‘‘
There are two seasons in Scotland - Winter and July ~ Billy Connelly
ok so this quote relates to scotland but to be honest i think it can be applied to most of northern Britain too! July already and I for one, am hoping that summer is upon us. 6th July sees the 40th anniversary Tickhill Scout and Guide Gala. Once again a huge amount of work has gone into organising this event in Tickhill, and I hope that everyone has their fingers crossed that the rain stays well away this year and that the Gala can be the best ever. See pages 68 onwards for more Gala details. School children are preparing for the summer break, exams finished for this year, and the joys of sports day, end of term concerts and school reports are ahead. For St Marys School, this summer brings more changes than usual with the impending retirement of their Headteacher Mrs Jayne Boaler. Mrs Boaler has been head of the school for 13 years and will be greatly missed, but I am sure you will join me and the rest of the school in wishing her well in her retirement. For more details of how you can help her celebrate her retirement please see the school’s regular feature on page 34. For parents of school children July does of course herald the start of at least 6 weeks of entertaining children – looked forward to by many, but dreaded by others! Personally I love the break from routine and my days being less timetabled by school runs and evening activities, although I am lucky to have more flexibility in my working hours than most working parents. Whatever plans you have for July, I hope that the sun shines on you, and I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy the longer days while they last. The August issues will be delivered to you late July, anything that you would like included should be with me by Friday 12th July. I must also warn you that the closing date for September issues will be much earlier in the month than normal, so not wanting to wish the summer away you may like to give thought to anything that needs to be in the September issue sooner rather than later.
Best wishes, Paula x

18 Libraries a Castle & a Tent:
Author goes on the road to meet readers for Crime Writing Month Tickhill Library will be among the stops for an award-winning crime novelist during six weeks of events to mark National Crime Writing Month. Stephen Booth is the creator of two young Derbyshire police detectives, DS Ben Cooper and DS Diane Fry, who have appeared in twelve crime thrillers, all set in and around the Peak District. A thirteenth book in

the series, Already Dead, is due for publication in June. Stephen is embarking on a series of reader events which will see him visiting eighteen libraries in Yorkshire and the Midlands, as well as bookshops and other venues ranging from a castle to a story-telling tent. “I’m a keen supporter of libraries,” said the author. “And there’s been a fantastic response from library staff around the region eager to host events for Crime Writing Month. They know how much their readers enjoy crime fiction, which remains one of the most popular genres year after year. I love meeting readers too, so I’m really looking forward to the next few weeks. I’ll be talking about how I became a writer, why I chose to write crime fiction - and of course about the Cooper and Fry series, which is what I’m best known for. Readers write to me all the time about the characters and the locations used in the books.” Stephen was a newspaper journalist for more than 25 years, but left journalism in 2001 to write crime novels full-time after the success of his first book, Black Dog. Since then, he’s won awards on both sides of the Atlantic, and in 2003 he was presented with the
Dagger in the Library Award by the Crime Writers’ Association for “the author whose books have given readers most pleasure.” One of his characters, Detective Sergeant Ben Cooper, was a finalist for the Sherlock Award for the Best Detective created by a British author. Stephen has been described by the Sunday Telegraph as “one of our best story tellers” and by The Guardian as “a modern master of rural noir”. Stephen Booth’s latest Cooper and Fry novel Dead and Buried was recently released in paperback, and his new book Already Dead will be published by Sphere on Thursday 20th June in hardback and ebook formats. On Thursday 11th July, Stephen will be visiting Tickhill Library to talk to readers, followed by a Q&A and book signing. The event starts at 2pm, and admission is free. To book a place, phone 01302 742871 or email: tickhill.library@doncaster. gov.uk. He will also be signing copies of Already Dead at Waterstones in Doncaster on Saturday 6th July (11.30am - 1.30pm). T

