Welcome to

Today

the OCTOBER 2014 edition

“The best thing about memories is making them” At the time of writing last month I was about to fly to the Greek island of Zante, for a holiday with not just my immediate family but also 10 other family members. A great time was had by all, my children spent lots of quality time with their cousins, with lots of beach, pool and splash park fun, sea swimming, turtle spotting, ice cream eating! We all made full use of the hotel’s entertainment programme with several T-shirts won in poolside quizzes and certificates for participation in all sorts of activities! My youngest Hannah, came so very close to achieving a Guinness World Record and Charlotte was invited to join the entertainment team on the stage and sing one evening. A great family holiday with many memories created. The school term is well under way and I am very pleased to report that so far 6th form and secondary are being enjoyed by my eldest and youngest children respectively – long may that last! Last month I forgot to note that the September issue was in fact the 100th issue of Rossington Today! Rossington Today was the 2nd magazine I launched back in 2006. Having failed to celebrate this landmark issue, I have now turned my attention to how to celebrate 10 years of Today Publications early next year. Ideas appreciated! The November issues will be delivered to you late October. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th October.

Enjoy October and I will be back in a months’ time with your November magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

ACTING TOGETHER

A brand new initiative to support local amateur drama societies in villages in Bassetlaw was unleashed last Saturday at Everton Village Hall. It is called Acting Together and is an informal network that brings these already vibrant societies together with the aim of sharing resources and skills. The idea originated at Everton who tempted other groups along to the meeting with a sumptuous cream tea. After a group brainstorm to identify the challenges facing village drama, the official representatives of six local societies have agreed to form a mutually supportive affiliation. It brings together hundreds of local drama enthusiasts. It will enable all of the societies to widen the scope of their productions, offering an even great range of entertainment than they already do to theatre goers across North Nottinghamshire. The Drama Societies involved are Bawtry Players, Blyth Players, Haxey Players, The Youth Theatre Worksop, Gainsborough Players and Everton Village Players

Acting Together was the brainchild of three members of Everton: Linda Larder, Margaret Hamilton and Jan Bailey. Linda, who facilitated the meeting on Saturday said “We are all very excited that we can now offer even more benefits to our members as well as our audiences who will be encouraged to support each others productions”. She said that Amateur drama groups are very important to their villages, because they are part of the glue that holds village communities together. She continued “Acting Together will ensure the societies are sustained long into the future. We are also looking forward to the possibility of joint productions and tours” Other local amateur drama groups who may be interested in sharing skills, actors, marketing and resources should go to www.evertonvillageplayers. co.uk for more information. Thank you for your help I know that the Tickhill Lions give a lot of their time to helping others and raising funds for projects to help other people but my thank you is more in the nature of a personal helping hand. As a less than agile pensioner I should really not have attempted, standing on steps, to prune one of the trees in my garden, but there you go and I am all for being independent. I did start to do this task when a member of the Lions, who lives nearby, appeared and gave up about two hours of his time and did a wonderful pruning job on my tree - looks marvellous! Thanks Frank just wanted you to know the help was very much appreciated. Carol Frankland. T

St Mary’s School WHAT A FANTASTIC DAY!!!! Year 3 and 4 at Tickhill St Marys recently went on a Stone Age adventure! They were battling wild hyenas, cavemen and woolly mammoth!! The adventure took place at Creswell Crags Museum and was an inspirational adventure. The children were split into two tribes and took part in a variety of events which included the making of dens in the forest and spear throwing. It was a very informative day as well as being great fun. We were able to experience how we might have survived in the wilderness during the Stone Age and even made fire using flint and sticks. As part of the day children spent some time in the education centre learning about rocks and soils by conducting various experiments. “We learnt a lot of interesting facts. I enjoyed the permeability test, using the soils and science equipment “said Maisie (year 4) Some children seemed to especially enjoy the spear throwing and others the den making. “The survival skills were brilliant. We used reindeer guts to tie our dens together – No not really it was only string “said Cameron (year 4) “I enjoyed building the dens” said Spencer (year 3) “I enjoyed destroying them” said Charlie (year 3) For others the highlight of the day was meeting a real caveman who showed us his cave and told us stories. It certainly was a day to remember. We all had a fantastic time and will certainly return again someday. 12

