On January 6 the Carmel Clay Public Library (CCPL) Joyce Winner West Branch opened in the Village of WestClay. The 5,000 square feet of space is configured to offer a variety of services for patrons of all ages. The facility is the result of much planning, research and input from focus groups, and has quickly become a favorite destination for many. “We kept hearing from the western part of Clay Township that it was difficult to get to the Carmel Clay Public Library,” says Christy Walker, CCPL communications manager. “We decided to concentrate on the west part of our service area and build a branch there. The new branch is named for the late Village of WestClay resident Joyce Winner. She was a member of the Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation. She fell in love with the library and became a huge promoter of literacy and reading. Upon her passing, her husband Jim Winner gave the Library Foundation a significant gift.” West Branch Manager Katherine Huddle adds that Winner would likely have been delighted to see the amenities at the new facility. “This would have been her branch,” Huddle says. “Opening day was like Black Friday at Target. Within hours 1,300 books flew off the shelves.” The branch has many unique features and a lot of character. The windows of the conservatory room allow light to flood in. During the cold months, patrons can sit by a fireplace and sip coffee while reading. While the conservatory is designated as a quiet space, there are two mezzanine spaces with open seating that are often used by pupils and tutors during after-school hours. “There is a children’s area and teens have their own dedicated space,” Huddle says. “Right now the meeting room is open on a first-come, first-served basis. In the back of the building there is a 24-hour, drive-up book return. All materials that come from the main library can be returned to the 6 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MARCH 2020 / atCarmel.com

