‘Kyoto Protocol increases public awareness globally' The Global Conference on Global Warming, held this week at Ýstanbul's Dedeman Hotel, wrapped up on Thursday with a declaration suggesting that Turkey's ratification of the Kyoto Protocol will increase public awareness of global warming and its effects. Conference Chairman Professor Ýbrahim Dinçer, a professor at the University of Ontario's Institute of Technology, said more than 200 academics from 48 countries attended the event and that a total of 177 presentations were made during the four-day conference. Reading the declaration during a press conference at the event, Dinçer said ratifying the Kyoto Protocol will increase public awareness of global warming, adding that Turkey's annual carbon dioxide emission per person us three tons according to local sources and five tons according to international sources. The world average is five tons per person. Dinçer said this number is 20 tons in the US, 22 tons in Germany and 10 tons in Japan, adding that if necessary measures are not taken Turkey's carbon dioxide emission per person would exceed the world average as the country is growing rapidly. Emphasizing the importance of education regarding climate change, Dinçer said, "We need to use all natural resources economically in order to protect the ecological balance." He explained that everybody should go on a natural resources "diet" to prevent global warming. Dinçer stressed that there should be a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources in all industries, adding that all of Turkey's energy sources should be considered before producing electricity from nuclear power plants. Dinçer also noted that Turkey would need 15-20 years to begin producing electricity from nuclear power plants even though the contract was signed this year. The conference chairman also said they will organize the next conference on global warming in July 2009 in Ýstanbul. Answering questions from journalists, Dinçer said nuclear energy is accepted as a part of the solution for global warming, but added that this should be analyzed very carefully for Turkey. "There is no pill without adverse effects. Similarly, there is no energy source without adverse effects. There is a risk factor in nuclear energy, but this danger is almost zero thanks to advanced technologies." Ýstanbul Today's Zaman with wires

Last OKS examination sees 97 students top national class The results of the national High School Entrance Examination (OKS) taken by thousands of eighth graders competing to for places in the country's top high schools were announced yesterday by Minister of Education Hüseyin Çelik. This year's OKS, which was administered for the last time before a switch to a new exam system, has spotlighted the 97 top performers who received the top score of 500. However, 31,221 students did not even pass the minimum threshold to be able to submit a list of the schools of their choice. Çelik noted that 11 of these students, who scored zero, did not answer a single question correctly on the exam. Ýstanbul had 18 of the top students, followed by Ankara with 10 and Ýzmir with six. Furthermore, 52 of the 97 students placing highest on the examination were reported to have graduated from private schools. Çelik announced the southwestern province of Burdur, the central Anatolian province of Eskiþehir and the Thracian province of Edirne had produced top scorers on the Turkish-Math (TM) and Math-Science (MF) points base. The most unsuccessful province, on the other hand, was the southeastern province of Hakkari, followed by the eastern Anatolian province of Aðrý and the southeastern province of Þýrnak. The students who performed satisfactorily on the exam will now submit their school preferences between July 11 and 18. The candidates have the right to list up to 20 schools of their choice. The first placement results are to be announced on July 25. There will be two more placement periods for students to fill the remaining spots. Ýstanbul Today's Zaman

ÖDP leader seeks parliamentary investigation into coup plots Freedom and Solidarity Party (ÖDP) leader and deputy Ufuk Uras has stated that he will present a motion to Parliament next Wednesday for the launch of an investigation into two failed coup attempts in Turkey. Uras was supposed to present the said motion this week after he gathered the required number of signatures from deputies, but later decided to wait for another week to gather greater support from deputies for the motion. He started a signature campaign in May in Parliament with the aim of open-

ing an investigation into the failed military coups known as Ayýþýðý (moonlight) and Sarýkýz (blond girl). “I will present the motion next Wednesday. I hope the shroud of mist over the failed coup attempts will be dissipated,” said Uras, speaking to Today’s Zaman. The coup attempts were revealed last year in April by weekly newsmagazine Nokta, which published excerpts from a diary it said belonged to former Navy Commander Adm. Özden Örnek. The diary contained details of coup attempts dating back to 2004. An investigation was launched following the allegation not into Örnek and his

coup plans, but into Nokta Editor-in-Chief Alper Görmüþ. The newsweekly was shut down several weeks after a police raid on its office. Uras’ initiative to launch an investigation into coup attempts has already received the support of 20 Democratic Society Party (DTP) deputies and Hakkari independent deputy Hamit Geylani. Grand Unity Party (BBP) leader Muhsin Yazýcýoðlu pledged earlier this week to sign the motion. “The motion has not reached me yet. I will sign it when it comes,” he said. Deputies from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), the main opposition Republican

People’s Party (CHP), the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the Democratic Left Party (DSP) refused to sign the motion. AK Party deputies said the figures cited in the failed coup plans were already either taken into custody or jailed as part of the Ergenekon operation -an investigation into an illegal ultranationalist gang with links to the state and military -- and that it is necessary to wait for the completion of the trial process. Uras stated that he will hold a press conference when he presents the motion to Parliament and will call on political parties to stand up for democracy.

contýnued from page 1 The assassination of Gen. Özkök in February 2004 was among the group’s plans, but the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) warned Ankara of the plans on Feb. 3, 2004, Yeni Aktüel claims. The routes used by Özkök in his daily activities were changed after the warning, and security measures were greatly intensified. The newsweekly also reported that after Özkök became aware of the assassination plan, he had gendarmerie headquarters meetings between the involved generals secretly recorded on video. Yeni Aktüel claims Özkök called Eruygur into his office at the General Staff headquarters and showed him a recording of a meeting Eruygur had organized to plan a coup. Eruygur was reportedly shocked to see that his “secret” meeting had been taped and reacted by saying, “My headquarters betrayed me!” Özkök then reportedly reminded Eruygur that he had committed a crime punishable by law. All high-ranking officials in the Gendarmerie Forces were assigned to positions outside the capital after this incident. “He was walking like he was drunk and bare-

