“Spring is the time of plans and projects.”
KEEP CALM
~ Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina
A ‘Spring’ quote seemed appropriate this month, although at the time of writing the weather is anything but Spring like! Spring is a time of new life and new beginnings and a time when many of us look at home improvements, or make a start on garden projects. This month’s magazine is full or businesses and tradespeople who can help you with these projects. Whether it be a building project, a patio, new carpets, a greener lawn or a clean oven, whatever your springtime project there is sure to be someone featured who can help you. Don’t forget to tell them you found them in Today Publications when you contact them!

community March has been another busy and interesting month in the Parish Room. We danced with Nellie Stagles classes, we ate sensibly with Slimming world, we ate ‘differently’ with a Nepalese chef, we ate cake (for charity, so no need to feel guilty!) we made important decisions regarding Tickhill with Tickhill Town Council, we exercised with Zumba, we talked a lot at the regular Saturday coffee morning! We spoke French with the Francophiles, met with the WI, lunched with John Marsden and watched a beautiful illustrated slide show with John Hoare. After all that we calmed our bodies and our minds with Yoga! Finally - at last - the clocks changed and the longer nights arrived. Let’s hope
The Parish Room the warmer weather also obliges! You have to agree, the Parish Room is an interesting and educational place to be! On 3rd April we will have the regular WI meeting at 2 p.m., and Les Francophiles de Tickhill meet at 7.30 p.m. Slimming World meet every Thursday at 6.30 p.m., John Marsden has a lunch on the 10th and the 24th, Zumba classes will be back after an Easter break on the 18th. We have our normal regular coffee mornings every Saturday. Tickhill Parish Room AGM will be held on Wednesday 10th April at 7 p.m., followed by a short meeting at 7.30 p.m.

It will commence at 11.00am at St Peter’s C of E Primary School, Mill Road, Gringley on the Hill. Here we will have performances by Breakthrough Kids and the crowning of the May Queen Ceremony. Refreshments and craft activities are also available at a small charge and the profits from these will go to Gringley Summer Activities. From here we will parade around the village departing at approximately 12.30pm, it would be great if the children could come in fancy dress and there will be prizes for the best. We will arrive at The Blue Bell pub from 1.30pm where there will be a bouncy castle and food available. 6

Book Day 2013 On Friday 8th March 2013 all the school dressed up for World Book Day. Mr Marsden chose one winner from each class and he did an amazing job as everyone had made such a fantastic effort.
Thank you for all the generous support that was given to the children which will go towards getting the benches for the garden. George Marsden Year 6 (Foljambe) On the sunny Friday 8th March everybody dressed up as their favourite character from their favourite book. Everyone had a good day especially me! I did not win but there’s more than winning, like the wonderful memories from one of the best days of my life. I have only got a few more months before this special year ends and I begin my new life at secondary school. I will be sad to leave my friends. We all will; but the good thing is that we all have a great day to remember. Charnie Nolan Year 6 (Foljambe) On Friday 8th March Tickhill St Marys celebrated World Book Day by asking people to dress up as their favourite book character from any book. There was a competition

for the best costume in each class judged by Mr John Marsden, our own church organ player. Every class had amazing costumes everyone enjoyed themselves and it was a great success! Oliver Ford Y6 (Foljambe)

