MOST ADMIRED WOMAN 2018
T
The word “admirable” comes from the Latin word admirabilis, which means “to be wondered at,” and wondering is certainly something we do with this year’s 12 Most Admired Woman winners. We wonder:
“HOW DO THEY DO IT?” “WHAT KEEPS THEM SO FOCUSED?” “WHERE DOES THEIR ENERGY COME FROM FOR THEIR BUSY SCHEDULES?” “HOW DID THEY DEVELOP THE SKILLS THAT THEY BRING TO THEIR ORGANIZATIONS AND INDUSTRIES?” Although the following interviews offer a peek into these women’s personalities and lives, their responses only give us a glimpse into who they are and why they do what they do. Perhaps what their stories do best is remind us about what makes each of us admirable. What valuable lessons can we take from these admired women and their varied experiences? What do you bring to the world that makes others admire and wonder about you? Read on to meet this year’s Most Admired Woman winners.

K
im Baker has felt called to the world of performing arts since she was a teenage flute player participating in the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts in instrumental music. When she is not working to bring great arts experiences to Louisville, she takes time to travel and find unconventional spots to take in the theatre, such as The Shed in New York City. Music is a part of her life at all times, including when she is walking her dog. PAGE 8>>
<<PAGE 6
“. . . A GOOD MASSAGE IS A PRETTY FANTASTIC WAY TO BLOW OFF STEAM.”
WHAT DOES A PERFECT MORNING LOOK LIKE TO YOU? Everyone sleeps late but me. I get up between 5:30 or 6, but nobody else is awake. Not even the dog. I make both of my cups of coffee, and I drink them without anybody waking up. I just get a chance to breathe, read, and enjoy the morning.
IF YOU COULD GO SEE ANY PERFORMANCE OR PERFORMER (DEAD OR ALIVE), WHAT OR WHOM WOULD YOU SEE? I’m dying to see Dear Evan Hansen. I’d see a Grateful Dead or Rolling Stones show. I’ve always wanted to see Depeche Mode, and I’m so sad I never got to see Johnny Cash. WHAT KIND OF PERFORMANCE DO YOU MOST ENJOY? I do love orchestra, but I also really enjoy contemporary dance. I enjoy theater because I usually learn something from the experience that I didn’t know before.
2004
2003
WHAT IS CHALLENGING ABOUT YOUR POSITION? The arts community in Louisville is really wonderful. People are innovative and creative, and they want to do new and unusual things. There’s such a need for all ages to have access and experience. There’s just not enough time to do everything that I think this community could do. We’ve got the talent and the ability here, but the need for service is pretty great.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE DESSERT OR TREAT? Ice cream and caramel corn.
MOST ADMIRED WOMAN 2018 KIM BAKER
2008
DO YOU EVER EXPERIENCE FAILURE? When I was much younger, I applied for a job (as the Broadway planner) at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, Ohio. Though I was a finalist, I didn’t get the job. I was really disappointed at the time, but it all worked out.
ARTS
DO YOU HAVE FAVORITE MUSICAL GENRES? Triple A, classical, New Wave, and musicals.
2005
DO YOU HAVE A ROLE MODEL? My grandmother and my mother. My grandmother was a farmer. Through her, I learned the importance of a work ethic, the joys of routine, and the commitment to family. She was a very strong female. My mother exposed me to the arts to give me experiences she didn’t have growing up. She encouraged me to try new things.
HOW DO YOU RELIEVE STRESS? I love to listen to music and just get outside. I will say a good massage is a pretty fantastic way to blow off steam, but that takes some planning. I also hug my children.
2007
ARE YOU A RISK-TAKER? I’m a strategic thinker. I’ll take risks, but I want to think through every single potential outcome and really assess situations.
WHERE IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU VISIT IF YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY? The Sydney Opera House.
2006
WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU ADMIRE IN OTHER PEOPLE? I very much admire people who speak their minds and aren’t fearful of expressing their opinions. I admire people who can approach things with a sense of playfulness and fun. I admire people with divergent thoughts and ideas.

DO YOU HAVE FAVORITE BRUNCH SPOTS IN LOUISVILLE? Wild Eggs downtown and Gralehaus on Baxter Avenue.
“SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE BAD DAYS. . . AND IT’S CHALLENGING TO MOVE PAST THE BAD DAYS.”

