GOOD DAY AT THE CAFÉ

Manager Mariana Sauceda & Executive Chef Demetrio Estrada

CAFFÈ BUONDÌ BRINGS ITALIAN BREAKFAST & LUNCH CONCEPT TO CARMEL Writer / Julie Yates . Photographer / Amy Payne

AS PEOPLE WALK THROUGH THE GLASS DOOR OF CAFFÈ BUONDÌ, THEY IMMEDIATELY REALIZE THE NEW CARMEL BREAKFAST AND LUNCH SPOT IS NOT JUST A TYPICAL, LOCAL CAFÉ.

It is rooted in traditional Italian coffee culture and has a European sensibility. Located next to its sister restaurant, Convivio, at 11529 Spring Mill Road, the eatery has a unique identity all its own. Owners Emilio Cento and Andrea Melani were already the proprietors of Convivio’s two locations, one in Carmel and the other in Zionsville, when they decided to try something diverse. Gathering their experience from running their Open Table’s 2018 Diner’s Choice Award-winning restaurants known for fresh pasta and innovative takes on Italian dishes, they were ready for a new challenge. 6 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atCarmel.com

When asked what prompted the partners to open Caffè Buondì, Melani broke into laughter, “Because we are crazy!” “The space next door to the Carmel location of Convivio became available,” he adds. “It seemed like the perfect opportunity to try something different. We wanted something spacious, bright and modern, yet relaxing. And with a completely different menu.” Since it is open from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Cento and Melani have developed a menu that they feel is unique. They still have some American

favorites — patrons can order eggs any way they want them. Many items, however, are definitely novel to midwestern palates. “We serve frittatas, which are Italian omelets, right to the table in a cast iron skillet,” Melani says. “Italians like sweet stuff and we feature fresh artisan pastries. Our buckwheat galette is filled with ham, Gruyere cheese and egg. We have several European open-faced sandwiches.” Most menu options are priced at between $8 to $13. Choices are extensive and include lemon ricotta cheese pancakes, filled crepes and one-of-a-kind variations of French toast. Fresh juices, smoothies and bowls are also available. A toast board can be ordered and various jams, jellies and honey can be sampled. There is even an Italian influenced chicken and waffle served with eggs. For those who are leaning more towards lunch food, large salads, several kinds of pizza and some pasta dishes are available.

“Our intention is to source locally as much as we can,” Melani says. “We use purveyors such as Fischer Farms, Smoking Goose and Trader’s Point Creamery. But the coffee beans we use are from the number one coffee company in Italy — Lavazza.” The espresso bar serving coffees such as cappuccinos, macchiatos and other Italian specialties, anchors the space. Nearby is a lounge area with a small newsstand comprised of magazines, papers and a couple of iPads available for perusing the news of the day. Over by the fireplace is a large table available for groups and meet-ups. “Buon di means ‘Good Day’ in Italian,” Melani says. “We want customers to feel connected to the Italian culture and food. We want them to find this as a place to relax and experience starting their day in European bistro style.”

LOCAL ORGANIZATION CHANGES NAME TO THE INDIANA CENTER FOR PREVENTION OF YOUTH ABUSE & SUICIDE, CONTINUES FOCUS ON HELPING CHILDREN FEEL SAFE Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Sexual abuse is often shrouded in shame, secrecy and silence — and this is especially true when the victim is a child. In addition, research has shown that there is a direct link between childhood trauma/abuse and suicide ideation, suicide attempts and suicide completion. By the time Chaucie Quillen, a resident of Hamilton County, finally worked up the nerve to report the decade of sexual abuse

she had endured from her father, she had suffered great emotional and psychological trauma. It took such a toll that in 1995, at the tender age of 21, she took her own life. Quillen’s death rocked the tight-knit community, who wanted to find a way to not only honor Chaucie but also help prevent other children from suffering the same horror. In 2001, Chaucie’s Place, a 501(c)(3), was formed by members of the Hamilton County community. Though they began as a child advocacy center, 10 years ago they shifted their focus to prevention. They also recently changed their name to atCarmel.com / MARCH 2019 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 9

the Indiana Center for Prevention of Youth Abuse & Suicide. “We will always honor Chaucie’s memory, but we found that the name Chaucie’s Place didn’t really reflect what we currently do,” says Melissa Peregrin, Executive Director of the center. Their main focus is on prevention, so in that vein they spend a lot of time going into elementary school classrooms and other youth-serving organizations (like churches), educating students about the concept

“Think of it like any other body safety rule such as wearing your seatbelt in a car or donning a helmet when you bike,” Peregrin says. “Learning this stuff doesn’t mean anything bad is going to happen. We’re just teaching kids how to stay safe in case it does.” Acct. Serv.

