the February edition W elcomeoftoTICKHILL TODAY TODAY. Another month has gone by and another magazine has been put together. Once again we welcome several new advertisers as well as some returning ones. It has been a very tight squeeze to fit everything in, but I hope that I haven’t missed anything. Unfortunately, I have had some considerable problems with my email service this month which has resulted in emails not getting to me. I am really sorry if you have sent me something for inclusion and it is not here. The next edition will be delivered to you from 26th February. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included in it is with me by Friday 11th February. I will acknowledge receipt of anything emailed to me, so that you know it has been received safely.

Scarecrow Festival
Hundreds of folk enjoyed walking around Tickhill to see the Scarecrows last year. This year the event will be over 2 days - the Bank Holiday weekend Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May. Entry forms for taking part in the making of the scarecrows will be available from KSM card shop from early February. The final date for return of these is 21st March please. Anyone may take part - we may request yours to be sited in one of the central spots of the village - we don’t want the route to be too lengthy! There was lots of creativity and fun last year—I sense we will have some jolly good ideas this year too. John Marsden 744142 (Chair of Tickhill Together)

The Parish Room continues to be busy with regular bookings and parties booked for both children and adults. Our Hall seems to lend itself beautifully to any and every occasion! Future new regular bookings are Rebecca with Baby Massage and Baby Yoga - unfortunately Rebecca wasn't able to start her classes in January due a bad dose of the flu. Feel free to come along to the free party night to see what's its all about, and maybe have a go yourself. If you want to talk about booking the Parish Room for any functions, either regular or one -off, please ring me on 07840 419763, or pop in for a coffee on a Saturday morning between 10 and 12. Our booking prices remain the same in 2011, we haven't increased our prices since we re-opened in 2008, and not many people can say that these days! Janice Birkinshaw

What is Zumba? Are you ready to party yourself into shape? Are you fed up with exercise that is dull and feels too much like hard work? Then the new Zumba craze could be exactly what you are looking for. The new classes are designed to be exhilarating yet easy to follow. The moves are Latininspired so there is lots of hip wiggling and with regular attendance you will witness your body tone and re-shape, especially around the waist area. Best of all, you’ll be having such a blast you won’t realise you are exercising! You’ll also find you are having a lot of fun because the music is explosive - a blend of international music rhythms which motivate you to move and creates a party like atmosphere. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a dance or fitness background as the atmosphere is nonintimidating and there really are no “wrong” moves. You won’t be shouted at in boot-camp style (when did you last see someone shouting instructions over a head mic at a party?) and you will find the class has a mix of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body using the most effective interval training methods which translate to high calorific expenditure. Along with a sensible well-balanced nutrition, you can expect to loose excess pounds and keep them off. Not only will your fitness improve, you will find yourself passionate about the dances and the motivating music as well as enjoying the buzz of the happy exercise hormones!
What you should wear/ bring to a Zumba class: Your feet need to slide and turn easily so don’t wear running shoes with a heavy tread as these may “stick” to the floor. However your shoes need to be supportive enough to allow side to side movements which are common in Latin Dancing. Bring a bottle of water, preferably with a sports stopper so you can ‘swig’ your drink quickly throughout the class. It can be handy to have a sweat towel or sweat band on your wrist for when you get hot! Wear clothes that you would wear to an aerobics class.
Why Deborah’s class in Tickhill? Philip Mottram urged us in last month’s ‘Tickhill Today’ to support local traders so that in times of snowy crisis we are well provided for. Deborah supports his call wholeheartedly and believes that having local facilities for keeping fit means we don’t have to miss out on our exercise when the weather hits and we can build a close community, committed to staying young and healthy. When the Zumba classes that Deborah’s was attending were interrupted by the weather, she was inspired to train up to bring her favourite classes to her own village. She is an enthusiastic 47 year old who last year lost 5 stone through her Zumba classes, barefoot running and dog walking as well as healthy eating. She has previously taught Modern Jive and Lindy Hop and as a retired Senior Lecturer in Psychology she is just the ticket for helping you stay motivated and on track.
Deborah recognises that it is useful to be able to “try before you buy” which is why she decided to have a FREE Launch Party to introduce you all to the Zumba fitness experience on 11th February from 6.30pm at the Parish Room. Classes will be every Tuesday morning at 9.30am in the Methodist Schoolroom and every Friday evening at 6.30pm in the Parish Room. You can call Deborah on 07912 215246 or email her zumbadoncaster@gmail.com and check out www.zumbadoncaster.co.uk for info on classes