2004
ATHLETICS/ FITNESS HALL OF FAME
2003
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING THING ABOUT SWIMMING? Mentally to go, day-in and day-out, working really hard. Sometimes you just have bad days, bad meets, and it’s challenging to move past the bad days. The mental game is really hard.
IF YOU HAD SIX MONTHS TO DO WHATEVER YOU WANTED, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? I would go to Europe and travel. I was in Europe in the summer of 2017 for world championships in Croatia and Hungary. Since I was swimming, I didn’t get to do much sightseeing.
MOST ADMIRED WOMAN 2018 MALLORY COMERFORD
2008
HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED A MOTIVATING DISAPPOINTMENT? The Olympic trials happen every four years to qualify for the Olympics. In 2016, I had been working really hard. I knew to make the team was a long shot, but I was kind of disappointed with how I swam. That really was a shift in my career. It made me realize ‘I really want this.’ I can do this, [but] I need to learn from what I’m doing rather than just accept that I didn’t do as well as I wanted to.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? I definitely want to stay in the sports world, either in swimming or sports marketing. My big goal is to qualify for the Olympics in 2020. Based on that, I’ll either want to keep swimming until 2024 or move to my professional career.
2005
WHEN DID SWIMMING BECOME A SERIOUS INTEREST FOR YOU? I started swimming at age seven. I’ve always been really competitive. Around age nine is when I started USA Swimming. I got serious when I was 11 or 12.
WHAT IS A PERFECT MORNING FOR YOU? Sleeping in, going to brunch, and then getting back in bed.
2007
WHAT TRAITS DO YOU THINK SWIMMING HAS HELPED YOU DEVELOP? Finding positives in failure and being able to bounce back. Everything hasn’t gone perfectly, and you have to always be able to find something positive out of your workout or the day. Also, time management and being able to balance my time.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU SWIM? We have two practices every day, for about two hours, except for Wednesdays and Saturdays when we have one practice. We lift weights on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
2006
WHAT TRAITS DO YOU ADMIRE IN OTHER PEOPLE? Hard work and honesty.

WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU ADMIRE IN OTHERS? What I admire are all the superpowers that all my superhero friends have. We’ve got superheroes that are bold. One’s superpower is being a motivator. One is a builder. One is uninhibited, one is compassionate, a protector, determined. I love all of those traits. I also love a good sense of humor. WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU ADMIRE IN YOURSELF? My superpower is joy. I feel like I’m a passionate person as well. WERE YOU INTERESTED IN STYLE AS A CHILD? I’m like Lady Gaga: ‘Baby, I was born this way.’ I was born the same year as Barbie. I have dressed a female form from early on.
DO YOU LIKE TO TRAVEL? I traveled every month last year. I do a lot of trunk shows out of town. I did a couple of trips to Los Angeles for cabi. I went to the James Beard house in New York. I went to Boston, Texas, and a retreat in South Carolina. [She also went on a yoga retreat in Costa Rica.] WHAT IS A PERFECT MORNING FOR YOU? I get up early, make a cup of coffee, go to my sacred space, and have my ‘hour of power.’ I start with 10 minutes of prayer time, 10 minutes of journaling, 10 minutes of visualization, 10 minutes of reading, 10 minutes of meditation, and 10 minutes of stretching. And then I go to hot yoga class. I come home, make my favorite smoothie, and shower. If it’s a perfect morning, my hair turns out great.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE STRESS? If it’s really stressful, I’ll just cry. Crying is a huge stress release for me. I get it out, and I’m all better. I have to plan it, though, because I don’t have a lot of time to cry. I can plan to watch a sad movie.
DO YOU HAVE A PET PEEVE? I’m very offended when I’m talking to people and they keep glancing down at their phones.
2006
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES OF YOUR JOB? Explaining to a woman that she is worth full price. Helping a woman understand that getting dressed makes your day, that her body is not a number on a hang-tag, and to accept a compliment.
2015
DO YOU HAVE A GUILTY PLEASURE? People magazine.
ARE YOU A SWEET OR SALTY PERSON? Sweet. I don’t have it often, but when I do I think I’ve died and gone to heaven: white cake, white icing. Good old-fashioned wedding cake.

ynthia Collier never dreamed she would be in the trucking industry. After having success as a district sales manager for Casual Corner, she agreed to help her father develop a trucking company. It was often a struggle, trying to balance raising her daughters with getting the business off the ground, and she sometimes gave private music lessons to supplement the family income. She still runs concerns by her father, who she considers her mentor, and serves as a mentor to her own daughter, Rebecca, who has been working at the company. PAGE 20>>

WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU ADMIRE IN OTHER PEOPLE? I love to be around people who are outgoing and who exude a personality that is engaging and makes you want to be in their aura. I like to be around result-oriented, can-do people.
IF YOU HAD SIX MONTHS WITH NO OBLIGATIONS OR FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Without a doubt, I would give my time to David. He is my soulmate and the love of my life, and he’s just taken such a back seat to my career.
WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU ADMIRE IN YOURSELF? I am definitely a can-do person. I’m a motivator. I love getting the best out of people.
WHAT IS A FEAR YOU’VE HAD TO OVERCOME? I hate to travel. I get so stressed packing. When I’m going somewhere, I feel like there is a metal rod in my shoulders because I’m so tense.

WHAT ARE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY? We send drivers out from our campus, they come home, and go out the next day. It’s a lot more family-friendly [than people realize]. In trucking, there are great salaries to be made. I have several drivers who make over $100,000 a year. Our median is $70-80,000.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME PROFESSIONAL FAILURES? We went after a couple of properties, and they fell through. I think that was a blessing. We landed at River Ridge, and the people who run it are excellent.
2015
WHAT ARE YOUR COMPANY MOTTOS? The Golden Rule and “On Time, Every Time.” I have to set the standard.
WHAT HAS IT BEEN LIKE BEING A WOMAN IN A HISTORICALLY MALEDOMINATED PROFESSION? When we started the company, you didn’t hear about women. My followthrough was breathtaking for them. Now we have many women drivers, and the last five dispatchers I hired were women. The sales team happens to be all-female. I love the follow-through that women tend to give, and the attention to detail.
2005
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU’VE DONE THAT MIGHT SURPRISE PEOPLE? I made a decision to sing with the Kentucky Opera. I was in a really small chorus of 12 people. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. Trying to memorize an entire opera in Italian is quite a feat, especially when you’re still changing diapers at home.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE DESSERT OR TREAT? Chocolate. The richer the chocolate, the more I like it.

WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU ADMIRE IN OTHER PEOPLE? Authenticity, humility, kindness, hardworking. People who are selfless. QUALITIES YOU ADMIRE IN YOURSELF? I think I have a pretty big heart and try to help other people. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO UNPLUG AND HAVE TIME AWAY FROM YOUR ORGANIZATION? Because it’s so personal and sad a lot of times, I need to be just Lara MacGregor, not Lara MacGregor with metastatic breast cancer who’s the founder of Hope Scarves and needs to be encouraging people, hopeful, filled with gratitude, and living this intentional life. That is me, and I’m so thankful, but I also need to recharge my batteries.
WHAT ARE YOUR FEARS ABOUT RUNNING YOUR ORGANIZATION? My biggest fear is when I’m not able to do it, that I become too sick to be a part of the day-to-day. That gives me a unique perspective. Even on the stressful days, the over-stretched days, I still can sit back and be like, ‘I am just so glad to be here!’ WHAT IS A REALLY GREAT MORNING FOR YOU? My children wake up and they don’t argue. We get out the door without a hitch and get to school on time. I go to yoga, pick up my hot green tea at Heine Bros, and I head into Hope Scarves’ office.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING THING ABOUT OPERATING HOPE SCARVES? One of the things I’m constantly balancing is our capacity with our promotion. If we were just promoting our organization, all our scarves would go out the door.
A FAVORITE DESSERT/TREAT? Salted caramel ice cream.
2015
WHAT IS A GUILTY PLEASURE FOR YOU? I’m definitely an environmentalist, but I love a long, hot shower or a bath.
WHAT DOES WRITING YOUR BLOG DO FOR YOU? It’s my therapy and my outlet. I don’t publish half of what I write. It’s my way to let go of feelings, to process experiences, and remember things. An always amazing piece is what my blog means to others.
2005
HOW HAVE YOU HANDLED FAILURE IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE? I’ve written grants that were denied. I’ve had projects that I’ve put a lot of time into that flat out flopped. I’ve been trying to get Hope Scarves to a national level, and I haven’t had any success. I’ve had failure after failure. It makes me analyze my decision-making process and then makes me even more dedicated to the goal. If you are open to it, it all leads to learning.