Money Saving Expert Top 10 Hidden Bill Perils
WIS MARTIN LE 1. “MY SIX-YEAR-OLD SPENT £3,200 ON AN IPHONE GAME”. Recently, England player Sam Vesty got smacked with a £3,200 bill after his 6 and 8 year olds bought their virtual farm animals a mountain of food, at £70 a pop. This is just one of the countless examples I’ve heard of. It’s disgusting that a kids’ game allows this, but it happens, so protect yourself. If you’re going to let the kids use your tech, protect your password—your kids may know it without you knowing so change it regularly. Plus ensure your phone’s “app purchases” setting is restricted, so it needs a password. Also speak to your network about financial and parental controls. An alternative with iPhones is to delink your credit/debit card from your account and buy vouchers instead. And, finally, if all goes wrong and you’ve been stung by a massive charge due to the kids, do call up and explain. Often they’ll wipe it on a ‘one strike and you’re out’ policy—as they did for the rugby-playing dad. 2. AVOID PAYING £150 A MONTH FOR BUSTING YOUR OVERDRAFT Break your overdraft limit by even £1 and you can face charges up to £5 a day. It’s very easy to get caught out, but extremely costly, so ensure you stay in the black. If you have been caught with bank charges, many of you will remember a few 10 10
TICKHILL TODAY
Bill Shock years ago I was urging people to reclaim them. Some got thousands back. While a decision in the Courts put an end to that, rumours of the death of bank charges reclaiming have been greatly exaggerated. If you’ve had charges and they’ve put in financial hardship, you may be able to reclaim. Full, step-by-step help at www. moneysacvingexpert.com/bankcharges. 3. BEWARE TRAPS OFFERING £15 OFF YOUR NEXT PURCHASE WITH AN ONLINE DISCOUNT Shockingly, even sites like The Trainline and Ticketmaster have reportedly made money by allowing membership clubs like Shopper Discounts to push these offers once you’ve bought stuff. Many have been caught out, as MoneySavingExpert.com forum user wrote: Bought a train ticket and must have clicked a link, as for two years Shopper Discounts has been taking £10/mth from my account. I did not know anything about this and am totally gutted.” 4. BEWARE OF DEBIT CARD STEALTH CHARGES WHEN ABROAD. Santander, NatWest, RBS, Halifax, Lloyds all add up to £1.50 every time you use them to spend on them overseas. AVOID! Instead, get a specialist overseas credit card— Halifax Clarity, Post Office, Saga (over 50s) and for Nationwide account holders ONLY, its select card. These have no spending charge, low ATM fees and crucially they don’t ‘load’ the exchange rate, meaning near perfect rates worldwide. Full help and full card-by-card breakdown at www. moneysavingexpert.com/travelcards. 5. WATCH TV ONLINE? DON’T PAY A HIDDEN £5 PER FILM Web players now pump out programmes with image quality rivalling Sky and Virgin. Yet this hoovers up data and many broadband packages have data limits. You can be charged up to £5 per 5GB (about two HD films) if you’re over your limit. Consider an unlimited package, normally only a couple of quid a month more expensive. 6. “I GOT A £3,000 HOLIDAY MOBILE DATA BILL.” Many smartphone apps routinely
check for updates and downloads in the background and this can lead to monster fees when abroad. Watching TV, videos or streaming music is worse. Prices aren’t regulated outside Europe, so turn 3G off. One of my users got stung with a £3,000 bill just for a few emails and maps on a trip to India and the USA and leaving their data roaming on whilst not using it. 7. DON’T ‘NEARLY’ REPAY CARDS IN FULL—YOU’LL GET AN UNEXPECTED SLAP… Repay credit cards in full and you usually don’t pay any interest. Yet if you owe £5,000 and repay £4,999 many cards will still charge you that month’s interest on the whole £5,000. 8. BEWARE OF MOBILE VOICEMAIL WHICH CAN BE 35P A MINUTE Voicemail isn’t always free. Many firms charge a hideous 35p a minute if you call it when you’ve used your inclusive minutes (or from abroad). It’s best to keep track of your spending, or maybe turn it off whilst you’re on holiday. 9. FIXED YOUR ENERGY PRICE? WATCH FOR PRICEY ‘GO-TO’ TARIFFS. Once a fixed energy tariff ends, you slide onto providers’ uncompetitive standard tariffs—up to £260/year more than the cheapest. So diarise when it ends and switch again or join my new Cheap Energy Club at www.moneysavingexpert.com/ CheapEnegryClub which will do it for you. 10. HAVE DEBTS WHERE YOU BANK OR SAVE? BEWARE… If you have credit cards, loans or mortgages at the SAME bank where you save then beware. Banks can legally ‘set off’ or use your cash to repay your debts without asking you. They tend to do it if you’re struggling to repay. This has cancelled Christmases and left many in misery. One proud dad told me he paid £12,000 to his daughters account for her big day. The bank used £6,000 of it to pay off her credit card debt even through there was a repayment plan in place. It’s legal. If you’re at risk, the golden rule is to separate them and use different financial institutions to save and to borrow.