branch. Materials can be ordered from the main library on the website and then be picked up at the branch.” A conveyer belt moves books around at the branch and can be viewed behind a glass panel. The library’s wallpaper, flooring and upholstery all contain hidden words and letters. “The CCPL partnered with The Great American Read program sponsored by the Public Broadcasting Service,” Walker says. “Carmel readers voted ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ by John Steinbeck as their all-time favorite book. The chandelier in the west branch honors the book by consisting of pages from it. They can be changed out in the future.” Huddle says the local response to the branch has been encouraging so far. “There is a lot of multigenerational use and we are seeing people come in on a weekly basis,” she says. “I was thrilled to hear a little girl say to her grandmother, ‘Can we stay as long as we want?’ If anyone is skeptical or has a concern with the future of libraries, I can say the library is alive and well. It continues to house collections of books people want, and it’s a community hub that offers connections that people crave.” The Carmel Clay Public Library Joyce Winner West Branch is located at 12770 Horseferry Road in the Village of WestClay. AMERICA’S FLOOR SOURCE 7676 Zionsville Road Indianapolis, IN 317-356-3181 AmericasFloorSource.com
Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Ellie Sophia Photography
America’s Floor Source has a twenty-year history of providing the highest level of quality service and customer satisfaction, including serving the Indianapolis area since 2010. Located in Park 100 at 7676 Zionsville Road, it maintains a vast inventory of carpet, hardwood, luxury vinyl, laminate, and tile for anyone looking for floor covering. With its highly trained employees and unmatched commitment to homeowners, builders, property managers, remodelers and designers, the company has grown during economic downturns and continues to thrive. “We offer flooring for every style, budget and customer at a fair price, every time,” says Cary Jerris, Regional President. “We don’t believe in offering ridiculously low prices then surprising our customers with hidden fees. We are always upfront with our pricing and believe in the adage, ‘you get what you pay for.’” The company has different ways to explore and shop its many products. Carpet, hardwood, laminate, ceramic and porcelain tile, stone, wall tile and backsplashes, rolled vinyl, luxury vinyl tile, cork, bamboo and rubber sports flooring can be viewed in
the brick and mortar store. Experienced employees can guide customers and answer any questions. In addition, there are two other avenues customers can use. At no additional cost, one of the company’s Mobile Floor Source vehicles will bring samples from the showroom to your living room. Different products can be viewed next to the existing furniture, paint and lighting. This results in a confident decision that can be made in the comfort of the client’s home and at a time of their choosing. Shopping online via the company’s website is another option. Products can be filtered by categories, brands, colors and price. The Inspiration Gallery page is a springboard for customers to gather ideas. The Tips and Trends tab further educates shoppers on topics, for example on the best flooring for dogs. Customers can set up an account as well as get information on current promotions such as two years interest-free financing. Major credit cards are accepted. “We have a wholesale division that sells material only, as well as offering full-service installation,” Jerris says. “Also, flooring installers, remodelers, fire and water
restoration, general contractors, designers, realtors and investors can become Pro Services Partners. Pro Services is the core of our business. Our most popular products today are luxury vinyl plank, waterproof flooring, large format tile, and patterns.” America’s Floor Source’s relentless pursuit of quality, integrity and commitment to hiring and educating knowledgeable employees is sure to keep the company on a path to success for many years to come. They take every measure to ensure customers get perfect products when they need them and that they are installed correctly. Throughout the entire process of selecting a product to completed installation, there is constant communication with the customer. “We have been in Indianapolis for 10 years and business is great,” Jerris adds. “Indianapolis Park 100 is easy to access, and our 100,000-square-foot facility has room for expansion.” America’s Floor Source is located at 7676 Zionsville Road in Indianapolis. The Cinderella stories. The upsets. The bracketology. Whether you’re an avid college basketball fan or just enjoy picking your bracket based on the mascots, March Madness is an exciting time. This year, share that excitement by hosting your own watch party for your family and friends with this winning starting line-up. Here are 5 helpful tips for making your March Madness party a slam dunk.
1. CHOW DOWN ON GAME DAY CLASSICS Food for your March Madness party should be simple and easy to eat with your fingers. Chicken wings, jalapeño poppers, pizza and nachos are classic game day go-tos. Take your finger food game to the next round by choosing foods that correspond with some teams in the tournament. For example, serve mini hot brown sandwiches in honor of Kentucky or pulled pork sandwiches for Kansas. For dessert, decorate cupcakes in your favorite team’s colors or use orange and black icing to create mini basketballs. It’s not a party without libations, and March Madness allows for lots
of creativity for drinks. If a local team is in the dance, keep a cooler full of beer from area breweries. You could also choose local favorites from other teams in the tourney. Keep cocktails simple so that you don’t have to spend your whole party tending the bar. Try premixed drinks like margaritas, sangria and mojitos that you can mix up before the party and let people serve themselves. For the 21-and-under crowd, have bottles of Gatorade (bonus points for orange flavor to tie into the basketball theme!) and bottled water on hand.
2. DON’T SKIMP ON THE TV The bulk of the party will be watching the games, so you’ll want to have a nice-sized TV. If you can swing it, set up several TVs to watch multiple games at once, especially during the first rounds. Put your TV(s) in a spot where everyone can comfortably view it, providing spots for people to sit and watch if they want to. Think creatively for extra seating, repurpose poufs and stools as seating. Before the party, check your cable connection to be sure no one has to experience an expected blackout.
12 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MARCH 2020 / atCarmel.com
If your household is lacking the ideal television, many rentto-own businesses and furniture rental companies offer short-term rentals. If you’re in the market for a new TV anyway, keep an eye out for sales right before the Super Bowl and the weeks leading up to the start of March Madness.
3. U P YOUR BRACKETOLOGY GAME One of the best parts of March Madness is picking your teams and watching them advance along your bracket. Some people spend hours pouring over game notes and expert tips to pick their bracket, while others choose teams based on school colors, mascots or friends who attended that school. No matter how you choose, elevate your bracket game at your party with fun games and contests. For each game that you watch, award prizes to the guests who choose the winning team on their bracket. You can also pass out prizes for guests who correctly guess the total final score, how many players foul out of the game or the winning team’s field goal percentage. Be sure to have extra brackets on hand for guests who haven’t had a chance to fill one out yet.
4. ENTERTAIN GUESTS WITH OTHER GAMES TO PLAY While the basketball games are the main attraction, have other games for guests to play during halftime or in between rounds. Break out the PlayStation or Xbox for a round of NBA Live or NBA2K. Head outside for a real game of hoops, horse or knockout. Let your guests show off their skills. You could also put up small basketball hoops around the house for trick shots and alley-oops.
5. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE AMBIANCE Tie it all together with a fun ambiance. Have all your guests wear their favorite basketball jersey or other collegiate team wear. If your guests are willing to go all out, ask everyone to wear their best face paint and offer a prize for the coolest design. Join the fun too, donning a referee shirt and whistle to call any party fouls and award points for participation. Make the party atmosphere extra fun by playing Jock Jams songs in the background. Most party stores sell basketballthemed decorations. You also can’t go wrong with simple black and orange streamers and balloons. No matter how you party, just remember to be safe and have fun!