“I HAVE A LOT OF ENERGY. I’VE NEVER BEEN A SIT-AROUNDTHE-HOUSE KIND OF PERSON.”
HOW DO YOU MEET THE CHALLENGES OF WORK AND FAMILY LIFE? I have a lot of energy. I’ve never been a sit-around-the-house kind of person. My mom will tell you I was the most annoying preschooler because I was constantly bored, constantly wanting to be around other people and needing entertainment.
2004
CORPORATE
2003
WHAT WERE YOUR PROFESSIONAL FEARS? Balancing work/life. I’m very aware of my limits, and I’ve always been someone who operates within those limits because I know I’ll combust if I go past that. Not knowing what I was going to be able to handle was a pretty big fear.
WHAT WOULD BE A PERFECT NON-WORK DAY? Sleeping late, having coffee outside on the porch, exercising, and it being a beautiful, sunny day. Spending the afternoon in a tropical place or sitting by our pool in the summer.
MOST ADMIRED WOMAN 2018 KATE LATTS
2008
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT MANAGING PEOPLE IN YOUR CAREER? There are different ways to get to an end solution, and they may not be the ways I chose, but they can all be viable. Putting people in a box to do it a certain way means sometimes you’re not going to get the best result.
ARE YOU A PLANNER OR A FLY-BY-THE-SEAT-OFYOUR-PANTS PERSON? While I strive to understand other people, fly-by-the-seat-of-theirpants people make me have anxiety. We plan a vacation while we’re on the vacation prior.
2005
WHAT IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION YOU’VE HAD TO MAKE? I did not get into Harvard Business School; I was deferred for a year. I went ahead and made the decision to go back to Duke, where I’d gone for undergrad. I met my husband there. So it enabled me to meet my husband and start the life I now have. This was really a pivotal decision in setting the trajectory for the rest of my life.
WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT YOUR LIFE? I really like having teenage kids. I know that sounds crazy, but I like having big kids. It’s really exciting to see them engaged in our family business and turning into resilient, happy young people. I enjoy this part of parenting more than when they were younger, although I adore babies.
2007
QUALITIES YOU ADMIRE IN YOURSELF? I’m a really transparent person and don’t pretend to be someone that I’m not. I think that’s really important for all people and, in particular, women. Really be true to who you are and what your passions are.
IF YOU HAD SIX MONTHS WITH NO OBLIGATIONS OR FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? I’d have to bring my husband along, and we would travel the world, but only to warm, sunny places. I’ve never been to Asia and South America.

haron Kerrick started her business career working with IBM systems and eventually co-owned Micro Computer Solutions. When she began teaching business classes at the University of Louisville, she was often confused and frustrated by the dichotomy between the business and education worlds. She earned her Ph.D. so that she could speak and be taken seriously as both a business leader and academician. When she isn’t balancing the needs of Bellarmine students with her administrative duties as dean of the business school, you can find her spending time with her beloved granddaughter. “I LOVE TO SAW AND CUT WOOD . . . IT’S JUST FUN TO GO OUT AND PLAY IN THE CREEK AND CUT DOWN TREES.”
WHAT BUSINESS SKILL DO YOU HAVE THAT MIGHT SURPRISE PEOPLE? I have an associate’s degree to be a paralegal but never worked as a paralegal. It actually helped us in our business because I learned how to read documents and ask intelligent questions of our attorneys in the company. ARE YOU A PLANNER OR DO YOU PREFER TO WING IT? I’m a free-wheeling planner. I can do things very spontaneously, but I’m also very goaloriented. I use my calendar extensively to do work and make lists. I think it’s a necessary trait for high achievers.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT RISKS? I do believe you can calibrate people’s risk-taking and that we create our own constraints. I’ve been practicing this in my classroom.
WHAT SURPRISES YOU ABOUT WORKING IN HIGHER EDUCATION? I’m surprised that business and education have such different operating styles and work cultures. Business has to move at the speed of light because that’s what feeds you; education is a little slow. You would think it would need to be more cutting edge. There’s a competitive nature that’s very different. WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? I’m classic with a modern twist. I always wear tailored suits. If I can have shoes that match my dress, I’m so happy. ARE YOU A SWEET OR SALTY PERSON? I have a huge sweet tooth. I eat candy all the time. I have a little candy drawer next to my bed.

