Sochi, located on the coast of the Black Sea, is the largest resort city in Russia. The location of the new shopping and leisure complex is situated in the heart of the city, near the port and the railway station. The new shopping complex is more than 500 m in length, so it must be permeable in the east-west direction. The complex is designed as a public plaza connecting the existing traffic, green areas and open spaces. The trade gallery has two levels connected by a system of elevated walkways, bridges and outdoor staircases. Sochi’s subtropical climate allows an outdoor shopping center which also minimizes maintenance costs. It is conceived as an elegant and welcoming space, a sense of an oasis in the heart of the city. Above the commercial building roofs are transformed into terraces for sport, relaxation and restoration. These spaces give us the opportunity to incorporate nature and open spaces to the building. The existing road along the east side of the complex becomes a tree-lined green walk with gardens and playgrounds. This new pedestrian area not only improves the quality of urban life but also connects the town hall square with the green areas in the north, creating a pedestrian walk to the train station. Traffic is diverted through the city’s main axis. The access ramps to the underground parking are located on the west side where the ground is lower. Street furniture, lighting and flowers transform the area into an attractive urban space which invites people to go window-shopping. Restaurants and cafes have outdoor terraces on the promenade.

The exhibition pavilions represent the pillars of every trade fair. All the other buildings acquire significance in dialogue with them. In the new Feria Valencia the four large pavilions stand out not only for their dimension, but also for their urban integration. Viewed from above, it is striking to observe their harmony and connection with the other buildings of the site, a far cry from the architectural chaos of the past. Each pavilion covers a surface area of 11,000 square meters. The pavilions are organized on various levels –an original solution given that exhibition sites around the world are generally built and extended horizontally rather than vertically. Several configurations of access and control were designed to facilitate the flexibility and versatility of the space. The pavilions can be used simultaneously and be linked to one another when large events are hosted that require as much space as possible. Furthermore, the space on a single level can be divided to host a number of different events simultaneously. The ensemble of pavilions is connected by a central street-gallery, cross-shaped in floor plan, which makes the most of natural sunlight filtered through the roof. The result is a luminous street that organizes and gives access to all services, including restaurants, visitor information, offices, etc. This inviting location naturally fosters exchanges between exhibitors and clients. It is a lively and diverse place where busy and crowded areas alternate with quieter ones suitable for more contemplative and relaxing activities. In contrast, the pavilions are large warehouses, where the lighting is artificial and controlled, converting them into multi-purpose spaces. Only on the upper exhibition level, the roof, a lightweight double-layer spaceframe structure over a single space of 160x72m, allows natural light to filter through ribbon-like skylights. The existence of an exterior perimeter street allows the circulation of large trucks on each exhibition floor level, and direct access to large-size transport.

< AWARDS > - Internacional Arquitecture Award 2010 Chicago Athenaeum and European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies - First Prize, International Ideas Competition for the Redesign of the Piazza della Visitazione in Matera, Italy. 2009

Matera, historic city and UNESCO world heritage site since 1993, known for its morphology and functionality, offers an absolutely fascinating spectacle for those visiting the city. The Piazza della Visitazione today is a residual space within the urban fabric and the central connection element between different parts of the city. The residual space becomes an opportunity for development and essential growth of the city. The project proposes a pedestrian network that improves the quality of the urban environment and protects the identity of the historical city with guarantees of sustainability. The space organizes the existing program which includes a shopping area, an information centre and a railway network, combined with the new program which includes an auditorium-theatre, a library, a restaurant, an exhibition hall and a cafeteria, as well as the coordination of the open spaces for leisure and work, by managing a balanced system of green spaces. These activities mainly take place under the main buildings, linked by commercial arteries. For the configuration of the topography, a plaza was designed to create a new open space. The new civic centre, a segmented and fragmented volume, settles on the square like a stone that adapts to the topography of the quarry, generating two types of folds. Both, the exhibition centre and the auditorium-theater, interact with the square through independent accesses.

The base, expressly designed for the 32nd America’s Cup, serves as a state-of-the-art headquarters for the team, design workshop, as well as storage for the racing vessels. In addition to the sailing team offices and gym, the base houses public spaces such as a shop, interactive zones, VIP guest lounge, as well as the team’s most important and coveted secret, the design of the competition vessel. Lightweight materials such as steel and glass have been used to help define the more and less private spaces, and textiles that recall the boat sails bring shade to the terrace spaces. The transparency of the inclined western façade allows the building to connect with the city along its most public front. The most private areas are accessed port side. The most exclusive terraces act as a seafront showcase, while providing guests with spectacular views of the port and regattas.

For the design of their headquarters at the Port of Valencia, BMW-Oracle Racing stated that their main need was that it should adapt to their approach to the competition and to the image that their sponsors wanted to project with their presence in the city. This is the base with the largest surface area of all built for the America’s Cup and, like the others, is easily accessible from the port’s interior roads and has a large waterfront which enables the racing boats’ operations. BMW-Oracle chose a location which gave the building an excellent view of the harbour basin. The project starts with the basic module provided by the organization of the America’s Cup to all the teams which developed the functional program. And continues with the desired exterior finish by BMW-Oracle Racing. The result is a big box with a frontage of services and large openings in the façade overlooking the sea. The exterior design achieves an industrial appearance. The south and west façades consist of glazing with a concealed profile which achieves the visual connection between interior and exterior. Over it we placed two lines of slats and padded modules to frame the intermediate levels of the building. This modules are reminiscent of the air-bags and establish and interesting relationship with the automobile industry’s technology, a sector which sponsors the team. The building houses the team’s offices, the fitness room, the dining-room, the hall for projections and other entertainment services for the crew and their families. The guests share with them spaces such as the lounge-bar and a lounge area where they can follow, through displays, the evolution of the competition. The units on the second floor give way to a terrace facing the sea front. The design of the space prevents the guests to disperse throughout the deck and provides an optimum view of the inner harbour. We used outdoor wood floor combined with a steel railing and laminated glass, a choice in line with the prevailing image in the port area and with the introduction of BMW-Oracle Racing as a team featured as sophisticated and cutting-edge as the America’s Cup.
