Summer Lovin’ he Game of Thrones’ hashtag this season may be #WinterIsHere, but in South Florida we’re a long way from switching off our A/C and hauling out our cozy slippers. However, let’s consider looking at summer in The Sunshine State from this perspective.

Sea breezes, warm ocean swims, a laid-back coastal lifestyle, a less-frantic and more-friendly vibe around town —we can choose to focus on what’s good, not wasting energy on something we can’t change (ahem! Acceptance being one of the teachings of yoga). Here’s why I love summer here: • You can give your parking fairy a few weeks off as you easily find space outside your favorite restaurant, enjoying a meal without waiting 45 minutes for a table (oh, that was actually two perks in one).

• We live in seasonal zip codes and many of us work crammed winter schedules which ease off in May—now is the time to make the most of slowing down and to relax and recharge, if you can. Sloth-like behavior is perfectly acceptable as you match your pace to the hazy, lazy days outside. • Repeat the mantra, “The grass is not (always) greener on the other side”— the national weather forecast shows many red-hot regions with even higher temperatures than Florida and often with the humidity to match. I’ve been in Oshkosh, WI on a sweltering 103-degrees day in July and my brain couldn’t process how it could possibly be cooler and more pleasant in Delray Beach, FL ... but it was. • The Florida Keys— people fly to this sought-after vacation spot from all over, while our quirky archipelago is just an hour and a half drive away from Delray/ Boca. Conch and cocktails, anyone? • Don’t mention the “H word” (the one that has you rushing to Publix for matches, water, and duct tape). Some other H words are Happy Hour, to be savored as our restaurants thank their local customers. Yes, yoga teaches us that all things are transient, and a half-price starter may bring only temporary delight, but hey, we’ll take a hit of happiness and relish it, in the moment. We have much to appreciate in this special place we call home. Summer means enjoying more fresh fruit, light eating, and early morning routines that include beach or nature walks before temperatures reach sizzling point. Let’s embrace our #SummerIsHere tagline as a natural part of living in South Florida, going hand-in-hand with the reward of our spectacular winters. Namaste,

oca Grove Golf and Tennis Club has added two new pickleball courts to our tennis facilities. The two new courts join the already existing red-clay stadium court and 12 HarTru clay tennis courts. Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, and is easily played by all ages. After Boca Grove hosted a pickleball demonstration event last year, the new sports addiction caught on quickly at the Club and a need for official courts became a priority. Both current and former tennis enthusiasts are finding pickleball’s smaller courts and similar style of play very appealing and younger players especially are enjoying the change of pace. Pickleball can be played as singles or doubles and is played with a paddle and plastic balls with holes. Boca Grove’s tennis courts have hosted numerous tennis professionals, including Andy Murray, Ivan Lendl, Grigor Dimitrov, and Kevin Anderson. For more visit www.bocagrove.org

Boca Adds Three New Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

T

he City of Boca Raton has added three new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to its network. Two new stations are located at City Hall (201 West Palmetto Park Road) and one at the Spanish River Library (1501 NW Spanish River Blvd). The first EV station was installed in October of 2015, at the Downtown Library. The Schneider EVlink 220-volt station can charge two vehicles at a time, enabling users to top off their car within hours while visiting the libraries or downtown. The addition of the new electric car charging stations furthers the City’s environmental stewardship efforts. The Boca Raton City Council recently passed a resolution adopting a climate action pledge and is continuing its efforts to integrate sustainability actions within the framework of the Regional Climate Action Plan. “We hope that more commercial businesses will follow our lead and start installing stations as well,” noted Mayor Susan Haynie. “Transportation models are changing and electric vehicles are a big part of that change; we all need to do our part.”

