‘EU cannot enlarge further without Lisbon Treaty’

Iran says its missiles can hit Israeli and US bases. Speculation that Israel could bomb Iran has mounted since a big Israeli air drill last month. US leaders have not ruled out military options if diplomacy fails to end the nuclear row contýnued from page 1 US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on a visit to the former Soviet republic of Georgia that Washington was sending a message to Iran that it would defend American interests and those of its allies. "We take very, very strongly our obligation to help our allies defend themselves and no one should be confused about that," Rice said after meeting Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.

Wednesday's tests rattled global oil markets, pushing up the price of oil. Iranian state TV and radio said the new missile tests took place during the night into Thursday."Deep in the Persian Gulf waters, the launch of different types of ground-tosea, surface-to-surface, sea-to-air and the powerful launch of the Hout missile successfully took place," state radio said without giving further details of the missiles. Lebanese army redeploys in Tripoli Security officials say Lebanese soldiers are fanning out in the northern city of Tripoli a day after sectarian clashes killed five people and wounded nearly 60. Gunmen have withdrawn and army reinforcements are taking up positions between rival neighborhoods of Sunni Muslim government supporters and Alawite followers of the Hezbullah-led opposition. TV footage shows bullet holes in apartment buildings, shops shuttered and twisted metal and debris littering streets and alleys. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to media. The death toll from Wednesday's fighting rose overnight when one man died, bringing the total dead to five, with 58 wounded. Beirut AP

Hout was a torpedo. "Iran's Revolutionary Guards test more missiles in Persian Gulf," the Press TV reported in a brief headline. The reports followed remarks on Wednesday night by Guards air force commander Hossein Salami, who had told state television that a "night missile maneuver" was taking place. But he gave no details at the time. Press TV said the new missile tests were part of an ongoing military maneuver. Tehran Reuters

The main militant group in Nigeria's oil-producing Niger Delta said on Thursday it was abandoning a cease-fire, in protest at a British offer to help tackle lawlessness in the region. Prime Minister Gordon Brown said on Wednesday that Britain was ready to help the world's eighth biggest oil exporter deal with unrest in the delta, which has cut Nigeria's output by a fifth and contributed to a rise in global oil prices. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), which first launched attacks on the oil industry in early 2006, said Britain was backing an "illegal government" and that it would end a cease-fire at midnight (2300 GMT) on Saturday. "MEND wishes to sound a stern warning to the British prime minister over his recent statement offering to provide military support to the illegal government of (President) Umaru Yar'Adua," the group said in an e-mailed statement. "Should Gordon Brown make good his threat to support this criminality for the sake of oil, UK citizens and interests in Nigeria will suffer the consequences," it said. MEND, had declared a unilateral cease-fire on June 24. Abuja Reuters

cut emissions of greenhouse gases. "We are the last generation that can prevent catastrophe, the very last," Sarkozy told the chamber, appealing for EU governments to approve a package of energy measures to reduce emission by the end of the year. "The world is condemned if we don't take a decision right away," he warned. With an agreement, he said the EU could take a strong united position into global talks on climate change next year. He warned countries such as the United States, China and India that the EU would consider trade barriers if they did not impose environmental restrictions on their companies that matched those in the European package. A wildfire raging in the Sierra Nevada foothills turned residents into refugees as firefighters hoped to keep the blaze from crossing a river and igniting a nearby Californian town. Thousands spent another night away from home after fire officials ordered evacuations on Tuesday ahead of wind-whipped flames bearing down on the town of Paradise for the second time in just a few weeks. By early Thursday, the lightning-sparked wildfire had destroyed at least 50 homes, mostly in the rural community of Concow, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) north of Sacramento. The fire threatens nearly 4,000 homes in nearby Paradise. A separate wildfire destroyed 74 homes in Paradise last month. Firefighters were making their stand along the Feather River on the banks opposite Paradise, which is at risk if the winds shift and the blaze jumps the river. "We have low humidity, high temps and then the wind, so the conditions are still red flag," meaning the most extreme fire danger, said Mike Mohler, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. "If the weather cooperates, we have a good chance. But it all depends on what Mother Nature gives us the next few days." The hot, dry weather continued on Thursday. The blaze is one of about 40 lightning-sparked wildfires that have charred 49,000 acres (19,830 hectares) in this northern California region during the past two weeks. For Clay and Nancy Henphill, running from raging wildfires is becoming routine. They were forced to evacuate their home for the second time in just over two weeks. Oroville, Calif. AP