According to Peregrin, Indiana has been above the national average in suicide since 1999. That’s why she maintains that the more we create a community that knows how to respond to suicide, the better. Job #:

Over $1 billion in assets under management for clients.

“We’re not training anyone to be a health professional, but suicide is the most preventable death there is,” Peregrin says. “When people recognize warning signs and risk factors of someone in trouble, this training can teach them what to say and do to keep someone alive long enough to help them.”

“Every one of us can be that person,” she says. “If we feel comfortable asking questions and pointing people to the right resources, that can save a life. It can be as simple as asking, ‘Are you okay?’ A sincere human connection

is one of the greatest preventable measures we have.”

A free, public charter school serving students in grades 6-12 with smaller class sizes and an individualized academic approach

Perhaps the most important aspect that staff with the center drive home is to impress upon children that abuse is never their fault because perpetrators reinforce the notion that it is in order to keep the child quiet. “Learning, and believing, that no blame lies on you is how one begins to heal,” says Peregrin, who herself is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. “It happened when I was eight and it took me to age 40 before it sunk in that I was not at fault.” Currently, the Indiana Center for Prevention of Youth Abuse & Suicide serves schools in Grant and Boone Counties as well as several schools in Marion County. Peregrin would like to expand the coverage and notes that if every parent of every child they served donated just one dollar, that would cover the cost of the program for that institution. Ultimately, Peregrin would like to blanket the entire state with knowledge and education towards prevention. “I want to have an entire state that knows what to do when a child is being abused,” she says. “An entire state that knows how to ask the questions to help someone. And children who know how to protect themselves.” The Indiana Center for Prevention of Youth Abuse & Suicide is located at 4607 E. 106th Street in Carmel. For more information, call 317-759-8008.

Elaine Mancini, Executive Director

The Museum of Miniature Houses Celebrates 25 Years in Carmel Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Glenda White

It might feature diminutive, indeed often tiny, exhibits, but Carmel’s Museum of Miniature Houses and Other Collections has developed a presence on Main Street that is anything but small. In 1993 Nancy Lesh, Suzie Moffett and Suzanne Landshof — three Indianapolisbased women with a passion for crafting miniature houses and scenes — decided it would be worth their while to found a museum in a converted farmhouse to ensure their own hard work, and that of others, was not lost to future generations. The museum opened formally in August of that year, and now features seven display rooms as well as a museum shop visited by folks from all over the country.

“The three founders had heard about a woman who had been making and collecting miniatures for many years, and all of her collection was lost when she passed away,” says Elaine Mancini, executive director of the museum since 2014. “They didn’t want that to happen to them, so they decided to open the museum to have a place to show and store miniatures and introduce the craft to others.” Twenty-five years later, the museum’s seven display rooms showcase approximately 30 finished houses dating as far back as 1861 and 50 to 60 miniature room settings at any one time. Most of the houses and scenes, many of which are donations, are works of the creators’ imaginations, but visitors can also study a miniature replica of Sherlock Holmes’ famous 221B Baker Street sitting room, and an exact replica of a Mexican 12 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atCarmel.com

home belonging to the Ball family, known for producing Ball canning jars. Mancini is quick to point out the difference between dollhouses and miniature houses. “Dollhouses are meant to be played with, and miniatures are for display and center around the art of miniature making itself,” she explains. “Miniature houses also stick strictly to a scale — usually one inch to one foot, and some people work in half-inch or even quarter-inch, which gets even harder. The people who make them are rigorous about sticking to scale.” And the craft of miniatures consists of much more than just gluing a few small pieces of wood and fabric together — it typically includes carpentry, painting, electrical wiring and other touches common to

