AVON EDUCATION FOUNDATION NONPROFIT HELPS STUDENTS TO BE CREATIVE, INNOVATIVE AND EXCELLENT Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
Fifteen years ago, the township was growing so fast that funding at the state level couldn’t keep up. Pam DeWeese, school board president at the time, met with teachers to ask what they could do to provide supplemental funds for the Avon schools so that beloved programs like music and art wouldn’t be cut. That’s when the Avon Education Foundation (AEF) was born. Initially, the focus was on teacher grants, and though teacher grants will never stop, through the years AEF began to focus on different areas. “If a teacher sees a child who can’t afford supplies, that teacher will
go out and buy them with their own money,” says Amanda Babinec, AEF executive director. “It’s my goal that no teacher spends a dime out of their own pocket for school supplies. We want teachers to know that they can turn to us if they have needs in their classroom.” She notes that the mission of the AEF is to provide teachers with the tools they need to be successful so that students can be creative, innovative and excellent. That’s why in the basement of the administration building, AEF has a Supply Our Schools (SOS) store that is run by work-study special-needs students at the high school. These students need a safe place to learn how to be an employee, take direction and perform tasks. Teachers can fill out an online form for the SOS store with items they need. It may be something for their classroom, or they may have noticed a student in their class who doesn’t have a backpack or school supplies. The teacher can request these items from the store, and they get delivered to the schools once per week, no questions asked. “Fast forward to March 9, 2020, when the rug was pulled out from all of us with COVID-19,” says Babinec, noting that Avon schools were the first in the nation to shut down. As the district shifted to online learning, Babinec saw that her own kids were struggling to learn at home since they didn’t have access to their school supplies. At the time, many people were not going

out to shop due to the virus. Babinec was certain that other families were floundering, too, so she reached out to Dr. Maggie Hoernemann, the Avon superintendent of schools at the time, to suggest distributing the SOS items to those kids who were most in need. The administration building was already doing a drive-through food distribution for kids on free or reduced lunch, serving 9,000 breakfasts and lunches each week. Babinec suggested that the AEF members get in the car distribution line and hand out pre-packaged school supplies.

“We flew through 100 bags in less than an hour,” Babinec says. “That was an aha moment.” Recognizing the need in the community, the members handed out more supplies the following week, and from there the wheels started turning. Now, the Saturday before school starts, the AEF hosts Supply it Forward, which is open to those on free or reduced lunch, or anyone who needs a helping hand. “I’m adamant that it’s an interactive shopping experience for the kids,” Babinec says. “It’s not us handing them a bag, hoping they like what’s in it. They get to come shop and make choices for the things they want.” The Supply it Forward event includes a resource area that has representatives from Anthem Medicaid, Hope Healthcare Services and the local food pantry. In addition, the superintendent is on hand to answer any questions people may have. Last year the AEF provided 50 teacher

grants. Plus, they received grant funds from the United Way, enabling them to give the schools $30,000 to retrofit all of the drinking fountains to include water refill stations. Throughout the year, the AEF hosts several fundraisers, including the much-loved Monte Carlo night, which they host each spring. Gentlemen over the age of 80 from the Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple get dressed up in casino costumes to run tables of blackjack, roulette, craps and poker. “They are a hoot, and they’ll teach you how to play a game,” Babinec says. “Nobody has ever come to Monte Carlo night and not had a good time.” They also partner with the local Kiwanis Club to host an annual golf outing in the fall - but there’s a twist. It’s at night, which is why it’s called Stars and Pars.

“If you want change and want to be part of the solution, you’ve got to raise your hand and do something,” Babinec says. “Besides, it’s important to teach our children to do something, and to volunteer not just for the fun parts, but also the behind-the-scenes stuff like setting up and cleaning up.” When the opportunity came up for the AEF executive director position, it was the
perfect fit for Babinec’s experience and passion. “I love the continuing trend of giving back to the schools my kids go to and the community I live in,” says Babinec, whose children are now 15, 13 and 11. “If you want to have a pulse on what’s going on with our 12 schools, AEF is a beautiful way to get involved.”