ɠ NjŎ ɠsĶOŸŎs ¯NjŸŎ ŸȖNj Řsɠ Ës _Ǽs OÌsNjʰ ħsÞǼÌ DÞŘĨǣʳ It was a very emotional moment when the chair of governors offered me the post of Headteacher at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College. It was the realisation of a long held ambition and of my dream to lead and serve the school and community about which I care so deeply. As Deputy Headteacher I have been an integral part of the many changes which have transformed our school into the college of which we are all so proud. I believe it is unrecognisable both in terms of environment and culture from the school we once knew. I would like to publicly acknowledge the vision and steely determination that Mrs McCorry provided as Headteacher in the drive for improvement. On behalf of the school community I would like to thank her for her contribution to this process as well as the personal support she gave to so many of us. I wish her every happiness in her well-deserved retirement. The values associated with a Cooperative Academy are of immense importance to me and are at the heart of my vision for our college. They drive our ambitions, decision making, how we learn, our behaviours and how we treat each other. Our motto ‘Learning for Life, Succeeding Together’ encapsulates what Sir Thomas Wharton Community College is about. As Headteacher I will ensure these values are inherent in everything we do. Despite the many improvements the journey is far from complete. Every student deserves to leave with the best possible set of skills and qualifications enabling them to succeed in their chosen careers and in life. This can only be realised with determined and resilient attitudes, coupled with dedicated teaching and support. Despite our many strengths we are not yet ‘outstanding’. I will continually strive until we are formally recognised as ‘outstanding’. From my background as a PE teacher and highly competitive sportsman I like to win. I also know that winners learn from setbacks and disappointments, work hard to improve, are resilient and have self-belief. These are the qualities I want to develop in our young people and our staff. I believe we all have the capability to be outstanding in our own way and with the right attitude, opportunities and support we can achieve this. I believe in our students, I believe in our staff, I believe in our wider community. Together we can achieve amazing things. I feel honoured and privileged to lead our college. Whether you are a student, a parent, a family member, college staff, from the local community, a business leader, a governor or just a friend, please join us on our journey of improvement and be part of the future success story of Sir Thomas Wharton Community College. Keith Binks Headteacher

Learning for Life Succeeding Together

Once again, Sir Thomas Wharton Community College achieved some outstanding individual performances in this summer’s results. A particular stand out performance was Emily Simpson with an incredible 11 A* GCSEs! We are equally proud of the students with lower grades who made exceptional progress from their Y7 starting points. The Sixth Form picture was one of impressive progress. The overwhelming majority of students surpassed their target grades. Collectively both Y12 and Y13 achieved an A Level Performance Measure (ALPS), the national benchmarking system, at Grade 2 in a 1-9 scale. This places both year groups performance in the top 10% nationally and is officially rated as outstanding! We congratulate our conscientious students and thank all our staff for their hard work. Our overall pass rate at GCSE including English and Mathematics dipped this year. The nationally reported ‘volatility’ across the country, caused by changes in assessment and the exams system, hit many schools, especially with students around the C/D borderline. This did impact on us too. For the adversely affected we will challenge the outcomes on their behalf and provide them with the support they need for their post 16 education - The Sir Thomas Wharton Way.

Emily Simpson opens her amazing results with 11 A*!

Amy Darby, Katie Marlow, Alex Nelder & Natasha Manning delighted with their results!

Here at the Sanctuary we have been busy all summer. We have been hand rearing some beautiful kittens that had been abandoned, this takes such time and patience but to see them get a little stronger each day is so rewarding. They are all thriving thanks to a lovely foster carer and hope they will be ready for their new homes in a few weeks. Whilst out walking someone’s dog found a litter of kittens in a sack next to a river (maybe someone intended drowning them and then their conscience got the better of them, who knows) The dogs owner couldn’t believe her eye’s when the sack was moving and was totally shocked at finding kittens waiting to die in a sack. Well, it’s a happy ending they are all fit and well and waiting for their new homes. We have lots of very special cats young and old. We have young twin marmalade tabbies that are an absolute dream, also lots of a little older cats that just need a knee to curl up on. An older cat makes a wonderful companion and would prefer maybe a quieter life with an elderly person which would be ideal. All our cats are neutered, vaccinated, flea’d and wormed before they go to their new home. If you would like any further information on our re-homing process please let us know. Our Sanctuary is full to overflowing and we have a waiting list of dogs that need to come to us. We have some really lovely dogs in at the moment, large, medium, small, pedigree and cross breeds all waiting for that special person to come along and take them home. There is a beautiful Labrador whose owner passed away and the family were not in a position to take care of him, he’s settled in well but it would be lovely to find him another perfect home to end his days.

Finding a forever home Our kennel staff and volunteers are the best people you could wish for to take care of our dogs and cats. They are a very special bunch of people that make our Sanctuary what it is. They take care of our dogs and cats individual needs and nothing is too much trouble for them. This is a stop gap for most of our residents but it is such a shame when a dog is still with us month after month. So please if you are considering giving a cat or dog a home come along and see us. We will be happy to chat about what dog or cat would be suitable and fit in with your lifestyle. We have some wonderful dog listener volunteers that have a meeting on a Saturday morning before you take one of our dogs home. They will give you some really good sound advise, particularly if you are a first time pet owner. Don’t forget we have a lovely charity shop on Retford Road in Manton with lovely gifts so please if you are in the area and looking for that special something you never know it could be waiting for you there. We will be in Doncaster doing a street collection on the 6th December which seems a long way away but I know it will be here before you know it. If anyone has any time to spend that day and is happy to smile and hold a collecting tin please call me, the more the merrier. If you would like any further information about our Sanctuary please call us and leave a message we will always call you back. 01302 711330 .