Tickhill St Mary’s C of E Primary and Nursery School
Music at school Apart from the obvious pleasure of learning to play an instrument, research has now established that it makes you smarter! The act of learning to read music and playing an instrument creates new pathways in the brain increasing intelligence. The children at St Mary’s are offered the opportunity to audition to learn to play either a string instrument such as the violin or viola or a brass instrument such as the trumpet or cornet. This is a commitment on the children’s part making sure that they remember to bring their instrument to lessons in school and practising at home, but the joy of such a skill will hopefully stay with them for the whole of their life not to mention the extra benefit it brings in making them smarter! Our Y5 children are fortunate to benefit from the musicality and kindness of Mr Marsden, organist at St Mary’s, who comes in once a week to sing with the children. They enjoy the opportunity to sing, but they will also be learning at the same time. Our thanks to Mr Marsden who gives up his time for the benefit of the children. Mr Marsden is also leading a bell ringing group in our school. Katarina Martin School Secretary

In December on Super Learning Day Y10 teams were challenged to make GEODESIC domes. This challenge required both mathematical and technical skills. (A geodesic dome is a spherical or partial-spherical shell structure or lattice shell based on a network of great circles lying on the surface of a sphere. The geodesics intersect to form triangular elements that have local triangular rigidity and also distribute the stress across the entire structure.)
The event was organised under the STEM banner (science, technology, engineering and maths). It was presented by EXCITEC from Imperial University –a prestigious University for Maths and the Sciences. The EXCITEX providers said the students participated very well and managed to achieve the full sphere. With limited time available it is rare for students to complete full sphere construction. They also added it was their exceptional team work that made this possible.