The Avon Education Foundation funds the following programs within Avon High School each year: Achieve 3000 Software Students in English lab use the Achieve 3000 program to assist with improving their reading skills. This past year, 67% of the students in that class grew their Lexile scores 20 or more points. In addition to improving students’ reading levels, the program boosts student confidence. This confidence helps to spur their academic success in all content areas. Evening of Excellence The event is a beautiful evening celebrating the top 25 graduating seniors. Students receive a commemorative plate, and invite their parents and two teachers that have made an impact in their lives to a plated dinner event. Freshman Orientation Guest speaker Keith Hawkins welcomes freshmen to the high school. Students get a chance to see the school before the first day, and are paired with mentors from the junior and senior class. Freshman orientation supports approximately 1,000 students. NHRA RACING CHAMP IS NOT SLOWING DOWN Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided by Matt Polito/Racing Perspectives
In the 1970s, Byron Hines began racing with Terry Vance at a drag strip. They started riding each other’s motorcycles and Byron, who was mechanically inclined at a young age, figured out a way to make them run quite a bit faster. After working together at a motorcycle performance shop, in 1979 the friends founded Vance & Hines Exhaust Systems, which has become a permanent structure in the motorcycle industry. As a result, Byron’s sons, Andrew and Matt, grew up around the sport of drag racing. “I’ve never known anything different - it’s ingrained in my DNA,” says Andrew Hines, who in the early 1980s spent his weekends
tinkering on motorcycles with his dad. In his youth, Hines rode motorcycles and dirt bikes but didn’t race initially. “I’d hop on anything with an engine and wheels,” he says. “I liked figuring out how to go faster and ride harder.” Hines quickly fell in love with the acceleration and agility that comes with riding a motorcycle. “It’s unparalleled in a car,” says Hines, who notes that to be able to have complete control over something that’s not very heavy is exhilarating, since the power-to-weight ratio is extreme. OCTOBER 2021
“You’d have to have a really highhorsepower car to match a motorcycle that can accelerate the way these things do,” Hines says. “Besides, you can’t do a wheelie in a car.” In the early 1990s, Byron raced professionally in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), receiving one win and the notable distinction of being the only man to ever win on a Yamaha motorcycle in the class. Hines’ older brother Matt raced from 1996 to 2002. “In his era, Matt was the best racer-rider out there, with 30 national net wins and three championships,” says Hines, who began racing professionally in 2002.
In his 19-year career, Hines has amassed an impressive number of wins. He’s a six-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion with 56 national event wins. Although Hines always loved bikes, he didn’t always have his heart set on a racing career. Growing up in Trinidad, Colorado, he excelled in the junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program in high school, where he was the top cadet commander. “I was the command sergeant major my junior year, then switched to the officer side my senior year and became a battalion commander,” says Hines, who was also a top marksman. All through school, he was torn between pursuing a military career and studying human anatomy. Ultimately, after graduating from high school in 2001, he chose to focus on the family business.
OCTOBER 2021
At the end of 2002, the Hines family decided it would be wise to move to Indiana. “Most of the stuff we were relying on was Indy car-based technology, and we were sending so many parts to the Indy area,” Hines says. There was the added benefit that twothirds of the NHRA races are based in the
Midwest. “We did the math and saved 12,000 miles a year of driving on each of the vehicles,” Hines says. “Plus, we were back in the shop a day earlier on each end of the trip.” A little over a decade ago, Hines was injured riding a motocross-style dirt bike when he came up short on a large jump and blew out both of his ankles.
“That was at a point in my career when I’d already won three championships, quite a few events and set multiple national records, so I got to thinking, ‘OK, what more do I have to prove? Do I still have a passion for doing this?’” Hines recalls. “I was feeling kind of burned out, but as soon as that injury happened, I was eager to do my next race. That told me that the passion was still there.”