TAPAS

What’s in the Way Becomes the Way

W

hen I was a child, my father, who was raised in Brooklyn, had a “famous” saying: “Son, the 13 most important letters in the alphabet are ‘You gotta wanna’.” The way he said it read more like #yougottawanna before there were such things as hashtags. I didn’t quite get what he meant at the time. Of course I wanted things. This made no sense. But I just said, “Yeah, Dad, I know….you gotta wanna,” every time he quizzed me on the 13 most important letters. It wasn’t until years later when I was struggling to stay committed to a start-up I was working on, that those words began to resound in my mind like an echo from my childhood. I finally got it: When we encounter difficulty, struggle and the inevitable pain and pitfalls in life, we have a choice. We can either give up, or forge on. What determines our decision and defines our capacity to do this is the degree to which we can see through the surface of a situation and connect into the “deep driving desire” in the words of the Upanishads. When we do this, we find a new willingness to embrace our challenges as catalysts for our spiritual growth. In the yogic path, this is considered an essential virtue and a primary prerequisite to navigate the terrain of spiritual maturation. Find Comfort in Discomfort This quality is given the name Tapas by Patanjali in The Yoga Sutra, and is one of the “three essentials” of spiritual practice. Stay tuned for the other two—wink, wink. The word tapas translates as heat and is most often described as discipline. I define it more as devotion or dedication. It speaks to our capacity to find comfort in discomfort. In other words, when we accept our challenges as not only inevitable, but as essential signposts as to where our inner work resides, we cultivate steadfastness to move into our challenges rather than strategize ways around them. Tapas teaches us to perceive the soul’s journey home not as a path around our difficulties, but rather directly through them. One of my first yoga teachers said this so well: “The moment you want to come out of the posture is the moment the posture begins.” As with all of the teachings, there are potential pitfalls and misinterpretations. The one to be on the lookout for here is the tendency to strive in the name of spiritual effort. We must attend to the subtlety of this teaching. It’s not suggesting that we force things into fruition or that we endure unhealthy situations. It requires discernment to parse out the difference between unnecessarily struggling and “staying the course.” Remember to Remember The teaching I’d like to offer is simple. I call it Remember to Remember. It’s in our most challenging times that we tend to slip into forgetfulness and falsely identify with our difficult emotions and make decisions from that place. Remember to remember is a way of training ourselves to reconnect to our higher wisdom precisely in those times. When we find a sacred pause in the midst of personal difficulty, we find space to re-perceive our circumstance and with that discernment we can simply ask, “What would this moment look like if I were living it from my highest self?” If we learn to access and trust this inner wisdom, it will guide us through our challenges and transform them into the insights that form the foundation of a most profound freedom. As yogis what we most want is to to be awake in the world. Tapas reminds us that if we truly want this freedom, we must be willing to seek it within every moment and most especially in the difficult ones. #yougottawanna

The Seaside Sutras

Natural Rhythms of Time

O

ne thing that’s always made me smile is how the breath, even more so when it’s ujjayi breathing, sounds just like waves crashing and rolling onto a beach. There’s something so calming and natural about a rhythm that’s slow. Many of us feel like time flies by, but when you’re able to focus on effortless sounds like waves and breathing, time seems to slow down instead. The slower we breathe, the slower time goes. Conversely, the faster we breathe, the faster time seems to pass! What’s the rush, anyhow? Most natural processes take longer than a few seconds. Your body healing itself, for example. Bruises, scrapes, minor burns, even colds, all amazingly disappear. But it often takes at least a week or longer. Yet, society is wrapped up in an immediate gratification mindset. Even if you are a 100% home-cooked whole foods fanatic, you probably didn’t grow every ingredient yourself (though if you did, you are awesome). Most of us can’t escape this, at least if we wish to take part in a larger society. But, we can find peace when we slow down our perception of time.

12

todaysyoga.com

Meditative breathing (if possible, done on a comfortably breezy beach in the quiet hours of the morning!) is a conscious tool we can use to control our perception. Being mindful of the present is as easy as taking in all the rhythms that surround you and are within you. How often do you sit quietly and notice your heart faithfully beating in your chest? Can you appreciate the sounds of a busy street outside your window? What about the chop of a knife as you prepare a meal? There are even slower rhythms we can appreciate, such as flowers rotating to face the sun. If you’ve ever wished you had a pause button for life, or a time and relative dimension in space machine, it might surprise you to find you already possess one. You can’t technically freeze life processes or pop off to the 23rd century. But, you can create enough space between current moments that you have more room to move, to think, and to appreciate. With each deliberate slow breath in and out, you can transport yourself back to that breezy beach, the waves in sync with the air cycling through your body, and by recognizing thousands of these tiny moments, you can become still in time.

Nikki ‘Harini’ Bruno draws her inspiration from the natural world. She has spent time as a marine biologist, trail hiker, science teacher, yoga teacher, writer, musician, and she regularly races sailboats. She is the director of Student Coaching Services, an education company that teaches students the real-life skills they need to succeed in today’s fast-paced world.