Do you need advice about a family problem, but worrying about the cost? You may be pleasantly surprised by how we can help The end of a marriage is always a traumatic time, regardless of the reasons for the breakdown. It can help enormously if you have clear and sympathetic advice at the outset from an experienced family lawyer. At Jones & Co our specialist family lawyers can advise as to the various different ways to approach sorting out the arrangements for your children. We will advise you on the sort of financial settlement you can expect to receive following your divorce so that you can make plans for the future.
For more information or to arrange an appointment
We can also offer specialist advice on separation for couples who have been cohabiting, and in relation to agreements for those who plan to cohabit or to marry. We understand that costs are a significant concern and at the outset we will assess with you whether our fixed fee service would be suitable for you. If so, we will agree with you what work is needed, how much it is going to cost and how those costs will be paid. Even if a fixed fee arrangement is not appropriate for your case, we will give you a realistic estimate of costs at the outset. This estimate will be kept under regular review, and you will be notified in advance of any change in the estimate. If you are on a low income or certain benefits, you may be exempt from all or part of any court fees payable. For some family problems involving domestic violence or social services involvement with children, legal aid is still available.

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”
APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.
“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.
Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

community Brownies will be 100 years old next year and is celebrating the occasion with a Big Brownie Birthday. There will be lots of events nationally, regionally and locally and Tickhill Brownies are hoping to take part in some of them. However, as we now have three qualified leaders in Tickhill we are hoping to celebrate the birthday in a big way ourselves. We will be organising a weekend trip to Disneyland Paris. There is lots of help to be had within Girlguiding to help us organise the trip and we would use a specialist organisation such as Venture Abroad to plan the event. As you will appreciate such an event is going to be expensive so we will be holding various fund raising events in the next few months to offset the cost to parents and to keep that cost as low as possible. Our gala float this year starts our countdown to the birthday celebrations, the brownies are very excited about a possible trip to Disneyland but they appreciate that we have a lot of fund raising to do before it can happen. Over the years Tickhill Brownies have been on lots of trips, we have been to London on a coach and slept at Guiding HQ, been on the London Eye
and watched the Changing of the Guard. We have been to Harewood House to celebrate the 100th birthday of Girlguiding and had a sleepover in tents. We have spent a week in North Yorkshire and visited Pickering and been on the North Yorks Moors Railway. We have had a sleepover at Magna Science Museum
Wadworth Brownies
Wadworth Brownies are wanting to boost their membership. We have new leaders who are hoping to expand the unit. We are all very experienced within Girl Guiding and want to pass our enthusiasm on.
Wadworth Brownies have been running since 1969 and we hope to continue well into the future. 2014

Firstly can i apologise to two people who work tirelessly for the Tara and all its activities. shirley Chapman and Cynthia Watson sat outside the Community Centre on Castle Close for 6-7 hours on scarecrow Festival day selling raffle tickets and Tombola tickets in aid of Marie Curie. They made a great deal of money and in fact i can update on the amount made it was £400. Our AGM was on the 29th June and was well attended. The Committee was elected once more with the addition of Carol Robinson. Our books were taken for audit by SLHD and have subsequently been signed off and we are ready for our new Treasurer Brenda Parkin. Ann Turner our Chair is currently organising a Trip to Bridlington in July and we will also be doing our Trip to Chatsworth House at the end of November Our next meeting is on Castle close on the last Wednesday in July. Please feel free to come along. T

community Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice has received a £5,000 grant from the santander Foundation to fund a much needed piece of equipment. The grant was provided via the Foundation’s Community Plus initiative which provides grants of up to £5,000 for projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities. The scheme is open to small local charities or local projects of national charities with funding available to cover salaries, equipment or materials. Due to the complex medical needs of lots of the children at the hospice, most are unable to sit in their wheelchairs or other forms of seating for long periods and need a change of position. This would mean that the children would have to stay on their beds in their rooms for long periods of time. The Acheeva bed however, enables the children to stay in bed but to be in a well-supported lying position and still be able to move around, therefore enabling the