2008
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLACE YOU’VE TRAVELED? Thailand and Russia. I like to go to places that are not touristy. When I say Russia, I’m talking about the border of Siberia, places where hardly any English is spoken. It’s so fun to figure it all out.
2007
WHAT IS AN UNUSUAL INTEREST YOU HAVE? I love to saw and cut wood. I live in a wooded area, and it’s just fun to go out and play in the creek and cut down trees.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON PROFESSIONAL FAILURE? In my business entrepreneurship class, I actually want them to fail fast. I’ve had lots of failures, but if you can plan, you can remedy them. I’ve made failures in team-building. If I don’t have the right people in the right place at the right time, then potentially they can’t move forward.
2006
WHAT WAS IT THAT ATTRACTED YOU TO BUSINESS? I’m really motivated by efficiencies. That’s why I latched onto working with computers because it was faster and easier to do things. Technology gave me a career, and it’s my passion.
DO YOU HAVE PROFESSIONAL FEARS? As we are inundated with so much data, I worry whether I’ll have the complex knowledge to learn so many things so quickly all the time. That’s going to be a challenge for leaders of the future to discern between indepth comprehension and glazing over things.

e often assume that people who move to their own beat hit the cymbals and snares frantically, in a rush of movement and loudness. But Rhona Kamar’s beat is slow and gentle, a trait she takes from her grandmother Ruby, who taught her to cook and instilled in her a love of hospitality. That slowness certainly hasn’t kept Rhona from accomplishing what she’s set her mind to doing, whether it is creating her website, developing the menu or managing social media for Ramsi’s Cafe, teaching cooking classes with Holiwell Health, becoming a certified health coach, or developing an online plant-based cooking curriculum. ARE YOU A PLANNER? I’m definitely a planner and an over-planner, sometimes to the point of paralysis. I’m working on that.
DO YOU HAVE ANY HOBBIES? Photography, but I use it in my work. Cooking is a hobby, but I use it in my work. Writing … but I use it in my work.
SueAnna Masterson
Ericka ChavezGraziano
Grace DeluiseKoenig 2017
FAVORITE TREATS? Trifles. I love that combination of cake, whipped cream, fruit, and custard. That’s a genius combination.
WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS CARRY WITH YOU? I always have a pen and paper. I can’t leave the house without two beverages. One is going to be water, and the other is going to be a smoothie or tea.
2007
WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? In winter, I wear whatever keeps me warmest. In summer, a pencil skirt, T-shirt, Converse shoes, and a blazer.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST FEAR YOU’VE HAD TO OVERCOME PROFESSIONALLY? The fear that writing about food is not important. I’ve had my own health struggles over the past few years, and I see how impactful food is to our health and our happiness.
2005
WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE? The biggest challenge is being able to focus on any one thing enough. I love all the different things I’m doing, but I never have enough time to focus on any one of them as much as I want to.
WHAT DO YOU NOT LIKE TO DO IN THE KITCHEN? I don’t like to bake. It’s so meticulous. And I don’t like making soups.
2014
HOW DO YOU RELIEVE STRESS? I really am a big advocate for meditation. I started studying it in college, and it has saved my life a thousand times.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE FOODS TO MAKE? Traditional comfort food dishes, such as white bean cassoulet. I love to roast a chicken; there’s something just really comforting about that. I like braising things.
2016
SOMETHING YOU JUST LOVE? I’m addicted to podcasts. I love Louis Howes’ The School of Greatness, The Good Life Project, The Business of Being, and Entrepology. They are an amazing way to stay inspired.
2006
QUALITIES YOU ADMIRE IN YOURSELF? The same as what I admire in others. It took some time to realize that I am a kind person by nature, and that doesn’t make me a weak person.
HOW HAS DEALING WITH LYME DISEASE IMPACTED YOU? Before I got sick, I was a big advocate for a healthy diet and lifestyle, but I was also very opinionated. I thought if you were a vegan and meditated, you could conquer anything. But it really taught me that our health has so many different aspects, and it gave me tremendous compassion for people who deal with illness.
2015
WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU ADMIRE IN OTHER PEOPLE? Kindness and honesty. I love people who have a peaceful, quiet energy.

ethany Cox Snider never imagined she would be in health administration. She is a self-admitted planner who would plan for next week, next month, and the next five years because she likes to stay focused and motivated. Her “plans,” however, didn’t include her current position. When the Hosparus Health opportunity presented itself sooner in her career than she anticipated, she worried about putting herself at risk but knew that the path to her personal and professional development required her to take a chance. She allowed her faith, and the support of her husband, to guide her. PAGE 40>>

QUALITIES YOU MOST ADMIRE IN OTHER PEOPLE? Honesty, humility, patience (because that’s something I struggle with), and unwavering faith in the midst of trials. QUALITIES YOU ADMIRE IN YOURSELF? Compassion. I am a very honest person, but it’s honesty with respect, grace, and kindness. My internal drive to make things better.

2003
HAS BEING A PALLIATIVE/HOSPICE PHYSICIAN CHANGED HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT DEATH? I wouldn’t say I fear death because I know this is just a stop along the way. I think that’s critical for me to remember as I care for people.
FAVORITE SONGS TO PLAY ON PIANO? My all-time favorite piano piece is Debussy’s Clair de Lune. There’s a Christian song called Lamb of God; it’s a piano arrangement, and I just love it.
2015
DO YOU HAVE BOTH FEET IN ADMINISTRATION OR DO YOU STILL DO PATIENT CARE? I told Hosparus Health, “I’m more valuable to you by still doing patient care than coming out of it completely.” That’s what brings me joy, and that’s why I spent 12 years in training. I’m in the field with our staff, living the challenges that they face. It makes me a better advocate.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE FEELING STRESSED? Prayer and music. I keep a book in my car that has one-minute prayers. I’ve played the piano my whole life. Usually when I’m having a rough day, I go home and play the piano.
2005
FAVORITE TREAT? French fries at Caffe Classico on Frankfort Avenue.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAD SIX MONTHS FREE OF OBLIGATIONS OR FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS? I would spend time with my family, and a lot of that would be at home. And of course, travel. I would take my family to Italy. It’s one of my favorite places. I love how the history is right in the center of modern society.
2014
A LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY? I try to reflect on my behavior and attitudes and how they will impact others, particularly in the work I do. Many things showed me how important it is to think about your attitude, your tone, because you never know what someone else is facing that day. I saw that in my training.
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF YOUR POSITION AT HOSPARUS? I’m very new to my current role. Because my heart is in patient care, that’s my priority. A challenge, or an opportunity, is for me to recognize that the administrative piece is as important because I can help affect the system at a global level.

C
heryl Susemichel has been sharing her Southern charm and love of gardening with Louisvillians for over two decades at Secret Garden. Even though she had owned a computer forms business, Forms Plus, and a florist shop, owning a retail store was a new experience and brought its own challenges. Her belief in what she was doing, though, has kept her energized and enthusiastic. In addition to the satisfaction of owning her own business, she feels pride in the fearlessness of her daughter, Stephanie, who opened her own boutique, Magnolia & Fig, in 2016. PAGE 44>>

WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU ADMIRE IN OTHER PEOPLE? Honesty, hard work, and compassion.
WHAT IS A PERFECT DAY FOR YOU? The sun is shining, it’s 75 degrees, and not raining: a perfect day for gardening.
QUALITIES YOU ADMIRE IN YOURSELF? I’m a very hard-working person and energetic. I tend to be a giving person. I have customers sometimes that just need to talk. I try to be compassionate.
FAVORITE TREAT? Peach cobbler, Southern style and homemade. If it’s not a dessert, I’m a french fry snob.
WHAT IS A MISTAKE YOU LEARNED FROM? When I moved the store from Middletown to Forest Green Boulevard. I moved in a hurry because my lease was up. I was sort of under-the-gun. But I stayed with it for the five years of my lease, and I learned that you should take your time when it’s about moving your store. When I got the invitation to move to Westport Village, I really thought that one out.
HOW DO YOU RELIEVE STRESS? Gardening. The good thing about gardening is that you’ve got solitude. Now I have a little two-year-old grandson, my first grandchild, that’s also my stress relief. I keep Emerson on Mondays, and he’s already learning how to garden. I gave him a little red rake.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY OR CAME INTO A LOT OF MONEY? I would still do Secret Garden and my greenhouse, but I would use that money to do things that I’m passionate about. I would give a boatload of money to Home of the Innocents and Hildegard House. I might go to the beach a little more.
2015
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF RUNNING YOUR OWN RETAIL BUSINESS? Competing with internet sales like Amazon.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FLOWER? A gardenia. I was born and raised in the deep South (Dothan, Alabama), and I had two grandmothers who both had gardenia bushes. To this very day, when I smell gardenia blooms, it brings me back to that memory of being a child and being with my grandparents.
2005
WERE YOU SCARED TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS? I had no fear. Louisville did not have a really good garden and home decor store. I had to go to Cincinnati to the Smith & Hawken store to buy good garden things, shoes, hats, etc. One day, I was driving back from Cincinnati and thought, “Why don’t I just start a garden store?”
WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE WITH YOU WHEN YOU ARE GARDENING? My pruners, a perennial spade that belonged to my husband’s grandfather, and my Joyce Chen scissors.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE FOOD? I love the hamburger at Le Moo with the egg on top. My favorite food is sushi.
IS IT DIFFICULT BEING A LOCAL CELEBRITY? Louisville is such a gracious city, and people are so nice. You want them to say hello and ‘I watch you’ because that’s good ratings. There’s no negative, unless I haven’t had my two cups of coffee. 2006
ARE YOU ABLE TO TUNE-OUT MEDIA? I don’t listen to music; I listen to news. I don’t think you can tune out media, especially in today’s world with social media. You’re always needing to get information out there, and people expect so much more.
WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? I’m so lucky that my mother is a great seamstress. She makes quite a few of my dresses, which is awesome because it’s hard to find things that fit you perfectly. My style doesn’t really differ that much when I’m offair. I might wear funky earrings.
2015
IF YOU COULD DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT YOU DO PROFESSIONALLY, WHAT WOULD IT BE? My real answer might be real estate. In a dream world, I’d love to be a horse trainer even though I don’t know anything about it.
DO YOU GET YOURSELF READY TO GO ON AIR? I’m very lucky in that the other markets I’ve worked in, I had a full-time makeup person. I had my makeup done every single day before going on air. I really learned from some great makeup artists some of the best tools to use and some tricks. I never go without fake eyelashes on air. Now I do it myself here.
2005
WHAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES OF YOUR JOB? I always tell young people who say they want this job — you have to give up so much of your personal life. While other people might be out on Friday nights, I’m working. While other people are together on holidays, I’m working.
Rachel Platt
HOW WAS YOUR SON COLT’S HEART CONDITION (AND LATER SURGERY AND CARDIAC ARREST) A PIVOTAL POINT FOR YOU PROFESSIONALLY? I used to sweat the small stuff. I don’t worry about things that happen at work as much anymore. I have a totally different set of priorities because it really was life or death. That event was key for us deciding to move back to Louisville. After going through that, we decided we wanted a different life.
2014
DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE IN BROADCASTING? For a very brief stint, I thought I wanted to be a doctor.
HOW DO YOU RELIEVE STRESS? I’d love to be that person who says I go for weekly manicures or pedicures or a weekly massage, but I don’t have time for that. I go for a walk, get on my spin bike, or go to hot yoga.

icki Aubrey Welch spent 30 years as a nurse before moving into politics, and for four years, she was both a nurse and a politician. She finds many similarities between the two professions. As a nurse, she took care of individual people, but as a legislator, she has made policies for the health and safety of the entire community. After 13 years on the Metro Council, she will retire in December. She hopes to enjoy more time at her condo in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she can truly disconnect from email and phone calls. ARE YOU A PLANNER OR DO YOU PREFER TO WING IT? Definitely a planner. With my schedule, no two days are alike. I may have four things I have to go to in the evening between 5 and 9. WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR PROFESSIONAL FEARS? I was very shy as a child, up until my 20s. When I became PTSA President at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and Butler Traditional High School, I was able to overcome my fear of public speaking.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR “BEST” FAILURE? My first marriage, but we created a wonderful daughter, and it taught me to be more aware in relationships and don’t sweat the small stuff. I found my white knight, Matt Welch, at my 10-year high school reunion. MOST ADMIRED WOMAN 2018 VICKI AUBREY WELCH

2003
WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO WHEN YOU RETIRE? I want to rock drug-addicted babies in the NICU as my nursing volunteer area. I also want to do Meals on Wheels for seniors.
WHEN HAVE YOU FELT THE MOST SATISFIED IN YOUR LIFE? When my two daughters were young, I took four years off work due to illness in my youngest. It was wonderful to be fully involved in their lives. I had time to cook healthy meals at home for them and not be so rushed.
2005
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE DESSERT OR TREAT? There is a restaurant called Village Inn in Florida that has “Free Pie Wednesdays.” They have those super deluxe peanut butter chocolate pies or coconut cream pies. Those two are my big favorites.
“I LOVE TO SEW. I USED TO MAKE A LOT OF MY CLOTHES. . .”
DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL HOBBY OR SKILL? I love to sew. My mother taught me. I used to make a lot of my clothes in high school. When I had my girls, I made them matching dresses and hair bows. It’s very creative and makes you feel good to make something and see somebody wear it.
2008
DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO BE ON YOUR “BEST BEHAVIOR” AS A POLITICIAN? I am the face of local government, and I always try to act and dress and portray myself in the most professional manner. I feel like that is what is expected of me.
WHAT IS A SPECIAL ITEM YOU ALWAYS HAVE WITH YOU? My ring I bought after my dad died. He never knew I was in public office; he died in 1998 of leukemia. It reminds me of him and the values that I got through him.
2007
WHAT IS A MISCONCEPTION THE PUBLIC HAS ABOUT WORKING IN POLITICS? People think we have more power than we do.

POSITIVE CHANGES We headed out into some different neighborhoods to meet women and see what they are currently working on changing in their lives. (Photos and Interview by Brigid Morrissey)
“I started going to church for the first time last fall. It’s been a life changer. Haven’t missed a Sunday since. ...Never belonged to a church before.” — Amy Helton
“I moved here from Rhode Island a year and a half ago. I’ve worked on building relationships with others and the way I communicate, learning to take a step back, breathe, instead of immediately reacting to something like I used to do. I’m slowing down to take the time to reflect before I react, which has drastically improved both personally and professionally.” — Cheryl Stabile
“I moved my business into a new space that is double the size. It was available when I opened the original space, but I didn’t go for it then because I wanted to start small and have the opportunity to grow into it.
THAT’S HAPPENING NOW AND IT IS A DREAM COME TRUE AND IS VERY EXCITING.” — Michelle Ryan, owner of True North Boutique

“I started exercising and being more health conscious. I’m not stressed about things I can’t change. And, I started working with my husband again in the same office (at AllTerrain Paving) — I enjoy working with him.” — Maria Triplett

“I bought a radio station in October that I’ve been trying to buy for three-and-ahalf years. I’ve been in radio for over 30 years but I’ve never managed one or been involved from beginning to end. It’s been a super humbling experience.” -Sunny Stephens
“I took up Latin dancing. I just wanted to shake up my physical routine and do something different.” Sharlie also changed her food to help her sleep. “Not what I ate, but how I ate and when I ate it. For instance, unless I’m going to do something that requires a lot of energy, I stopped eating starches after 6 in the evening.”
“My mom passed away in October. She was diagnosed with cancer for the third time. I’m a nurse so I knew it wouldn’t be a good outcome. It was really hard for me. I think seeing the love my mom and dad had for each other was so beautiful. She taught my dad how to do the laundry, iron his clothes, and her other duties. It was a blessing from God to give her time to teach him those things. My husband and I were able to learn from that, and our marriage has changed because of it.” — Caitlin Yokley

“I just recently sold my house and bought a new home to accommodate my elderly parents. I’ve adjusted mentally into focusing on my mother and her health, helping her to regain her health. She has Alzheimer’s. The doctors don’t give you many options; you have to figure things out on your own. We’re always learning from the next generation — learning how to live and leave the planet.” — Sharon DeLuca

Lindsay Clark changed three areas of her life and says, “I’m able to deal with things more maturely, like acceptance of other people and things that happen in life.” • “I started running three miles a day.” • “Part of my day is spent praying and meditating. It’s been helpful in dealing with everyday stresses.” • “I started going to a counselor. It’s nice to hear a different point of view.”
“I recently lost my job of 18 years so I’m using the time to ask God what to do next. I have time to meditate in the mornings, and to volunteer at Hildegard House, and to walk four miles on the walking bridge” (even on windy days!).
“IT’S TURNED OUT TO BE A NICE BLESSING.” — Debbie Walker

ouisville is well known for its outstanding food scene, and Game is one of the many reasons why. Offering anything from a kangaroo burger to fried frog legs to some of the best Scotch eggs you’ll ever have, Game has a plate to please any appetite. Aside from its specialty exotic meats, the restaurant also serves up one of the best veggie burgers I’ve ever eaten. For out-of-this world flavor, try the Grilled Corn, Poblano, Garbanzo Veggie burger and add truffle oil to your side of hand-cut fries. (Yes, the truffle oil is absolutely worth the extra $2.) The menu is complete with a delicious selection of appetizers, salads, and even an option to build-your-own burger. Meat options include: wagyu, duck, alpaca, and wild boar, just to name a few. A wide variety of cheeses, breads, toppings, and sauces are also available to round out your perfect burger. The cozy, rustic decor offers lots of natural light. Game is an absolute must-try on your bucket list of Louisville restaurants.
