Twenty Fifteen Hello! So much has been happening here at Genesis over the last twelve months it’s hard to know where to start – suffice to say we’ve been busy! We’ve an armful of new projects to show you, broader ranges with improved pricing wherever we could manage, tons of new designs and colours (thanks to our ‘new for 2015’ crayon-keeper Gree), a whole new bike category or two, a ‘new for us’ frame material, some really cool tweaks on our most popular bikes and, well, hopefully something for everyone! Welcome to the new Genesis #twentyfifteen range. Albert, Sim, Gree, Ryan

Reynolds 853 (1250-1400 MPa)

The Materials Reynolds 953 (1650-1900 MPa) This is the undisputed king of the ‘Super Steels’. Stronger by some margin than any other steel tubing currently offered to the cycle industry (enabling wall thicknesses of down to a paper-thin 0.3mm), 953 is a martensitic-aging stainless steel (a heat-treated, ultra hard form of steel crystalline structure), made in very limited batches with lengthy lead times due to an immensely complex manufacturing process. 953 undergoes a ‘double vacuum re-melt’ process @ Carpenter Speciality Alloys in the US to achieve the necessary properties and purity) and made into a tube from the cold-rolled strip with a highly homogenous weld which is performed in an inert atmosphere (a specialist aerospace weld mill) and drawn into butted tubing at the Reynolds Birmingham workshop. Every step on the road to creating a 953 tube is precise and measured to super-exact tolerances. This is the cutting edge of metallurgy and science. It’s hellish for frame-builders to work with (that strength takes its’ toll on cutting dies and machinery) and takes an expert-level skilled frame-builder to produce - so much so that there are only a handful of builders worldwide able/willing to work with 953 in TIG welded format. Why do we bother? Quite simply, it produces frames unlike no other – the unsurpassed ride quality of steel in a lightweight, great looking and long-lasting package. The ultimate racing steel.

KVA MS3 (1400 MPa) This is a new kid on the block for us and our alternative to Reynolds 931 tubing for 2015. Still stainless, still heat-treated, still awesome, but a little more affordable largely because we can source the frames from a different, more competitive frame builder. KVA are a Southern Californian company, specialising in the manufacture and supply of stainless steel and high alloy welded tubing, and spearheading development of patented technologies. They’re relatively new to the cycle industry (introducing MS2 at NAHBS 2011) but have been in the automotive, aviation, gas & oil, medical, nuclear, petrochemical, train/rail for decades so you could say they’ve got a bit of experience! MS3 was introduced early in 2014, building on their award-winning MS2 Martensitic Air Hardened stainless steel tubeset but optimised for use in bicycle frame manufacture with vastly improved corrosion resistance and toughness (developed originally for aerospace landing gear applications). It’s a seamed tube (welded construction – much like Reynolds 953), made in the USA from first quality domestic stainless-steel alloys using modern forming, welding and precision thermal processing technology. These tubes are then shipped to Taiwan where they’re drawn into butted tubes with optimised variable wall thicknesses. Every part a ‘super steel’, MS3 sits right alongside XCR, 931, etc. with a tensile strength of 1400 MPa - the easiest way to visualise it would be to think of it as a stainless equivalent of Reynolds 853.

Genesis Bicycles - Model Year Twenty Fifteen

Reynolds 853 is probably the most popular and widely used of all of Reynolds’ performance-orientated steel offerings; hitting that sweet spot of performance, weight and cost. Drawn at their Birmingham workshop, 853 is a seamless, colddrawn, heat-treated chromoly with the added benefit of air-hardening properties. In layman’s terms this basically means that the material’s strength increases after welding (and cooling). This party trick comes into its’ own in the heat-affected weld area – whereas the concentrated heat zone from the welding torch weakens other chromoly tubes (arguably in an area where you need them to be strongest – at the tube joints), 853 laps up this heat, becoming stronger in the process.

Reynolds 725 (1080-1280 MPa) Reynolds 853 is probably the most popular and widely used of all of Reynolds’ performance-orientated steel offerings; hitting that sweet spot of performance, weight and cost. Drawn at their Birmingham workshop, 853 is a seamless, cold-drawn, heattreated Chromoly with the added benefit of air-hardening properties. In layman’s terms this basically means that the material’s strength increases after welding (and cooling). This party trick comes into its’ own in the heataffected weld area – whereas the concentrated heat zone from the welding torch weakens other Chromoly tubes (arguably in an area where you need them to be strongest – at the tube joints), 853 laps up this heat, becoming stronger in the process.