Michelle Newton at Santander’s Tickhill branch said: “Community Plus allows our staff and customers to nominate local charities that are most in need of assistance. We are delighted to be supporting Bluebell Wood and hope the donation makes a real difference to local people.” T

The flat is literally coated in crystalline blue, through the act of pumping in 75,000 litres of copper sulphate solution and the crystals grew and coated everything. ACE subsequently bought the work – the flat was removed from the building ( over 31 tonnes of concrete and steel) – that I would have liked to have seen - and shipped up to the Yorkshire Sculpture Par where a new gallery has been built to house 24 24

The Spice of Life spices have been used since 50,000 BC with the spice trade developing around 20000 BC so this is by no means a modern discovery.
A spice is defined as “a dried fruit, root, seed, bark or vegetative substance” with its primary use being colouring and flavouring food. This distinguishes spices from herbs which are leafy parts of plants but which are also used for flavouring and sometimes garnishing. Because of their incredible properties which kill micro-organisms or indeed inhibits their growth, many spices are commonly used in warmer climates and are particularly prominent in meat dishes to help prolong the life of the food. India is by far the biggest producer of spices in the world, producing some ten times more than the next. Because pepper is a spice, it is a misconception that salt is also categorized in this way. It is, in fact, a mineral.

BUS News
Sunday service was withdrawn for a while, but with demands from DHL and Hesley, the bus was back, for the shift patterns. This started out as a works service, and still is to a degree, but it is now a fully accessible all passenger bus service. This year the 10 year anniversary day falls on a Sunday (28.07.13), and service 205 operates on this day, and actually provides the first services out of Tickhill to Doncaster. 0600 and 0804. Please if you can, support the bus when you can. I have been informed by personal connected with Nottinghamshire County Council, that my suggestion
Eat In or Take Away
of the Phon-a-bus service coming to serve Tickhill, is to be considered in January 2014. I must stress this is only at the early stage, and still needs approval from certain authorities. The phon-a-bus operates in Misson, currently service 27a, and serves Bawtry, Everton, and Mattersey, and only runs when pre-booked, which can be done on the day, or up to a week in advance. This works very well, and operates between 0630-1830 Monday to Saturday at frequent booked intervals. This service they may extend to serve Tickhill and Maltby, to help with the Maltby/Bawtry Link. In my opinion this is the way forward. A bus only when booked. For use by all.

i am a very loving girl that just wants to be by my owners side all the time, which is something i need a little help with as i have separation issues and don’t like to be left, i am also good with other dogs and am used to living with them. I may not be a puppy anymore but I am still always on the go, so need a home that will provide me with a lot of mental and physical stimulation. I have done agility training in the past and absolutely loved it so I would love to carry something like this on in my new home. If you think you have room in your home for a spirited little dog like me then please don’t hesitate to talk to one of my carers. T

on the 11th June 2013 Tickhill st Mary’s embarked on a quest to conquer edlington HillTop, Warmsworth, estfeld, Wadworth and edlington victoria in the cricket tournament of the year! The A team and the B team got off to a flying start winning the first games easily. After that the B team won every single match. The A team also played well, winning all games apart from the game against Warmsworth.
How’s that!
We all sat nervously as the runs were counted for the A league. First was Warmsworth, second was St Marys. In the B league first was St Marys, second was Warmsworth. As they announced the overall winners we were biting our nails, but then we went crazy. St Marys had won by 2 runs. We were the champions of the Warmsworth Cricket Tournament 2013.

Goodbye to Mrs Boaler
as many of you will know, after 13 years as our Headteacher Mrs Boaler will be retiring this summer.
approx. 3.30 and 4.30pm (weather permitting) bring your own picnic or purchase a cake from the PTA’s cake stall! Everyone is welcome.
On Wednesday 17th July, pupils, parents and staff will be joining together in a picnic on our school field after our Sports Day, and we would like to invite previous pupils and their parents and any other members of the community who would like to join us to take part in this celebratory send off as we wish Mrs Boaler well in her retirement. The picnic will take place between
I am sure that the whole community will join us in wishing Mrs Boaler a long, happy and healthy retirement.