WE’LL HELP SPRING COME IN LIKE A LAMB WE CAN HELP TREAT SPRING ALLERGIES, RESPIRATORY, AND SKIN ISSUES
NEW STONE AGE: BLENDING THE SCIENCE AND ART OF CUSTOM COUNTERTOPS Just a stone’s throw from Carmel’s Arts and Design District, long regarded as one of the state’s greatest artistic hubs, sits an unconventional artist’s workshop of sorts. It’s a 20,000-square-foot art gallery of granite, marble, quartz and similar stone. While the creations brought to life here don’t adorn collectors’ walls, they do instill that signature “Wow!” factor so many works of art aspire to achieve. That’s the response Indy Custom Stone owner John Lunsford strives for from every customer. Indy Custom Stone treats every individual countertop, bathroom vanity or other custom furniture project as both a science and an art. Operating out of their Carmel headquarters since 2014, Lunsford and his team of fabrication and installation specialists bring decades of combined experience to each unique application. The company partners with custom homebuilders as well as commercial clientele, but dealing directly with community homeowners — benefiting from word-ofmouth marketing and customer referrals — has become its largest area of growth. Transforming any kitchen or bathroom can be as simple as “out with the old and in with the new,” but Indy Custom Stone’s approach to delivering clients custom countertops is different than most. It begins with the vast selection of premium-grade materials in the massive aforementioned showroom and fabrication facility and continues into the customer’s home.
You won’t see any tape measures, carboard templates or hand-drawn sketches when Indy Custom Stone technicians visit for their in-home estimate and measuring of the job. Instead, high-tech laser templating technology produces a digital layout with measurements accurate up to one sixty-fourth of an inch. The high-tech approach continues as 3D models of a customer’s countertops are projected into a digital drawing of their home, requiring much less of the client’s imagination in order to visualize how their stone will look as a finished product. The water saw and finishing router use thousands of gallons of water every day, cutting and polishing stone slabs while also ensuring excess dust doesn’t make its way into the air breathed by employees. Indy Custom Stone’s unique manufacturing water recycling system cleans the used water and produces an environmentally friendly, mud-like residue that goes on to be recycled for use by local landfills. From handpicking their exact stone slab to the state-ofthe-art ways they bring each vision to life, Indy Custom Stone provides a unique, personal experience and simply stunning results Central Indiana homeowners can be proud to display.

PLANNING TIPS FOR YOUR SPRING BREAK TRIPS Writer / Lindsey Thompson Photography Provided
The weeks after Winter Break can drag on and on, especially during an exceptionally cold and dreary winter. A little Spring Break planning can be just the thing to get you out of the winter doldrums and looking forward to some time away. Whether you stay close or travel far, here are some tips for planning your Spring Break trip. 1. BOOK EARLY Lots of people travel during Spring Break so booking early assures you can get better flights, hotel rooms and attraction tickets. Schools typically release their yearly calendars at the beginning of the school year, giving you plenty of heads up to book Spring Break early. When you book early, you have a better
chance of getting a better deal and making sure you book just the right flight or hotel for your family. The longer you wait to book flights, for example, the less likely you are to get seats together or even be on the same flight. 2. SET A BUDGET Lay out a travel budget for your Spring Break trip and stick to it. Making family memories on a vacation may be priceless, but taking a trip you can’t afford isn’t worth going into debt. Just like it’s beneficial to book early, it also helps to save early for your Spring Break trip. Spring Break doesn’t fall too far after Christmas, another expensive time for your family budget, so planning ahead allows you to spend money on both. Use a budget management tool like Mint to help you plan and save. 16 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MARCH 2020 / atCarmel.com
3. DIAL INTO DEAL Travel deals abound, you just have to do a little digging to find them. Not just for massages and Thai food deals, Groupon and LivingSocial both have travel sections full of deals. Groupon has a special Spring Break page that offers lots of great ideas and travel deals including Smoky Mountain cabins, indoor water parks and beach getaways. Online travel agencies like Expedia, Travelocity and Kayak allow you to search for travel deals all around the world. Many even have special Spring Break pages, providing trip suggestions for flights, hotels and activities. If you’ll be traveling by air, some travel experts suggest the best time to purchase airline tickets is on a Tuesday, as prices tend to drop that day each week. Sign up for airline and hotel emails to unlock other deals.
4. UTILIZE APPS Tons of apps exist to help take the stress out of Spring Break travel planning. Hopper is an excellent tool for finding the best flights, as the app lets you set up alerts for different itineraries and even allows you to book right from your phone. TripIt helps you keep all your reservations and itineraries organized, putting everything (flights, hotel reservations, car rentals, etc.) right at your fingertips.
an opportunity to see your town through different eyes. Visit that local museum you’ve never been to, try a new restaurant or cheer on the hometown sports team. Book a local hotel or bed and breakfast, or even find an Airbnb in a different part of town. Just like out-of-town visitors, locals can take advantage of special deals and discounts
through organizations like the visitor’s bureau. They often have coupons on their websites and at their offices for attractions, restaurants and hotels. Regardless of where you go or how you get there, with a little planning you can have the Spring Break trip your family will remember for years. Happy planning!

