He worked hard to maintain a free and loose set despite some of the stresses that go along with shooting a feature film. “Honestly, we were really lucky that we did not have any unforeseen things pop up,” Matsoukas says. He attributes the film’s completion to his entire crew, especially to his co-writer and lead actor Benjamin Madrid. “Peter wrote the entire thing,” Madrid says. “I added some stuff throughout the process, but writing a whole script is a different ball game. Peter has something I don’t have, patience.” In addition to being the lead actor, Madrid tapped into some of his commercial connections to play supporting roles.

Jennifer Lisak Golding 317-643-2071

Sapphire Strategy is an Indianapolis-based, womanowned business. By utilizing comprehensive data, experience-backed intuition, and strategic creativity, Jenn and her team provide a variety of digital marketing services with a different approach than a traditional agency. One of the biggest differentiators is the development of the Sapphire Lifecycle Model, a model that guides brands through each step of the marketing lifecycle to help them audit their current practices, identify what’s working, and create and implement effective strategies based on this information. Regardless of approach, our goal will always be to build meaningful relationships with our clients and become a partner in success.

Ellen Schwartz & Ghega Scolari 317-691-9593

We LOVE finding and selling unique things in our little stationery/gift shop. After 6 1/2 years we especially love the many wonderful customers we have come to know.

October is National Women’s Small Business Month, and we are honoring local women-owned businesses. Female entrepreneurs have made incredible progress over the years as more and more women-owned businesses are started and successfully running. Take a look at these great women-owned businesses in the area and be sure to #SupportLocal this month! KRISTI HOWARD SHULTZ CONSULTING Kristi Howard-Shultz 317-670-4644

As a non profit management consultant, I am passionate about partnering with women to achieve their organizational dreams and goals. Women are natural servant leaders but when we’re in the day-to-day weeds of helping others, it can be hard to see a way through. WHAT I OFFER -Capacity Building & Training -Campaign Management -Interim Support

ARTIFACTS Jeanne Kaplan 317-255-1178

Artifacts was opened by my mother and her good friend in 1977. For nearing a half a century the aim has been consistent; to highlight and promote the work of American contemporary crafts people. At Artifacts you will find ceramics, glass, wood, decorative objects, artful gifts and especially jewelry.

HOTEL BROAD RIPPLE

Debra Hasbrook 317-787-2665

I opened Hotel Broad Ripple in 2014 because I believed that the Village of Broad Ripple could support a unique, small, boutique hotel. Fortunately I was correct. I am happy to be a woman and happy to be a hotelier. It has been good fit!

LOLA BLU BOUTIQUE Pamela Moosey 317-426-2116

I wanted to open up a women’s boutique that was not only affordable but also offered a wide variety of clothing, jewelry, accessories, and gift items. I have created a beautiful, peaceful, fragrant space that provides a unique and relaxing shopping experience. I am drawn to Bohemian and vintage styles, but also simple, comfortable basics - Lola Blu has become a perfect blend of all three. I take great care in hand selecting each item from the softness of fabrics, uniqueness of jewelry, and essence of each candle. It’s important that each customer leaves with a smile on their face!

FRANGIPANI BODY PRODUCTS Tracy Land 773-230-5009

I started making my own skin care products as a way to relieve the symptoms of frustrating Rosacea symptoms and adult acne problems. I needed something more effective and much gentler than the harsh chemicals and antibiotics my dermatologist was recommending. In 2008, I started Frangipani as a way of offering safer skin care products to people who wanted a better product for their skin. All Frangipani products are plant-based and certified cruelty-free. Ingredients include steam distilled essential oils, cold pressed carrier oils, certified organic ingredients when available and economical, and are otherwise sourced from native regions.

JUST POP IN!

Carly Swift & Mandy Selke 317-985-2359

Carly and Mandy are very passionate about Just Pop In! and equally for their love of community. Their drives comes from bringing awareness to their positive brand and what it represents: uplifting women, important causes and empowering their community! Throughout their 17 years in business, they take pride in meaningful partnerships with a variety of local and national businesses/organizations who share their passion, drive, culture and optimism. Popcorn isn’t just popcorn to the twins; it’s a catalyst to a positive experience. JPI’s philosophy is based on positivity, human-kindness and respect for one another, their clientele and the community.

THIEVES

Kristen Abernathy 248-762-9788

The drive for opening Thieves is a fusion of passion + opportunity. I’ve always been drawn to nightlife and solid concepts that provide exceptional customer service in an enticing atmosphere. With these strange times we find ourselves in, opportunity to leave corporate world and start something from the ground up quickly became a no-brainer. I have a nostalgic place in my heart for the Broad Ripple Village of my youth – and I’m excited to re-create a piece of that today. The Broad Ripple community has been incredibly welcoming, and I’m so proud to be a part of it.

Real estate has allowed us to do that, while at the same time helping other families with their goals of buying their dream home!