Mjölnir (700-900 MPa) AKA ‘Thor’s Hammer’ and pronounced ‘Myol-n(ee)r‘ our new double-butted, cold-drawn, seamless, Taiwanese chromoly tubeset also goes by the aliases of 4130, Cr-Mo and Chromo. It’s a like-for-like replacement of Reynolds 520 tubing which helps keep a lid on price without sacrificing performance. And herein lies the reason for the switch – a saving can be passed onto the consumer via either a healthy price drop or a little more room for up-speccing. We think the switch makes total sense; same weight, same great ride characteristics but a heck of a lot more bangfor-your-buck, no-brainer. genesisbikes.co.uk

Road - Performance Carbon

Zero T Zero i Zero .4 Zero .3 Zero .2 Zero .1 Zero Frameset

Since 2007 we’ve used all types of materials to make Genesis frames; steels from chromoly to Reynolds 953, alloys and beautifully practical titanium frames too. But unlike most of our contemporaries we’ve never used carbon fibre - until now. For us it’s the beginning of putting the final piece of the materials jigsaw in place; producing for 2015 our first ever carbon road frame... We’ve called it Zero. It’s inspired in part by the our Madison Genesis Team competing in longer stage races like this year’s Tour of Britain but also informed by our customers for whom the combination of a lightweight, aerodynamic and comfortable road bike, race-able and ride-able, is compelling. The sharpness and responsiveness of a race bike but friendly enough for long-ride comfort. Durability – last but not least is engineered in from the start and means every Zero, which are all produced using our own custom moulds, is supplied complete with a lifetime frame warranty. So welcome to the brand new six-bike Zero – the very first carbon fibre road bikes by Genesis.

It’s not a replica, it’s not a team paintjob on a similar looking frame, or a downgraded carbon blend from the same mould, it is the same frame, the flagship. The Zero .3 is built for the keen road enthusiast who likes their bike to look just as good as it performs. We’ve taken the beautifully balanced, lightweight, comfortable, lifetime warranty equipped Zero frame platform, applied only the most minimal of gloss black paint-jobs and dressed it in a full new 11-speed Shimano 105 groupset - arguably the best bang-forbuck components they offer. There’s something ‘right’ about properly done raw carbon road bikes and the Zero .3 proves this perfectly - form an orderly queue.

The Zero .2 is a properly thought through enthusiasts’ road bike and combines the most-popular-of-all Shimano groupsets in its brand new 11sp format with the engineered, lifetime warrantied Zero Frameset - arguably the best value bike in the Zero range. Frame

Unlike the thinking behind many carbon road offerings at this level, we’ve consciously decided not to not scrimp on the carbon grade used or cut corners on the manufacturing process to squeeze a price-point with the Genesis Zero .1. It actually sports exactly the same great lightweight, efficient and comfortable chassis along with the same piece-of-mind lifetime warranty that we offer on the range-topping Team model. The ideal choice for riders looking for a competitively priced, well balanced, quick, robust and race-worthy road machine straight out of the box. Frame

After the season the Madison Genesis Team have just had* on the Volare we no longer need to persuade people our steel frames can be raced and won against anything from the best brands in the world – that chat happened on road. For 2015 we’ve broadened the range to allow more people to enjoy the best of British Racing Steel, regardless of budget or component brand preference. We’ve included two Campagnolo-equipped models for the first time, put internal Di2 routing on most of the frames (upgrade-ready) and included a striking new KVA MS3 Stainless steel-framed Ultegra Di2 model at the top end. 853 Frameset - SRP - £899.99 The Volare 853 Frameset includes much of the same race winning DNA as the Team 953 model but is friendlier on the pocket thanks to the use of a slightly less outlandish tubeset. Only slightly less, mind! 853 is still an air-hardening seamless heat-treated steel which, while it does slice off a large chunk of the cost of the Team frame, still bears comparison with it in terms of performance. This makes 853 comfortably amongst the best value of the Reynolds performance tubesets. Using a BB86 bottom bracket shell and 44mm headtube for best power transfer and rigidity and fitted with a full carbon monocoque straight bladed ADK fork for tracking precision the Volare 853 Frameset is ready to be built with either the mechanical or electronic group of your choice.