nied trying to "blackmail" the Irish, but his insistence that Croatia and other candidates for EU membership will be prevented from joining adds to pressure on Dublin to call a second referendum on the treaty before elections to the European Parliament in a year's time. The Lisbon Treaty was signed in 2007 after years of painstaking negotiations. It aims also to raise the EU's international profile. It has been voted in by parliaments in 21 of the 27 EU nations, but rejected by the only one to hold a referendum; it must be approved by all before it can come into force. Sarkozy told the parliament the top priority of France's six-month presidency of the EU will be tackling climate change, and warned that action was needed fast to

French President Nicolas Sarkozy insisted on Thursday that the European Union will not be able to take in new members without the treaty that Irish voters rejected last month. "If we want further enlargement, and I want it, we need new institutions," Sarkozy told the European Parliament, claiming that an EU with more than its current 27 members cannot function without changes to the way it is run. Sarkozy said he will go to Ireland on July 21 to seek a solution, but warned there would be no renegotiation of the Lisbon Treaty -- designed to smooth out and speed up the bloc's decision-making -- which was voted down by the Irish referendum. A fire at a Soviet-era military base in Uzbekistan spread to an ammunitions depot on Thursday, igniting a series of powerful explosions that killed three people and injured 21 others, the Uzbek government said. A helicopter unit in Kagan, a central Uzbekistan mining town, caught fire about 11 p.m. (1800GMT) on Wednesday night, a spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry said. Soldiers tried to put out the blaze, but could not keep it from reaching artillery shells, which began to explode, he said. The Russia-based Ferghana.ru Web site, which covers Central Asia, cited residents as saying the explosions began about three hours after the fire started and continued until morning, with the biggest blasts even shattering windows in Bukhara, 12 kilometers (7 miles) away. "We were woken up in the middle of the night and everybody came out onto the street," a local woman told The Associated Press by telephone. She asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals. Uzbek state television and news agencies did not report the explosions for more than 12 hours after the fire first broke out. Information is tightly controlled in the Central Asian nation. Reports differed widely over the extent of damage. The Web site said a train station, a hospital and more than 20 homes were destroyed, yet an official from the Emergency Situations Ministry later denied that report. Kagan has since been sealed off by authorities, the web site reported. Telephone lines are down and the train to the capital, Tashkent, was canceled. Tashkent AP

China says it is concerned about Tehran tensions China expressed concern and urged restraint in the standoff over Iran's nuclear program on Thursday, while avoiding direct condemnation of Tehran for test-firing missiles that alarmed Western powers. Iran, the world's fourth largest oil producer, says its uranium enrichment program is only for peaceful nuclear power. But Washington and other Western powers fear Tehran wants the means to make nuclear weapons. As a major oil customer of Iran and veto-wielding permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has become a focus of this diplomatic standoff. But its reaction to the missile tests was guarded and directed not only at Tehran. "We express our concern about these developments," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told a news conference when asked about Iran's missile tests. "The situation in the Middle East is now complicated and sensitive," and we hope that measures taken by all sides

will be to the benefit of regional peace and stability. Liu also welcomed the prospect of fresh talks on Tehran's nuclear program in coming days. Iran said on Wednesday that it expected talks with European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana, acting as envoy for six world powers, including China, which have offered incentives for Tehran to halt its nuclear program. Liu said Iran had told Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi that it was willing to engage in "constructive negotiations" with the EU and the six powers. "We hope that all sides can adhere to seeking a solution to the Iran nuclear issue through peaceful negotiations," Liu said. Iran is energy-hungry China's third biggest supplier of imported crude oil, well behind Saudi Arabia and Angola. In the first five months of this year, Iran shipped 9.6 million tons of crude to China, a rise of 11.8 percent on the same period last year, according to Chinese customs statistics. Beijing Reuters

Korea nuke talks to focus on rules for verifying facilities Negotiators resumed talks Thursday on North Korea's nuclear disarmament, with hopes of laying out a program for what could be a months-long effort to verify the communist state's declaration of its atomic materials. The latest round of six-nation talks comes after North Korea handed over the much-delayed list late last month, then blew up a cooling tower for its main nuclear reactor to demonstrate its commitment. "I want to emphasize that all of us ... gathered here share the same strategic objectives," China's nuclear envoy Wu Dawei said at the start of the talks. "The ultimate objective is the realization of a nuclear-free Korean peninsula." Wu said steps forward, including North Korea's recent declaration, meant the several rounds of discussions were starting to pay off. "All these successes have led us to believe that if we work together, stick to the guidelines and concepts, honor our commitments, the strategic goals will undoubtedly be realized," he said. US Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill told reporters earlier that after agreeing on the verification process, the verification itself "will take several weeks or even months, actually." Some basic agreements on the process include interviews with North Korean officials and site visits, Hill said. "There are a lot of details that need to be fleshed out." In response to North Korea's declaration, the United States announced it would remove the North from a list of state sponsors of terrorism and relax some economic sanctions against the communist nation. The exchanges paved the way for the resumption of the six-nation meetings in Beijing after a nine-month lull. The talks also include South Korea, Japan and Russia. The nuclear standoff began in late 2002 when the US accused the North of seeking to secretly enrich uranium in violation of a 1994 disarmament deal. The architect of Pakistan's nuclear program, Abdul Qadeer Khan, told The Associated Press last week that he recalled uranium enrichment equipment being sent from Pakistan to North Korea in 2000. The United States had previously insisted that North Korea detail its alleged uranium enrichment program as well as nuclear cooperation with Syria in the declaration. But Washington has apparently backed down from that demand, drawing criticism from American conservatives who say the Bush administration is going too far to strike a deal with the North before leaving office next year. North Korea's nuclear declaration, which was delivered six months later than the country promised, is said to only give the overall figure for how much plutonium was produced at its main Yongbyon nuclear complex -- but no details of bombs that may have been made. Experts believe the North has produced as much as 110 pounds (50 kilograms) of weapons-grade plutonium, enough for up to 10 nuclear bombs. Beijing AP

Turkey’s ýnevýtable lýe detector test After an extended debate that turned into a row, the indictment in the "Ergenekon terrorist organization" case is to be presented to the court today, if it hasn't been already. Reportedly some 2,000 pages long, the indictment will attempt to prove that a criminal network has been plotting to overthrow the constitutional order through acts of terror, mass provocation and murder. The additional indictment against the top generals will be presented later. More arrests are possible, since the prosecutors have not indicated that the case will be limited to some 60-plus people. Given the content of the "founding document" of Ergenekon (partly visible in the leaked interrogation material), one easily gets the impression that Turkey has finally reached "the moment of truth," a stage at which it will have to confront its own type of Gladio, with tentacles spread all over the institutions that influence society. But, contrary to the relatively easy confrontation and resolution seen with similar clandestine organizations in countries like Belgium and Italy immediately after the Cold War, this one here will not be simple. The evil tree has deep roots; its branches have penetrated all the floors of the building of the state; it has caused severe damage in the media and academia. The unresolved crimes are numerous and the network it has managed to build has high stakes in not being exposed. It has blood and pain, misery and tragedies on its

record. It is hard to know how many people have been accomplices, although levels of complicity may vary. Thus the resistance, black-outs, cover-ups, misinformation and sheer lies. The deliberately escalated cacophony about the case in segments of the Turkish press should not lead anyone to question its historic nature: For the first time in Turkey's history, a civilian court will try four-star generals for plotting a coup. It is as simple as that. Let me summarize where the actors stand at this utterly critical juncture. The arrests of top generals have caused anger within the army, while the high command so far seems willing to cooperate with the law. It is natural that such an unprecedented development that "touches" the upper echelons of the hermetic armed forces also shakes and rattles it. High command is fully aware of the emotions in the lower ranks and looks determined to control them. It is speculated

insistently that Ergenekon has members among the high-level officers on duty, so a number of them may be dismissed in the National Security Council (MGK) that meets in early August, eventually paving the way for new indictments. Some sources even indicate that there may be some cases for "internal affairs" investigations. It is apparent that Ergenekon prosecutors will attempt to prove the link between the organization and a number of "political murders" and terrorist attacks. But, more importantly, they will also try to prove the chain of plans to overthrow the elected government in the years between 2003 and 2007. In the latter, as already suggested, there will be key witnesses. One of them has already indicated that he may "see when the time comes." This is retired Gen. Hilmi Özkök, a former chief of General Staff. Özkök, in a series of interviews, made it rather clear that there indeed was a plot for a coup amongst his top generals. The other key witness will be a former navy commander, retired Adm. Özden Örnek, whose diaries tell us all of the plot in rich detail. If these two are called in as witnesses, Turkey might hear a shocking account of the danger it has been facing. For the Justice and Development Party (AKP), it has so far proven to be a case of endurance. Its leadership stands seemingly fearless -- perhaps having learned its lessons from the infamous Þemdinli case -- and wants the investigation to bring

Stealýng Turkey’s role When Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak came to Turkey, he said that Ankara could have a positive effect on Damascus for resuming Israeli-Syrian relations, which have been severed for so long. According to Barak, "Turkey may definitely have a positive effect due to the depth of its relations with Syria." While Barak was making this statement, some international news agencies ran a piece saying Israel's most important ally in the region was "secular" Turkey but that relations between the two countries were bruised when Israel launched an attack on a Syrian facility last year. It later surfaced that Turkey had acted as a mediator between Syria and Israel, but still, by doing a political maneuver, Barak -about Turkey's possible role on Israel-Palestine issues -said, "I'm not sure if it could play a role." The meaning of this statement is that Israel doesn't want Turkey to get involved in the Palestine issue, the mother of all problems; however, it says that it can play an important role between Israel and Syria because of its "deep relations" with Syria. Syrian-Israeli relations are as important for Israel as they are for Barak because -- as those who closely follow the developments in Israel know -- he commenced peace talks with Syria and Palestine before his term in office as prime minister expired in 2001. According to Israeli analysts, Barak is more hopeful for peace with Syria than with Palestine. Israel has some demands from Syria, and it prefers conveying these demands to the officials in Damascus over Turkey. What should we understand from all this? It's beneficial to note right away that one of the important reasons behind Turkey's recently developed close ties with the countries in the region, and particularly with Syria, is the Israeli factor. Turkey took important steps in Pakistan's establishment of diplomatic relation with Israel. Yet Syria stands as a far more significant issue. Syria was mentioned as part of the "Axis of Evil" declared by the United States after Sept. 11, 2001 and has thus been threatened many times by the US. In turn, Syria, as it read this perception of threat accurately, launched into efforts to develop its ties with Turkey as much as possible to avoid a disaster similar to the one incurred by Iraq. Of course, this is a very important indicator that earns both prestige and advantage for Turkey. However, what was whispered from ear to ear behind Ankara's closed doors was that Turkey was "slightly" pressuring Syria. According to the claims, Turkey was imposing on Syria the idea of coming to terms with Israel and that, at times it reached levels that disturbed Damascus. I wrote about this in a previous column (See www.dunyabulteni.net, Feb. 16, 2008). Now it is being dwelt on by the Israeli daily Haaretz. According to the paper, Ankara wants relations between the two countries to move on to the next level. This is the idea imposed on Syria by Turkish officials: Indirect talks benefit nobody anymore. We should acknowledge that it is a difficult situation for Syria because, according to President Bashar Assad, it is necessary to wait for the US presidential elections in November in order to get the maximum positive results from such talks. So long as George W. Bush is the US president, nothing can develop in favor of Syria. "Coming to terms" with Syria -- namely, neutralizing it and pushing it out of the equations in regard to the Middle East and Palestinian issues -- is of vital importance, because establishing peace in the Middle East is impossible without Syria. Let's reiterate the famed formula: In the Middle East, starting a war is impossible without Egypt, and establishing peace is impossible without Syria. Following the Lebanon defeat, Israel was seriously intimidated. In order that it may attack Lebanon again, Hezbollah should be depleted and, to that end, of course, Syria should be neutralized. And right at that point, Israeli officials state that Turkey can play a mediating role between Syria and Israel, while holding that they don't believe it would be able to play any efficient role in the Palestine problem. OK, Turkey's foremost misgiving has been exposed: It fears that France will steal its role.

the truth to daylight. If successful, this may be the most meaningful legacy the AKP leaves behind when it is shut down. The Republican People's Party's (CHP) fierce resistance to the Ergenekon case and its furious attempts to discredit it may be easy to explain. If CHP leader Deniz Baykal does not fear a coup due to the case, then the only explanation may be linked with his engagement to cover up the possible involvement of his party or people he aims to protect. Has the CHP been involved? We do not know, but will surely find out. The media has drawn the short straw. Having been known to commit "big sins" in bad faith, some segments look desperately ill at ease. Several large dailies acted, as we know through "confessions" later on, as volunteers in the hands of the military command during the Feb. 28, 1997, process, manipulating the masses with fabricated news stories, silencing dissident voices and spreading fear. The same pattern is even more widespread now, giving rise to the suspicions that proprietors, editors and columnists have been involved in Ergenekon's activities -- or that, although they knew, they did nothing to inform the public about it. In a sense, one could say Turkey's history is a history of lies. This inherent habit has now reached a thick wall as the common citizens of this country show only one direction: democracy. The moment of truth is, therefore, welcome.

The punches keep coming, fast and furious. The lethal attack that killed three young policemen, as well as three of the assailants, in front the US Consulate General in Ýstanbul on Wednesday has created further confusion in an already highly charged domestic atmosphere. Turkey is reeling from this latest blow. In the coming days, more details should emerge that will shed some light on the motive behind the attack, its timing and the unlikely choice of target, the impenetrable, fortress-like consulate building in Yeniköy. The attackers killed police officers, but it seems they never really stood a chance of entering the complex or damage it. Violence, particularly at this delicate moment when the ruling party is threatened with closure and the Ergenekon investigation suggests that men trusted to defend the country were in fact plotting to destabilize it, can foster a sense of cynicism or simply fatalism. "This is it. We have really become a Middle Eastern country, jumping from one crisis to the next," a Turkish friend lamented when she heard the news of the bloody attack. The remarkable resilience that Turks have always displayed in the face of difficulties, whether faced with coups, earthquakes, financial meltdown or political crises, has in the past been a double-edged sword. Thanks to its ability to rebound rapidly, Turkey recovered from devastating events much faster than anticipated. On the other hand, the determination to return to "business as usual" even in the worst of circumstances has also allowed the country to muddle along, never touching bottom, without ever addressing some of its deeper issues.

Resilience should not become an acceptance that violent events and endless turmoil are an inescapable part of daily life. It is too early to tell if the Yeniköy attack is in any way linked to the ongoing internal battle or if it is, as early police statements suggest, an al-Qaeda-inspired terrorist attack similar to those that have caused havoc in recent years in Turkey and other countries. Although the attack feeds into a sense of helplessness that many feel these days, it should not mask more hopeful developments that are taking place in this country. What is already clear is that Turks are more attuned to manipulation attempts than ever in the past, and are no longer prepared to take everything at face value. The debates and the soul-searching that have been generated by recent events may have fueled polarization in the society, but they are also forcing it to address some unpleasant realities. The apparent impasse carries the potential for change. Positive developments in the international arena too, if properly assessed, could make a productive contribution to this process. Take for instance, the invitation extended by Armenia to President Abdullah Gül to attend a football match in Yerevan in September and President Serzh Sarksyan's stated wish to build ties with the Turkish government and secure the opening of the border. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan's visit to Baghdad could also tip the balance in favor of a constructive dialogue between Ankara and the Iraqi Kurds. And last but certainly not least, the rapprochement between the Cypriot leaders could positively affect one of the more contentious issues in Turkey's European Union relations. One cannot talk of silver lining when turmoil involves loss of life, but crises do bring new openings. Eradicating terrorist attacks entirely is not realistic, but reducing their impact is possible. The stakes are high in the ongoing struggle: If Turkey succeeds in building a more open and inclusive political framework, it could break a long cycle of instability and prevent violence from being used to fuel existing tensions.

The most recent arrests made as part of the preparation of the indictment for the Ergenekon file was actually a delayed step because the possibility of associating the concerned actors -retired generals, businessmen and journalists -- with a probable coup attempt has already been publicized owing to their actions and statements. In other words, they have never concealed their ideological stance and political intentions. Of course, this alone may not be a criminal element, and this is the probable reason for the delay in taking action to proceed with arrests. This latest "move" of Prosecutor Zekeriya Öz was made with reference to the Ümraniye case. That is, it is asserted that the people who will likely be arrested have a connection to weaponry found in Ümraniye and assassination plans. This is a very important development because it is not that easy to find evidence that their plans were actually put into effect, while it appears that the so-called Ergenekon network has made its mind up on the necessity of staging a coup and decisions on how to stage it. In such a broad ideological network, individual actions of many may be consistent with the general stance and tendencies while they may not imply the existence of a chain of command and order. However, if a connection is established between this network, with access to heavy weaponry, and incidents like the murder of Hrant Dink (a Turkish-Armenian journalist assassinated in January 2007), it will be possible to prove that attempts were made to implement the coup plans. The arrest of a retired military officer like Þener Eruygur, who has so far enjoyed immunity, will change the quality and characteristic of the Ergenekon case. It should be noted that Eruygur is an influential figure who made at least two coup plans to topple the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) administration during his term in office as Gendarmerie commander and sought social legitimacy for a probable coup by mobilizing the media. Therefore, it is possible to say that the circle surrounding the coup-lovers is closing in. In response to this, it has been observed that the coup supporters resort to two methods. First, they seek to ensure that the closure process is completed without any compromises; in other words, they seek to make sure that the AK Party is closed down. The (Supreme Court of Appeals) chief prosecutor's oral statement -- which excludes not only law but also logic and reason -- may express a state of panic because in his recent presentation, the chief prosecutor not only presented constitutional amendments made to lift a ban on wearing headscarves at universities as evidence for backwardness but also relied on an argument implying that those who wear a headscarf should be denied normal citizenship rights. In short, the AK Party closure case is disconnected from not only the law but also basic human values. The justification for the closure of this party is sought in ideological discrimination, and Kemalism is openly presented as "just" discrimination. The closure case not being influential enough to offset the Ergenekon file has apparently increased the panic. The impossibility of the statist media to extend open support for those seeking to stage a coup reinforces this deadlock. For this reason, a phony "symmetry" argument that compares the closure case and Ergenekon is created. Arguments are raised to prove that both sides politicized the judiciary in an attempt to become "neutral" and the readers are invited to become apolitical. The actual argument is the allegation that the AK Party paid attention to Ergenekon in response to the closure case. However, the Ergenekon file was opened before the filing of the closure case. If a countermove should be sought, we have to argue that this closure case was submitted to render the Ergenekon investigation ineffective and therefore it was actually part of the coup process. In addition, we are dealing here with those who are trying to close a party that did not commit any crime and a network which for years sponsored murders to accomplish a coup. Perhaps we have to talk about "illegitimate solidarity" -- and not symmetry. There are currently particular attempts to make Turkey enter a chaotic atmosphere. Those who fail to generate the chaos needed by the coups now seek to make the people ambivalent and create chaos in their minds, with effective assistance by the media. If they succeed, the coup will achieve its goals and Turkey will be subjected to becoming an underdeveloped and embarrassing country. At that time, we will no longer be bothered to go back, analyze and ask why we are like this because at that point, immorality will stand right before us in vivid detail.

The abandoned bus where Christopher McCandless starved to death in 1992 near Healy. by a college graduate who turned his back on his wealthy family for his wanderings. The local chamber of commerce has already received a few dozen e-mails from would-be visitors wanting to track the unmonitored route taken by McCandless to the 1940s-era bus, used for decades as a shelter for other backcountry travelers. Former chamber president Neal Laugman warns visitors about a terrain -- about 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of Anchorage - with no cell phone service, unpredictable weather, clouds of mosquitoes and the rag-

ing Teklanika River, whose swollen banks prevented McCandless from seeking help. “I don’t want people to go out there and die. It’s that simple,” Laugman said. The EarthSong Lodge is among the last developments along the Stampede Road, which eventually gives way to an old mining trail that traverses the Savage and Teklanika rivers. As the weather warms, lodge owner Jon Nierenberg sees hikers walking past the lodge every couple days, starting the 22-mile (35-kilometer) trek to the bus. Most of the travelers are young

men. “I don’t look at them as nut jobs,” he said. “I can easily see where they’re coming from. But I think they’re sort of idealizing an idea rather than a person,” said Nierenberg. Alexander, who plans to make the trek with a friend or two in late August, considers himself a bit of a wanderer with a passion for the untamed West. Leaving his urban surroundings as much as possible is crucial for him, said Alexander, a salesman for a Washington, D.C., documentary production company. Alexander said he’ll be much better prepared than McCandless and will visit other parts of Alaska. “We’re not coming up just to do this little pilgrimage,” he said. “This is one little element. We’re not completely nuts.” Ridership is significantly higher in the “backcountry safari” offered by Alaska Travel Adventures, which this summer is noting the “Into the Wild” connection. Also up are the backpackers tramping past a cooking camp where safari riders stop for a wilderness meal, said manager Nick Prosser. Prosser, who has read “Into the Wild” and seen the movie, plans to hike out to the bus himself before he heads back home to Celina, Texas, at the end of his seasonal job. “I just would like to go for the adventure,” he said. “I’m up here. I might as well go.” Healy AP

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL

Ron Alexander has long been intrigued with the true story of a young idealist who met his death in Alaska’s unyielding wilderness in 1992. The film adaptation of the book “Into the Wild” only cemented the mystique for Alexander and others heading to Alaska this summer, hoping to retrace the last steps of Christopher McCandless along the Stampede Road near Denali National Park. Alexander and his fellow travelers want, in particular, to see the abandoned bus where the 24-year-old Virginian starved to death after more than three months alone in the harsh landscape. “That’s sort of the heart of the story,” said Alexander, 44, of Virginia. “It’s almost like a Jim Morrison grave site, where people just want to go see it.” This is exactly what residents in the interior town of Healy, 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of the bus, feared with the release last fall of the movie adapted from Jon Krakauer’s best-seller of the same name. They envisioned hordes of copycats making dangerous pilgrimages in the footsteps of a character often seen as a spiritual visionary rather than an ill-prepared misfit, as many Alaskans view McCandless. People from all over the world have journeyed to the rusted bus over the years. But there are signs this could be a boom year for those captivated

the development of Flemish political independence. It is considered one of the main reasons that Dutch is the language spoken in Flanders today. On this day in 1989, Laurence Kerr Olivier (b. 1907), the greatest actor of his time, died. Olivier was an Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA and fourtime Emmy-winning English actor, director and producer. Olivier’s academy acknowledgments are considerable -- 14 Oscar nominations, with two wins for Best Actor and Best Picture for the 1948 film “Hamlet,” and two honorary awards including a statuette and certificate. In 1999 the American Film Institute named Olivier among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time, ranking him 14th on the list. By Kerim Balcý

Today is the Flemish Community Holiday among the Dutch-speaking people of Belgium. This day commemorates the Battle of Courtrai (The Battle of the Golden Spurs) on July 11, 1302 -- an operation to suppress the Flemish resistance by the French king who ruled over Flanders at that time. However, the well-organized Flemish militia crushed the French knights. The battle was one of a series during the 14th century that showed knights could be defeated by disciplined and well-equipped infantry. It was also a landmark in

Today is St. Benedict’s Day in Western Christianity. The feast commemorates Catholic Christian recognition of the father of the Benedictine Order, the first order of the Western Church’s monastic tradition. The rule that St. Benedict of Nursia (480-543) established became the norm for monastic living throughout Europe. In 1964, acknowledging the works of Benedictine monks in the evangelization and civilization of so many European countries in the Middle Ages, Pope Paul VI proclaimed Benedict the patron saint of all Europe. Today is World Population Day. This day was established by the UN Population Fund in order to raise awareness of how international family planning can help to slow population growth and save

Dolphins are our oldest friend in the sea. You can see dolphins swimming and playing in warm seas all over the world. Dolphins are popular at theme parks, too. There are many stories about dolphins. Sometimes, dolphins help ships in trouble. They also help people who are drowning. Dolphins are about 8-9 feet (245-275 cm) long. They wiegh 400-500 pounds (180-225 kg). Dolphins are not fish. They are mammals. They live in large groups. Dolphins have strong feelings and great memories. They are also very smart. Dolphins communicate by sonar. A dolphin’s sonar is much better than man-made sonar. Dolphins “whistle,” “click,” and make sonar “pictures” to communicate with each other. Today, scientists study dolphins and their sonar. The military is also interested in dolphins. People often swim with dolphins. When they swim with dolphins, people feel very happy. Sometimes, dolphins can help people who are sick. They help people with their sonar.