ABIGAIL DAVID OPTOMETRY Abigail David 317-252-5342

I’ve known I wanted to be an optometrist since I was a little girl and my sister developed vision problems. I love educating people about their eyes and helping people see their best. After building a successful solo practice in the Greenwood Target Optical over the last nineteen years, I was delighted to have the opportunity to open a new practice in my own neck of the woods, in our neighborhood of Broad Ripple. Since we’ve been open in June of this year, it’s been amazing to see all of our friends and neighbors at the Glendale Target Optical!

THE STUDIO KATE Katie Plummer 317-340-6247

Whether it’s a Senior, Family or Head Shot session we want to create images that make girls and women see themselves for how incredibly beautiful they are, taking their own focus off their flaws. I started our health insurance agency in 2013 after working over 20 years at Anthem and elsewhere in the insurance industry. or Indy resident John Atkins, creating art is about more than producing an image on a canvas.

It’s a meditation of sorts. “A big reason why I do art is that it calms everything down, like anxiety and those types of things, especially with colored pencil drawing,” Atkins says. “I can sit and draw, and everything else goes away, and I can be at one with the paper and pencil. I know if I can keep producing then I’m in a safe space, meditation-wise.” Atkins gravitates toward oils, acrylics and watercolors in addition to colored pencils, and many of his works center on surreal human forms that break up the space of natural facial features into abstract images. “I’ll usually do an acrylic underpainting where I block out things with acrylic, and then I do oil over that so I can get detail,” he says. “I like doing it that way because if you do oil washes you have to wait forever for every layer to dry. The colored pencil drawings are mainly what people know me for, and I mainly do 8”x10” or 9”x12” pieces in colored pencil. ”

This summer Atkins had his work, including several colored pencil pieces, shown at Gallery 6202 on North College Avenue, which opened in December of 2019 and is owned by Jeff and Jackie Evans. Gallery 6202, whose tagline is “Fine Art and Fun Stuff ”, features artwork from around the world as well as Hoosier artists. “Gallery 6202, I believe, is currently the only gallery to show at in Broad Ripple,” Atkins says. “It’s a really great space and 17 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / atBRip.com

something that locals should support and get behind.” The gallery features a wide variety of artwork, from traditional Indiana landscapes to abstract and cubist works. “There’s a little bit of everything,” Jeff Evans says. “We have metal sculptures as well, from a company out of Louisville.” Evans was immediately struck by Atkins’ work upon viewing a few of his paintings and sculptures. “His work has a very strong impact on most people,” Evans says, “It’s very colorful and striking. His sculptures are as amazing as his painted work.” Atkins points to the Chicago Imagists of the 1960s and 1970s as a source of inspiration in his artistic endeavors. “I like Jim Nutt, Gladys Nilsson, Roger Brown, those kind of people and the whole imagist mindset,” Atkins says. “I’m interested in the approach where the image is the important thing and not really what it means - not where you’re standing in an

ivory tower and saying you’re doing a piece of art to support all these different ideas. It’s more about the image.” Atkins cites abstract expressionism as his preferred artistic approach. “I tend to get to a place where you’re mixing paint on the canvas and trying to make happy accidents in your images that flow into things that you wouldn’t have thought of, but that work,” he says. Midtown residents can usually find Atkins’ work at cafes and restaurants, and he typically does an annual show at the Hubbard & Cravens Broad Ripple location. “It’s hard with COVID because a lot of the cafes I would usually show at are closed,” Atkins says. “In the future, I’d like to do a show that has all my colored pencil work featured.” Originally from Hobart, Indiana, Atkins drew early artistic inspiration while diligently assembling classic monster model kits from the 1960s and 1970s as a youngster.

“I think what started me out in creating were those monster models - I really liked those,” Atkins recalls. “I would make those, and then I would start to deviate from that and do drawings.” While Atkins didn’t take any art classes throughout his high school years, he began further exploring the visual arts while attending Ball State University on a full-ride scholarship with the school’s swim team. “I was more on a college prep course track because I really didn’t know what I wanted to do,” Atkins recalls of his high school experience. “I went with the more advanced courses like advanced biology and physics, and stuff like that. When I got to college I thought about maybe coaching swimming and being an artist on the side.” Atkins began his college journey as a physical education major, but soon felt compelled to develop his artistic skills and eventually switched to a major in fine arts with a concentration in drawing. After a graduate assistantship at Ball State upon completion of his bachelor’s degree, Atkins began showcasing his artwork at

California in a few galleries and had a job at an art supply store where a lot of celebrities would come in, which was kind of cool,” he says.

beyond since then. “I started showing my stuff at most of the cafes that showed artwork, and at the Editions Limited gallery, which used to be at 62nd Street,” he says. “I was part of the Oranje event here as well, and I’ve had some pieces accepted into shows around New York and other places. I really like it here in Indy.”