A week and a half later, Hines was in Houston, Texas, where, despite the fact that he could barely walk, he won a race. In this sport, if a racer hits the wall or crosses the center line, it’s a disqualification for that round, whether it’s a qualifying run or an elimination round. One of the most difficult factors in racing a Pro Stock motorcycle other than going 200 miles per hour is getting it to go from 200 back to zero. Early this summer, while in Norwalk, Ohio, Hines had trouble with his braking and suspensions and he ended up going into the sand trap (which is technically pea gravel). “That was my first adventure down there,” Hines says. “I went in at 25 miles per hour and the bike kind of laid on its side. Physically, it was the softest landing I’d had.” Hines and his wife Tanya, who have lived in Hendricks County since 2005, have three children - Rion, 20, Declan, 11, and Gigi, 4. Indy as it provides easy access to downtown as well as the airport, which is nice since Tanya works for Delta Air Lines. Plus, when they want a nice meal, there are ample restaurant options. As for Hines’ future goals, they don’t really extend beyond his next race. “That’s how I’ve always focused my career forget about the long term and worry about the short term because the short term takes care of the long term,” he says. As he astutely points out, drag racing doesn’t care about the last corner, like on a circle track. Drag racing is about the here and now. “You’ve got one chance to get it right,” he says. “There is no next corner where you can make up for it, as you’re only on the vehicle for six or seven seconds. Though there are three Gs of acceleration, tire shake and vibration, and 200-mile-per-hour wind on your shoulder trying to rip you off the back of the motorcycle, 90% of [the sport] is mental.” Hines, 38, plans to continue racing as long as he is physically capable and still having fun. He’s also started to pass the torch on to Declan, who began his own racing career when he was 7. In the drag-racing world there are half-scale dragsters that have engines from five to 40 horsepower, based upon the age group. “We go out to Lucas Oil Raceway for testing and streetcar nights,” Hines says. “Declan participates in the Mid-West Drag Racing Series.” In four years he has progressed through three different age groups, running first at 13.9 seconds. He switched to the next age group at age 8, dropping to 11.9 seconds, and again at age 10, dropping to 8.9 seconds. “Declan loves speed, acceleration and noise,” Hines says. “After his second full run in the 8.9-second car, he was like, ‘This is slow.’ He’s definitely a product of me.”

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER A BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS Writer / Dr. Betty Fan, breast surgeon at IU Health West Hospital
YOU WILL DISCUSS TREATMENT OPTIONS.
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes in the United States. With the advancement of treatment and technology, the prognosis for breast cancer patients has improved over time, but a breast cancer diagnosis is overwhelming, and many women are left wondering what’s next.
Every woman’s breast cancer is different. If you’re being treated with surgery, your breast surgeon will review your medical records and imaging results, and then discuss your treatment options with you to help identify the best treatment plan. Depending on your specific breast cancer, treatment could include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or endocrine therapy. Your treatment plan will be individualized based on the results of your specific breast cancer, and your personal preferences.
YOU WILL HAVE A TEAM OF EXPERTS DURING YOUR TREATMENT.
After a breast cancer diagnosis, your provider will meet with you to discuss a treatment plan. A team of experts will be assigned to provide care for you during the treatment process. The team may consist of an oncology nurse navigator, a breast surgeon, your primary care provider, and any other medical professionals involved in your treatment and care process. YOU WILL HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS.
After hearing your diagnosis, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed or confused by all the information. Take some time to process the information, and as questions come to mind, write them down to ask during your next visit. Asking questions is important for understanding your diagnosis.
YOU’LL WANT SUPPORT.
It’s important to remember that you’re not the only one going through this journey. Joining an in-person or virtual support group can help you cope with your new cancer diagnosis. FOLLOW UP VISITS WITH YOUR DOCTOR.
Follow up visits with your breast surgeon are necessary and vital after finishing your treatment. During these visits, your physician will check to see if there are any signs of cancer recurrence, treat any side effects, and observe your overall health. As you continue to be cancer-free, your follow up appointments will be scheduled less often.

