When Larry and Jenny Hoover opened Brunchies restaurant in Carmel in 2006, they aimed to fill a void in the area. The north side of Indianapolis, he says, simply didn’t have many breakfast dining options.
Today, much has changed about Carmel, including its restaurant landscape. However, Larry says his business remains what it was when it first began. The restaurant even has some of its same customers who came in the day it opened.
Its core clientele isn’t the only thing that remains constant. Hoover didn’t make a “I wanted to offer a nice, safe, clean, friendly, single change to his menu until just a few Christian restaurant when I opened,” he years ago. says. “I want my place to be your place. I want people to come in here and feel The menu includes a plethora of traditional comfortable like they would at home.” options, with the most popular breakfast 6 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2020 / atCarmel.com
item being the All-American Classis — two eggs, bacon or sausage, toast, and hash browns or tater tots. Brunchies offers breakfast throughout the day and lunch starting at 10:30 a.m. “I’ve been told I have the best breakfast in Carmel,” Larry says. For lunch, its bestsellers include made-fromscratch breaded tenderloin and onion rings. Dishes range in cost from $4-12, with most offered for $7 or $8.
When Larry did finally decide to make changes to his menu, he did so based on customer requests. Some asked for healthier options, so he added wraps. Others wanted tater tots, an item Brunchies now goes through 90 pounds of in a given week. “I do cater to my customers,” Larry says. Larry and Jenny met while students at North Central High School in Indianapolis, where Jenny is the treasurer. The couple owned Tin Star in Broad Ripple, selling the Old West jail-themed restaurant in 1998. But Larry has been working in restaurants more than 40 years — all the way back to age 13.
“Basically, what we did at Brunchies,” says Larry Hoover, “is take a little bit from every restaurant I ever managed or owned, and incorporate it.”
“My wife and I get to know our regulars by name,” he says. “At any given time, I could rattle off 50 or 60 names of people sitting in this restaurant.”t
His experience includes a variety of areas of the restaurant business, from operational to sales, in casual, family and fine dining. He has waited tables, washed dishes, served as a manager, and cooked. At Brunchies you can still find him behind the grill.
Brunchies has 17 employees. The Hoovers’ children were among those working there while growing up, and Larry’s mother also helped launch the business. That family vibe keeps longtime and newer customers coming back.
Brunchies, located at 13732 N. Meridian St. in Carmel, is open 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. To learn more, visit brunchiesdinercarmel. com. Find Brunchies on Facebook for more information and specials.

I N V I T E P R I N C E S S E S T O YO U R PA R T Y Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
Over a decade ago, Chelsea Couture was vacationing in Mexico with her mom (Crystal) and sister (Claire) when inspiration struck. “We saw people making crazy balloon hats and we thought it would be fun to start a family balloon art business together,” Chelsea says, noting that all three of them nurture a creative spirit. They came home and learned the tricks of the trade, then formed Balloongenuity in 2009. Though it was a successful business endeavor, they often fielded questions from revelers who were in search of, say, a magician or a clown. Then they began to notice a trend as more and more people were interested in inviting a reallive princess to their party or event. “A woman called and said she’d like to have Rapunzel at her daughter’s party—not just
to sit and look pretty but to sing, draw, and interact with the kids,” Chelsea says. “She wanted a fairytale come to life.” Chelsea and her family vowed to do just that. It wasn’t a stretch given that the entire family has a theatre/singing/songwriting/ artistry background. “If we were going to do this, we wanted to do it right,” Chelsea says, who launched Happily Ever After Productions in 2012, starting with just four princesses. “Children were in absolute awe to get to meet their favorite princesses,” Chelsea says. There’s the classic princesses such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, and Alice in Wonderland. But the Little Mermaid, the Frog Princess Tiana, and the Snow Princesses (Anna and Elsa) are also very popular. Soon after launching, parents began asking Chelsea, “What do you offer for boys?” So, they invited select 8 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2020 / atCarmel.com
superheroes to join in the fun, and now Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and Captain America (among others) visit parties. The craze has definitely exploded. “Initially, we thought the princesses would be a side thing to our balloon artistry and really it’s the other way around,” Chelsea says. The highly popular Princess Package is a 1.5-hour party that includes entertainment by one character, who is accompanied by the client’s choice of balloon artist, face painter or glitter tattoo artist. The princess presents the birthday girl with a tiara and then provides a musical storytelling show, participates in the cake cutting ceremony, and delivers a special song. If parents also want to incorporate a pinata or something else into the party, they are more than welcome to do so. But for the most part, the princesses are the entertainment.
Unlike at a Disney theme park where kids’ time with characters is limited to a stand-in-line chance to snap a photo and grab an autograph, at these parties, the guests have a chance to chat at length with princesses. “Kids want to know every backstory so they’ll ask about the princess’ parents and their pets, how they got here, everything!” Chelsea says. Happily Ever After will accommodate parties and events within a one-hour driving radius of the Geist area. Though they have traveled as far away as Cincinnati, Louisville, and Chicago, they stay plenty busy just in the Indy area. For instance, in May Aladdin and Jasmine attended Chick-fil-A night. And earlier this spring Moana, Snow White and friends went to an Indianapolis Indians game where they mingled with fans of all ages. Each year the princesses also go to the Whitestown Parks & Rec’s Christmas Ball in Whitestown where princesses engage in a meet-n-greet with attendees. “We see a bump in business in the spring and fall with seasonal festivals and another bump at the Fourth of July and Christmas, but overall we remain steady year-round,” Chelsea says. Several of their princesses have moved on to engage in other communities, booking jobs on cruise ships and even living in the promised land—Disney World. It’s not surprising given that these princesses and superheroes love what they do. “They all really do enjoy interacting with the children,” Chelsea says, noting that they have a really loyal fan base. “Some families will book four or five years in a row, choosing a different princess each time,” Chelsea says. “We feel blessed to be able to do this full-time. We have the best jobs ever!” For more information, call 317-498-3473, email indyprincessparties@aol.com or visit happilyeverafterproductions.com. atCarmel.com / FEBRUARY 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 9
CARING & SHARING 100+ WOMEN WHO CARE HAMILTON COUNTY SETS HIGHER FUNDRAISING GOAL FOR 2020 Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided by Ellie Sophia Photography & 100+ Women Who Care
For 13 years, Mary Beth Woehrle lived in Greenwood where she was involved with 100+ Women Who Care Johnson County, an organization that benefits local 501(c)(3) charities. When she moved to Noblesville in 2007, she was eager to join 100+ Women Who Care Hamilton County but found that such a group didn’t exist. So Woehrle rallied some friends and got one going. “We, as moms, don’t just want to stay busy driving our kids around to their games and events,” Woehrle says. “We want to make an impact in our community, and this organization is a great way to do that.” She acknowledges, however, that between work, motherhood and life management, women are often stretched thin. As a result it can be difficult to carve out time for charity work. That’s what makes 100+ Women Who Care so great. All they ask is for women to gather quarterly for onehour meetings.
The meetings are structured the same way each quarter. Any member who is current in their giving can nominate their choice of a local 501(c)(3) organization registered within Hamilton County. All nominations go into a hat and three are pulled out. Representatives from the three finalists then give a brief, informal presentation that describes their charity’s purpose and mission. The group asks follow-up questions and then vote to determine which non-profit should receive the donation for the quarter. “Each person writes a $100 check right then and there to the non-profit chosen, to make a collective, impactful donation,” Woehrle says. The first 100+ Women Who Care Hamilton County meeting took place in August 2017. It started out with three co-founders Woehrle, Dana Randall, and Carolyn Deines - each reaching out to their own circles of women to encourage participation. It has since grown as members have told friends, colleagues and neighbors about the group. “It’s been a grassroots, word-of-mouth kind of thing rather than a strategic marketing 10 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2020 / atCarmel.com
plan,” Randall says. “It’s been great, though we would like to continue to spread the word that we exist.” Currently, 45 women come consistently. Though they ask women to commit to a year at a time, they do not track the giving. If someone comes at the start of the year but doesn’t make it to another meeting until the end of the year, that’s okay. They also allow the annual $400 membership amount to be split among friends, colleagues or siblings. “We want to bring in as much money as we can for charities, yet at the same time we want to make this simple to manage for women to be a part of,” Randall says. Since May the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation has matched donations for up to 50 percent of total dollars raised (up to a $5,000 match). “Now, when a group wins they not only win the 100+ Women Who Care donations but they also get a grant from this foundation,” Woehrle says. “For nonprofits, especially those still in their infancy stage, to get awarded a $5,000 donation and have it matched by 50 percent is huge for growth,
and makes a huge impact in the types of services these organizations can provide.” In the past 2.5 years, 100+ Women Who Care Hamilton County has recognized ten charities and donated more than $50,000. They have donated to organizations such as HAND, Inc., which addresses the housing needs of low- and moderate-income individuals, families and senior citizens, the Fishers Youth Assistance Program, which strengthens youth and families through community involvement, Redemption Rescue, a foster care program for sick, injured and abandoned animals, and the Megan S. Ott Foundation, which provides care packages for women suffering from breast cancer. “The beauty of this group is that we are always hearing about charities we didn’t know existed and all of these great things happening in Hamilton County,” Woehrle says. The group’s goal for 2020 is to have more women from surrounding areas like Westfield, Noblesville and Carmel take part, in order to impact charities in those communities as well. They are constantly striving to get 100 women to consistently attend quarterly meetings. “Still, that’s not the end zone for us,” Woehrle says. “After all, the group is called 100+ Women. We’d love to continue to grow.” Each quarter the group meets at 7 p.m. around the middle of the month at the Delaware Township Community Center in Fishers. Meetings in 2020 are slated for February 12, May 13, August 19 and November 18. Guests are welcome. “Ultimately we just want more people involved because the more that are involved, the greater the impact on the community,” Randall says. OLIVER’S TWIST
LOCAL GIFT & CARDS SHOP OFFERS UNIQUE INVITATIONS FOR COMMUNITY
Owner Kristyn Davidson Writer / Annelise Hanshaw Photographer / Belinda Russell
You can’t give Kristyn Davidson just any card. As the owner of Oliver’s Twist, a paper goods and gift shop, she breathes designer cards. Davidson treasures a special card from her husband. The front made her smile with a picture of a sloth. “Slow clap,” the card said. Inside, her husband congratulated her on opening a new storefront. He admired her hard work. Davidson didn’t intend to be a small business owner. Her creativity and her mom, Becky Oliver, swept her into this role, and she loves where she landed. Oliver’s Twist began to take shape as Davidson planned her wedding. She ordered invitations locally and began making her own programs and place cards. Then, she helped her friends plan and proof their invitations. Eventually, her mom asked her if she’d like to make an invitation business. They quickly filed as an LLC. Oliver began her job as Davidson’s business partner — though they aren’t ones for titles. They just enjoy working as mother and daughter, and it’s not as complicated as people assume, Davidson says. Oliver inspired Davidson to take the leap into being a full-time business owner. Davidson had taught at an elementary school for a few years, but Oliver’s Twist began to steal her away. “If you’re not sure, it’s time to try something new while you’re young,” Oliver says. The words pushed her into the career change, but an entrepreneurial spirit had been developing since childhood. Davidson’s father owned a lumber company when she was a child, and she learned to work hard and be kind. Davidson seeks to be welcoming to her customers when she works. But even when she’s away, the store’s bright, cheerful atmosphere bring her message. 14 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2020 / atCarmel.com
“There rarely goes by a day I can’t call a customer by name who comes into the shop,” Davidson says. “That’s what I love about a small business — I love the community aspect of it.” Connecting with people is in the business. That’s where she gets the motto “Paper + People.” “It’s about the people in your life that you’re sending these mailings to, and what they mean to you and what your card says about you,” Davidson says. Davidson likes connecting people through invitations and cards. Her personal routine is sending at least two cards a week. If there’s no occasion, she sends some just for fun. Davidson does acknowledge that not all mail is created equal. While a quirky letterpress card is sweet for friendly letters, large occasions require a detailoriented approach. Oliver’s Twist has a section just for brides and serves around 80 a year. Davidson likes to meet with the brides around three times to get their style and voice. Davidson picks out the invitations herself, and sometimes with her husband, and ensures her collection is beautiful and succinct. She wants to make it an experience for the brides, one you can’t get ordering online. Oliver’s Twist offers the beauty in snail mail. Davidson loves the card her husband gave her to congratulate her move to Carmel City Center. It’s a token far greater than a “good job, Babe” text or a Facebook post. Paper sets the moment apart. Oliver’s Twist is located at Veteran’s Way, 800 S Range Line Rd Suite #255. It’s open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Thursday, and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. from Friday – Saturday. THE INDIANA UNIVERSITY HEALTH JOE & SHELLY SCHWARZ CANCER CENTER OFFERS PATIENTS HOLISTIC, INDIVIDUALIZED CARE Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
The Indiana University Health Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center, an 88,000 square foot, two-story facility that just opened on the south side of the IU Health North Hospital campus, is a godsend for cancer patients and their families, who were consulted from the get-go about the project so the cancer center staff could learn how best to serve patients in a holistic way. They found that patients craved a warm, caring,
comforting environment in which to heal, so while the building is big and beautiful, it still offers that cozy, community-focused feel. “We’ve taken that imperative as part of our journey in constructing both the programming and the physical facility of the cancer center,” says Dr. Sara Jo Grethlein, Medical Director of the IU Health Schwarz Cancer Center. They started by streamlining the check-in process. She notes that in the past, patients 16 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2020 / atCarmel.com
had to check in at multiple times to see different doctors on the same day. “Now, we have coordinated all of that so that, from the patient’s perspective, it feels like one visit that is coordinated for them,” Dr. Grethlein says. And anything that can make the cancer journey less exhausting is welcome. “When someone is going through a complex cancer journey, they are often
here. The way they receive the expert care from the full clinical team is going to be seamless and all under one roof.” Three existing practices are coming into the space to create the foundation of the center — the Breast Cancer Center at IU Health North Hospital, the IU Health Central Indiana Cancer Centers, who are a part of the IU School of Medicine’s Division of Hematology and Oncology, and the IU Health Springmill Infusion Center. “We’re starting off with teams of physicians who have already been serving patients in this community,” Dr. Grethlein adds. getting chemotherapy and radiation at the same time, and having to travel to two different facilities every day or see doctors in multiple locations, which adds to the distress,” says Dr. Grethlein, who is also a Professor of Medicine, Hematology & Oncology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. “Patients and their families are excited about having onestop shopping by having all of this care combined under one roof.” During the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the IU Health Schwarz Cancer Center, Beth Nikides, an IU Health primary care clinic manager who is also currently a cancer patient herself, spoke, saying, “As a resident of Hamilton County, I’m so glad that these services are available just 10 minutes from my home. I can choose to receive my immunotherapy at the IU Health Schwarz Cancer Center. Parking is easy, less walking to get to the services I need and the added plus is my short drive home.” Dr. Kandice Ludwig, Medical Director of Breast Care at IU Health North Hospital and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgical
Breast Oncology with the IU School of Medicine, maintains that making the cancer process easier on the patient is critical.
Such doctors include Dr. Kathy Miller, well-renowned and respected in the breast cancer community, and Dr. Rich Zellars, Chairman of the Department of “At a time when our patients are Radiation Oncology at the IU School of experiencing a level of stress and worry Medicine, who is well known for his work that they probably have never experienced in making the radiation journey easier before, making access to care easier and for breast cancer patients. They’re also more convenient is a big deal,” Dr. Ludwig introducing a brand-new thoracic oncology says. “At a time when clinical coordination program, a pulmonologist and critical care and collaboration is pivotal, having the entire team —from diagnostics to surgery to interventionalist, gynecologic oncologist infusion and radiation — all in one location and ENT physicians. here at the IU Health Schwarz Cancer Dr. Ludwig calls the IU Health Schwarz Center, that’s [also] a big deal.” Cancer Center a game-changer for patients and their families. Doug Puckett, IU Health president of the Indianapolis Suburban Region, calls the IU Health Schwarz Cancer Center a way to fulfill their promise of meeting patient needs and delivering on unique personal experiences for each one of their patients.
“We’re really excited about the opportunity of what this building has been able to do and what we are prepared to do from the way we deliver services,” Puckett says. “It’s going to be different when patients come
DR. SARA JO GRETHLEIN
“We’re going to bring our diverse and important cancer care services and the experts who deliver that care under one roof. And when patients need it, it will also serve as a front door to a truly comprehensive system of sub-specialty cancer care, including leading-edge research with our IU School of Medicine colleagues,” Dr. Ludwig adds. The center is utilizing nurse navigators to help patients understand what they can expect even before arriving. In addition, from a programming perspective, they have a top-notch radiation facility not only for what they call External Beam Radiation, but also for brachytherapy to provide radiation directly to tumors and minimize side effects to patients. The integrated health program aims to

nourish the whole patient by supporting them physically, psychologically and nutritionally. This support may include art therapy, cosmetology, tai chi, cooking classes or technology-driven workshops. Their state-of-the-art infusion suite has 22 slots for patients to receive cancer therapy, 16 of which are in the bright airy common treatment room divided by sliding wooden doors. The other six rooms are private for patients who are either feeling unwell, fighting infection or simply prefer receiving treatment in an individualized space. In mid-2020, in partnership with physicians at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, the IU Health Schwarz Cancer Center will open its adolescent and young adult unit — the only one in the region. “Besides giving these young patients their own space, we’re going to have experts in helping with fertility preservation, making sure that as we are curing their cancer, we are preserving their future,” says Dr. Grethlein, who is grateful to the naming donors who made this center possible. Joe Schwarz had throat cancer, but Dr. Grethlein notes that cancer failed to steal Joe’s voice because his wife, Shelly, became his voice. “She spoke for herself and for Joe in helping to design this entity for the next generation,” Dr. Grethlein says. “Shelly walked beside her husband on his cancer journey and she remembers vividly what made a difference for him and for their family throughout this journey.” Now, many more cancer patients will feel that support and love, too. “Between our psychologists, social workers, dietitians, doctors, nurses, medical assistants and administrative staff, we will be there for our patients,” Dr. Grethlein adds. VILLAGE HOME ZIONSVILLE 27 East Cedar Street Zionsville, IN 317- 973-5252
fter spending almost 12 years away from Zionsville, Dion and Suzanne Deason have again brought their unique brand of full-service interior design services to the Village. Located at 27 East Cedar Street, their new shop, Village Home Zionsville, offers a brick-and-mortar space the couple has filled with eclectic furnishings covering a multitude of styles. “It’s a nice feeling to come back home,” Suzanne says. “People have been coming in to say hello and let us know they are glad we are back. We love how local residents support the Village, and how the Chamber of Commerce promotes the businesses in it.” Dion says the couple enjoys the Zionsville’s sense of community. “We could live anywhere in Indianapolis, but we chose Zionsville and knew we wanted to be right in the Village,” he says. The Deasons’ prior shop, At Home in the Village, was housed in a historic church on North Main Street. It was open from 1999 until 2005, when the couple sold the building to artist Nancy Noel and it became known as the Sanctuary. The Deasons then moved to Dion’s hometown of Greenwood, South Carolina, and established a business called Design Elements. Upon the sale of their business in mid-October last year, Village Home opened its doors the Friday after Thanksgiving.
“It was always part of the plan to move back to Zionsville and be close to Suzanne’s family,” Dion says. “We started working on coming back a few years ago, but with a busy schedule of projects already in the works, timing was instrumental in completing previous commitments. Design Elements was in an 1840 antebellum mansion previously owned by the Mayor and was purchased by a business that wanted a historical property.” Suzanne says the couple kept in touch with established Zionsville clients during their South Carolina stint.

“Other customers are from many places like Colorado, Michigan and Chicago,” she says. “We have seen them through second and third homes, and are now even doing their kids’ homes.” Village Home offers a one-stop experience for anyone looking to redecorate one room or even an entire house - regardless of budget. The Deasons are adept at overseeing both renovations and new construction. They design plans, research and order products, handle scheduling, and oversee installation. Dion’s specialty is custom kitchen and bath cabinetry.
location. In the future, the Deasons plan on doing similar projects in the Zionsville area. “We are very excited to be back in the community of Zionsville, and to be part of this historical village that has so much to offer,” Dion says.
Inside the shop, customers can find items of many styles, ranging from a $17 hand-painted fish plaque to the Deasons’ own line of upholstered furniture produced in North Carolina. The store is designed and decorated based on the products and items that Dion and Suzanne would use on Interior Design projects. “All the bases are covered - we don’t stick with just one style,” Suzanne says. “Much of our work is custom and we can order whatever the customer wants. We carry two custom upholstery private label lines that include sofas and chairs which are very popular, and so are our unique dining chairs and tables for dining rooms or kitchens. We don’t have a set, identifiable style. The rooms we design don’t look like us, they look like the customer.”

For the last five years, the Deasons have been purchasing homes in various neighborhoods, completely gutting, redesigning and renovating them. After completion, they fully furnish and decorate the homes, using them as a decorator ShowHome. All ticket proceeds were donated to the Humane Society of Greenwood, of which Suzanne was on the board of directors. Proceeds from the ShowHomes are contributed to the campaign to relocate the facility to a much needed new

POLISH POTTERY & GIFTS STORE OFFERS COLLECTABLE & COLORFUL STONEWARE IN CARMEL
Owner Ruthanne Burgard
Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Glenda White
“All it takes is your first piece, and you’ll get hooked on it,” says Ruthanne Burgard. Burgard, owner of Out of the Blue Polish Pottery & Gifts, located in the Carmel City Center at 727 Hanover Place, speaks from experience. She discovered the beautiful yet functional pottery produced in Boleslawiec, Poland while living in Germany during the early 2000s. Her initial purchase was a piece of bakeware. She was surprised at how evenly food cooked in it. Plus, it was very durable and easy to clean. Before long she found herself avidly collecting multipatterned and brightly colored matching pieces such as serving bowls and sets of dinner plates. Once she and her husband returned to the United States, she wanted to share her love of the Polish stoneware with others. In 2006, she opened a store in Monticello, Illinois. Over the years it drew a number of patrons from Indiana, so Burgard decided to establish a second shop in Carmel. “I chose Carmel because I just love it,” she says. “It has such a focus on art and design. The response from the community has been great so far. We have people that come in because they already know about Polish pottery. Others wander in without knowing about it and are taken with the beauty of the pottery and all the different designs. They are surprised that it can actually be used for baking.” Burgard sources the pottery from three different factories in Boleslawiec. Each piece is individually made and then handpainted with a sponge stamping technique. A special lead-free glaze is applied and then the stoneware is put in a kiln which is heated to more than 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The process yields a product that is not only chip resistant but can also be used in the microwave besides being dishwasher safe. “I use my stoneware pieces every day and they still look the same as they did when I first got them some 15 years ago,” Burgard says.
No two pieces are alike, but they all complement each other. The varied spectrum of colors ranges from blue and white to rich red backgrounds embellished with bright yellow daisies. Customers can find platters, teapots, butter dishes and canisters — just to name a few of the options. The most popular items are the baking dishes or mugs which range in price anywhere from $20 to $50, according to the level of intricacy of the design. There are some traditional patterns which a seasoned collector could identify, but the store also carries some unique, oneof-a-kind signature items, too.
“I CHOSE CARMEL BECAUSE I JUST LOVE IT. IT HAS SUCH A FOCUS ON ART AND DESIGN.”

IT’S A DATE! 6 VALENTINE’S DAY DATE NIGHT IDEAS Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, you probably fall into one of two buckets - prepared or unprepared. There’s a few things to remember when it comes to the love that surrounds this heart-filled day. Valentine’s Day is just that, just another day. So don’t put too much pressure on yourself when you are trying to plan. Anytime you get to spend with that special person should be enough. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be a great day or night! But if you are still working out the details of how your day of cupid will go down, here’s a few ideas to get you started.
1. GAME NIGHT As kids, we tend to think of game night as a family thing to do. But why not play just as couples? Sometimes we all need time to unwind and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun. A little friendly competition can really create some friendly tension between you and your partner. There are a lot of breweries and coffee shops that could make this an easy night out and a lot of them have game libraries to use so you don’t need to bring your own, unless you want to. If staying in, grab a charcuterie tray, some champagne and your favorite board game and enjoy some one-on-one time. 26 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2020 / atCarmel.com
2. COOKING CLASS A couple that cooks together, stays together, right? Or eats well together! Check out local cooking schools or even local cooking stores for special classes just for Valentine’s Day. Many of them have classes all year round but add a few more during this time of year. The best part about this is that you’ll have a great dinner at the end of the night and probably a few drinks in between. This is also a great one if you are open to doing something NOT on Valentine’s Day. They often have many options around this time and if you are flexible with dates you might be able to find just the right menu!
3. FONDUE AT HOME It seems like fondue restaurants are always the first to book up this time of year but if you are into fondue, it can be done at home too! Order a fondue set if you don’t already have one and purchase pre-cut food items so you don’t have to do a ton of work. Light a fire, lay out some pillows to sit on and pour a couple glasses of wine and enjoy yourself. This is also a fun night for the family if you don’t have a sitter! 4. A STAY AWAY If you think about it at least a little in advance, book a night at a hotel for you and your loved one. Maybe choose a place a little nicer than you might normally stay or try a new spot! Feel free to select one with enticing amenities. Enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant downstairs, a couple’s massage in the spa or a drink at the bar before heading back up to bed. If you are the more quiet type, maybe order room service, rent a movie and cozy into bed. Even enjoy sleeping in the next morning. There’s so many options with a quick night away! 5. P LANETARIUM OR STARGAZING Almost everyone loves looking up at the stars. There’s something about that great, big open sky that is so intriguing. Depending on the weather, you might grab a blanket (or two) two chairs or the bed of a truck, a warm winter cocktail and just look up. There are some really neat apps out there that help you identify the constellations. Or, if you both know them, make a game of who can find the most or the quickest. If sitting outside isn’t in the cards, you might check out a local planetarium (if you have one) where you can spend the evening. 6. VISIT A MUSEUM There are so many museums these days for kids and adults alike. But if you have kids, how often do you visit without them? It’s funny to think of going to a kids’ museum or a history museum in the evening without kids, but believe me, there’s a lot of fun to be had! Experience things without your kids pulling on you, or, if you don’t have kids, pick a place you might not have visited before. Sometimes there are even special evening events. Have a happy Valentine’s Day! atCarmel.com / FEBRUARY 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 27
