Be Your

Sometimes, I have a problem doing what’s best for me. For instance, it would be best for me to exercise at least four times a week instead of one to two times a week, but taking initiative counts. In our annual Best for You issue, we’re giving you some ideas on where and who to consult to make small tweaks that will improve the way you look and feel about yourself. We’ve featured 30 businesses — starting on page 30 — that will get you started on your path toward self improvement. January is a great time for you to find out where to go for a good workout, fresh food, healthier skin, or intellectual stimulation. Let this issue be your guide for moving from a life that is okay into one that is the best for you. A Sock Fanatic

WHAT WORKS

by LUCY M. PRITCHETT / photos by MELISSA DONALD Adriena Dame, 42, co-founder and designer of SOSAJI! & Co., 2801 Bardstown Rd., a boutique that sells, among other items, comfortable and stylish socks; writer and publisher; jewelry designer HOMETOWN: Pine Bluff, Ark. NEIGHBORHOOD: East End HOUSEHOLD: Son, Tristan, 15 WEBSITE: sosaji.com

SOCK-IT-TO-ME I have always been a fanatic about socks. Now I get to design them. Julia (Crittendon) and I started SOSAJI!, our sock business, as an online store in January 2014 and opened our shop in the Highlands in June. Our first design, which we have sold out of, featured stripes and arrows. Our second generation design, Equine Crew, features horses and fleurs-de-lis. My favorite is the orange sock with purple horses and green and yellow stripes. This design comes in four other color combinations: black with red horses, green with blue and purple horses, white with UK-blue horses, and white with blue horses and red fleurs-de-lis. They are made of recycled combed cotton and manufactured in Turkey. STAYING ORGANIZED I couldn’t live without my Franklin-Covey black leather, zippered organizer binder. It holds my monthly calendar and daily pages, priority sheets, business cards, pencils, my son’s choir and cross-country meet schedules, checks, and cash. I am very old-school when it comes to this. I have tried to use my phone calendar, and I can’t get my fingers to work. Somehow my brain just won’t let me do it that way. I have to be connected with pencil and paper. Since I was 15, my parents have given me the calendar refill pages every year on my birthday – January 1. Part of the process I enjoy is looking back over the weekly pages and reflecting on what I have done. Then I get to cross those days off. KEEPING IT ALL TOGETHER My leather utility belt/hip pack makes me so happy. It is a necessary part of my life. The belt is made by Warrior Creek in Texas. It is made of soft leather and has antique brass hardware. I can go purse-free because it holds my phone, ID and cash, and paper and pencil. There is also a secret zippered compartment. I wear it with jeans and to formal occasions as well. It is like magic. It is fun to look at and practical. I have one in each color – black, a dark whiskey brown, and a lighter brown.

Pam Stallings admits to having many turning points in her life, but the one that she says brought her family — both immediate and extended — closer together was in 2006 when her daughter Samantha was diagnosed with a brain stem kink, a rare condition that necessitated surgery and a one-year recovery period. The surgery was performed at a hospital in Iowa City. Afterward, Samantha was in a body brace for eight months and then a neck brace. There were followup visits to Iowa. Two retired teachers from her school, St. Patrick’s, helped her stay current with her schoolwork so she was able to graduate with her eighthgrade class. During this time, Pam says her role as mother expanded to being educator, motivator, and friend. “Once she was diagnosed, I spent many evenings on the Internet researching and trying to find out as much information as I could about her condition,” she says. Pam says she has always been a motivator, but her skills were sharpened as she kept up not only her daughter’s spirits but her own as well. “Our motto became ‘Never give up,’” she says. And no one did. One source of quiet inspiration continues to be the daily email Pam receives from thinkaboutgod.org. “It comes with a quote, an action, and a prayer. It is how I start my day.” Samantha’s health is stable now, and she will graduate from Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., in May. Pam still depends on many of the tools she used during Samantha’s illness: long walks, listening to music, and watching sports. “From this experience, I know that with reasoning and persistence, obstacles don’t have to stop you,” Pam says. “We all have our own struggles. Our strength comes from overcoming things you once thought you couldn’t do. You face your fears head-on with faith and grace. And, at the end of the day, thank God for your many blessings.” TODAY’S WOMAN

Survival Skills

By MARIE BRADBY / Photos by MELISSA DONALD

Pamela’s rules for managing a work team:

1. Smile. This makes

me approachable, so associates know they can come to me with questions. If I’m smiling, the associates see me and can calm down and talk to me in a calm voice.

