FUTURE CRAFTWORKS

The Role of Craftsmanship in Sustainable Economic and Social Systems

Manufacturing, consumerism, and construction done at massscale drive our economies and ecologies to the brink. Rising land values and aggressive development practices are pushing the Craft industry out of the city.

Future Craftworks is a project that responds to these issues by creating an infrastructure supporting local craft in a way to foster local economic development which is still ecologically sustainable.

Existing Paradigm: Proposed Response: PRoject Overview

The Hackney Wick Craft Initiative is a neighbour scheme distributed throughout the Hackney Wick character area with the main goal to support the local craft industry.

The Initiative takes advantage of pieces of land which aren’t seen as viable for building housing or other valuable land uses. These ‘Found Spaces’ are often small, awkwardly shaped sites found usually on the outskirts of the commercial and industrial areas.

The core goal is providing craftspeople with truly affordable space in the heart of the increasingly unaffordable Hackney Wick. Potentially extending to the rest of London.

This will contribute to the higher order goals of the project: local economic development (See U.N. SDGs)

The principles learned and developed during the research and design of studios on a small selection of sites, will be applicable/ adaptable to other sites and crafts.

Dying City

Along the boundaries between the old grim Industrial estates and the new, desolate, 'affordable' apartments there are marginal pieces of land which remain behind.

These exist in a 'development limbo'; too...

• small

• awkwardly shaped

• close to pullution creating industry

... to be redeveloped into housing or public space, and at the same time too...

• small • awkwardly shaped

• isolated

...for commercial / industrial use.

So all that reamins is ... Desolate Residential Dead Space Dying Industrial

FOUND SPACE

These spaces offer a wide range of site conditions: varying adjacencies, ground conditions, light, smell, sound, privacy, connectivity, load capacity characteristics.

But all have two things in common:

• won't be redeveloped within the next 2 years

• capable of sustaining single stand alone light weight structures.

Dying Craft

The list of Endangered Crafts in the UK grows steadily year-to-year.

The Hackney Wick art studio cooperative, Stour Space has been priced-out.

There has been a trend of loss of Craft in the city of London and in Hackney. Hackney Wick was an area with a strong culture of art and craft. But more and more cheap industrial buildings which were reused as studios and workshops are being redeveloped into hypothetically ‘affordable’ apartments.

Even before the rise in home working and home craft during the COVID pandemic, Craft has played a significant role in the economy and culture as well as in the lives of many people, particularly in Hackney. It can be a powerful means of addressing several issues outlined by the U.N. SDGs and circular economy model, namely sustainable local economic development, the project will aim to support this through policy and design.

CraftsPEople

There are an estimated 150,000 people working in the craft industry in the U.K. roughly half of these are located in London. In Hackney, around 15% of people are employed in craft/ creative industries which equates to around 30,000 people (the majority of these people live in Hackney).

Focus and priority in terms of spatial designation will be given to professional craftspeople as craft is their main source of income and their work will be the primary factor attracting the public to the area which will have complementary positive effect on local business.

The argument for the preservation and innovation in craft is self-evident as craft is a part of all cultures. But craft’s benefits go beyond cultural, economic or therapeutic, yet the craft industry is undervalued by the government.

These are some of the Craftspeople already joining the Future Craftswork Network...

Craft Zones: Hackney

Research has identified 6 concentrated ‘Creative Zones’ in Hackney. All are similarly sized but quite varied in residential / commercial / industrial typological make up.

Hackney Wick (HW) is the most varied among these zones both in terms of typologies and crafts.

HW also has one of the highest rates of new residential development and rising rent prices.

Supporting the Network

Hackney Wick is a prime location for this project. Historically the area has had a strong culture of art and craft with a high number of craftspeople working and living locally, however cheap industrial buildings which were reused as studios and workshops are being redeveloped into ‘affordable’ apartments forcing craftspeople to move away.

Nurturing Craft Culture

Protecting and nurturing the culture of craft within Hackney Wick is the core goal of the Future Craftworks project.

Three main components of the Craft Culture, and ways the project aims to support them are:

Creating Collaborating Sharing

Facilitate the craft process by providing craftspeople with truly affordable space that's flexible and adaptive to their particular use.

Connect crafts people within the FCW network to enable and encourage collaboration using digital tools as well as shared spaces and resources.

Sharing craft is much more than mere commerce. By organising events and open days, and training courses encourages the exchange of ideas, skills, and inspirations.

Nurturing Craft Culture

Part of creating and nurturing a craft network can be done using digital tools.

The Future Craftworks platform allows users to create user profiles and register their needs so that algorithms can find the most appropriate site and studio.

The Message Board allows users to connect and communicate in regards to collaboration in the realm of craft.

Character & Way-Finding

Colour and form have been used to identify key points in the city for hundreds of years.

Barber's Pole - Red (and sometimes blue) in colour when affixed to the side of a building signifies a particular profession.

Red Telephone Box - (as well as the red post box or red bus) SIGNIFY a public utility and can act a local landmarks

'House' - Square with isosceles triangle on top with a small protruding rectangle, is almost universally recognised as a house and become the 'home button' on websites and applications.

Future CrAftworks Studios build on these conceptsusing a vivid colour and unique form to create new local landmarks / waypoints of Craft in the city and carve out an identity for the community it aims to draw.