H

ow did you start practicing yoga? I started practicing Hot Yoga in 2002 with The Barkan Method of Fort Lauderdale. Madonna said it was “cool” to do yoga in an article I read when her ‘Ray of Light’ album was popular, so I Googled ‘yoga’ with my zip code and voilà! I went through Jimmy’s Yoga Alliance recognized teacher training through The Barkan Method program (200-hour E-RYT | 500-hour RYT). We don’t always have time to get on the mat; what off-the-mat practices get you charged and ready for your day? While building my new yoga studio and getting through the third annual NamaStacy International Yoga Day, my daily practice is not so much. I have a new man in my life, named Guru. He takes up my spare time with ‘doga’ and daily doggie walks of meditation in motion. The walking is where I get to connect to myself, to nature, my breath, and my cOMmUNITY. Before Guru, I probably wouldn’t have taken the time to slow down, much less for 30 minutes, three or four times a day. I would have missed the opportunity to pause and notice how beautiful the canal I live on is, or how unique and pleasant my neighbors are. Being in the cOMmUNITY is where I feel best, like I am really practicing yoga.

Openly speaking your mind can come with backlash. How do you handle criticism? I try to not speak unless I know exactly what I am talking about and I never say anything that I wouldn’t say to sOMeone out loud or in front of my NamaMama, no matter what it was. I have been picked on my entire life and know how to take criticism. Confidence may be perceived as cockiness, and passion may be perceived as aggression, but at the end of the day, I lay my head down knowing that I always cOMe frOM a place of LOVE. Period. As long as I continue to make love-based decisions in this lifetime, I’m cool with that and stand by what I say. Tell us about yoga hOMe! What can students expect from this facility? You can expect a custOMer-service-driven environment that will act like a yoga help desk for the yoga cOMmUNITY of South Florida. My studio may not be the one for you, but let us find the one that is! We have a proven track record of pointing practitioners in the right direction. We have a non-heated Yoga RoOM and a Hot Yoga RoOM heated with infrared and humidity infused. Our teachers will be the best of the best as yoga hOMe® will act as a talent agency with a cutting edge in performance arts and dance. More to cOMe on that … I can’t spoil everything for you just yet!

Will there be classes for advanced and beginner yogis? Yoga hOMe® will not be an “all-levels” Hot Yoga roOM. Say you walk into a hot yoga studio having not practiced yoga before. You take my class, think you’re dying (you’re actually cOMing alive), end up hating it and never want to cOMe back. Not at yoga hOMe®, my friends! Our over-qualified teachers will help students make solid decisions about staying in the non-heated yoga roOM or attempting the hot yoga roOM. Detailed instruction and modifications with slower-paced classes will always be found in our non-heated yoga classes. In the Hot roOM? GAME OM! The SoundOff™ Experience specifically is wireless headphone technology that we have invested in that lets each attendee control their own volume and tune in to up to three channels of audio from DJs, emcees and/or video presentations. So. Much. FUN! What would you tell someone who felt too self-conscious to come to a yoga class? I would start to share my own struggle. Seeing a scared, hairy, sweaty, little boy in the mirror instead of a strong, accOMplished, young man. I would remind them that each and every one of us cOMes frOM a place of struggle of sOMe sort and at the end of the day, we are all not so different. I like to #KeepYOGAweird and I can prove it! All you have to do is give us a try at yoga hOMe® of Pompano Beach and you’ll see for yourself! Yoga is for every BODY! Namaste! Palm Beach County Fitness Veteran Offers Virtual Personal Training Harnessing the Power of Skype and Cell Phone Photography

R

aphael Calzadilla has developed a unique virtual personal training program being used by individuals as far away as Oregon. The program can be adapted for clients of any age, including seniors. Here are five questions for Raphael.

What is Virtual Personal Training? Virtual personal training uses online communication and technology tools to maintain a high degree of contact with a client. Daily communication, guidance and encouragement are the foundations of the program. How does it work? After a thorough assessment which takes into consideration exercise habits, eating patterns, available exercise equipment, and stress levels, a personalized training program is designed based on the client’s specific goals. A trainer monitors their progress using Skype, email, text, nutrition tracking apps and online meal photo journaling. What are the advantages to Virtual Personal Training? Convenience, cost and unlimited access to a trainer. Individuals can do their workouts wherever they have access to exercise equipment, including at home. They can do customized workouts in a hotel room using fitness bands and body weight. Most virtual programs are half the cost of traditional personal training. Lastly, the program offers unlimited daily support which encourages accountability, leading to greater client motivation.