Hello I’m Lucky, And I came to Mayflower as my owner could no longer look after me. I am a loving girl and even though I am a bit older I still absolutely love to play fetch and have lots of life in me yet! I am good in the car and my recall off the lead is good. Hello I’m Bodie, I came to Mayflower from the local dog pound. When I first arrived at Mayflower the bones in my front legs were not growing properly and were bowed outwards....hence the name Bodie! They have now corrected themselves through good nutrition and gentle exercise. I am a very playful, loving, giddy Young lad that needs all the usual puppy training, for example toilet training, socialising and basic commands. I need a home that has plenty of time to spend with me as I’m always on the go and I love to play, with the right loving home I will grow into a beautiful young dog. If you would like to know anymore about me please don’t hesitate to talk to one of my carers.

What are we doing now at Wilsic Road Day Nursery? After a busy summer culminating in 2 Graduation Evenings we have now moved on to our latest activities! This term we have been to the Forest School at High Melton on the bus. The children spent the whole day enjoying the brilliant range of activities outside. From the Mud Kitchen to enjoying popcorn cooked on a camp fire to exploring the habitats of wild animals and a huge picnic they all had a brilliant day. Parents joined us and everyone agreed it was a great day out! At Wilsic Road Day Nursery we strive to give the children the broadest range of experiences possible to encourage their development. We aren’t phased by the idea of taking trips out using public transport to get us to The Yorkshire Wildlife Park to see the animals, Cleethorpes for a day at the seaside and now the Forest School! Our strict adherence to staff ratios and volunteer parents mean we can explore what’s beyond our immediate area. The Autumn term will see us out and about in Tickhill going to the library, the Church, the shops, the Milldam, the playground…that’s just a normal week for us. We will also be a part of the late night shopping event in November, the Christingle service in December and a myriad of outings all over Doncaster. The Nursery itself is full of activities and equipment to really stretch your child’s imagination. We now offer funded places for 2 year olds along with the 3-4 year old funded places. Ring us for information and an application form to see if you qualify for 15 hours free at the Nursery. We’re open all year round from 8am to 6pm. We are absolutely certain we can provide fun filled days for children to enjoy with our generous staffing ratios and ever expanding range of activities!

Estfeld School–

Prizewinners at Estfeld

On our return to school we found that we had a bumper harvest from the school garden and poly tunnel. Our gardeners had been busy before the holidays and we had many willing volunteers who helped by watering the plants over the Summer break. We had huge marrows, onions, beetroot and peppers; pumpkins, tomatoes carrots and beans. And what whoppers some of them were!

Our pupils entered some of the produce into the Horticultural Society Show and many of them were winners. Our gardeners won several prizes – well done to everybody involved; this was a great team effort on behalf of the Gardening Club, Mrs Booker, Mr and Mrs Whitaker and all who volunteered to water our plants over the Summer break.

chance to shine, with rosettes awarded to them and their owners too. Congratulations to one and all. The show is a wonderful community event. It is important that the pupils get involved; the excitement of going to the church hall on the Friday evening to enter and the anticipation of waiting to see if their efforts have won a prize are all part of what makes the show fun. Thank you to all of the parents who have helped in school or supported the children in entering the competitions or attending the show. Well done everybody. And finally….we had a sale of the produce outside school this week. This raised funds that will help to support the Gardening Club over the coming year and we know that our prize-winning vegetables will not go to waste.

We also had many pupils who entered the Young Gardeners Competition and the handicraft sections with great success; the pets also had a

TROUBLESOME TENDONS

There are many tendons in the body that are prone to becoming problematic – the Achilles in the ankle, the rotator cuff in the shoulder, the patella in the knee and the extensor tendon in the elbow to name but a few. Historically, it was thought that these problems were caused by inflammation and were thus labelled as tendon – itis (itis meaning inflammation) with subsequent treatment aimed at reducing inflammation with anti-inflammatory medication and steroid injections. Treatment outcomes were somewhat inconsistent and rarely satisfactory. Recent medical advances mean we now know that the predominant factor in these problems tends to be degeneration of the tendon tissue (tendonosis) with inflammation only occasionally having a minor part to play. Commonly, these problems are now referred to as tendonopathies – a more general term meaning tendon dysfunction.

Tendon degeneration occurs when the tendon is under excessive stress and strain which may be as a result of performing a new activity, increasing the frequency of a pre-existing activity or performing an activity during which the body is moving with altered biomechanics (e.g. the Achilles is under excessive strain in the foot with a fallen arch, the patella tendon is under altered load in someone walking or running with a stiff hip). As a result, the tendon becomes painful, thickened, tight, tender and weak. As Physiotherapists, we are in an ideal position to treat tendonopathies successfully. Movement patterns and biomechanics can be assessed and corrected to minimise ongoing strain on the tissue. Manual therapy techniques can reduce the thickening and tightness in the tendon whilst very specific training techniques help to strengthen the tendon tissue. Tendon problems can be stubborn problems but will get better with skilled and thoughtful treatment.