Red Nose Day 2013
Red noses of all varieties adorned the faces of the pupils of St Marys pupils as we celebrated Red Nose Day 2013. Also bobbly head gear, red wigs and face paints were in evidence! A collection was made for this very worthy cause. Many thanks for all the contributions made by all. In addition Year 6 organised a Bake Sale and received some wonderful buns to sell to the children at their morning break. As you can see they looked wonderful and tasted wonderful too. A raffle of 3 rather splendid Red Nose Cakes was organised for the teachers by Callum Davies. This was won by Miss Cook, Mrs Allen and Mrs Greenfield. Key Stage 2 children also considered the more serious side of Comic Relief, learnt the Comic Relief School song and had fun with some games in the hall. Once again many thanks for all contributions. New Healthier Fitter You Hi Folks! Last month I talked about taking control of your calorie intake and the importance of eating Breakfast! This month I am going to start by talking about Metabolism. You want your metabolic rate to be working with you, not against you. You ideally want your metabolic rate in the highest gear possible so it burns as much energy as possible meaning your body holds less body fat and burns through the body fat you already have. Let’s use an ideal scenario to give a clear picture. Once awake you should be having breakfast to kick start your metabolism and get your engine
going. You want a nice white hot furnace before you start your day. Once your day has begun you should be eating small and often. A small well balanced meal (not snack) every 3-4 hours will keep your metabolism white hot and enable your body to continue burning body fat. Without calories in your stomach you reduce your body’s ability to burn body fat stores. It’s a bit like you cannot burn a candle without oxygen, well your body NEEDS calories in order
to burn body fat. Hence if you miss BREAKFAST or LUNCH you are slowing down your metabolic rate and risk gaining weight when you snack or over consume later that day (and you will). Hopefully by now you are eating breakfast daily and making breakfast, lunch and your evening meal important parts of your daily routine. What about Exercise I hear you runners shout?! T
EXERCISE
The truth is you can control your weight without exercise, it is just so much easier with physical activity than without it. If you are eating the correct amount of calories in small, well balanced meals then great but if you are not and you are just missing meals in an attempt to lose weight then physical activity is KEY to drive your weight loss. When you undertake exercise of any form your body will recover afterwards and most importantly it compensates. 12 TICKHILL TODAY
The body is so clever and it doesn’t like getting tired or running out of energy or fuel for that matter! For a full explanation of how exercise helps to promote lean muscle repair and drive weight loss down, drop me an email. Remember: 1.

TOP TIPS for finding your new home
Over recent years the changes in the housing market have made us start looking at our property as a home and not a cash cow. House hunters have become increasingly reliant on the Internet as their primary port of call to see what the area has to offer. The Internet is a fantastic tool, and there is no doubt that it should form part of a wider toolkit for buyers. Don’t underestimate the value of getting out there, getting to know an area and viewing potential homes. So here are your myplace team’s top tips to finding your next new home.
WorkSure
• Start by putting together your wish list and remember it is exactly that. Putting down all your requirements and why you need them in writing can help with the next step.... • Prioritise those must have items, to form your essentials list. Remember compromise is the name of the game without this you’ll be searching for the impossible. • Visit the area you’re thinking of moving to, get a feel for where the local shops, doctors and schools are.
If it’s an area that new to you then take the time to go there at different times of day. • Register your requirements with local agents. This way you will get to find out about properties before their listing appears elsewhere. • Don’t be afraid to go and view homes that reach your shortlist. It is only by going and seeing a property first hand that you will begin to get a sense of whether it’s right for you.

property • Give yourself a couple of wildcards, test what you think you want and; you might just be surprised at what you discover! • Go armed with a list of questions when viewing, don’t be afraid to engage in conversation with the seller and learn about the area, costs of running the home, the neighbourhood, how the house works for the current owner. • Take your time, yes you’re in someone’s home but remember this could be your next home don’t feel rushed or like your imposing. • Revisit your ‘must have’ list once you’ve viewed a property and take some time to think about how the home you’ve just seen compares. • Constructive feedback via the agent will be welcomed by the seller if the house is not for you. • Let your head take control over your heart If you’re thinking of booking a
2nd viewing then this essential visit is time to… • Take a realistic and practical look.. Ask yourself, will this work for your lifestyle, have your ‘must have’ criteria been met and if not can they be met over time, with changes and modifications to the property.
Remember finding the right house is not a science but a little thought and preparation can help you understand what it is your looking for and get you well on the road to finding the right home for you. Simon Chandler | www.myplaceyourhome.co.uk T

Rosie’s personal passion is for hand-painted furniture and she loves to find old furniture from antiques fairs and auctions, and to paint/wax/distress and add new handles. Giving items a new lease of life, and turning them back into The Fabric and Trimmings side still offers the same great quality, indeed Cheryl who owned the business for 15 years is something attractive and useable. You will find many of these items in the shop. still doing all the making up of curtains and soft furnishings, and Rosie has retained all of the same suppliers of fabrics, Rosie will be holding an official launch event over the May wallpapers and curtain poles and continues to add new lines Day weekend 3rd-6th May. She has many things planned for all the time. those days including a prize draw for customers and special Rosie has also continued with many of the Reloved Interiors offers and promotions on selected items. The new JOIN US system Girlguiding UK always tries to keep up with technology and over the last few years their records and the way that we leaders manage the information we have to keep as regards contact numbers, addresses and other information has changed to reflect the growing use of technology in the world today. The way that Rainbows move up to Brownies and new Brownies are registered onto the system is the latest thing to change. Gone are the days when parents can give me a call, or pop into the meeting to get their daughter into Brownies (unfortunately). The new system requires parents to log on to the Girlguiding website (www. girlguiding.org.uk) and register their interest in the ‘parents’ section. In this section they are given a choice of all the Brownie groups in the area and the