2. Get all the facts

and be a good listener as you try to resolve a problem. Then you need to know who to go to for help.

3.

Don’t let problems escalate. Your communication skills have to be excellent when dealing with people so they don’t take what you are saying the wrong way.

Pamela Sharp, Learning Associate, Amazon Fulfillment Center Jeffersonville, Ind.

4.

Her Toolkit for Success A

fter years in banking, Pamela Sharp decided she wanted a change and a new location for herself, her husband, and her three sons, so she joined the U.S. Army. She and her family were stationed in Hanau, Germany. She became a cook and also traveled to Paris, France. “I was looking for a new outlook on life and to be able to travel,” says Pamela, 56, now a learning associate for the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Jeffersonville, Ind. When she returned to civilian life, she was hired through Amazon’s military recruiting team, which seeks out former military personnel. Pamela, who has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in conflict management, has trained many of the 2,500 employees in the 1-million-square-foot fulfillment center — the size of 20 football fields.

14

JANUARY

2015

“Working in the military, you are able to build a relationship with the people you work with,” Pamela says. “I use that experience here with associates and leadership in order to build a stronger relationship and to get our Amazon goals accomplished. “In the military, we were so closely knit — we were like a little family. I use that relationship model. I am really close with the people here. If there is a problem, I can go to them and they can come to me, and we seek the answer to solve it. That’s how we remove the barriers so the orders can be filled. “When our new associates come, we have an information toolkit that specifies break time and lunch time, provides a picture of their supervisor, goals, and a cheat sheet. That kit guides them to success.”

Be excellent. I was originally hired as a temporary seasonal worker, but my positive attitude and determination were noticed, and I was hired as a full-time employee. I’m now responsible for training new employees.

5. Dive deep. The

Army taught me to solve problems by digging into the details and considering multiple perspectives. Trying to answer a question or find a solution at a superficial level is only a short-term fix. By looking at all angles and gathering details from multiple sources, I often find a better solution.

TODAY’S WOMAN

23THINGS Why 23? Because we are 23 years old!

Did you resolve to be healthier for the New Year?

Happenings, news, celebrations, and tidbits that caught Today’s Woman’s eye this month.

Healthy ideas that work from the Today’s Woman staff:

2. Hard-Boiled Perfection

By ANITA OLDHAM

1 Need a new book for the cold winter days? I consulted with Today’s Family Assistant Editor and librarianat-heart Elaine Jack for a book recommendation. She suggests Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood. “The author, an artist in late middle age, recalls events from childhood that have shaped her whole life. The cool part is that when she is telling about the stuff that happened when she was 11, she inhabits the mind of her 11-year-old self. When I read it, I could remember feeling just that way when I was 11, but I couldn’t possibly have come up with it on my own from this vantage point.” Quotes from the book: • “Potential has a shelf life.” • “The past isn’t quaint while you’re in it. Only at a safe distance, later, when you can see it as decor, not as the shape your life’s been squeezed into.” • “I walk the halls, surrounded by an aura of potential verbal danger, and am treated with caution, which suits me fine.”

6. A Quick Breakfast “I’ve found a few healthy things that keep me full until lunchtime that take about three minutes to make,” says Jessica Alyea. “A smoothie, plain Greek yogurt swirled with apples and cinnamon, or even Panera Bread has some new breakfast sandwiches made with sprouted bread, which is low-carb and easier on your body.”

