On March 4th, the fifth annual Jacob Pickett Response Organization Remembrance Day was held at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds. The organization was created to honor the life of a fallen deputy from the Boone County Sheriff’s office, but also to provide aid to those in need within the law enforcement family. With the hashtag #RespondLikeJake, the non-profit has benefited seven families and raised over $45,000 since it became a 501(c)(3). The goal of the organization is to continue the spirit in which Jason Pickett lived life-- it gives support to those facing tragedies.
In March of 2018, Pickett was shot while attempting to apprehend a wanted suspect. He left behind a family which included

two young sons. Grateful for how the community rallied, his surviving wife, Jen Pickett, wanted to find a positive way to give back plus continue how her husband responded when he learned someone needed help.
“What motivated me was that when Jake was killed, all you saw in the headlines was a negative narrative. It was hard. It overshadowed Jake and how he lived. I wanted him to be remembered for how he lived and not how he died,” Pickett says.
“On the first anniversary of his death, we held a Remembrance Day to try to change the narrative. We talked about how he lived and raised money to send the deputies he worked with to Washington D.C. to attend National Police Week. Jake and other law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty were honored at the National Police Memorial,” Pickett says.
After the first Remembrance Day, Pickett’s friends and people involved in organizing the event asked her if she wanted to continue it as a tradition. However, she wasn’t sure what the purpose for doing it again would be. Then she found out that a friend who was married to a deputy had been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.
“It broke my heart. I just sat on the porch and cried. I thought if Jake was here, he would drop everything to mow their grass. We would do jobs together. Then I thought, I can use the Remembrance Day event to
raise funds to help the family,” Pickett says.
“That second Remembrance Day was the first fundraiser for a family. I used to be a teacher and I had no nonprofit experience. It was all completely new. In the years since we have helped other families through donations, in-kind donations and corporate sponsors. Remembrance Day spotlights families with their permission so people know exactly where their money is going,” she says.
This year’s Remembrance Day was filled with activities that both raised money and benefitted the community. The Response & Run Memorial 5K was held in the morning. The afternoon included the annual Deputy Pickett Remembrance Day Blood Drive, food trucks, vendor booths, photo booth, bounce house, corn hole and silent auction bidding. There were police demonstrations held throughout the day to highlight different facets of law enforcement, like special response teams.
Throughout the year, if the organization sees a need arise, it steps up to help. Other sources of raising money have included special events such as charity polo matches, and this year, plans are being made to hold a car show in late summer or early fall. However, the organization maintains a personal touch when offering help.
“We are not just an organization that hands over a check. While we do raise funds for medical bills, we also put things in place

that can make a difference when someone is going through a tragedy. We have partnered with a vet so a family could have doggy day care. Other things we have set in place is providing a meal subscription service and contracting lawn care, so those things don’t have to be worried about,” Pickett says.
“We are 100% volunteer run, and any little bit of time someone can give makes a huge difference. We keep services people offer in our back pocket in case there is a need. Even the smallest donations really add up. Our website includes Jake’s badge number, 626, which is now retired. Jake was the type of person who would help an animal or stranger, as well as a friend. We want to #RespondLikeJake.

VISIONELLE EYECARE GIVES PATIENTS EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION IN A RELAXED SETTING
“We like to activate all the senses,” says Owner Dr. Nytarsha Thomas. “When you come in, you will notice that it smells amazing. We will greet you by name and offer you fresh, homemade cookies, water, a glass of wine, whatever you like.”
Thomas officially opened Visionelle Eyecare on December 31, 2015, as a locally owned, woman-owned, black-owned business.
Originally from Houston, Texas, Thomas received her doctorate from Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia. In California she discovered that working for a corporate practice offered her less flexibility and allowed her less time to spend with people to take care of their needs.
she says.
After moving to Indiana in 2013 with her husband, who is a captain for a major airline, she sought to bring her vision for a “wholesouled” optometry practice to life.
“Opening fresh is hard, but I got to create what I like,” Thomas says. “Everything you see here is me. I’m in a position that I can hire people I love.”
Rae Schaffer, office manager and cookie baker, first met Thomas as one of her patients.
When you first walk into Visionelle Eyecare, you might think you walked into a day spa.
“If a patient has a problem, I want to sit down and spend as much time as necessary,”
“Now I get to see her every day,” Schaffer says. “She’s really invested in knowing who people are and in knowing how their eye health affects their lives.”