Should bad weather cause us a problem, or should you not be able to make it, then Mrs Boaler will also be available to meet with visitors during the morning of her last school day – on Friday 19th July, and you are welcome to call into school then to see her.
Whitby Trip on 12th June 2013 the adventure began. The coach was loaded, seats chosen, and off we went! After a brief stop in Pickering we arrived in Goathland, the beautiful village famous for its Heartbeat connection. We walked down many steps to visit Mallyan Spout (a stunning waterfall!). Then we went to St Mary’s Church to count the mice carved into the woodwork… there were eight and a half!! After lunch we travelled to Sandsend and walked into Whitby, arriving near the Whale bones! We then climbed back into the coach and travelled the short distance to the youth hostel where we were going to stay. The hostel was very comfortable and the food was delicious. Thursday 13th June was spent in Robin Hoods Bay completing the town trail and doing some wonderful beach combing. The day finished with a walk to Boggle Hole which was VERY wet! It rained and rained… And rained. Our final day was spent doing a town trail around Whitby which included a visit to the famous Lucky Duck shop! Not forgetting the ice-creams and tasty lunch near the Whale bones. As we travelled home we called at Pickering castle and had a lovely visit. We arrived back in Tickhill after a fantastic 3 days.
WeLL doNe Year 5!

Patagonian proverbs
it is not well known here in europe that Patagonia in south america has a rich tradition of wise sayings and enigmatic quotations. readers may be interested to see some of these in order to make up their own minds about their value. some of the sayings are quite short and in the form of aphorisms or proverbs. An editor is one who surveys the news, sorts the wheat from the chaff and prints the chaff. To give up smoking, drinking and sex you don’t actually live longer; it just seems longer. Always go to people’s funerals otherwise they won’t go to yours. At the end of the orchestral concert the man who acknowledges the applause is the only one on the platform who hasn’t played a note of music. Millions long for immortality who don’t know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon. If smoking is so harmful how can it cure kippers? I am not absent minded but just present minded somewhere else. 36 36

Time is Nature’s way of stopping things from all happening at once. Politicians are just like nappies; they need to be changed often - and for the same reason. To build is to be robbed. Men are like fires. If you don’t feed them they go out. It is no accident that the symbol of a bishop is a crook and the sign of an archbishop is a double cross. Anyone who has a secret should not only hide it but hide that they have it to hide. A windbreak has nothing to do with breaking wind. A diplomat is a man who always remembers a woman’s birthday but never remembers her age. When a man retires and time is no longer of urgent importance, his colleagues present him with a clock. If work were really such a good thing, then the rich would have found a way to keep it for themselves. Do not burn your ship to get rid of the cockroaches.
a lot of sense comes out of Patagonia! Philip Mottram T

Maypole Celebrations A year 6 treasure
on the 6th of June 2013 the Year 6 pupils of Wadworth Primary school got dressed up in their posh suits and frocks to attend the special and unique Maypole ceremony, the highlight of which is the crowning of a new May Queen. The celebrations also included live entertainment including dances from the rest of the school.
As the May Queen and Chief Herald, (Alison and Tom) we were crowned by the previous May Queen and Chief Herald, Megan and Finlay, and then thanked them for attending this special celebration. We then walked around the Maypole before sitting down to watch Years 1,2,3,4 and 5 perform for our liking. The Chief Herald posed for many photos with the May Queen, also two with the famous Olympic torch. The few weeks before the maypole in the Year 6 classroom was all talk about the dances and about the things that were to be worn for the huge celebration. All the girls boarded the tractor, looking lovely in their ivory/ cream dresses and ribbon hearts, and the May Queen in her cyan/ light blue dress, with her cream and purple glitter bouquet. As a Wadworth tradition, the girls sat in the trailer and Mr. Slack drove them around the village on this beautiful and memorymaking day, with the Year 6 boys looking handsome in their smart suits and with their cream ribbon staffs, and the Chief Herald in his fancier suit and with his patterned staff decorated with blue ribbon, following close behind. The rest of the school quickly followed going from Reception up to Year 5. When the tractor arrived back at the school, the girls climbed off and walked through to the Year 2/Year 4 cloakroom, patiently waiting for the other Year groups and their friends and family to gather in their spaces around 38 38

the Maypole. With great atmosphere, the Year 6 boys walked through the double doors and lined up in order, and raised their staffs in appreciation of the girls. The May Queen walked majestically through the arch that had been formed, with the rest of the girls following behind. When all of the girls had come through, the boys brought down their staffs and re-joined their partners, the May Queen and Chief Herald at the front. We were crowned the new May Queen and Chief Herald, and walked around the Maypole 2 ½ times, showing off our beautiful outfits that people had worked so hard to accomplish. All of the dances performed were fantastic, and the hard work had really paid off. When all the dances had finished, and the special Year 5 plaiting of the ribbons was complete, the school councillors came forward and counted down from 10, along with the rest of the school and audience until they released the huge net containing a vast amount of blue and yellow balloons for the annual balloon race. Once the celebrations had finished, the pupils went to their different classes to sell their products for Enterprise. T To advertise CALL 01302 744278 | www.facebook.com/todaymags

