José María Tomás Llavador
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE José María Tomás Llavador (1954) is an architect with a degree from the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Valencia. In 1992 he founded his studio, TomásLlavador Arquitectos e Ingenieros, structured by young professionals of diverse nationalities that form a creative, multidisciplinary and dynamic team. His work in Spain includes the Masterplan and extension project of Feria Valencia and IFA Alicante, the Masterplans of Balcón al Mar and the 32nd America’s Cup and has designed the team bases for Team Alinghi, BMW-Oracle Racing and Team Germany. He has designed and adapted the old Lanera or wool factory from 1909, in Valencia, transforming it into the current Hotel Westin. In 2007 his proposal, in collaboration with J. Nouvel, won the International Ideas Competition Valencia al mar - Marina Real Juan Carlos I. He is also the author of the design and construction of ACTIU Technological Park in Castalla (Alicante), which has been awarded the Internacional Green GOOD DESIGN™ from the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum. 2011, the International BEX 2009 prize in the category of sustainable architecture, Honorable Mention of the 1st National Build Award NAPISA for Best Industrial project, 2009 and X FOPA Award to Project of the year in 2008. On an international level, José María Tomás has developed the projects for the commercial ports of Izmir and Mersin in Turkey; and an Urban Regeneration project in Lima, Peru. He has won the International Competitions for the development for the new waterfront of La Spezia (Italy) and for the design of the new Piazza della Visitazione in Matera (Italia), the latter awarded the International Architecture Award 2010 from the Chicago Atheneum and European Centre for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Studies. He is also working on projects in Costa Rica, Peru, Colombia, Turkey and Dubai. He has lectured at international conferences and professional forums in Istanbul, Palermo, Bologna, Lisbon and Rome. He is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and Associate urban planning Professor at the School of Architecture of the University of Valencia. Tomás Llavador founded and directs the magazine Lars. Cultura y Ciudad and the editorial I See Books, both dedicated to reflection and debate about the city and related social and cultural issues. Tomás Llavador’s work analyzes the city as a whole, seeking sustainable urban development together with a balanced and harmonic design, where space for living, working and playing coexist. He is especially interested in the urban transformation of opportunity spaces such as obsolete urban areas or waterfronts. Both at the urban and building scale, he creates flexible, mixed-use spaces with proper identity, where natural light, green spaces and sustainable materials are of major importance.

Our goal was to improve the basic industrial plant model, creating a sustainable complex for ACTIU, a firm which designs and manufactures furniture and avant-garde interior equipment for offices and work spaces, which would efficiently resolve their needs while transmitting their values through a new corporate headquarters. The project includes three production warehouses of 13,000 m² each and a logistics building of 18,000 m² and a 6,000 m² corporate building. Not only is it a space with a low ratio of built up surface area and vast green areas, but the facilities have been designed with systems that optimize natural resources. The orientation of the architecture allows making maximum use of natural lighting while electronic systems optimize artificial lighting. It is the very roof of the logistics building, with its network of gutter beams, which serve as collection canals for the rainwater that is passed along to underground deposits with the objective of sustaining their own industrial and irrigation consumption needs. In addition, the rooftop solar plants produces 7,000,000 kwh per year, 6 times the current needs of ACTIU, avoiding emitting to the atmosphere 8,300 Tm of CO² a year.

The project includes three production warehouses of 13.000 m² each, in which is conducted all the manufacturing and production process of the company, dedicated to design and produce office furniture. The warehouses have a rectangular plan of 96 x 130m area each. They are located on the east side of the plot, one after another, separated by 12m wide streets, leaving a green space in the building perimeter of 7m wide, thereby keeps a facade separation of 26m. The three warehouses are intended for the production of office furniture, taking place in each of them a certain work. Working diagram of the production, is a primary factor that largely conditions the layout, geometry and configuration of the buildings. The raw material, classified by their nature, are directed to the appropriate ship, where it is stored and handled. And Once finished the manufacturing process, from the docks located on the south side of the building, the product goes to the logistics ship.

TISSAT’s aim is to provide the best service to its clients as managers of highly critical data, using the latest technology and introducing energy efficiency as a bonus. They wanted to design a secure and energy efficient infrastructure which positions TISSAT at the forefront of the European Data Centers and allows them to undertake the international market. The project includes the design of two volumes with different programs conceived around a generating core which shelters the main content of the building: the RACKS’ room, where the data is stored, guarded and managed. This space is designed to be extremely secure both physically and energetically. Nothing can go wrong, the information must be protected from any power supply failure and certainly from any physical intrusion. Based on these conditions, the building is designed as a closed container that is only open in offices and access hall areas, those which connect the Data Center with its customers. Here transparencies are used; to see without being seen. A double skin is designed: a first one made of glass and a second of perforated zinc, which allows views and the entry of natural light to the more social parts of the building. The combination of materials in the ensemble creates an industrial and technological image.