Add a little salt, and a hard-boiled egg is like the perfect food. “I usually boil a dozen eggs at once and peel them as I eat them,” says designer April Allman. “My kids love them and get into my stash all the time, so then they have to peel their own. I like to think it teaches them some patience.”

3. Be Accountable

Exercise with a friend or find some way to make it fun. “I hate running and using gym equipment is boring to me, but my friend and colleague Tiffany White and I sometimes walk in the mall or play a dance game on my Wii,” says Jessica Alyea, assistant editor and designer.

4. Nix the Plastic

“I am reducing plastic in my life because I feel like it negatively affects my health,” says photographer Melissa Donald.

5. Time For Yourself

“I’m making time for yoga, riding my bike — both inside and outside — and working with hands-on creative projects,” adds Melissa Donald.

Our Cover Girl’s “Best” Things Sarah Smith has many talents: she is an event coordinator with York Management, aesthetician at Sei Bella Waxing, and public relations maven with Bella Vita Media. “I am trying to figure out which paths are best for me to carry into the next stage of my life,” she says. In her free time, Sarah also stays connected to the best things that make her feel good. Here’s her list: 7. Germantown: “I just moved there. It is a little far from where I work and where my parents and friends live, but it is such an old neighborhood. You’ll see people walking around there that have lived there their entire lives.” 8. Jack Fry’s: “The food never fails to be what it has been. Every time you walk in, you feel like you are home.” 9. Kentucky Travel: “I love driving through the counties to see the land and horse farms. This is my home, and I love it.” — Tiffany White; photo: Melissa Donald

A Different Ring

and children’s author (writer of Today’s Woman Survival Skills)

• Have my friends over more often for movie night, board games, or just a light supper. Getting together with my friends gives me a chance to relax, laugh, and enjoy their company. • Take a train ride — the Amtrak Starlight — along the Pacific Coast from Los Angeles to Seattle. I know of an author who writes all her books while riding on a train. I think this dramatic route would be inspiring for the muse and the soul. • Plant bulbs for spring. The squirrels have eaten most of my tulips. • Clean out my garage. It’s time for this stuff to find a new home. • Do a sitting or walking meditation daily. This helps me to de-clutter my mind and listen to God.

– twenty-one –

“I am going to sit down one-on-one with my clients each month and teach them something new I have learned at a seminar or through a class,” Alison says. “I will then follow up with them via email or text to make sure they are applying it in their life. “Also, my daughter, Alexa, is a very picky eater! I want to introduce fresh juices and smoothies to her. My goal is to buy a juicer and have her help make a shake. You would be surprised, but spinach and kale blended with coconut and banana tastes great!”

Caroline Knop,

Alison Cardoza, ACSM certified personal trainer at Baptist East Milestone Wellness Center

“I have a calendar on my desk at all times, regimented in exercise and work ethic,” Caroline says. She adds that her overall resolution is to keep the passion and dedication in her life, work, and love alive and strong. “I come from an athletic background and family. My father (who played center for Johnny Unitas and is a University of Louisville Football Hall of Fame member) taught us all to be driven and never give up. His favorite quote was, ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going!’”

owner of Simply PR

Donna is planning on making changes in 2015 but didn’t want to provide a specific, measurable goal. When I twisted her arm, she came up with this: 1. Write the resolution down on paper (makes it real). 2. List what I need to do. List will include cleaning out home office desk and cabinet. Taking all out and replacing only what’s needed. 3. Look at list each morning. 4. Review list throughout the day.

5. Begin with setting an hour each day to work on resolution. 6. Look at list again. 7. Ponder list. 8. Have a glass of wine. 9. Get large garbage bag. 10. Call and hire professional organizer.