TIME TO CHANGE? The current buzz words from the Coalition Government are ‘The Big Society’. This is a comfortable cloak for the largely Conservative plans to reduce the power of the state, to curb the influence of Local Authorities, to scrap a whole host of regulations and Quangos, and to eliminate or reduce many established organisations. These drastic measures are justified on the grounds of ‘the current economic climate’ and the ‘need to reduce the deficit’. This parliament is to run for five years and so we are all going to have to adjust to a new situation where Local Authority services we have been used to will be drastically reduced or eliminated. For example, the excellent service given by the Neighbourhood Watch team is bound to be curtailed when a severely reduced staff will have to cover much larger areas. In any case the team usually has to refer problems to appropriate DMBC Departments who will have smaller budgets and fewer staff. Tickhill has two choices: 1. Resign ourselves to the deteriorating situation and accept that things are bound to get worse (no doubt with a lot of angry grumbling and futile moaning). Or 2. See this as a challenging opportunity to start doing more for ourselves to try to keep Tickhill a pleasant place to live in. Take the recent heavy snowstorm which caused great problems for Tickhill. Several people who have lived in Tickhill all their lives report that under the Tickhill Urban District Council, pre-1974, the man employed to cut grass would fit an attachment to his grass cutting machine and proceeded to clear pavements in the town. A number of local farmers had snow plough attachments which they would fit to tractors and work to clear the roads. With no one else to help, the community helped themselves. During the recent snowfall several public spirited individuals with pride in the town and concern for others got out there and cleared snow for neighbours and even cleared stretches of public footpaths. That is the spirit which could be developed. To have pavements cleared of snow would be of huge benefit to the town, local traders and many individuals. Should the Council purchase a modern machine for pavement clearing and employ someone to operate it? Would residents accept a small rise to the local precept element of their Council Tax to pay for such a service? It seems that other communities in the Borough pay appreciably more per household than we do in Tickhill. Quite a modest increase in the precept would produce significant income to be spent in making residents’ lives better and maintaining the quality of the town’s amenities. Other, smaller, communities manage to employ a Handyman for a few hours a week to help with, say, litter picking or cutting back intrusive vegetation. Why can’t Tickhill? The time has come for a Working Party to be formed to explore all the options and their cost implications and make recommendations to the Town Council. There are to be new elections for the Town Council in May and there are currently some vacancies because two long-serving Councillors (W. Higgins and E. Baldwin) have resigned Are there individuals willing to stand for election, to bring fresh thinking and help Tickhill develop its own self-help Big Society? Philip Mottram
CHANGE FOR THE BETTER In response to Philip Mottram’s article ‘Think Ahead’ in the January issue of Tickhill Today, I would like to assure him that at least one Tickhill resident has already made the ‘big switch‘ from supermarket to local shops. Housebound due to the December snowfall, I was dependent upon very kind neighbours who made daily trips to the village shops to help me, and others, in need of basic necessities. Eventually I wrote out an order for a week’s groceries and these were delivered free to my home. This is now a weekly occurrence. After many years of lifting heavy shopping bags into a trolley, lifting them out of the trolley into the car boot and, finally, carrying them indoors there is something almost magical about having a delivery man carry the large boxes into my kitchen and all I have to do is to put the contents into cupboards etc.. I now know that, whatever the weather, I will not go hungry and, as an additional bonus, I cannot remember when I last had to fill the car up with petrol! To coin a phrase ‘EVERY LITTLE HELPS’. A satisfied customer I'm furious. At the carol service round the Buttercross on Christmas Eve there was no respect for religion. Children running around (yes I know they were excited) but there was no control from parents. As for the adults, as soon as the readings started the loud chattering began. No wonder the children were out of control - the parents were also. This should have been all to do with religion. Weren't the children taught anything as to why we were there? The Salvation Army were in good form and the loud speakers worked perfectly. Thank you to them. I'm not a religious 'nut' nor am I Scrooge, but I do think more respect should have been shown. A Slice of Local History The retirement of two long-serving members of the Town Council, Bill Higgins and Ellis Baldwin, who both have served our community in various capacities over many years and joined the Town Council in 1987, is an appropriate occasion to record some of the history of the Tickhill Residents’ Association.. The TRA started out as the Tickhill Ratepayers’ Association, back in the early 1960s (precise date currently unknown) when rates were the local form of taxation. It appears to have gone into a decline subsequently although remaining in existence. New life arose when there was a major disagreement in Tickhill about the costs and feasibility of the proposal of the then Town Council to build a community centre on the car park in St. Mary’s Road. At a public meeting in October 1986, the officers of the TRA demanded a referendum of electors to determine whether the majority supported the proposal. Nothing came of this, for the TRA put up a full slate of 9 candidates for the Town Council in the following May, won every seat and dropped the community centre plan. In the following decade the Council, TRA-led, was responsible for the construction of the new sports pavilion at the recreation ground, replacing and updating the two children’s play areas and creating the multi-sports facility used for tennis and football. It also instituted the Christmas Eve carol singing around the Buttercross. The TRA too was very active at this time, organizing coach trips to the Houses of Parliament and Windsor Castle, meetings with speakers, and fighting proposed developments in the Green Belt (Apy Hill and Eastfield). In recent years, only registered party names can be put onto ballot papers, so the TRA doesn’t put up candidates any longer but we still maintain the principle of being non-party and seeking to ensure that the Town Council is independent of parties. We seek always to work with the Town Council and others such as DMBC’s Neighbourhood Management team. Members have, for example, conducted traffic censuses to check that lorry traffic to Stripe Road doesn’t come through Tickhill, and we continue to represent local views on planning applications. Theatre visits, for many years a feature of the programme, have finished but regular concerts and open meetings continue. The treasure hunt for Yorkshire Day in August and the Pancake Day contest for our two primary schools are popular recent additions to Tickhill’s calendar which seem set to continue. Over nearly 50 years the Residents’ Association has had its ups and downs but has survived to serve and represent the interests of the community. Long may this continue! John Hoare STOP PRESS Bus users have noticed that a revised timetable for Service 22 starts on January 17, in effect changing times into Doncaster during the day to 07 and 37 minutes past the hour and adding time to the journey both ways. (No change to times back from Doncaster) This is to last while major road works are done where Sandford Road joins Balby Road (including the removal of the subway and replacement with a signalled pedestrian crossing). The road works may last up to 12 weeks before normal timetable resumes. With bridge repairs, new gas pipes and improvements there will be disruption on the A630 over the next 2 years.

Property Market Comment. A belated Happy New Year to everyone. What a finish to 2010, so many buyers trying to move into their new properties with the added problem of a foot of snow! The unusually high level of pre Christmas completions was due to very strong sales in October, the highest level we have seen since September 2007. I don’t want to get over optimistic, the market certainly isn’t ‘buoyant’ and prices are still a little depressed, but there are an increasing number of buyers around, especially in the sub £250,000 price bracket. This year has also started well, several sales have already been agreed, and viewing levels are starting to increase. At present around 35% of our stock is ‘under offer’ and we are desperately in need of more properties to sell, we have buyers waiting for most property types. Providing pricing is realistic, sales can be achieved within reasonable timescales. We still mainly rely on local Tickhill people, but we have also agreed sales to people re-locating from all over the country. The lettings market continues to grow from strength to strength, although rents have stabilised (this due to a good supply) tenants are still easy to find, with most properties been let within a few weeks. Many landlords are ‘holding on’ to property hoping prices recover, my opinion is that they may be waiting a while, mainly due to lenders remaining cautious on their loan to value policies and the economic climate continuing to be fragile. For anyone considering a move this year, the first step is to have a Free Valuation, work out your finances and then decide whether the time is right. Whenever you may decide to move, you will be buying and selling in the same market conditions, so providing you have enough equity in your home now is probably as good a time as any! For more information on any aspect of the residential housing market, please don’t hesitate to drop in or call (01302) 751616. Chris Thomson (Managing Director) Robinson Hornsby Ltd)