“Not enough people get their eyes checked,” Thomas says. “There is so much more than how far you can see. They say the eyes are the window to the soul - at least to the rest of the body.”
Through the years Thomas has diagnosed tumors, strokes before they happened, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even STDs.
With a background in pediatric and vision therapy, Thomas sees patients as young as six months old.
“Too much learning happens in young children to cripple them with an undiagnosed eye problem,” she says, encouraging parents not to rely solely on a school vision screening.
“We’re heavy on education,” she says. “We’re also just fun.”
She posts videos on Visionelle’s YouTube channel that aim to educate and entertain.
The practice also hosts a themed photo shoot each year for their patients, most recently recreating pop art complete with makeup by Optician Coki Price. They display the photos inside and outside the practice for an eye-catching, ultrapersonalized touch.
“The patients love it,” Price says.
Visionelle Eyecare is located at 6618 Whitestown Parkway in Zionsville. For more info, call 317-769-3937 or go to visionelleeyecare.com. Also explore their YouTube channel @visionelleeyecare3882.

SPRING IS ALMOST HERE
There is always something motivating and inspiring to see the landscape come alive again. It’s also a great time to reflect on where the past year took you and where this next year may take you next. You are the captain of your ship, so 2023 is your choices, your decisions and hopefully YOUR YEAR! However, with
so much conflicting information out there, it can seem a bit overwhelming. The health and fitness industry can be full of fads and false promises. There is no easy way to get healthy. If there was, we would sure all do it! There is also no pill that will wipe away poor lifestyle choices. We have to fuel our
bodies like we fuel our vehicles, with good clean ingredients. Although the occasional indulgence is absolutely ok! Enjoy that birthday cake; just get right back on track with your next meal. There is no road map to perfect health, but we do have some really solid guidelines to go by.
IF YOU WANT TO GET IN THE BEST SHAPE OF YOUR LIFE IN 2023 KEEP READING…
7. Eat your meals on a schedule. This will help train your hunger and circadian rhythms. Intermittent fasting is fine, but that first meal of the day sets the tone, so whatever time it occurs MAKE IT FULL OF NUTRIENTS!
8. Replace snacking with water and drink it before meals. You usually want to snack because you’re bored or dehydrated. Water also helps you feel full and increases energy!
1. Get 80% of your calories from single ingredient nutrient dense foods. (spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes, salmon, etc.)
2. Avoid processed foods as much as possible because they are addictive, void of nutrients and leave you feeling low on energy & stamina.
3. Drink half your bodyweight in ounces of water each and every day!
4. Lift weights 2-4 times per week. Use progressive overload to build muscle. (Progressive overload is simply doing more through reps, weight or frequency) Muscle is MAGIC!
5. Eat .8-1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. This helps you build and retain muscle. Eat protein with every meal!
6. Focus on creating good habits in regards to a healthy lifestyle. Focus on the daily habits, not the outcome.
9. You become the average of the 5 people you hang around most. Choose wisely.
10. Eat to 80% fullness. Eat your meals slower and more mindfully. Leave a bit of room and avoid getting stuffed with every meal.
11. Create a habit to get at least 8-10K steps a day. This improves your health, burn calories, speeds recovery, decreases stress and improves your cognitive function. Get your steps in by walking in the morning, after meals and doing walking meetings when possible.
12. Learn how to manage your emotions without food, drugs or alcohol. The more you numb yourself with substances the more they come back to haunt you. Find out why you eat your stress or emotions, then work to heal that part of you so you can deal with them in healthy ways. Our emotions are designed to inform us, not direct us. Don’t worry about outcomes, focus on the process. Take measurable steps and
use analytics to get you there.
13. Fix your sleeping habits. Sleep helps you recover, increases energy and controls your appetite. Sleep is YOUR super power! Try no food for 3 hours, no liquids for 2 hours and no screen time for one hour before bed.
14. BE PATIENT with yourself. Stop trying to rush the process. Start thinking long-term and give yourself grace.
15. Be grateful for what your body CAN do. It’s doing what it can to keep you alive.