Donna Riley, president of Women’s Foundation of Southern Indiana

“I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions — I don’t believe in waiting until January to start making improvements — but right now I’m trying to work out at least five times a week. (I make check marks in my planner to track my progress. Some weeks are better than others.) Yelena Sapin, freelance writer who did this issue’s Best for You interviews

LOOKS BOOK:

POP YOUR EYES

By KELLY SHORT / Photos: MELISSA DONALD MODEL: TARA KESTLER

D

enise Cardwell, makeup artist at Blades Salon & Spa, offers some tried-andtrue techniques for a gaze that demands attention. She begins with clean skin and a primer such as MAC primer. Step-By-Step

1. Choose the right eyeshadow brush. Cardwell suggests using sable brushes because they are made from horsehair which is porous and grabs onto pigment easily.

2. Use a matte color to highlight the brow bone. 3. A lways puts a little of the same shade on the inner eyes. “Putting the color on the inner eye expands the size of the eye, creating the illusion of larger eyes,” Cardwell says.

4. Cardwell finishes off the look by lining the top

lid with L’Oréal liner and the bottom lid with Estée Lauder crayon. She chose this combination because women often prefer the dramatic look of liquid liner on the top rather than on the bottom of the eyes to avoid a harsh line. After applying the crayon, Cardwell smudges it for a natural look. The smudge technique also gives the illusion of fuller lashes on the bottom.

5. Finish off with a mascara such as Maybelline Great Lash or 3D Fiber Lash Mascara.

Age Guide In Your 20s

In Your 30s

In Your 40s and 50s

In Your 60s

“Anything goes,” says Cardwell. This is the time to experiment with color and techniques. Adult skin is at its best during this time.

Let the health of the your skin be your guide. Bolder color can still be applied to healthy skin. Use a quality eye cream such as Clarins or Clinique for sensitive skin. Cardwell also suggests wearing an SPF 15 sunscreen or higher. “The skin around the eye is so thin, and it doesn’t take much to damage and dry it out,” she says.

Keep the color subtle and matte after age 45. “Never use shimmer on sagging or wrinkled eyelids. For those who have wrinkles around the eye, hooded or sagging eyelids, Cardwell suggests changing the crease line position of the eyelid. “The crease line is where the color normally stops. I apply the color higher up to give an illusion of a higher crease line so that the eyes don’t look hooded, droopy or heavy. This makes the eyes look more wide open.”

Women in this age group, Cardwell says, should concentrate more on mascara and less on eye shadow. Using a lengthening mascara like the 3D Fiber Lash Mascara masks imperfections around the eyes. Also, women tug at the corner of the eyelids when applying liner on the top, but Cardwell says this reduces the visibility. So, just apply the liner where the skin naturally falls. She suggests using dark eye shadow in place of liner.

MOSTLY A’S: Beginners Hot Yoga

OK, so exercise isn’t at the top of your list, but don’t despair. There is a yoga for first-timers. Beginners Hot Yoga incorporates 30-40 exercises including two breathing exercises. “This type of hot yoga takes place in a room heated from 85 to 90 degrees,” says Kristi Fulkerson, owner of Yoga on Baxter. The heat makes the body more supple in order to stretch a little further and also helps prevent straining or pulling of muscles.” Beginners Hot Yoga builds flexibility, concentration, and balance. It is never too late to get sweating with the yogis. MOSTLY B’S: Restorative

It’s out with the old and new injuries for you. Restorative yoga is slower-paced, allowing you to explore what your body needs in the moment. Karen Allen, RN and registered yoga instructor for the YMCA, says, “Restorative yoga can reduce anxiety and build strength and range of motion for an injury using blocks or other props to aid in correct positioning.” This type of yoga uses supine or seated yoga poses to eliminate unnecessary straining. Each pose is held for longer periods of time to promote deep relaxation. MOSTLY C’S: Vinyasa

Your fast-paced personality has you burning the chakra candle at both ends. Exercise that energy in a Vinyasa yoga class. Also called flow yoga due to the fluid way the poses run together like a dance, Vinyasa synchronizes movement with the breath. “Vinyasa is a more athletic type of yoga,” Fulkerson says. “It requires upper-body strength and would be perfect for those needing constant movement.” MOSTLY D’S: Kundalini

Depak Chopra has nothing on you. Your deep sense of spirituality will fit harmoniously with Kundalini yoga. “This is an enlightenment-based yoga with more chanting and mantras,” Allen says. Also known as the yoga of awareness, Kundalini yoga focuses on awakening energy and bringing balance to the mind, body, and soul. So bring your tired, huddled masses and learn to breathe free.

