FITNESS PASSION I started working out in my mid-20s to combat anxiety and have never stopped. ACCOMPLISHMENT I am always challenging myself at the gym and am constantly switching things up. I feel my strongest and most powerful at the gym…mentally just as much as physically. MOTIVATIONS Early morning workouts also lessen the chance of me missing a workout. I say, get in there early and get it done! BODY POSITIVITY When I turned 50, I told myself…I will not let my age limit me. Society tells women that after a certain age you are less relevant to the world. I call total bull on that! I am stronger, fitter, and happier than ever. I am 52 and a grandmother. I say to women, do NOT let society or anyone tell you what you can or cannot do. Do not let your age stop you from accomplishing your goals. It’s never too late to be the best version of yourself. NUTRITION I am a pescatarian but get most of my protein from plant-based sources. I fast three days a week for 16 hours. Fasting has significantly reduced bloating and gives my digestive system a chance to rest and reset. I love food, and I don’t deprive myself of the foods I enjoy. I use the 80/20 rule, meaning I eat clean and healthy 80 percent of the time. PASSION When I entered the fire service in 1987, I concentrated on strength to perform the tasks at hand and competed in powerlifting. Since becoming a mother, caregiver, and PE teacher, the journey has taken a different route with workouts being modified due to osteoarthritis but focusing on all aspects of fitness. MOTIVATIONS I have four. My motivations are the fires of life now. After being diagnosed with osteoarthritis along with a hip replacement, the best advice I received was to keep moving. My daughter Shiloh is 12, and I want to be able to keep up with her and spend as much time as possible while teaching her to take care of her body. Third, my mother has Alzheimer’s disease, and while it’s taxing mentally and emotionally, I need to be physically able to manage when assisting her in daily routine tasks. Last, I am a PE teacher for kindergarten through third grade, and I teach the kids about our bodies being temples, and we honor God by taking care of them. I don’t want to be a “do as I say” person. “Do as I do” motivates me with them. WHEN I’ll arise before anyone else and head to the basement where I have a small workout area with a television and access to many workouts to get my workout in. That assists in starting my day.
FITNESS PASSION I have always been an athlete, but when I learned about and joined Beachbody, I was hooked. ACCOMPLISHMENT For three months, I trained and prepped for my first bikini competition. I competed on July 12 in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium. I am really proud of myself for the hard work I put in during the months before and how focused I was on following my meal plan and working out multiple times a day. LIFESTYLE CHANGES My health and fitness journey has been an entire mindset transformation. I really dove in when I was going through my divorce. My workouts and meal plans were the few things I had control of at the time when I felt I had no control over anything. It gave me a focus, a time to work on myself, and see what new life I wanted to create. I learned to love myself, have confidence, and realized I was capable of doing so much more. BEST WORKOUT Lifting/strength training has been a gamechanger for me. I have always been skinny but didn't have much muscle definition. Lifting makes me feel like a badass, especially when I increase my weights and surprise myself with how heavy I am lifting. There are several stereotypes around women and lifting, but it is my newfound passion because of the amazing results I have seen from it.

MOTIVATION One of my greatest motivations for being physically active has been my grandparents. Their minds were perfect, but their bodies made life difficult. Knowing I have the potential for that kind of longevity motivates me to do everything I can to have the best quality of life possible. BENEFIT I think the greatest benefit of exercise is how it improves my mood and reduces stress. BODY POSITIVITY No body is perfect. We need to replace negative thoughts with positive ones, and surround ourselves with people in our lives who will build us up and remind us how special we are. Make a list of all the things your body does for you — dancing, running, smelling, singing, breathing — and in return take care of it so it can keep doing those things. BEST WORKOUT Training is my main workout, but I also enjoy yoga, boxing, and running. I think the most beneficial type of workout you can do is HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). It combines strength and cardio and creates lean muscle mass, burns calories even after the workout is over, and burns more fat in less time. NUTRITION I try not to eat after 7pm; no reason to fuel my body when I need it to wind down and rest. I do not keep junk food in my house and definitely nothing that has sugar as one of the first three or four ingredients.
ACCOMPLISHMENT My most recent accomplishment was stepping on stage for the first time as a World Beauty Fitness & Fashion competitor. It was like Victoria Secret models with muscle. I didn't know what to expect so I just worked out regularly and kept my diet consistent. MENTAL As long as I'm able to move, I can exercise. I have control over it. It has made me mentally and physically tougher. BODY POSITIVITY I wish women would love themselves and work on their mindset before working on their bodies. Having a nice body doesn't get you what you want in life. Mindset, inner peace and happiness, confidence, passion, drive — that's what gets you where you want to be. How we look in these bodies does not ensure happiness — it's how we live in them. BEST WORKOUT Personally, my body responds best to high intensity workouts. I have to keep my heart rate up with limited rest. I love supersets, circuits, and sprint intervals. Plyometrics are my go-to for sculpting my legs for sure. ACCOMPLISHMENTS My first Ironman was Ironman Louisville in 2015. I completed three full Ironman, at least 12 Ironman 70.3, and have Ironman Traverse City 70.3 and Ironman Louisville on the schedule for this year. I use a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Never Quitâ&#x20AC;? mentality to get through races when they get tough. The Chattanooga Trail Run (where I finished as fifth place female), was a 50-mile race where I really had to dig deep. It was raining, cold, and miserable. The storm rolled in with high winds and was knocking trees down. I had several opportunities to drop at aid stations, but quitting was not an option. ROLE MODEL I have 9-year-old twins, Eli and Emma, who are very active. Eli plays soccer for an elite club, and Emma cheers at a very high level. They both run cross country and excel at it. LATEST FEAT I went to Iceland in July to crew and pace a friend in Island Extreme Triathlon. The course was grueling and has over 4,300 feet of elevation gain in the 27-mile run. I carried the nutrition for both of us and helped keep him motivated during the run. It is mandatory to have a pacer the entire run portion of the race. BEST WORKOUT Swimming is a great total body workout and very relaxing for me. Running gives me hours of time to reflect on all aspects of life. KAREN MCKNIGHT, 56 Vehicle Assembly Technician & Joint Inspector at Kentucky Truck Plant of Ford Motor Company; Yoga Instructor FITNESS PASSION My fitness began 22 years ago with the realization that I was responsible for my personal health after a muscular injury at work. Any job carries an inherent injury risk. The company provided great medical and physical therapy care for my ‘work health’. I was responsible for the health of my life. ACCOMPLISHMENT Experiencing my first lesson in the art of Double Dutch jumping in July was more notable to some, but my most recent fitness accomplishment was my first place win as a figure competitor in the 2015 Kentucky Derby Festival National Physique Competition in the master’s 50+ Class A division. I prepared for this childhood dream by hiring competition physical trainer Larry Jackson of 3D Fitness. BODY POSITIVITY Let’s not physically compare, but be inspired to live healthy. Meditation is an absolutely fantastic method to access the mindset needed to release the repetitive bombardment of how a body is ‘supposed’ to look. BEST WORKOUT I join others in the gym at work or Planet Fitness, I teach yoga twice a week, and I attend a Kriya yoga class at the Hindu Temple of Kentucky, but mostly I work out on my own. My fitness foundation is basic Hatha Yoga. It specifically massages the internal organs to affect their proper function, it is a weight-lifting system simply using the body’s own weight, and it soothes the mind. CORTNEY PROVIDES THE COMFORT OF HOME THROUGH FOOD AT NAZARETH HOME BY BARBARA MYERSON KATZ // PHOTO BY ERICKA DOLL
W
e eat to stay healthy, but also for pure pleasure and the joyful memories summoned by familiar flavors. Nazareth Home’s Food Service Director, Cortney Langdon, considers all aspects of residents’ dining needs and desires when planning menus, managing kitchen staff, and purchasing ingredients and supplies for the Clifton neighborhood senior living facility. She loves interacting with residents and their families who see her in the dining room and at resident council meetings, where Cortney encourages them to tell her what they like to eat and share favorite recipes. If she can’t get a desired item or ingredient through Nazareth Home’s regular supplier, Cortney says, she’s happy to head to the supermarket. Cortney has worked in food service since her first job as a teenager, continuing through college at Western Kentucky University, where she worked for the restaurant and catering group and graduated as a registered dietitian. At home, she’s a vegetarian who eats fish and cooks five or six days a week — much healthier, she says, than the fast food and restaurant meals she grew up eating. Her current favorite dish to prepare is roasted vegetables like Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, chickpeas, sweet potatoes, and beets. At Nazareth Home, the kitchen whips up healthy menu items including baked fish and lean meats such as grilled chicken and pork, along with a variety of salads, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grain breads. Traditional favorites are also featured, including fried chicken made from scratch every other Sunday — always a sure-fire winner, Cortney says. It can be challenging to meet a variety of special dietary needs while also catering to the tastes of a diverse clientele, but Cortney and her staff make it possible for residents to have some choice in what they eat every day — a key to quality of life, she believes. If someone with diabetes wants cake, Cortney says, “I say we go for it,” and she finds a way to maintain both free choice and good health. “I let families know we’re here to listen and educate,” she says, “to help residents make the best choices.” “I love to find the way to the residents’ hearts through food,” Cortney says. “I get to see the joy in their faces when it reminds them of home.”