When someone receives a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, whether it be themselves or a family member, it’s a terrifying moment. Many questions arise, and it can be difficult to know what to do or where to start with the diagnosis.
Jessie Hillock has answers.
As the owner and founder of The Memory Compass, Hillock provides direction, resources and compassion for families dealing with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other neurodegenerative diagnoses.
Hillock is a speech-language pathologist who specializes in the cognitive decline and communication skills surrounding Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. She has spent six years of her professional career in skilled nursing facilities.
“It was while I was working in these skilled nursing facilities that I was working with patients and their families who had just received the diagnosis,” Hillock says. “Unfortunately their neurologist would say,
PLAN OF ACTION
THE MEMORY COMPASS HELPS TO NAVIGATE MEMORY LOSS AND COGNITIVE CHALLENGES
‘I’ll see you back in six months,’ and the family wasn’t getting the education they needed.”
That was when Hillock decided to take matters into her own hands. The Memory Compass was founded in 2019 to help families navigate memory loss and cognitive decline, whether during the early stages, a recent diagnosis or further progression in their journey.
“There wasn’t a specific place for people to go to have real guidance and education on the cognitive disease diagnoses,” she says. “I wanted to be the navigator to help them along the way. I wanted families to know that there was somebody there to support them.”
Hillock has created her business to include a wide range of services for families needing assistance in handling this major health change.
The Memory Compass offers three tiers of services to clients. One tier is memory-loss navigation. Hillock helps families navigate the disease. Through in-depth interviews, she gets to know the family and everything about their loved one who is diagnosed with memory loss. She provides the tools, expert support, local resources and knowledge on what to advocate for, when it comes to taking care of someone diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease.
“Families aren’t told how to handle day to day, or how to tackle the behavioral changes of this diagnosis,” Hillock says. “I help the families with the journey and even the mindset shift of this cognitive decline of their loved one.”
The second tier involves consultations and mentoring to fellow therapists. Many of these therapists are across the country and looking to bring a similar business to their own state.
The third tier involves training health care professionals, businesses and communities. Hillock trains businesses on how they can be more supportive and understanding for their employees who are taking care of a family member with Alzheimer’s or dementia. In particular, this addresses the “sandwich generation” - those taking care of children while also taking care of a parent with a cognitive disease. Hillock provides professional programs and strategy sessions to those employers thinking about providing support services to their employees.
Not only is The Memory Compass changing lives, but it’s also the first of its kind in Indiana. It is the first and only business in Indiana that provides this extensive amount of services regarding neurodegenerative disease resources, education and support to caretakers, acting as a true navigator and supporter through this difficult journey.
In addition to owning and operating
The Memory Compass, Hillock also co-facilitates the Central Indiana Daughterhood Circle monthly support group, a community of people who support each other as they care for aging parents and other family members.
Patients or families are encouraged to reach out to Hillock and her team at The Memory Compass as soon as they feel that something is off. She will provide an immediate diagnosis, schedule a discovery call, and discuss pain points and ideas for an action plan.
If you or your family are interested in these services, visit thememorycompass.com and fill out their contact form. You can also email Hillock at info@thememorycompass. com. The Memory Compass serves Zionsville and surrounding areas in person or virtually, and across the U.S. virtually or by phone.

Stephanie Haston cared for her ill mother in her home for nine years and witnessed first-hand the need for skilled in-home caregivers. She struggled to find someone equipped to handle her mother’s day-today needs. Haston, a nurse herself, decided it was time to take matters into her own hands.
Haston owns and operates Cadence Training Solutions, LLC. Before 2022, Stephanie and her daughter, Kayla primarily

taught CPR, first aid and SafeSitter training as Cadence CPR. Last January, after Haston’s mother’s passing, Stephanie decided to launch a healthcare focused vocational training division, Cadence Healthcare Training Solutions (CHTS). This division focuses on offering short term training programs with long term career opportunities for its participants while Cadence CPR will remain focused on health and safety training programs such as CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens and SafeSitter. Haston held the grand opening of CHTS on Jan. 11, 2023, the first anniversary of her mother’s passing.
“We have accomplished a lot in a very short time to bring this to fruition,” Haston says. “We are doing this in honor of my mom and her legacy as being forever the knowledge seeker and problem solver and to reduce caregiver staffing shortages in order to meet the care needs of our community.”
Haston has a long history in the allied health education arena. She started as a medic in the military. Haston then went back to
school for medical assisting. She says that career path provided her with job stability, a livable income and workable hours to raise her daughter. She now holds a master’s degree in Nursing Education.
CHTS currently offers a Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program, Advanced Skills for Nursing Assistants, American Heart Association (AHA) CPR/AED/First Aid Courses, SafeSitter Training and tutoring for nursing and allied health students with many more courses to come in the future.
“Our CNA training program is approved by The Indiana Department of Health,” Haston says. “The course is taught partially in a classroom and simulation lab setting, followed by a hands-on clinical portion which is completed at local nursing homes with which we’ve partnered.”
The classroom is equipped with two simulation lab areas, with the first designed to represent a resident’s room in long-term care facility or patient room in an inpatient facility. The second area is designated for skills such as medication administration and phlebotomy.

