BOONE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRESENTS LINCOLN’S LEBANON
Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided Fans of President Abraham Lincoln will thoroughly enjoy the Boone County Historical Society’s upcoming free Lincoln’s Lebanon event, including a Civil War re-enactment. The event will be held on September 24 and 25 at Memorial Park.
The event will include actors in roles for Lincoln, General Robert E. Lee, a mortician, a physician and a blacksmith, as well as medical demonstrations.
PUTTING ON THE PAST
Hammock says the Boone County Historical Society has been organizing the event for 14 years. The Boone County Historical Society receives all funds for the event from
“Wedonations.donot charge our vendors and we pay for the soldiers, cannons, impersonators and demonstrators, although at a small fee,” Hammock says. “The local Zonta Club serves meals so another nonprofit in town is allowed to raise funds.”
For the next 10 days he made stops in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. “He stopped in Zionsville and Lebanon and gave short talks from the back of his railroad car,” Hammock says. “On the evening of February 11, 1861, the train made a stop at South Lebanon Street where Lincoln addressed Boone County residents. The premise of our event is great. What if Lincoln had gotten off the train, traveled north to a field, and visited with Boone County residents talking about the upcoming events, especially since states had started to secede from the union?”
For more information, call the Boone County Historical Society at 765-483-9414 or go to boonecountyhistorical.org.
The Lincoln actor will have a debate with the actor playing Lee. Battles will occur at 2 p.m. each day of the event, with live cannon fire.

“Our Mr. Lincoln, who does not break character, arrives at the historical marker on South Lebanon Street for a photo op,” Hammock says. “Then he boards a horsedrawn carriage for his ride to Memorial Park. There he greets the citizens and gives a brief speech.”
A band will play during the two-day event as well as the camp dance. “The Christian Commission has a church service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, September 25,” Hammock says.
“The Catholic service is done in the Union camp. We hope to have Lebanon citizens participate in the church services. Notices will be sent to local churches.”
“The historical society members organize the event, and are there all weekend emptying trash, registering soldiers, distributing ice for the soldiers’ food, setting up sound systems and selling our historical books,” Hammock says.
Jane Hammock, a member of the Boone County Historical Society board, says the event is built around a unique premise. “It is a Civil War re-enactment based on the premise of when Lincoln stopped at the railroad crossing in Lebanon,” Hammock says. On the way to his inauguration, Lincoln left Springfield, Illinois, on February 11, 1861, with family, friends, his valet and a bodyguard. “He gave a farewell address in Springfield before leaving, as he knew with the state of the union, he might be killed,” Hammock says.
The Brookshire Charitable Foundation has been the society’s presenting sponsor for several years and is their biggest contributor.
“A funeral is held after the first battle and a camp dance is held on Saturday night,” Hammock says. “On Sunday we will feature a church service and the second battle. During the battles, soldiers fire their weapons and some of them will act like they are dying during the battle. One of the soldiers who passes during the battle has his funeral afterward.”

As the corporate interior designer for CarDon & Associates, a Bloomington, Ind.based senior living community management company, Maria designs living spaces to appeal across generations and accommodate people who are downsizing.
MAINTAINING SMOOTH FLOORING THROUGHOUT THE HOME Doing away with rugs not only prevents trips and falls, but maintaining the same flooring height and creating smooth transitions from hardwood or tile to carpet make living spaces feel more open and free flowing.
Maria also makes residents feel at home by including familiar household staples throughout CarDon’s communities.
“When you transition to an apartmentstyle life, you might think you’re missing out on your old household items and luxuries, but you can still enjoy them in the amenity spaces around you,” she said. “For example, let’s say you had a piano in your house — you might walk down the hall from your apartment and find one in the activity room. In the Memory Care unit of our Altenheim community, residents have a multifunctional theater area right outside of their rooms where they can watch their favorite movies and shows on a large TV as well as play card games and engage in other fun activities. So, it’s like a living room — they just have to take a little trip to get Mariathere!”often finds herself taking trips to many different CarDon communities, which is why the organization is gearing up to showcase her ventures on a regular basis through social media.
“My job is a bit tricky because it requires mixing a traditional, older feel with a modern aesthetic.”
“It’s all about putting different pieces together and making sure they fit,” she said.
To allow seniors the smoothest transition possible from a larger house to an assisted or independent living apartment, Maria starts with safety in mind. These are a few steps she makes sure are included during construction:
Story Provided Interior designer Maria Ramirez takes the same approach to homes that she took to the puzzles she spent hours building in her room as a little girl.
SENIOR LIVING DESIGNER MAKES DIFFERENT PIECES FIT
Home-A-Rama Home-A-Rama
“A lot of people who are downsizing get scared that they won’t be able to fit everything they want,” she said. “But I create spaces where they don’t have to cram everything in or get rid of their most cherished keepsakes.”
INSTALLING GRAB BARS
BRIGHTENING THINGS UP Vibrant lights and colors generally make spaces appear bigger. These elements are also essential for the aging eyes of CarDon’s residents. That’s why Maria suggests optimal overhead lighting as well as reading lamps and floor lamps. A modern color palette is also more appealing to younger generations who may be looking for senior living options to fit their loved ones’ needs.
These are especially important for helping residents maintain balance in the bathroom and shower.
As she said: “We thought this would be a fun way to let staff and residents know, ‘Here’s where Maria is this week,’ and for me to say, ‘Hey, I’m coming your way and working to enhance the spaces where we all live, work and play.’”