night they would like to attend. If a pack in Tickhill is chosen then I will get an email and it goes on from there. At the moment I, and many other leaders, am not convinced that this is progress in small and rural communities where everyone knows everyone else, but at this moment we have no choice but to give the new system a good try. If your daughter is currently a Rainbow, please talk to the Rainbow leaders when they are due to move up to Brownies. If all else fails however, please still contact me directly as I
am a big believer that there is always a way to get around any system! On a brighter note, Tickhill Brownies are starting to prepare now for Easter and are knee deep in balloons, glue and string, with maybe a bit of chocolate thrown in. Our Pack Holiday at Walesby for the older girls is well into the preparation stages, and we are even beginning to think about the Gala in July. Clare Carr, Brown Owl, 07780 703012 T

Our Scarecrow Festival will be on Saturday 4th May between 10am and 5pm. Judging will begin at 10am and announcements will be made in the Market Place at around 2pm. As well as all the scarecrows to view there will be rides, stalls, and attractions at different points and lots of food at a variety of venues including the Shops, the Parish Room, Methodist Church and Scout Headquarters. The ideal way to see what’s on is to have a programme. These are on sale from early April at KSM, Castlegate DIY and Deli 28, price £2 each please. Proceeds go towards funding other Tickhill Together events. During April, and in preparation for the Scarecrow Festival, we are planning to have a Blitz on Litter in the village. We can be grateful to the folk who continually do pick up litter. We aim to supplement what is done already by those people and DBMC to have Tickhill “Litter Free” for 4th May. We have access to all the gear. If you would like to be part of this team,
going out as you are able, please give John Marsden a ring on 744142. Our Scarecrow Festival is a fantastic day of fun for the whole family. Let’s together, make it a really attractive time for all to enjoy. T

Garden View
CAN YOU DIG IT? Soil, mud, dirt or muck, call it what you will, but is yours any good and can you dig it? One of the most common ‘moans’ I get from gardeners is that “my soil is rubbish”. We’ll presume they mean it’s not great quality (and not that it’s full of litter), but I’m never quite sure what people expect from their soil. Probably a soft, stone free, sifted loam or maybe a dark, rich organic compost such as that found in a grow bag. The reality is that soil, like man, is never perfect. Sometimes too wet, too squidgy, too crumbly, or too firm, and, just like humans, the perfect soil takes hard work to maintain. Now I realise that some people were just born perfect, just as some loamy soils are too. But if you’re not one of the lucky ones, and your soil is more arm pit than Brad Pitt, here’s what to do about it. Like all things in life, there are extremes. I (being a horticultural extremist) had to go the whole hog and excavate the clay from my borders, replacing it with 40cm of topsoil, but unless you’re starting a garden from scratch, and have access to a digger, I’d recommend working with what you already have. I’ve only 30 TICKHILL TODAY
ever come across one soil type which I didn’t think possible to improve due to its shallow nature, so we just added soil on top to make it deeper. Whether you have easy-to-dig sandy soil or moisture retentive clay, the addition of a few ingredients will help create a beautiful growing medium. If you are a novice gardener it’s simple, just add well-rotted (not smelly) manure, weed-free and lots of it. For those with clay soil, and more stamina, add horticultural grit to the soil and dig in well, then dig in manure and top off with a 5cm layer of manure to act as mulch. And for those who really can’t be bothered with digging, just add a layer of manure to the soil surface after feeding with a pelleted fertilizer. It’s not ideal, but the worms will drag it down into the soil, and it’s much better than nothing at all. You’ll also have more success in the future if you choose the right types of plants for your soil pH. Testing kits are available online and in garden centres. If you want to grow acid loving plants in a strongly alkaline soil, you can try the addition of sulphur chips, coffee grinds, pine based composts, or planting in tubs
of ericaceous compost, but failing that, my advice is to move house! T
Until next time, happy gardening,