What makes one virtual training program better than another? An effective virtual training program should provide easy-tofollow workouts with written and video instruction that changes every 3-4 weeks. It should also offer a meal planning solution that fits into a client’s lifestyle. Daily communication is what sets the best virtual training programs apart from the rest. Sometimes just a quick text, email, FaceTime or phone call can do wonders to help someone stay on track. Who are the ideal candidates for virtual personal training? It is ideal for anyone who wants to lose weight, get fit, become stronger and have more energy. The virtual program will suit those who are comfortable with a non-traditional approach to their fitness solution. Instead of being limited to seeing a personal trainer in a gym twice a week, it’s perfect for those who appreciate daily communication and unlimited access to a trainer, no matter where they are. Raphael Calzadilla is a certified personal trainer who has been working with clients for more than 20 years and providing virtual training online for over a decade. At 60, he is a competitive bodybuilder who previously worked in the technology industry. For more about Raphael visit http://fitbyraphael.com

Dress For Success . . . . . . and Yoga by Stephanie Gadaleta

F

or most of us, what we wear to a yoga class is usually NSFW, unless you are in fact a yoga teacher for a living. Along with teaching yoga, I work a 9 to 5, Monday through Friday job with a daily commute to Downtown Fort Lauderdale. Often I feel as if I am barely making it to teach/take a class; never mind having the time to change clothes beforehand. Now, while I have mastered the art of changing from work clothes to yoga clothes in my tint-less nonSUV car at red lights, I am sure the carpools of kids complete with un-amused parents would prefer I refrain from the unintentional anatomy lessons. Heavens only knows what the red light cameras have caught... There is little in this life more comforting than throwing on your favorite yoga outfit, turning up a good jam and cruising to your next yoga class or workout extravaganza. So, what’s a yogi to do? Rarely would we ever consider wearing yoga clothes to the office or board meetings. But what if we could? Here’s how: 1. Opt for solid color leggings as opposed to bright, loud, or elaborate prints. 2. Layer a long, blousy tank or tee that

hits below the hips, and add a tailored blazer or oversized knit sweater to layer on top. (If you’re comfortable, you could wear a neutral sports bra with support instead of a bra.) 3. Leave the flip-flops in your yoga bag, and grab a pair of ankle booties, gladiator sandals, or a chic pair or pumps to finish up the outfit. 4. Don’t forget the facial cleansing wipes and hair tie to make the transition from office appropriate to relaxed yogi an easier one. Now, I am not suggesting that anyone begin sporting a crop and bum-revealing shorts in the cubicles every day. Just as we strive to find balance in our yoga, so too can we find equilibrium in how we get ourselves to our practice. Creating harmony between what we want to do (yoga) and what we have to do (work/life) truly is a balancing act, but it can be done.

Share-A-Haircut Program Hair Cuttery will be conducting its annual ShareA-Haircut program benefitting underprivileged children as they head back to school this year. From August 1-15, for every child up to age 18 who purchases a haircut at one of Hair Cuttery’s nearly 900 salons, one free haircut certificate will be donated to a disadvantaged child in the community. 2017 marks the 18th year of Share-A-Haircut, with Hair Cuttery’s most recent campaign donating more than 81,000 haircuts to survivors of domestic violence this past spring. The company has supported a range of local and national causes, including St. Baldrick’s Foundation, American Red Cross, The National Network to End Domestic Violence, American Cancer Society and Girls on the Run.

Boca Raton’s Curls Rock is completely redefining “curly” for girls by advocating the beauty of natural, healthy looking curly hair. At Curls Rock one doesn’t just get a hair cut, but also meets passionate professionals who are willing to hold your hand throughout the whole process of nurturing and pampering your curly hair! “Our mission here is to teach every curly girl that goes through the doors to love and embrace their curls” says Katrina Rodriguez, the Creative Director and the Head Stylist of Curls Rock. Curls Rock uses the Deva Cut technique to cut and style curly hair. This technique was pioneered by Lorraine Massey, a true curly hair maven based in New York City. The main difference from other techniques is that curls are cut and shaped while dry. Products used are all chosen individually for each type of curly hair and to lock in as much moisture as possible, since curly hair tends to be dryer then straight hair. www.curlsrockhair.com