If you’ll be traveling by car, Roadtrippers takes the hassle out of mapping your route, giving you suggestions for stops along the way and up-to-date road conditions. 5. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Florida, Mexico, Disney. These might be great Spring Break destinations, but they’re also some of the most popular and most crowded and most expensive. Avoid the crowds and consider an alternative Spring Break destination. Washington D.C. is affordable and offers something for the whole family, from museums to monuments. Sedona, Arizona offers an escape from the cold and amazing outdoor activities like hiking and mountain biking. If your passport is up-to-date, consider running for the Northern border and visiting one of Canada’s great cities. Montreal is an eclectic mix of French colonial architecture, Bohemian attitude and modern-day sites. Calgary’s natural beauty and smalltown feel makes it a great choice for the outdoorsy type and Niagara Falls has fun for the whole family.

FAMILY-OWNED MATTINGLY CONCRETE HAS A 33-YEAR HISTORY OF PUTTING CUSTOMERS FIRST Mattingly Concrete is built to last, and the familyowned company is making good on that promise with its recent expansion into the southside of Indianapolis. With a shop located in Carmel, Mattingly Concrete has extended its service radius to include all sides of Central Indiana, reaching about 45 miles in any direction from its headquarters. In addition to this northside hub, the company has also recently set up another satellite work station on the southside, expanding its services even further into areas like Center Grove, Greenwood and Martinsville.
“We’ve built a great business here on the northside of Indianapolis, and we are excited to carry that over to the southside now,” says Owner Will Mattingly. “We are expanding our service area and anticipate adding 50 jobs to the southside over the next five years.” Mattingly Concrete’s growth has continued rapidly and steadily in recent years. Along the way, the company has garnered plenty of accolades including the 2017 and 2018 Angie’s List Super Service Award, the Indy A-List and more. In 2017 and 2019, Mattingly Concrete was named one of the Indianapolis Business Journal’s Fastest-Growing Companies. “We are a healthy company with a lot of momentum and energy,” Mattingly says. “That is thanks in large part to our stellar employees and our customers. Our customers and their satisfaction are what matters most.”

Mattingly Concrete was founded in 1987. Today, the company handles projects across Central Indiana, but the family-owned business originally comes from a humble beginning. “Our roots actually started in the Meridian-Kessler/Broad Ripple area,” Mattingly says. “That is where my father, Dan, got his start, simply knocking on doors with a wheelbarrow in his pickup truck.” Early on, Dan set the standard for Mattingly Concrete projects and the way in which they are completed. “He was very personable and good with people,” Mattingly says. “And we continue that focus today. As a homeowner, once you’ve worked with a couple of contractors, some of your worst nightmares can come true. And if you’re lucky, you come across a contractor who knows those pain points and knows how to ease your anxiety, and that is who we are.” Mattingly Concrete has always put the customer first, no matter how large or small the project happens to be the company makes sure to get the job done on time and has open communication with homeowners that makes the entire process work seamlessly. That promise to its customers is proven through the quality of work and countless customer reviews and testimonials.
“You get to go to work, come home, and we have done what was supposed to be done,” Mattingly says. “You know we took our notes. We just pride ourselves in the level of service that we provide and making sure that our customers are completely satisfied with the job we’ve done.” Mattingly Concrete primarily works with homeowners. In fact, Mattingly estimates that about 75% of their projects consist of driveways and patios. “We’re talking tearing out and totally replacing a driveway or tearing out and totally recreating a backyard patio,” he says. The company also provides services including steps, sidewalks, porches and decorative concrete such as stamped, colored and exposed aggregate. While they primarily work with homeowners, Mattingly Concrete provides commercial site work as well, completing projects involving curbing, parking lots, common areas and ADA ramps. When it comes to their process, the company always makes sure they have someone on hand at their offices to answer questions.

