Welcome to the

November 2016 edition

“It is not happy people who are thankful, it is thankful people who are happy” I know that we don’t celebrate thanksgiving in the UK but this quote still seemed appropriate for our November introduction! Being grateful for what you have is such an easy way to be happy. You may not have as much as someone else (let’s face it, we can’t all be Kardashians — and honestly, would you really want to be?), but once you really look at the things in your life that you value; perhaps it’s your health, your family, your friends — you’ll realise that riches don’t always come in the form of money. By making a point of focussing on all the good already present in our lives we cultivate positivity and increase our happiness. This issue sees the start of some Christmas mentions. Where has 2016 gone? I can’t believe that Christmas is already on its way. Maybe it is an indication of my age that years some to fl y by so much quicker than they used to! The December issues will be delivered to you late November. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th November. This is of course the Christmas issue and it is always a jam packed issue, full of annual events, Christmas fairs and celebrations. Please do ensure that you do get your times to me in good time if you have something you would like included. Enjoy November and I will be back in a months’ time with your December magazine.

One of the most important things that we can give to help a young child’s development is time, gentle encouragement and our full attention. Our team of fully qualified Nursery Nurses know when all a child wants is for you to listen to what they are telling you. In a busy world where everyone is rushing to fit everything in it’s important that you know that when you leave your child in our care we have staff ratios that allow us to give individual time to each and every child. Promoting a healthy diet is always in the news. We provide balanced, home cooked, healthy meals so you don’t have to worry about diet. Listening to our parents preferences is one of our primary goals. Recently we have almost completely abolished processed sauces from our meals so that all our dishes are made from fresh ingredients. Children also learn to serve themselves with self service snack times to promote independence. We pride ourselves on knowing all of our parents/carers. When you come to the Nursery you’ll find a friendly face opening the door to greet you ready to tell you all about your child’s day. Getting to know you is important to us too. If you’d like any information about the nursery call us on 01302 742629. Take a look at our new website www.wilsicnursery.com and especially at our Parent Testimonials page! Personal recommendation is everything and you’ll see why we are so well thought of by our parents.

Tickhill Together celebrate 10 years. It was in November 2006 that Sharon Copley, the then owner of Hopscotch on Castlegate, had the idea of our shops opening late on a Thursday evening. So there was mulled wine and mince pies, carol singing and a lovely atmosphere as hundreds of folk came well wrapped up on a chilly evening. The organising group soon called themselves Tickhill 7RJHWKHU EHFDXVH WKH QDPH VHHPHG WR ȴ W RXU aim of promoting our community, its businesses organisations and groups. Over the years a succession of events has been introduced- several of them the suggestion of PHPEHUV RI RXU FRPPXQLW\ 2XU ȴ UVW 6FDUHFURZ Festival was a rip roaring success with unusual characters lurking round many corners. This year’s festival coincided with the Tour de Yorkshire when lots of knitters created bunting which festooned our village - this has since been made into blankets and some will be displayed in the library in early November. Over the last year we have celebrated two milestones in our Queens life with concerts involving many people. We hosted a meeting about the car parking situation. This year we organised a 40’s Day when people dressed up in the period, and music, HQWHUWDLQPHQW DQG IRRG ZDV HQMR\HG E\ DOO ORRN RXW IRU GHWDLOV RI QH[W \HDUȇV HYHQW RQ 6DWXUGD\ WK -XQH

And so now we come to November 2016 when our late night Shopping Event will be held on Thursday 24th. The Big Switch on will as usual be at 6pm. The children of our schools will be singing, the Country Market will be in the Methodist Schoolroom, there will be refreshments in several venues, the shops will have special promotions and children’s rides will be in Castle Close to name but a few of the attractions. A free programme giving all details will be available from KSM and Castlegate DIY during November. Come along and make this your event. If you have an idea for a future event or would like to be involved with the organisation of our programme please be in touch with KSM Card Shop or give me a ring on 744142 John Marsden 8

r health and healthcare.) (Aiming to help you, to be in control of you Dementia Friends A big thank you to Judith Barton for attending The ‘Flu Clinic’ held on September 24th 2016 at The Tickhill Surgery and to those patients, who having spoken to her, signed up for the next Dementia Friends Sessions. These sessions aim to help us understand how dementia in its various forms affects people and how support can be given. Anyone else interested in attending a session should contact Judith on 01302 751276 or jmd.bart51@gmail.com Appointments not attended The Local Health Authority sends out appointments for babies to attend the practice for routine vaccinations. Last month in afternoon clinic sessions for these routine vaccinations, 13 appointments were not attended and not cancelled.