the construction of an actual house. The museum is currently featuring a house by miniaturist Jimmy Landers, with stained glass windows, lighting fixtures, marble and parquet flooring and a library with more than 2,000 tiny books that actually open. “The goal with miniatures is complete verisimilitude, to where if you saw a picture of it and you didn’t know it was a miniature you would swear it was real,” Mancini says. The museum board held a reception in September to commemorate its 25th anniversary, and recently received a certificate of congressional recognition from Senator Joe Donnelly. A constant stream of special events, demonstrations and workshops has helped keep interest in the museum growing, despite what Mancini describes as an overall decline in interest in the craft since the 1970s. “There were shops everywhere back in the 70s, and it was huge back then,” Mancini says, adding that the museum board brought on a new staff member, Caitlin Rogers, as its full-time collections manager last year. “It’s fallen out of favor since then, but we’ve been able to stay alive with offering different kinds of events and getting some great exhibits together. And we have our shop which sells miniature items and supplies.” Mancini says the establishment is by no means a kids museum, but about 20 percent of her visitors are children and she occasionally hosts scavenger hunts. “It’s great to see people of all ages come through,” Mancini says. “I remember we had a five-year-old girl staring at one of the room boxes for two-and-a-half hours. You see people looking at these collections and entering a whole other world and it’s a fascinating world.” The Museum of Miniature Houses and Other Collections is located at 111 East Main Street in Carmel. Call 317-575-9466 or visit museumofminiatures.org for more information including hours and admission details, a donation page, special event updates and more. atCarmel.com / MARCH 2019 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 13

President David Phillips

Writer / Jon Shoulders . Photographer / Michael Durr

Sugar Creek Vineyard & Winery Pours Carmel a Taste of Artisan Wines To hear David Phillips tell it, Sugar Creek Vineyard & Winery is the result of an inspired, collaborative family idea and a whole lot of subsequent hard work. Back in 2010, Phillips began chatting with his sonin-law Zach Cain, and Zach’s father Terry, about the possibility of growing a vineyard, with an eye toward producing and selling their own artisan wine right here in Central Indiana. As owners of a corn and soybean operation in Montgomery County, the Cains are no strangers to agriculture and were excited at the prospect of branching into the grape-growing game.

“Wine wasn’t something I was very consumed with before we started the vineyard, but life tends to give you some opportunities that you can take advantage of, and my oldest daughter married into a farming family,” says Phillips, who previously worked in the health care field and is now Sugar Creek’s president. “We all got to talking and figured it might be something we could do together.” Phillips and Cain, who serves as chief agriculture officer, took the lead on the idea and began hashing out the details, initially meeting with viticulture specialists from Purdue University as well as hiring consultants to help them navigate their new world of winemaking. “We ended up doing our first planting in 2012 up in Montgomery County, with varietals that the Purdue folks said had had reasonable success here in Indiana and the Midwest,” Phillips says. “That kind of started the process for us. There were about 60 or 65 wineries in the state at that time, and we also talked to them and found that the winery owners here are very collegial with everyone willing to help each other along.”

14 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atCarmel.com

It was 2015 that brought the first Sugar Creek harvest, after which Phillips and Cain began the wine-making process in earnest, building up inventory for the eventual commercialization of their products. Along the way, they considered several areas in and around Indy to build out a space for the public to sample and purchase wines, and Phillips says Main Street in Carmel was a natural fit.

“We considered doing a tasting room out where the vineyard is in Montgomery County, but it’s a little off the beaten path,” he says. “But you really have to be within a certain mile range of an interstate for something like this to attract people. Plus, I live in Carmel, so it made sense to have a year-round tasting room here. The demographics in Carmel are suited to what we’re doing.”