Meet Roger Hammond

One of the most successful UK road riders of his generation, family man, and our team DS, Roger Hammond has been involved with Madison Genesis since its inception. We quiz him here on the tricky transition from rider to manager, teams plans for the season ahead and Belgian pastries… You’ve been with Madison Genesis since the team’s inception and were integral in getting the team established, has it been a steep learning curve moving from rider to manager? It has been a huge learning curve for me and continues to be so. As a rider I would just wait for the email letting me know what flight I had to catch. So long as I made it to the airport on time that was the extent of my organisational input, the rest was done for me. There are so many details, both major and minor, that I took for granted as a rider that ensure a happy and successful team that I only started discovering once I started with Madison Genesis. What would you say was your career highlight? Winning a world title in the UK What’s your favourite event? Paris Roubaix Do you think the popularity of cycling in recent years is reflected in the spectator turn out at domestic races? Definitely, 10 years ago at even the biggest races in the country the spectators were sparse. We just have to look at the Tour de France this year to see that there is a massive appetite to get out and watch bike races.

33| Genesis Bicycles - Model Year Twenty Fifteen

©TDWsport.com

©TDWsport.com

How much riding of your own do you still do? Not as much as I should be doing! What’s your favourite bit of kit? Shimano Di2

Unlike most domestic outfits, you and the team are directly involved in the development of both the team bike and team kit – is this something you think helps to solidify the close-knit nature of the squad? I definitely think it helps a lot. We are in the unique position that the team is so close to the brands supporting the team, with riders and staff having direct contact with the developers themselves. The dialogue between the riders, staff and developers does give the team another common goal other than purely race results but I also feel it integrates the team into Madison as a company too. I know the riders really appreciate seeing their suggestions being integrated into new product with a very quick turn-around. What does the off-season hold for you and the team? The riders are taking a break at the moment to recover from the long season before the build-up begins again for next year. For the staff we are fully into preparation mode for next year, setting up the team, preparing the equipment, calendar etc. Who or what is your biggest inspiration? Adri Van Der Poel, excelled at both the classics and Cyclo-Cross. Biggest indulgence? As a rider - Belgian pastries! You’ve created a youthful squad with lots of potential for future progression – is the opportunity for nurturing fresh talent something that attracted you to the role? Most certainly. I find it very rewarding to work with the younger riders, they are full of enthusiasm and eager to learn, watching their progression has given me great pleasure. I’m really looking forward to the day when I see a Madison Genesis rider competing at the highest level on television What should we expect from Madison Genesis in 2015? A great mix of riders - some remaining and some new faces - that will be exciting to watch race. Please join us for the journey! genesisbikes.co.uk

Road - Sportive Series

Equilibrium Disc Ti Equilibrium Disc Ltd Equilibrium Disc 20 Equilibrium Disc 10 Equilibrium Disc Frameset

Equilibrium Stainless Steel Equilibrium 30 Equilibrium 20 Equilibrium 10 Equilibrium Frameset

The Equilibrium series has established itself as by far our most popular series of dedicated road bikes with classic looks, 4-season practicality and all-day comfort being the hallmarks. Last year for the first time we introduced a Disc incarnation which proved to be a runaway success and meant a mini range of dedicated Disc Equilibriums for 2015 was inevitable. These are probably amongst the most desirable as well as ridable bikes in the line-up and bring modern looks and powerful all-weather stopping ability to an already eminently practical range of bikes. We rather like them! We know however that some riders will be happier with the more traditional looking caliper braked options so we’ve kept these in the line-up too matching them with some classic Campagnolo groups in a couple of cases and giving each a beautifully restrained classic look. The choice is yours.

Disc - Limited Edition - SRP - £1849.99 There are several bikes in the range that have provoked a unanimously positive response wherever they’ve been shown and the stunning Equilibrium Disc Limited is certainly one of them. It shares the same heat treated Reynolds 725 frame as the eye-catching yellow Equilibrium Disc 20 but uses the component package borrowed from the top of the line Equilibrium Disc Ti. Some say there’s a reasonable argument for bikes never being bright green but, whatever that argument is, I think it’s fair to say we’ve disproved it. It bears the Limited name because there’s only one production run - move fast! Colour