Atkins then moved to Chicago where he worked at a high-end pictureframing job, and displayed his artwork at several shows - including a show at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he unwittingly won a contest.

“I had sent some slides of my work in to them, and they were having a contest at the time but I didn’t know that,” he recalls with a laugh. “I was just sending slides around, but I won that contest. Then I had a solo show there, which was probably my best show I’ve ever had.” shows around Muncie, and eventually set out with a few friends for Hollywood, California.

From November 5 through January 10, Gallery 6202 will feature a special collection from CCA Gallery, which was original founded in Broad Ripple and is currently located in Carmel.

Atkins then relocated to Indy, eventually settling in Broad Ripple in 2005, and other than a brief stint in Arizona, he’s been part of the local art scene here in midtown and

HAUNTING ENDEAVOR Nicole and Michael Kobrowski Explore the Unexplained Writer / Kara Kavensky Photography Provided

The official website for Unseenpress.com, Inc. touts “Real Ghosts. Real History. Real Indiana.” Co-owners Nicole Kobrowski and her husband Michael are partners in the unique business of ghosts, and many people have engaged in their haunted tours, haunted overnight experiences, and consultation services for help with supposed unwanted spirits and entities. Nicole has been fascinated by the supernatural since she was a child. She describes a Scholastic book she read as a child that featured the alleged ax murderer Lizzie Borden. “I couldn’t imagine that someone who donated the bulk of their estate to ‘furry

friends’ could be a murderess, but there is strong evidence to suggest that she was, regardless of never being charged with the crime,” says Nicole, who loves scary movies and has watched Sammy Terry, a television horror host, since she was a child. During the 1970s and 1980s, it was not uncommon to have someone committed to an asylum if they claimed to see ghosts. Although Nicole grew up in an alleged haunted house, it was not a topic of conversation. Much later she and her sisters all experienced events she says were suspicious and inexplicable. Nicole says the family who now lives in that home claims to experience various oddities different from what Nicole and her sisters experienced. Nicole met Michael online during the early days of the internet. They engaged in conversation in a ghost-themed chat room. Michael was in Germany at the time, and Nicole followed her heart and moved to Europe for five years before the two of them moved to the Indianapolis area. 21 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / atBRip.com

The Kobrowskis started participating in ghost tours on Halloween in 2001, formally incorporating Unseenpress.com, Inc. at that time. Their tours, known as Historic Indiana Ghost Walks and Tours, combine history from their extensive research and a healthy dose of ghost-related content. Tours are currently scheduled in downtown Indianapolis, Westfield and Noblesville. “As the crowds grew over the past couple decades in Broad Ripple, we had to curb our walking tours due to the size of our tour groups and the massive number of people out and about in the Broad Ripple Village,” Michael says. Some parts of Broad Ripple are tied to stories of hauntings including Broad Ripple Park, The Monkey’s Tale, Butler University, the Indiana School for the Blind, Crown Hill Cemetery and Broad Ripple Brewpub. One local story includes a little girl supposedly seen on the swings at Broad Ripple Park. Historical reports indicate that a young girl died in a roller coaster accident when the park was home to a large amusement park more than 100 years ago. Legend has it that on a still day with no wind, a swing was moving. The girl has been

reported as visible in either a plain or floral dress, with ankle socks and Mary Jane shoes. Further back in the park, at the river’s edge, a canoe of Native American traders has supposedly been seen paddling by. According to another local legend, in the early 1900s two boys were fishing in the Millersville Road footbridge area across from the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and one of the boys fell in the water. People have claimed to see the boy on the bridge and hear him splashing into the water. During a bus tour several people were reported to have felt ill at the location, including Nicole, and one person passed out upon claiming to have experienced a vision of the drowning event. The Kobrowskis also offer their help to people who claim their homes are haunted. For investigations, they heavily vet the homeowners with a questionnaire. They believe homeowners should attempt to

communicate with any spirits they claim are inhabiting a house, and try to let any alleged spirits know whether they are welcome or not. Depending on the homeowners’ personal beliefs or needs, Nicole may direct them to their pastor or minister, or other types of investigators and cleansers. For overnight investigations and private home consultations, the Kobrowskis use professional gear for data collection, including thermal cameras and temperature gauges as well as photography equipment. Nicole and Michael have authored fourteen books and are currently collaborating on another. Titles include “Encyclopedia of Haunted Indiana,” “Fractured Intentions” (which focuses on Central State Hospital in Indianapolis), and “Betti Meets a Ghost,”

which is for kids. They also created “The Big Lizzie Borden Coloring Book,” which is for adults and contains historical information. The couple is currently working on two ghosts books and a psychological thriller set in Indiana. The Kobrowskis’ books are available on Amazon.com and unseenpress.com, which includes a calendar of walking tours, store, contact page and more.
