welcome to the MARCH 2013 edition of Tickhill Today.
Being a mother is one of the highest salaried jobs... since the payment is pure love. ~Mildred B. Vermont With Mother’s Day approaching I thought I would look for a quote about mothers this month and came across this lovely one. Being a mum can be hard at times (particularly during half term which is when I am writing this)! However the rewards are many and varied, from the thrill of first steps, to the satisfaction of children spreading their wings as independent young people and then moving on to creating families of their own. As Mother’s Day approaches give a thought for all Mums at whatever stage of motherhood they may be, and don’t forget those around you who no longer have their mums to treat this Mother’s Day. The next issue will be delivered from 28th March – Good Friday. Anything that you would like to be included must be with me by Thursday 14th March.
Best wishes, Paula x

The Parish Room
Sir Thomas Wharton We Will Rock You Performance ON THE 11TH of February Year 5 at Wadworth Primary School went to see a play - We Will Rock You at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College. The performance was hilarious and the actors who performed worked really hard on this. The costumes were super and funny plus they had very bright colours. Year fives liked this performance very much and would recommend it to other people. They have achieved a lot and should be proud. Everyone in the play was doing their very best. We liked the expression in their emotions and in their actions. Our favourite actor and actress were Galileo and the Killer Queen. Our favourite song was A Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Our favourite part was when the Killer Queen was singing and the back ground dances were great with poles. The We Will Rock You performance was not what we were expecting. It was fantastic. 8

Please come along and listen to the ideas already put forward, and have the chance to make your own suggestions on how you see the future in Tickhill. Slimming World continues to help with the post-Christmas weight gains. Chris Cheetham, a relatively new Consultant, has her own success story and is now happy to pass on her experience to others in a sympathetic, positive way. Snow White & the Seven Dwarves ON JANUARY 4TH, 60 very excited children and staff went to the Civic Theatre in Doncaster. “Oh no they didn’t!” “Oh yes they did” This was the annual pantomime visit for Key Stage 1 children. The visit is the start of the fairy tale topic for the Spring Term. In the past the children have visited the Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield as well as the Doncaster Civic Theatre. We have seen wonderful shows including Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. This year was the turn of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. The children were wowed by singing, dancing and the obligatory villain. On their return to school the children wrote their own accounts as well as acting out a variety of fairy tales. We can’t wait until next year to visit the new Civic Theatre. In the meantime the children will be dressing up as characters from their favourite books for Book Day in March. Maybe we will have our own Snow White and the Seven Dwarves! 12 TICKHILL TODAY

OF THE MONTH

Loki HELLO FROM US all at the Sanctuary. The start of the year has had its ups and downs. We have had quite an influx of dogs and cats coming to us over Christmas which is usual for this time of year. What is unusual is that lots of pedigree dogs are with us for various reasons. We have some beautiful Labradors, German Shepherd and smaller pedigrees all needing loving homes. If you feel you would like to spend your life with a pet whether it be a dog or a cat please call and see us we are open 2-4 during the week and 1-4 at a weekend. Closed on a Tuesday. If you also have time on your hand and need to get fit can we suggest you come and walk some of our dogs during the day. Mornings are better before we open or any time on a Tuesday. It gives us all an incentive to walk if we have a four legged friend at our side & you will be surprised at how much the fresh air and exercise will help lift your spirits especially now the weather is getting a little better. If you would like further information please call us 01302711330 or 07969203206.