Disc - 20 - SRP - £1499.99 How do you take road hydraulic disc brakes - a technology uniquely suited to the Equilibrium line-up - and make it accessible to the masses? Given the limited range of available hydraulic disc set-ups it’s tough, but with some intelligent spec choices and a key part or two from some component manufacturers it can be done. The Equilibrium Disc 20 features the same heat treated Reynolds frame as it’s costlier big brother the Equilibrium Disc Limited, but adds TRP’s highly rated HyRd mechanical to hydraulic disc calipers and pairs them with Shimano 105 11speed mechanical STI’s to strip out much of the expense - while retaining the vast majority of the performance benefit of a hydraulic caliper set-up. We’ve managed to keep the Aksium One Disc wheelset used by the Limited and Ti models and still managed to deliver a competitive package too. Colour

Disc - 10 - SRP - £1099.99 In the Equilibrium Disc 10 we’ve produced our most accessible disc road bike bar none. We’ve used our new Mjölnir chromoly frame paired with the same newly developed carbon fibre disc fork we’ve used on the other models in the range. There’s a new Shimano Tiagra groupset with a set of TRP’s powerful Spyre C mechanical disc calipers to look after stopping duties, FSA’s 2 piece Omega chainset and a pair of Fulcrum’s excellent Racing Sport DB disc wheels finishing it all off. Outstanding performance and great value the Equilibrium Disc 10 makes for a fine first foray in disc road.

Disc - 725 Frameset - SRP - £499.99 Rounding out our road disc offering for 2015 is the Frameset option of the Equilibrium Disc series. The Frameset is the same as that found on the Limited and 20 models in terms of design and frame material (Reynolds heat treated 725 tubeset) and unlike last year’s model benefits from the addition of the newly developed carbon disc fork complete with mudguard eyelets for maximum all-season usability. 30 - SRP - £1699.99 The Equilibrium 30 combines two of the finest names in cycling history; Reynolds (est. 1923) produce the frame tubing and Campagnolo (est. 1933) manufacture the groupset. The slender Reynolds 725 frame with colour matched Pearl White carbon fork is beautifully suited to the classical lines of the 11 speed Athena groupset. Like the Stainless it’s fitted with wider profile rims and tyres and gets internal Di2 compatibility and long drop brake calipers for mudguards clearance. Timeless high-performance usability.

The 2nd Campagnolo equipped Equilibrium for 2015 is the sleek ‘phantom black’ 20. It shares the same heat treated 725 tubeset as the 30 model above but pairs up with the beautiful but economical 10 speed Veloce group. Unashamedly inspired by JPS racing colours of old the 20 makes for a fetching ride but shares similarly practical touches like the wider tyre and rim spec, rack mounts and wide gear range (50/34 x 13/29). Classic looks in a practical package. Frame

30 - SRP - £799.99 At the heart of the Volant 30 lies our brand new hybrid double-butted alloy tubeset – a clever mix of two differing grade alloys to help give us high levels of stiffness in certain areas and compliance/flex in others. The higher density 6066 downtube and chainstays provides the basis for a stiff and efficient pedalling platform, ensuring pedal power is transferred straight to the wheel, whilst the 6061 toptube, seat tube and seatstays help give and added element of compliance and comfort, acting as a nice buffer between rider and road. Perfect for the newer road rider looking for the best performance package available or the more seasoned regular to cover winter or training mileage (mudguard ready).

The new ‘Mjolnir’ double-butted, seamless chromoly tubeset opens up a little room for us to go full circle, adding back in the much-loved carbon fork that graced the original Flyer back in 2006/7; helping to drop weight and act as a nice buffer between the road and the handlebars.

An Introduction to Bikepacking

Bike Packing 101 Born on the singletrack trails traditionally unridable for the fully laden bicycle “Bikepacking” has developed into the alpinism of cycle touring. Freed from the shackles of heavy equipment the modern Bikepacker can turn the day hack into a multi-day experience. Whether it is a shared local overnight bivi with friends or an epic cross continental adventure, Bikepackers embrace the freedom the bicycle can offer. Like Alpinists, Bikepackers are gear freaks, spending hours pouring over boxes of equipment before selecting exactly the right combination for their trip. Pushing their equipment to the edge of its envelope, eliminating redundancy and finding multiple uses for items. Carrying their equipment in minimal packs and loading their bikes to have as little impact on their riding experience as possible. This has seen an explosion in rackless luggage systems, soft packs designed to utilise spaces previously thought redundant and up to 40% lighter than traditional rack and pannier systems. Lighter loads, more evenly distributed throughout the bike allows the successful bikepacker to enjoy a more natural riding experience. Do not despair if you haven’t got piles of equipment, “Fast” and “Light” were the equipment designers buzz words a few years ago and most modern kit is light enough to get you on the trails on your first adventure. Bikepacking is still in its infancy, there are no hard and fast rules telling you what kit to take and how to carry it. Think durability, there are plenty sharp pointy bits on a bike that can wear a hole in a bag in just a few minutes. Eliminate redundancy, why carry a down jacket and a 3 season sleeping bag, when you could sleep in your jacket in a 2 season bag. Bivi, get rid of the complexities and weight of a tent, enjoy the stars and wake up to the sunrise.