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Bawtry Here we are in 2011 at last the snow has all but disappeared (dare I utter those words !!) Unfortunately it reeked havoc in our Sanctuary. The heavy snow buckled the sides and gates of the outside runs making it impossible to open or close gates. The snow was so heavy it came through the roof of our main storage building, so now we have no roof on this very important part of our sanctuary. It is here that dog and cat food was stored plus everything we use for all the events throughout the year, you name it and it was in that building, so everything was ruined, it will take us a long time to re build this facility. 2010 has seen us re home 160 cats and 340 dogs plus the odd rabbit. We have also dealt with dogs that have had special needs and others that needed a lot more care and attention. There was the puppy Bella that had a huge public appeal and was our TV star. Her front legs were badly deformed and she needed 3 operations with a cost of £3500 . The public were magnificent in their generosity so thank you everyone that contributed to make this lovely puppies life now worth living. She is in her forever loving home being very spoilt. Another case that horrified us was that of Kylie a small staffy that came to us via the RSPCA she had no fur on her body at all and had open gaping wounds, the poor little thing was so depressed she wouldn't even lift her head when she was approached. Apparently she had one of the worst flea allergies anyone has ever seen. Why this had not been referred to a vet goodness knows. She had to go through weeks of special treatments that were not very pleasant . But eventually life is now looking up for her. She has not yet found her forever home, but she is the most placid pleasant little dog you could ever wish to meet. She is enjoying time in the Sanctuary office being very spoilt and waiting for the right person to take her home. There are many more cases like Kylie and Bella also many kittens dumped in woods and on building sites, also cats used as footballs, we could go on forever, but we like to concentrate on the positives and when we see the end result it makes all our hard work worth while. 38| Tickhill Today
M&S have recently allowed us to carry out a bag pack in there Doncaster Store this was a huge success and raised £536. We also stood on a freezing cold Sat the weekend before Christmas in Doncaster rattling tins for our Sanctuary. Again the Doncaster public were hugely generous in their giving and we raised just over £700. So a big thank you Doncaster and district Our Charity shop in Manton is desperate for volunteers to man the shop. So if anyone has a day to spare please call us. We are also collecting cloths for re cycling, so please take all unwanted items to our Sanctuary or call us and we may be able to collect. We would like to thank all applicants that contacted us regarding the recent office position. This vacancy has now been filled, but we had such a huge response it is impossible to contact everyone directly, We are starting to organise one of our largest fund raisers for 2011 which is our Charity Ball this will be held at Ye Olde Bell Hotel Barnby Moor on 11th June. This promises to be another hugely successful event so don’t wait too long before asking for tickets. This year the ticket price will be £40 there will be a live band fabulous meal and auction. So please join us and help raise funds for this very worthy cause. Thank you everyone that has made 2010 a great year for us, particularly all staff and volunteers, fundraisers and everyone that has contributed in any way to our successful year Please call Margaret 07969203206 or the Sanctuary 01302744311 if you should require any further information about our Sanctuary.

Bluebell Wood’s Love to Bake offers you the chance to showcase your cake creations and raise money for local children. Bluebell Wood’s Love to Bake campaign starts on 14th February. The idea is simple. All you need to do is bake a cake and sell the delicious slices to your friends or colleagues. Following on from the success of last year, Love to Bake is offering people within local communities a chance to bake their tastiest creations and then sell them in order to support Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. Why not use an old family recipe or create a new signature cake? This way you can share and sell your masterpiece with your friends and relations, whilst supporting children with life limiting conditions. If you’re really proud of your end result, why not take a picture and upload it onto the Bluebell Wood baking gallery on Facebook. The image with the most ‘likes’ will receive a £20 Love2Shop voucher. If you don’t see yourself as a Master Chef but would like to get involved, the Bluebell Wood cake book which offers a variety of cake recipes can be purchased online, and in any of the six Bluebell Wood shops for just £2.50. Alternatively the book would make a nice gift for someone that likes to experiment with different recipes. The book offers an assortment of recipes, some that date back generations, including classic recipes like Parkin and delicious modern creations such as the Pina Colada Cake. Or, you can support the campaign by buying a virtual slice of cake online. During February, special cake and coffee mornings will be held by supporters, where you can purchase slices of their scrumptious creations. The proceeds will all go towards supporting families who visit the hospice. To find out the details of the your nearest coffee and cake morning, logon to our website. Just one cake sold for £1 a slice could raise enough money to help a child breathe easier with an oxygen mask. You don’t have to have culinary skills to take part and support, just the ingredients and a sprinkle of imagination. More details can be found at www.bluebellwood.org/lovetobake.php