Haston believes cost shouldn’t stand in the way of pursuing a career in allied health or nursing. In response, she created Cindy’s Angels Scholarship Fund in honor of her mother. The scholarship assists with funding for individuals working toward acquiring the necessary training to fulfill entry-level healthcare staffing shortages.
CHTS offers many different payment options and possible funding sources for students such as clinical partner sponsorships and private donations. Haston says CHTS’s CNA program is an approved training program with the Department of Workforce Development. Potential students may contact their local Work One office to determine financial assistance eligibility.
“As a non-facility based, independent training program, our students can complete their training and then work at a facility of their choice,” Haston says. “That sets us apart from students training at a select nursing home facility. If they receive their training there, they are expected to work there.” If a student chooses an independent training program such as CHTS, the law requires nursing homes to reimburse the cost of a CNA training program once an individual is hired.
Haston’s team includes Kayla Haston, ATC/LAT, ROT, CNA and Janet Terrill, RN. Kayla leads Cadence CPR as Lead CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor, SafeSitter Program Coordinator/ Instructor as well as Simulation Lab Assistant. Terrill serves as the CNA Program Director. Haston herself is Lead CNA Instructor, CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor and Simulation Lab Director.
CHTS is hosting a Healthcare Career Exploration Camp later this summer. The next CNA training cohort begins on April 3. Registration ends March 20, 2023. CHTS is located at 951 Monument Dr. in Lebanon. For more information, visit cadencehealthcaretraining.com.

CERESET USES TECHNOLOGY TO COMBAT STRESS
Previously, Hanning used this technology to serve clients in the area under a company called Balanced Matter, for 10 years. However, after a new wave of Cereset technology, Hanning decided to bring the tech to her own Carmel community in 2018.
Hanning says she saw results in her own life after the services were recommended to her by a family member.

If you’ve ever wondered what your brain sounds like, Cereset, a global technological leader in brain restoration, is giving clients around the world exactly that. Cereset’s technology helps to combat stress, trauma and anxiety to essentially reset the brain.
Cereset’s patented BrainEcho technology uses sensors to reflect the brain’s rhythms. Sensors are used with music that is played back to the client through earbuds. By hearing itself, the brain can start on repairs that will help restore the mind and provide restful sleep, according to Brenda Hanning, owner of Cereset’s Carmel location.
“Seeing the great results of a loved one who suffered from insomnia and anxiety, I decided to have sessions,” Hanning says. “Within a month of having sessions, I was sleeping soundly, thinking more clearly, and I wasn’t carrying a constant feeling of angst. I was able to feel happy just because it was a sunny day. I decided to bring this technology to my community, so more people who want to be proactive towards stress by taking back control of their lives could have access to the Cereset technology closer to home.”
During a typical session, a client goes into a room and takes a seat on an antigravity chair. The lights are turned low as sensors are placed on their scalp, and earbuds are provided so the client can listen to the beats of their own mind. Most clients, Hanning
says, end up falling asleep during the process.
The Cereset Wellness Package includes five sessions that last about 90 minutes each. Results, Hanning says, are often seen within three weeks of the first treatment.
Hanning says the reset of the brain can often help turn off the basic fight, flight or freeze responses common in those who suffer from chronic stress, trauma or anxiety.
“Research has shown an increased risk of irritability, anxiety, forgetfulness and foggy thinking for individuals not getting enough sleep,” Hanning says. “With Cereset, these individuals can reduce stress in their brains, and achieve more restful sleep and more robust power for cognitive performance. When the brain relaxes these imbalances in the stress system, the brain can then selfcorrect the ‘stuck’ hemisphere and reset itself. A naturally reset and balanced brain can help resolve issues such as insomnia, stress, PTSD, anxiety, depression, anger, poor problem solving, lack of focus, and memory.”
To learn more, contact Cereset Carmel at 317-922-7588 or visit cereset.com. It is located at 160 West Carmel Drive, Suite 186.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness estimates only 46.2% of U.S. adults with mental illness received treatment in 2020. The two most considerable obstacles in seeking care are cost and access. Deidra T. Rausch, Executive Director of The Cabin, a mental health care facility, hopes to assist Boone County residents with their mental health needs by removing those two obstacles.
The Cabin was founded in 1999 to provide various therapeutic care

to individuals. Rausch says with the onset of the pandemic, the need for services increased, also increasing the need for additional therapists at The Cabin.
“We started with a location in Zionsville in 2010 and then added our Westfield location in 2019,” Rausch says. “Then came the pandemic, and I hired around 10 therapists over the course of eight months. We then added a satellite location in Zionsville in 2020. We added the Retreat location in 2021 and a Lebanon location in 2022.”
Rausch is now consolidating and moving her Zionsville staff to one primary location at 112 North 9th St. in Zionsville. The Lebanon, Westfield and Retreat locations remain open. It was essential to Rausch the new site was in an area conducive to The Cabin’s unique approach to therapy.
“We offer something called ‘adventure therapy,’ which essentially