59| Genesis Bicycles - Model Year Twenty Fifteen

Bikepacking is all about the simplicity of the ride, enjoying and experiencing landscapes that you may have previously blasted through or simply haven’t been able to access. Spend a night in your favourite forest, spend a night on top of a mountain, bivi with friends, camp alone... only your imagination can limit your adventure. Start simple, think big. A quick nod towards safety... strapping stuff to your bike is great fun but make sure there are no straps or fixtures that could work loose and cause you an embarrassing tumble. A local sub 24 hr overnight ride, often termed a microadventure, makes the ideal test Bikepacking trip. Alpkit has been equipping Genesis riders with specialist kit and luggage since 2008. genesisbikes.co.uk

From just one model a few years back the Croix de Fer is now for the first time a bonafide range in its own right. The old CdF becomes the new Croix de Fer 10, the all-conquering Croix de Fer itself becomes the new Croix de Fer 20 and we’ve added more options above and alongside for a truly all-encompassing selection. New clearances, new colours, future proof compatibility considerations and brand new braking technologies make this new generation of Croix’s far and away our most complete yet. Meet the new Croix’s.

The Croix de Fer Stainless is the Croix range-topper and is resplendent in its brushed raw stainless steel finish. Built using US-supplied double-butted, seamed Stainless Steel, KVA MS3 has an extremely high tensile strength (1400Mpa) and unsurpassed anti-corrosive properties allowing us to use tubes drawn as thin as 0.4mm that will retain their sublime finish for many years to come. With a tubeset allowing us to optimise the frame for weight we thought it only best to match the front with the new carbon CX fork, helping drop weight further whilst keeping the generous clearances and mudguard eyelets we’ve all grown to love and expect from the CdF. Cutting edge Shimano ST-RS685 shifter units combine 11sp mechanical shifting with dedicated hydraulic braking to great effect and round off what has to be the most exclusive ‘Croix we’ve ever put together. Have something a little different in mind vs. our stock offered CdF builds? Then the Frameset option is the way to go! For 2015 we’ve added internal Di2 compatibility (alongside traditional mechanical) for those wanting to push the boat right out. Colour

Plugging the otherwise considerable gap between the CdF 20 and Stainless, the CdF 30 brings exciting, cuttingedge technology to the CdF family. When Shimano announced their new ST-RS685 shifters last year combining 11sp mechanical shifting and dedicated hydraulic braking we knew exactly where they’d be suited! Dropbar riders can now experience the power, consistent performance and industry-leading reliability of a Shimano hydraulic brake that Mtbers have enjoying for years. The upgraded carbon CX fork maintains generous clearances, mudguard compatibility and forgiving ride characteristics whilst shaving some precious grams. Equally well suited to year-round commuting on asphalt, hammering down sun baked bridleways or even exploring the world. It’s a versatile and beautiful bicycle that crosses many boundaries. Colour

The irrepressible Croix de Fer returns for another year, packing more spec and features than ever before. With a now, almost cult-like status, we were anxious not to upset the winning formula and any changes/tweaks made have been carefully considered and implemented. Geometrywise we’ve lowered the BB and lengthened the headtube for a less ‘perched’ and more accessible riding position. Spec-wise we’ve increased gear range via the 11-32T cassette, switched in a new fork with better riding, comfier curved fork blades and added TRP’s excellent HyRd disc brakes that combine cable actuation with hydraulic power to great effect together with a lighter, more aesthetically pleasing chainset. A versatile bike that won’t get bogged down in the winter months, comes into its own on anything unpaved and copes with fully-loaded cross-terrain touring in a way that few bikes can match. Our bestselling bike by a country mile affords us the volume to offer an alternative finish to the classic, monochrome CdF 20. The graphite/orange CdF ‘Limited’ will be a single stock drop that’ll be arriving in Spring 2015 – there won’t be many coming and when they’re gone, they’re gone! Largely sharing the same spec as the stock CdF 20, the polished silver Tiagra components make way for stealthy Shimano 460 parts (essentially black Tiagra level), with the bonus of a slightly higher smaller 48/34T chainset (as opposed to 50/34T) – still providing an adequately high combination whilst reducing the sizeable 16T drop from the usual 50-34T that usually requires a number of compensation shifts on the back to re-match cadence.