current resident who played golf to the age of 98 and still comes to exercise now that he’s 103.
efore Mark Clifford became The Forum at Brookside’s Lifestyle 360 Director almost 14 years ago, he worked as a youth pastor — great preparation, he says, for overseeing activities that meet the physical, social, and spiritual needs of some 240 residents of the senior living facility. “My philosophy is to provide activities for residents that get them engaged with the community and one another,” Mark explains, “to help them enjoy life and be well.” At The Forum, which includes both independent living and skilled care facilities, residents get to socialize, exercise, worship, and extend their educational and artistic horizons. Holidays and personal celebrations both big and small are marked with parties. (Mark says the annual Labor Day picnic draws 400 to 600 people, including family and friends of residents.) Tai chi, exercise classes, and an indoor swimming pool provide opportunities to stay healthy, while card games, dominoes, bocce ball, and Wii bowling appeal to folks looking for friendly competition. There are creative writing classes, monthly poetry teas, and lectures every week on history, literature, and travel. Residents can enjoy group outings to local restaurants and several
Activities director Karen Rucker, who works with Mark, recalls spending much of her childhood around her grandmother, whose friends became her friends. She loves helping senior citizens gain a sense of joy and purpose — often with a creative flourish. “I’m a crafter,” Karen says. “I like being able to come up with projects that each person can make individually and have a sense of accomplishment at the end.” She guides residents through watercolor painting, working with clay, cooking clubs, and in a handbell choir called The Sublime Chimes. overnight trips throughout the year. In addition, Mark notes, many residents are still active in their own outside community organizations and churches. “My favorite thing about what I do is my interaction with the residents,” Mark says. “I love building relationships with them, getting to know them, and allowing them to get to know me,” including one
Karen and other staff also visit regularly with residents unable to venture far from their living quarters. “We’re going to come see you, talk to you, find out what you’ve done in your life,” she says, taking care to meet the needs of families as well. “We’re blessed in life to be a blessing to someone else,” Karen says.