The exhibition pavilions represent the pillars of every trade fair. All the other buildings acquire significance in dialogue with them. In the new Feria Valencia the four large pavilions stand out not only for their dimension, but also for their urban integration. Viewed from above, it is striking to observe their harmony and connection with the other buildings of the site, a far cry from the architectural chaos of the past. Each pavilion covers a surface area of 11,000 square meters. The pavilions are organized on various levels –an original solution given that exhibition sites around the world are generally built and extended horizontally rather than vertically. Several configurations of access and control were designed to facilitate the flexibility and versatility of the space. The pavilions can be used simultaneously and be linked to one another when large events are hosted that require as much space as possible. Furthermore, the space on a single level can be divided to host a number of different events simultaneously. The ensemble of pavilions is connected by a central street-gallery, cross-shaped in floor plan, which makes the most of natural sunlight filtered through the roof. The result is a luminous street that organizes and gives access to all services, including restaurants, visitor information, offices, etc. This inviting location naturally fosters exchanges between exhibitors and clients. It is a lively and diverse place where busy and crowded areas alternate with quieter ones suitable for more contemplative and relaxing activities. In contrast, the pavilions are large warehouses, where the lighting is artificial and controlled, converting them into multi-purpose spaces. Only on the upper exhibition level, the roof, a lightweight double-layer spaceframe structure over a single space of 160x72m, allows natural light to filter through ribbon-like skylights. The existence of an exterior perimeter street allows the circulation of large trucks on each exhibition floor level, and direct access to large-size transport.

On the lowest level of the Events Center one finds the access to Pavilion 5, where the center is converted into a lobby for a multipurpose pavilion. From here one can contemplate the scope of the building, its glazed roof at almost 30m height and the upper floors which pour out over the central garden space. Thanks to its large bays and free height, the building can de used to host both conventional trade fair activities and institutional, civic or cultural events. Prefabricated materials were used to shorten construction time. The most original feature of the pavilion lies in the prefabricated concrete girders and prefabricated concrete panels that form the ceiling of the hall, which also serves as the base for the large outdoor square that opens on the Central Forum and Convention and Exhibition Center. The garden space has a double function, on one hand it provides a recreational area for the fairgrounds and on the other it becomes the prelude to the New Pavilions allowing distant views of these buildings and their forum access, the Forum Center.

The base for Team Alinghi, defending champion of the competition, is sited on the front line of the Muelle de la Aduana of the Inner Harbor of the Port of Valencia. The base, expressly designed for the 32nd America’s Cup, serves as a state-of-the-art headquarters for the team, design workshop, as well as storage for the racing vessels. In addition to the sailing team offices and gym, the base houses public spaces such as a shop, interactive zones, VIP guest lounge, as well as the team’s most important and coveted secret, the design of the competition vessel. Lightweight materials such as steel and glass have been used to help define the more and less private spaces, and textiles that recall the boat sails bring shade to the terrace spaces. The transparency of the inclined western façade allows the building to connect with the city along its most public front. The most private areas are accessed port side. The most exclusive terraces act as a seafront showcase, while providing guests with spectacular views.

For the final design of its headquarters in the Port of Valencia, BMW-Oracle Racing conveyed that its main priority was that the design reflect the team’s approach to the competition and the particular image the sponsors wished to create with their presence in the city. This is the largest base of all of the ones built for America’s Cup and, like the rest, is easily accessible from the port’s inner roads and has an extensive waterfront to facilitate manoeuvring the racing vessels. BMW-Oracle Racing additionally chose a strategic location that would offer an excellent view of the port’s inner basin. The starting point for the project was a basic module that the America’s Cup organization provided to all teams, based on which we developed a functional program and the exterior finish desired by BMW-Oracle Racing. The result is a large box with a service front that has large openings in the sea-front façade. The exterior design has an industrial appearance. The south and west façades are composed of glazing with hidden profiles, offering a visual connection between the building’s interior and exterior. Above, we placed two lines of slats and cushioned modules to frame the middle levels of the building. These modules are reminiscent of air-bags, establishing an interesting link with car technology, the business of one of the main sponsors. The building houses the team’s offices, gym, dining hall and screening room and also provides other leisure services for the crew and their families. Team guests share spaces with them, such as the lounge-bar, an area for relaxation where the competition can be followed on screen. The rooms on the second floor give way to a terrace overlooking the sea. The design of the space avoids the dispersion of guests on the roof and offers an ideal view of the inner dock of the Port of Valencia. The floor was clad with wood decking in combination with a railing of steel and laminated glass. The choice of these materials is consistent with the team’s predominant image in the port area, and confirms BMW-Oracle Racing’s presence as a distinguished team in this sophisticated and first class America’s Cup competition.