The CdA is all new for 2015 but both the name and the style of bike might ring a bell; there’s a reason for that! It’s the successor to the Vapour (our alloy cyclocross bike of many years) but it’s been re-tasked somewhat with the toning down of the aggressive ‘cross-specific Vapour geometry and the inclusion of multi-purpose features like more versatile tyres, wider gear ranges and provision for rear rack and full mudguards. If it’s starting to sound a little bit like an alloy framed little brother to the Croix de Fer range then you’d not be a million miles off and in fact CdA is short for Croix d’Alliage or ‘cross of alloy’. You knew it looked familiar.

Tour De Fer Tour De Fer Frameset

Caribou

Longitude Longitude Frameset

As you might’ve already deduced from our thoroughly unoriginal naming (sorry, the project name kind of stuck), the Tour de Fer uses the ever-popular tried-and-tested Croix de Fer frame platform with a few choice tweaks to transform it into a capable, new-age, disc-equipped tourer ready for duty straight from the box. It’s not that the ‘Croix can’t be used as a long distance load carrier - it’s just that we felt we could make a better bike, much more suited to the task of carrying rider and luggage over long distances in comfort. So, what’s different I hear you ask?... For starters we lengthened the chainstays (455mm) to allow for ample heel clearance with panniers. The stretched chainstays also give room to mount a handy kickstand plate behind the bottom bracket. We also beefed up the wall thickness of the downtube to improve overall rigidity and handling when fullyladen. The BB was dropped 5mm (75mm) to improve stability and balance and we also increased the fork offset to 55mm (provides a medium trail measurement of 60mm) meaning the bike handles great with a front loads but isn’t too overly twitchy without. Build-wise, we dressed the frame with durable, nononsense components that we knew from personal experience are tour/expedition worthy and should last the sorts of highmileages for which we intended; we went with a low geared, MTB-based drivetrain that gives a nice low 18.7GI climbing gear alongside a not-too-spinny 108.7GI high gear, and a whole load of useable range in between, hardy Microshift barcon shifters (rear = index/front = friction), TRP Spyre-C mechanical disc brakes and the cycle tourist’s favourite, Schwalbe Marathon 35c tyres round-off the considered, well thought through spec. Expedition-ready straight from the box – just add rider, luggage and a sense of adventure. Colour Rosso Red Dark Grey Tangerine

Off Road in Iceland

Off Road In Iceland Roads in Iceland are not like the roads you’ll find anywhere else. A road, generally, can be depended on to keep you out of whatever perils lie to either side of it (deserts, minefields, other people’s property) and to lead you reliably towards food, shelter and safety. An Icelandic road, however, depending on the season and the weather conditions in which you encounter it, will often lead you quite in the opposite direction from comfort and civilization, and certainly can’t be guaranteed to keep you on the straight and narrow – because in Iceland, very little is straight or narrow. I went to Iceland in winter – partly because I wanted to test out my new Genesis Caribou, partly because I wanted to avoid the hordes of foreign tourists who swamp the country in the summer months – and quickly discovered that all the more interesting roads (that is, those that would lead me into the deserts and mountains and glaciers and lava fields of Iceland’s interior) were closed to traffic, guarded by big red signs that said...

...ÓFÆRT IMPASSABLE This might have disheartened me, had I not been lucky enough to ask the advice of Emil, of Kría Cycles in Reykjavik. Rather than sucking his teeth and telling me how dangerous it all was, Emil took one look at my fatbike and suggested a challenging route, along a tiny mountain road called Kaldidalur (closed to traffic in winter, naturally), which skirted the edge of the highlands and cut in between two icecaps before descending into a river valley 70km to the north. Kaldidur – which translates ominously as ‘valley of the cold’ – is hidden away over a mountain pass, and once I’d struggled over the steep, icy, gravelly rim of the valley, I found another world. It was a world of blue sky and glittering white snow, of frozen lakes and jagged peaks. What I’d been told was a road in summer was now just a set of jeep tracks a few days old, the snow crisply refrozen around the edge 85| Genesis Bicycles - Model Year Twenty Fifteen