Tickhill Juniors Tickhill Juniors Football Club are pleased to announce having agreed a licence deal with Mel & Duncan Dewar of Limestone Hill farm for 4 acres of their land which adjoins our existing Friars Hill site of approx 11 acres, provided under a licence by David Brookfield. This is very important for us as a club as we now have well over 200 children registered to play football and are running 14 teams this coming season. We were running very short of both match pitches and training areas. The new land is currently being cultivated on our behalf by David Brookfield and being made ready for grass - seeding. We hope it will be ready for use in season 2015 - 16 Tickhill Juniors are very grateful to both Mel & Duncan for allowing us use of the new area - and of course to David Brookfield for his continuing support, and help in developing the site over the last 9 years. Tickhill Juniors is a Charter Standard Football Club providing the opportunity to play football in a well coached and safe environment for children from the age of 5 up to 16 years of age. We are entirely funded by subscriptions, fundraising activities and donations. Advertising slots are available at our Friars Hill site and anyone wishing details of this should contact me via e mail. Many thanks to Richard & Judy of Eastfield Farm for allowing the use of their facilities to accommodate car parking, keeping access and egress from the garden safe. Many thanks to the anonymous photographer, who took so many magnificent photographs, placed them on a CD and posted them through our letter box. Prepare your home for Winter As we wave goodbye to a golden Summer, now is the time to take action to protect your home from the ravages of the winter weather. Here are 5 practical tips to help prepare your home this Winter. 1. You may not have noticed the growth on the trees and large shrubs, check all overhanging trees are trimmed to prevent them causing damage to your home in the event of any heavy snow. 2. Significant damaged could be caused if broken or damaged roof tiles aren’t repaired and if the gutters and downpipes are not cleaned of leaves and moss they too could cause you a problem during heavy rain or strong winds.

Tel. 01302 570449 www.goodnight-sleeptight.net

3. Have your boiler serviced and check all thermostats and programmers are working and set at a sensible temperature. If your house is going to be unoccupied for a while ensure the heating comes on during the night to help prevent burst pipes. 4. Check external paintwork on window frames and doors, attending to flaking or chipped paint before the cold weather sets in. If you’re short of time, simply sand down the affected area and repaint, making a note to do the whole area in the Spring. 5. For those with an open fire now’s the time to have your chimney swept to ensure its clear and not being restricted by damage caused by nesting birds. These may be jobs you’re happy to carry out yourself, if in doubt call an expert in now before they get too busy. Simon Chandler | www.myplaceyourhome.co.uk

Dear Friends, This year marks the 100th year anniversary of the start of the First World War. My heart goes out to those who sacrificed their lives to make us safe. As we continue to honour and remember their heroisms, I wonder if the generations that have come after them have learnt their lessons. As at the time of writing this piece, I was trying to count the wars that are currently being fought in parts of the world – Libya, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Ukraine, and so on. I also find it difficult to recount the violence that is spotted all over the five or six continents in this world. As a Christian, one of the things that have become the basis of my reflections is the assurance that the Lord Jesus gives us peace. After Jesus had risen from the dead, he appeared to his disciples in the locked upper room, and breathed his peace unto them. After engaging with them for a while, he said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven...” (John 20: 21-23) (New International Version (NIV)). I imagine that if each of us were willing to pursue peace and forgiveness these wars and violent skirmishes that are now frequent in almost every continent would not be in place. I want to draw your attention to the fact that the Apostle Paul, writing to the church in Colossae, reminded them to ‘let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace’ (Colossians 3: 15) (NIV). Being called to peace is a responsibility. I don’t suppose that each of us need to be members of unions or the United Nation’s committees or become politicians in order to be agents of peace. I remember having a conversation with a friend who was blaming one faction for starting a war and justifying the other faction’s response. My reaction was, ‘wait till the missile falls in your bedroom or hall before you consider who to blame’. Let’s remind ourselves that there are no winners in a war, 34

TICKHILL TODAY

however justifiable we may think it is. May I suggest that we become agents of peace by expressing our non-violent feelings, opinions, and actions that can go a long way to help the victims of war. One of the ways is to continue to remind the politicians of the need to act in ways of bringing peace to the world. I wonder if you have also considered giving to the charities that are working around the clock in dangerous situations to help overcome the human sufferings in these war-torn areas. What about writing a note to one of the perpetrators if you are in a position of influence. As you celebrate harvest and remember the heroes of wars this autumn, my prayer is that ‘the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’ (Philippians 4:7) (NIV). I wonder if I can conclude with a quote from Jesus of Nazareth, which says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God”.(Matthew 5:9) (NIV) God bless you. patients as they are multi-tasking, ensuring patients are booked in. If you are hearing or vision impaired please make the receptionist aware and you will then gain their full attention. Q Blood Tests We have employed an additional Phlebotomist to support the taking of bloods.

(Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) During the Tickhill Gala the PPG asked patients for comments about the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery Medical Practice. Here is the response we received from the practice. “The Practice Manager has responded and is only too willing to respond to any further queries you may have regarding improvements. Q. Working Patients We do have extended hours surgeries on a Saturday alternating between Tickhill & Colliery Surgeries. We also have a late night surgery at the Colliery Practice on alternative weeks, Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. We have and will continue to maximise patient reviews for patients to minimise time off from work. Where possible telephone consultations will take place for medication reviews for those working, if there is no need to attend surgery. Q Teenage Patients School Nurse is sometimes the best point of contact as are drop in centres at some schools. We also recognise that not all teenagers are in Education or Training. Sit and wait surgeries are available to be seen on a first come first served basis though in exceptional circumstances an appointment may be made. Q Very Ill and Infirm We have recently been commissioned to do work with our most vulnerable patients, working with them and their carer network to ensure that these patients can access clinical support needed on the same day. Q Receptionists Our receptionists are very hard working, understanding and empathetic. They are trained to ensure that each call is signposted to the appropriate clinician and will make decisions based on the information given to them by patients. What a patient thinks is an emergency very rarely is, our receptionists try to accommodate all patient requests for a same day consultation. Patients who make an appointment on the same day and fail to turn up are wasting not only surgery time but impact on the number of patients who can be seen in a day. If asked by the GP to make an appointment with a nurse, within a week, it would make better sense to make the appointment whilst still in the surgery building explaining reasons for so doing. Receptionists may not make eye contact with 36

TICKHILL TODAY

Blood tests for analysis are not carried out on site and sometimes we do not get the results before 11am. As a practice we may look at utilising mobile technology to inform patients of blood results. Q Extra sessions The Surgery is governed by British Medical Council guidelines with the number of Doctors employed dictated by the number of patients on their register. The idea of extra sessions would have to be funded not out of the public purse but privately. As a practice if we were allowed to fine patients who did not attend their appointments this would pay for an additional 6 sessions per week or in other words another GP. Q Telephone Message Our telephone system is set up, like any other organisation of our size to ensure you get through to the correct department. We cannot make this message any shorter than it already is. The Practice will look at redirecting calls to the other surgery when one is closed for half day. Our Practice Leaflet has all our business hours on it as has our website, a quick check would ensure that you did not waste time in calling the surgery when it is closed. The PPG thanks the Practice Manager for the above response and will continue to pass on questions and comments received. We acknowledge the number of patients who pass on positive comments and praise for the staff at The Practice. We pass them all to the practice. For those Patients who asked about how to get specific information re their blood tests the Practice response is that patients can ask for a print out of their results for collection from reception. We could assist The Practice in contacting us by ensuring we give them up to date details of Address, Landline and Mobile numbers. This can be done online or in person.

Welcome On behalf of all patients The PPG warmly welcomes Dr J Collins who joins the medical practice as a partner. Many of our patients will have met Dr Collins whilst she has been working as a registrar at the Practice for the last year. REMINDER The PPG AGM is on Wednesday October 15th 2014 at The Parish Rooms Tickhill. You can contact the PPG via the comments boxes in both surgeries or at tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com Jan Hart (Secretary) T

Friday 19th September 2014 marked Bluebell Wood Hospice’s sixth birthday. We’re so proud to have provided care and support at the hospice since 2008. We’ve been here for our families during the hardest times imaginable and provided care when they’ve needed us most. We wouldn’t have been able to be here for the past 6 years without the help of our amazing supporters who work tirelessly to raise the money which is used to carry out this work. You’ve helped us create unforgettable memories for our children, be there for parents during the toughest times and create smiles with our siblings.

#Justtext6

Become one of our birthday heroes and join the celebrations by fundraising for us! We’re encouraging our incredible supporters to help us continue our work by getting involved in our #Justtext6 appeal. By text donating £6 you’ll be helping us to carry on our vital work. Tickhill & District Lions Club We have been busy as usual over the last few weeks with amongst other things the excellent Lions Fun and Sports Day for the Disabled being held at Sandal Park, Doncaster which was as usual well supported and attended with 26 Lions Clubs facilitating the days activities. More recently we were in place with a BBQ at the Tickhill Velo another tremendous local event and your local Lions provided a £500 donation for presentation to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance a most worthy cause that has assisted many people and requires massive funding to continue it's work. We continue to put the monies raised from you and your generous neighbours to good use locally too but at times we must keep detail discreet for the privacy of those we help but be assured our welfare committee works tirelessly to ensure funds are spent appropriately. It seems autumn is upon us and for your local Lions that can only mean one thing, Bonfire Night won't be too far away! This year we are pleased to announce that once again the event will take place in the grounds of the Tickhill Cricket Club and it is to be staged on Saturday 8th November so book us into your diary for what I'm sure will be a spectacular family orientated evening. More details will follow in the next issue but I'm getting excited already..... Can I leave you this month with a gentle friendly reminder. My elderly Mum who lives alone reminded me that during the summer she spends time outside chatting to her neighbours in the garden but soon however the nights will draw in and the weather become colder (and wetter) and she will see people less and less as she stays in where it's warm. Please give a thought for those less mobile and more elderly residents of your lovely village. We all lead such busy lives but it only takes a minute to pick up the phone or drop in on someone you haven't heard from for a while. The Lions motto is 'We Serve' and we endeavour to do so where we can but you can help too by being that good neighbour.