TIPS to Look Your Best When Dressing Casually F

rom fitness conscious consumers to busy moms who are always on the go, casual athletic attire is becoming a socially acceptable and on-trend style. In fact, it’s so popular, it carries its own name: “athleisure.” It may sound like a piece of cake to dress in casual and relaxed clothing. However, avoiding a “just rolled out of bed look” is not so simple. If you find that comfy yoga pants or joggers are increasingly becoming a staple in your wardrobe, consider these tips to ensure you always look put together when sporting them. • The right shoe goes a long way: Forgo the traditional or “core” running shoe for this look. Such brands as Adidas, Converse, Nike, Skechers and Vans have introduced updates to their classic offerings. While still inspired by an athletic lifestyle, variations in color, height, patterns and textures accommodate the growing trend for casual wear. In addition to looking good, they are breathable and functional -- just in case you wanted to sneak in a light workout during the day! For example, the popular Adidas Baseline still comes in a classic white.

However, this year they introduced a version in peach, a fun and new spring color. • Get the family involved: Did you grow up loving your Chuck Taylors? The good news is that new athleisure wear is available as a full family offering, so that infants, tweens and teens can also enjoy comfortable, yet stylish, shoes. In response to this trend, family-friendly retailer Rack Room Shoes recently introduced The Athletic Shop, a shop-within-a-shop concept that highlights nationally recognized name brand products for those with an active lifestyle. • Polish off the look: Consider taking some extra time to do hair and makeup on the day you select a casual outfit from your closet. Or try pairing joggers and athleisure footwear with a nice handbag, statement scarf or leather jacket. This will help put the look together nicely. With all this in mind, the experts at Rack Room Shoes are focusing on comfortable, functional and stylish athleisure-inspired footwear. More information is available at rackroomshoes.com.

Family Yoga F

ancy downward dogging with Dad, or maybe a garudasana with Grandma? Kelly Kerr’s enthusiasm is infectious, as she talks about the newly-opened Family Yoga Zen Zone (FYZZ) in Delray Beach, FL. FYZZ provides a fun and healthy environment for kids and family to explore yoga, including a cheerful Kidz Room for play time. Today’s Yoga Magazine stopped by to find out what this familyowned, bright and airy studio has on offer.

What makes your studio different?

We are all about family. Child friendly, child geared, and we want parents to feel comfortable here, like it is a home away from home. FYZZ is a place parents can network; making and talking to friends. We have adultonly classes so kids can be in the kids’ room, playing. Most of our employees in the playroom are cleared by the school district and some are teachers. What are the benefits of families practicing yoga together?

Oh gosh, what aren’t the benefits? Parents doing yoga with their kids is such a positive bonding activity. Incorporating this practice within the home allows emotional regulation of stress for both parents and kids. When the whole family gets to participate, it becomes a lifestyle within a household. It becomes a morning ritual to incorporate into their everyday life. It is also a great way for kids to mentally prepare for tests. How did you come up with the idea of this type of studio?

When I was pregnant I went to prenatal yoga classes at beautiful studios, but the studios weren’t kid friendly. When I had my first child I would practice at home in my living room with him there, but I wished there was somewhere structured where he was amongst other kids, doing the same thing. If we as a society can bring yoga, mindfulness and breathing techniques to kids at a young age, then throughout their life they will be better equipped to deal with whatever life throws at them. Kids get to play, take a kids class and hang out. It helps children want to learn and participate. The only time we have kids cry is when their moms tell them it’s time to go and they have to leave the playroom. For more information on FYZZ, visit www.familyyogazenzone.com 1201 N. Simple Ways to Up-Cycle Wood Crates and Pallets

by Lynzy Ferris

by Julie Murphy

N

euroscience supports the benefits of flooding your brain with positive thoughts, so treat yourself to a threeminute break and feed your subconscious mind with a positive affirmation.

This Month’s Affirmation

I Am Unlimited Joy State the affirmation out loud or silently. Note your reaction to the words. Notice if situations or people come to mind that create the opposite effect; evoking feelings of sadness or pessimism, instead of joy. Imagine what your life would look like, how you would feel, if, “I am unlimited joy” were true. Think of one thing, or maybe more, that lifts your spirits and brings you happiness. Invite more of that element into your life.

