From The Editor of TAN Magazine Editor: David K. Ewen, M.Ed. I am a publisher and a promoter of authors. I have been since 1994 and have shown the passion for it. I am also an author and am fully aware of the challenges to reaching an interested reader. I fully get the idea of trying to sell books and making my book a success. Yeah, I’ve had the good times and the bad times. And I remember both. Since 1998, I’ve taught book publishing at a variety locations in the six New England States. My more recent teaching efforts over the past five years has covered eleven colleges and universities in four states. I’ve talked to a lot of potential and successful authors. It has been my effort to make people authors and successful booksellers, I pause and mutter to myself, “I don’t know“ and then gaze out the window. As I gaze, I say again, “I don’t know”. My wife and I know that I’ll never I’ll never get rich at it. That was never the plan or intent. It truly really wasn’t. But I keep doing it and always will. It’s been my passion. That is why I do it. So let me continue. TAN Magazine has been the latest effort to support my fellow authors and publishers. me to do it. It’s not only for you, but for my passion.

KS Brooks (Kat) 10:04am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Good morning KS. How are you? 10:04amKS
I'm great! How are you? Please call me Kat 10:07am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Thank you for joining me. Tell me about your books. 10:10amKS
Good morning ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.. I currently have two books in print: an action-adventure novel," Lust for Danger," and an educational children's book, "The Mighty Oak and Me." 10:10am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
That's great. Tell me about Lust for Danger and The Mighty Oak and Me. 10:12amKS
Lust for Danger is the first book in my "Agent Night Adventure Series." Agent Kathrin Night is an anti-terrorist agent working for the United Nations who uncovers an eco-terrorist plot of sorts. It's a fast-paced thriller that has been compared to the works of Clive Cussler and Ian Fleming, but with a female lead. 10:14amKS
The Mighty Oak and Me is about a 300 year old oak tree I had in my backyard in Maryland. I felt it was important to teach children the worth of that great tree, and all trees. 10:14am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What are your readers saying about your books? 10:14amKS
The most common thing I hear from readers is "I want more." 10:16amKS
I've been getting great responses from teachers and students over the Mighty Oak and Me. 10:16am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
That's a good thing to hear. What do you think of that? 10:17amKS
I'm thrilled overall, and especially pleased that teachers think enough of The Mighty Oak and Me to present it to their classrooms. I think that is the biggest compliment a writer can receive. 10:18amKS
They are clamoring for the next book, which is a geography-themed book due out in January. 10:19am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
If someone wants more information about your books, where would they go? 10:19amKS
I've got a special web site for The Mighty Oak and Me which is www.TheMightyOakandMe.com. The hub of my writing information is available at www.KSBrooks.com I put a media page up for you this morning so you could download images without having to hunt for them. That is at www.ksbrooks.com/media.htm 10:20am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Kat, thank you for joining me today. 10:21amKS

Eva Gordon 10:02am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Good morning Eva. Thank you for joining me. Tell me a little about your writing. 10:04amEva
I write paranormal romance and fantasy novels. I'm a werewolf and wolf lore expert. My paranormal series is the Wolf Maiden Chronicles and my fantasy series is the Realm Trilogy. 10:04am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
WOW - I see a lot happening with werewolf stories. Tell me what makes yours special and has that special magic. 10:06amEva
I was inspired by volunteering at a wolf sanctuary and my degrees are in biology and zoology. My love of mythology and lore helped me create a werewolf universe. 10:07am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What books do you have out now? 10:08amEva
Werewolf Sanctuary which leads to my 'werewolfhistoricals' Beast Warrior: Viking Werewolf is my first 'werewolfhistorical' and takes place in the year 840 AD. Werewolf Sanctuary has recieved great acclaim and 5 stars from Bitten by Books Beast Warrior was just released last month and is already reviewed well. 10:09am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Tell me what your readers are saying about Beast Warrior. 10:10amEva
If you like history, Vikings, epic romance and of course werewolves you will love it 10:11amEva
They like the Viking adventure and the passionate love between the Viking werewolf and his human mate. 10:11am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.

