Ergonomics for cyclists. Perfectly realized. The Ergon Philosophy

Carbon monocoque frames, electronic gears and intelligent shocks... the technological developments in the bike industry are pushing the boundaries. To make bikes more enjoyable, more comfortable, more efficient or faster, manufacturers are concentrating on “Hardware Technology.” However, will technology alone make the desired gains possible? According to a study from the German Sports University in Cologne, more than 90% of those people taking part complained of aches and pains when cycling. An important reason for this is poor ergonomics. Incorrect ergonomics on the bike can turn discomfort into sharp pain in a hurry and can ruin your day on the bike. In competition, incorrect ergonomics can waste valuable energy and prevent a place on the podium. Ergonomics is about focusing on the person, not the technology. At Ergon, cyclists are at the center of our search for the best connection between rider and bike.

Bike ergonomics is an extremely complicated endeavor and requires knowledge across different disciplines. The development team at Ergon is made up of specialists in various areas; there are bike experts, racers, sports scientists, ergonomics experts, engineers and industrial designers. Our aim is to develop products that offer the best ergonomics for cyclists, which combine the best scientific principles with the practicality of realworld usage. The performance of Ergon products is tested in scientific laboratory studies, on the test rigs of the technical institutes and just as importantly with blood, sweat and tears in everyday use or on the World Cup race circuit. Cycling press editorials, international design awards and numerous victories in the toughest race conditions in the world confirm that Ergon is on the cutting edge of cycling performance.

BD1

A cycling backpack featuring a revolutionary carrying system. The central Flink® Link ball joint allows for huge freedom of movement for the upper body. Pressure is evenly distributed on both shoulders, protecting the back. This makes for a completely new and comfortable carrying sensation. Gender specific carrying systems each in two sizes. The BD1 is the perfect lightweight compact daypack. The BD1 features a large top opening design and includes one small external gear pocket, hydration bladder sleeve, helmet holder and integrated rain cover. The cycling press: “Our test rider found Ergon’s backpack … made for an unusually comfortable and secure carrying sensation. It creates light and even pressure on the shoulders, even when heavily loaded. On steep descents the backpack didn’t even once slide forward, nor did it ‘dance’ around when jumping. It simply stays put. It is so good that when you return to a traditional backpack, you feel as if there is something not quite right…Superb.“ MountainBIKE Magazine Germany 02/07

Goodbye Gravity. Nobody really likes carrying a backpack... it is a necessity. It restricts your movement while the weight of the load has an undesired effect on your skeleton, muscles and posture. In a word, it is exhausting. People are dynamic and constantly moving. As you move, any load will be continually transferred to your body and your shoulders will have to move this weight, constantly putting your muscles under strain. The more active you are, the greater the effect. Lower capacity day packs, touring packs and backpacks for athletes are based on an outdated design which ignores the influence of dynamic movement on carrying comfort. As ergonomic specialists, our target is to make backpacks as comfortable as possible. Our revolutionary new backpack design – a direct result of our exhaustive studies – allows the upper body to move freely and independantly from the load. The semi-rigid frame transfers the load lower, to the body’s center of gravity, and to a point where the back’s movement is minimal. To achieve the desired freedom of movement for the upper body it was obvious that the shoulder harness system needed to be isolated from the load

resulting in a brilliant and revolutionary solution. Using the central Flink® Link ball joint, in combination with a load bearing frame, Ergon has created a backpack featuring unequaled comfort and freedom of movement.

Natural range of movement. Optimal load distribution. Noticeably lightweight

Optimized Ergonomics for all body sizes. For Men. For Women

The central Flink® Link ball joint isolates the pack from movement of the shoulders. This creates a total freedom of movement for the upper body. The frame distributes the load over a large surface area placing the load’s centre of gravity at the waist, completely relieving the spine and the back muscles. Compared to a normal backpack, any shoulder movements do not require your muscles to lift the entire weight of the pack as the Flink® Link ball joint moves to match your actions. Ergon pack users experience 10 – 20% of the total load on their shoulders, perfectly balanced and with even pressure distribution... protecting your back from strain. This brilliant construction method is the reason behind our packs‘ amazing comfort. The backpack remains stable in every situation, undesired slipping is prevented and comfort is preserved. A huge advantage.