Community Dementia Friends Support Caring for someone with dementia can be a long, stressful, and intensely emotional journey. But you're not alone. In the UK, there are about 800,000 people living with dementia, and millions of others around the world. As a caregiving you can make the biggest difference to your loved one's quality of life. That is a remarkable gift. However, caregiving can also become overwhelming. As your loved one's cognitive, physical, and functional abilities diminish over a period of years, it's easy to neglect your own health and well-being. The burden of caregiving can put you at increased risk for significant health problems you could experience depression, stress, and as a caregiver you may at some time experience sadness, anxiety, loneliness, and exhaustion Seeking help and support along the way is not a luxury for caregivers; it's a necessity. However, there are strategies that can help make the caregiving journey as rewarding as it is challenging. Learning all you can about what is happening and what to expect on the dementia journey will not only help your loved one, but is also the first step towards protecting your own physical health. Benefits of attending one of the Community Dementia Friends Support groups below maybe:-

• an opportunity to share information • a chance to meet other people with dementia and their carers • sharing experiences and resolutions to problems • emotional and practical support • information and sign posting about local services • an opportunity of joining in activities

What a load of rhubarb! Cast your mind back to the fabulous sunny months of April, May and June, when the rhubarb plants were producing delicious stems of juicy fruit, perfectly ripe for crumble. Each of the stems (so technically not a fruit at all) which blushed with the colour of pink champagne or deep raspberry sorbet depending on the variety, could easily be torn from the plant, topped and tailed and then either used immediately or blanched and frozen for later. Rhubarb freezes very well, and lasts for around a year, in fact I made a crumble in April this year using last years frozen harvest. Chopped into 1cm pieces, it can be placed directly into freezer bags, but to retain its colour should be blanched for around 1 minute in boiling water. Allow to cool and dry before freezing. To revive, boil in a little fresh orange juice, a teaspoon of cinnamon powder and sugar to taste before allowing to cool. It’s a versatile crop and makes great jam, compote and crumble, and tastes delicious when made as above and served with crème fraîche. Rhubarb originates from the colder parts of China and its popularity is fairly recent in historical terms, becoming more widely eaten as sugar became less expensive. The 52

TICKHILL TODAY

leaves are toxic and so too are the stems later on in the year, because the toxic acids move down the stems from the leaves and into the crown as the winter temperatures cool. October is the perfect time to plant rhubarb if you haven’t got any at the moment and would like a patch of your own. It’s quite unfussy and will grow in sun or part shade as long as the soil is moisture retentive. Add well-rotted manure to the planting hole and mulch the plant with a ‘doughnut’ shape of manure about 50cm deep in spring. Give the plant a feed with ‘blood, fish and bone’ in March and watch it grow! It’s an easy perennial plant, which produces giant leaves and is pretty resistant to pests, although hungry mammals might feast on the crowns in early spring when food is scarce. Early rhubarb can be ‘forced’ inside up-turned dust bins, but only do this with established plants. Place a black bin (or terracotta rhubarb forcing jar if you’re a pro) over the plant in early spring, and then enjoy the small, tender and sweet stems as they develop and search for the light. Grown commercially in large dark sheds in the Yorkshire rhubarb triangle - between Wakefield,

Leeds and Morley - this wonderful vegetable (classed as a fruit for tax reasons) can also be divided up this month if you have a large overgrown patch. Happy Gardening

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee .

EVERTON VILLAGE PLAYERS

“IT’S ON - IT’S OFF!” Local Sheffield playwright Ray Lawrence brings his fabulous comedy “It’s On - It’s Off” to the area this October. This brilliant comedy will be performed by Everton Village Players and the Director, Barry Nicholls, is particularly proud, because Ray was one of his Creative Writing students on his Abbeydale Writers course. When he read the script, Barry knew he would love to direct it, and Everton Village Players said “It’s On!” A former Chartered Secretary in the Engineering Industry, Ray Lawrence has written many plays which have been performed across the UK, North America and Australia and so it’s a real treat to see one of his plays so close to home. 56

Tickhill and Bawtry St. Mary's Church 100 Club Probus Club Our membership has now risen to 79, a record high. We are very pleased to welcome all those who have joined in recent months and hope that they will enjoy friendship and fellowship with us for many years to come. We are probably best known as the retired businessmen’s club which meets every 2nd and 4th Thursday at 10.00am at the Millstone, but from time to time we do more than that. On 11th August members, partners and friends set off for Scotland for a very full three days of activities. On the second day, a morning visit to Stirling Castle was followed by a ‘sailing’ on the Falkirk Wheel and, in the evening, by the highlight of the trip, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. On our final morning, we explored the Royal Yacht before returning home. Add in a very comfortable hotel and some splendid meals, and a very enjoyable time was had by all. Congratulations and thanks to David Green for a masterpiece of organisation.

But back to the 2nd and 4th Thursday meetings. Our programme for the rest of the year is as follows; th Oct. 23rd Oct. 13th Nov. 27th Nov. 11th Dec. 25th Dec.

“Dunkirk/Battle of Britain” R. Wimpenny “TICKHILL, discover its past” Carol Hill “Remembrance” Evan Anderson Members Lunch at the Millstone Hodsock Priory G. Buchanan NO MEETING !