“We look for honesty and integrity over anything,” Mattingly says. “We have a 33-year history and reputation that rides on the line every day, and when we hire people, we express that. The team we have today is fantastic.
“A lot of people find a window contractor or concrete guy, they call, and there’s no answer,” Mattingly says. “So, we try to wow people by answering our phones. It sounds rudimentary, but it really takes just that.” After accepting a quote from Mattingly Concrete, customers are assigned a project coordinator who makes sure everything is completed correctly and on schedule. “We have a dedicated team that takes care of our customers,” Mattingly says. “Their sole job is to walk alongside the homeowners and see the project through.”
WE HAVE A DEDICATED TEAM THAT TAKES CARE OF THE CUSTOMER. W I L L M AT T I N G LY
When it comes to the people they employ, Mattingly Concrete looks for only the best. The hiring process is a rigorous one, and the company only hires highly-trained workers that display professionalism on every job-site.
“We still pride ourselves in having all our own employees — we don’t sub-contract anything,” Mattingly adds. “We’ve separated ourselves from other concrete contractors in that regard. We have all of our own employees and all of our own equipment.” When they’re not on the clock, Mattingly Concrete employees are out making a difference in the community, whether that is helping someone in need or volunteering their time to a local charity. That level of community service is crucial to Mattingly. “We’ve had people call us and say, ‘Hey. Your guy just helped me air up my tire at the gas station,’” Mattingly says, adding that the company also works with local organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. “Those are the kinds of people that we want working for us. They have our name on their t-shirt, and they wear it proudly.” All in all, Mattingly Concrete looks to continue providing a service at a level that is unmatched, both on the northside and southside of Indianapolis. “We are excited to bring that level of service to the southside,” Mattingly says. “We really stress to people that we’re here for them. You can call us anytime.” Mattingly Concrete’s shop is located at 10620 Bellefontaine Street in Indianapolis. You can also call them at 317-867-4049 or visit them online at MattinglyConcrete.com for more information.

or nearly five decades Jim Litten has worked in the real estate industry, having started as a sales associate for F.C. Tucker Company and eventually securing his current position as the company’s CEO. Through those decades, Jim’s passion for the industry has never abated. “Being in a people business like real estate, if you really do enjoy being with others and establishing relationships, I think you’re always going to stay interested and thrive,” Jim says. Originally from eastern Ohio near the West Virginia border, Jim attended Ohio University in Athens on a football scholarship and studied physical education. After graduating, he became a lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1968 and served in Vietnam throughout most of 1969. Upon finishing active military duty, Jim took a sales job in Louisville with HuntWesson Foods, eventually transferring to Indianapolis, where he’s been ever since. “Hunt-Wesson was going to move me again in 1972 but I decided I liked Indianapolis, so I decided to stay and get in the real estate business,” Jim says. “That’s when I joined F.C. Tucker, and I’m sure glad I did. It’s been a great company to be a part of.” Litten says even back in the early 1970s when he decided to settle in Indy before the northside was as bustling and commercially developed as it is now - he saw potential in the area. “I wanted to have roots and a place where my kids could grow up, and even though it wasn’t the Indianapolis it is today, the quality of life was good here,” he says. “And I knew I’d like to be independent and in control of my own destiny, so I thought real estate sounded intriguing.”
“I didn’t know anyone here back then, but I just worked hard and did everything I was taught in training, and good fortune happened to me,” Jim says.

Jim was offered a management position with Tucker a few years after joining as a salesman, and in 1979 went on to manage the company’s Keystone at the Crossing office location.
Jim, a Carmel resident, feels proud of the residential and commercial growth throughout Hamilton County over the past few decades.