The Practice: • Set a timer for 3 minutes (or longer, if you have time)

• Sit comfortably, your back straight but not rigid

• Close your eyes • Take three slow, smooth breaths, in and

out of the nose

• Slowly and deliberately, repeat the affirmation, again and again—silently or out loud: I am unlimited joy … I am unlimited joy … I am unlimited joy … • If you become distracted, simply notice you have become distracted, and then come back to repeating the affirmation When the timer goes off, release the affirmation and when you’re ready, slowly open your eyes. Come back tomorrow and repeat daily, without judgment or expectation—the key is in the repetition. You may also choose to say the affirmation in Sanskrit, using the mantra, “Ananda Hum”. Try the meditation several times a day and just before you go to sleep, to reinforce a mental pattern for joyful living. Namaste. cut out and keep

W

ould you believe me if I told you that the nifty wooden bookshelf in my living room was found trashed at the back of my local grocery store? They don’t sell household furniture, but they do display fruits and vegetables in side-turned wooden crates. When those crates have served their purpose, they are tossed out as trash. Wooden pallets used for shipping food and beverages can usually be found out back, along with old promotional displays. The rustic look is in, and what better way to implement that than by reclaiming some already-used wood and putting it to stylish, good use? “Upcycling” transforms by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new products for better environmental value. Get in touch with your inner tree hugger and save some dough by upcycling wooden pallets and crates in these five easy ways. 1. Bookshelf Stacking and screwing together wooden crates creates book storage space as well as a place for ornaments. Add a stain to the wood or a coat of primer and paint to create a more

finished look. Keep one of the crates decked out for your cat. 2. Coffee Table For an easy DIY, use four crates with the insides rotated out and screwed together. This will craftily make a coffee table that has storage space underneath for magazines or board games. 3. Herb Garden Mount pallets on the outdoor wall of your house. Or use eclectic wine crates to create big planter boxes! Line with landscaping material to retain moisture. 4. Accent Headboard Paint a pallet in the color of your choice and string LED lights around the edges. Use some stacked crates on either side of your bed for a complete DIY bedroom set. 5. Floating Shelf Need more storage in your bathroom? Add wooden pallets to the wall to store your immediate essentials such as face wash, moisturizer, essential oils, toothpaste and deodorant!

Grillin’ Time

Everything but the Bagel and Lox

Courtesy Whole Foods Market

Grilling intensifies the natural sweetness and flavor of most veggies and fruits. To achieve good results:

By Christine Ferris

• Use a light brushing of oil on vegetables and fruits to prevent sticking. A non-stick grate, grilling basket or foil packets lightly coated with oil can also be helpful.

Nothing like a good everything-bagel with lox or nova lox and cream cheese!

• Don’t peel vegetables before grilling — you’ll get more nutrients and enjoy a smokier flavor. Leave the husk on corn to act as a natural insulator, keeping the steam in and preventing the corn from drying out.

Here’s my healthier, everyday go to for that:

• Some veggies (including artichokes, beets, broccoli, carrots, parsnips, potatoes and winter squash) can be pre-cooked to shorten grilling time and ensure that the inside and outside cook evenly. To pre-cook: Steam or blanch until just barely tender. Pat dry, brush lightly with oil, then grill until completely tender and lightly browned. • Veggies like eggplant, fennel, onions, mushrooms, peppers, sweet potatoes, summer squash and tomatoes should be raw when placed on the grill. • Ideal grilling fruits are firm and barely ripe. Watermelon, pineapple, plums and peaches can all take the heat. Soak them in liquor or drizzle with honey before grilling for an added burst of flavor. • While mushrooms technically aren’t vegetables, they are often a go-to grilling item! Meaty portobellas are a great burger substitute, while button mushrooms make for tasty kabobs. • Cook all fruits and vegetables directly over moderately hot coals or use the indirect heat method. Rotate or move them to a cooler part of the grill during cooking as necessary to ensure that the outside isn’t cooking too quickly. For more visit www.wholefoodsmarket.com

Get Out and Enjoy a U-Pick Farm

S

ome farms allow visitors to hand-pick their own fresh fruits and vegetables. This form of direct marketing helps farmers save on labor and shipping costs while offering consumers the freshest produce at lower prices. Some of the more popular U-pick crops in Florida include blueberries, strawberries, grapes, peaches, citrus, sweet corn, and tomatoes. But there are also opportunities to pick more unusual items, everything from persimmons and chestnuts to star fruit and avocados. A trip to a local U-pick farm makes a fun family outing. You can enjoy fresh air and sunshine while choosing the best quality fruits and vegetables at the peak of ripeness. There are lots of benefits to picking your own. You’re reconnecting with nature, supporting your local economy, and getting to know your local farmers. A visit to a U-pick farm is a great learning opportunity for kids. They experience firsthand where their food comes from and how it grows; and studies show they’ll be