TIPS for Showing Your Home YOU’VE PUT YOUR home up for sale and you receive that all important call from your Estate Agent informing you’ve got a viewing. This is your chance to let your home shine and help your potential buyer realise the benefits of living there. HERE ARE SOME helpful tips for showing your home: 1) MAXIMISE THE light in every room to make your home feel more welcoming. Before your potential
buyer arrives draw back all blinds and curtains and switch on ceiling lights and lamps. 2) A WARM home is an inviting home, in these colder months makes sure your heating is on and your home is warm and cosy. If your house is unoccupied then aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before the viewing to turn up the heating. 3) REMOVE CLUTTER and clean your home from top to bottom
taking particular care to make your bathrooms and kitchen SPARKLE. 4) DRESS KEY areas such as Dining Tables with crockery and fresh flowers for a homely feel. 5) 1ST IMPRESSIONS , move your cars off the drive, check your front door is clean and if you have a doorbell, check it’s working.

property 6) ALLOW YOUR potential buyers to imagine themselves living there, give some thought to the key benefits of your home and bring them into conversation –the sunny patio is perfect for BBQ’s or the luxury bathroom as a fantastic place to unwind after a hectic day. 7) ALWAYS HAVE keys to hand for areas such as Garages or Outside Storage. 8) YOUR HOME has had a life and many rooms may have had various uses over the years. Why not give your viewers a feel for your homes versatility by creating a Home Book. Pack it full of photographs illustrating the various uses for rooms, your garden at different times of the year, the local village fete last summer. 9) KEEP SAFE – Put away any valuables or cash. Never allow yourself to get trapped in a room
without exit. Let a neighbour or friends know you’re showing your home and make arrangement to call and check on you within a prescribed time period. 10) USE THE professional expertise
of your Estate Agent, if you’re not comfortable with doing the viewings than ask your Agent to carry out your viewings, whilst you go out. Simon Chandler |www. myplaceyourhome.co.uk

Shrove Tuesday, the Year of the Snake and St. Valentine THE LAST WEEK before half term was a busy and exciting one in school. On the Tuesday 12th February 2013 we were joined by Mrs CanningsClough and members of the Tickhill Residents Association for the 11th Annual Pancake Race. The pupils in Years 5 and 6 had great fun and the competition was fierce. The races were full of the usual thrills and spills and the younger pupils had great fun cheering for their favourites. The eventual winners were Lauren Fields and Max Davidson who were presented with their prizes by Mrs CanningsClough and Mayor Ray Hill. We would like to thank Mrs Cannings-Clough, Ray Hill and all of the Residents Association members who turned out on a bitterly cold day. All competitors received a certificate to mark the occasion and a chocolate treat. Well done to everybody! On the following day our Reception Class celebrated the Chinese New Year – the Year of the Snake. A Chinese banquet was held and delicious prawn crackers, noodles and chicken proved tricky to eat with chopsticks, but they all persevered. The final event of the week was the Valentine’s Disco which was 24 TICKHILL TODAY
well-attended; it was not love in the air but the aroma of hot-dogs that wafted around the school! The pupils had a great time dancing and socialising before the half term break. Thank you to all of the Home and School Association for their help and support in arranging the disco and other fundraising events in school this term.

WRIGGLE WRIGGLE A NEW DANCE craze perhaps? Well maybe … if you’re a worm that is! In my opinion, worms have to be the unsung heroes of the garden. They only eat what I don’t want, they tidy up leaves from the borders by dragging them down into the soil, and who else improves our soil structure by adding air holes, incorporating organic matter en route and even provides food for the birds (sorry worms!), all for free? As far as I’m aware, garden worms don’t have their own ‘worm awareness week’, they just carry on doing what they do best, quietly making beautifully rich, dark brown garden goodness. You may be happy to leave the worms well alone, merrily munching away in the compost heap, but why not have a go at making your own worm villa (known as a wormery), or buying a pre- made version online? Most kids love worms
so it’s a great activity to do as a family, or indeed if you enjoy the idea of reducing landfill and nourishing your garden at the same time. Worms will happily nosh through your kitchen waste. They’re not that fussy but they don’t like acidic things such as citrus peels, garlic and onion, but things they do love (strangely) are teabags, eggshell and cold mashed potato, (I’ve heard that for worms these foods are like us eating oysters…they erm… put them in the mood for a little wriggle wriggle). That said, worms never over populate and are able to regulate their breeding actively in line with their environment. Bizarrely they can also change gender to suit the local talent on offer!
does not get too hot or cold. Their home can be insulated in winter, or moved into the garage. The resulting compost is rich and when scattered into the borders makes a highly concentrated soil improver, as does the liquid ‘wee tea’ which can be accessed via the tap at the base of the wormery. Diluted at 1:10 with water it makes a great natural liquid plant food too.
They don’t like extremes in temperature, so I’d advise keeping them in a shaded corner which