World Book Day IN MARCH THE pupils and staff of Tickhill Estfeld celebrated World Book Day in style. Dressed as their favourite book characters they were treated to a visit from local author Mrs Sylvia Atkinson, who is also one of our governors. Sylvia is the author of the book “The Letter” and very kindly shared her story with the pupils in assembly, explaining to the children the process of writing and publishing a book. It was very interesting and the children gained an insight of the complexity of getting a book into print. Later in the morning our pupils also took part in a shared reading session, where older pupils read with the younger pupils; this is something that school does periodically and the pupils are always very enthusiastic about it – reading for pleasure is something that we treasure. The school also held a book 38 TICKHILL TODAY
exchange. The pupils donated books that they had read but were still in good condition. Pupils were then able to purchase a “new” book for 50p. All of the money collected was used to support two charities that work to improve children’s literacy. The first is a school in Guatemala, Escuela Primeria Rafael Rosales, which the Castellan family visit. The second is the Abura Literacy School in Ghana which is a charity made known to us by Mrs Maxine McCoy. The money raised will be used to buy books as the children have few at their schools. Thank you to everybody that helped to make our World Book Day a success, and special thanks to Mrs Martin, for organising such a wonderful day. Maths Day 2013 On Friday 8th March the whole school took part in Maths Day.
Each class had different maths tasks to do using Elmer the Elephant. Reception class did addition using blocks. They also did repetitive patterns using colours and make 6 different elephants using only 3 colours! Year 1 drew symmetrical patterns and coloured them in and put blocks on a grid and made a picture of Elmer. Then counted up how many blocks they had used. Year 2 played a game using dice and different pieces to make the shape of Elmer. They also had to work out measurements using different ingredients. Year 3 had to work out the size of Elmer’s (the patchwork elephant who helps us with maths!) foot and then the size of their feet and then work out the difference. Year 4 worked out how far
BURGLARY
I have lived in Tickhill, with my wife, for over 36 years. My children were born here, schooled here and visit us regularly. I have friends here and feel privileged to have my home here. I have excellent neighbours and look forward to walks around the village, where I can meet any number of people who have the courtesy and manners to be polite at all times. I am happy here – I could downsize and move away but my family wish to stay amongst their friends. However, you would think my judgement questionable given that, I have now been burgled 10 times. Yes, 10 times. The Police have had little or no success apprehending the burglars, although they have come close on 4 occasions. 40 TICKHILL TODAY
Mother’s union they can jump compared to a Kangaroo in a book. They did a running jump and a standing jump and a hop, step and jump. They also had to get Elmer from one place to another using co-ordinates. They also did a game using multiplication. In Year 5 we had to work out how much it would cost to feed an elephant for a year! We split into groups of 4 and 5 and used the internet to find out what elephants eat and the weight and then we went on Tesco website to find out how much the food would cost. We also made different shapes using tape and measuring. Year 6 had to work out the area that Elmer would need to live and work out how much it would cost. They also had to work out how much it would cost to feed a herd of elephants for a week! We had a fantastic day and everyone had fun! T My security system was expensive and works well, and has stopped a further 2 attempts at direct entry into my property. I am convinced that a number of the attempts are by people living locally as are the Police. What can we do to help each other? Can we share information? Can we ask the Police for a specific contact and pass on information? Any suggestions at taking the neighbourhood watch scheme further may well be possible and I would be prepared to organise such an initiative if residents think it worthwhile. We are all indirectly involved because our insurance premiums are built on these attempts at burglary. I can only guess at the physical cost but what is the mental cost? I am constantly looking out of the window wondering when and where the next attempt will come from. Name and address supplied on request. T
MU members led some intercession prayers at the Mothering Sunday service on 10th March at St. Mary’s church and also helped to distribute flowers to the congregation. Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan As I write this, the first Neighbourhood Plan in the country is being voted on by the citizens of the 17 rural parishes in the east of Cumbria who prepared it. It isn’t directly relevant to our situation, not least because it is almost entirely about affordable housing in the countryside. Two others have now passed the independent examination stage, the St.James Exeter NP and the Thame NP. The Exeter plan covers part of the city while Thame is a market town nearly twice the size of Tickhill and with a significant requirement to allocate