She Kicks It!

By CARRIE VITTITOE Photo by MELISSA DONALD

Summer Guthrie

S

ummer Guthrie will be the first to say that she purposely tries to lead an interesting life. She says, “I like to keep a life that I can be excited about.” While working at Galyan’s (now Dick’s Sporting Goods), she transferred to Denver, Colo., to explore both the mountainous landscape and the yoga community. During her nine years in Denver, she became a licensed financial representative with Janus Capital Group and also worked as a culinary instructor because of her passion for cooking. She recently returned to her Southern Indiana roots to spend more time with her family, including five nephews under age 10. Eager to find a new challenge, she is in the process of opening a food truck called Cabin Grill, which will offer a simple menu of comfort foods sourced from local farms. She expects to be busy but is using the mindfulness of her beloved yoga practice to achieve the goals she sets for herself. yogisummer@gmail.com Nominate a woman for Today’s Woman Kicks It at TodaysWomanNow.com 26

Beyond Paper H

ow many of you remember what the January 1992 issue of Today’s Woman looked like? She was a bit larger — 11x17, black-and-white, and printed on newsprint, but thin at 32 pages. Today’s Woman was the only child with no sister publications and digital was one of the new-fangled clocks where the number panels dropped as each minute passed. I am proud to say that Today’s Woman has transformed to a full-color magazine averaging 84 pages and introducing our readers to hundreds of fascinating women in each issue. Our interactive website TodaysWomanNow.com averages more than 6,000 monthly visitors who are viewing the online version of our magazine, seeking ideas for activities, getting fashion advice, and registering for weekly giveaways. s hiring a trainer just for the rich and famous? Not anymore. You can find reasonably priced trainers at most gyms or even some who come to your home. Rates vary by location and trainer. For instance, JP charges $45 for a 30-minute session, but less if you purchase more sessions. At Milestone, you can purchase personal training sessions. Non-member rates are $70 for one hour; $50 for 30 minutes. One hour partner training is $50 per person. One hour group training with 3-4 is $40 per person.

high blood pressure. Although a lifelong athlete, Lisa had stopped making exercise a priority. “I was burned out since I wasn’t seeing any progress,” Lisa says. “It had stopped being fun.” Lisa met Jon Powers (known as JP) when he was a trainer at a small gym. “I just wanted to improve my strength and cardio a bit,” she says. “When I started with him, I had simply accepted that weight gain and high blood pressure were inevitable with age.” Hesitant at first, Lisa tried a sample workout with the trainer. “He gave me my motivation, and I learned a lot,” she says, crediting JP with changing her life. When JP opened his own gym, BodySolutionz, Lisa followed him. “One of the things I like best is that I am the only person in the gym when I train with JP,” Lisa says. She enjoys the privacy to discuss

her goals and what she’s struggling with. In the last two years, Lisa has lost 30 pounds and is off blood pressure medication. JP taught Lisa how to use nutrition for workouts, to feed muscle development, and to manage fat loss. “Nutrition and exercise have to walk hand-in-hand,” Lisa says. Six small meals a day, beginning with complex carbohydrates, energize Lisa. The surprise for Lisa is her selfconfidence and motivation. She exercises at her own gym first thing in the morning and challenges herself in ways she never thought she would. “Meeting with JP one day a week holds me accountable,” Lisa says. “I want to be strong enough to get through his workout. I think sometimes I work so hard because I don’t have the heart to disappoint him.”