Pizza, Pizza, Pizza! Being that my mother is completely Italian, you might think that I grew up savoring dinners like Leek Risotto as the main course with Antipasto Panzanello as an appetizer. Maybe some Italian Taramusu for dessert. Unfortunately, this never happened. My mother was a working gal, and the best Italian dish I ever got was spaghetti with butter. I don’t recollect ever having pizza until I was a teenager. There weren’t any parlors, and the only pizza we ever had was from a mix in a box (this progressed or regressed into toaster pizzas). I remember my Uncle Vince telling me one time in the late 60s, “If you ever want to make a quick million, open up a pizza parlor.” Boy, was he right. The pizza business boomed in the 70s. Today, pizza might just be the most popular food on the planet. You may think it’s been around forever. However, as I stated before, it’s fairly new to the American stomachs which adore it. It has become a food staple. Each American now puts away about 23 pounds of pizza a year. About 3 bil-

lion pizzas are sold each year in the U.S. The thing I have always loved about pizza is you can put whatever topping on it that you want. You can always create a pizza to suit yourself. If you don’t like cheese, then leave it off. Not too keen on pepperoni or sausage? Don’t put them on your pizza. In its simplest form, pizza consists of bread, tomato sauce and cheese. Some exotic pizzas might include artichokes, olives and goat cheese or marinated chicken with pesto. You might think that all styles of pizza originated from Italy. This isn’t true. There is New York pizza with its thin crust sprinkled with cheese. You have Greek pizza which is baked in oil. Toppings may include spinach and feta cheese. There is also California pizza with its ultra-thin crust and in-season vegetables. The number one topping in the U.S. is pepperoni followed by extra cheese, sausage and mushrooms. For lunch today, I had a slice of cheese pizza at Sbarro Pizza. It’s too bad Turks can’t eat real pepperoni. You don’t know what you are missing.

8. Dolphins communicate with their noses. _____

9. People like swimming with dolphins. _____

5. What kind of work do you do? a. I work every day.

b. I'm a piano teacher.

Turkish drivers and walkers don’t know what a straight line is- they prefer to meander. As an American, I also go to bed earlier than most people do in this country. This is the source of my biggest dilemma. Most of my neighbors are still up when I turn off my bedroom light. The TV next door is loud. So is the girl practicing the piano downstairs. Of course, the feral cats and dogs are always boisterous in the evening. So, I suffer from insomnia occasionally. As an anti-pill man, I don’t want to swallow anything that will make me drowsy. Drinking 3 glasses of wine would put me to sleep, but I wouldn’t feel too well the next morning. With no

available solutions, I decided to see the famous sleep specialist, Dr. Jane Black. This is the advice she gave me. - Decide if you have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or both. If you can’t fall asleep, you have insomnia. If you wake up regularly, you have sleep maintenance insomnia. Insomnia may be impacted by depression, restless leg syndrome etc. Take a look at the things going on in your waking life that could be causing you problems at night. - Use your daytime activities in a

more beneficial way. Take a walk during lunch. Try some yoga at your desk. Avoid eating and drinking thinks that may affect your sleep. Don’t eat spicy food for dinner. Don’t drink a lot of water before going to bed. Caffeine, sugar and alcohol are all sleep thieves. If you must eat before bed, choose something healthy such as fruit, oatmeal or yogurt. - Prepare yourself for bed. Read, stretch, meditate or listen to music. Letting go of the day in these ways will help you release the daytime anxieties, and tell your brain and body it is time to mellow out. - Create a bedroom that will seduce you to sleep. A bedroom is not the proper place for a desk, filing cabinets, mountains of laundry and children’s toys. Keep your bedroom cool and dark. Make sure your pillows and bedding are comfortable. Remove the television. If it must stay, keep it in an armoire. For more information, you can contact Dr. Jane Black at Down road No:15/54 Sweet dreams!