The increased prize money reflects the improved membership of 75, and since the draw three more numbers have been taken, so only 22 left. St. Georges Rotary Club
Doncaster St George’s Rotary Club take great pleasure in land for housing and employment. announcing the return of ‘An Tickhill does not have the latter responsibility. However all these plans Evening With Gervase Phinn’. are useful in helping us to see how plans can be successfully worded and laid out. We can learn from the experience of those who have gone first through the new process. Here in Tickhill, the public consultation on the work prepared by our study groups has taken place in the Parish Room. Thank you to all who came along and for the support and encouragement you gave to the team. There were 374 written comments on the work of our 7 topic groups, which they are now considering. A quick review revealed a high level of support for our work. Unsurprisingly, the need for public toilets came high on your list of wants; it is worth stating that there are toilets available for public use in the library and that its opening hours have been increased. There was general support for any measures to reduce both traffic speed and the volume of through traffic, with many requests for additional pedestrian refuges to aid crossing main roads in safety. You are particularly keen to see measures to increase safety at the Stripe Road crossroads before there is a serious accident. Many of you expressed a strong view that the castle is potentially our best attraction but access is denied to the public; although previous attempts to change this have failed, we need to continue to press the point. There is a long way to go before our Neighbourhood Plan is complete! In the meantime we still welcome ideas, especially for tackling the difficult issues, like the problems around the Market Place, especially for pedestrians. Our secretary is Rosemary Chappell, contacted by e mail pchappell@callnet. uk.com or telephone 745885. John Hoare. T
Gervase continues to be one of Yorkshire’s funniest and most-loved story tellers – packing out theatres up and down the country as well as writing a series of best-selling books and appearing on a wide range of TV and radio shows. If you’ve been lucky enough to have been entertained by Gervase in the past, you’ll no doubt be first in the queue to see him again. If however you’ve never had the pleasure of seeing him live, this is an opportunity not to be missed. The show is scheduled to take place 7pm for 7.30pm in the fabulous Millennium Suite at Castle Park Stadium, Armthorpe Road, Doncaster on Friday 17 May 2013. A bar will be provided and tickets can be purchased by contacting John Batt on 01302 745716 or e-mailing jdbatt@ btinternet.com . community During March we witnessed a good range of fantastic nights out in the company of talented musicians, playing to small audiences in small venues for very small entrance fees. Tickhill Music Society’s concert was a joy, with four young musicians- the Castalian Quartet who played work by 3 composers, one of which was Beethoven, a four movement piece was written for a small circle of connoisseurs and was never to be performed in public – just as well he didn’t bin this stunning work which was so modern in structure and sound – its hard to believe that it was written 203 years ago. I caught the Christopher P Wood’s painting exhibition in Leeds. The show was a joy or colour and fantastical landscape. It is travelling to the Djanogly Gallery in Nottingham in July. Highly recommended. The Ukaranian Club in Doncaster have had more fun and varied gigs and for very little money – highlights were Karl Toth whose set began with Superstitious – just his voice and acoustic guitar. Karl delivered a fantastic set, a young man with a rosey future. And at the Rock – folk for a fiver event the wonderful Roy Machin and then the multi- instrumentalist trio Beggars Banquette, who have taken the Stones song book and found their inner folkieness and delivered an amazing concert. They finished up with Last Time which morphed into an Irish jig. Catch them if you can – they are just beginning their tour.

exhibition by William Turnbull in its beautiful gardens until 30 June. He is a late 20th century sculptor whose work I find predictable and dull, but he was clearly very successful and well connected, as so much of it has been cast into bronze. Chatsworth gardens are always worth a visit and this work may add to the pleasure. Curated by Yorkshire Sculpture Park. community Hello everyone, how good does it feel to see the sunshine that we are experiencing at the moment. At least some of our more robust dogs can go into their runs without getting muffled up in dog coats. Some of the little ones still need to be kept warm though so we do make sure we have plenty of warm coats for them during the day. We were lucky enough to be invited to join a Charity event at Hodsock Priory in February. Our Tombola was very well received and we met some lovely people. Thank you everyone for coming to say hello and helping to raise money to keep our dogs and cats well fed and cared for. We were also invited to Direct Line in Doncaster, they very kindly held a charity day for us. They baked cakes and hosted various activities to raise money for our charity. We also took 2 of our resident dogs with us and they were thoroughly spoilt. A big thank you, everyone had a great time and it was refreshing to see a company that

