1974-2009: 35 years of The Art of High Performance
35years
Tom Ritchey: 35 years dedicated to the Art of High Performance In the early days, Tom’s goal was simply to find a solution to his dissatisfaction with the status quo: bikes and components that were heavy and lacked elegance and functionality. Further tinkering with friends of a similar mindset led to the first bikes to be ridden down Mount Tamalpais – the mountain bike was born. In those days most designs were coming out of tinkerers’ garages with very mixed results, but ‘TR’ consistently dreamt up products that put the mountain bike on an evolutionary path. The success of the mountain bike led to great changes in the industry on the product side, but equally revolutionary on the business structure side, and his response to this reality was no less pioneering: In 2001, faced with the reality that his current structure wasn’t working, Tom cut ties with his trading company and began independent operations in Taiwan at a time when that practice was unthinkable. Against the odds, the gamble paid off and Ritchey leapfrogged many competitors using superior technology and consistent execution - a reputation that endures to this day.
Ritchey is also a leader in product testing and quality assurance. Tom has always appreciated the wisdom of rigorous testing but using an independent bike industry specific lab to confirm test results supplied by vendors and in house fatigue testing machines was a welcome addition. The three-stage process of vendor testing, Ritchey internal testing and independent lab confirmation has led to a high standard of quality that each product must achieve before being released to the market. With time has come the need to give something back and leave a mark that transcends business and the bottom line. Enter Project Rwanda, which strives to further economic development in Rwanda through bicycle-based initiatives. Coffee farmers in this small African country are benefiting greatly from a bike designed by Tom, which enables them to spend less time transporting their crops, and more time working on them, fetching a higher market price and escalating standards of living. The most remarkable thing about the last 35 years, however, is not what has changed at Ritchey, but what has stayed the same. Tom still rides his bike every day – not for the sake of image or obligation, but because he is happiest in the saddle. The bike is his office chair, and his best ideas always seem to come to him while out riding. Guided by Tom’s love for the bicycle and the passion that goes into his designs, Ritchey continues to forge ahead with the same devotion to quality in innovation that we always have – and always will. After 35 years of the art of high performance, there are plenty of things to celebrate about the past, but even more to look forward to in the future. Here’s to you, Tom.
1974-2009: 35 years of The Art of High Performance
Thomas Frischknecht Since showing up as an unknown teenager at the inaugural World Mountain Bike Championships in Durango, Colorado in 1990 and finishing second to MTB legend Ned Overend, Thomas Frischknecht has never stopped surprising us. That was when he first became friends with Tom and started riding for Team Ritchey, and he’s been riding with us ever since. In that span, Frischi has become the winningest racer in World Cup history with 18 race victories, 3 World Cup titles, 3 World Championships, an Olympic Silver medal and countless other impressive results that, taken alone, would define a pro racer’s career. But for those lucky enough to know him, it isn’t Frischi’s unparalleled palmares that is most memorable – it is the smile underneath that look of steel on his face when he’s giving it stick and hurting everyone trying to stay on his wheel. That smile is easy to find on Thomas’ face, whether he’s on a training ride at home in Raperswil, enjoying a glass of wine grown from his vines planted in Italy (in 15 rows to commemorate each of his world championship medals), or grabbing an espresso on the corner, Frischi’s good nature shines through. 2008 was Frishchi's last year of competing on the World Cup; other duties call. The team he helped found with the goal of developing young Swiss riders into champions – Team Swisspower – realized its ultimate dreams this year when Florian Vogel won his first ever World Cup, and came 2nd in the World Championships, and Nino Schurter won his second Under 23 World Championship. Thomas will continue to work on that part of his legacy as founder and team manager of the strongest team on the World Cup XC circuit. He has a bike school in the Swiss Alps and co-owns a rider’s hotel in Tuscany, and will also continue as a product advisor to Ritchey. His training rides may become a bit less intense, but his impact on the sport will not slow down one bit. Thank you, Thomas, for all of the memorable moments on the race course and off, and good luck with the rest of your endeavors, stretched out in front of you like yet another tasty piece of trail.

Matrix™ Technology
– The Best of Both Worlds — Matrix
carbonalloy is another result of Tom’s gift for metallurgy and his untiring ingenuity. It began with the realization that carbon stems were either too
hite / light background
heavy or not strong enough, and resulted in Tom asking himself a couple of questions: How do we take a nearly perfect alloy component design, like the WCS 4-Axis stem, and improve on it? What if we could take the alloy base forms of existing alloy products, and case-harden them like you can steel? This led to the development of Ritchey’s Matrix carbonalloy. We’ve merged carbon and alloy to develop products that benefit from the characteristics of both materials. By encasing alloy in high-modulus carbon fiber, our Matrix components boast increased fatigue strength and durability, making them tougher and stiffer than carbon alone, and stronger than alloy.
LCT™ Technology – Logic Composite Technology describes Ritchey’s proprietary process for employing carbon fiber with an extremely high tensile strength which, combined with a special resin, allows us to make carbon fiber products that are even stronger and lighter than our WCS Carbon line. Used in products such as our SuperLogic Carbon Evolution and Logic II bars, LCT is the pinnacle of Ritchey carbon fiber component technology.
Ritchey Carbon — When wielded properly, carbon fiber is an ideal material for building bicycle components with strength to weight ratios that surpass all other materials. For a given product, we optimize the ideal combination of strength, stiffness, weight, and comfort, drawing on technologies like Logic Composite Technology and Matrix carbonalloy to create some of the most advanced components available. Our SuperLogic and WCS Carbon products have been race proven in rigorous conditions at the world’s most prestigious events, making them the right choice for the rider who values performance above all else.
ritchey component levels SUPERLOGIC™ – We’re proud to introduce our new component level: Ritchey SuperLogic. Representing the bleeding edge of design and material technology, the SuperLogic moniker is reserved for an extremely select group of components. From a wheelset that is so slippery that decals will slow them down, to handlebars that defy conventional thought about what strength and light weight truly mean, our SuperLogic line is set to shake up the order of things – literally.
WCS™ (World Championship Series) — Over the years, Ritchey components have carried riders to victory in countless events from the Olympics, to the World Cup, and World Championship titles. Using the latest technology and materials to create some of the world’s most trusted, high performance components, Ritchey’s WCS line sets the standard.
Pro™ — Race caliber performance without works-level prices. Top manufacturing materials, design, and processes, trickled down from our WCS technologies make our PRO line a solid choice for the serious rider.
Comp™ — These parts are often considered our ‘value’ line. That’s an acceptable way to think of them, but only if you remember the high level of design sophistication and features that go into these and all Ritchey products. Ritchey COMP will get the job done, without compromise.

What’s New for 2009
Ritchey WCS Carbon 10ºSweep Flat Bar
» SuperLogic – We’re really excited about our new SuperLogic components. This is a new level of advancement from Ritchey, and the first time we’ve released products that don’t have a price target. Performance is the absolute gold standard for SuperLogic – at any cost. Watch for SuperLogic bars, posts, and wheels in the future. » Finish options – More products than ever are being offered in our UD (Unidirectional) Carbon finish. And due to popular demand, we’re releasing our limited edition Wet White products to the public for the first time this year. » Logic II bars – Formerly only available in carbon, our Logic II bars are now also available in WCS and PRO alloy versions. Fit Logic technology is not reserved for those with big bike budgets – we believe everyone deserves to have a bike that fits properly. » 10º Flat MTB bars – Handlebar ergonomics just get better and better, and this year we’re introducing a mountain bar that should make for some very happy necks, backs, shoulders and wrists. Available in WCS carbon and alloy versions, our new 10º backswept flat bar should be a hit. » 1 Bolt seatpost – Formerly only available in carbon, our 1 bolt seatpost with SideBinder clamping technology now comes in three WCS alloy versions: 20mm offset, zero offset – the first ever Ritchey post to be offered without any offset, and an adjustable -5~25mm offset version. FitLogic just took another big step forward. » WCS Carbon Interval TT bar – Using feedback from our road teams and TT specialists, we developed a wicked new TT bar called the Interval. With 60mm of drop, all new aero profile and more bar extension options to customize hand positioning, Ritchey TT equipment continues to cut through the air for some of the world’s fastest riders against the clock. » WCS and PRO Cross forks – We have completely redesigned the WCS and expanded our fork lineup once again, adding a PRO level Cross fork, designed to shoulder up nicely against the harsh stresses of cross racing. WCS and PRO cross forks are now available in 45/50 crown sizes. » Wheels – We’re not quite ready to show them to the world yet, but we’re cooking up a batch of new wheels that will turn heads. Let’s just say we love carbon. Stay tuned… » WCS Biomax saddle – We thought we’d offer up something for those that like a saddle with relief in the middle for you sensitive types out there. With anatomical cutout and high grade materials, the BioMax saddle is sure to befriend your underside on your next epic ride.

With 2° the introduction of our Logic II line, individual characteristics are customized for each model for unprecedented fit. And now the use of Logic Composite Technology enables us to make some of our most popular shapes available in SuperLogic versions – the ultimate in lightweight performance handlebars.
superlogic carbon logic II Three widths (40, 42, 44cm) with tailored reach and drop measurements ensure unprecedented fit options.
Logic, Logic II & Classic Multiple hand positions are critical to a road bar that fits and performs properly. Modifying one position often affects the others, so different models are necessary to satisfy the individual needs of different riders. This is the foundation of Fit Logic: by providing fit options for riders of all sizes, we enable them to find a proper position on the bike, maximizing performance and enjoyment. For example, the R75 bend of our Classic bars offers a more gradual transition curve from tops to levers, providing lots of forearm clearance for sprinters and track racers. Classic bars also feature traditional, round drops. Ritchey’s R-50 Logic bend tightens the angle from tops to levers, creating 30% more space on the tops, and also features a flat section in the drops for enhanced ergonomics and braking. The R65 bend of our new Logic II series represents a middle ground between Logic and Classic. Logic II also features specific reach and drop characteristics for each width, providing an ideal shape for riders of all sizes.

ROAD pedals Tom has long been a proponent of pedal systems that are universal in function, but unique in their individual design. The WCS Peloton is DELTA™ cleat compatible, while the new WCS Echelon works with Keo™ cleats*. Tom’s PRO Micro V4 is the successful result of his quest to create a road pedal with an absolute minimalist design. All three models are designed around low-profile platforms for maximum pedaling efficiency and power transfer.

road FORKS Our carbon fork line provides comfort, precision steering and reliable performance across many cycling disciplines. Other than geometry, the key component in the performance of a fork is the blend of steering precision offered by the fork’s stiffness, and the comfort provided by the amount of compliance that is designed into it. Our forks are tuned with this combination of factors in mind; the level and intended purpose of the fork dictates whether it will be stiffer or more compliant.

Tire Rotation and the VFA™ Story
VFA Diagram ™
Vector Force Analysis (VFA™) analyzes the directional forces applied to a tire during cornering, accelerating, braking, climbing and descending. These forces vary with factors like tire pressure, rider weight, trail conditions, lean angle, etc. The combination of these and other elements produces specific vector forces that affect each individual tread knob. VFA™ is a method of analyzing these forces to understand which are most prevalent in specific conditions, enabling us to design tires with an ideal combination of knob shapes, thicknesses and spacing to optimize performance characteristics for every type of riding.
Tires experience multiple vectors during cornering, climbing and descending. The combination of these vectors results in a single vector force.
1974-2009: 35 years of The Art of High Performance
VFA™ design tread patterns follow parabolic curves for traction at every lean angle.
The tread knobs are specifically designed with supports that counteract the vector force being applied perpendicularly to the tire.
MOUNTAIN TIRES
43
Ritchey tires have won more World Cup races than any other. Our SpeedMax series consists of semi-slick designs for minimal rolling resistance, maximum acceleration and all-out speed in hardpack conditions. Our Z-Max series is based on Z.E.D. (Z-Max Evolved Design) philosophy, designed for optimal traction and handling in a variety of conditions. Our newest additions to the Ritchey WCS™ lineup build on that heritage: the Z-Max Premonition™, Intuition™ and the SpeedMax Beta™ combine new Dual Compound rubber with world cup winning Vector Force Analysis™ tread technology. The result is the next generation of tires worthy of our name.
