TICKHILL PRACTICE CONTINUES TO THRIVE Patients in Doncaster have plenty to smile about with Tickhill Dental Practice going from strength to strength. Not only did the practice welcome a new and enthusiastic owner last year, Neil Aylott, and his wife, Tingting, who took the helm as Practice Manager, but they’ve since been busy improving the practice facilities and patient experience to ensure that patients receive the best care possible. New owner Neil said: “I’d like to thank both the Tickhill Dental Practice team and our patients for welcoming us so warmly to the practice. It’s been great to meet our patients and gain a deeper insight into the ways in which they’d like us to develop the practice.” The practice has already benefitted from a light refurbishment, and Neil and Tingting have also just completed computerising the practice. This will streamline the practice administration and overall patient experience in booking and paying for appointments, as well as enabling Neil to upload vital patient notes and x-rays onto the surgery computers, allowing him to work more efficiently. The team is also set to grow further as they prepare to welcome new nurse, Kelly Hemmings, to the practice in early February. Neil said: “I’m sure our patients will join us in welcoming Kelly to the team and wishing her well in her career with Tickhill Dental Practice.” The Tickhill team are excited about the continued development of the practice throughout 2011 and are welcoming any ideas or feedback that patients may like to share. Many patients have already been generous with their feedback, and one patient, Deborah, who recently had two deep fillings, commented: “Neil and Nurse Sharon makes a smooth-running team, and Neil is extremely gentle. I felt no pain whatsoever. Never in my 47 years have I had such a good experience at the dentist. Neil was very thorough at reassuring that my bite was properly lined up after the fillings and was very careful to ensure I was comfortable before and during the procedure. All in all, an excellent experience - which is probably a strange thing to be saying about a trip to the dentist!” For more information about the practice, please contact Tickhill Dental Practice on 01302 750 300.

vast me hearties. Captain Burwash visits Estfeld.

Shiver me timbers! The pupils at Estfeld could scarcely believe their eyes as Captain Jack Burwash interrupted their Monday morning assembly recently, as only a pirate can. After introducing himself the Captain agreed to spend the day in school, regaling the children with exciting tales of Sea Rovers, Buccaneers and Pirates. Working with each class the Captain set his “crew to work. Throughout the week the children were kept busy on a range of tasks including researching the origins and customs of pirates, writing adventure stories, making recruitment posters for pirates so that the Captain can man his next voyage, designing Jolly Rogers, making model ships, designing life-sized pirates and most importantly using co-ordinates to plot their way to buried treasure. The week was celebrated with a pirate disco on the Thursday evening. Congratulations to Matias Peraza-Mason, Faith Bartrum, Ross Dickinson and Grace Sellers who each won a prize for their pirate costumes on the night. The pupils and staff dressed in pirate style on Friday when the children presented their work in assembly. The week was enjoyed by all and the pupils were inspired to produce excellent work. What a swashbuckling week it was. Before Captain Burwash left he took time to be photographed with his ship and crew.

Tickhill St Mary’s C of E Primary and Nursery School House captains at Tickhill St Mary’s House captains are members of year 6 who have been elected by their peers as good role models. All children belong to one of four “houses” or “teams” and each house has its own colour. Lumley, Scarbrough, Alderson and Lancaster. Team points are issued to children for a very good piece of homework, a kind deed and winning events at sports day amongst other things. Team points are logged on a wall chart and there is a cup bearing ribbons in all the house colours which is awarded to the winning team. Each house has two house captains who wear a badge in the house colour, which they must wear at all times and they are expected to behave in an exemplary fashion. They have a responsibility to the school, to their houses and to themselves. House captains also have extra duties such as assisting the younger pupils when moving between buildings and are given tasks at events such as sports day to assist in the smooth running of the day. Being a house captain is an honour and privilege and the children take the role very seriously. We are very proud of our children and the way they take on extra responsibility. We feel it teaches them values and prepares them for being good members of the community. Road safety theatre group

Our year 5 children were recently visited by a Road safety theatre group. At this age many children start walking to school on their own and statistics show that there is a sharp increase in children being injured in road accidents around 11 years of age when they start going to secondary school. This is due to the fact that most children now travel to and from school without their parents. DMBC are trying to reduce the trend by educating children about the dangers. The duo used humour and hands on activities to get the serious message of crossing roads safely over.

