THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF BOONE COUNTY

102 North Lebanon Street, Suite 200 Lebanon, IN

in Zionsville. Every year this award recognizes someone who has made an ongoing commitment to Zionsville youth sports. The nomination form is open to the community to submit nominations. The CFBC grants committee reviews all applications, and determines the recipient, who then pays it forward by selecting a nonprofit organization that benefits youth sports in the community to receive an unrestricted grant.

Year after year, it is demonstrated how blessed Zionsville is to have so many wonderful people pouring into our local youth through the several nominations received for this award. This will be the 21st award from the Lionel Dubay Youth Sports Award, resulting in $8,000 being injected into Zionsville youth sports, in honor of Dubay.

Story & Photography Provided by the Community Foundation of Boone County

As Dubay was involved in starting peewee football, it is only fitting that the recipient of the 2023 Lionel Dubay Youth Sports Award is Andrew Manna.

The Community Foundation of Boone County (CFBC) is honored to name Andrew Manna as the recipient of the Lionel Dubay Youth Sports Award. This award was established in 1993 by Dubay’s wife, Gwen, his friends, and community donations to continue his legacy. Dubay was a vital parent and supporter of youth sports in Zionsville. He was an active member of multiple sports organizations including Little League and Youth Soccer Association, and was instrumental in starting peewee football

Manna has held numerous positions with Zionsville Youth Football League (ZYFL), including: •ZYFL recreational football coach •ZYFL all-star football coach •ZYFL board member •ZYFL board president •Zionsville Middle School all-star coach •ZYFL Middle School and High School

community football coordinator •ZYFL board consultant Zionsville is lucky to count Manna as one of its many servant leaders working toward providing a positive and foundational experience to all youth athletes. Manna has modeled the way so clearly for all who follow in his footsteps, allowing each of us to achieve more. Because of him, we can cheer louder, throw farther, block better and score more. But more than that, we can call ourselves one team. One Zionsville. One football town. We are lucky to nominate him. Outside of listing his roles, quantifying Manna’s contributions to the Zionsville youth sports community and ZYFL over the last decade is difficult. When asked, his nominators overwhelmingly focused on the unity and strength he has brought to every aspect of “football town.” “Through his efforts and the ongoing work of the ZYFL organization, the ZYFL program has experienced unprecedented growth in participation numbers,” says Tyson Clemmer, ZYFL board member and former ZYFL treasurer. Manna has chosen to award the $500 grant from the Lionel Dubay Youth Sports Award to the Zionsville Football Club (formerly ZYFL). In addition, Manna’s name will be added to the plaques honoring all recipients of this award, which are hung in Zionsville Town Hall.

CARING BEYOND COMMUNITY WALLS hen CarDon & Associates highlights its “communities,” the organization is not only calling attention to its senior living campuses but to their surrounding towns and global sense of fellowship as well. CarDon cares for communities beyond its own — from neighborhoods just across the street all the way down to exotic locales like Guatemala. Paoli Health & Living, CarDon’s community in Paoli, Indiana, just recently added a service to its meal delivery program for a nearby senior housing complex. Now, in addition to delivering meals every Wednesday, CarDon staffers are hosting monthly cookouts in the complex’s courtyard. “What started out as a program to meet the nutritional needs of this vulnerable group turned into so much more,” said Paoli’s Clinical Liaison Sandra Hatton. “Seniors are greeted with a smile, a hot meal and a care check to make sure they are doing okay. They started out as our neighbors and are now part of our family.” CarDon’s family serves people on the other side of the age spectrum as well. Solarbron, CarDon’s Evansville community, serves as a sponsor of the Tri-State BackPack Hero program in an effort to provide nutritious meals to local students throughout the school year. The program gives free bagged meals to students K-12 on the Friday of each school week to feed them over the weekend. They also receive these food bags through holidays and summer break. “Healthy aging starts when we’re young, so this partnership gives us an opportunity to invest in our youth in a tangible way,” said Solarbron’s Director of Residential Marketing Ashley Mayo. “A full belly makes for a focused student, which leads to a better education experience and healthier life choices. So, by the time they’re walking through our senior living doors, they’ve lived a long and healthy life and are ready to enjoy all they’ve worked toward. It’s a simple effort but a vital part of a healthy community.”

2023 marks the third year Solarbron has hosted the “Lemonade Stand fundraiser” to support the efforts of the Isaiah 117 House, which provides loving homes and everyday needs for children across the country as they await foster care placement. A Solarbron resident’s great-grandson informed the community about this cause when he was just seven years old. “He designs the flyers for our site each year and gives a presentation to our residents,” Mayo said. “This fundraiser is a great opportunity to unite the generations and raise money for a worthy cause. The slogan is ‘Love, you’re not alone.’ The mission is to let each child who stays at Isaiah 117 House know they’re loved and not alone in what can be a difficult situation. Love transcends generations, making this a universally appealing event for our residents, staff and community.” Love transcends borders as well, as evidenced by a CarDon team member’s recent efforts in Guatemala. On a Friday that would have normally found CarDon Chief Growth Officer Kendra Fauth-Edwards delivering meals for Hamilton County Meals on Wheels, she and her family were delivering meals to seniors in Guatemala. They joined the philanthropic traveling group The Village Experience in this effort. “If you know me well, you know how passionate I am about serving seniors,” Fauth-Edwards said. “I love what I do, so this opportunity was extra special.” THE LANGUAGE BARRIER WAS VERY REAL, BUT LOVE IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE.” At the end of the day, whether it’s serving senior living residents across Indiana, helping children around the nation or caring for people outside the U.S., CarDon is simply about “family caring for family.”