of the treads. Here and there I spotted the footprints of Arctic foxes, weaving insouciantly in and out of the tyre tracks and then heading out across the frozen landscape, towards dens hidden under the snowdrifts. After a few miles, this ghost of a road began to climb up towards a rocky plateau, and when I finally reached the top, I realized that I was standing in the middle of a lava field, an uneven desert of rocks stretching out on either side of me, towards the mountains that must originally have belched them out. The wind had swept the plateau mostly clear of snow, but the surprisingly fierce winter sunshine seemed to have melted the snow compacted by the jeep tyres – which had then refrozen, turning the road into a solid river of hard, shining ice. genesisbikes.co.uk

|86

My four-inch tyres, I found, could cope with almost any permutation of rocks and snow I chose to throw them at, but faltered when it came to ice. After several hard falls, and adding a handful of bruises to my collection (sitting in a thermal hot tub on the Reykjavik seafront a few days later, I discovered that the one on my left calf was an exact... ...replica of the topography of Iceland, with its various greens and purples marking out the mountain ranges of the interior and the striated coastline of the Westfjords) I decided to try my luck on the lava, and found to my delight that the fatbike rumbled happily over sand, gravel, and rocks that varied in size from tennis balls to beachballs. As the day wore on (and my legs wore out), the sun began to sink towards the horizon, and a brisk wind blew up – not one of the sudden hurricanes for which Iceland is famous, but a gale strong enough to push me persistently off-course, onto the increasingly frequent puddles of ice that I was trying to avoid. “Keep going Chappell”, I muttered to myself. “Keep it together.” Concentrating with every particle of my mind and body, I rolled across the gleaming blue-white expanses, relieved when my tyres broke through the ice and found a grip on the stony ground beneath. Fighting with the wind to keep the bike upright, and heading straight ahead, I pedalled steadily forward – not too fast, or I’d skid and slip; not too slow, or I’d lose my line, swerve and fall.By the time I reached the final descent, my arms were trembling all the way up to my shoulders. But my heart sang with triumph as I threw myself and the bike down the switchbacks into the icy river valley beyond, feeling fat tyres bouncing off lumpen rocks, leaning into the wind once more, letting it blow me along as I soared down the hill, past the ‘ófært/impassable’ sign and along the valley – looking forward to putting up my tent on the frozen outskirts of the village of Húsafell, cooking up a much-needed pan of baked beans and sausages, and dozing off in my sleeping bag, just as the last light of the day disappeared behind the mountains. Caribou

Longitude Longitude Frameset

Originally conceived for use on Alaskan snow ‘fatbikes’ work because of their large-volume/low-pressure tyre combo (generally 3.8”+ tyres @ 8-12psi) which provides enough floatation and traction to pedal over soft, unstable and otherwise un-passable terrain. (A.K.A. ideal for the path less travelled!) The Caribou is a little different in that it’s not tied-down to specific single-season use, and is much, much more than a pure ‘snow-bike’. The trail-orientated geometry and fat tyres in fact lend themselves well to year-round exploring, excelling equally well in typical UK riding conditions like mud, bog, wet roots and loose rock just as well as on the white stuff. For 2015 Day One makes the transition from an adventure inspired range to one more deliberately focused on city riding. We’ve done the tyre swap that 90% of Day One customers were doing in the shop and adjusted the gearing a touch to optimise the line-up for tough city and commute use. We’ve also added a V-brake model to open up the entry level model to more riders and solved the perennial freewheel wear issue by not using one and fitting cassette hubs instead! Day One the - the evolution continues.

Di2 - SRP - £1999.99 Our technology-laden showstopper features an fully internal wired, electronic shifting 8sp Alfine internal hub gear (IGH) that takes low maintenance to a whole new level! In removing the shift cable and replacing a mechanical cable pull operation with an electronic signal, we’ve effectively dealt with the IGH’s one Achilles heel - a correctly adjusted shift cable. Other upgrades include a carbon fork to help offset some of the weight in the hub and TRP’s excellent HyRd disc brakes that combine cable actuation with hydraulic power to great effect. As for charging with the battery mounted inside the seatpost? It couldn’t be easier - there’s a charge port on the handlebar-mounted junction box meaning the battery can be charged in-situ. Colour