If you are not already a member but would like to see what goes on you will be very welcome as a guest at any meeting other than the members’ lunch on 27th November. After the meeting you may enjoy a drink in the bar with new friends or perhaps even stay for lunch. See if you can resist the temptation to join – most can’t! T

TICKHILL Cricket Club Tickhill CC are obtaining funding in the close season to replace our tired wooden changing rooms with brick built ones. This will upgrade our facilities to enable us to hold more mixed cricket and more disabled cricket, as well as enhancing the facilities for our own teams, from the under 9’s through to the first team. At present we are trying to match the funding, which is part of the criteria for winning the funding. We are running “buy a brick “ to help raise these funds. For £50 you can buy a brick and you are then entitled to put 2 lines of text on to it (with up to 16 characters on each line, spaces count as characters). Once the changing rooms are built a company will come and engrave all the bricks which have been bought. We intend to have these bricks in a band around the new tea /meeting room in the new facility so they will be on show to all.

If by any chance anyone is feeling really generous, our score board is also on its last legs and a new one is going to be in the region of £3000 plus vat. Yes just what we need at the moment! Sponsor its replacement and you could have your company board above or below the new score board, for the next 5 years! If anyone requires a form to ‘buy a brick’ please contact Paul Foster on 07900 951347 or e-mail , paul.foster@gabbroprecision.com and I will get a form to you. We ask that for the bricks you either pay now or at least pay a £10 deposit. Please also use these contact details for enquiries regarding the score board. Alternatively to ‘buy a brick’ call in and see Lynne Bradshaw at Small World Travel in Tickhill as she has forms too. Thank you for your time , Paul

Tickhill Bowling Club At the time of writing, we are now approaching the end of the season with our last match being at Carcroft on the 29th September. I will provide a summary of our league positions in the November issue of Tickhill Today. The Club was very pleased to receive the wonderfully generous contribution by Tickhill Lions of 4 sets of junior bowls that will enable to Club to get more youngsters to enjoy our game. Again, more information will be provided in the November magazine. The green at Tithe lane is scheduled to close on the 4th October and so you have just a little time left to come along and try our delightful sport. Our finals day held on Sunday the 12th September was a great success. It was a gorgeous sunny afternoon and trophies were presented at the end of the competitions by Harry Moores and we all enjoyed a lovely buffet afterwards.

The winners and runners up of the competitions were: COMPETITION Men’s Singles Over 60 Ladies Singles Men’s Singles Doubles 62

TICKHILL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY The 27th Annual Show on September 6th was opened by the Headteacher of St Mary's CE Primary and Nursery School, Mrs Janet Sanderson, who presented the trophies later in the afternoon. The show covers a wide range with fruit, vegetables, flowers, floral art, baking, preserves, needlework and other handicrafts, photography, Art and children's sections.

During the afternoon the Pet Show attracted a range of dogs, a rabbit and a couple of guinea pigs for the three classes, the 'Most Loveable', 'Happiest' and 'Scruffiest' pets. There was little barking but plenty of tail wagging and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Special thanks to Mrs Penny Brittain for the difficult task of judging the animals. The rain held off until everyone had gone home so the pets stayed dry and visitors were able to sit outside enjoying tea and cakes and appreciating the lively music from the Bramley Youth Brass and

TICKHILL PARISH ROOM Even old listed buildings can accommodate new technology!! Possibly by the time you read this article we will have Wi-Fi installed in the Parish Room. If not actually installed – it’s on its way! Hopefully by the time you read this article I will be an expert on the usage/operation of Wi-Fi!! Cycle Race Day in the Parish Room - this was a hugely successful day for the whole of Tickhill. We were open very early for the Marshalls, Press and staff who were organising the event. We continued all day till 8 p.m. keeping them fed and watered and serving refreshments and snacks to anyone else who cared to come in and join us! It was perfect weather and everyone who came into the Parish Room seemed to be delighted with the whole event. As we move forward to the colder weather new classes are appearing on the horizon. Rachel Fletcher has started another Futterwacker class for Mums and Tots on a Friday morning from 9.30 a.m. This is a term time only class, but Rachel continues this new class with her usual boundless energy and enthusiasm. On Tuesdays Yoga has already returned, Slimming World (Christine) comes along for her 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. classes. Slimming World classes are famed for being 52 weeks of the year, but no doubt there is renewed enthusiasm to lose those summer holiday pounds in time for Christmas. WI meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 2 p.m. and the Francophiles are back after a summer break, also on the first Wednesday of the month. Our regular coffee mornings are every Saturday from 10 - 12. Do call in and meet old and new friends for a natter over coffee and biscuits. Everyone is made very welcome. This will be from 6.15 p.m. All patients are entitled and invited to attend. Contact the Surgery for further details. We have a provisional booking for Saturday 18th October. This is for a sale of Baby Clothes. Watch out for further details of this nearer the time. If you require any information on this please ring me on 07840419763, when I will be happy to help. On the 22nd October Tickhill Flower Club will be in the Parish Room from 7.30 p.m. All in all a very busy month. Although we do still have available dates for your party/class/occasion/ meeting/'do', so feel free to get in touch to discuss this with me! Our lovely building is perfect for many occasions, and our fully equipped kitchen is second to none and our rates are very reasonable.

Tickhill & District

“Tickhill Discover its Past”

local History Society

The Society has just launched its new book on the history of Tickhill – TICKHILL – discover its past – written by Carol Hill. It has more than 300 pages with 15 chapters illustrated throughout with lots of carefully restored photographs. It is designed to appeal to all those who enjoy local history and aims to be easy to read yet full of rich and interesting detail. It is gratifying to note that, even before the launch evening on 18th September almost 150 copies had been pre sold. The book is on sale, price £20 in KSM, Castlegate and in the Library. Marketing the book has presented new challenges and we are grateful to all those who have helped including the 130 plus members who have renewed their memberships in the Library to reduce congestion at the Launch Meeting; Lesley Nicholson who pre sold them over 100 copies of the book; Linda Mayes and her team at KSM and Tickhill Library who have both given us window space for advertising; Paula Mickley who has likewise given us advertising space in Tickhill Today and done the artwork for the advertisements, also Paul Thomas of Ultimate Bathrooms who altered his front cover advert in the September issue to include a flyer about TICKHILL’S NEW BOOK. Thanks to all the above – and many others!

Our October meeting. Because of the Book Launch our AGM has been postponed to Thursday October 16th when it will be followed by a talk “A short history of Tickhill Castle” by Lloyd Powell. Lloyd is a well-respected local historian and his talk is certain to be interesting. The meeting will be held at the Methodist Schoolroom in Northgate at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) and as usual visitors will be welcome. Back to business as usual! 68

Tickhill Town Council - OCTOBER 2014 The Audit for the Council’s Finances is now complete and 2013/14 have just been finalised. As a legal requirement we must advertise the accounts and the certificate has been displayed as required by law on the Tickhill Town Council Notice board and on our Website, alongside the financial statement. Our Financial position has been consolidated over the past 12months and hopefully with prudence and careful spending we will remain in a healthy position. Each month the accounts for payments are prepared and distributed to all Councillors and an up to date statement of receipts and payments for the financial year to date are also submitted. Payments due that month are provided and set out against budget. The finances are monitored both monthly and quarterly. At year end the Internal Auditor scrutinises all transactions and bank information and it is then sent to Government Approved External Auditors. As you are probably all aware it was the intention to bring the Pavilion up to a more usable standard by updating two of the toilets, monies did allow, and the floor covering was replaced too. I have been able to make savings 70

TICKHILL TODAY

in many areas to facilitate this, mainly in the staffing area. Much reduction has been made also with my own home being within the town thus reducing travel and postage costs. We are now beginning to see the fruits of our labours and hopefully the Pavilion facilities and Tickhill Town area are showing signs of improvements. I have included in this edition of Tickhill Today a full break down of our financial position.

Neighbourhood Plan Residents have been asking what is happening as everything has gone quiet. The formal consultation phase on the Borough Council’s website finished early in August and we are waiting for the Independent Examiner to report on the Plan. This stage is out of our hands and the timing depends on the Borough Council I can confirm we have Children’s Activities Planned for Tuesday October 28th and Thursday 30th October. More details as soon as everything is confirmed but the one on the 28th will be 1-3pm for sports and then hopefully 4-6 for a party with a disco. The 30th will be 1-3pm for sports. Hopefully the weather will be kind. Look out for more details.

Today, Kyle is very close to achieving his dream. He went to an airline open day where he met with pilots from Emirates who had come from all around the world. He was accompanied by fellow pilots that were all competing for a space in the aviation training world that is so hard to become part of. After a gruelling process against fierce competition, Kyle was accepted at Stapleford Flight Centre as a training pilot and the course starts in January 2015.

Kyle Tubbs has an ambition to become a pilot. Kyle first became interested in flying at the age of six, and his dream was born. He knew then that he wanted to fly for a living. Even at primary school, when others were out on the playground, the teachers would find Kyle reading flying manuals. At 15, he had his first flying lesson, at 16 he took his first solo flight after only 14.4hrs flying time. Kyle then achieved his pilot’s licence exactly one month after his 17th birthday, and gained his ground to air licence, six weeks before his 18th birthday - but couldn’t accept the qualification until he was 18 years old! 74

However, Kyle must fund this training at a cost of £36,000. He must raise the money by the end of 2014 to take up this opportunity. Kyle is looking for a loan to be able to secure his place and fulfil his dream. Kyle is currently working at Sandtoft Airfield at Belton, Doncaster, which includes four days in the engineering hanger and two days in the office doing airfield management / operations (manning the radio for inbound / outbound air traffic). He is also broadening his knowledge in the aviation industry to help him to succeed, as well as trying to build his flying hours. Kyle who is an ex Maltby Academy student, is an average 18 year old student from a disadvantaged background, who against the odds has reached this incredible achievement. If you want to help Kyle or know more about his story then email Kylescorvette@hotmail.co.uk T