you to dig up his lawn to create a vegetable plot! Taking an allotment is no longer an option for many, according to recent figures from the National Society of Allotment & Leisure Gardeners more than 90,000 people are on allotment waiting lists in the UK. Here in Tickhill while the local council are doing everything they can to create new allotments and reduce their waiting list the reality is that anyone joining the list now is unlikely to get an allotment anytime soon. This had led to a surge of people up and down the country signing up to garden share schemes that are helping would-be growers connect with nearby garden owners. Many garden owners who join are either too elderly or too busy to manage their own plots, and by sharing their garden they don't have to watch it turn into a jungle of weeds. While no money changes hands in garden sharing, those involved often have an agreement to divide up the fruit and veg produced.
Tickhill Town Council would like to launch their own garden share scheme. They would love to link those wanting somewhere to grow their own fruit and veg with residents who have a spare piece of garden that they would be willing to share. The area doesn’t have to be large – not everyone requires something allotment sized, just somewhere to grow a few rows of carrots, courgettes, and radishes and a wigwam or two
of runner beans or sweat peas! Maybe you aren’t as young as you were and can no longer manage your garden, maybe you work long hours and underestimated how much time it would take to care for a large garden when you bought your home, or maybe the person who used to care for your garden is no longer with us, and your garden has been left to its own devices and could do with someone to tend it again. Whatever the situation, if you have a piece of garden you would be willing to share then please contact Tickhill Town Council and express your interest in registering for the scheme. This will not obligate you – but will allow you to find out more and see if a suitable match can be found for you. Likewise if you would like the use of a piece of garden in your neighbourhood and would be willing to share a few of your crops with the home owner then also register your interest. The aim of Garden Share is to link committed, enthusiastic growers with local garden owners who are happy to share, and see their gardens being used more productively. Many of those taking part experience the pleasure of seeing a lovely developing veggie plot, and the sense of community in being part of a sharing initiative. To find out more and register your interest contact in confidence the Clerk to the Council, Mrs Margaret Cannings-Clough on 01302 745372 or email tickhillcouncil@gmail.com

Top Tips for your Lawn this Spring Like everything else in the garden, our lawns are learning FROM AS to cope with the ups and downs of climate change. LITTLE AS Our lawns take a real battering as a result and we ENT PER TREATM expect them to come back year after year. inc. VAT Well, they will - we take it for granted. Their ability to bounce back is amazing but that doesn’t mean they don’t need some help because every year it gets that bit more difficult. With a little time and effort you can have a handsome and healthy lawn for your family to enjoy which is the envy of all your friends and neighbours.
£15.00
Here are our six tips to get your lawn off to a flying start.
Spot the GreenThumb lawn
Clean Up
Rake away those dead leaves, twigs and branches. The less debris on the lawn, the healthier it will be, not to mention the real benefit from increasing its exposure to sunlight.
Lawns don’t like shade Take a good look at those border plants, shrubs and trees – they all have a habit of encroaching on the lawn’s space and weakening it by denying it light. Then … get the secateurs out!
Is your mower up to the job?
Cle ar up leav es
Check your mower is up to the job - it’s not too late to get it serviced. Make sure the blade is sharp and keep it that way by buying a spare and swapping it over as the season progresses. Remember to raise the height of your first cut to just ‘top’ the grass – cutting it too low will put the grass into stress and set it back - just when you want to encourage it.
Does your lawn need some T.L.C? The ground starts to warm now so it’s a good time to repair those bare patches that always appear over winter. Carefully rake the patch to create a bed, sow the seeds with a little top-soil and don’t let them dry out. They’ll germinate in a few days. Don’t mow or feed them until a few weeks have passed and they’re well established.
Hand-pick those early weeds.
Early weed growth
If hand-picking isn’t your thing and you don’t fancy buying, storing and handling chemicals, get the professionals in.
Look out for sickly-looking patches. Leatherjackets, the larval form of the ‘Daddy Long-legs’ can devastate a lawn in spring as they chomp through the roots of the grass. If you suspect a problem, get professional advice.