Traditional commercial or residential developers see properties with terrain changes, sprawling woods and rolling hills, and often shake their heads, opting instead to build on flat fields. The team at Henke Development Group, however, seek out such properties because they are both beautiful and unique. That’s precisely what they’ve done at The Club at Chatham Hills, a private, residential golf course community in Westfield that offers unique topography of creeks, rolling hills, woods, lakes, and two Pete Dye-designed golf courses (the nine-hole Executive Course and 18-hole Championship Course).
“We approach every project from a personal standpoint, asking who is going to be living at a certain development - empty nesters?

People with young families?” says Betsy Garfield, co-founder of Henke Development Group, who runs the company with her father Steve and brother Brad. The answers to those questions drive the amenities, which Henke heavily invests in. The Club at Chatham Hills includes amenities that are unheard of in traditional club settings. For instance, the 65,000-square-foot clubhouse includes a four-lane bowling alley, two-story fitness center with a spin studio, tennis facilities, indoor pool, and outdoor pool with cabanas as well as a swim-up bar (the only one in the state). They took it a step further by considering seasonality and included a sledding hill, bonfire pits, and pop-up igloos for winter dining. In addition, the clubhouse has two restaurants. Chats on the Hill boasts yummy breakfast offerings such as made-to-order omelets, avocado toast, chorizo breakfast burritos, fresh fruit and granola. Lunch and dinner items include burgers, nachos, wings, wraps and fresh salads. Hamilton’s Bar & Grille, an upscale sports bar, offers Chilean sea bass, rib eye, pastas and vegan

When they reviewed options, however, they decided against adding the features to the existing home, and instead opted to work with Carrington Homes on its 2022 HomeA-Rama home, where the features would be built into their plans.
Andre and Erica Porter had been considering adding a pool and other features that their kids would enjoy to their existing 2018 Home-A-Rama home.
“In addition to the new features, we were drawn in by the unique floor plan and the fantastic tree-lined view of the golf course from the backyard,” Erica Porter says. “Of course we were pleased to find the new home opportunity in Chatham Hills as we
“It goes back to us thinking about how our residents spend their days,” Garfield says. “We have busy families with kids involved in travel sports, and they love being two minutes from Grand Park and also being able to meet neighbors at the club for lunch. We also have grandparents who bring their grandchildren here to go swimming.”
It’s not unusual for people to choose to relocate to be closer to grandkids. Garfield has seen a spike in this population, particularly following COVID-19.

In September, Chatham Hills will host Home-A-Rama for the third time. This year’s event features seven elite homebuilders - Wedgewood Building Company, Old Town Design Group, Sigma Builders, Christopher Scott Homes, Carrington Homes, BBG Construction, and Scott Campbell Custom Homes. These $2 million homes are between 5,500 and 8,200 square feet. Though most are already sold, a couple of lots are still available.
“We are frequently asked if everybody who lives here golfs, and the answer is no,” Garfield says. “Only about 40% of our residents on our courses are golf members.” These lots are highly desirable for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the breathtaking view. This year’s show is making its third and final appearance in Westfield’s Chatham Hills neighborhood and will be held Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 8:00 p.m. between September 22 and October 9.

“The thing that really made me fall in love with it was playing Wiffle ball in my front yard with my neighbors,” Storen says. That’s also where he first discovered pitching. “I had some older neighbors that were bigger than me, so it was a fun way to kind of get at them a little bit,” he says. “I love that competitiveness of owning the ball and trying to embarrass them.”
Writer / Ryan Kennedy Photographer / Jon Ellegood Drew Storen fell in love with the game of baseball at a young age. His dad had him switchhitting off a tee at the age of 1. He played tee-ball and Little League anywhere he could.
Storen still remembers the first time he ever pitched in a real game. “I was like 8,” he says. “It was such an adrenaline rush. I had a couple years under my belt of playing in the field and that was fun, but it wasn’t anything like being out on the mound.”