Phillips describes the tasting room, which opened in September of 2018, as a rustic, lodge-like atmosphere, with regular live music and ladies nights on Tuesdays. Customers are welcome to bring in outside food to enjoy with their wine selections, and Sugar Creek offers artisan cheese platters that serve two to three people. As an avid whitewater rafter and canoeist, Phillips decided to name each Sugar Creek wine after a U.S. river, stream or waterway destination, from a chardonnay named after the 692mile Yellowstone River, to the Redwall Cavern, which is a dry red named after a spot located on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. “I’ve tried to match the characteristics of the wine to a name of a place that I’ve been, to give some indication as to what the wine might be like,” Phillips says. “For example, pinot noir is a fairly smooth, easy wine and I named it Velvet Falls, which is a rapid on the middle fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. People have been looking up footage of these places on their phones on YouTube right in the tasting room to see what the wines are named after.” Phillips hopes the personal touch he and his staff of 12 bring to the tasting room facility will result in a lasting presence in Carmel. “I make a point to meet and introduce myself to everyone who comes in and find out a little bit about them and tell them what we’re trying to do and how we got started,” he says. “It’s nice making new friendships and getting to know the young people here.” Sugar Creek Vineyard & Winery is located at 1111 West Main Street, Suite 165 in Carmel. orkopolis, 9892 N. Michigan Road, is a full-service barbecue restaurant that has recently opened its doors to a large group of barbecue enthusiasts. Co-Owner Kim Hart says the Porkopolis chain started when several different elements came together at the same time. “You could say the stars all aligned, or maybe ‘pigs really do fly,’” Hart says. “Here's the groundwork in case people didn’t know. (Porkopolis Franchise Co-Owner) Matt Hamilton, and his friend Brady Bogen, owner of Brady’s Sauce, were born in Ohio. In the early 1800s, Peter Bogen, (Brady’s grandfather, of the now famous Brady Bogen lineage), moved his family to Ohio. In the spring of 1830, he opened a meat packing company in Cincinnati.” The business quickly became successful. “They became well-known for their hams and other preserved meats,” Hart says. “The level of production exceeded that of

many other packers of their time. When the area was the country's chief hog packing center and also about that time Cincinnati had become the country’s leading center for pork processing, it was Peter Bogen who is recognized for coining the nickname for Cincinnati as ‘Porkopolis.’” Many years later, Brady Bogen started “Brady’s Sauce,” which is “a combination of Midwestern roots and more than 20 years of living in the Southwest.” Brady’s Sauce is a combination of “the sweetest and most sultry taste around.” It is exclusively served at Porkopolis restaurants, including the newest location right between Zionsville and Carmel. Hart says that a barbecue’s sauce and spice are the cornerstones for the beginnings of a great barbecue experience. “The sauce and spice were developed first, and Matt Hamilton, also known as ‘Hammy’, used the sauce and spice rub as the basis for everything on the Porkopolis menu,” Hart 18 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atCarmel.com

says. “Hamilton operated many different bars and restaurants throughout the U.S. before landing in Phoenix, Arizona 16 years ago.” Hart adds that Porkopolis was started with the idea that barbecue means lots of different things to different people. “For most people, having a barbecue meant that you would fire up the Weber Grill in the yard and cook burgers, dogs or steaks and chicken,” Hart says. “That is unless you grew up in the Southeast, or Texas or Kansas City. What better way to signify the evolution of a modern-day barbecue restaurant than to recognize the evolution of the pork industry itself? So, ‘Porkopolis’ was born.” Porkopolis also has restaurants in Chandler, Arizona and Scottsdale, Arizona. Hart stressed that “whether you enjoy great smoked meats, fresh grilled seafood with Porkopolis’s signature sauce, or a handtossed salad, we think Porkopolis will evolve into something delicious.”

Hart has been pleased with the positive reception the new restaurant has received from both Hamilton, Boone and Marion counties. “They have been very welcoming,” she says. Hart, who co-owns the Porkopolis franchise with her husband, Gavin, and Matt Hamilton, has a long history in the restaurant business. “We used to be Dunkin Donuts franchisees, but sold out a few years ago,” Hart says. “We are also BurgerFi franchisees, with our first location in Fort Wayne. We also have the Hoosier Market/Marathon on Michigan Road as well.” Hart noted that the most popular items on the Porkopolis menu are the Pulled Pork, Two Meat Platters, Porkopolis Quesadilla, Smoked Chicken Wings, Burnt Ends and Fried Pickles.

The Carmel Art Education Studio has partnered with the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis to present art history lectures to Holocaust survivors as well. And some of the studio’s workshops have featured guest instructors from other parts of the country. Smulevitch tells of students who have arrived at her studio in their 80s, looking to fulfill a lifelong dream to pursue art. Education is important to Irina Smulevitch. She insisted on including the word in the name of her art studio, after all. But Smulevitch believes it’s just as critical that the Carmel Art Education Studio offer something else. “I think it’s important for people to communicate and to be together, and that’s what I’m trying to do,” she says. “The more connection I can see in my students and can create an atmosphere where everybody is welcome, that’s my goal. Not just to teach art.”