Drama Queens in Everton For their February production the Village Players (Everton) are presenting Drama Queens, which will consist of four linked one act plays from the well known Deck Chairs series of plays by Jean McConnell. Three of the plays are comedies, one more serious; all display Jean McConnell’s keen-eyed view of human nature and the foibles and fancies of women in particular. They are full of colourful and animated characters – mostly humorous, sometimes touching, but always written with truth and compassion. The plays will be presented in the intimate atmosphere of an “in the round” setting, which works very well in Everton Village Hall, and the Players feel is particularly suited to this quartet of plays, each different, with a different cast, but to a general theme. In partnership with the new landlord of the Blacksmiths Arms, which is yards from the Village Hall, the Players will be offering the option of combined tickets for Drama Queens and a pretheatre dinner to make for a great evening out. Drama Queens will be staged in Everton Village Hall between 23rd and 26th February. Tickets are priced at £5, (£4 for students), or £17.50 (£16.50 for students) to include a pretheatre dinner at the Blacksmiths and are available from the Box Office (01777 818275) or web site (www.evplayers.org.uk). 44| Tickhill Today

Tickhill Scouts Welcome to 2011 and all that it means. We are 1 year away from our 50 th anniversary, 1 year away from the London Olympics and 1 year away from the best international camp in the UK. This year is the 25th anniversary of Beavers and they will be wearing a special anniversary badge to celebrate this milestone in the development of Scouting. Our group has got off to a good start despite several youngsters leaving due to pressure of school work. It seems such a shame that a young person cannot relax from school pressure for a couple of hours a week doing something totally different to school work. These days are only lived once and cannot be regained at a later date. Nevertheless, those that have stayed, well over 70 youngsters, have made the most of the opportunities presented to them. Along with the youngsters we have welcomed 2 more cub leaders – Damon Fisher and Carol O’ Neill – to the cub section. The pack can now grow and experience even more challenging activities. Since returning, the scouts have attended a Winter Camp at Squirrel Wood and had a taster canoeing session at St James Baths in Doncaster. The fun continues with a patrol leader training course for those who show any aptitude for such a role and a sleepover for the cubs if all the planning works out. We ended last year with an on/off carol service. With the forbearance of both Canon Taylor and John Marsden we were able to hold our carol service at fairly short notice. This was an outstanding success with all the youngsters taking a full part in the service. The high point of the night came when the Beaver Colony “sang” Kumbaya using sign language. The explorer unit had a backpacking session at TESCO and raised well over £800. Over the months I have reported on the efforts of the Phoenix Explorer Scout Unit trying to raise money for the Safe@Last charity. They eventually were able to present this charity with a cheque for over £600. Despite heavy snow and blocked roads we were fortunate enough to attend the annual carol service held in Peak Cavern, Castleton. We were amply entertained by Dronfield Brass Band who, despite the freezing conditions in the cavern, accompanied the singing with great professionalism. After the service we made our way to Mam Nick where the more hardy of our brethren ascended MamTor for the traditional investiture of a couple of the explorer scout unit. A date for your diary – the next Jumble Sale will be held on March 26th 2011.