Unbelievable but true. The fit of many traditional small to medium backpacks is dictated by their carrying capacity. Small packs are for smaller people. Large packs are for larger people. Very few manufacturers account for the physical differences between men and women. The Ergon backpack geometry is specifically developed to fit different body forms. Big and small, male and female. There are two different mens carrying systems, and two different carrying systems for women. Each one has adjustable torso length settings. It might be a little thing, but you can really feel the difference and it works. Tall or short, broad shouldered or not – an Ergon backpack will fit you perfectly.

Bladder system for Ergon and non Ergon hydration backpacks. Made from an hygienic, FDA tested Polyurethane. The extremely robust material can be stretched up to 8 times its current length without ripping. The large opening allows easy filling and cleaning, as the entire bladder is reversible. The extra long, taste free hose is specially designed to match perfectly to the extra length required by Ergon backpacks. It features a 90 degree angled bite valve, preventing unwanted kinking. For cleaning and ease of use the hose has a plug and play connector, allowing its removal - this means that the bladder can be filled without removing the hose from your backpack. A major advantage over other systems. An integrated valve prevents liquid escaping when the hose is disconnected. Clip in compatibility with Ergon’s backpacks - the ultimate bladder for your Ergon Motion System.

Irina Kalentieva www.irina-kalentieva.com “Dreams can come true, and this was mine” Irina Kalentieva said, beaming with delight with her Olympic Bronze Medal in hand. “Riding at the Olympics is a huge honor and having been given the chance to ride again after Athens, being able to take home a medal is wonderful” the Russian Topeak Ergon rider said. It adds the cherry to the rider’s career which has seen her as World Champion 2007, 7 times National Champion and winner of countless national and international races. Irina has ridden for Topeak-Ergon since 2006 and has become one of the family. Her feedback and input for new products is invaluable.

German National Champion 2007 and Beijing Olympian

Wolfram Kurschat www.wolfram-kurschat.com

Fanatical about the smallest detail, both on his bike and his training, Wolfram Kurschat’s approach is one that brings him real results. Winning the German National Championships in 2007 he left nothing to chance, it was a result that took him to the Olympics in Beijing. This perfectionism is extremely useful for Ergon. Feedback about the products from real world competitive use is essential. “Having someone to call on, who rides as much as Wolfram and goes into such fine detail is great for us” Kim Tofaute, Head of Research and Development at Ergon reveals.

Dave Wiens

Team Introduction

Mountain Bike Legend

Three years, one World Champion, two Olympians, multiple National Titles, multiple World Cup Wins and multiple Domestic Wins on both sides of the Atlantic. Team Topeak Ergon continues to make their mark internationally – whether on the podium at the Olympics, winning World Cup races 2008, or Dave Wiens beating a certain Lance Armstrong to win his sixth consecutive Leadville 100 title at the infamous endurance event.

A career that has seen him as the US National Champion twice, he has managed as well as raced for teams. His status was officially recognized in 2002 with his admission to the “Mountain Bike Hall of Fame”.

Ergon International Racing Ergon’s support does not stop with Team Topeak Ergon. Through our international distributors Ergon can be seen being used by top level athletes World Wide. From Japan to the United Kingdom, Brazil to Italy. Many top riders demand they ride Ergon grips. We also support many local events, where the unsung heros, the end users, get to experience Ergon.

In 2008 Dave won the Leadville 100 endurance race for the sixth time in a row. It is a 100 mile test of your mind and body. As if that wasn‘t impressive enough, his competition in 2007 and 2008 has seen him racing head to head against both Lance Armstrong and Floyd Landis. With this kind of experience, Wien’s input to Ergon cannot be quantified.

Bobby Root “The Wheelie King”

RobJ “Freeride Junky”

Marcus Klausmann “Dr. Downhill”

Bobby Root is one of the legends of the Freeride bike scene. The American is famous for his spectacular speed wheelies in the cult Mountain Bike films “New World Disorder”. Dirt-Bikes are Bobby’s life. For Ergon the 31 year old brings his years of experience into our product development.

“If I am honest, I was somewhat sceptical when I first mounted the GE1 grips on my bike. My doubts evaporated though following the first ride. Normally my hands and arms tire very quickly, however when it got gnarly I noticed a considerably higher level of sensation to normal”.

The 11 times German downhill champion is a complete perfectionist in terms of his bike and the components. “As a downhiller you need to have blind trust in your bike. The GE1 grips are utterly secure on the bar. With their inner and outer stops they offer perfect control. Their optimal shape means I have more control over the machine”.
