William James With further changes to our education system, in particular the proposed reintroduction of Grammar Schools once again placing education standards in the spotlight, it made a refreshing change to speak with Teen Motivator Kevin Mincher this week. His work revolves around our young people needing not only academic lessons, but also lessons in life, happiness, resilience, and confidence building. I look forward to hearing more from Kevin as he works with staff, parents and students to ensure students develop a positive mindset to assist them in the ever changing world. I mentioned at this time last year that I am always just a little bit sad as the nights begin to draw in. Another summer having passed by, without me managing to spend as much time enjoying the outdoors as I had planned to! This year the plentiful late summer sunshine has stopped me noticing the evenings drawing in quite so much, and the addition of our little puppy to the family has definitely meant that I have spent more time outside. The November issues will be delivered to you late October. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 7th October. Please note that this is actually the first Friday of the month and the closing date is usually the 2nd Friday so don’t get caught out by the early close caused by needing the magazines to be with distributors before lots of them disappear on half term holidays! It’s a new school year and while we were all sad to see our 2016 Leavers go on to primary school we have been very happy to welcome new faces to the Nursery. We held our annual Graduation Evening in August and the children pictured here on the evening include many who have been with us since they were babies. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of working at a Nursery. We get to watch the children develop from being small, very dependent babies and toddlers to becoming independent young learners who are equipped and ready for the next big step to school! We currently have spaces at the Nursery for all ages from 3 months to 4 years. Our current program of events includes weekly sessions with Mini Kicks, trips to the woods for den building, trips to the theatre, and the Doncaster Food Bank. We combine our learning at the Nursery with experiences outside. We firmly believe that giving the children more than our 4 walls helps to increase their confidence and communication skills.

Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, Unfortunately we have had a very challenging couple of weeks. At least 60% of our dogs came down with a mystery infection and 16 had to be hospitalised on drips. This has been a very stressful time for us all, however fingers crossed there have been no new cases in 6 days and all have responded well to treatment. A very big thank you to Balby Vets on Springwell Lane, also Dowdings in Gainsborough without your help and understanding we are sure we would not have been able to come through this harrowing time unscathed . Our Sanctuary was closed for two weeks as a precaution so we really sorry for the inconvenience this caused everyone but we needed to keep the infection contained. So far the Vet’s bills are well over £3,000 and rising. Obviously if anyone wishes to make a donation to help us that would be wonderful. If you would like to take a look at our Face Book page we have an appeal on the Just Giving g site. We recently had a Yard/Table top sale and raised nearly £500 which was a brilliant result and will help towards the recent vets bills. The Table top is held on the last Sunday in the month, the next ones being 25th September and 30th October from 10 am until 12pm. A student special day will be included on this date too, refreshments will be available with yummy homemade cakes, so come along and bag a bargain . A big thank you for everyone that contributed to-wards this amazing total and we hope to see yyou again g soon.

It was a very sad day when she brought me here and then left me behind. I was luckily rehomed quite quickly and I settled into my new home just fab. Unfortunately things went badly wrong when I scratched the toddler. After that she was scared of me and so here I am looking again for a new family to love.

We will also be back fund raising at M&S on Wheatley Hall Road in October so watch out for us and sayy hello. 6 beautiful puppies have been brought to us via the police, there has been an ongoing cruelty court case and they needed the puppies as evidence, however they have just released them and they are now ready for rehoming. As all puppies they are very playful and bouncy and just waiting for their forever loving home. Please be aware we do not rehome puppies with children under 5 yyears of age. g As with all our dogs we would also need your fence to be at least 5ft high with a secure locked gate. g A big thank you to Worksop Wheelers Mark and Andy they raised a whopping £1115 for our Charityy yyou are amazing gg guys. y We hope everyone has enjoyed their summer break and hope to see you y all soon.

(But he will get there) Their new families will have to continue their socialisation but the wait will be well worth it.

Tickhill Estfeld School Harvest Time at Tickhill Estfeld

At Estfeld we have a well-established garden g with raised beds, fruit trees and a poly tunnel, which means that we can g garden for most of the school year. Our pupils are keen gardeners and Mrs Karen Booker runs a lunchtime gardening club, which is extremely popular. When we left school before the Summer break the pupils had several established crops (including beans, radishes, pumpkins, onions, tomatoes, chillies, peppers, carrots, aubergines, courgettes and beetroot) which were watered by volunteers during the holiday. Thank you to them all, especially Mr Perkins, our site manager and Mr and Mrs Whitaker. The pupils were delighted to see how their crops had grown and have been busy harvesting them since returning to school. 16 TICKHILL TODAY