means you’re not receiving therapy in an office but rather out in nature,” Rausch says. “The new office is easily accessible to nature trails which is essential for adventure therapy.”
The Cabin also offers different approaches to what Rausch calls ‘talk therapy,’ including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), expressive art therapy, enneagram coaching, nutritional counseling and life coaching. The Cabin also offers workshops and seminars on various topics for individuals and groups.
“Our certified enneagram coach looks at a person’s enneagram personality type,” Rausch says. “It’s very effective for parentings wanting to understand their children better. We often use it in our corporate wellness sessions, as well.”
Rausch says she knows finding a therapist you trust can be difficult. To help clients find the best fit, The Cabin offers meetand-greet appointments with therapists. She says she never wants a client to pay for an entire session only to find out it wasn’t a good fit.
“An important piece of success in therapy depends upon feeling you have a good relationship with your therapist,” Rausch says. “This is a great way for the therapist to determine the client's issues and if the relationship is a good match.”
The Cabin also offers a financial assistance program for those that qualify called The Samaritan Fund. The program offers therapy sessions at a discounted sliding scale fee based on the federal poverty scale. Rausch says The Cabin doesn’t limit how many clients qualify or the number of sessions those who are eligible may receive.
Rausch says she’s seeing an increased need for services for children and teenagers. The Lebanon location is staffed to assist families needing mental health services for their kids.

JAIL BREAK
BOONE COUNTY JAIL DISTILLERY REPURPOSES HISTORIC BUILDING
gin and moonshine that customers are bound to love.
Identifying and taking advantage of a great opportunity are key steps in all business decisions. That is how businesses, inventions and developments all come to be.
Sean Stoller and his family took advantage of an opportunity in 2014 when the old Boone County Jail was up for auction. Seeing the possibilities for this historic building in the heart of Lebanon was a decision to jump on.
“When we heard that this jail was being auctioned off, we felt that it was too good of an opportunity to miss,” Stoller says. “All within a week, we found out about the jail, did some research and bought it.”
The Boone County Jail first opened in 1833 in Lebanon, Indiana. It moved to its future home of 115 years on the corner of Washington and Meridian St. in Lebanon. The new jail was built in 1992. So, when the jail was up for sale in 2014, the Stoller family saw potential in the jail’s historic look and beautiful architecture to create a new distillery in town.
Stoller owns and operates the business with his sister, Nicki. The two have an incredible background of three generations worth of expertise in the liquor industry. This includes a phenomenal understanding of taste profiles for their vodka, bourbon, whiskey,
“A main goal of ours was that we wanted to get our customers to know what they are drinking and understand the food science behind different spirits,” Stoller says. “We want to have a little bit of something for everyone.”
The Boone Co. Jail Distillery has a great product line-up that appeases all tastebuds.
Their vodkas (Hoosier Vodka and Boone County Jail Vodka) are made from 100% corn, have a semi-sweet taste and are praised for their smoothness.
Boone Co. Jail Distillery has a couple of different gins that are considered ‘New World American.’ They use many of the same botanicals in their gins as you would in teas. Their Boone County Jail gin mixes doses of citrus with some sweet spice and floral notes. Then, the distillery also offers gin aged in bourbon barrels for 9 months. It is loved for its gin and bourbon flavor combinations.
The distillery also offers an absinthe drink called Poet’s Potion Absinthe Classique. It is a 125-proof drink with hints of cinnamon, clove and licorice.
The distillery offers three different bourbon products that are loved by customers. The Kinnard and Drake Straight bourbon is raved about for its sweet butterscotch and apricot taste followed by rye spice. The Kinnard and Drake Toasted Straight bourbon and Kinnard and Drake single barrel straight bourbon are delicious

options for bourbon-lovers too.
Lastly, fan-favorites are the Boone Co. Jail Distillery’s moonshine options. With choices of plain moonshine or delicious, flavored moonshine (lemon drop and apple pie), customers love the fun flavors that the distillery has on the menu.
The Boone Co. Jail Distillery products are sold across the country. Six states offer them at a variety of liquor stores. The Stoller family
has plans to expand into another 10-15 states in 2023.
The Boone Co. Jail Distillery is located on 104 W. Washington Street in Lebanon, Indiana. You can find additional information at boonecojaildistillery.com.