Why not? Go right ahead. 10:07am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Good morning Erik, thank you for joining me. Tell me a little about your work. 10:08amErik
I wrote my first book in college. It was a vampire mystery where the lead character is the vampire. I wrote the sequel almost immediately and got them published together right after I graduated. 10:13am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What is the title of your latest book? 10:14amErik
If you mean last one I published, "Bury Them at the Crossroads." If you mean one I wrote most recently, it's an unrelated different series, and untitled. Titles are the toughest part. 10:15am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Tell me about Bury Them At The Crossroads? 10:15amErik
Let's see. It's been a while. It takes place in Baltimore, namely in the vampire and werewolf population. The city is, like many others, a staging ground between the two factions. The vamps run the urban areas while the wolves keep a tribal structure outside in Baltimore County. Erik sent Goodness good karma to Amy Doyle Backus 10:17am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Now you have another book untitled you had mentioned. What is that about? 10:18amErik
Norse mythology in modern times. The lead character there is Curtis Draken, a United States diplomat living in

New York, and the son of Tyr, Norse god of war and negotiations. 10:19am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What have some of your readers said about your books? 10:22amErik
So far so good. I pay attention to the negative more than I should, like typos and line-mistakes (I blame the publisher, which I can explain). I think I used too flowery language in "Crossroads," so Draken's story is more...down to earth? I guess that's the right term. 10:23amErik
The readers I do have liked it, in that it was a suspenseful read. 10:23am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
If someone wants to learn more about you and your books, where would they go? 10:25amErik
Authorhouse publishing for Crossroads, or Deviant art for Draken. My online name there is "Velociraptor-king." 10:26am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What is the web site? 10:26amErik
deviantart.com or authorhouse.com 10:27am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What do you like about your writing? 10:29amErik
I love mythology, and honestly researching any and all subjects. 10:29am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What do you think readers want from you? What style, characters and story. 10:29amErik
Making fun characters and plots are all well and good, but I like finding out some bizarre fact and going, "Hey that's cool! I ought to use it." Hmm... I like ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, and extraordinary people in ordinary circumstances. 10:30am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What kind of writer would you like to be 5 years from now? 10:31amErik
A weird hybrid of fantasy and mystery. But not another "Tolkein rip-off." 10:32am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
So how will you be different? 10:33amErik
I like using the real world for starters. Even if I try to make a "fantasy kingdom," it's still on planet Earth in a weird way. I collect, for example, the "Weird US" books, and that provides plenty of inspiration for strangeness in our backyard. 10:36am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.

Good morning Debra. Thank you for joining me. Tell us a little about you and your writing. 9:58amDebra
Good morning ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.. Thank you for inviting me. My first novel just came out in March. Desperate Journey is a western historical romance set in 1867 along the Old Chisholm Trail. That was the year the trail opened up, so it was still pretty rough. 10:00am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
How did you come to write in the time 1867? 10:00amDebra
A Desperate Journey was a finalist in the American Title II contest put on by Dorchester Publishing and Romantic Times magazine. I chose that year because it was the year the trail opened up. The trail spans from Kansas to Texas and that was the route my heroine had to take to get her son back. 10:01am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Tell us a little about the characters in your book. 10:04amDebra
Sally is a married woman (or believes she is) with two children. She comes home after helping a neighbor give birth and discovers her husband Luke has run off to Texas, taking her son Matthew with him. He's gone through all their money and their farm is being auctioned off. She decides to go after them to get her son back. 10:06am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What do your readers like about the characters in your book? 10:06amDebra
Rob arrives in town just before she leaves and he's looking for Luke because Rob spent several years in jail for a crime he didn't commit and it was Luke who set him up. They team up along with Moss, an old mule skinner and head to Texas to find Luke and the boy. 10:07amDebra
Readers seem to really get a kick out of ole Moss, the mule skinner. He's a cranky old man who mutters to his mules. (I admit he was fun to write.) And they root for Sally to get her son back and for Luke to get what he deserves. 10:08am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Overall, what do your readers love about your books? 10:13amDebra is offline. 10:14amDebra is online. 10:14amDebra
This is my first book and when I wrote it I wasn't as aware of the "rules" of genre writing. So the comments from readers have been very interesting to me. I've had readers say they don't really read romance but they enjoyed mine and I've had readers say they don't really read western but they enjoy mine. I believe this is because it's a bit of a blend of western and romance and I've been told there's a strong storyline driving through the middle of that. What I'm hoping my readers will always say is that Debra writes a good story. That is my only goal. To write a good story. 10:15am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Do you have plans for your next story? 10:20amDebra
Yes. I currently have eight stories in the works. One is another western, novella length that I'm rewriting for my editor and fingers crossed she'll buy it. Another is a contemporary romance set on a cruise ship. (I worked as a travel consultant and love to write about travel.) Those are the two closest to being polished enough to cross an