This raises a little money y which is used by the gardening club to self-fund th heir activities.. Are you sitting comfortably? More people now than ever before spend much of their working life sat down and so we need to be aware of what constitutes good sitting posture in order to minimise preventable stress/strain. You should feel relaxed when sitting, it’s not about rigid, super straight spines. Your spine should feel aligned – head on top of neck on top of shoulders on top of trunk on top of pelvis. Your weight should be evenly distributed through both buttocks with your feet flat on the floor. If you raise your chair height to allow your knees to be slightly lower than your hips this can help prevent your pelvis tipping backwards (which is what happens when we slouch!) Some seats will allow you to achieve this more easily by having an adjustable tilting seat pad. Your computer screen is best placed an arms length away with the screen at eye level. With your keyboard in the right position your wrists should be straight with your forearms horizontal and your elbows by your side creating an L shape. Something else to be mindful of is bifocals and varifocals. People often end up adopting awkward neck positions in order to see clearly when a different pair of glasses would be more appropriate. Frequent short breaks allow the body a brief reprieve and you should aim to take a 2 minute break from sitting every half an hour. Finally, remember that any changes you need to make to your sitting habits may take a little while to get used to – but persevere and you’ll reap the benefits.

Tickhill Horticultural Show!

This week, Tickhill St Mary’s C of E Primary and Nursery School took part in the much loved Tickhill Horticultural Show. The children had an absolutely wonderful time taking part; enjoying some fabulou art and craft activities including Paper Faces, Monster Vegetables and Sport Spoons. Every year grou in school took part in the event. Year 2 were so unbelievably excited about the show that they had to take part in every single activity in their category. The children were extremely impressed with both their own and their peer’s work, especially when it came to the Monster Veg! One child said it was the best activity they have taken part in so far and another said they enjoyed the Paper Faces because of the freedom they had to choose anything; including aliens, animals and even their teachers! 22 TICKHILL TODAY

However there were two works which were so powerful as to knock the rest of it into a cocked hat, both were dealing with realm of abuse, brilliantly executed, completely compelling and powerful. So apart from an artist with a confusing name what will you see? …. How do they work? For Property Trust Wills to be effective you must own your property jointly with your partner. Most partners own their home as joint tenants. This means when one dies the home will automatically pass to the survivor. We will alter the ownership from joint tenants to tenants in common. GCSE Results There was much excitement and positive emotion in the college hall as students and their parents collected results. Results day is without doubt one of the best days of the year! Many students were overjoyed on opening their examination envelopes as the realisation sunk in that all the hard work had paid off. 23 of them attained 5 or more A*/A grades which represented a 10% rise on 2015 performance! The top performers were Lauren Jackson who attained an amazing 6 A*s and 6 As, Isabelle Walker also received 6 A*s and 5 As, whilst Matthew Smeaton picked up 5 A*s and 6 As. Increasingly, ‘progress’ from entry to the school is the measure of success. Many students exceeded their expected progress in 8 subjects combined (Progress8). They may not have got a full set of the highest grades but students like Nathan Smith, Jacob Frost-Ward and Bethany Warren averaged 2 grades higher than projected in their best 8 subjects. They proved high expectations and hard work reap rewards. English and Mathematics are crucial to students’ life chances and both subjects improved on their 2015 performance with expected progress scores rising by 13% and 10% respectively and beyond expected progress scores by 10% and 7%.

Tickhill Town Council - October 2016 2 The Audit for the Council’s Finances is now complete e and 2015/16 has been finalised. finalised As a legal requirement the Council must advertise the Notice of Conclusion of Audit and the External Auditor certificate and report for 2015/16: both have been displayed on the Tickhill Town Council Notice board and on the Website, alongside the financial statement from 24th August 2016 to 9th September 2016 Each month the accounts for payments are prepared and distributed to all Councillors and an up to date statement of receipts and payments for the financial year to date are also submitted. Payments due that month are provided and set out against budget. The finances are monitored both monthly and quarterly. At year end the Internal Auditor scrutinises all transactions and bank information and it is then sent to Government Approved External Auditors. As you are all aware it is the intention of the Council to bring the Pavilion up to a more usable standard by gradually improving the amenities and this financial year a Temporary Manager has been appointed to assist in a more professional approach to the running of the pavilion. The position will be advertised in the January 2017. The Council has provided a new water main to the pavilion, with a bigger capacity and this too has improved conditions for the participants at the Gala Day, Scruffs Dog Show, The Tickhill Grand Prix and the ongoing use of the showers for the footballers etc. The fruits of the hard work are now beginning to ripen and hopefully the Pavilion facilities and Tickhill Town area 62 TICKHILL TODAY