Keep on Running at Estfeld Congratulations to our cross country team who competed at the doncaster Primary school’s Cross Country Competition at Hill House school in May. The team were placed fourth in a very strong field. This is the highest position that school has finished to date. it really is a team event and the pupils worked very well together. Our U9 boys’ team won their event and are the proud possessors of the U9 boys’ trophy. They are the first Estfeld team to win a team trophy since the competition began. There were outstanding individual performances from Harry Lee of Class 4 who came third in the U9 boys’ race and Lucy Gratton of Class 5 who came fifth in the U11 girls’ race. Well done to all of the teams, pictured. We are very proud of you all.

Wadworth Village re-enacts Coronation 60 yrs after original Wadworth, st John the Baptist church was full to see a reenactment of the coronation service, 60 years after the original event. Local children played the parts of dignitaries and the Bishop doncaster came to do the role of archbishop of Canterbury. Trumpet fanfares were played by david root and the organ by Janet skinner. soloist was Jane Price. Bishop Peter preached about the rich christian symbolism within the coronation service. Over a thousand people then attended the Wadworth Gala which followed the service on the Cricket

Tickhill Cricket Club as the season approaches the half way stage, things are looking healthy down at the Cricket Club. The first XI with Ashley Fiddler as skipper, are handily placed in third position in Division 1 of the South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League and we are optimistic that we can press on in the second half of the season and gain promotion to the Premier Division. Australian Mitchell Phelps is proving a huge success and is currently the leading wicket taker in all 5 divisions. The second XI, with Paul Sheperd leading from the front, made a great start in Division 3 although a minor
slump has just been arrested with a crushing ten wicket victory over Bradfield and hopes are high that they can push on to gain promotion after just 2 seasons at this level. Even better are the third XI who gained promotion last year and as we go to press are now second in Division 2 of the Barnsley League. Skipper Martin Court has set his stall out to blood youngsters from our successful junior section, who mixed with a few experienced cricketers, are proving that the future of the Club is in safe hands. Why not come down and have a look? T

Garden View
Take a Break as i take a break from the heat of the mid day sun perched under the shade of a Banyan tree, i am staggered by its beauty and the clever way it has adapted to colonising and ‘getting around’. The large structures which develop from the underside of the 20 foot high branches head south and take root into the dry dusty soil as they hit the ground. With a record high temperature of 100 (f) and only 30 inches of water per year these are pretty hostile conditions - you may have noticed, i am not in the UK! An 11 hour flight will transport you to Key West, Florida where the views are simply breathtaking and although some locals claim you can almost see Cuba (at a mere 90 miles out to sea?) I found some of the best views had no distance at all. For me the most stunning were the small, intimate courtyards created to the front and rear sides of the colonial houses. These beautiful little oases in the town provide not only
a welcoming entrance, but also a cool shady place, where the several layers of plants seem at home. Although none of them indigenous to the area (due to the lack of soil on the island) they grow happily together and have done for years mainly thanks to the daily irrigation! The plants are there for one reason only, to provide much needed shade from the sun. The plant life is diverse due to this being the only frost free place in the USA and to me, looks like a scene from my local garden centres houseplant department. Ficus trees and Coconut palms provide shade for less sun loving ferns. All tropical and all enjoying the high humidity (so that’s why the tips of my parlour palm always go brown! As I sit in the garden located at the rear of the oldest house on the island a small lizard drinks from what’s left