BARBARA F. CULLEN, 63 Choreographer/Dance Instructor, Performer at Dancers Center for Training FITNESS PASSION I have been dancing since the age of 7, but became serious about my fitness passion 35 years ago when I was in my 30s. NOT A SETBACK I developed arthritis in my left hip seven years ago and tried stem cell therapy, but my arthritis was far too gone for that to help. I could barely walk after teaching classes all day. I would choreograph while hanging on to the back of a chair (I did this while choreographing for Kentucky Opera and Kentucky Shakespeare). Surgeon Dr. Jonathan Yerasimides suggested to get both hips replaced at the same time because I was in good shape. The two-hour planned surgery only took one hour to replace both hips, and I was up and walking in the recovery room. Thanks to great physical therapy, I was teaching dance five weeks after surgery MENTAL I feel joy when I dance, especially tap. It works the mind and the body. ADVICE The day you stop learning is the day you start to get old. NUTRITION I am a pescatarian. PASSION I played basketball at the University of Southern Maine and graduated with a degree in Exercise Science & Sports Medicine. REALIZATION After graduation I worked at Duke University with the
men’s and women’s basketball and football teams and then moved on to work for Adidas. During this time I was struggling with my weight, eating, and motivation to get to the gym. I was so fed up with feeling alone on my journey, with diets, obsession with the scale, and how terrible I felt about my body. I realized that if I was equipped with all this knowledge, training, and expertise and was still struggling, how many other women felt just like me? ACCOMPLISHMENT I would have to say accepting myself for where I am and realizing that my physical looks do not dictate my worth. It’s taken me my whole life to get here. I’ve found a great ebb and flow of healthy eating habits, fun workouts for 45 minutes, positive mindset, a strong faith, and rest. SETBACK My workouts have significantly changed in the last six months. In
December, I ruptured my patella tendon and tore up my IT band. I still can’t do 75 percent of what I used to do. But instead of focusing on what I can’t do, I choose to celebrate the mini victories. BODY POSITIVITY I want women to know that their worth is not dependent on to the number they see on the scale. When I was obsessed with the scale, I hated myself and the scale literally dictated my day, confidence, happiness, and choices I made. ROLE MODEL Our kids are learning from us how to be busy, stressed, and overwhelmed. Teaching them that moving our bodies, eating clean, and taking care of our mental health is critical for their long-term health and happiness. I joined Beachbody as a coach and found my passion in helping others through fitness, which led me to get certifications in nutrition and personal training. INSPIRATION I want to be healthy for my husband and daughter. When I see her mimic my habits and see her jump on my Peloton spin bike or lift my dumbbells when I’m not looking, I know I am providing tools she will need as she grows up. MENTAL My workout is a huge stress reliever
for me. It really clears my head and usually gives me new creative ideas for my business. I always notice a big spike in my energy levels when I’m consistently active. BODY POSITIVITY I think as a woman this is something we have all struggled with at some point in our live. One thing I try to drill into my clients is to stay off the scale. Instead I try to have them focus on “non-scale” victories: How do your clothes fit?, How is your energy?, How many squats or push ups can you do now versus two weeks ago? These are real life and measurable victories you can’t get from a scale. NUTRITION I eat most of meals that I prep at my store, Prep Meals 502. My meals are Macro Balanced using healthy proteins,