Equally important are minor surgery appointments, for which the waiting list is long. It is therefore important that patients should attend or let the surgery know they will not be attending such that someone else can benefit from that appointment. Zero Tolerance The Practice has asked us to inform patients that both surgery premises will now actively support the Government’s NHS ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY. Reminder If you have not yet received your vaccination against ‘flu’ please make an appointment if you qualify for the vaccine. The PPG (Patients Group) can be contacted via email at tickhillandcollieryppg@ yahoo.com or in writing via the comments box in either reception area. We look forward to hearing from you.

St Mary’s School Harvest Festival, Doncaster Museum and Pedestrian Training Year 4 Laughton It has been a very busy and exciting half term for Year 4 at Tickhill St Mary’s. We started the term with a visit to Doncaster Museum, where we spent the day as archaeologists. It was interesting to take part in the “We Dig the Vikings” workshop at the museum, this was a launch to our new topic Vicious Vikings and Smashing Saxons. Year 4 had the amazing opportunity to investigate the origins of various artefacts from the Viking and Anglo Saxon era. Part of the workshop included a coprolite investigation which we initially found very disgusting however, this provided us lots of useful information about the Vikings and Anglo Saxon diet. It was also a relief to find out that the coprolite that we were handling and extracting was actually salt dough! Laughton class also had the opportunity to explore the museum and learn about the history of Doncaster and the United Kingdom. Many of the children were impressed to see a Victoria Cross and learn about the courage and extreme devotion that is required to be awarded one. Chloe said “I learnt more about the Vikings than ever before and I would love to go again.” Chloe added “I would definitely recommend it to a friend and I can’t wait for another fun day like this!” Above: Chloe and Harry carrying out the coprolite investigation. Laughton Class were also very pleased to welcome Sara AppleyardSmith from Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council (DMBC) into their classroom. Sara spoke to the children about road safety and went out with groups of children into the streets of Tickhill. Whilst out on the streets, the children did pedestrian training and learnt all about the different road signs and how to be safe when walking around. All the children were awarded with bright yellow wrist bands, draw string bags and a bookmark. It was a very informative and beneficial experience. Marley commented “It was great to be out on the streets and see the different signs on the road and to also learn what they mean.” In addition, Year 4 were privileged to lead the Harvest Festival celebrations in St Mary’s Church. The children worked tirelessly to plan and prepare a singing performance for their school, family and friends. As part of the performance Year 4 spoke to the congregation about the brilliant job farmers do and we said a special prayer for them. Laughton class made all the letters of the alphabet and gave the names of different fruits and vegetables that begin with the various letters. X and U were very tricky for Isobel and Sofia. The whole class worked together to make the word H-A-R-V-E-S-T out of seeds, hay, fruit and vegetables. It has been a fun filled start to the academic year and we look forward to sharing more of our learning adventures with you. Miss Chakanetsa (Y4 teacher) 30 TICKHILL TODAY