New Audi A3 By Tim Barnes-Clay aUdi Has made a breakthrough in premium compact hatchback quality and capability with the all-new a3. Redesigned from the ground up following the principles of ‘Audi ultra’ lightweight construction, the German motor tips the scales an impressive 80 kg lighter on average than its forerunner. The same meticulous pursuit of progress is evident in the sophisticated cabin, which genuinely breaks new ground in the class with standards of materials, workmanship and ergonomics that indisputably push the boundaries at this level. British Audi A3 models have launched with a choice of three specification options – SE, Sport and S line - all of which are extraordinarily well appointed. The Sport model, on test here, sits on beefy 17 inch alloy wheels and features the ‘Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system’. This enables you to choose from five modes which prescribe the car’s driving characteristics – Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Efficiency and Individual. They influence the weighting of the steering, the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal, the shift points of the S-tronic transmission, if fitted, and the parameters used by the 62 62

optional adaptive cruise control system. Additional Sport features include a revitalizing two-zone climate control, sports seats, sports steering wheel and aluminium detailing inside and out. On the move, the A3 Sport oilburner, although perched on firm and athletic springs, is not uncomfortable and it sticks to some of England’s more twisty roads like a limpet. There is plenty of room for you and your passenger in the front, although your friends in the rear seats might find it hard to stretch their legs out. That said, all the seats are supportive and the 2.0-litre 150 TDI lump allows you to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 8.6 seconds. But the car doesn’t stop there; where legal the needle will spin way up the dial to 134 mph. The rapid acceleration is made all the more easy to achieve thanks to the all-new A3’s slick six-speed manual gearbox. Not only is this first-class hatchback’s turbo diesel engine quick, it is also highly fuel efficient. Engine start-stop technology and energy recuperation systems enable the A3 2.0 TDI Sport to achieve up to 68.9 mpg – and this is the selling point. Yes, the Audi is quick, comfortable and stylish – but, more importantly, it will keep you from frequently forking out at the pumps.

Jazzing it up The May concert of Tickhill Music society was the last of the current season, having been postponed from January when bad weather required a cancellation. in continuation of the society’s policy for musical variety, entertainment was provided by the Mark ellis Quartet - saxophone, piano, bass and percussion. To create the right informal atmosphere the hall was arranged with separate tables, with nibbles and drinks for refreshment. The four talented musicians, all with impressive reputations, produced an evening to stir the pulses and set the toes tapping. In keeping with well-established jazz traditions the presentation of the tune was followed by each performer having a solo spot of his own to explore the possibilities of the basic theme. There was a seasonal flavour to the first half with items like ‘Autumn Leaves’ and ‘Summertime’. The saxophone of Mark Ellis took the lead with each of the other players having their chance

to develop the theme with variations. There were some sparkling solos from each of the players, with the piano being particularly inventive. The second half began with an ear-
tingling demonstration of virtuoso drumming and included some novel jazz variations on ‘These are some of my favourite things’. Mark Ellis told the audience that they welcomed the opportunity to play to people who had come to listen, in contrast to so many of their engagements when they were there just to provide background music to events such as wedding parties. This was a highly entertaining evening much enjoyed by a large appreciative audience. aGL. T

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - JULY 2013
July is now upon us and it will soon be the end of the academic year. Let us hope it turns into a long hot summer when we can use the recreation Ground and its facilities. As some of you will know, and are hopefully enjoying, there is now tennis coaching available at the Pavilion tennis courts. It is run on a Tuesday evening and seems to be going very well. Please pop along if you feel inclined and join the club! I am now in receipt of the dates for our Summer Activities at the sports Pavilion Tithes lane area as follows: 23rd and 25th July, followed by 6th 8th 13th 15th 20th and 22nd August all at 1pm until 3pm. It is hoped the activities will be on the recreation ground but if inclement weather prevails we should be able to make provision for indoor activities. I have spoken briefly in a prior edition of Tickhill Today that there will be an introduction of a Young Persons of the Year Award. I can confirm that the trophy has been donated and at the beginning of the next academic year, I will be making arrangements with both heads of schools in Tickhill for nominations. It is intended for the award to be presented to a child between the ages of 5-11 years who lives in Tickhill who has made efforts (No specific field), above and beyond expected of their age. There will hopefully be a small bursary too, and if anyone would like to make a donation towards the bursary then please do so through me, the clerk, and it will go into a fund held separately: cheques should of course be made payable to Tickhill Town Council. It is hoped that this will inspire a young person for the future. As this is the first year for it to run it is not certain if the process of selection will be the same in the following years and it could change. During the last few months I have 66 66