the role of relief pitcher. “I would come in in big spots and throw multiple innings, and that first game I went in and the adrenaline of that was just like, ‘OK, this is what I’m made for. It doesn’t get any better than this,’” he says. “I just fell in love with that.” Storen was drafted out of Stanford by the Washington Nationals. He says he wasn’t even nervous during his Major League debut. “I really wasn’t because I had no idea what was going on,” he says. “It was just sensory overload, and it was so big and so many people that it really wasn’t possible to be nervous because I had no idea what to be nervous about.”
AHAVINGBALL DREW STOREN FINDS PLENTY TO STAY EXCITED ABOUT AFTER PRO BASEBALL CAREER
As Storen grew, he started throwing harder. Initially just hoping to walk on at Purdue, he started to garner significant interest from colleges. Around his junior year, professional scouts approached him and he started to believe he might be able to play baseball professionally. He chose to play at heUniversity,Stanfordwheretransitionedto
He also says it’s nice to have a way to stay around the game of Storenbaseball.says the most important thing he can teach to young players is process and routine. He tries to teach players how to prepare the right way. That’s how you make it to the next level, he says - focusing on one thing to get better at each day.

AWESOME.”—DREWSTOREN
Storen knew when he was done playing baseball that he would need something to pursue, so he decided to get into the bourbon business. A longtime collector of bourbon, Storen says the thing that always attracts him to a bottle of bourbon, more than anything else, is a good story. As he thought about it, Storen kept coming back to two things - baseball and corn. A beverage has to be 51% corn in order to be considered bourbon. He decided to turn to what he calls the most famous corn in the world - the cornfield where the movie “Field of Dreams,” one of the most famous baseball stories ever told, was filmed. Storen called the owner of the field and offered to buy all the corn he had. Triple Play bourbon was born. The drink is 5.43% alcohol, a play on the numerical symbol for the most common triple play in baseball, and 162 calories, representing the number of games in a Major League Baseball season. Triple Play will debut exclusively in Indiana next year.
Storen played eight years in the major leagues for the Nationals, the Reds, the Mariners and the Blue Jays. When his playing career was over, he wasn’t done with baseball yet. Storen’s former coach, Jered Moore, reached out to him and asked if he’d be willing to help out with Zionsville Community High School’s baseball program. Storen says he’s always enjoyed coaching and helping out, even when he was playing. He took Moore up on his “It’soffer.a really good group of kids that listen,” Storen says. “It was really fun to see the progress and be able to go there because I was very lucky to have good coaches that helped me fast-track to the big leagues, or get to that next step and improve. If I can give one little piece of advice to a kid that helps them out, even if it’s just to get a guy out, the reward for that is pretty awesome.”

For the second year in a row, the White River Alliance produced a citywide art exhibit that featured hand-painted canoes in anchor locations along the city’s waterways.
“I’m not a painter by nature,” Reinhart says. “I always loved and did art on the side. I used to canoe along the White River, and also other types of outdoor things. I loved the concept, applied and got started. There are also 14 other artists who got to paint them. Their canoes, as well as their canoe locations, are on the White River Alliance’s website.”
Local water is not only the primary component used to make everything from coffee to soda, but it is also used for equipment sanitation and is needed for energy usage during manufacturing processes.
The project, known as White River Art Canoes, was created to raise awareness of recent reinvestment and reinvigoration of Indiana’s waterways. Boone County resident Melanie Reinhart was one of the 15 featured artists who had an opportunity to design an upcycled canoe, graciously donated by the White River Canoe Company.
Consolidated’s Indianapolis bottling facility, the canoe painted by Reinhart serves as a poignant reminder of the many ways in which the community’s waterways are used.
The Hoosier State has a problem. Within the last four years the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, the primary body in charge of monitoring water quality across the state, has determined that inadequate treatment of human sewage presents severe problems with providing adequate drinking water to its citizens. With a rapidly growing population, the state faces an uphill battle that will take a community to Withconquer.growing concerns about water pollution and toxicity in the community’s rivers and streams, residents are taking initiative and rising to the challenge by creating and promoting the White River Alliance, a group focused on the preservation and protection of local water resources.
Two silhouettes connecting arms are painted in the center. The focal point of the canoe acts as a reminder to residents that it takes unity to make an impact. A proactive attitude toward conservation is a way for residents to lead by example, while educating the community about the ways residents can take action to protect the health and cleanliness of waterways.
WHITE RIVER ALLIANCE PRODUCES CITYWIDE CANOE ART EXHIBIT
“I really want people to learn about what’s going on around us, and there’s a new podcast, ‘The Collective Tap: Conversations About Water,’ that [the White River Alliance] created, which has a lot of information for people to learn about,” Reinhart says. “It’s available on Spotify,
“My assignment was to paint a canoe centered around beverage and industry water,” she continues. “Sitting and painting that canoe really gave me a chance to think about the way we use water. I learned about how it’s essential for production and how important it really is to our everyday lives.”

The canoe’s visually inviting color blend features a base of warm orange and yellow, which adds depth and contrast to the dark cityscape painted across the canoe.
Waves of Expression
“I tried to use bright colors as well as the cityscape,” Reinhart says. “I wanted to paint something that people enjoyed looking at.”