I think when people talk about fitness they only look on the outer appearance when to me fitness is of the entire self. After cheerleading in college I started taking circus arts more seriously, and I’ve recently fallen in love with rock climbing. ACCOMPLISHMENT I train for months on skills and routines that I perform. MOTIVATION Training for shows and gigs with CirqueLouis also keeps me motivated to stay in shape and keep up with and learn new skills. Also, having very active parents has helped. They have been avid volleyball players. They have shown me by example that no matter what stage of life you’re in, health can be a priority, as well as the importance of having something that you’re passionate about. LIFESTYLE CHANGE Exercise boosts my overall energy and mood and encourages me to take care of myself in other ways, like diet and mindfulness. ROLE MODEL I like to bring my kids, Louisa (age 3) and Konrad (age 5), along to my workouts as much as possible. They like to play at the circus gym and they love to go rock climbing with my husband and me. It’s nice to be able to spend time with them while I’m training so they can see that workout time can also be family time. We also love to take family walks and hikes together. As an adult I have maintained a vigorous exercise regimen of lifting weights, running, and swimming and ran my first of many full marathons in 2010. BODY POSITIVITY I really wish women would stop filtering pictures of themselves in an attempt to look perfect on social media and instead present themselves as the people that their loved ones see on a daily basis. BEST WORKOUT I generally work out alone. I like to have the time to be in my own head and push myself to the point of exhaustion without worrying about what another person is doing. NUTRITION I eat a spoonful of organic virgin coconut oil three times a day along with a shot of apple cider vinegar three times daily. I find myself getting stronger for my long runs and during weight-lifting sessions. ACCOMPLISHMENT I have moderate knee osteoarthritis, sciatica, and the hormonal ups and downs of perimenopause. All of this was a perfect storm this summer, and I became devoted to pivoting and planning a different way to heal and
keep myself healthy and fit. I made more time to rest, changed the classes I took, sought care and treatment from doctors and other professionals, and saw myself through the loneliness and frustration I sometimes experienced. I never gave up. MOTIVATION I am deeply motivated to exercise because it’s part of my treatment plan to manage my own diagnosis of depression and anxiety. My mind, my body, and my medicine work in concert to keep me well. NUTRITION I rely on an 80/20 principle — I eat “fuel foods” 80 percent of the time and “joy eats” 20 percent of the time. LIFESTYLE CHANGE Exercise is very important and is the key to unlocking so much more. I needed to develop disciplined success routines in the morning and at night to help me stay focused on what’s most important in my life — my relationship with Christ, my husband, and my children. A good teacher showed me that when you are pursuing something urgently you must be focused, be strategic, and be relentless. BODY POSITIVITY You have to love yourself first internally, and then it will show up on the outside no matter what size or shape you are. I found that for my husband at least, it’s not my size or what I’m wearing that fires him up — it’s my confidence and passion that make the fireworks. BEST WORKOUT I recommend buying a step tracker and walking to get started if it has been a while. All cardio — including exercise classes and videos or cardio equipment — is great. I believe resistance training makes a huge impact on your tone and curves. Also, running and jogging is great to help increase stamina. PASSION When I turned 18 — the first thing I did was join a gym. SETTING GOALS In 2015, I turned 40. I set out that year to train for and run the Indianapolis Marathon and shave 40 minutes off my prior marathon time. I not only accomplished that goal, but I also ran over 1,000 miles while training. After reaching a huge 1,000 mile milestone (that was the first time I ever ran that many miles in one single year during my entire adult life), I thought - “I wonder if I could run a 100 miles a month?” So, in 2016, I made that my goal....to run 100 miles a month. Goal accomplished. I decided in 2019 I would do the “Run the
Year” Challenge. The challenge basically means running 2019 miles for the year (that equates to an average of 168.25 miles/month, 38.83 miles/week or 5.53 miles/ day.) It is legit the hardest, most difficult goal I have ever tackled. I recently registered for the New York City Virtual Marathon 2019 for a guaranteed spot in the New York City Marathon 2020. Only 500 entries were accepted and I was one of them. MOTIVATION On days I don’t feel like running, I give myself a pep talk. I remind myself of how great I’ll feel when it’s over. I tell myself it’s okay to slow your pace....just move. Some days, it’s literally more of a mental battle than a physical one.
The mind is a very powerful tool and requires training as well. BODY POSITIVITY In a world full of things you cannot control, your body and physical well being is something you can. Being healthy gives you a sense of strength, builds confidence — allows you to hold your head high and stand up for yourself. I tell my children — you are given this one body for your entire life, and you must take care of it. No one else can do it for you. I was born with spina bifida so I always understood I was going to have to do something to stay in the game without debilitating pain every day. So I stumbled on Bikram yoga about 15 years ago. Its creator had been in a major motorcycle accident that broke most of his body and he rehabbed himself through what he created as Bikram yoga. ACCOMPLISHMENT I never thought of myself as a competitor because I have a very weak left leg, but about two years ago I realized that you only have to work on one leg in the yoga USA competition. That meant for the