Community Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, Thank goodness our awful few weeks passed without any fatalities. Even though we worked with two local vets it is still unclear why our dogs became ill. Our kennel assistants and volunteers worked tirelessly keeping further infection at bay. We are now back to work as usual with no lasting effects. Our vets bills were well over £3,500 and we had a huge appeal for donations on our internet page. Donations came flooding in, thank you seems such a small gesture for such a large response, but without all of your donations we would have really struggled with this extra high bill. But THANK YOU all so much for all the support we have had from the most amazing people, you literally were life savers. Moving on now, all but 2 of our puppies have been adopted, but we have the most adorable kittens available now. It is a little late for kittens’ season as they usually appear in the spring when the days are longer, but obviously nature has turned upside down this year. If you would like to come along with a view to adopting them Penny our cattery Manager will be happy to have a chat and show you all the cats and kittens that are available to adopt. We would all like to thank Johnjo Defty who ran the Vale of York Half Marathon on Sept the 11th. He raised a massive £560, this was his first half Marathon but completed it in good time. A fantastic achievement so well done. We are very grateful, we now think you need a bit of a rest before you start training for the next one!! Don't forget we have a shop in our reception area, so if your pooch needs a cosy coat as the cold days are coming this is the place to be. We have a lovely selection of hand knitted coats all sizes. Also dog toys, bowls, blankets and many more cat and dog paraphernalia. I have adopted another dog from Mayflower she is a cross Pointer and she has been a street dog in Cyprus, she has lived on the streets and latterly in a shelter in Cyprus for all of her 4 years. She has never lived in a home so as you can imagine I

Finding a forever home was expecting a few teething problems and more than one or two puddles! However she is the cleanest most subservient beautiful girl ever. She has had to fight to survive and has lots of scars on her lovely face. She has also had her fair share of puppies. Well, no more, she has now been spayed she is also understanding a little English and learning her name. We already have a Spaniel that is becoming her best friend and 3 cats that she is taking absolutely no notice of. I did imagine the worse, cats climbing up the curtains and swinging from light fittings to keep away from her. However it hasn't happened, it is all quite harmonious, which is a bonus. She is enjoying the routine and cuddling into her new basket in an evening. The only thing that does worry her are loud noises (bonfire night is approaching eek !!) and she is also frightened of children. Which leads you to believe she could have been teased or badly treated by them. But she does love grown ups and other dogs. It will take a while for her confidence to grow but watch this space for more. If you are thinking of adopting a cat or dog please come along and speak to us we will point you in the right direction and make sure the dog or cat you are choosing is the right one for you. Many thanks to everyone that has left towels and blankets in my garage they will come in very handy now that the chilly weather is around the corner. Last but not least please remember to keep your cats in on the run up to Bonfire night and the night itself as the loud bangs seems to go on forever. Keep your animals safe as it can be a terrifying time for all animals. Our telephone number if you need us is 01302 711330. Hope to see you soon

I live in the office but it gets very lonely here when the staff go home. I wish I could have a home of my own with a family to love. I need to be an only pet as I’m not very good around other dogs. I don’t like cats or other small furries at all. That way I can have all the fuss and don’t have to share.... Any children in my new home would ideally be over 10 as I can get very boisterous at times. I travel well and walk very nicely on the lead Please come and visit me during our opening times Just ask to meet me - I'll be waiting Roxy x

Garden View

Garden boundaries are emotive subjects. There have been any number of feuds between n neighbours over this very issue down the yearss and the main cause of aggro seems to be the e humble hedge. Actually, in spite of the improvements in fancy y fencing panels over the years, there really iss nothing nicer than a well kept hedge. Suburban hedgerows not only soften an n otherwise built-up landscape, they provide a lifeline for the wildlife which lives in towns and d cities. Hedges provide shelter, privacy and - if chosen n IRU IUXLW DQG ČľRZHUV IRRG Even the much maligned Leyland cypress hass D SDUW WR SOD\ ΖW FDQ SURYLGH D EULOOLDQW EXÎ?HU U DJDLQVW WUDÉ?F QRLVH IRU D VWDUW DQG ZLOO VFUHHQ unsightly views very quickly. Unfortunately it can easily become an out-of-control monster if left unchecked. Some have reached 36m/120ft! The trick with Leylandii is to remove their tops about 1m/3ft before they reach the desired height then clip them twice a year: once in April, once in September. This keeps them looking very smart but makes them rather high-maintenance hedges. Fortunately there are many slower growing hedging plants which don’t require such intensive care. On the whole, it’s best to choose a hedge which is in keeping with the style of your house and the area in which you live. So smart Victorian terraces look great fronted by evergreen privet or box while rural properties might consider a more natural hedge of holly, hawthorn, beech, rowan and blackthorn. While not entirely evergreen, a mixed hedge like this will provide beautiful autumn colour and plentiful food for wildlife.