Yes, there was a team of ladies I remember, because my Aunty Maud was one of them. They were bossed about by one of the church wardens. That would be Billy Havers who had his finger in everything. Lived up Lindrick somewhere and kept lots of cats. He married that Molly Spencer who lived in Church Lane. And this sort of talk can go on for hours. The speakers, between them, knew everybody, and what’s more, knew most of their private business, where they lived, how old they were, who all their relatives were and what happened to them. This is total recall and local oral history on a grand scale. It is a treat to overhear these exchanges which we incomers cannot hope to emulate. We can only stand on the sidelines and admire the performance. With today’s more fragmented society when people leave their home town to go to university or find work elsewhere, this kind of local memory store is unlikely to be replicated which will be a loss. THINKING DAY IS the day when we think of Brownies all over the world. We celebrate Thinking Day on 22nd February every year, and when it does not fall within half term the girls wear their uniform to school. The date was chosen as it was the birthday of Scouting and Guiding Founder Robert Baden-Powell and of Olave Baden-Powell, his wife. In Tickhill we usually hold a small service where every girl is given a small cardboard flag and a candle, we light our candles and turn all the lights off,
Celebrate Thinking Day
in turn we ‘think’ about the brownies in the country of the flag they hold. Also this year we were invited to an International Day in Doncaster. 12 brownies took part and we played games from India and New Zealand, we made a Japanese floating candle and we sang songs from Australia. I’m not sure who enjoyed it the most, us, or the Brownies. We have made Chinese Lanterns for Chinese New Year and Tam O’Shanter badges for Burns’ night. We have also enjoyed pancakes on
Mother’s Union Meeting OUR FIRST MEETING of the New Year at the Library was very well attended. Later in the month our new Branch Leader Eluned Foulds was commissioned on Sunday 20th January during the 10.30 am communion service. A contingent of MU members were there to support her.
Our next event will be on Ash Wednesday 13th February, which will be our Simple Lenten lunch. This will be in the Parish Room from 12.30pm to 1.30pm No tickets needed, donations will be gratefully accepted. Proceeds will be given to a MU Literacy Project in Malawi. Everyone welcome!
Shrove Tuesday. We have even made dens out of newspaper in the scout hut. Quite an eventful half term! I am just starting to organise a Pack Holiday in Walesby to take place in September. Walesby Activity Centre has a river so we will be making rafts on the river, we will also have a chance to learn some circus skills. Clare Carr, Brown Owl, 07780 703012

Horticultural Society THE ANNUAL GENERAL Meeting on the 31st January proved to be a successful and enjoyable evening. Chairman Ray Hill reviewed the year thanking a number of members for their special efforts ensuring the smooth running of meetings and events, and all members, friends and local businesses for their continued support. The 2012 accounts revealed a small profit for the year, and the annual subscription will remain at £7 - not bad for ten speaker meetings with coffee and biscuits. Eric Brough read out his list of speakers for 2013, covering an excellent range of subjects-- we are in for another good year.