United Internet Team Germany, one of the thirteen teams participating in the 32nd America’s Cup, had a small site for the construction of their base in the Port of Valencia. The building forms part of the set of bases built next to the Modernist warehouses in the south zone of the Port’s dock. The architectural design makes maximum use of the available area to create a welcoming building open to the public. Its details are a permanent reminder of the team’s origin and their approach to the competition. The project contemplated the creation of a container to house the boat, structuring the crew’s workshops, gym and other work spaces around it. To accommodate this program, we designed a clean and emphatic volume, with predominantly straight lines and a clearly modulated façade. The materials used and, above all, the design of the spaces reflect a warm and welcoming image to the public. For example, the base was not fenced in to prevent access to the boats’ maneuvering yard. Unlike the other bases, which manifest in their architecture the famed secrecy surrounding the teams with years of experience in America’s Cup, the separation of work areas in the Team Germany base was not as evident due to the team’s approach to the event. As it was the team’s first participation in the competition, an open layout permitted visitors to approach the crew’s work zones, and the space where the boat was housed was made visible from the reception area.

The project aims to execute a new plan sports building bound to complement the restoration intervention of the wooden halls of the old Cross factory. Thus the final plot will contain two buildings, old and new, surrounded by free space will be located in the sports and garden area. The project is drawn from knowledge of the plot and the patrimonial and material value of the protected building. The total size of the warehose which is being restored is 51’35 x 89’00m, with a total area of 4,570 m². The structure is two adjoining warehouses with a width between axes of 18’90 m. and a cantilever at each end of 6.75 m. Transversely has 21 frames with a spacing of 4.40 m between trusses. The project has the will to recover the memory of the existence of two parts of the building. It proposes the creation of a pergola which becomes the reflection of the lost building, built with new and light materials, but is arranged to recreate the memory of the street and can explain that the building that has been saved belonged to a larger set.

The core of this equipment are two closed sports halls whose arched roofs, facing one another, provide continuity to the whole space and facilitate the brightness indoors. The first hosts a sports court and a grandstand and the other contains the heated pool. Between them lies an indoor track flanked by elevated walkways that serve as passageways for users. In the design we have chosen galvanized steel and concrete as high purity and simplicity materials that contribute to the overall strength expression. The architectural design creates a remarkable quality space, and cares also about aspects such as safety and durability of the facilities, located in the maritime district of Valencia, near the port, which brings humidity conditions and substantial environmental salinity.

Nowadays it is a leading company of professional services in architecture and engineering, dedicated to the design, planning and comprehensive development of building and infrastructure projects in the urban environment. it has offices in Valencia, Dubai and El Salvador and has developed projects in Italy, Turkey, UAE, Morocco, Peru, El Salvador and Costa Rica. The wide range of typologies the Studio has worked on comprises from trade fairs and hospitals to sports stadiums, ports and waterfronts, railway stations, universities and urban parks. The works in Spain include the Masterplan and extension project of Feria Valencia -the third largest in Europe with aproximately 1,000,000 built square metres- and IFA Alicante, an Auditorium and Conservatory in Torrevieja, Olympic Pools in Valencia, the Masterplans of Balcón al Mar and the 32nd America’s Cup and the design of the team bases for Team Alinghi, BMW-Oracle Racing and Team Germany. TomásLlavador Arquitectos + Ingenieros has designed and adapted the old Lanera or wool factory from 1909, in Valencia, transforming it into the current Hotel Westin. In 2007 the proposal, in collaboration with J. Nouvel, won the International Ideas Competition Valencia al mar - Marina Real Juan Carlos I. José María Tomás Llavador is also the author of the design and construction of ACTIU Technological Park in Castalla (Alicante), which has been Certified EB GOLD 2011 and awarded the Internacional Green GOOD DESIGN™ from the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum. 2011, the International BEX 2009 prize in the category of sustainable architecture, Honorable Mention of the 1st National Build Award NAPISA for Best Industrial project, 2009 and X FOPA Award to Project of the year in 2008. In collaboration with Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA, the studio designed the the extension of the IVAM (Institut Valencia d’Art Modern), Spain’s first modern art museum which was was awarded the Golden Lion Award in the 2004 Venice Biennale. On an international level, TomásLlavador Arquitectos + Ingenieros has developed the projects for the commercial ports of Izmir and Mersin in Turkey; and an Urban Regeneration project in Lima, Peru. The studio has won the International Competitions for the development for the new waterfront of La Spezia (Italy) and for the design of the new Piazza della Visitazione in Matera (Italy), the latter awarded the International Architecture Award 2010 from the Chicago Atheneum and European Centre for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Studies.