ly managed to reach his official car. Everybody was very curious about what had happened in Özkök’s room during this long meeting. Eruygur and his friends had been expecting Özkök to resign, so what else could have been happened inside that shocked Eruygur so deeply?” Yeni Aktüel quoted a witness of the incident as saying. Speaking to the Milliyet daily on Wednesday, Özkök did not deny claims about the coup attempts that happened during his commandership. Last year the former chief of General Staff commented: “Everything will be revealed when the right time comes. For instance, countries’ secret archives are revealed after a certain amount of time passes. Everything may be revealed when the time comes, either by me or other people.” Another claim was put forth by journalist Yasemin Çongar in her column in the Taraf daily yesterday. According to her, the National Intelligence Organization (MÝT) has long been aware of the existence of the Ergenekon organization, senior members of which are currently under arrest on charges of plotting a coup. Ergenekon probe statement this Monday Ýstanbul Deputy Chief Prosecutor Turan Çolakkadý told reporters yesterday that examination of the 2,500-page indictment against a neo-nationalist gang is not yet been complete but that a news conference on the investigation is planned for July 14. The existence of the Ergenekon criminal network, which allegedly plotted to overthrow the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government, was revealed after police seized hand grenades, TNT explosives and fuses in a shanty house in Ýstanbul on June 12, 2007. The Ýstanbul Chief Prosecutor’s Office subsequently launched an investigation. Eighty-five suspects currently fall within the scope of the investigation, of which 48, including retired Gen. US Consulate attack echoes Gürses’ phone recordings A deadly armed attack on the US Consulate General in Ýstanbul on Wednesday was an uncomfortable reminder for some of the words of an academic currently police custody as part of an investigation into a shadowy neo-nationalist gang. As part of the investigation into the Ergenekon gang -- accused of plotting to overthrow the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government -police gained the authority to tap phone conversations of those on the organization’s membership list. Academic Emin Gürses’ phones were also tapped, and in a police recording said, “If they cast me into prison, our guys attack the US Consulate.” In the telephone conversation using a phone registered under Emin Gürses the name of “Erman Dur” on Jan. 23 at 5:49 p.m., Gürses said: “Do not forget this. Send a message to Þener Eruygur Pasha [the detained chairman of the Atatürkist Thought Association (ADD) and a former gendarmerie commander]. A file is being prepared against him by the police. I am saying this on the phone so that they can hear it.” In the continuation of the same telephone conversation, Gürses also said: “Today they called me and asked whether they took me into prison. But I said if they take me in, the consulates of the US and Israel will be blown up by our guys. And I said, ‘Let them tap my telephone conversations, let them record everything.’” On Feb. 26 Gürses was detained and sent to prison as part of the Ergenekon probe. In the inquiry, the police asked Gürses what his words meant and how he knew a file on Eruygur had been prepared. Gürses replied: “It is nothing but hearsay. I did not learn this from either the police or a public official.” Upon being asked the identity of “our guys,” Gürses answered: “I may have said the US and Israel if we had talked about the agenda and their roles in it. There is no one who could be labeled as ‘our guys.’” Ýstanbul Today’s Zaman

Study: Men happier than women in marriages Contrary to popular belief, men feel they are more likely to share their thoughts and feelings with their spouses than women are, the results of a study conducted by instructors at Ankara’s Hacettepe University family and consumer sciences department shows. The study, conducted by Professor Günsel Terzioðlu and Associate Professor Arzu Þener, polled 413 faculty couples and was published in the most recent issue of the state-owned Family and Society [Aile ve Toplum] magazine. According to the study, while the men tend to be satisfied with their marriages, their spouses complain of a lack of family harmony. According to the study, men are more satisfied with the communication between spouses in a

marriage than women are; 39.5 percent of men think they “always” share their ideas and feelings with their wives, while 42.9 percent of men say they “sometimes” do. However for women, 38 percent say they “always” share their ideas and feelings with their husbands, while just 36 percent say they “sometimes” do. Twenty-four percent of the female study subjects said they are never satisfied with the rate at which they share their ideas and feelings with their spouses, but this rate was only 18 percent for men. The study also found that sharing ideas and feelings in a relationship is more important to women than to men, so women are “always” happy after sharing feelings, and men just “sometimes.” Marriage satisfaction increases after 21st year

The satisfaction rate for couples married for five years is higher than that of couples married more than five years. The satisfaction rate decreases gradually after the fifth year of marriage due to increase in economic and psychosocial responsibilities. Other factors causing this problem are the lack of time the couples can spare for each other and expansion of the families after children are born. This problematic period, however, ends after the 21st year of marriage, and the rate of satisfaction of the marriages rises again after the 21st year of marriage. The reasons for this are identified as a decrease in responsibilities related to children, having a more stable family and an increase of tolerance for others in the family. Another reason is that goals and attitudes of couples become parallel in time.

The satisfaction rate for those who married at early ages (between 15 and 19) is lower than that of couples who tied the knot later in life. As the marriage age increases, up to 35 years, this rate peaks; however after the age of 35 the satisfaction rate decreases gradually. The reason for this decrease is attributed to the following: Individuals’ characters are already shaped at this age, so it is more difficult for couples marrying later in life to develop a common life philosophy together. According to the study results, marriage satisfaction also increases in line with rising income. The level of education is also influential in marriage satisfaction; more educated couples are more likely to be satisfied with their marriages. Ýstanbul Today’s Zaman with wires

Bilkent Unýversýty mosque to feature church, synagogue ALÝ ÜNAL

What makes the prayer complex project distinctive is that it has been planned as the official protocol mosque of Ankara. The two rooms inside the mosque will be set aside for Christian and Jewish students and lecturers from Bilkent, Hacettepe and METU Ankara will soon have another version of the Garden of Religions, inaugurated in December 2004 by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan in the Belek district of Antalya. A mosque complex is being constructed on the Bilkent University campus, and it will also feature a church and a synagogue. Expected to be Turkey’s new protocol mosque for official visits, the complex will see completion in September. To be named the Doðramacýzade Mosque after the founder and honorary rector of the university, Professor Ýhsan Doðramacý, the complex will be a little different from its peer in Antalya, as the church and synagogue will be inside the mosque, forming two separate sections. The one in Belek has a garden with three separate places of worship. However, the project has one challenge to face: Before it is completed it needs to be endorsed by the Directorate of Religious Affairs, which must make an interpretation in line with Islamic jurisprudence about the permissibility of followers of three different religions worshipping in the same place. A number of officials from the directorate told Today’s Zaman that they knew about the construction of the complex but had no idea about the two separate rooms to be used inside the mosque as a church and a synagogue. In their appeal for the directorate’s approval, officials from the Professor Ýhsan Doðramacý Foundation requested that they themselves be permitted to appoint an imam to the mosque, but they also said that they were not averse to the idea of the directorate appointing a qualified and accomplished imam to such an important mosque. The mosque’s plan was drawn up upon the instructions of Doðramacý, the son of a Turkoman family from Kirkuk. Its architecture is described as “very authentic and republican style” by Doðramacý. Having bought the building plot shortly before construction began, Doðramacý is covering all the building expenses himself. Paying close attention to every detail of construction, he is

What makes the project distinctive is that it has been planned as the official protocol mosque of Ankara. The two rooms inside the mosque will be set aside for Christian and Jewish students and lecturers from the Bilkent, Hacettepe and Middle East Technical universities. The building plot is 12,000 square meters. The mosque will sit on a 4,500-square-meter portion, and the rest of the plot will be set aside for green areas. The mosque building will also have conference and exhibition halls for conferences and panel discussions on religious and ethical issues. In addition to the women’s section, the mosque will have two benches at the back for those with health problems that prevent them from kneeling and prostrating in prayer. There will be a moving walkway for

the elderly and a separate entrance and exit for official guests to enter and leave with ease. There will also be a large parking lot.

Project based on Islamic tolerance Houses of worship of the three Abrahamic religions sharing a common space is not actually a first in the history of Muslim Turks. The first example to be cited would be Ýstanbul’s Dar’ul-ajaza charity home, which for centuries had separate places for the followers of all three religions to worship. With the idea of allowing all people, regardless of faith, to benefit from these charitable institutions in mind, the Ottoman state had a worship room built for all three of the religions in this charitable place, along with innumerous others. Similar places that combined places of worship of all three religions existed throughout the

Ottoman lands, particularly in Ýstanbul’s Ortaköy district and Hatay, or Antioch. When the first Garden of Religions was opened in Antalya in 2004 by Prime Minister Erdoðan, the inaugural ceremony was attended by Ali Bardakoðlu, the head of the Directorate of Religious Affairs, Alphonse Sammut, a representative of the Turkish Catholic churches, Dasiteos Aragnostopoulos, a representative of the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, Ýshak Haleva, chief rabbi of the Turkish Jewish congregation and the Armenian patriarch, Mesrob II Mutafyan. The Kuþadasý Businessmen’s Association (KUSÝAD) also launched a similar project after witnessing foreign visitors’ positive reactions to the two previous projects. The Kutadasý Garden of Religions is being built on an 8,500-square-meter plot. The site will have conference and exhibition halls, too.

Journalist Perihan Maðden was presented with the Freedom of Thought and Expression Award by the Association of Turkish Publishers yesterday.

Journalist Perihan Maðden of the Radikal daily was presented with the Freedom of Thought and Expression award by the Association of Turkish Publishers in a ceremony held at the Taxim Hill Hotel on July 10. Saying that she does not follow the court cases filed against her, Maðden said: “The message meant to be given to me is that ‘we [people who file cases against her] do not want you to write those things.’ They want me to live feeling threatened and pressured.” Interpreting the cases filed against her as a “threat” and “blackmail,” Maðden claimed that someone wanted to silence her, adding, “I try to write my column without thinking about [court],” she said. “I won’t stop writing my columns. It is horrible seeing prosecutors more than seeing one’s own family and friends. But that has become a part of my life. I won’t let them poison my

private life with my daughter,” Maðden said. Ragýp Zarakolu, head of the association’s committee on publishing freedom, also delivered a speech at the ceremony, highlighting the thousands of cases opened under the infamous Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK), which penalizes those who “insult Turkishness,” has reached into thousands. “This problem affects not only journalists, but also citizens, directly.” Claiming the article was ideological, Zarakolu stressed: “It is not enough to judge coup attempts. Illegal coups of the past should also be judged. That would be a bigger step in making Turkey more democratic.” A recent amendment to Article 301 appears to be bearing fruit in practice, as the Justice Ministry has prevented a number of 301-related cases from being opened since the change was made. At the ceremony, information was presented on a report concerning the freedom to publish in Turkey in the first half of 2008. The presentation highlighted

that the Turkish judiciary was growing more political, threatening democracy. “Turkey has difficulty in applying democracy. … In the first half of 2008, inquiries and suits were filed against 47 books by 38 writers published by 22 publishing houses. Acquittal and nolle prosequi decisions were made for seven books. Courts handed sentences down for 17 books. ... Five books were recalled even without waiting for a court decision. And a case concerning one book was sent back to court as a result of an amendment of Article 301,” according to the presentation. The presentation also indicated that the problems on freedom of thought and expression in book publishing had decreased for the first half of 2008. It was stated that the amendment to Article 301 will enable the cases filed up to now to be suspended. The association also recognized publisher Songül Özkan as well as writer Vural Okur for their courage in pursuing freedom of thought and expression.

10 PKK terrorists killed in Southeast Ten terrorists from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and a village guard were killed in conflicts with Turkish security forces in Turkey’s Southeast yesterday, military sources have reported. A Turkish soldier was also injured in the clashes, which occurred on Mt. Kato in Þýrnak. Warplanes and helicopters taking off from Batman and Diyarbakýr assisted the security forces during the operation, which aimed to stop a group of terrorists from infiltrating into Turkey at the northern Iraqi border. A funeral was held yesterday for Selim Baygýn, the slain village guard, at the 23rd Gendarmerie Border Command. Baygýn was buried in Þýrnak’s Kumçatý district. The PKK has been fighting for self-rule in southeastern Turkey since 1984 in a conflict that has killed tens of thousands. PKK terrorists abducted three German climbers on Mt. Ararat in eastern Turkey on Tuesday, saying they would not release them until Berlin put an end to a crackdown on the terrorist group’s activities in Germany. The German government called for the immediate and unconditional release of its kidnapped nationals. Turkey, the US the European Union and a majority of the international community consider the PKK a terrorist organization. Earlier in the year, Turkish warplanes carried out several strikes on PKK targets across the border in northern Iraq, where thousands of PKK terrorists are based. In February Turkish ground troops also crossed the border for an eight-day incursion to hunt down PKK terrorists. Ýstanbul Today’s Zaman

Drug-related cases on the rise in Turkey Drug-related crimes have boomed in Turkey in recent years, according to data from the Justice Ministry, doubling over the last three years. The ministry is requesting that all drug-related legislation be collected under one legal code of narcotics crimes. Another suggestion is to protect informants in drug cases as witnesses are protected. Earlier this week, a parliamentary commission on the fight against drugs, headed by Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Adana deputy Necdet Ünüvar, met with officials from the Justice Ministry. The officials announced statistics concerning narcotics crimes. According to this data, 10,138 drug-related criminal cases were filed in 2003 while this number increased to 22,328 in 2006. In 2004 there had been 12,737 cases filed and in 2005 there had been 15,629 cases. While 17,219 people stood trial on drug-related charges in 2003, in 2006 this number rose to 36,272. Presenting a report to parliamentary committee, bureaucrats offered suggestions about measures that could reduce these numbers. Some of the officials’ suggestions were as follows: Creating one legal code that includes all legislation concerning drug crimes; installing X-ray equipment at all Customs stations; banning the sale of paint thinner for those under the age of 18; creating special courts for narcotics crimes; determining criminal penalties on the basis of drug weight in grams. Former minister Þener resigns from AK Party Former Deputy Prime Minister Abdüllatif Þener announced his resignation from the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) after a meeting of the AK Party Central Decision and Administration Board (MKYK) yesterday. In attendance at the MKYK gathering for 15 minutes, Þener told journalists outside that he had presented his resignation petition to the board. Upon a question by a journalist on the atmosphere of the meeting, Þener said: “Resignation is, in fact, not a matter of conflict but a matter of civilized attitude. The prime minister kindly offered me a speech and I gave my goodbye speech before my friends. He delivered his wishes of the best of luck and we said goodbye.” Þener further commented: “There was a mutually polite approach. Politics should be polite. Kind politics is significant in the establishment of social and intra-institutional harmony and the ability of the system to produce solutions.” Þener opted not to run for a seat in Parliament in the general elections held on July 22, 2007, choosing instead to return to academia at the Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges University. An American life is worth $1 million less than it was 5 years ago statistics; some comes from opinion surveys. According to the EPA, people should not think of the number as a price tag on a life. The EPA made the changes in two steps. First, in 2004, the agency cut the estimated value of a life by 8 percent. Then, in a rule governing train and boat air pollution this May, the agency took away the normal adjustment for one year's inflation. Between the two changes, the value of a life fell 11 percent, based on today's dollar. EPA officials say the adjustment was not significant and was based on better economic studies. The reduction reflects consumer preferences, said Al McGartland, director of EPA's office of policy, economics and innovation. "It's our best estimate of what consumers are willing to pay to reduce similar risks to their own lives," McGartland said. But EPA's cut "doesn't make sense," said Vanderbilt University economist Kip Viscusi. EPA partly based its reduction on his work. "As people become more affluent, the value of statistical lives go up as well. It has to." Viscusi also said no study has shown that Americans are less willing to pay to reduce risks. At the same time that EPA was trimming the value of life, the Department of

administration of changing the value to avoid tougher rules, which the EPA denies. "It appears that they're cooking the books in regards to the value of life," said S. William Becker, executive director of the National Association of Clean Air Agencies, which represents state and local air pollution regulators. "Those decisions are literally a matter of life and death." Dan Esty, a senior EPA policy official in the administration of President George W. Bush's father, George H.W. Bush, and now director of the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy, said: "It's hard to imagine that it has other than a political motivation." Agency officials say they were just following what the science told them. The EPA figure is not based on people's earning capacity, or their potential contributions to society, or how much they are loved and needed by their friends and family, some of the factors used in insurance claims and wrongful-death lawsuits. Instead, economists calculate the value based on what people are willing to pay to avoid certain risks, and on how much extra employers pay their workers to take on additional risks. Most of the data are drawn from payroll

It is not just the US dollar that is losing value. A government agency has decided that an American life is not worth what it used to be. The "value of a statistical life" is $6.9 million, the Environmental Protection Agency reckoned in May -- a drop of almost $1 million from just five years ago. The Associated Press discovered the change after a review of cost-benefit analyses over more than a dozen years. Though it may seem like a harmless bureaucratic recalculation, the devaluation has real consequences. When drawing up regulations, government agencies put a value on human life, then weigh the costs versus the lifesaving benefits of a proposed rule. The less a life is worth to the government, the less the need for a regulation, such as tighter restrictions on pollution. Consider, for example, a hypothetical regulation that costs $18 billion to enforce but will prevent 2,500 deaths. At $7.8 million per person (the old figure), the lifesaving benefits outweigh the costs. But at $6.9 million per person, the rule costs more than the lives it saves, so it may not be adopted. Some environmentalists accuse the Bush

Transportation twice raised its life value figure. But its number is still lower than the EPA's. The environmental agency traditionally has placed the highest value of life in government and still does, despite efforts by administrations to bring uniformity to that figure among all agencies. Not all of EPA uses the reduced value. The agency's water division never adopted the change and in 2006 used $8.7 million in current dollars. Viscusi wrote one of those big studies, coming up with a value of $8.8 million in current dollars. The other study put the number between $2 million and $3.3 million. The co-author of that study, Laura Taylor of North Carolina State University, said her figure was lower because it emphasized differences in pay for various risky jobs, not just risky industries as a whole. EPA took portions of each study and essentially split the difference -- a decision two of the agency's advisory boards faulted or questioned. "This sort of number-crunching is basically numerology," said Granger Morgan, chairman of EPA's Science Advisory Board and an engineering and public policy professor at Carnegie Mellon University. "This is not a scientific issue." Washington AP

Oýl hýts record above $147 as supply fears ýntensýfy Oil leapt $5 to a new record high near $147 a barrel on Friday, spurred by growing worries of threats to supplies from Iran and Nigeria and the possibility of a strike by Brazilian oil workers next week. US crude was $4.85 at $146.50 a barrel by 9:15 a.m. EDT, off highs of $146.90, taking gains in just two sessions to over $10. It rose $5.60 or 4 percent a barrel on Thursday in a late burst of buying activity. London Brent crude was up $4.74 at $146.77 a barrel. Leading the oil complex was ICE gas oil futures which climbed to a new record high of $1,336.75 a tonne amid strong demand for diesel and aviation fuel. Analysts said the threat of supply disruptions provided the bullish backdrop, as the demand picture was unlikely to change much until after the Beijing Olympics. "We continue to believe that the downside risk to oil prices remains relatively low until the non-OECD countries begin to show greater price and income elasticity response than has been evident to date," Deutsche Bank analyst Adam Sieminski said in a note. Oil, which had been on the retreat for much of the week, reversed course on Thursday as fears of supply disruptions from potential hot spots, OPEC members Iran and Nigeria, resurfaced. A spate of missile tests by Iran, the world's fourth-largest oil exporter, in the last two days against a backdrop of rising tensions with Israel and the United States has left the oil markets worried. Iran has threatened to strike back at Tel Aviv as well as US interests in a key oil shipping route if it is attacked over its nuclear programme, which Israel and the West fears is aimed at making nuclear weapons. The United States said it was ready to defend its allies. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, the main militant group in Nigeria's oil-producing region, said it was abandoning a ceasefire to protest against a British offer to help

‘World economy between recession and inflation’ The world economy remains stuck between the ice of recession and the fire of inflation, IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said on Friday. Strauss-Kahn, addressing a conference in Ukraine's Black Sea resort of Yalta, said the world financial market crisis was largely over, though its consequences would be felt for some time to come. Emerging market economies, he said, were experiencing good growth, though inflation, linked to high oil and food prices, remained a serious problem. "The biggest part of the crisis is probably behind us," Strauss-Kahn said. "Some parts could be still in front of us. The economic consequences of the crisis are obviously in front of us." He described the world response to the crisis as broadly adequate. The central banks collaborated well together and finally they solved the question that avoided a crisis. But conditions in the world economy remained troubling. "No one can say that the world economy is at a good temperature. We are just between the ice of recession and the fire of inflation," he said. Joint inflation and turmoil on financial markets, he said, amounted to "the first crisis of the 21st century" with the problem originating in the United States. "It was the strongest economy and it was at the top of the pyramid of power," he said. "What happened now is that the pyramid is a bit upside down. It is no longer a pyramid of risk." But emerging market economies were coping well, he said. The good news is after decades of stop-and-go cycles emerging economies are really emerging, he said, citing strong economic growth not only in India and China but in other regions, like west Africa. Inflation, however, remained a huge problem. Yalta Reuters

tackle lawlessness in the region. Rebel attacks on oil infrastructure in Nigeria, the world's eighthbiggest exporter, have also been partly responsible for the nearly 50 percent rise in prices this year. Workers at Brazil's Petrobras threatened to launch a five-day strike next week that would affect all 42 Campos basin offshore platforms, which account for more than 80 percent of daily oil output of around 1.8 million barrels. Oil has continued rising despite efforts by top exporter Saudi Arabia to raise production to its highest rate in three decades in an effort to tame oil prices. Qatar Oil Minister Abdullah alAttiyah told Reuters on Friday that he saw no demand for the additional crude that Saudi Arabia had pledged to pump. London Reuters

News Corp's Rupert Murdoch said it was very unlikely his company would be involved in any Yahoo Inc. transaction and said Yahoo and Microsoft would not end up with any deal. Asked whether he thought Yahoo would end up in Microsoft Corp's hands, he said, "There won't be a deal. There's bad personal feelings." Microsoft offered to buy Yahoo earlier this year for $47.5 billion, but withdrew its offer in May after feeling frustrated over discussions. "In six months, (Microsoft) will walk away," Murdoch said at the annual Allen & Co media and technology moguls confab. News Corp has reportedly been on the sidelines of recent discussions involving Yahoo. Shortly after Microsoft offered to take over Yahoo, News Corp held talks with Yahoo to combine its popular MySpace Internet social network with Yahoo and separately discussed a possible deal with Microsoft to take over Yahoo. Murdoch said one of Yahoo's biggest investors Capital Research, whose portfolio manager and legendary media insider Gordon Crawford publicly chastised Yahoo for failing to secure a Microsoft deal, would have gladly settled for a buyout at $33 per share. Stocks, dollar slammed by Fannie, Freddie fears Knight Equity Markets in Jersey City, New Jersey. Investors' initial reaction was to view Paulson's statement as an indication that a bailout of the two companies -- pillars of the US property market and economy -- was not imminent but still possible. Wall Street investors reacted as if the bailout would effectively wipe out much of the common stock of the private companies set up to finance home ownership and holding over $5 trillion in montage assets. Moreover investors feared the impact of a protracted financial crisis on the economy, the markets and on demand for US debt globally. New York Reuters

Global stocks fell sharply and the dollar slid on Friday, weighed down by growing credit fears as the two largest US mortgage finance companies plunged on concerns over a report that the government is considering taking them over. Stocks extended losses after US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said at mid-morning that his department's chief aim is to back Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in their "current form." The bottom line is that we're in the middle of a financial Tsunami. "This is a storm the likes of which this country hasn't seen," said Peter Kenny, managing director at

Google Inc. backs Yahoo in its effort to stave off an unsolicited takeover by Microsoft Corp. because an independent Yahoo will increase competition in the Internet search and advertising markets, Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said Thursday. "We absolutely support the decision that Yahoo made" in rejecting the Microsoft overture, Schmidt said at the annual Allen & Co. media summit at this Idaho resort. He made the comments during an hourlong interview with reporters. Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were also present. "There is no question in our view that an independent Yahoo is better," Schmidt said. It "will provide more competition in search and other advertising markets, in particular in display advertising," he said. Google is the leading seller of Internet ads, but most of its revenue comes from paid search ads, which appear next to the results of an Internet search using Google. Yahoo, which is stronger in display ads, rejected in May a $47.5 billion offer from the world's largest software maker. Schmidt would not say whether the informal offer -- originally made in January for $31 per share, but later increased to $33 per share -- fairly valued Yahoo, but said there is no way to know what the actual bid would ultimately be. ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian’ ELÝF NESÝBE ÖZBUDAK ÝSTANBUL

The movie "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," which began filming in February 2007 in New Zealand, is by no means a children's movie, although it is often assumed to be so. On the contrary, although Narnia, which we were introduced to in a fantastic setting shown in the first movie of the series, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," carries on the same tradition in the second movie, the latter differs in terms of the chain of events and the formation of the characters. The film, an adaptation from literature just like Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, is named after a book of the same name by author C.S. Lewis. Accused of proselytizing Christianity because of religious and mythological references in the first movie, C.S. Lewis' work is likely to be the topic of such arguments with the second movie as well. So it is a good idea to start with the first film to understand "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian." In "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," the Pevensie siblings (Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy), whose father went to war, enter a wardrobe full of fur coats to hide while in the house of a professor. The wardrobe, however, opens to a country called

Narnia where they meet speaking animals, the White Witch, fauns and centaurs. Running away from the war, the Pevensie children finally find themselves the saviors of the country, where the White Witch has brought an endless winter. The main issue in the story, wrought by personal conflicts and betrayals, is the struggle between the good led by Aslan (the eponymous lion) and the bad led by the White Witch. Because the winter does not end and Christmas does not arrive, the rebirth of Jesus is made impossible. Aslan, in fact, symbolizes Jesus Christ. This much we can understand from the scene in which Aslan comes back to life after being executed, sacrificing himself for Edmund. The enchanting effect of Turkish delight and the lion's name being Aslan (Turkish for lion) shows that a sense of Orientalism was intended, in addition to the tale's mythological and religious underpinnings. Let us get back to "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," adapted by Emmy award-winning writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The Pevensies, who had difficulty returning to their ordinary lives at school after being kings and queens in Narnia, return to Narnia through a metro station. While only one year later for the children, some 1,300 years have passed in Narnia. This may be a reference to the

Seven Sleepers (seven young men who fell asleep in a cave and woke up after a great deal of time had passed), taking the notion of the passage of time as a point of departure. Now Telmarines dominate the whole of Narnia under King Miraz (Sergio Castellito). The queen's giving birth to a boy endangers the life of the king's nephew, Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes). He decides to call the former kings and queens - the Pevensie siblings -- by using an ancient magical horn his mentor gave him, telling him to use it if he is in dire need of help. All the Old Narnians unite under the leadership of Prince Caspian and rise up against the Telmarines. The story, however, does not succumb to simple logic that suggests the battle between the armies will end after some time and good will prevail. On the contrary, it embodies several minor and major conflicts: Caspian vs. Peter Pevensie, Telmarines vs. the good, Caspian vs. uncle Miraz, Miraz vs. the politician and the White Witch vs. Caspian. The maturity of the characters and the story place the "Chronicles of Narnia" far from being solely a children's fantasy film. This is one reason why there are more war scenes than in the first movie. Several mythological and religious elements, such as speaking animals, walking trees, centaurs, dwarfs, fauns and Susan as a fighter (a ref-

erence to the Amazons, a nation of female warriors in Greek mythology), run throughout the movie. That Aslan is only seen by the most innocent and sensitive child, Lucy, also gives the message that a holy entity, i.e., Jesus, can only be seen by eyes which have pure belief. The most glaring reference to religion in the movie is seen in a scene where the Telmarine army is drowned in a river. The scene reminds us of the drowning of Pharaoh and his soldiers in the Nile, yet another example why the movie cannot be watched superficially. The stories, also to be found in other religions, are presented in the movie from the point of view of Christianity. With the motto "Everything You Know is about to Change Forever," the movie was directed by Andrew Adamson, famous for codirecting "Shrek." With a say in the screenplay, the director preferred to develop the Reepicheep and Trufflehunter characters instead of a couple of characters in the original novel, using twice as much CGI. The filming of the second movie was completed in New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovenia. The third movie of the series, planned to be directed by English director Michael Apted, is to be released next year. Peter and Susan Pevensie will not feature in "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader."

The Pevensie siblings return to Narnia in "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," the second film in the franchise, adapted to the big screen from C.S. Lewis’ novel of the same name. The film, directed by Andrew Adamson and starring Ben Barnes, Liam Neeson, Tilda Swinton and William Moseley in its title roles, opened yesterday in movie theaters across Turkey.

‘Meet Dave’ Dave Ming Chang (Eddie Murphy), newly arrived in New York City, may be the ultimate fish out of water. There's something about him that's not quite right -- for starters, he seems remarkably out of place and uncomfortable in his own body. And for good reason: "Dave" is not a man at all, but a ship made in the image of its miniature-sized captain. So let's meet Dave. He's 40-something, pleasant looking and nattily dressed, even if his attire -- an all-white suit, black tie and a neat black handkerchief tucked in his pocket -harkens back to the disco-centric '70s. But beyond his odd apparel, there's something not quite right about Dave. He's definitely not from the neighborhood. Even the way he walks is odd; as he makes his way through the streets of New York, one of his legs shoots out way too far with each step, like he's not comfortable in his own body. Inside "Dave" is a crew of well-trained miniature people -- a world within a world -- that feverishly attempts to direct Dave's every action and conversation. In each section of Dave's "body," a skilled crewperson, sporting an insignia depicting a specific part of Dave's anatomy, mans a high-tech console controlling Dave's movements. But Dave's crew, under the direction of the Captain from whom Dave takes his appearance, is experiencing a steep learning curve. When Dave attempts his first-ever sip of water, a tremendous wave of water rushes down, drenching everyone inside. When Dave tries on some clothing, a shirt becomes a cotton beast bent on smothering him. When he goes in for a simple medical exam, the metallic Dave must battle formidable magnetic forces from an MRI. And a banquet of processed meat tubes he learns are called "hot dogs," leads to an explosive situation inside a men's room. As Dave -- that is, those inside Dave -- slowly navigates his way through these physical challenges, they begin to experience something with even more profound effects. A glimmer of emotion sweeps over the crew, which hails from a place that discourages emotion and individuality. Dave is changing -- from the inside-out, and from the outside-in. Directed by: Brian Robbins Genre: Comedy Cast: Eddie Murphy, Elizabeth Banks, Gabrielle Union, Scott Caan, Ed Helms, Kevin Hart

ABDUCTIONS

Nigerian gunmen kidnap expat workers Gunmen kidnapped two foreign workers with a German construction firm in the southern Nigerian oil city of Port Harcourt on Friday, the security forces said. “Two expatriate staff of Julius Berger were abducted at about 7 am (0600 GMT) this morning,” said Rita Inoma-Abbey, a spokeswoman for the police in Rivers state, of which Port Harcourt is the capital. A spokesman for the military taskforce responsible for security in the state also confirmed the abductions. He said the nationalities of the pair could not immediately be ascertained. Julius Berger is the Nigerian unit of Bilfinger Berger, Germany’s second largest builder. No group has claimed responsibility for the abductions, the latest in the oilproducing delta where foreign workers, local politicians and small business owners or their relatives, are frequently kidnapped for ransom. Unknown gunmen kidnapped two Lebanese men in June who were working for Setraco, a local engineering firm specializing in building roads and bridges in the nearby state of Bayelsa, and demanded a ransom for their release. More than 200 foreigners have been seized in the Niger Delta since early 2006. Almost all have been released unharmed. Militants who say they are fighting for greater local control of the region’s oil resources launched a campaign of violence against the oil industry in early 2006 that has shut a fifth of Nigerian output. Russia rebuffs US over Georgia mediation Russia will reject moves by the United States to play a bigger role in defusing a standoff with Georgia, Interfax news agency quoted a Russian diplomatic source as saying on Friday. “We don’t see any reason for anyone’s mediation in settling relations,” the agency quoted the unidentified diplomatic source as saying. “We have direct dialogue with Georgia and contacts are continuing.” US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, on a visit to US ally Georgia on Thursday, called for a more intensive international effort to resolve a conflict over Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Both areas broke away from Tbilisi’s rule in wars in the 1990s. They have become the focus of escalating tension between Tbilisi and Moscow and some Western diplomats say they fear more violence. Georgian forces clashed with Abkhaz separatists earlier this week. Tbilisi recalled its

WAR CRIMES

ICC prosecutor to open Sudan case next week The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court is poised to seek the arrest of top Sudanese officials -- possibly even the president -- on Monday as he opens a new war crimes case on Darfur. The prosecution said in a statement on Thursday Luis Moreno-Ocampo would submit to the judges evidence on crimes committed in the whole of Darfur over the last five years and seek to charge an individual or individuals but gave no details. Sudan has said any such move could undermine the peace process in Darfur and aid officials fear a potential backlash. The Darfur investigation also could embarrass China, Sudan’s close ally, just weeks before the start of the Beijing Olympics. The Washington Post reported the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor will seek an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, charging him with genocide and crimes against humanity, citing UN officials and diplomats. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon declined to say who would be named or what the consequences might be for the struggling UN-African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur. Amsterdam Reuters

RESTRICTION

US Senate panel votes to expand Cuba travel A US Senate committee has approved legislation that would undo tougher travel restrictions to Cuba imposed by the Bush administration in 2004, but Republican opposition could stop the measure. The change approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee would allow Cuban-Americans to travel to Cuba once a year to visit relatives. It would also allow them to spend more money there, about $160 a day. The current restrictions allow limited family travel from the US to Cuba -- trips lasting a maximum of 14 days once every three years. Daily spending is limited to $50. If approved, the change would put US travel policy to Cuba back to where it was before the restrictions were introduced by President George W. Bush in 2004. The restrictions, aimed at reducing income obtained by Cuba’s communist state from the visits, excluded aunts, uncles and first cousins from family travel to the Caribbean island. Under the bill approved by the committee, Cuban-Americans could seek emergency visits and more relatives would qualify for the trips. Washington Reuters

ACCIDENT

Bosnian Muslims carry coffins containing the remains of their family members inside the Potocari Memorial Cemetery on Friday.

Time has not healed the wounds of Srebrenica Relatives finally got the chance on Friday to bury 308 Bosnian Muslim men killed when Bosnian Serbs overran Srebrenica thirteen years ago. The relatives, most of them women, knelt by the coffins and prayed wordlessly, palms turned upwards, according to Bosnian Muslim custom. The coffins, wrapped in green cloth, were neatly lined up on a grassy field under the noon sun. There is enough room here for all 8,000 victims of the 1995 massacre but more than a third are still missing, their bones lying in undiscovered mass graves, or in bags and boxes in a lab, awaiting identification. The mass burial of newly identified victims, once a year on the anniversary of Srebrenica’s fall in the last months of the 1992-95 war, has become a central part of Bosnian Muslim identity, a chance for remembrance and family reunions. The air is filled with sobs, greetings and the smell of thyme. “This day is even more difficult for me because I have found the body of one of my children but I cannot bury him,” said Hatidza Mehmedovic, 56, who lost her husband and two sons. The body of one son was found in

1998 but partially identified only last year. DNA analysis however cannot show which one of the two it is. Only three bones have been found of her husband’s body. “This is taking too long, I don’t want to die without finding the truth.” The massacre started on July 11, 1995, when UN troops protecting Srebrenica during a 3year siege stepped aside and allowed Bosnian Serbs to take over, separate the town’s men and boys and stage a week-long killing spree. The bodies were first buried in mass graves, then dug out with bulldozers and moved to smaller graves to hide the crime. A victim’s remains can be scattered in several locations, and are not released for burial until two-thirds of the body have been recovered. “The bodies of these 308 people have been found in as many as 55 different locations,” said Amor Masovic, the member of the Commission for Missing Persons. “Some of them had been found in the ground nearly 13 years ago.” The massacre, Europe’s worst atrocity since World War II, weighs heavily on Bosnia, a country divided emotionally and politically into Serb and Muslim-Croat regions. “Genocide occurred here. This fact cannot be

minimized it cannot be evaded and cannot and must not be denied,” said US Ambassador in Bosnia Charles English. The relatives of the victims feel the world has forgotten Srebrenica. The architects of the massacre, Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and his military chief Ratko Mladic are still on the run, indicted by the war crimes tribunal in The Hague but protected by hard-line nationalists. Haris Silajdzic, the Muslim member of the country’s three-man inter-ethnic presidency, called on Serbia to arrest the main perpetrators of the Srebrenica atrocity. “We expect Serbia...to arrest as soon as possible and hand over all those who took part in the genocide project,” he said. Russia, an ally of Serbia, wants to see the Hague tribunal closed down soon, and a Dutch court threw out this week a suit by Srebrenica survivors against the United Nations for failing to prevent the massacre. “The UN will never acknowledge their mistake, even though the crime happened on their watch, before the eyes of the world,” said 36-year old Hafiza Klepic, who came from Denmark to bury the remains of her husband. Nine British soldiers hurt by friendly fire Six of the nine British soldiers hurt in a friendly fire incident in southern Afghanistan have returned to duty after treatment, the Ministry of Defense said on Friday. Two of the others are still in hospital and one has been flown back to Britain in a stable condition, it added. The nine were on patrol near the British forward operating base Gibraltar on Thursday when they came under fire and called in air support. An Apache helicopter gunship responded and after hitting one Taliban position moved to another target which the crew believed was also occupied by Taliban. However, the occupants turned out to be the British paratroopers. “An investigation is underway into how the incident occurred and it would be inappropriate to comment until that investigation is complete,” the Ministry said. the potential new peace process on the ground,” she said at a news conference during a visit to the Latvian capital Riga. Georgia, a former Soviet republic which wants to join NATO, says Russia is trying to annex the breakaway areas. Russia says Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili wants to use force to bring the regions -- which are supported by Moscow -back under Tbilisi’s rule. Rice said the informal Friends of the SecretaryGeneral on Georgia group, which includes Britain, France, Germany, Russia and the United States, should meet at the level of senior foreign ministry officials, or higher, to find a solution. US officials travelling with Rice said such a meeting could be held within a month and they wanted senior Georgian and Abkhaz officials to take part. “We need to elevate the issue,” Rice said. “This is a serious situation.” Moscow Reuters

EU targets Kosovo pledges of 1 billion euros International donors signaled pledges worth close to 1 billion euros ($1.58 billion) for newly independent Kosovo at an aid conference on Friday billed as the first step to rebuilding its shattered economy. Prime Minister Hashim Thaci announced that Kosovo, which broke away from Serbia in February, had applied to join the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF). He reaffirmed its long-term goal of entering Western clubs such as NATO and the European Union. The European Commission pledged 500 million euros of EU funds ahead of the one-day conference and the United States offered $400 million. Individual EU states were due to add their own contributions, with Germany signaling 100 million euros. “I hope that the pledges over the conference will reach 1 billion euros,” EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn told a joint news conference with Thaci after opening the event. That would leave a shortfall against the 1.4 billion euros of funding needs which Kosovo has identified from 2009-11, but Thaci said he was confident the donations would transform what was for decades the poorest part of the former Yugoslavia. “We will make it an economic success story now ... This donors’ conference will be positive for all citizens of the country,” he said, promising fair access to funding for the Serb minority in the overwhelmingly ethnic Albanian territory. Sources close to the organization of the conference said at least half the EU’s 27 states were due to announce their own donations on top of the 500 million euros from the EU budget. Spain, one of the minority of EU states that have not yet recognized Kosovo, said it would not offer a separate donation but a Foreign Ministry spokesman in Madrid stressed it was ready to provide humanitarian aid to the population if needed.

40 percent jobless Five months after seceding from Serbia in defiance of Belgrade and its ally Russia, Kosovo remains weighed down by the destruction of the 1998-99 war -- when NATO waged a bombing campaign to drive out Serb forces engaged in ethnic cleansing -- and a legacy of waste and corruption under international stewardship. It has been recognised by 43 mostly Western states, but could face bids by Belgrade and Moscow to keep it out of the international bodies needed to attract loans and investment. However officials in Kosovo are convinced they can amass enough support to win membership of the World Bank and IMF. Thaci said he hoped for a positive answer soon to its application bids, filed on Thursday. A large part of the new aid will go to servicing Kosovo’s share of the Yugoslav debt inherited from Serbia. Analysts say that regardless of the amount raised, the government will have a tough job fulfilling the expectations of its 2 million people, the youngest population in Europe but one struggling with over 40 percent unemployment. Four stabbed to death in a single day in London The number of fatal stabbings in London this year has risen to over 50 with four more cases in a single day, but Scotland Yard said on Friday the city is not suffering an epidemic of knife crime. One of the latest victims to die in four separate incidents in London on Thursday was aged 19 -- the 20th teenager to have died violently in the capital this year. The Metropolitan police say tackling knife crime has overtaken terrorism as their number one priority and have set up a 75strong team to target those carrying weapons. Up to July 7, 49 people had died from stab wounds in London this year. Police were unable to provide comparative figures for last year, though between April

2007 and March 2008 there were 160 homicides, 72 of which were stabbings. But speaking after the latest killings, a spokesman said: “I wouldn’t describe it as an epidemic. There is an issue with knives and that is why we have launched Operation Blunt 2,” he added, referring to a Met crackdown on knives. Officers have searched 27,000 people, arrested more than 1,200 and seized 500 knives in London during the six-week campaign. The 19-year-old died after suffering multiple stab wounds in Edmonton, north London, while two men in their 20s were killed in attacks in Leyton and Walthamstow in east London, with the fourth victim - a man in his 40s -- knifed in Tottenham. Jumpýng hurdles and have longed to return to their homeland and help provide a bulwark for Turkey's development and success. Certainly in June we witnessed true Turkish nationalism in the Euro 2008 semifinals. The game was about more than just scoring. As Christopher Torchia of The Associated Press puts it, "To these fans, it's about pride and patriotism; ethnic identity and insecurity; centuries of conflict and coexistence; and the prickly, modern-day relationship between Turks and the West." Visitors often comment to me on their perception of Turks and say that it seems to be an "us versus them" mentality. Those who enter into business partnerships say it is usually a bumpy road. This mentality is not just evident in soccer but across the board: Turkey and the European Union are also partners, so to say, or shall we say instead, would-be ones. Turkey is predominantly Muslim, with a secular system that seems to want to join the European club, but the process is drifting badly, afflicted by European uneasiness and Turkish aggravation and frustration with terms Turks say are unfair. Westerners who have not had a lot of contact with Turks have

CHARLOTTE McPHERSON wondered what the reason was for Turkey's performance in the semifinals. They asked me, "How did the Turks manage to do so well?" Many of my foreign friends have commented on the Turkish team's spirit, their tenacity and that they were underdogs but they gave it their all... Perhaps the same Turkish national spirit and tenacity should be exercised in other areas of importance and values for their gain. After all, Turkey is strategically positioned: Turkey is at the crossroads of the Balkans, Caucasus and the Middle East with a door to Central Asia. Turks face some major hurdles. Turkey could become a model for other nations. All eyes are on Turkey.

The church is recognizable by a statue of the Virgin Mary above its entrance, an iron gate divided by three arches. Moreover, the archway holds further significance: A marble plaque hangs just above the rightmost arch. As a show of appreciation, the plate includes the names of Sultan Abdülhamid II, who gave his permission for the construction of the church, and Rýdvan Pasha, the þehremin (mayor) of Ýstanbul who supported the construction. This church is unique in that it is the only church that has the name of a caliph of the Islamic world above its door, sources say. The door to the church stands in the middle of the Santa Maria Han (commercial building), built to support the church's expenses. The church members' residences between the church and the han connect the two and form a sort of complex. Behind the main door is a staircase that leads down to the door of Santa Maria. The church's two-story facade is faced with ashlar and of plain design. The door is surrounded by a marble architrave and a triangular pediment decorated with a striking mosaic. Before entering, just stand on the stairs and be sure to

In terms of architecture, Santa Maria has some unique qualities that distinguish it from other Catholic churches in Ýstanbul. It is unique in its size, building materials and decoration. Unlike other churches, masonry was used in the construction of Santa Maria and its vaulted roof, according to the historical sources. Thanks to this, the church survived the great fire in 1831 with very little damage while other churches were destroyed. Upon entering the main hall, the altar and the chancel area, which feature Roman Catholic and late Baroque style, stand out prominently. Marble used for the altar was brought from Italy, where it was worked on by sculptor Lorenzo Gerotti. My first visit to the church was with Boðaziçi University's Paolo Girardelli, a professor of art history. He turned our attention to one of the inner walls which fills three bays of an originally open arcade and that resembles the Ottoman baroque style with features such as slender columns and multi-centered arches. Professor Girardelli said this part of the church must have been intentionally made in this fashion, a style very popular at the time. The church's windows also have Ottoman characteristics. The professor underlined that this borrowing was a result of a social interaction rather than obligation. The icon above the altar is one of the church's most significant valuables and has survived from the original church. It is said to have been donated by Clara Bertola Draperis, after whom the church was named. The rest of the church is colorfully ornamented.

look at the beautiful golden mosaic depicting the Virgin Marry standing on a seashell carried by two angels. Apart from being the oldest Roman Catholic church in Ýstanbul, Santa Maria Draperis was donated to a community of Franciscan friars by a member of the Genoese Draperis family in 1585. The original church was located in the Mumhane neighborhood near Tophane. Following a fire in 1659, the church was rebuilt at its current location in Beyoðlu. The marble plate above the outer entrance reads 1904, but the current church dates back to 1772, when it was renovated after being damaged during the 1767 fire of Beyoðlu. Architect Guglielmo Semprini supervised the rebuilding.

church on Ýstiklal Street is not only famous for its cafes, cinemas, bookstores and cosmopolitan environment, it also stands out for its architectural layout, which reflects the marks of its once non-Muslim residents. The area around Beyoðlu (usually referred to as Pera in historical sources) was a place where Christian subjects of the Ottoman Empire gathered throughout the 18th and 19th centuries in particular. Although the numbers of minorities living in Ýstanbul have diminished, we can still see many nonMuslim architectural examples along Ýstiklal Street and other parts of the city. Most of you must have seen or at least heard of the busy St. Anthony of Padua, perhaps the church most frequently visited by tourists and local Muslim visitors. If you are headed down Ýstiklal toward the Tünel quarter, there is another Roman Catholic church just a few meters away from St. Anthony. This is the Church of Santa Maria Draperis.

Indeed, a decade from now, the EU will be a very different union -- and Turkey will be a very different country. Let's not forget that Turkey has been a member of NATO, the Council of Europe, and that it has helped the West during all these years, as well as during the Cold War; she has been a staunch ally. If you were watching the game on ESPN then you saw how the announcer concluded its Turkey-Croatia quarterfinal program expressing, "We must salute the Turks -- for their strength, for their courage and for not giving up." Turkish daily Hürriyet described the win thus, "Joyful Turks conquered Vienna!" My hope is that Turkey will also conquer the other hurdles it faces as a nation in the coming days.

Turks often confide in me that they are tired of having to prove themselves, and of being the underdog. Sadly, history has often portrayed Turkey in a bad light, but in more recent years, as more and more people visit the country and meet Turks, they realize that Turkey as a nation and her citizens are profoundly different from the Orientalist "terrible Turk" stereotypes. If you have ever studied Turkish history, you are aware that its sociopolitical scene has been rather tumultuous over the decades. I wonder if because Turks have fought uphill for so long they have begun to perceive mountains as hills, whereas the rest of us may tend to make mountains out of molehills. If you think Turks are less patriotic because they have moved abroad -- you are wrong! Many thousands of Turks have preferred to live abroad for a period of time and save up a nest egg before they return to their homeland. Maybe you have noticed that a lot of taxi drivers or owners of small villas are Turks who have lived in Germany. You can bet that many of the Turks who drive Mercedes lived in Germany and worked at the car plant. Those Turks are proud to be Turks

My son and I watched the news reports together about the recent attack at the United States Consulate in Ýstanbul. He is half-Turkish and, like me, a dual citizen of America and Turkey. Why, he kept asking, would Turks want to hurt and kill Americans? This question was particularly relevant since he lives in Turkey, attends a Turkish school, has Turkish friends and yet also is close to America and his family back in the United States. As an expat parent, this is a hard question to answer. Even though I reassured my son that all Turks did not, in fact, hate his American side, he was dubious. The news reports told him that Turks had attacked the US Consulate, a building that represents not only his other country, but also the other part of his family. Explaining that this was the action of just a few people and that no one he knew was angry with him or me because of what country I happened to be born in helped ease some of his fears. Just how do we explain acts of violence to children? What a child witnesses in their world can affect them in ways we are often unaware of. And how confusing it must be to be a dual national witnessing one side attacking the other. Does this in subtle ways affect their self-image? As I searched for ways to explain what was being aired on the news, I wondered how my son feels about having loyalties to two countries that seem to him to be at odds. As parents, we all strive to protect our children from harm. Rather than keep the TV tuned to the news, after the first reports were in and there looked to be no new developments to be announced soon, we turned off the set and talked together. In his efforts to try and make sense of this new glitch in his personal world, Ali Adem puzzled over what would cause someone to want to hurt someone else, particularly someone who they did not even know. "What about the families of those policemen who were killed?" he asked, "They are now so sad because their babas are dead." Just how do we, as parents, explain to our children about violence they witness themselves or see on the nightly news? How can we reassure them that the world is not, or should not be, a scary place? Unfortunately I suspect that there are no easy, pat answers to give children that can answer their questions and assuage their fears. Expats as well as dual nationals can have a very difficult time finding ways to clarify events their children feel close to. It is easier for adults to recognize that the acts of a few people do not represent an entire country. But children often have trouble making that distinction. To reassure them is not an easy task. But, after talking about the situation with my son, he slowly began to understand that this action did not have any bearing on how his friends or family felt about him. But, he still does not understand what causes some people to act out of violence. And I too am at a loss to understand the situation, much less explain it clearly. He does know, however, that Turkey is our home and this is where we choose to live. Violence can happen anywhere in the world, but when it happens in a host or home country, it becomes more real to all living there. After we watched the latest updates about the situation on the television, Ali Adem announced that he was going to build a new American consulate out of his blocks. "This will be a building that no one bad can come into. All Turks and Americans will like each other when they come here," he explained as he began construction. Wouldn't it be nice if all of life's problems could be solved so easily? Send comments and questions to k.hamilton@todayszaman.com
