood Airport earlier in the month and were impressed with the facilities they were shown – many of which are not normally available to members of the public.

.

Fly–tipping remains a problem in the area and has the full attention of the Neighbourhood Management team. The team have seen through the completion of the improved children’s play area at St Mary’s Road, organised the “Get Walking” initiative last month and have continued the scheduled community litter picks this month. They have also been involved in the production of a new system at the Mill Dam for operation of the sluice gate. Councillors have agreed that the Union Flag will in future be flown on National Armed Forces Day (26th June this year). It was felt appropriate that this be a simple gesture of thanks and recognition of the work done by them There has been a very good response to the “Tree Appeal” and, so far, approximately £3000 of the £4400 cost to the Council has been donated. Councillors are very appreciative of these generous gifts, which have all been acknowledged. Of course it will be a few years before the trees are planted, when there will be a formal reception and a dedication stone planted showing the names of all the donors. Looking back at my previous notes on this subject, I apologise to the Ward Councillors for neglecting to publicise their agreement to the transfer of funds which they had originally provided three years ago (when it was thought that they might be spent on the Mill Field) as the balance of the funds required for tree purchase. Tickhill and District Local History Society Meetings. Our archive evening in March proved a great success, so much so, that we have decided to hold another one, displaying a much wider range of material in May next year. Thanks are due to Bassetlaw Museum, Doncaster Archives and Brian Elliot Books who contributed to the displays, also to Lesley Nicholson and her team who co-ordinated the event and the ladies who provided refreshments throughout the evening. In April Roy Taylor gave a fascinating talk entitled a “A Taylor’s Tale” in which he skilfully wove together the threads of Tickhill’s development in the 20 th century, his own family history and the growth of the family grocery business in the Market Place since it opened in 1946. He showed many of the original hand written accounts, bills from suppliers and other interesting documents. Roy donated his fee to the “Making a Difference” campaign currently being run by Taylors in support of local groups. Visits. We have two summer evening visits organised. On June 10th we are going by coach to Gainsborough Old Hall. Cost will be £13 per head inclusive a (rather late!) cream tea. On July 8th we are going, also by coach, to Mrs Smith’s cottage at Navenby with an optional Pie and Peas supper at the Millstone on our return. Cost will be £11 without the supper or £16.50 with. For both visits you must have booked at or before our meeting on May 20 th. If you are not able to be at that meeting ring Dorothy Bradley on 752429 or David Walters on 742918 to make a booking. Next meeting. On Thursday 20th May, Rosemary Preece will talk on “A woman’s role in the mining industry”. The meeting will as usual be in the Methodist Schoolroom and will start at 7.30PM.