SEEING THINGS CLEARLY ZIONSVILLE LIONS CLUB CONTINUES TO ASSIST IN SCHOOL VISION SCREENINGS Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Vision screening for 15,000 students takes a lot of time and commitment from volunteers. Just ask Dan Dumbauld with the Zionsville Lions Club. “We do eye screening in Boone County and the surrounding areas,” Dumbauld says. “It’s a great way to help all the nurses in the schools. Nurses do eye screenings when they can, but it can take them several weeks. The Lions keep busy helping them. For instance, yesterday we eye screened 700 kids with two nurses. They were very grateful for the help.” Dumbauld notes that the speed and efficiency of the Lions in helping with eye screening has worked out for a lot of different people. “There are five reasons for this,” Dumbauld says. “First, there are a lot of people who care about the program. Second, it’s the

credibility of the program. Third, it’s the accuracy of the tests. Fourth, it’s the speed. Fifth, it’s that we continued doing screening during COVID with safety shields and Plexiglass. We use a screening device with a safety protocol.”

Noblesville Lions, 13 Westfield Lions, 25 Carmel Lions, a few volunteers from the Lizton Lions Club, the Lucerne club, the Lebanon Lions Club, the Plainfield Lions Club, and some volunteers from the Young America group.”

Dumbauld adds that the safety measures have been very effective for everyone involved. “You want to be safe when you bring older people into a school where several kids might have the flu,” Dumbauld says.

Dumbauld notes that there is a lot of intraclub involvement in the vision screening process.

The Zionsville Lions Club and the groups that help them have made a positive impact in several communities with the vision screening program. “We will enter 60 schools this school year with the vision screening,” Dumbauld says. “We have 18 Zionsville community volunteers, 37 Zionsville Lions, 22

“This is very unusual,” he says of the undertaking. “We work with 15,000 kids who are getting their vision checked. The Zionsville Lions manages all of it.” Dumbauld says the Zionsville Lions Club has a strong relationship with Ascension St. Vincent during the vision screening process. “The nurses for the schools are contracted by Ascension St. Vincent,” he says. “It used to cost the taxpayers a lot of money to get

the vision screenings done at the schools. The vision screenings done by the Zionsville Lions Club really save everyone a lot of money. It’s attractive to the school principals and the school corporations because of the money saved.” Dumbauld notes that the tests are very accurate. “We engaged the Optec 5000 eye screening to do the vision tests,” he says. “It is great for speed and accuracy. The Zionsville Lions Club does a training program for volunteers doing the testing in July. It gets them ready for the vision screenings in the fall.” Dumbauld praises the number of people involved in the screenings. “The significance of the program is that we work with nurses, teachers and numerous volunteers,” he says. “We also have several optometrists involved. We have optometrists from Zionsville, Lebanon, Westfield and Logansport. We will also have some optometrists from Carmel involved soon. The Zionsville Lions Club forms partnerships with these optometrists so they can provide agreedupon fees on frames, glasses and exams. All these partnerships are important to us.”

Ranked #1 in Indiana for Total Joint Replacement

Dumbauld says the Zionsville Lions Club started the vision screening program in 2017. “We started out screening 2,500 kids,” Dumbauld says. “The program has grown every year. It gets a lot of attention. We screen for first-graders, third-graders, fifth-graders and eighth-graders. Kids today need all the help they can get in school.” “The alarming failure rate for first-graders today is 13%,” he adds. “It’s 10% for thirdgraders, 9% for fifth-graders and 12% for eighth-graders. It’s very tragic. The vision testing helps them see better in the classroom.”

Whether it’s a prime steak prepared just the way you like it, or an East Coast feast of seafresh lobster and oysters, the dining choices in Boone County continue to grow. “We’re excited about the many locally owned restaurants that have opened lately throughout Boone County,” says Boone County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) Executive Director Allyson Gutwein. “Along with our longtime favorite restaurants, there are now more delicious cuisine choices to experience.” Zionsville has welcomed four new dining locations to their already impressive selection of restaurants. Entertaining for the Holidays MOODY’S BUTCHER SHOP HAS YOUR HOLIDAY HANKERINGS HANDLED Writer / Erik Risman, Moody’s Foodie Photographer / Michaela Marshall

16 / BOONE COUNTY MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2023 / TownePost.com

T

he holidays are just around the corner - snowflakes in the air, holiday cheer, family festivities. That’s what the holidays are all about: family, friends, entertaining, and beautiful and bountiful table settings. Moody’s is here to help make your gatherings a spectacular success, and whether it’s a delicious holiday meal with all the trimmings or a holiday party, Moody’s can help with the planning, the stress relief and the fun. Embedded in this article you will find links to our favorite recipes. Thanksgiving is a huge family day - almost 50 million turkeys are consumed. At Moody’s, we’ve been offering the Bowman & Landes fresh free-range turkey for years. It’s delicious, unlike any turkey you’ve had before, and it’s simple to prepare. Not only can Moody’s help with the big meals on the holidays, but our selection and options for hors d’oeuvres and party snacks are also plentiful, whether it’s a formal party or a casual event. From bacon-wrapped shrimp to bacon-wrapped Chicken Bombs, from fancy to game day, we have it all, from lollipop lamb chops to

barbecue chicken wings. Some of the simplest offerings can be truly elegant. A charcuterie board can run the gamut from easy to complex - look at these examples. Moody’s has been serving Zionsville and Boone County now for almost 10 years. Our customers are great - they’re like family - and Amy just about knows them all. Within the business, we refer to our stores as specialty butcher shops, but we’re really the “neighborhood butcher,” where we communicate daily with our customers, learn what they like and what they want, and do our best to provide it. Zionsville is a beautiful and thriving little town, and we love being part of it. We try to make walking through our doors as magical as following the bricks through the town. Part of my job, other than providing the best quality products we can find along with the best service, is to enhance and enrich our customers’ lives with good flavors and tastes in the products we make and provide. I said that it was part of my job - it’s really a passion. I’m an inveterate foodie and I love to share that passion with others, so if you’re in need of what to do for your entertaining needs, simply ask. We’re here to help.

18 / BOONE COUNTY MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2023 / TownePost.com

I’m often asked, “What makes Moody’s special?” That’s a huge question but has a relatively simple answer. It’s a combination of the quality of our products and the quality of our people. People make the difference in the shopping experience; product quality and that experience brings the customers back. It’s a privilege to serve the communities in which we operate, and it’s an honor to work side by side with the people who serve our customers.

effort, while giving them the best quality products they would purchase from our meat cases but with half the effort.

LOCAL PRODUCTS

INNOVATION

Moody’s works not just with local vendors and suppliers, but also local farmers who provide beef and hogs. These are special our signature beef is culled from the herds for quality. It’s dry-aged and better than prime. Our Berkshire pork is the wagyu of pork and full of flavor. This is a key differentiator.

We’re testing new products all the time. The overriding criteria is to help simplify our customers’ lives and save them time and

I’m also asked, “What’s coming down the line for Moody’s that your customer should know about?” The first thing is, in a world of high tech, butchering, cooking and flavor combinations remain both low tech and an art. So, at Moody’s, robots will not be cutting your meats, and you won’t have self-checkout.

We‘ve developed new products that begin to differentiate us from the traditional butcher shop - those that are ready to cook (prepackaged, marinated meats), ready to heat (prepackaged, precooked products) and ready to eat (just as this implies packaged and ready to devour).

Imagine your home, totally organized!

So, if you’re new to Zionsville and Boone County, come visit us. We want to be your neighborhood butcher. If you’re already part of the family, come in for some samples and friendly conversation. And yes, we really will help you with your holiday entertaining. For more info, visit moodysbutchershop.com.

They started with developing a baseball officiating class. The response from focus groups was positive. They added a

“TOPPING” HERSELF NEW PIZZA KING OWNER SERVES UP SUPPORT WITH EVERY SLICE Writer / Natalie Gargiulo Photographer / Michaela Marshall

New Pizza King Owner Danielle Hoffman, who took over the Lebanon location in August, has not only revitalized the space, but has also redefined the role that the pizza joint has within the community. Since taking over the pizzeria, the entrepreneur has made a commitment to giving back by spearheading initiatives that are leaving a mark on both the local youths and the town. “When I was buying the Pizza King, I knew I wanted to make it better for the community,” Hoffman says. “I am really excited about the opportunity of being able to give back.” Through the sale of breadsticks at the pizzeria this past September, Hoffman

made a donation of $304 to the Lebanon High School boys baseball team. With each breadstick sold, she pledged a dollar in honor of her employee Bryce Nelson, who not only attends the high school, but also actively participates in the school’s baseball team. “Bryce is a very smart young man and we clicked right away,” Hoffman says. “When I approached him with the idea of raising

money for his team, he was so excited. The town was very supportive of the cause, and it also created a sense of camaraderie and purpose for the Pizza King team.” Building upon this success, Hoffman expanded her philanthropic endeavors to include the Shop With a Cop program, which raises money for disadvantaged families and their children for Christmas. By partnering with the local police, Hoffman

says she will donate a percentage of sales from the popular cheesy garlic sticks directly towards supporting the upcoming event. She also invited one of the town’s police officers to join in the pizza-making process for a day at the pizzeria, fostering a deeper connection between the community, youths and law enforcement. “When I left the station, I told the officers I would donate 10% of the entire sales that day,” Hoffman says. “The kids will look up to the officer and appreciate him. This will be great for the police and will hopefully be a good donation to the cause.” Hoffman says she hopes her initiatives will inspire not just the youths at Pizza King, but also the entire town, to rally behind community causes.