SHELTERING WINGS HOW YOU CAN RAISE AWARENESS Story Provided
October is here! For us at Sheltering Wings, this means a greater opportunity to share with our community what awareness and prevention of domestic violence looks like and how everyone plays a role! From a declaration of our county commissioners, to people wearing purple to show their support of survivors, and so much more in between! However, there is a part of me that wishes to fast forward 20 years to see if the methods of awareness and prevention are working. While I know this isn’t possible, I do know that it is working! We just have to be patient and keep motivating each other to keep at the good work we are doing. The awareness and prevention of domestic violence go hand in hand. We can’t prevent what we aren’t aware of, but awareness alone won’t equip us to act (or react) properly. Raising awareness about domestic violence includes educating people about how to recognize and act against abuse, and making help accessible to survivors. Preventing abuse includes eliminating factors that contribute to abuse. This means creating protective environments in schools, workplaces and communities, as well as engaging men as allies and teaching parents, adults and young people the skills they need
for healthy relationships! At Sheltering Wings, we are working to do a combination of both of these and we need your help as a community because it doesn’t have to be this way.
relationships, and businesses don’t have to be unprepared for domestic violence to enter the workplace. It doesn’t have to be this way. Use our many resources, training and educational materials to prevent abuse from starting or happening again.
The coming month of awareness and prevention reminds us that domestic violence doesn’t have to be part of life. Family members don’t have to wonder how they can help, parents don’t have to guess at how to help their kids navigate
In October you can help raise awareness by: • Attending one of our training sessions, or encourage your church, workplace or school to host one! • Sharing accurate information via our social media posts!

We want the coming month of awareness and prevention (along with every month!) to be a reminder that it doesn’t have to be this way. Victims of abuse don’t have to hide in isolation, family members don’t have to wonder how they can help, parents don’t have to guess at how to help their kids navigate their relationships, and businesses don’t have to say someone else will help them. also want to reach the ladies who want to clear out their closets,” Pineda says.
For nearly a decade, Style Threads Resale & Boutique has been selling good-as-new apparel that represents the latest trends in everyday casual wear. The owners curate name-brand ladies clothing, shoes, handbags, accessories and jewelry from the best closets in Hendricks and surrounding counties.
To make that task seamless, consignments are taken Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays by appointment. Pineda is looking to buy name-brand ladies items that are no more than three years old, so that they are still in style. The items should be freshly laundered, in new or like-new condition, and may be brought in on hangers or neatly folded and placed in a laundry basket or tote. Consignors can drop off their clothes for review, and Pineda will either give items back that do not meet their standards, or pass them on to one of the local nonprofits that she partners with, such as the Lynhurst Community Center and House of Prayers Ministries.
For eight years, Suzy Pineda ran Suzy’s Consign & Resale in Avon. In 2015, her daughter Tiffany Wallace joined the business, adding the boutique side of the store, which carries all new items. In February of 2021, the mother-daughter duo relocated their business to a new, 3,200-square-foot location off of Highway 36 in the same location as Danny’s Mexican Ice Cream and AT&T. Though the location is new and the owners have rebranded, it’s the same location owned by the mother-daughter duo that was voted Best Consignment Store in Hendricks County by the Hendricks County Flyer. Those who don’t follow social media or receive emails may have assumed the business closed, but it is still here and going strong, carrying everyday casual and business-casual clothing in sizes from extra small through plus-size 3X. In her work, Pineda aims to serve two demographics - the buyers and the sellers.
The owners recently started accepting home goods such as small side tables, wall art, knickknacks, throw blankets, decorative candles, vases, small mirrors, and serving trays. All must be in excellent condition and under five years old. “What sets us apart is that we get to know our customers by name and learn their likes, dislikes and style choices,” says Pineda, a lifelong Hendricks County resident. “We’re personal with our customers.” Though COVID-19 has been a challenge, especially for small businesses, Pineda and Wallace have weathered the storm.
“I want to reach the ladies who are shopping “We were closed for seven and a half for good, quality name-brand items, but I weeks, but thankfully our consigners and 30 / AVON MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com
customers supported us through that,” says Pineda, who began doing porch pickups as well as weekly Facebook Live sales during the pandemic. “It was important to think outside the box on how to keep inventory and revenue coming in.” She continues to do Facebook Live sales on Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m. (search for Style Threads Resale on Facebook). The virtual shopping experience is ideal for working moms or those who are uncomfortable shopping in stores right now.
Maurices, Kate Spade, COACH and Michael Kors, as well as brands from local boutiques. Other brands include Chico’s, INC, Style & Co, TJ Maxx and more.
Nothing makes Pineda feel better than when someone walks out of the store with a bag full of clothing, having only spent perhaps $50.
“Normally, I have anywhere between 18 and 40 women watch when I go live and shop,” says Pineda, who stands in front of a bright light describing the apparel.
“We really do have something for everyone,” Pineda says. “It’s a new store every time you come in because inventory is constantly changing.”
“They are thrilled because they got namebrand stuff at a fraction of the cost, and I’m thrilled that they are so happy,” Pineda says.
For example, she might say, “This is a LOFT short-sleeved top, navy blue, slim fit, size medium, 100% cotton, so it’ll keep you cool. It’s $12.99, but look - it’s got tags attached and is brand new, so it’s a $39 shirt that you’re going to get for $12.99.”
On the consignment side, Pineda adds 100 to 300 items daily to the sales floor. The boutique gets new arrivals weekly, consisting of the latest style trends. New items in Wallace’s boutique are always on Instagram under Style Threads Boutique.
Prices range widely, since Pineda sells ballet flats from Target for $8 all the way up to Louis Vuitton purses for $2,000. The average piece of women’s clothing, however, is between $10 and $16. Prices are at least 50% to 90% off of retail. The top-selling brands include LOFT, White House Black Market,