The committee were all happy to continue and were re-elected en bloc. After the business the pie and pea supper went down well and Ray’s quiz caused a few laughs. The second speaker meeting of the year will be held in the Methodist Schoolroom on Thursday 28th March starting at 7.15p.m, when our speaker will be Steven Hickman of the Hoyland Plant Centre. Since Steve last spoke to us in October 2007 on “Winter flowering baskets and planters” he has developed into the leading authority in the U.K. on”Agapanthus and Tulbaghia” winning a range of gold medals for his displays. We are very pleased to have him back. There will be plants for sale. Visitors welcome. £3 Phil Thomas

Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan AS THIS COPY goes to print
before our public consultation on February 28/March 1 (hopefully many of you called in and made your contribution to the discussions) this article reflects instead on an earlier effort to plan ahead in our parish. I have been looking again at the Planning for Real exercise carried out in Tickhill in 2003. The number of residents who put forward ideas was similar to those who responded last summer to the first Neighbourhood Plan consultation. Then, as now, traffic and transport issues topped the list, followed next by leisure and environment. The 2003 exercise covered a wider range of issues than we can include in the Neighbourhood Plan; comments on such areas as crime, training opportunities and health would have to be passed on to the appropriate authorities. Interestingly in 2003 there were few comments on housing; the majority of them opposed any new house building. In 2012 we have had many comments suggesting a wish for Tickhill to remain at its present size, but a few aware of a need for ‘affordable houses’, however these are defined. Recent local house building certainly isn’t in that category! One possible challenge is to look for somewhere
that modest homes for rent or shared ownership could be built. The top 3 specifics requested in 2003 were (1) slow down through traffic and restrict or ban HGVs, (2) tackle the litter problem and (3) provide a skateboarding park. While there are no easy answers to any of these, your responses in 2012 suggest that we still have a lot to do! My personal view is that our Neighbourhood Plan should have a short list of specifics (an Implementation Plan separate from the Neighbourhood Plan itself) which are capable of being achieved fairly quickly and identify clear responsibilities for doing them. Of course there will also be mediumand long-term aspirations. There is no point in doing all the work if it ends up collecting dust! As the Neighbourhood Plan – if all goes well and it is approved – has legal status, it really should have some teeth! John Hoare.

Sir Thomas Wharton Community College converted to an Academy in the Co-operative group on 1 February 2013. I am very proud that our college has joined an organisation which is committed to developing a dynamic and active co-operative schools movement in the UK. The decision to convert to an academy was not taken lightly but at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College we continuously strive to raise standards and achievement and I believe that acquiring academy status will support us in our endeavours to become an even better school. In an ever-changing educational landscape, I felt that this path will give us greater autonomy and the freedom to move forward in a way that best serves the needs of our students. The Co-operative College’s values and its vision to provide young people with the skills, qualifications and knowledge to succeed completely mirror our views. Our joint mission is:
“To put education at the heart of co-operation and co-operation at the heart of education” I believe that our future success lies in the positive partnership between staff, parents, carers, students and governors and that together we can make Sir Thomas Wharton Community College a school to be proud of – a school at the heart of our community. Congratulations to form DML who came up with a great idea to photograph their pets and turn the pictures into a calendar which they sold to family and friends for Christmas, raising £41 for the school’s charity, RSPCA. Getting Technical
CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE now the proud owner of the
latest Blather Multi Functional 763X Personal Computer, Mark II with Whizz-Bang Hypertension Enhancer. If you can get it started it will give you several hours of service before seizing up. It includes a bonus pack of pre-installed software which includes a Survey of Coptic Churches and A Beginner’s Guide to Sanskrit. Important Mysterious Note: The Blather is configured to use Z73492, or higher, processing chip running at 289 Hz with a defrost cycle. Do not store in a freezer compartment. Do not unpack the box if any items are missing but return immediately to the supplier for little chance of a refund. Opening the box will invalidate the warranty.
Further News of Limestone Hill Mill DUNCAN AND IMELDA Dewar were delighted to recently receive notification from the Federation of Master builders that the renovators of the Mill James Bratton and Co had won the award for the medium Renovation projects prize for the whole of the Yorkshire and Trent region. Brattons are now to be considered for the National award and Duncan and Imelda as their clients will be attending the Master builder of the year awards ceremony on the 20th of March 2013 at the Westminster Bridge hotel. The awards are to be announced by architect and TV presenter George Clarke. This is a huge accolade for those involved with the restoration of the Mill and here’s hoping for their success. 44 TICKHILL TODAY
The contents of the box should include some at least of the following items: HDMI high velocity cables with twin USB connectors which with luck may be suitable for this model, a 1500 page User’s Manual with 500 page Terms and Conditions, a Short Guide to the User’s Manual with appendices and a Simple Set-up Guide to the Short Guide for the exceptionally inept or semi-literate and several cubic metres of bio-degradable, bubble wrap packing. Having successfully unpacked the computer you immediately discover that because of the power consumption of this model you will also need the auxiliary software package for the Blather 2000x with 300 Gigabytes of memory for the laser-enabled superoscillator. If at this stage you do not have a degree in Electrical Engineering it is high time to acquire one.
This is because you will need to connect the high capacity servo cable (A) to the appropriate socket (G) and activate the co-axial starter mechanism if you need access to the Internet using the Taser enabled multi-media interface link. Next, connect the Wi-Fi / Optical mouse to the keyboard and use the Yellow and Blue cable to the Input socket on the Monitor and press the Install button. This should take about three days to activate after which you will need to re-boot. Please note that the Diatribe modulator wires are designated according to international standards as follows: Blue = live or neutral, Red = power control and Black and Green = possible injury. If at this stage you are quite reasonably contemplating suicide it is advisable to take a couple of Paracetamol and lie down in a darkened room. A sensible alternative is to get some fish and chips and watch the snooker on the telly. Philip Mottram