The children were given the opportunity to create a rap song about road safety:

This way, that way, foreway, backway, Lorries trundling down the street They are dangerous, stay away, If you want to live another day There was a lot of laughter and enjoyment but essentially they all remembered: Stop, Look, Listen! Katarina Martin School Secretary

doncasterchoices1419.org.uk The e-mail address to remember Impact Universal Theatre put on a fast and humorous performance to make Y10 students aware of the choices they had for further and higher education post16. Warming up with a Mexican wave across the hall, the actors used characters from TV programmes to show how different students learnt in different ways. Whether their learning style was academic, practical or mixed, pathways via apprenticeship, diploma or the ‘A’ level could lead to degree level qualifications. It was also stressed that at interview it was not necessary to know everything but to show their openness to new and further learning. Some of those targeted as potential high fliers took part in a workshop which reinforced the messages raised in the show. The actors, who work across the country, praised our students for their engagement in the event, saying they loved working at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College.

s there anybody there‌..?

A look at Simon Goodfellow with Dave Harper Our need for proof that our friends and loved ones have survived physical death, and are safe and well on the other side, has never been greater than it is today. Even some battle hardened sceptics are seeking the reassurance they once would have scoffed at. How fortunate we are then, that we are sent people like Simon Goodfellow, who strive to bring us the evidence and comfort we seek in a way that is meaningful to each of us. Without such people, our upsurge in belief could begin to dip again and that would be an immeasurable loss. That is why, of course, the Simon Goodfellows of the world are provided in the first place - thank goodness. Simon's attitude towards his abilities is remarkably humble, given that he has the ultimate gift. According to Simon, "Mediums are just ordinary people who usually have families and everyday jobs. A Medium is just a link between this world and the spirit world and everybody alive has Mediumistic capabilities of some kind, it's just a case of whether you wish to use and develop them." The paradox is this: for all his 'ordinariness' he really is anything but! It is true that, born and bred in Yorkshire, Simon is about as down to earth as you can get. He has no delusions of grandeur, there are no displays of ego, there is no sense of superiority. He’s just Simon. However, he has that beautiful gift of instantly putting you at your ease. He is one to those people who, within minutes of talking to him, you feel as though you have known him a life time. There is the sense that he would give you all the time in the world if that was what you needed and then there is the ready laughter and a sense of humour that just barely stops itself from bubbling over and which makes its way naturally into his work. Simon is the first person to point out that people do not change once they have moved to the other side of life. In his words, "If Uncle Jack was a joker in life, Uncle Jack will still be the same when working through a Medium. The personality does not change when they pass over" The beauty of Simon's approach is to connect to the personality, sense of humour and quirks of a loved one's character and this is one of the most comforting things when he brings a message to someone. For all who have lost a loved one, it is these very things that we miss the most and which we yearn to re-experience. It’s one of the greatest proofs a Medium can bring and Simon brings it in abundance.

Added to this is the unique sensitivity with which Simon treats both the people who seek his help and guidance and those he contacts on the other side of life. During demonstrations, he will go directly to the person for whom he has a message, be they in the front row or the back of the hall, and he will talk personally with them and their loved one. It is a particularly lovely way of working because it creates an intimacy that would otherwise be lacking if he were to remain at the front while speaking to someone at the far side of the room. It is this special personalisation, together with his uncanny accuracy, that has earned him the respect of sceptics and believers alike both in the UK and abroad. It is when you ask Simon to talk about his work that his passion really emanates from him. he is acutely aware of the burden of responsibility that accompanies his gifts, yet he takes this in this stride and determines to fulfil his purpose with genuine modesty, and you can just feel that he loves what he does and enjoys the journey - wherever it takes him. " Having the ability to link loved ones and friends who have crossed over to Spirit and to give so many people closure and direction in their lives is, for me, one of the greatest joys I could experience Simon explains Simon's knowledge and understanding of Mediumship is vast. it is not just knowing what to do that makes a remarkable Medium, it is also knowing what not to do and this is something he has mastered graciously. It is one of the many attributes that make him one of the most sort after and respected Mediums of today. It comes as no surprise that public demand for Simon's demonstrations and evenings with.... is rapidly escalating or that he is undertaking a Tour in 2011 to reach those who would otherwise be unable to reach him for sheer lack of days in the year. For those of you who are currently sceptical, I would encourage you to put your faith in Simon's ability. I feel you will not remain sceptical for long. For those of you who already believe but perhaps need affirmation, clarity, closure or a clear connection, you are assured of a sensitive and honest response. You can find details of all Simon's Tour Dates, Demonstrations and Evenings on his website www.simongoodfellow.com He will be at the Park Inn, Doncaster on Thursday 10th March .

A Very Happy Retirement from the Parishes of Tickhill and Stainton

Tickhill Horticultural Society

As in previous years the pie and pea supper encouraged an excellent turnout for the AGM at the end of January. President Ellis Baldwin and Chairman Ray Hill reviewed an enjoyable and well supported 2010. Speaker finder Eric Brough was thanked for an interesting and entertaining range of subjects and his list of speakers for 2011 was well received. The treasurer presented a large bag of packets of seeds to Karen Booker for the Estfeld School gardening club, with a similar bag having gone to St Mary’s school. The PTAs staff and governors of the two schools are developing gardens and encouraging active participation by their pupils. Many thanks to Judy Harrison and Sutton Seeds for their continued support. The financial report revealed that whilst the Annual Show had a shortfall of £54.44 we finished the year with a loss of just 50p. This was due to a successful day selling plants at the Scout and Guide Gala and the tremendous enthusiasm for the monthly raffle. The committee has however decided to increase the annual membership fee to £6 with a charge of £3 to visitors. After many years on the committee Roy Lawton has decided to retire. He will be missed, but we look forward to feeding off his great experience for both the Gala and the Annual Show. The rest of the committee were re-elected en-bloc and it was emphasised that any volunteers will be co-opted with grateful thanks. Our March speaker, on Thursday the 31st is David Matthewman of Went Valley Nursery, Pontefract. A vastly experienced and respected Nurseryman, judge and Sweet Pea grower, David was with us last in March 2004, this time his subject will be ‘45 years in Horticulture’ Venue: Methodist Schoolroom at 7.15pm

Gordon & Beryl’s Retirement Wednesday, 4th May, 2011

You may already know that Canon Gordon Taylor has announced his retirement. We would like to present him with a gift to mark this occasion and to thank both Canon and Mrs Taylor for all that they have done during their last eight years in Tickhill.

Wanted 3/4 bedroom family house in Tickhill. Buyers in rented so ready to proceed. Please contact 07789 772379 I love living in Tickhill, but on Tuesday 8th February I left my car in the large car park while I visited the Doctors. Sadly when I returned, I found both my door mirrors had been torn off. What a mindless bit of vandalism this was. What a sad society we live in when somebody gets fun out of this. So folks beware and keep an eye out if you have to leave your car unattended. Tickhill Resident.

ayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry Nr Doncaster. Thank goodness the weather seems to be turning a little warmer and it really makes you feel spring is around the corner.

Our puppy block has been well occupied since the Christmas period with 3 sets of puppies born within weeks of one another. One litter is ready for their new home but the other 2 litters are still quite young. Amongst others we, have taken in 3 abandoned Staffordshire bull terriers over the Christmas period all of which were found tied up and left. We are finding this a major problem at the moment, as the economic climate worsens we are finding more dogs needing new homes. We also have lots of kittens that need re homing which is surprising at this time of the year, as the influx is usually at its worst in the spring. We are also taking a deep breath regarding our financial year end. Our donations are down and all charities are struggling somewhat. Not at least ours On a brighter note look up our 2 star dogs, Bella and Doug on Face book, you can see how there new life is changing every day. We would like to thank everyone for taking their unwanted clothes to the Sanctuary for recycling. This is on on going project so any unwanted clothes please drop off at the Sanctuary. If anyone would like to get involved in fund raising it would be wonderful please let us know. Or if you have any ideas you would like to put into place to raise money for this very worth while charity call us. We still require volunteers for our Charity shop in Manton, so if anyone has the odd day to spare again please let us know. Don’t forget our Charity Summer Ball 11th June held at Ye Olde Bell Barnby Moor Nr Retford. Please let us know in good time should you require tickets which are £40 per person. It only seems like yesterday when we were updating you all on our Christmas activities and Easter eggs are already in the shops! This includes 40 giant chocolate Easter eggs which we at Tickhill & District Lions will be raffling off to raise money for good causes within our community and beyond. Shops and businesses all over the district are selling tickets and displaying the eggs, which are each more than a foot tall and contain about a kilogram (or 2.2 lbs) of delicious milk chocolate. So if you keep your eyes open you can’t miss them, and for just the price of a raffle ticket one could be all yours (although there really would be enough to share). Also a reminder that on the evening of Wednesday April 6th, Tickhill & District Lions will be holding a fundraising Sportsmen’s dinner at Doncaster Golf Club where the line-up includes two top comedians. Kevin Connelly is a star of the BBC TV and radio series, Dead Ringers and has recorded numerous voiceovers for both television and radio, including being part of Talk Radio's World Cup team. Joining Kevin will be twice Variety Club “Comedian of the Year”, Martin Gold and the evening will be hosted by Master of Ceremonies, Malcolm Lord. These people are all prepared to assist, but new ‘leaders’ need to be found. This group is very much a community group now and if anyone is interested in the organisation of events (Late Night Shopping / Scarecrow Festival / other?) then please come along to the next meeting on Tuesday 5th April at 5.45pm in the Carpenters Arms.

Tickhill Scouts What a good month it has been. We have had scouts caving, radio orienteering, canoeing, camping, in-line skating and hiking and it is only just February. What have we got in-store over the next few months? Programs are being developed by all sections including more camping, pedal car constructing and racing, cycling, youth hostelling and probably much more. It is very satisfying to belong to an organisation which prides itself on providing fun, challenging activities to any youngster who is prepared to give the commitment necessary to make things a success. Of course, none of this would be possible without the unstinting support of the adults attached to our Scout Group. Despite the doom and gloom spread by the media we have been very successful in attracting more adults both young and old to come along and help us with our efforts to pass on the scouting experience to your youngsters. What is the Scouting experience you might ask? Why do people say Scouting is a good thing. What do they know about us? Are we a secret society indulging is strange rituals and wearing oddly named pieces of clothing? It would not be surprising when you hear about woggles, neckers, being invested (or infested, as some of our younger members say). We operate under a code called the Scout Law and Promise. We do wear woggles and neckers. We sometimes call the adults strange names but, under all this our aim is to give a youngster a grasp on the more basic requirements of living. Things such as sharing, tolerance, care and friendship. We try to be non-judgemental but firm if someone does something inappropriate. We teach youngsters how to be self sufficient, capable of looking after themselves and others. We attempt to persuade them that, despite other pressures, they should treat others with respect no matter who they are or where they are. If you feel that you can join in with such a movement we would be very grateful to hear from you. We will always find a place for you. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a scout overcome a fear and achieve something that seemed totally out of reach. Even if it is something as simple as managing to step across a gap between 2 benches when the gap seems impossible to bridge – a challenge at a recent scout meeting. You may remember that the Phoenix Explorer Scout Unit had spent 2010 raising money for the Safe@Last charity. It has now been confirmed that the figure they raised was £809. This is a tremendous result and far exceeded the target set initially. As we approach springtime it is time to sort out your cupboards and wardrobes and get rid of all those things you didn’t know you had and hence don’t need. Our next Jumble Sale will be held on March 26th at 12.00. If you have any jumble please bring it down to the Scout & Guide HQ on the day or, if you cannot manage this, call 01302 743430 for assistance .

Tickhill and District Local History Society Unfortunately this month’s closing date for Tickhill Today is before our Archive Evening on 17 th February so a report on that will have to wait until next month. Meantime our January meeting when Chris Felton presented “A Barber Surgeon’s Tales” is well worth a mention. Chris, appropriately dressed as a medieval barber surgeon in the service of a noble lord demonstrated the tools (one could hardly describe them as instruments!) used by surgeons in the 1300’s and performed “operations” on two volunteer patients both of whom survived – a much higher success rate than a true medieval surgeon could have expected. Some of the surgery performed at the time, such as drilling through the skull to relieve pressure on the brain, was remarkably advanced even if the reasons for performing the operations were less well understood. Chris’s humorous commentary on his work caused much amusement in the audience. We thank Chris and his volunteer patients for a very enjoyable evening. Our next meeting will be on Thursday March 17th when Jane West will give a talk entitled “From trenchers to coffins”. Perhaps surprisingly in view of its title this talk is about medieval cookery and we understand that Jane will actually cook some food using medieval recipes as part of the demonstration. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) we will not be able to sample the finished products for “Elf and Safety” reasons! As usual the meeting will be held in the Methodist Schoolroom starting at 7.30PM and visitors will be welcome. Finally, if you are one of those people who have been thinking of joining the Society but haven’t got around to doing so then maybe your time has come. Anybody joining on or after our March meeting will have their membership carried forward to September 2012 without further cost. Membership fees are currently £7 (Full), £6 (Concessions), and £10 (Family). Junior membership for anybody in full time education is free.

culpture Exhibition at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery IT’S ALL IN THE MIND – Hilary Cartmel 19 March to 17 May 2011

The Sculptor Hilary Cartmel who lives and works in Styrrup is having a solo exhibition of her sculpture in Doncaster’s Art Gallery. This will comprise of new work made over the past 18 months. It brings together a series of dreaming heads with their minds’ imaginations made solid, and explores notions of declining faculties and physical failure which confront us all as we age. The sculptures are made in stainless steel and steel with other materials, cast bronze, cast glass, glass mosaic, wood. Hilary won first prize in Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery’s 2009 Open Art exhibition. Hilary Cartmel makes large scale artwork for public sites. She has completed over 60 projects from London to Edinburgh in both rural and urban settings. Her clients are private individuals, large and small organisations, local authorities, NHS and PLCs and community organisations. You may be familiar with the screens that line the runways in the bus station in Rotherham, the gates at the competitors entrance at Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield, the figure of Carmen which stands outside the Theatre Royal in Nottingham, The Stainless steel and glass Tree in the Gardens at Rufford Country Park or the large pair of hands at the entrance to the NHS treatment centre at University Hospital Nottingham. In order to take time out of public commission work to make the work for this exhibition she was awarded a substantial grant from Arts Council England. TICKHILL BROWNIES

Our Pack Holiday is now booked for April, we are off to Grosmont in North Yorkshire for 5 days and 4 nights. It is the biggest adventure we/I have ever undertaken with the girls. We have been away for overnights, once travelling to London on a National Express bus for an overnight stay at Guiding HQ, and weekends at Hesley Woods, near Chapeltown, but never for this long, and I thank all the parents for putting their trust in me and my team to keep the girls safe, we will do our best to make sure they have a great time. It is our intention to spend a day on the North Yorks Moors Railway, to walk the Rail Trail and also visit either Pickering, or Whitby depending on the weather. Watch out for a full report in a later magazine. Also, after worrying that I had a lot of 9 nine year olds who were all going to move on together I have had at least 10 new Brownies start since Christmas making both packs very full indeed. We are currently in the process of enrolling the new girls, always a nervous time for them as they try to learn and remember their Brownie Promise and Law. For all the ‘old’ Brownies out there the Promise is: I promise to do my best, to love my God, to serve the Queen and my country, to help other people and to keep the Brownie Guide Law. The Law is: A Brownie Guide thinks of others 52| Tickhill Today

before herself and does a good turn every day. It is sometimes quite difficult in modern times to get across that we are not a youth club, but part of a large organisation with a long tradition, run by volunteers, we all wear our uniforms with pride. This will be most evident when we are out and about on our Pack Holiday, we will be instantly recognisable as Brownies and people often stop to ask the girls where they are from, or tell them about when they themselves were in the Guiding organisation. Long may the tradition of Guiding continue. If you want to become involved please contact me. Clare Carr, Brown Owl 07780 703012

Beware the virus. A potentially harmful virus lurks in the land. Most of the time it lies dormant. But occasionally it becomes active and may not be to your advantage. The experts call it ‘T and C’ and it can be seen in connection with many of the transactions we all make. It’s full name is ‘Terms and Conditions’. If you invest in a bank or building society, take a contract with a utility firm, do a deal with a business, book a railway or aircraft ticket, sign up to a holiday package or take out travel insurance you may notice that ‘Terms and Conditions apply’. In fact you will notice because you will be asked to ‘Tick this box to confirm that you have read the Terms and Conditions‘. No tick, no contract. Many of us don’t bother to read them. They are not always easy to get. They have to be downloaded from the internet or you have to send to Head office for them. Some companies like banks send a fat little booklet for you to read. The one I have to hand has 34 pages. It is one of the better examples, well laid out, print size small but not too small , reasonably understandable language. Many examples are not so acceptable. Their print is very small and often faint grey rather than black, the language is legalistic, jargonrich and forbidding. Often they are so lengthy that we cannot be bothered to find a magnifying glass and plough through them. So we tick the box and hope for the best. After all. thousands of other people have signed up so everything must be alright, and anyway perhaps some Regulator has approved it. And all is well most of the time. But if things go awry the virus becomes important. If your flight is cancelled or you are taken ill on holiday, or the house has a flood there are clauses in the Terms and Conditions that spring into action, and you have agreed to abide by them. Perhaps it is only then that we really study the policy or read the small print. These documents are promoted as giving information to customers. But they are also CBPD,s. That is, Company Backside Protection Documents. Some businesses are compensation averse and not over enthusiastic about dealing with complaints or giving an apology. Some advertisements also have restrictions. A recent offer from a leading breakdown cover company for £39, plus a £20 Boots voucher also has the following in the tiny print: Offer only available to new Members joining by phone quoting the reference given and paying by recurring annual payment. £39 offer price is for annual Vehicle Membership (Roadside). Offer applies to first 12 months cover and is not available for existing Members or at renewal.

So, be aware of the Terms and Conditions - if only you can find that magnifying glass! Philip Mottram

World Book Night 5 March 2011 World Book Night represents the most ambitious and far-reaching celebration of adult books and reading ever attempted in the UK and Ireland. On Saturday, 5 March 2011, two days after World Book Day, with the full support of the Publishers Association, the Booksellers Association, the Independent Publishers Guild, the Reading Agency with libraries, World Book Day, the BBC and RTE, one million books will be given away by an army of passionate readers to members of the public across the UK and Ireland. The book give-away will comprise 40,000 copies of each of the 25 carefully selected titles, to be given away by 20,000 ‘givers’, who will each distribute 48 copies of their chosen title to whomever they choose on World Book Night. The remaining books will be distributed by World Book Night itself in places that might otherwise be difficult to reach, such as prisons and hospitals. I have been selected to give away 48 copies of Carol Ann Duffy’s The World’s Wife It’s a book of poetry that I love. It is funny. It is rude. These subversive poems look at the women behind the great men of history. It’s a book that I have already given away to friends and family so it was an easy choose this from the list of 25 titles. If you would like a copy please email me at artist.farm@googlemail.com and we can arrange the book giveaway. Perhaps some of you would like to get together for a poetry reading in April once you have had a chance to read and enjoy the work?