a DJ spins tunes, the American Legion representatives prepare food, and Avon Police Department officers offer K-9 demonstrations. One of the biggest draws of the event is the witches. Each year, 15 to 20 volunteers dress up as witches in elaborate costumes. They strap broomsticks to their bikes, and ride and dance to music. “The kids are mesmerized by the witches,” says Tiffany Bates, owner of Rebel Studio and founder of the event. “They love interacting with them and getting their pictures taken with them. The costumes are amazing.” This year there will be “Witchy Wailing,” lip-sync karaoke performances throughout the event by the witches themselves. The Avon-Washington

Township Public Library will set up to read spooky stories to children, and there will also be a cake walk and scavenger hunts. When Bates opened Rebel Studio, she felt passionate about supporting her community. She has done many types of fundraisers since opening in May of 2019 including food drives, school supply drives, foster family sponsorships, and support for veterans programs.

“We’re all animal lovers, and last year we raised money specifically for helping with the costs of vet surgery for an officer in the K-9 unit,” Bates says. “This year we’re already ahead of the goal we set, thanks to a generous donation from a local RE/ MAX office, and it will go to support the needs of the K-9 unit in general.” The first Witch’s Ride took place in October of 2019. It was a last-minute idea, and Bates was happily surprised to have 650 people show up. They even ran out of candy. COVID has thrown off attendance, but she’s still looking forward to a great, well-attended event his year. The event will be held on October 23 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Avon Town Hall Park. Bates is still accepting volunteers for witches, and also offering booth space for businesses. Booth space comes with a $25 donation, and businesses are responsible for decorating their space and providing candy to pass out. There is also a trophy for the best-dressed booth or trunk.

Three reasons why a mammogram is an important part of your preventive health
1
A mammogram can save your life. Early detection of breast cancer can increase a woman’s five-year survival rate to 97%.
2
It doesn’t take much time. Mammograms are a quick procedure, only taking about 20 minutes.
3
Your risk of developing breast cancer increases as you age. The older you get, the more you are at risk of developing breast cancer. That’s why mammograms aren’t a one-and-done test.
Mammograms are vital to your health and longevity as a woman. Indiana University Health recommends routine screening mammography to improve the likelihood of detecting breast cancer early. If you have specific questions about your level of risk for breast cancer, schedule an appointment with your primary care provider.
Schedule and complete your mammogram during the month of October and receive this pink Campfire Mug.* Schedule your mammogram today. Call 317.217.3272.
Our Safe Care Pledge Rest assured your safety is our utmost priority. At IU Health, we want to assure you that we are taking thoughtful steps to make sure our spaces remain safe for everyone. How we’re keeping you safe at each IU Health care facility:
