Owners Brenda and Jeff Armie
N E W D I Y B O U T I Q U E C E L E B R AT E S GRAND OPENING IN WESTFIELD Writer / Jennifer Brugh Photographer / Ellie Sophia Photography
Do-it-yourself home décor has a new hands-on workshop in Central Indiana. On August 24, husband and wife, Jeff and Brenda Armie, welcomed guests to their grand opening of AR Workshop Carmel in Westfield, IN. Located off of Gray Road, the DIY boutique provides a creative space for people who want to take classes and learn how to make their very own home décor. With more than 135 franchise locations across the United States, the Armie’s location is the first to open in Indiana. Brenda, who owns a majority of the business and runs the classes, says AR Workshop is unlike other craft-making establishments in that people can do a variety of different projects at the same time rather than doing the same project as everyone else.
After looking for a way to pair her love for crafts with a business model by searching “hashtag words” on the internet, Brenda came across AR Workshop. As her “partner in crime,” and CFO, Jeff ’s responsibility was to research the company and run the initial numbers. After realizing that this could work for her, Jeff encouraged Brenda to pursue her passion. So began the journey to opening an AR Workshop. “I love crafting. I would do it on the side, after work, make people things,” Brenda says. “Then, I decided that I wanted to do this full-time. So, I started online, looking at things, thinking ‘There has to be places that you can make things.’ I necessarily didn’t think about classes per-say, but just making things.” Corporately owned by Maureen Anders and Adria Ruff, AR Workshop began three years ago in North Carolina as a simple Etsy shop that blossomed into a 6 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atCarmel.com
fully branded e-commerce store, formerly known as Anders Ruff. With more demand for classes that taught customers how to make their projects and designs, the pair opened up a workshop. Eventually, customers began asking about how they could open up their own stores and so a franchise was born. Now, the Carmel and Westfield area has its very own location thanks to the Armies and Brenda’s love for crafting. “She’s always had a bug for craft,” Jeff says. “She’s always had this desire. Every year it’s something different. She tried with this, she tried with that. She’s always making something for somebody.” AR Workshop is designed to give guests a truly do-it-yourself experience with the help of a guide. The hands-on classes give people the chance to create custom home décor pieces using raw wood, professional paints and canvas. Projects include wood
signs, frames, canvas pillows, round signs, lazy susans, tote bags, dog beds and so much more. “We like our customers to be able to do things from start to finish,” Brenda says. “So, we like them to be able to use the drill or use the nail gun. I mean, we’ll teach them how to use it. If they’re uncomfortable with it, we’ll definitely do it for them, but we want them to have the whole experience of doing everything, step-by-step.” Classes can be done solo or with a group for a unique and fun activity. AR Workshop also hosts private events such as birthday parties, bridal showers, baby showers and team-building events. However, if crafting isn’t your thing and you’re just looking for gifts or seasonal decorations to put in your home, AR Workshop does sell generic pieces.
“We can make gifts, and then we sell anything that is on the walls,” Brenda says. “I’m hoping in the future to get retail, which probably is going to be earrings, bracelets, candles and bath bombs. But we’re just starting out.” According to Brenda, networking and being plugged into the community has helped the launch of her workshop be successful. Friends and family helped throughout the building process, made signage, ran social media campaigns and helped prepare the new space for its grand opening. Without their support, Brenda doesn’t know if AR would have been possible. “We’ve been blessed with a lot of good family and friends,” Jeff adds. Booking a class is simple and done completely online. Choose the project, check the calendar for the available day that
your project is being done, choose a graphic design, register and then pay. When you show up for class, all of the materials are ready to go. If you want to tweak a design or make a complete custom piece, you can add this as an option during your online registration. And leaving a class unhappy is not an option. “My philosophy is: ‘To have fun and to never walk away with a project that you’re not happy with,’” Brenda says. “Basically, at the beginning of every class, that’s what I tell everyone. You’re here to have fun, and you want to walk away with something that you are happy with.” AR Workshop is located at 14643 North Gray Road in Westfield. You can visit them online at arworkshop.com/carmel/ or give them a call at 317-747-0200 for more information.
SALT FOR YOUR SOUL
NEW BUSINESS OFFERS SALT THERAPY TREATMENT OPTIONS Writer / Mandi Cheesman Photography Provided
In the mid-1800s, Polish health officials noticed salt mine workers didn’t suffer from the same types of upper respiratory problems and lung diseases as the general population. Officials attributed it to the small particles of salt they breathed in on a regular basis. Fortunately, trekking to underground salt mines is no longer necessary to reap those same health benefits. A short trip to Salt for Your Soul can deliver the same results. In July, Shauna Hale and her husband, Darren, opened Salt for Your Soul after Shauna watched her mother fight, and ultimately lose, a hard-fought battle with stomach cancer.
“I researched and used a lot of alternative treatments to help treat my mom and help ease her pain,” Shauna says. “And I am allergic to most every antibiotic there is, so I also had to find alternative treatments to illnesses for myself.” Salt For Your Soul also gives back to the community by donating a percentage to Prevail Inc. for each of its salt room sessions. Prevail is a local organization that works with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and also serves victims of other crimes. So, the former kindergarten teacher earned an applied neuroscience degree from Butler University and set her sights on a different type of instruction – teaching the lifealtering benefits of salt. 8 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atCarmel.com
“I’m a teacher now, but not inside the four walls of a classroom,” she says. “I was pulled out of the classroom, almost like a magnetic force that pulled me into this.”
SALT THERAPY
Halo is the Greek word for salt, and halotherapy, also called dry salt therapy, is a procedure where pure, pharmaceutical grade salt is heated and ground up in a machine called a halogenerator, according to Shauna. The crushed salt particles, which are 15 times smaller than a human hair, are then dispersed into the air to mimic the microclimate of a salt cave. The particles saturate the respiratory system where they work to remove toxins. This process, Shauna says, helps open and expand the constricted airways allowing her clients to breathe easier. She says the salt also reduces
inflammation throughout the body and helps boost the immune system. “There are plenty of studies I can produce for people, but the proof is in the salt,” Shauna says. “They need to just come and try it out. They will quickly see that the sound of salt is safety.” And that is Shauna’s biggest goal – to make her clients feel safe. “There aren’t a lot of places left where you can just feel safe,” she says. “And that is what I want people to feel here, from the moment they arrive until they leave.” Shauna says that each person’s healing is important to her and that making her business feel like a healing space is critical. “Everything has personal touches, from the moment you walk in until the moment you leave,” Shauna says. “Every person is extremely important to me.” Children are welcome and encouraged to visit the salt rooms, and Shauna even has rocks, sticks, and shells for them to design Mandalas in the salt while they’re getting their treatments. Up to four people can be in a room at a time. Those visiting Shauna’s other healing therapy, the flotation pods, are encouraged to “let your troubles go down my drain.” The floatation pods are private, specialized pods filled with 10 inches of highly-saturated Epsom saltwater that allow you to float effortlessly on top of the water at near zero-gravity. The water is kept around 94 degrees, so it feels like your skin, and you don’t need to know how to swim because you basically float on top like a cork. “We use 400 pounds of Epsom salt in 100 gallons of water,” Shauna says.

“It is such a relaxing experience, and it allows you to absorb magnesium through the largest organ of our bodies, the skin.” Shauna says the flotation pods also help reduce cortisol levels while raising the body’s endorphins. Even though Shauna, who battled chronic sinus troubles, can personally attest to the fact that she has not had a sinus infection since she started halotherapy, she still battles the ongoing myth that salt is bad for you. “I always hear from people who say they are on a low sodium diet, so they don’t think salt therapies are good for them,” she says. “But that simply isn’t true. Our treatments aren’t ingested, they are inhaled.” Salt is very healing, Shauna says. “Remember your grandma who told you to go gargle with salt water when your throat hurt?” Shauna asked. “That is because salt heals.” But Shauna says the best time to visit either the salt rooms or the flotation device is before you feel bad. “Come see us before you are sick to stay healthy,” she says. “Twenty sessions can boost your immune system for up to a year.” For more information about floatation and halotherapy, visit saltforyoursoul. com. Salt For Your Soul is located in Indianapolis at 3802 W. 96th St. Keep an eye out for the pet services that will be coming soon to Salt For Your Soul.

Owner Charity Rausch
OW N E R TA L K S E XC I T E M E N T O F R E O P E N E D N O RT H M I C H I G A N R O A D STO R E Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Eli Beaverson
Growing up, Charity Rausch had her eyes set on running a business of her own. “I went to IU and was going to be in retail,” Rausch says. “I apparently told everybody I was going to own my own business. I don’t really recall saying that, but that’s what everyone tells me I said.”
“But I was really excited to purchase this store where we live because it’s in the community where we can give back and be part of it, even more than we already are by living here with our children.”
“The birds came into the picture about 10 years ago, and the business didn’t come from the passion for birds,” she says with a laugh. “The business came first, and then the passion for birds came after.”
Originally founded in 1981 by John Carpenter, the first-ever Wild Birds Unlimited store was located in Broad Ripple. Since those humble beginnings, however, the backyard bird feeding and nature specialty store has grown to be the largest of its kind, with more than 330 locations throughout the United States and Canada.
THE PATH TO BIRDS
Now, Rausch and her husband Adam are franchise storeowners of two Wild Birds Unlimited locations in Carmel-Zionsville and Noblesville. With roots in the Zionsville area, the Rausch family is especially thrilled With these Indiana roots, Wild Birds to have reopened the store in their neck of Unlimited has its franchise office located the woods this past July. in Carmel. It’s here where Charity first got involved with the company after many “The Noblesville store is my baby, so I years of pursuing other retail-related love the Noblesville store,” Charity says. endeavors. 12 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atCarmel.com
Originally born in Roachdale, Ind., Charity studied at Indiana University before quickly entering the corporate retail sector. “I have worked in retail since I was in college, and that’s mostly been corporate retail,” she says. “I decided it was time to start a family, and corporate retail required a lot of traveling. It just didn’t feel like a balance with what I was looking for.” After planting roots in Zionsville, Charity accepted a job at Indiana University as a lecturer in the retail studies program.
“I did that for about four years, commuting from Zionsville to IU and teaching down there,” she says. “I absolutely adored that job. If my family hadn’t been a priority, I probably would still be doing that. But my family became the priority, and commuting from Zionsville to Bloomington was a bit of a challenge.” This led to her job at the Wild Birds Unlimited franchise office, working as a business coach to franchise store owners. “They got me hooked on the birds and the love of nature,” Charity says. “Our mission statement is, ‘We bring people and nature together with excellence,’ and they did that for me. I had never really been super connected like I am now with nature and birds, but that’s what the franchise office gave me.” Eventually, she and her husband decided they would like to purchase a franchise in the Indy area. And after patiently waiting for a while, the couple was granted the perfect opportunity in 2014, purchasing a store in Westfield that eventually became the current Noblesville store. “I was their business coach,” Charity says of the former Westfield owners. “They called and said, ‘Hey. Can you help us pull some information together for a potential buyer?’ And I said, ‘Actually, my husband and I are interested in buying your store.’ So that’s how we bought the first store.” EMBRACING THE COMMUNITY Embracing the Community With a second store now located in her own Carmel-Zionsville community, Rausch looks forward to sharing her passion for nature with neighbors. “Since I don’t live in Noblesville, it’s harder to stay connected and know what’s going on over there,” Charity says. “Whereas with the Zionsville community, I am already here. I know what’s going on and how we can get more involved in the community in regards to education on the birds and nature-related things.” In the future, Charity would especially like
to educate more youths in the area on the wildlife in their backyard.
a Wild Birds Unlimited store in her own backyard.
“I’m usually always geared toward youth with programs,” she says. “I feel like today’s youth is on technology a bit too much, especially since I have a teenager. So this is just a way to get kids connected and get them outside.”
“I’m just excited to be involved in the community a little bit more with the business,” she says.
All in all, Charity looks forward to owning

here are no barriers to entry into the arts, and Jon E. Gee and his wife Sondra, who was given the nickname “Mrs. Gee” by a tour accountant of John Mellencamp, embrace this concept by welcoming a wide range of ages into Carmel Music Academy. “No one is too young or too old to learn how to play,” Mrs. Gee says. Since opening in 2011, their youngest student was under two years old and their oldest is in their 80s. Each of their music rooms contain multiple instruments. At Carmel Music Academy, they feel that exposure to other instruments is important for growth. “A student often asks, ‘Can I try that?’ pointing to another instrument,” Jon E. Gee says. “And we say, ‘Sure! Let’s finish with your lesson and then you can pick that up and try it.’ Perhaps the gravitation to another instrument leads them to something that sparks an even deeper passion for music.” The philosophy of Carmel Music Academy is “the instrument will find the musician.” Case in point Jon’s musical journey to finding his main instrument, the bass. When Jon E. Gee was 16 he was introduced to a band that needed a bass player. When asked if he played bass, Jon replied, “Yes!” But He didn’t. He immersed himself in learning how to play this new instrument and from that day on he played bass every day. “I was 24 years old before I didn’t play everyday,” Jon says. “And I loved playing! It was the biggest rush of my life to play in a band.” The method of teaching at Carmel Music Academy may be considered unconventional, but it is natural to human instinct. “We teach how to read music, but we don’t teach it first,” Jon adds. “The students learn atCarmel.com / JANUARY 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 15
theory quickly once they start playing well. By playing first, they are listening and have reference points to the music. Reading music is easier once you are already playing. It suddenly makes sense to them — the student gets the connection.” Carmel Music Academy teaches music the same way we learn to speak, as children, when we learn to speak we begin with sounds. An infant is not handed a manual on the proper way to create these sounds. There is no coach other than excitable parents when a baby coos. Speech is intuitive and learned, initially, through hearing and mimicking sounds which is refined naturally over time. First by creating sounds, then words, sentences and, finally, formal structures. This process is parallel to learning music. At Carmel Music Academy, music theory is peppered into the lessons once someone has the sight, sound, tactical and auditory experience of playing. It’s a fact that a lot of rock stars and famous musicians do not read music. When the famous guitarist Chet Atkins was asked if he could read music, he replied, “Not enough to hurt my playing.” Muscle memory is powerful. Having a multi-sensory experience with music makes it easier to retain. Written music was created for communication purposes, which transcends across all spoken languages. This methodology is intuitive learning. Those who only know how to read music, very seldom retain their musical ability throughout their lifetime. Carmel Music Academy creates a family that reaches beyond lessons. Several Carmel Music Academy graduates are doing big things in the arts. Former students have performed with professional and touring acts such as, the Band Sugarland, the Jersey Boys Tour, pop music icon Debbie Gibson as well as other performing and touring professional acts. One former
Owners Jon and Sondra Gee
student, who is now a Phd doctor, lives in New York City and has his bass on a stand in his office on top of his desk, his nickname is the Bass Doctor. “Our goal is to make musicians for life,” Mrs. Gee adds. “Even if they don’t play professionally, they still play, they remember the life lessons.” A strong sense of community is experienced by students of Carmel Music Academy. Students have performed at Disney World and around the state of Indiana. Locally, Carmel Music Academy engages with the Carmel Community Playhouse, The Cat Theater, the Carmel Gazebo and Carmelfest. They have also performed at Pinheads in Fishers and the Indiana Landmarks Center. Their future goals are to have their students perform at famous destination locations. For example Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, and in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Jon E. Gee and Mrs. Gee’s passion for music philanthropy extends beyond Indiana. Jon serves as an Honorary Board member for Little Kids Rock, an organization providing the resources for schools and children who don’t have the resources for musical instruments. Other board members include Gene Simmons of KISS, Carlos Santana, Ziggy Marley, Bonnie Raitt, Paul Simon. and the late great B.B. King. Little Kids Rock provides music education and opportunities for underserved areas, where music has been taken out of schools. Little Kids Rock are in 45 states, helping more than 400 school districts with the resources to ensure music stays in schools. “Carmel Music Academy is the place that I never had as a kid,” says Jon, who was discouraged from pursuing a career in music by music professors. “There are a few of our students that I think should be signing autographs now.”
“We are very confident music will be one of their life long passions.” The point is: If you love it, if you really love it, and it is your passion, you need to pursue it because we make musicians for life.” Carmel Music Academy focuses on fostering passion and purpose with music. Jon and Mrs. Gee’s efforts speak loudly for how much they love what they do. They know there are
no barriers to entry to music, and if one is passionate enough, Carmel Music Academy will nurture that passion! Carmel Music Academy is located at 13295 N Illinois Street Suite #117 in Carmel. HARD RESET CERESET BRINGS INNOVATIVE BRAIN BALANCE TECHNOLOGY TO CARMEL Writer / Julie Yates . Photographer / Ellie Sophia Photography
everal years ago, Brenda Hanning and her family were struggling. Her middle school-aged son was dealing with behavior problems, school anxiety and panic attacks. Despite psychiatric treatment and prescribed medication, he was unable to sleep and consequently neither could Hanning. After two difficult years, she learned about Cereset, a noninvasive technology that relaxes stress and trauma patterns in the brain. Both Hanning and her son traveled to Chicago and tried the therapy. The results were so spectacular, she felt compelled to bring it to her community and she became a licensed provider. “A month after his sessions, he was back in the land of the living,” Hanning says. “He was able to go back to school and do the work of learning coping skills through therapy. During those worrisome years with my son’s struggles, my family and friends were very loving and supportive. However, I still felt very stressed and isolated with my heartbreak and worry. “I decided to have sessions,” she adds. “A few weeks afterward, I was sleeping all night, my energy was improving, and I wasn’t carrying a constant feeling of angst. I clearly remember driving during a bright beautiful day and a feeling of bliss came over me. It was a feeling of gratitude that I hadn’t been able to be in touch with for a few years.” Hanning went from being a provider to owning a franchise, which enables her to stay up to date with the newest technology Cereset offers. The wellness company is dedicated to helping people achieve restful and restorative sleep through a patented BrainEcho technology. The name Cereset comes from a combination of the words Cerebrum and reset. Documented research found on the company’s website supports the results Cereset promotes. When asked who could benefit from Cereset, Hanning answers, “It’s hard to imagine there being someone who couldn’t benefit from Cereset to some degree since 75% of Americans say they suffer from some form of stress, and there are an estimated 54% of the population who do not sleep well. More specifically, we work with anyone including military, stressed out moms, high-powered CEOs, athletes experiencing the lingering effects of concussions, and even actresses.” 20 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atCarmel.com
“I BELIEVE THAT CERESET IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST THING IN THE WORLD TO HELP PEOPLE SLEEP AND, BY ASSOCIATION, ASSIST THEM IN ACHIEVING THEIR HIGHEST POTENTIAL, HEALTH AND WELLNESS.”
The goal of Cereset is to reset the brain’s natural balance between the left and right hemispheres. During times of stress, a side can get stuck into a fight or flight mode or even frozen into a state of inertness and unable to focus or feel joy. An individual’s natural brain rhythms are recorded and converted into musical tones. The tones are played back so the brain can hear itself in real-time, thus enabling it to relax and reset back into balance.

5 TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
It’s that time of year again — the time when we all start thinking about what we’d like to do more of or be better at in the coming year. Did you know people have been setting New Year’s resolutions for more than 4,000 years! It’s assumed almost everyone has made a New Year’s resolution — and then broken it. It’s crazy, I know, but if you think about it, even if you fail, it’s a great way to kick off a new year. A resolution is technically something we choose to do, or not to do, but here are a few tips for how you can choose to keep those resolutions in 2020. 1. MAKE A LIST Many people make lists on the daily. Whether it’s a to-do list or shopping list, we like to see things we need to do and
what we’ve completed. It’s a visual thing. Sometimes just having something written down on paper helps you stick to it. It also makes it more real. So write out your resolutions on paper or even better get fancy and frame them! But even without a frame, put it somewhere you’ll see it every day so you are reminded of what you resolved to do. 2. C HOOSE THE RIGHT RESOLUTIONS The top three resolutions most years are related to health and fitness, but does that work for you? It might, but it might not. Don’t feel like you have to pick a resolution based on what everyone else is doing or usually does. Be original. Stay true to you and choose a resolution that really matters to you. If you can really get behind something, you’ll have better success with accomplishing it! 22 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atCarmel.com
3. TRY MINI-GOALS Mini goals or mini resolutions are a great way to reach a big goal with baby steps! It alleviates the making of a larger, terrifying and daunting resolution and instead breaks it up to make it more manageable. Mini goals are easier and typically require less time. Try to set a smaller goal for each month and by the time you complete all 12 months, you’ll have achieved that giant goal you weren’t quite sure you could take on in January. Setting mini-goals will help you accomplish resolutions in a more incremental way and stay on track all year long! 4. HAVE A BUDDY Accountability is a huge part of forging through tough times and keeping our resolutions in the New Year. Doing it on your own can be hard. But you don’t have
to do it all by yourself. Find a friend who has the same goals for the year or similar ones who can keep you motivated when times get tough. Even telling someone your resolutions can keep you accountable. They can ask you how things are going and understand when you need a little pick me up or break. It’s always more fun to do things with friends, and New Year’s resolutions are no different. 5. REWARD YOURSELF Everyone does better with a reward dangling in front of them. Rewards make us all feel good. Maybe if you are working on your food intake, you have a cheat day if you can get through two weeks of staying on track. Perhaps if you resolved to journal every day, once you’ve done it for a month, treat yourself with a cool new pen! If you were trying to give up those coffee shop visits to save more money, treat yourself to one cup of coffee if you stuck to it for 15 days in a row! Once you’ve completed a resolution, no matter how big or small, rewards can continue to help us move towards our goals. It keeps us motivated and reminds us that we are doing a good job. No matter how it goes this coming year, just do your best. Do what works for you and if you need help sticking to something, make sure to ask for help. Just choosing to embrace change or taking on new challenges in the New Year is a huge step for a lot of people and we believe in you! Wishing you the best success in your resolutions and a wonderful 2020!

WELL SERVED HAMILTON COUNTY COMMUNITY TENNIS ASSOCIATION CELEBRATES NEARLY 30 YEARS
Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided
Considering its longevity and the success of its myriad programs, it might be hard to believe that the Hamilton County Community Tennis Association (HCCTA) started with a modest $750 in grant money and a small group of diligent volunteers. In 1990, Helen Moser Petersen was serving as a volunteer for the United States Tennis Association (USTA), who, at the time, was
making a nationwide push for more local grassroots tennis associations. Petersen felt the timing was right to forge a local, nonprofit association in Central Indiana to promote the growth of tennis here and promptly set to work spreading the word and recruiting passionate volunteers. “There was some grant money available to start the community association, and I got $500 from USG Midwest and another $250 from the Central Indiana Tennis Association,” Petersen recalls. “I had atCarmel.com / JANUARY 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 25
had some experience working with the Indianapolis NJTL (National Junior Tennis & Learning), and I knew that getting some after-school tennis programs together would be a good start. Kids are the most important part of growing tennis. They’re always coming up and you never lose that resource.” Thus was born the HCCTA, the first - and still the only - nonprofit tennis organization in Hamilton County. Petersen and her group of volunteers began with one after-
school program in Noblesville, and the HCCTA has grown to include a variety of tennis classes and programs for ages 4 to adult in Fishers and Carmel year round. “Our mission is to use tennis to enrich communities in things like fitness, community service and diversity,” adds Petersen, a former English teacher who served as HCCTA president and director until 2014. “Everybody’s welcome regardless of ability, skin color, post office box - none of that matters as long as you want to come out and have some tennis fun.” While HCCTA does not own its own facility, the organization is able to provide tennis classes and clinics year-round for all ages at the Carmel Racquet Club (HCCTA participants do not need to be Club members), as well as several area schools including Fall Creek Junior High School, Carmel High School and Hamilton Southeastern Junior High School. “I’m proud that we’re year-round, and we’ve got a program going on nearly every day of the week,” Petersen says. “Since we’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit we’ve been able to go into schools too and do things like clinics and our large after-school program, which deals with hand-eye coordination and introducing kids to the racquet and having fun with it.” Petersen’s daughter Maggie Petersen currently serves as HCCTA executive director, in addition to teaching part time at Carmel Racquet Club and serving as tennis coach for Fall Creek Junior High School. “We do everything we can to bring tennis to people in their local community, whether that’s Fishers or Carmel,” Maggie says. “We always try to be accessible if people are interested or have questions and get them involved in the easiest way possible if they want to be a part of our programs.” In 2013, the HCCTA launched a Special Olympics tennis program in Carmel, which has since expanded to Boone County and Washington Township. Each summer for eight weeks, all three locations offer a free opportunity for special needs individuals, 26 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atCarmel.com
from junior high to adult ages, to participate once a week in tennis instruction, with snacks, bottled water, a gently used racquet and a t-shirt included. “Our instructors for the Special Olympics program are absolutely amazing,” Maggie says. “They do it for free and devote their time and energy, and they’re really the reason the program has been so successful.” The HCCTA also offers an educational program called Champion Reads, which Petersen started in 2011. Volunteers of all ages have authored seven chapter books at the third grade level for the program, which tells the stories of athletes like Arthur Ashe and Bille Jean King who overcame major obstacles to become champions in their sport. The program includes a 36-page teacher guide for each book, covering six subject areas, which Petersen has used for the last three years to incorporate the books into local summer camp programs. Petersen says the Champion Reads program is a perfect example of how the HCCTA ultimately aims to impart life lessons that transcend the game of tennis. “Tennis is fun, but it’s also a hook to teach people about the more important things in life,” she says. For more on the Hamilton County Community Tennis Association, to become a sponsor or make a donation, and for details about job openings or becoming a volunteer, call 317-5019145 or visit them online at hccta.org.

SWEENEY TODD
COMES TO THE CARMEL PALLADIUM FEBRUARY 21-22 Writer / Mandi Cheesman Photography Provided
Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the Stephen Sondheim musical that first appeared on Broadway in 1979.
The story of Sweeney Todd has been told in one way or another since the 1830s, and on “This story is not new, but this production is February 21 and 22 it will be told in a brand new,” Hymes says. new way on the stage of the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts. Both Hymes and Don Farrell, artistic director and co-founder of the ATI, have “Everyone is going to be enchanted and been hoping to collaborate on a project like enthralled with what we have been able to put this for many years. together,” says Janna Hymes, music director of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra (CSO). “This is a wonderful way for us to create Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of the production is the union of the CSO with the Actors Theatre of Indiana (ATI). The two artistic powerhouses are partnering to produce Sweeney Todd: The
great art together,” says Farrell, who is also playing the role of Sweeney Todd. The production will be a semi-staged presentation of the well-known musical. According to Hymes, semi-staged means

there won’t be as many sets as in a fully staged musical, but she adds that they won’t be missed. “The Palladium wasn’t built for this so it will be a very unique show, and the visual part will be stunning,” she says. This event will mark the first time the Palladium stage hosts a choir, actors, singers, an orchestra, sets, costumes, special lighting and additional elements involved in musical theater production. “Doing this on the Palladium stage is just so unique,” Farrell says, adding that the ATI usually performs in the Studio Theater, a 200-seat venue that is more versatile than the Palladium, a 1,600-seat concert hall.
“The Palladium stage is just magnificent and acoustically perfect.” Farrell says about 1,200 of the Palladium’s seats will be available for the audience because the remaining seats will be used for the production. “This is simply a must-see,” he says. Hymes agrees, referring to the production as “an event, a happening.” “There is an excitement in the air because this is going to be an experience that is going to feel different and new,” she says. Sweeney Todd tells the tale of an unjustly exiled barber who returns to London to seek revenge on the judge who framed him. Although well known for its dark side, Farrell says the musical is also quite funny. “A lot of the other productions, especially the movies, didn’t tap into the humor of the play,” Farrell says. “People are really going to appreciate the humorous scenes in our production.” Both Farrell and Hymes hope Sondheim would appreciate the production as a special tribute - the famed composer was born on March 22, 1930, and the Palladium production will happen almost exactly a month before his 90th birthday. Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts is located at 1 Center Green in Carmel. For tickets and more info, call 317843-3800 and visit thecenterpresents.org.