gave people time out to help the animal world. Would anyone be interested in walking to keep fit? It’s always easier if you have a dog to walk. We desperately need dog walkers to keep our dogs happy and not kept in their runs all day where they get very bored, even though their carers spend as much time as they can with them to stimulate and train basic commands, they still need a jolly good walk. During the morning would be best (9-1) while their kennels are being cleaned. If we could get a number of people to walk our dogs it would also be an ideal opportunity to make friends. Don’t forget to put in your diaries our next fundraising event the 8th June at Ye Old Belle, Barnby Moor, Nr Retford. Wild West night (cowboys and Indians). There will be an auction and raffle, live band, disco, prize for best dressed and the ticket price includes supper. Tickets are £20 please call 01302 711330 or 07969 203206 for tickets. This is proving to be a popular night so call soon to avoid disappointment. Lastly a big thank you for everyone that has helped us at the Sanctuary since Christmas, there are some very
generous people out there and our Sanctuary could not survive without the general publics help. One company that has been incredibly generous and caring over the last couple have months is B W Flooring Services Ltd, there director Barry has helped us re floor some of our kennels and puppy block. So a big thank you we are very grateful. Please call us if you are considering adopting a cat or dog we will be happy to help and point you in the right direction.

Quartet. The name relates to the celebrated fountain in Greece, sacred to Apollo and the Muses with the power to inspire all who drink there; it is a fitting title for these talented players, all masters (and mistresses) of their instruments who blended into an integrated team with impressive ensemble playing. They began with early Schubert, written when he was only sixteen. It had a melodious first movement, a spirited Scherzo, a hymn-like Adagio and a jaunty last movement.
Beethoven’s Opus 95 is the gateway to his monumental late quartets. The players attacked it with precision and zest, the whole piece being an integrated structure of powerful Beethovian architecture. Finally Mendelssohn’s Op 44 No. 2 was a judicious mixture of tuneful melody and brisk faster movements, notably the agitated Scherzo and the final Presto a characteristic example of Mendelssohn’s vigour. The
Professionals The chimney, the drive, the oven: We couldn’t do without them, but many of us do try and get away without cleaning them! So why not call in a professional and save yourself some blood, sweat and tears!
A chimney that serves an open fire should be swept annually to keep the fire burning efficiently and safely, and for around £40 it can be done quickly and competently by a trained professional. During a sweep, which takes around 45 minutes, brushes inserted into the flue dislodge soot deposits which are removed by vacuuming. Most chimney sweeps will also inspect your chimney from the roof for potential problems. Soot deposits can build up and obstruct the chimney, making the fireplace inefficient and potentially unsafe. Flammable creosote, found in soot, can also ignite and cause the chimney to catch fire. Members of The National Association of Chimney Sweeps are fully qualified and experienced, have full public liability insurance and issue certificates on completion of their work. The Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps trains, assesses and monitors its members to ensure that customers receive the best service. Cleaning your own oven is hard work, time consuming and dirty, but if you choose a professional instead, you’ll get a trained individual who can generally do a much better job in a fraction of the time! A typical clean takes 1 to 1.5 52 TICKHILL TODAY
hours which will include the racks, shelves and pans as well as the interior and outside of the oven. It costs around £50, but do check exactly what is included in the price as many companies charge extra for items like grill pans. Members of The Association of Approved Oven Cleaners have completed training in Health and Safety and employment law, and do not use caustic or toxic products within your home. Weeds, moss and dirt are all too common additions to driveways and patios once they have been laid for a while. DIY jet washing can remove them but it is a messy, dirty job and can leave behind zebra striping and unsightly lines. A professional drive cleaning company will eliminate that problem by blasting the surface with high pressure water from rotary head cleaning equipment. The process removes weeds, surface grime, moss and algae and restores colour to once dull slabs and tiles. The job is finished by re-sanding the joints and a sealant can also be applied which will protect the surface and discourage weeds from re-growing. Cost depends on size and it is always a good idea to get more than one quote and to ask for references if available. T SO, SPRING INTO ACTION & get those problem areas spruced up and gleaming! T

Charitable local Tradesman dealt cruel blow
Many of you may know Anto Rowland and James Ellis of Arke Property Services Limited. Even if you have not used them yourselves you may have seen them in and around Tickhill and Bawtry in their distinctive Land Rover Discovery.
During the second week of February they volunteered on a building project in Misterton for the BBC TV Series, DIY SOS. Working alongside the cast of DIY SOS and a team of other local tradesmen they helped to transform a house into model home in a matter of days. They are pictured here with Nick Knowles, Mark Millar, Chris Frediani, Julian Perryman and Billy Byrne. Unfortunately while they were working away all week, their trailer was stolen from the drive of a bungalow in Broom Close, where the boys had been working. The wheel