A dependable Shimano Claris 8sp drivetrain with slightly lightened gearing makes it ideal for load-carrying urban errands and we’ve included practical touches like an integrated chainguard, a subtly swept riser bar, Shimano’s new M355 hydraulic disc brakes and fast rolling, puncture-resistant Conti Sport Contact tyres too. The perfect blend of classic, understated looks combined with the modern, dependable and top-performing componentry that we’ve all come to know and love. High Latitude 20 High Latitude 10 High Latitude Frameset

Amongst our best loved mountain bikes the High Latitude 29 platform returns new and improved for 2015. Built for discerning trail riders everywhere the High Latitudes are just as quick and fun as ever and feature some finely tuned revisions to what was already a pretty dialled ride. With two new models either side of the 2014 bike, new graphics, 100% bolt through 15mm axles, and Maxxis tyres throughout this year’s range is looking very sweet indeed. Welcome to the trailhead.

20 - SRP - £1199.99 We’ve kept the winning formula from last year’s High Latitude but added some key touches. Not least of these is a top-end X-Fusion Slide RL2 fork featuring a tapered steerer, a 15mm bolt through axle and an air spring - it’s one of the smoothest operating forks we’ve tested and to be honest you probably won’t even notice it on the trails - this is a good thing. Matched with a weight saving 2x Deore drivetrain including Shadow+ clutch rear mech and equipped with unflappable Maxxis Ardent tyres (on wide, tubeless-ready Alex Volar 2.3 rims, no less) you can see why, out of the box, the High Latitude 20 is probably the quickest hardtail in our range. The 2015 High Latitude 10 is designed for the trail rider looking to get the most out of their hard-earned without sacrificing ride quality. Key on a 29” wheel bike is front end rigidity & weight so we’ve included a QR 15mm bolt through Suntour Raidon XC-LO-R air-sprung fork for the best of both of those & paired the new Shimano Alivio 9 speed group including RD-M4000 shadow rear mech, Shimano hubs & brakes. All finished off with Maxxis Ardent tyres on wide section tubeless-ready Alex MD23 rims &, frankly, it’s quite a lot of bike. Frame Fork Headset

Mountain - 27.5”

Latitude 20 Latitude 10 Latitude Frameset

Last year’s High Latitude LT (the first steel framed 27.5” bike from Genesis) proved a runaway success so we’re back with a beefier line-up for 2015. The killer ‘in-betweener’ wheelsize delivers both excellent handling and rolling characteristics which coupled with the Genesis frame make for an excellently throw-about-able trail bike. We’ve not changed too much from that recipe except the name really; High Latitude LT becomes simply: Latitude. (We were starting to run out of space on the top tube!)

Youth Mountain Caribou 20

Designed for the use of smaller or younger riders the Col du Glandon takes its name from the peak that sits next to the Col de la Croix de Fer in the Savoie region of France. Built from aluminium for lightness and equipped with rack mounts and mudguard eyelets the Col du Glandon is, just like our Croix de Fer range, ready to explore.

Inspired by its fully grown Caribou big brother the Caribou 20” is, we think, about as much fun as it’s possible to have on a kids bike. It might not be the quickest, lightest or most practical of kids bikes in the world, granted, but its amongst the most rugged. Awesome family adventures start here.

Youth Mountain Caribou 20

Core 26 Core 24

The 26” wheel might have fallen from fashion in the adult mtb market but it’s the perfect basis for our lightweight youth hardtail. A simple 1x9 drive with optimized chainline and wide-range 11-34T cassette provides ample useable gear range but is lighter, easier to maintain and more robust. A lighter rigid fork - still plenty comfy but more importantly non-suspension corrected - replaces what are generally heavy and poor performing suspension offerings resulting in a lower BB & handlebar height and therefore more manageable proportions and confident handling. Frame Fork

- SRP - £449.99 The new Core 24 is much simplified, lighter evolution that delivers a vastly improved riding experience. An easy to operate 1x9 drive with optimized chainline and wide-range 11-34T cassette provides ample range but is lighter, easier to maintain and more robust than a 3x set up. We’ve dressed the bike in parts we know will be hardy, reliable and great performers, ensuring there’ll be life left in the bike for younger brothers or sisters. Core 24 – the sort of proper bike we all wish we could have had at their age! Frame

Geometries The detailed stuff that turns a quality tubeset into a great handling bike. Small changes in these numbers can make tangible improvements to weight distribution or handling ability, yet overall balance is more important than any one measurement alone. With a wide range of variables to play with and experience from developing different frame types, the geometry of Genesis frames is something that we spend as much time on as is necessary to tune the ride characteristics to be just the way they need to be.