first time in my life I could be a competitor. So in January I found a certified coach named Glenn Brown and we started practicing. In April I competed in Arlington, Virginia, and ranked 20th in the regionals for USA Yoga. I was elated and plan to practice and compete next year also. MOTIVATION My motivation is not to be in pain every day as I work my job. LIFESTYLE CHANGE Yoga for me has changed my life beyond and back. It keeps me healthy, it keeps me out of pain, it keeps my mind more focused, and I always feel happier after a 90-minute Bikram practice. BODY POSITIVITY When I find a problem with my body I try to just work for a solution. Sounds silly but it takes my mind off the problem and puts it on the resolution. Jennifer McCall Kuhl says she has a whole tribe of friends at the gym who inspire and motivate her every day. “These people bring such happiness to my life!” Jennifer says she works out with her husband Troy quite often.

Barbara F. Cullen had a double hip replacement — can you tell? She also teaches about 20 dance classes a week and has students ranging from eight to 76.

“My sister was my motivation to start running and has been my running buddy ever since,” says Bethany Brown. “She always holds me accountable and pushes me to be more competitive during training runs.”
Melissa Goodlett says, “It’s so fun sweating it out in a group setting and encouraging each other to keep going. I also have a good friend who has been my 5K running partner since college. We still run them when we can and continue to cheer each other across the finish line and cheer each other on in life!”
5 “I am so much more motivated to work hard when I’m surrounded by others,” Jen Mannarelli says. “I have a tendency to slack off or just get bored when I work out alone.”
Alyssa Schlimm also goes rock climbing with her husband and kids (ages 3 and 5) every week. “Staying active as a family brings us even closer and allows us to cheer each other on and connect over a common interest,” she says. Alyssa says that the “aerial beasts” are the strongest, most encouraging women she knows. “We share skills, teach each other, and support each other.” “Part of my morning routine is waking up and working out with my husband,” says Joy Mays. “I get invited to the gym by friends and family and I make sure to be there to support their journey.”

Ashley DeVault’s favorite recipe right now is FOND FIG PIZZAS by Chef Madeleine Dee (who is regularly featured in Today’s Woman). INGREDIENTS: Garlic Naan, Basil Pesto, Salt, Blue Cheese, Fresh Mozzarella, Dried Spanish Figs, Shaved Parmesan Cheese, Prosciutto • Spread pesto thickly on naan, leaving a crust. • Sprinkle lightly with salt, then a light sprinkle of blue cheese. • Add about 15 small pieces of mozzarella (the fresher, the better). • Slice figs thinly and add at least one small sliver per piece of mozzarella. • Top with a small handful of shaved Parmesan.

HAVE YOU BEEN HERE? Our photo shoots took place at Louisville Water Tower Park and The Falls of Ohio State Park, as beautiful backdrops. The 1860 buildings, located at the Water Tower Park, were part of the original water works and are national historic landmarks. You can take a tour through their WaterWorks Museum or attend one of many special events held at the Louisville Water Tower Park. The Falls of the Ohio State Park has a Devonian-age fossil bed and is part of a 1,404-acre National Wildlife Conservation Area. Its 3,000-square-foot Interpretive Center includes exhibits, educational films, and other learning opportunities for visitors.

DO I NEED A COACH? “Five years ago, I challenged myself to take one of (Jeff Howard’s) interval training classes after warily watching him teach through a classroom window for several weeks,” says Laura Wagner. “He’s a master instructor and motivator and showed me that my body could do things I couldn’t have imagined, even as a much younger woman,” she says. “I never thought I’d have the muscle definition I see now or have the fitness level I’ve achieved.

Whitney Newby’s most recent tattoo is the word relentless. “I added it to my phoenix tattoo as a reminder that I have overcome so many obstacles and will continue to rise above because I am relentless.”
Alyssa Schlimm has a tattoo of a rosary on her wrist. “My Catholic faith has always been a huge part of my life. My faith brings me such peace, strength, and joy, so I knew for my first tattoo I wanted it to be representative of the tradition and beauty of the church.”