Tickhill and District Local History Society First, an apology particularly to those readers living in Wadworth. In last month’s magazine I said that Dennis Walker’s living memory “A Wadworth Childhood” would be on our website by the time the January issue of Tickhill Today was delivered. It wasn’t. Our computer blew up shortly before Christmas in dramatic fashion with clouds of smoke and it took several weeks to get our data back on to another computer. However the article is now on the website at www.tickhillhistorysociety.org.uk Click the “Living Memories” tab at the top of the screen and then click on “Mr Dennis Walker Pt 1” from the list of names on the left of the screen. We are sure you will find the article an interesting read. Second, at our February meeting we will be having a display of archive material relating to Tickhill and surrounding areas. In addition to material from our own archives, Doncaster Family History Society, Doncaster Archives and Brian Elliott books will also be exhibiting. There will also be a running slide show featuring some of our less well publicised local photographs. Fixed photographic displays of Tickhill Brownies over the years (to celebrate the centenary of Girl Guiding) and of the Tickhill and District Male Voice Choir (to celebrate its half century) will also be included. Members and guests will be able to browse though the archive material (much of which was not displayed last year) in the Methodist Schoolroom whilst refreshments will be served throughout the evening in the Lounge. The meeting will be on Thursday 17th February between 7.15 and 9.00 pm. Finally, even we are not immune to Royal Wedding excitement. About the end of April we plan an exhibition of Tickhill wedding group photos in the entrance to the Library. A previous similar exhibition proved very popular but we know covered only a very small number of the Tickhill weddings over the years. If you have a photo of your wedding group which you think may be suitable please contact Lesley Nicholson on 01302 743528 or at the Library.

The birth of every future guide dog is an exciting event but this one is extra special In fact this guide dog will be arriving complete with two pups of her own, and she will be joining a long line of guide dogs, big and small, which have stood inside and outside shops and other public places, helping to raise funds for the charity. She may not have a name, but she’s likely to become one of the most well known and loved symbols representing Guide Dogs. Of course she’s not an actual guide dog but our brand new life size collection box! Although some of the finer details may have changed, Guide Dogs’ collection boxes remain instantly recognisable. Last year, we re-launched our counter-top collection box and since then we have been developing the new lifesized version in order to modernise the design. Collection boxes are the life blood of many charities and Guide Dogs is no exception, as a result of this new addition the charity are actively seeking volunteers to help find these dogs a home and also count the donations received and to bank it when needed. Kirstie Bower Senior District Fundraiser commented: “Guide Dogs really are very grateful to all our volunteers who help us raise these vital funds for the charity as we rely solely on donations and legacies. The guide dog service receives no funding, and if it wasn’t for the generosity of the public we wouldn’t be able to help so many people. We are currently looking for individuals that can help us whether it is finding locations to take one of our new dogs or emptying the boxes a few times a year please get in touch, we would also love to hear from any businesses that want a box (large or small), every penny counts!”
If you would like more information about this then please call District fundraiser Pam White on 07879 432181.

Tickhill Town Council Newsletter
As my first contribution to this newsletter I would like to say how proud I am to work for the Town Council and the residents of Tickhill. I would like to express my thanks to Alan Jillott, who retired as Clerk after 13 years of service to the Council. During the two month handover period he has helped me enormously. At the Mayor’s reception in December, Alan was presented with book vouchers, after donations were received from those societies and individuals he had worked with during the course of his employment. Presentations were also . made to recently retired Town Councillors Ellis Baldwin and Bill Higgins. The Town Council met on 11th January to agree its budget for 2011/12 and set the precept for this financial period. After many years of being able to keep the precept at the same level, we have now had to raise it to ensure that we have enough funds to allow us to carry out our duties. Our biggest asset, the Pavilion in Tithes Lane, is also our biggest area of expenditure but the Town Council sees both the building and sports facilities that surround it as a vital facility for the community groups that use it. Tickhill Council has also decided not to charge users of our car park in St Marys Road, this is another facility which we believe is important both to residents, shoppers and businesses alike. However, by taking this action we have no option other than to increase the amount of money raised through the precept. The increase has been kept as low as possible with the average Band D householder having to pay less than an additional 5p per week. With one of the lowest precepts, per household, in the whole of Doncaster, we believe that we offer extremely good value for money when compared to other Town/Parish Councils in the area – some of whom who charge upwards of 4-5 times more than us. The current government’s idea of a Big Society and cuts in public grants & subsidies will mean less money for principal local authorities such as Doncaster Council; and smaller authorities, such as ourselves, will be asked to take on responsibility for more services. The public are always welcome at our meetings, which are usually held on the 4 th Tuesday of each month at the Pavilion in Tithes Lane. The agenda for all our meetings are placed on the Council noticeboards outside the Library and by the Cricket Ground in Alderson Drive. Copies of minutes of meetings are kept at the Library, placed on www.tickhilltoday.com and are also available, by contacting me at: tickhillclerk@sykehouse.net. A dedicated Council phone line will be installed in February and the new phone number & email address you can contact me on will be published on our noticeboards and in the March edition of Tickhill Today within the next few weeks.