An acclaimed artist in her own right, Smulevitch is owner and instructor at the Carmel Art Education Studio. After a decade teaching at the Indianapolis Art Center, she opened the Carmel studio in the Village of WestClay in February 2018. The Carmel Art Education Studio offers fine art classes including portrait drawing, anatomy, perspective, composition and photography. Students can choose from media such as charcoal, pencil, pastel and watercolor. The studio also hosts special events. Presented once a month, Creative Night provides an opportunity for participants to enjoy food and wine, watch a documentary about an artist and then create art in the 20 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atCarmel.com

Some students progress from learning how to hold their pencils and brushes to being featured in art shows. “I’m filling lives with art for my students,” Smulevitch says. “When students tell you, ‘You changed my life,’ what can be more rewarding than that?” In addition to teaching art in Central Indiana, Smulevitch has been an art instructor at Frederick Community College in Maryland. She holds a master’s degree in fine arts from the Moscow State Textile Academy in her native Russia. Art shows in the United States and abroad have featured her work in watercolor and fashion design, and she was selected to create a youth clothing collection in Italy.

Still, she considers the Carmel Art Education Studio her greatest accomplishment.

Discussion with Smulevitch about her studio and personal accomplishments always comes back to the atmosphere the self-proclaimed “people person” is working to foster.

“Let me tell you, this is my American dream,” she says. “Some people have the dream to have a house. My American dream was to open this art school.”

“A lot of students have told me, ‘I feel so comfortable. I feel so loved,’” Smulevitch says. “We have differences in political views,

Enjoying the Ride John Gliva Talks The Ride With JMV, Family, Music & More Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer

It has been quite the ride for John Gliva. You may know Gliva by another name, the one his daily listeners know him as — JMV. Believe it or not, The Ride With JMV 107.5/1070 The Fan sports radio host actually started out doing the weather.

It was during his five years at WNDE that Gliva got the moniker — JMV. As Gliva tells it, he always went by John Michael Gliva. It was colleague and friend, Conrad He initially wanted to be on the music side of radio. After finishing his college career at Brunner — formerly a sports writer with Indiana State, Gliva worked several years on 107.5/1070 The Fan, now owner of a the night show at B97, a contemporary hits sports collectibles store in Noblesville — who first called Gliva, John Michael station in Bloomington. Vincent. The name started out as a joke As he got older, he got a bit burnt out on the in reference to then-famous actor JanMichael Vincent. night show gig. Gliva’s rainy days calling the weather wouldn’t last for long.

Though Gliva eventually graduated from Indiana State in 1993, he started out at “It was great for a while,” Gliva says. “But Vincennes University in their journalism then you hit 28 years old and you think, ‘Oh program. He had a passion for sports, but he man, I need to do something else.’” got his feet wet with the weather first. “Vincennes University has a good broadcasting program,” Gliva says. “They threw me right in. My first year there, they thought I was pretty good at geography so they made me do the weather. So, I was on their PBS affiliate doing the weather with magnetic clouds and rain.”

After leaving B97 and moving away from Bloomington, Gliva was out of radio for a year working odd jobs in sales including, of all things, mortgage loans. He got his first break doing weekend shows for WNDE in 1999 before starting full time in 2000. Not long after, Gliva got the afternoon show to himself in 2004. 24 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atCarmel.com

Fellow radio host, Mark Patrick, shortened the nickname and tagged Gliva as JMV. “It is one of those things where you have a choice,” Gliva says. “You either say, ‘Man, I really don’t like you calling me that.’ And you have people call you by your real name and kind of be a chump about it, or you just roll with it. I rolled with it because it was Mark Patrick. Having Mark mentioning you really helped. He is so good and so established.”

Gliva’s career shifted when he made the jump to 107.5/1070 The Fan in May of 2010, and “The Ride With JMV” was born. Today, Gliva hosts The Ride weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m. mixing sports with pop culture and music references and enjoying a career that he says is a dream job. Those who have listened to his show over the years have likely heard the “JMV SUX” mantra. A phrase that started out as a jab to Gliva is just a punch that he has rolled with. Now, there are JMV SUX t-shirts, and, each year, Gliva hosts the “JMV SUX But His Larceny Bourbon Golf Outing Doesn’t.” This year’s golf outing, October 1 at Foxcliff Golf Course, will benefit Teacher’s Treasures and includes prizes, dinner served by Sullivan’s Steakhouse and a silent auction. “It is fun. I really don’t take a lot of this seriously,” Gliva says. “I don’t want to be so thin-skinned and get bent out of shape every time somebody says something about me. This was used as kind of a diffuser. I think the shirts are funny. The guys at The Shop in Broad Ripple do a great job at coming up with ideas for those. It is more fun than anything. People have fun with it and so do I. My kids thought it was a little weird at first, especially when we would be at the mall and someone would yell, ‘JMV Sucks!’ But they get it now. My son even has his own shirt, too. People seem to like it, and I’m glad.”

Today, Gliva lives in Bargersville with his wife Christy and children Lainey and Blake. Christy is the assistant principal at Jeremiah Gray-Edison Elementary. Gliva says he’s fortunate to have a career with his work hours because it allows him to take his children to school each day — a role he enjoys as a father.

Gliva grew up in the small, rural town of Owensburg, south of Bloomington. He has lived in Bargersville since 2004 and enjoys life on the southside.

That simple role has even turned into a small morning show with his 8-year old daughter Lainey. After being nudged to do a bit more digitally and in the realm of social media, Gliva decided to start posting Facebook Live videos while in the car with Lainey before dropping her off to school.

As he looks back on his career, Gliva is grateful for where he is today. He is fortunate to be in a career that doesn’t feel like work each day.

“Last year, we had a buffer of about an hour before she had to be in school after I dropped Blake off,” Gliva says. “So, we sat in the parking lot always listening to music together but were kind of bored. One day I just decided to do some Facebook Live and see what happened. That turned into Drop Off Line Sports. Basically, it is me and my daughter sitting in the cab of my truck. She has fun playing games and talking. We even got a sponsor for it. “This is really the absolute best job and the best timing ever,” Gliva adds. “As my kids grow, I get the opportunity to be there with them and see them. The only time I’m not with them is when I’m on the air here, and sometimes they even come here. It is pretty awesome. It would be tough if I couldn’t be around them as much.” atCarmel.com / MARCH 2019 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 25

“We’ve got some acreage, which I like,” Gliva says. “Country wise, it is how I grew up. I love the area.”

“I always wanted to have a job that didn’t feel like a job and is always fun,” he says. “It didn’t happen instantaneously. I’ve been fortunate to be in the right place at the right time and be surrounded by great people. This has been perfect. I’m having fun and doing exactly what I wanted to do.” For more information and to listen to the latest shows, visit 1070thefan.com/ theridewithjmv.

Founder Marie Maher with her son, Yves and her daughter, Luella.

Local Mom’s Website Connects Parents of Children With Special Needs to Qualified Babysitters Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Two years ago, Marie Maher received an official diagnosis from doctors that her son, Yves, had autism. The diagnosis explained what she thought to be behavioral issues with her son, but it also left Maher with more questions and much to learn. Prior to the diagnosis, Maher was struggling to find babysitters that could watch Yves, along with her daughter Luella, while she and her husband went out for a date

a date night or anything like that. Then we got his diagnosis and everything changed.”

“We were having behavior issues with him simply because we didn’t know what was going on,” Maher says. “We would always get calls from our sitters asking us to come home. They just didn’t know how to handle it. We avoided going out at all because we thought we had a kid with behavior issues and no one wanted to watch him. I couldn’t relax when I went out for anything. My husband and I would go months without

For Maher, it was an eyeopening moment. At the time, Maher was running a networking website in which she helped connect babysitters looking for work and parents looking for a sitter to watch their children. With more than 500 sitters listed on her site, she began interviewing new sitters that might be able to watch her son. She quickly realized how the conversation with these sitters

shifted once she mentioned that Yves had autism. “The moment I would say that my son has autism I would see this person change and get very uncomfortable,” Maher says. “I would text or call them later and never hear back.