Rowena Cherry 9:49am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Hi Rowena, Thank you for joining me. Tell me a little about your writing. 9:50amRowena
I write humorous, satirical futuristic romance which is not set in the future My first book was a gentle spoof of historical bodice rippers 9:50am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What is the title of your latest book? Tell us a little about it. 9:51amRowena
Of course, being a gentle spoof, nothing got ripped except the hero's sleeve when he decided that he needed a muscle shirt to impress the heroine Well, that was Forced Mate, my first. All my books are titled after chess moves or positions. My latest book is Knight's Fork Knight's Fork started with the premise, what if Helen of Troy and Paris were entirely innocent? 9:52am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What are some people saying about your books? 9:53amRowena
My "Paris" is an intergalactic Knight of an order. He is rather like a warrior monk, and is a virgin. A queen in need of a sperm donor sees him and thinks he would be perfect. 9:54amRowena
She is married to a genetically incompatible alien King... the Agamemnon type. When the galactic gossips catch the queen coming out of the enemy ambassador knight's room, the worlds and all the kings assume the worst. 9:54am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What are some people saying about your books? 9:54amRowena
What do people say about my books? 9:55am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Yes - what do your reader's like about your books? 9:55amRowena
Mostly, the reviews are very positive, thank you. I've won quite a few awards. Readers enjoy my sense of humour, and my "intelligent" style. Unless, of course, they don't! I have a lot of puns, sarcasm, satire, irony, quite a bit of social commentary... only most of my characters are aliens, so few humans are offended The love stories are quite good... many readers and reviewers seem to think I do sex quite well, but in the best possible taste, of course. 9:57am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Tell me a little about the awards you spoke of. 9:57amRowena
Ah, yes. I have been compared to Monty Python quite often. Also to Jonathan Swift (Gulliver's Travels), and once to JK Rowling. 9:59amRowena
The Cupid and Psyche Award from The Romance Studio for Insufficient Mating Material, also the Fantasm, two Night Owl Romance, The Hollywood Book Festival (Romance)... there are more. Authors' Choice on AmazonClicks for Knight's Fork, also two Paranormal Romance Reviewers' Picks for consecutive months... My awards are displayed on my website http://www.rowenacherry.com Also, I think on my Facebook page in a photos album... probably called Awards! :-) 10:01am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
It is very exciting. What are your plans for your future writing? Any books coming out?