New Healthier Fitter You WHERE DID JANUARY and February go I hear you ask? Probably the same place as your New Year’s Resolution, Diet or plans for a new healthy fitter you. Over the coming months I aim to help us all shed a few extra lbs and help give you control of your weight, health & wellbeing. First things first, we need to accept that your Health & Fitness is different to your weight management. Of course they over lap but your Health & Fitness level is controlled by your activity levels and your weight is most definitely controlled by your consumption!
The first step of taking control of your weight is by understanding what you’re putting in your body. I’m not
on about complex carbohydrates or your daily amino acids; I’m talking about calories (Kcal’s). If a healthcare professional tells you should be eating 2000kcals a day do you have any idea what 2000kcals looks like in food and drink. Without knowing what you aiming for how do you expect to achieve your aim or goal? Pop into Bawtry Health & Fitness Studio any Tues or Thurs and I’ll be happy to work out what daily calorie total you should be aiming for. Following NHS guidelines I can guarantee 1-2 lb weight
loss a week; equivalent to 4 stone a year! Sounds good? Imagine you at Christmas this year 4 stone lighter! So first top tip of the year, get to grips with what you are eating calorie wise; you might only be a chocolate chip cookie over your daily target or you might be 1000kcals over!
TOP TIPS
Breakfast is a must! ONCE YOU HAVE an idea of what you’re eating lets help your body out, not work against it. I am often asked “what’s the most common factor you see dealing with obese patients at Rotherham NHS”. Simple; 80% of obese patients don’t eat Breakfast. For all kids and adults reading this PLEASE eat breakfast, it kick starts everything! Metabolism & hormonal changes both drive and regulate 48 TICKHILL TODAY
your hungry. Breakfast is King! Next month I will explain why Metabolism is so important and why without regular physical activity those lbs will be a lot slower to drop off than WITH physical activity. Remember the NHS guidelines for Physical activity for an adult, over 18, is 30mins x 5 times a week of moderate aerobic activity, Eg Brisk Walking or Cycling.