LET GO OF CONTROL and allow energy to flow By BOB MUELLER

N

o one likes to be controlled. Do you know anyone who likes it? Do your children, employees, spouse, or friends thank you for trying to be totally in charge of their lives? Striving for control does not endear you to anyone. In fact, it usually gets the opposite reaction. The harder you push, the more they rebel. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In your face or behind your back, you receive a big dose of “you can’t make me.” We are fighting a futile battle if we work for total control. So much of our fretting — about, expecting-to, and planningon energy is wasted. Yearning for control doesn’t give us the freedom, peace, and connection we all want. It doesn’t satisfy the sense of security and order we crave. It makes us physically ill, mentally exhausted, and spiritually drained. Striving for control doesn’t work very well or very often. It does not make us powerful. If we stop striving for control, what is the alternative? What makes us feel better than trying to get a handle on everything? The spiritual gurus tell us that we need to let go. That’s probably sage advice, but I have been holding on for dear life, and maybe like you, I am afraid to let go. I envision falling into a big black abyss full of dirty laundry, unpaid bills, and missed appointments. I confess that sweet surrender never sounded all that sweet to me. Feeling in control gives us a temporary sense of instant gratification. We operate under the equation: Control equals feeling good about ourselves. When people are emotionally “out of control,” we often suggest they slow down and breathe deeply. “Come on,” we coax. “Sit down a minute, and take a few deep breaths.” We never say, “You are so upset. Let’s see how long you can hold your breath.” We associate energy, peace, and calmness with breathing deeply.

Yet you can’t take a new breath if you don’t let go of the old one. Exhaling (letting go of the air) is the power move. Athletes know this. When they lift weights in the gym, they lift the bar off their chest into the air as they exhale. They blow out and let that energy make them stronger. Letting go does not mean you become spineless, dependent, apathetic, or incapable. It means you tap into your energy. You do not waste it forcing, judging, limiting, or withholding. This allows energy to flow to and through you, and you get more of what you want. This energy is readily available. We don’t need more money, long-term therapy, or a faster Internet connection. We simply need an intense desire to stop squeezing so tightly, making sure everything turns out all right, and ending up exhausted from holding on, going nowhere. If you let go, you can use your powers to get you into the flow of life. Energy is our reward for letting go. Time and again, when you overcome your urge to control, energy will be the payoff. It doesn’t matter what you are writing: your grocery list, the proposal for a new client, or your life goals. Relaxing and opening up to possibilities allows energy to flow through you. A natural high truly is the reward. If you are willing to open up to the possibilities, be patient with the evolution of events, and have faith in some force other than yourself, you are ready for the new equation. Keep in mind that what we’re after is energy. Let go, and then do everything with your power. Powering up is letting go of control and allowing your energy to flow. Powering up is feeling good about yourself. Making changes takes practice. At first the concept of letting go was about as attractive to me as having little growths on my chin. I’m convinced powering up is one of the answers to our problem of having too much to do. Give power a chance.

NAME: Katie Mac Murphy AGE: 26 JOB: Fashion Stylist and Image/Wardrobe Consultant for the Tracy Varga Group LIVES IN: Crescent Hill Fashion has been Katie Mac Murphy’s passion since age 7. As a child, she would go to the butler’s pantry — also known as “the secret room” — inside of her parents’ home. While there, she’d tear out images of models and clothing from fashion magazines and use them to create large scrapbooks and collages. Nineteen years later, she still makes collages for inspiration to nurture her personal style and skill as a fashion stylist. In her job, Katie helps clients develop a style based on their personality, preferences, and body shape. “This is what I love to do,” she says. Katie places a high value on the satisfaction she gets from working with people in the fashion industry — whether they are clients or fellow colleagues. Twice a week, she works at Clodhoppers which gives her an opportunity to network with like-minded people while growing her client list. For relaxation, Katie enjoys exercising and traveling. “On my wall, I have a magnetic map of the world with pins placed on all of the places I want to go.” FASHION SHE’S WEARING: “I love layers, texture, mixed metals, and mixing masculine and feminine. That is part of me. I love leather, lace and fur, and fringe. Sometimes I don’t like to be put into a box.”