It would make a very boring list to list them all, though. My books are Forced Mate, Mating Net, Insufficient Mating Material, Knight's Fork. Insufficient Mating Material is in a contest, needing votes just on the title, cover art, blurb at http://tinyurl.com/Award-5-Stars As for what's next... I've had a lot of requests and am working on a spin off series. It's titled "Demetra's Daughters" as a series, but is going to be written from the female point of view. 10:03am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What do you like most about your work and writing? 10:03amRowena
In the god-Princes of Tigron series, there was a foundation laid for finding a lost princess. I love the research... I do a lot of that... and I love the process of writing and also editing. What I like least is writing the sex scenes (even though I am said to be reasonably good at that) and also the promo. Unfortunately, a mid-list author does not get much PR and marketing done for her. I am also helping my husband, who is a car designer, write the story of building a concept car from the ground up. He designed and had built the VSR. 10:06am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
If someone wants more information about your books, where would they go? 10:07amRowena
The best place to go is my website http://www.rowenacherry.com Everything is there including excepts, reviews, an interactive family tree of my characters, links for buying the books anywhere in the world Thank you for asking, ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.! Otherwise, Facebook is a pretty great place. I have a couple of "Pages" as well as my profile. Morning to you ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed., thanks for having me. I am doing quite well. 10:20am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Tell me about your writing. 10:23amCynthia
In a word its my passion...my raison d'etre. I've been writing since I was a young child. These days my focus leans towards thrillers all across the boards. Stories designed to stir the adrenaline and tingle the spine. 10:24am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What is your latest book? 10:26amCynthia
My latest novel is a supernatural thriller entitled DEMON HUNTER. It is the story of a nobody who becomes a somebody in the bloodiest of ways. Costa Calabrese has just uncovered the truth about his past. Some truths should never be revealed. When you learn you’re the son of the worlds foremost and feared hunter of demons, life’s rules inevitably change. Now Costa has been chosen to walk in his famed father's footsteps and take up the role his bloodline demands of him...whether he wants to or not. He is a killer of killers, laying waste to the scourge of evil that threatens the existence of mankind. He is the chosen one. He is the Demon Hunter. 10:28am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What have some of your readers said about it? 10:30amCynthia
My readers unanimously praise my attention to detail and the flow of my prose, especially dialogue. That's the one area I concentrate on to lend authentic voice to the story and the characters. I have a good ear for dialogue. 10:31am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What are you working on now? What will come in the future? 10:33amCynthia
I'm currently at work on the sequel to Demon Hunter. The story is meant to be a three part trilogy...Costa has alot of demon hunting to do! I also have a paranormal thriller set for release in the summer of 2010 called Unfinished Business and my novel The Crescent is in pre-production for a feature film. 10:35am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Wow - A feature film! Tell me about The Crescent and when the film might be out. 10:40amCynthia
The Crescent is a medieval/historical fiction that follows two diverse women as they take up arms to do battle inside the gladiator arena. Nadja, the slave girl who fights to earn her freedom and Liza the discontent queen who fights to earn her respect. I've partnered with JD Ayers at JDA Productions.com and we are currently looking to get financing in place. The goal is to begin shooting in February so we're looking at either a Christmas 2010 release or Summer 2011. This is a period piece type of movie that has not been seen in theaters in a very long time. Action, intrigue, drama, romance, the works! 10:41am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.

well, the first book I had written was a coming of age tale for young adults. I self published it, and it was an experiment in seeing if I could really make writing a career 10:42am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
Could not connect to Facebook Chat at this time. So how did the experiment come out? 10:42am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
So how did the experiment come out? 10:45amAshley
I am branching out now, and have just published the first in a sci-fi political novel about the creation of the first human clone. It is a 7 part series that I have completely written out in 4 years, and most who have read it say it could be the next harry potter. So I am very optimistic! 10:47am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
And you are very busy too. What have some of your readers said about your books? 10:49amAshley
most have said they enjoy the style of writing. It is written out much like how one would imagine an action film moving on the screen. They've been saying that it is thought prevoking and also creepy, being sci-fi. Its a series that branches outside of normal genre catigories and really touches them all slightly 10:50am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.
What kind of a writer do you see yourself five years from now. What do you want your readers to experience from you? 10:53amAshley
I'd like to really pursue the mystery and sci-fi writing since I do enjoy it so much. And I think readers enjoy some intelligent fiction. I would like readers to be educated from their reading my books. Whether its education on religious views, historical, political, or scientific. Real entertainment allows the entertainee to walk away with something more than a bill for a one time show 10:53am ** David K. Ewen, M.Ed.

Today, I spoke at a college in Massachusetts to discuss the importance of promoting the author behind the book. We talked about the 5 W’s and WIIFM as it applies to blogs, newsletters, and press releases. It’s an easy thing to explain, but a complicated thing to practice. I get that and fully understand that it’s not easy. However, it is most important for the book to be successful. It’s the way we authors and publisher report in a journalistic way the value of the author. So what are the 5 W’s you ask?
1. 2. 3. 4.
Who: What: When: Where: 5. Why:
It is:
Identify yourself? What is it that is important? When did it or when will it happen? Where did it or where will it happen? The “why” is WIIFM”
The W.I.I.F.M. is What’s In It For Me.
The answer is in the form of
(It / This) will (give / make) me ______ Examples include:
It will make you cry This will give you success It’s easy for me to explain the “formula” to my students, but it’s hard to practice. An online workshop seminar will be presented to teach and practice this. Look for it in a future edition of TAN Magazine.