If anyone has any information that would help South Yorkshire Police to apprehend the culprits we would be very grateful if you could contact James Ellis of Arke Property Services on 07786 116104 or South Yorkshire Police. . . .but not TODAY
At our February meeting Joanne Brunt gave a packed audience an amusing but factual account of the way people used home remedies before the advent of the NHS. Her talk “Do you remember...Can We Afford the Doctor” was one of the best we have ever had, thank you Joanne very much indeed. Thanks also to all those who have responded to our appeal in last month’s Tickhill Today with information about people named on the Tickhill National School Continuous Improvement Shield. There are still a few names for whom we have no information so if you do know anything about any of 58 TICKHILL TODAY
the winners (or know somebody who might know something) please contact David Walters (742918), Steve Payne (750141) or see Lesley Nicholson in the Library. Likewise thanks to those who have come forward with WW1 and WW2 memorabilia, however we still need more so if you have something, particularly relating to a Tickhill person please contact David , Steve or Lesley as above. Anything loaned to the Society will be carefully photographed, catalogued and the originals returned to you quickly. Our Archivists have been busy. Being Patient: Press to start - PRESS; Enter month of birth - JUL.; - Enter date of birth - 22; Enter first letter of surname - M; - The surgery knows that I have arrived.
Go into the Waiting Room. Clock shows I am ten minutes early for appointment. Take seat. Six or seven other people waiting. Also queue of four at Reception. Looks like being a long wait. Next to me on the seat is a glossy magazine Good Housekeeping dated October 2010. Look at notices on opposite wall; Minor Injuries Unit; Pregnancy Testing; Give up smoking; Jolly things like diabetes, diarrhoea and dementia. One I can’t read - print too small. Electronic message board over Reception window flashes pieces of information in red letters on a loop: things like wanting our views, having a patients representative panel or what to do if I need a chaperone. This is very occasionally interrupted by a bleep and instruction for somebody to go to some room number. Radio 2 is blaring away on the loudspeaker or maybe a chatty presenter is interviewing some caller and playing a tune they ask for. Why don’t they sometimes have more serious music? Even Classic FM would be a change, although the adverts will be annoying. Another person enters to join the queue but fails to latch the door properly so that, because it has a contrary mind of its own, it slowly swings open to let in a cool draught of air. A while ago I suggested that the door should have a self-closing device fitted, like there is on the other door. The only response when last visited was a notice telling people to close the door so at least our suggestions are being read. Occasionally people dash in to put a repeat prescription form in the box provided. The other people waiting are an assorted lot. I find that I keep 60 TICKHILL TODAY
looking at the range of footwear on show, from flimsy flip-flops to sturdy boots. Funny things, feet. Time passes, Oh so slowly. Looks as though I shall have a late lunch. That little fellow who went in to see a doctor a good half hour ago still hasn’t emerged. Has he collapsed, I wonder. Another bleep and the waiting throng is reduced by one, but then another couple arrives. A woman comes to collect a prescription and the Receptionist has to rifle through a box full of dozens of them. The populace must be surviving on pills and potions. Do I want to go to the toilet? Not quite sure. Better not; what happens if my name is called when I’m in there? I have been sitting here for three quarters of an hour now. It is no wonder that we are known as patients because that is what we certainly have to be - patient, often very patient. Philip Mottram T

.Congratulations to
Alice Johnson Yr 10 who competed in the Rotary Young Musician competition held in Lincoln recently. In a field of ten performers she was successful in securing a place at the Regional finals in York in April. Alice performed two songs “Ireland” from the musical Legally Blonde and “As long as he needs me” from Oliver. She will sing these again in the Regional Final. Good luck Alice! Well done to Megan & Henry Morley, our 11 year old ice skating twins, who passed the Ladies Level 3 and Mens Level 1 NISA tests and good luck in the OPN IJS competition in London. Massive Congratulations to our Junior students who won through to the Regional Final of the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition 2013 and commiserations to our Senior team who also did brilliantly but missed out on qualifying.
The competition was held at St Marys Hill House School in Doncaster with Natasha Simpson, Anna Starbuck & Olivia Wakefield (Senior team) and Emily Hewitt, Nicole Miles and Alice Arnold (Junior Team) competing with STWCC. The Junior team beat Gainsborough Grammar school and will now compete in the Regional finals in Kettering. Although the judges commented that the main speakers were outstanding the Senior team were narrowly beaten by Gainsborough. Well done to all the girls who competed and good luck to the Junior team for the Regional finals!
STWCC’s production of We Will Rock You was a sold out success! Congratulations to Eden Burgon and Holly Hubbard, Year 7, who won stage 2 of the French Spelling Bee competition and now compete in the regional finals at Hull University in April. Bonne chance!!! WOW! After recently entering the "Around the World in 80 Words" creative writing competition STWCC are thrilled that 140 of our students are to have their work published in an anthology!