more likely to eat their fruits and vegetables if they have a hand in the harvest. Dress comfortably for your trip to the farm. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent, and wear sturdy shoes to protect your feet. Remember to bring your own containers for picking in case the farm does not provide them. Most farms are open on a seasonal basis. Keep in mind that weather conditions and customer demand can determine the supply of fruits and vegetables. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services maintains a list of U-pick farms throughout Florida. Here are two favorites found in South Palm Beach County. ith summer at peak heat now, it is of little surprise that acupuncturists say that summer is ruled by the element of Fire. Fire’s natural tendency is to flare outward and upward. It can warm and comfort us, but it can also get out of control if it’s not contained, scorching everything in its path. During the summer, the Fire inside of us mirrors the Fire outside, waking up our inner brightness so that we feel more energized, social, and lighter, both physically and mentally. However, just like a fire can spread in nature, it can also blaze out of control inside our bodies. If you think back to the last time you felt anger or anxiety, most likely you felt the heat of your inner fire rising to your face! When Fire blazes inside you, you end up with a sense of anxiety, physical discomfort, or anger. You might also notice other uncomfortable symptoms like insomnia, fever, irritability, restlessness, high blood pressure, constipation, headaches, shortness of breath, nose bleeds, and heat exhaustion. So, how can you beat the summer and keep your inner Fire in check? 1. Eat watermelons, which grow in the summer to help us cool down from the inside out. Another perk: watermelons are also great for digestive regularity and healthy skin! 2. Sweat responsibly! When your body temperature rises, sweat beads cool you off and leave your pores wide open. If you enter a chilly air-conditioned space or are outside in the wind you can end up with wind-cold invasion (aka you’ll more easily catch a cold). The area most vulnerable is the back of the neck, so if you find yourself in that situation, keep long hair down, wear your hood up, or even carry a light scarf with you. 3. Skip the ice. Refreshing though it may be, iced water works against your stomach’s natural Fire. If you tend towards digestive issues (constipation, gas, diarrhea), room temperature water is your friend! Bonus tip: try eating more steamed veggies and warm meals instead of salads and smoothies if you have tummy troubles. 4. Embrace JOMO, my acronym for “Joy of Missing Out”! Summer calendars fill up quickly, but know your limit and make time to relax and reset. If you’re feeling out of balance, especially during peak heat or as we move into fall (seasonal transitions are often difficult for the body), seek out your local acupuncturist. Acupuncturists balance the body and will support you in feeling your absolute best!

ART • CULTURE Kundalini Rising: Essays to Raise Your Consciousness

The Palm Beaches Tempt Cultural Tourists This Summer

by Dindy Yokel

T

he word Kundalini brings to mind yoga classes with lots of jumping around to kirtan music played on the harmonium. Start reading Kundalini Rising: Exploring the Energy of Awakening and it is clear that this is just a tiny part of something extraordinary—a search for the ultimate state of being. Continuing to learn and expand the mind is one of the things I love best about yoga and reading is an excellent vehicle for this path. Writers’ unique experiences open the possibility for one’s own experience and breathe new life into traditions that are thousands of years old but so relevant and much needed into today’s chaotic world. Contributors to this compendium that demystifies an ancient spiritual practice include medical professionals, a host of PhDs, yoga and meditation professionals and more; with different views, neurological research and the history of Kundalini. Those who study yoga know that Samadhi, the meditative state of consciousness or final limb of the yoga sutras, is the ultimate goal and Kundalini, is one part of the energetic journey. But what is it, how to achieve it, where to start—Kundalini Rising is a superb guide along the way. In the introduction, Tami Simon says it best, “Here is the book I wish I’d had twenty-five years ago. Kundalini Rising comprises twenty-four essays on different aspects of the kundalini experience, including what transpersonal psychologists have to say about kundalini; understanding the yogic brain from a scientific perspective; understanding the relationship between kundalini energy and sexual energy; yogic exercises to catalyze the kundalini process; the role that kundalini awakening plays in the unfolding of our highest human potential; and more.” If this book piques your interest in Kundalini, Sounds True recently published Essential Kundalini Yoga: An Invitation to Radiant Health, Unconditional Love, and the Awakening of your Energetic Potential by Karena Virginia & Dharm Khalsa. Definitely worth checking out as you continue your path to peace and happiness.