endured many complaints about dog foul. This seems particularly bad on the motor way bridge at the end of Common Lane. If you have a dog, please be responsible owners and clear up after them. I have informed D.M.B.C. and it is their intention to start issuing fixed penalty notices to persons caught failing to clear up after their dogs either on the aforesaid site or any other site in Tickhill. Also, I have had numerous complaints about parking on grass verges, this too has been reported to D.M.B.C. and enforcement will again be issuing fixed penalty notices for anyone found to be obstructing the rights of pedestrians on the footpaths. Parking outside schools has raised its head again in the complaints department and this too will be dealt with by enforcement from D.M.B.C. issuing fixed penalty notices. Anyone wishing to report issues should do by contacting D.M.B.C. directly on 01302 736000 or by logging on to D.M.B.C.’s website and then using the customer services facility. Neighbourhood plan consultation at Tickhill Gala our Neighbourhood Plan is progressing well. The next public consultation will take place at the Tickhill Gala on saturday 6 July. Come and see us in our gazebo! We will have on show the latest version of the draft policies for the Plan based on what you said in the earlier consultations. Below are some of the issues you raised – which will form the basis of policies or Town Council proposals or both. Some are being worked on already. • Keep Tickhill at its present size • Conserve and enhance our heritage and history • Support our town centre shops and trade • Cut down through traffic (Westgate, Castlegate, Market Place and Sunderland Street), especially heavy goods vehicles • Make life safer for pedestrians with new crossing points on main roads and 20mph speed limit in residential areas • Improve access for those with limited mobility • Demand for public toilets • Improve recreational facilities for young people • Keep the Green Belt intact • Tackle dog fouling, litter and fly-tipping • Take action to minimise the risk of flooding There is, of course, much more than this but it will give you a flavour. Whether you agree or disagree, come along and tell us.
Let us know what we have missed. Come and discuss solutions to the problems with us. We look forward to meeting many of you at the Gala. The draft of the Neighbourhood Plan will shortly be available on the Tickhill Town Council website for you to peruse at your leisure and we will have an e mail address for you to use. In the meantime comments can be left with any member of the Town Council. John Hoare. T

in the May issue i said that richard of York was King richard iii whose remains have recently been dug up in a Leicester car park. i was wrong and must apologise. in fact richard, duke of York about whom rhil Judkins spoke at our May meeting was the father of King richard iii. His connections with doncaster were somewhat tenuous but he is popularly believed to be the man who gave rise to the phrase “richard of York Gave Battle in vain” a mnemonic many of us use to remember the colours of the rainbow. Paula has put together on the opposite page a collection of photographs of past galas which she has obtained from various sources. In particular we hope they have brilliant weather on July 6th to compensate for last year’s downpour! Following the success of last year’s Tickhill Local History Fair run in conjunction with the Library Service we will be holding another fair for Saturday July 27th this year. It will be in Tickhill Library between 10.00am
Tickhill & District LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY and 3.00pm and will feature new material on Tickhill Schools and other items of local interest. In response to popular demand we will also be showing the archive film footage on Tickhill which we showed last year. The event will be designed for all the family so do come along and enjoy yourselves whilst learning a little about the town in which you live. As usual the meeting will be in The Methodist Schoolroom starting at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) and visitors will be welcome. T

Year 11 students and their parents took part in an English workshop to help get them ready for their GCSE examination. Nearly one hundred people were in attendance as guest speaker, Martin Mullane, entertained and educated students and parents alike. Everyone was enthused by Martin's simple and effective revision techniques, such as analysing junk mail and using magazine articles. "That was fantastic - the most useful hour I've spent all year." said one parent. Congratulations to Gold medal winner, Adam Whitehouse, Silver medallists Abbey Boyle, Daniel Bell, Caitlin Whitemore & Lucy Jackson & Georgia Gray, a Bronze medallist in the Intermediate Maths Challenge 2013. Adam qualified for the Maclaurin Olympiad as a Top 500 competitor in the UK and has been invited to the Balliol College, University of Oxford, Summer School.
Our new website address is www.stwcc.co.uk Take a look! The college’s choir, made up of staff and students, were recently asked to sing in a “Last Night of the Proms” style concert at Doncaster Minster. The evening was a resounding success and the choir has now been invited to perform in a local charity concert. Good luck to Josh Foltyn who is in the senior team of the Doncaster School’s Rowing Association and currently training to take part in the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta!!!