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - APRIL 2013
We will be holding our Annual Meeting of Electors on 23th April, and we would only be too pleased to see some of the public at our meetings. The Annual Meeting of Electors starts at 6.30, followed by the normal council meetings at 7.00pm. This April issue sees the end of my second financial year as clerk, and as you read this I will be preparing for our Annual Audit. The process is rigorous and all paperwork, minutes, financial records etc are passed to our internal auditor for close inspection. These are stealthily checked and the audit forms are then passed to the external auditor. During this year I have continued to be prudent and hopefully this will be rewarded. This year it is hopefully planned to replace the 20 year old floor covering in the main room at the Pavilion and upgrade the toilets. Over the past 20yrs there has been little more than maintenance carried out, and the Council feel it is time to refurbish and renew some of the fittings and furnishings as they are looking old and dated. It is on this note that I ask local builders/plumbers to contact me in the first instance if they would like to tender for the contract. Much work continues to be made towards the Neighbourhood Plan and I commend the team who have taken it on board. We had a very successful first consultation exhibition in the Parish Room. The results will no doubt call for another consultation. I have also decided to organise a Community Action e mail system by which I will trying to distribute as much information throughout to residents and businesses and if you would like to join in please e mail me and I will add you to 64 TICKHILL TODAY
the ever increasing list. After much discussion and deliberation Public toilets are now available in the library for use, so please use them. It increases footfall in the library which may be an asset in the future if changes are mooted. As some of you will be aware there have been many changes and cut backs in DMBC and many resources are stretched, or reduced or even none existent now, but nonetheless we must all continue to strive for our own community so any repairs or complaints please report to the number below. Please do not ignore it: report it, which includes anything from litter to dog foul, to potholes in the road. Any D.M.B.C. Issue can be reported to 736000 Or Email customer. services@doncaster.gov.uk I can be contacted by e mail tickhillcouncil@gmail.com YOUR DISTRICT COUNCILLORS ARE: PATRICIA BARTLETT, Tel 01302 310575, Email patricia.bartlett@ doncaster.gov.uk BOB FORD, Tel 01302 743804, Email bob.ford@doncaster.gov.uk BARBARA HOYLE, Tel 01302 742676, Email Barbara.hoyle@doncaster. gov.uk YOUR LOCAL MP CAROLINE FLINT Meteor House, First Ave, Hayfield Lane, Auckley DN9 3GA. Section 106 PACT meetings Agreements Background
The next meetings for the PACT/ Have Your Say sessions are: Thursday 4th April:
Tickhill Town Council is taking this opportunity to undertake a consultation to gain ideas from local residents of Tickhill on how the Section 106 Monies for the Common Lane Development at Tickhill can best be spent What are section 106 monies? Under Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, contributions can be sought from developers towards the costs of providing community and social infrastructure. In Doncaster, Section 106 Agreements have been used for a wide range of developments.
Four specific categories exist in Doncaster : 1 2 3 4
Affordable Housing Public Open Space Transport Miscellaneous
The monies that have been agreed for the Tickhill Common Lane development is for Category 2 : Public Open Space and the wording in the agreement allows Doncaster Council to use the open space subsidy for the provision / enhancement of public open space within Tickhill The total monies available amounts to £53,200, which has been designated as non project and non site specific, therefore, it can be used for the purpose outlined above anywhere within Tickhill Project suggestion put forward to the Town Council: Replacement of the sand surface 68 TICKHILL TODAY
at St Mary’s play area Tickhill with appropriate tarmac play area surfacing meeting all health and safety requirements. The reason for wanting to get rid of the sand is that it is being soiled by cat faeces. Any child coming into contact with these, stands the risk of contracting Toxoplasmosis which can give flu like symptoms. It is also dangerous to a pregnant woman, who can transfer this infection to her foetus through the placenta. The cost of this project is estimated to be between £10,000 and £15,000. Tickhill residents will find a voting slip inside this edition of Tickhill Today on which you can register your support for this proposal and make any other comment. Spare copies are available at the Library. Please take a couple of minutes to complete the form and hand it into Tickhill Library or to any Tickhill Town Councillor.