Don’t waste an opportunity to be in charge of your own health! ON AVERAGE 4 medical appointments per day are not attended by patients. Most of these are booked on the same day. These are wasted appointments and opportunities. Increasingly patients are being asked to take more res responsibility for their own health and their own actions. Failing to attend could now have implications. The Tickhill and Colliery PPG is backing The Practice in the implementation of a DID NOT ATTEND POLICY (DNA). Repeated instances of DNA by a patient could result in them being asked to find another doctor. Respect yourself and other people, if you can’t attend, cancel. THE EARL OF DONCASTER LAUNCHES GUINEA PIG NIGHT 2nd Thursday of each month sees diners consume, contemplate & choose what makes the grade No one really wants to be experimented on, but a local hotel has launched an event to show that being a guinea pig doesn’t necessarily have to be a glum experience – it can, in fact, be one filled with gastronomic delights. Guinea Pig Night, created by The Earl of Doncaster Hotel, will take place on the second Thursday of every month and diners attending, will not only be able to sample a beautifully cooked three course meal by a talented chef, but they’ll also have the final say as to what dishes make it onto the new menu. The catch? Guest diners won’t know what they’re going to get. “Creating a great menu and serving food of the highest quality are obviously what any hotel strives for but at The Earl, we really just want to develop a dining experience with a really personal aspect to it,” explains Fraser Wolstencroft, Hotel Manager. “So allowing diners to taste new dishes and make the final decision as to what goes on the new menu, we think, is the perfect way of achieving it,” he continues. “After all, it’s the public who choose to dine with us, so it’s only right that they participate in picking the menu we provide.” Served in Café Bar Concerto and £15 per person, including a Three course meal prepared by The Earl’s resident talented and rosette winning chef, Paul Thompson and a Glass of House Wine “After the recent refurbishment to restore the hotel to all the splendour of its original Art Deco roots, Café Bar Concerto is, without a doubt, a simply a stunning destination for any diner,” Fraser continues. “We really wanted to go that extra mile though and what better way to do it than creating not only a beautiful ambience, but also by serving a menu that they’ve helped to make themselves?” Guinea Pig Night takes place on the second Thursday of every month in Café Bar Concerto between 6pm and 10pm. For more information about The Earl of Doncaster Hotel and their fabulous rooms and events, please visit www.theearl.co.uk, or telephone 01302 361371

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - MARCH 2013
JANUARY AND FEBRUARY
has seen much activity in the Clerk’s Council Office. We have been advised not to increase the Precept this year so as a Council we have worked together to produce a budget, to cut expenditure where we can, to try and accommodate the increases that we cannot alter. So as the same as last year, our Precept will be set at £42,000.00 with no increase to residents. This month sees the financial year coming to an end, and it seems hardly possible that this will be the end of my second year as clerk. During these two years we have seen many changes at the Pavilion which I hope are to the good. This last year we have seen the upgrading of the kitchen at the Pavilion and this next year I hope to make upgrades to the toilets and floors. With prudency I am sure we can achieve this. With each improvement come more lettings, which in turn bring in more revenue. Our Pavilion is ideal for children’s parties (washable floor etc) so please consider us when organising your activities. This year we are trying to set aside a small amount of money to fund local community projects and I am also hopeful to be able to offer this Christmas, on behalf of Tickhill Town Council, a small award to a Young Person of the year. The choice will be made by the residents of Tickhill and nominations will be asked for later in the year. This is aimed at bringing us all together to celebrate their achievements. Please keep an eye on the notice boards, website and in this magazine for further details. Also we hope to see the Launch of Garden Share, which will be supported by the Town Council and I am ever hopeful to find more allotments for you keen gardeners. Please keep your ears and eyes 64 TICKHILL TODAY
open for potential sites. During the bad weather we have recently experienced we have had two of our Councillors train as snow wardens. The cost was met by them and they have carried out the duties totally voluntarily. They were asked to try to keep public walkways gritted and I hope this has been of benefit to some of us. We have received a letter of thanks from The Salvation Army in Maltby for the Christmas collection from the Buttercross Carol service. This last year you all kindly donated £1592.44 which will be divided between three charities: The Salvation Army Maltby corps, A Community Fund, and Central Funds. A big thank you.