I’ve seen gorgeous fuchsia hedges on my trips to the south coast, while slow-growing Yew is attractive and works well on poor, chalky soils. Euonymus does well even in polluted areas or coastal regions plagued by salt winds. November is a great time to plant a new hedge. No matter which type you choose, the secret of success lies in the soil preparation. Dig over the ground thoroughly and don’t skimp on the organic matter. Decide on the planting line and dig out a trench about 12 inches/30cm deep. p Fill the base with well-rotted manure or compost then replace the soil, adding in more organic matter as you go. Make sure you mulch around the young plants to help suppress weeds and retain moisture. You can trim the hedge even when it is young. It encourages stronger growth and a denser hedge structure. Plus a well maintained hedge will ensure that you and your neighbours stay on good terms for years to come.

Local History Society

Tickhill i khill and d District i i t The winter season began with our talk on Robin Hood, the main question being how much of the man is fact or merely legend. Our speaker had done extensive research on this elusive figure, with the most positive information coming from the Wakefield Records Office, of all places! That, together with several local village names, still in existence, makes it quite likely he was a Yorkshire man after all, despite the claims of Nottinghamshire! Our latest Occasional Paper, now on sale for £2 at KSM, Castlegate, is Dennis Walker’s 58 TICKHILL TODAY

‘A Wadworth childhood’. Dennis has many entertaining memories of his early life in the 1920s and 1930s as well as vivid details of Wadworth during the Second World War. Dennis has provided a wealth of photographs of local people and buildings to illustrate the Paper, a welcome addition to our Occasional Papers series. The 17th November meeting speaker is Alan Hancock, whose subject is ‘Jack and Ripper’ which now the dark nights have arrived, should send us all home looking over our shoulders!

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - November 2016

At a recent meeting with the Enforcement Officer for the Doncaster area the following information was provided to Tickhill Town Council for dissemination:

Responsible Dog Ownership ‘Good Dog Owner’ prize draws. This is where officers who witness owners picking up immediately after their dog thank the dog owner and offer to enter them into a prize draw, as an appreciation of their responsible attitude. The owner’s details are drawn out, and they receive a dog hamper, sponsored by Pets At Home this allow a dog fouling good news story to be publicise.

Dog Fouling Information What should dog owners do? Responsible dog owners do not allow their dogs to foul public places. Ideally, dogs should be trained from an early age to ‘go at home’ in their own garden before or after a walk, rather than during. If dog fouling does occur away from home, the responsible owner will clean up after the dog. Any suitable plastic bag can be used, or special poopscoop bags can be purchased from pet shops, veterinary surgeries or stores. Dispose of faeces in a poopscoop bin or take the bag home. If this is not possible, as a last resort, double wrap the faeces in two plastic bags and dispose of in a litter bin.

How to Poop Scoop Simply place a bag over the dog mess and lift it whilst pulling the bag downwards. Or use two pieces of cardboard to “scoop the poop” 62 TICKHILL TODAY

and put it in the bag. Tie a knot in the bag and dispose of it in a poop-scoop bin or take it home for disposal. Your hands do not come into contact with the faeces. Failing to remove dog fouling immediately is a criminal offence. Any person caught committing this offence in Doncaster will receive a £50 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN), which could lead to a fine of up to £1000 in the Magistrates’ Court if the notice is unpaid. Persistent offenders will not be given the option of a £50 FPN, as the Council will pursue a prosecution in court for such behaviour. Please note, there are exemptions from the legislation for guide dogs and those people with mobility problems that do not allow them to be able to remove their dog’s faeces. Dog fouling is not only unpleasant and unsightly, but it also carries harmful bacteria. To report dog fouling please contact Doncaster Council on 01302 736000 To date this year 90 FPN’s were issued, don’t be the next one.

A final note on Planning: Planning application information submitted to the Council is protected by the Copyright Acts (Section 47, 1988 Act). You may only use material which is downloaded and/ or printed for consultation purposes, to compare current applications with previous schemes, and to check whether developments have been completed in accordance with approved plans.