“We have a lot of the big-city, major-market amenities here without the problems they have,” he says. “And the cost of housing here is another good thing - Indianapolis is in the top third of affordability of the major metropolitan markets in the United States, and our taxes are reasonable compared to most markets.” Jim enjoys playing golf in his downtime, and

dining at various north side restaurants like Anthony’s Chophouse. “There’s so much to do for families up here,” he says. “My wife and I try to frequent all the restaurants as much as we can. We have an office on Veterans Way by Sun King, so a lot of times at the end of the day we’ll pop by the office and then go have a drink and maybe a pizza.” According to Jim, F.C. Tucker Company, which currently includes nearly 50 offices in Indiana, did approximately $4 billion in real estate sales in 2019 - a far cry from the approximately $250 million per year back when he, Tucker and Goodrich bought the company in the ‘80s. He says it’s all due to the quality of the F.C. Tucker staff throughout the state. “There are so many people who we all know that dread getting up in the morning and going to work,” Jim says. “I can honestly say that 99.9% of the days, I can’t wait to get to work and be with all the people at Tucker. Everyone here is dedicated to their clients and treating people the right way. I’ve often said that people who have character don’t have to worry about their success, and I think that’s the culture at Tucker.”

2 ND ANNUAL DEPUTY PICKETT REMEMBRANCE DAY RETURNS MARCH 7 AT THE BOONE COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS Writer / Josh Brown Photography Provided by Remember this Photography & Snapshots by Sally Jane
March 2, 2018, is a day that will forever be remembered by Jennifer Pickett and all of Boone County. What started out as a routine arrest warrant being served by Lebanon Police officers, turned into a high-speed chase through the small town. The pursuit tragically ended with the death of Boone County Deputy Jacob Pickett, marking the first time in the department’s history that a deputy was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Today, Jennifer is encouraging people to Respond Like Jake. That’s the mantra, the hashtag for the Jacob Pickett Response Organization, and it is a fitting one to honor the memory of the late Boone County Deputy. That challenge is one that Jennifer chose when she officially created the organization earlier this year because, she says, it embodies who her husband was. “Jake always helped out wherever he could,” Jennifer says. “I’ve had friends describe him as someone who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. My mom could call him and he’d go and 26 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MARCH 2020 / atCarmel.com
change her tire. One time, my dad fell off a ladder and had to go to the ER. I was unavailable, but Jake was there with him for hours and helped him get home. He was always picking dogs up off the side of the road and bringing them home, too, regardless of how many we already had. “He was selfless,” she adds. “He was a protector who loved deeply and cared about the people in his life and would support them in any way that he could. As husband and wife, we were a team. We made decisions and faced the world together. He was someone I could count on.”
REMEMBERING JAKE & SERVING OTHERS Today, Jennifer, and all of Boone County, remember and celebrate Deputy Pickett’s life through the Deputy Jacob Pickett Remembrance Day. This year, the 2nd Annual event will be held once again at the Boone County Fairgrounds on March 7. The inaugural event in 2019 served as a memorial and a time for the Pickett family and the Boone County community to heal and gain some closure after such a senseless tragedy. This year, the event will continue to honor Deputy Pickett but will also be providing support for another family in need, as well as plenty of family-friendly events for the community. Proceeds from this year’s event will support Amanda Farinella and the Farinella family. Amanda was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer last October. Her husband, Joe, is a deputy with the Tipton County Sheriff ’s Department, and the Farinella family has always held a special place in Jake and Jennifer’s hearts. “The first year of the event was all about sharing memories of Jake and who he was beyond the uniform,” Jennifer says. “Around the time last year that we were thinking about doing this event again and
what the purpose of it would be, I heard the news about my friend, Amanda. I was immediately sad about it. But I thought to myself, ‘If Jake were here, he would drop everything to be there for Joe and their family.’ And my sadness deepened because Jake isn’t here. That’s when I decided to not only do the event again but start an organization that brings to life Jake’s legacy. Our mission is to help law enforcement families by assisting with financial tolls brought on by traumatic events and to help facilitate that support, monetary or not.”
The 2nd annual event will also include plenty of new activities for all ages including a corn hole tournament, a kid’s area with bounce houses, face painting, a photo booth and a DJ, a Red Cross Blood Drive, a chance to meet the BCSO and Tipton County K9s and more. The event will also include a silent auction for attendees and the opportunity to bid on unique items. Merchandise will also be for sale for fundraising efforts.
A HEART FOR ADOPTION It takes a special heart to adopt, and adoption is a crucial piece of Jennifer and Jake’s story. Beyond frequently taking in and adopting dogs, the couple felt the call early on to also adopt children. The Picketts opened their home as foster parents on a few occasions. Today, Jennifer is the proud mother of their two adopted boys. The adoption process was being finalized around the time of Deputy Pickett’s passing.

“Jake and I never thought about how hard it might be,” Jennifer says. “We always just thought that we have love to give and there was a need. So we did it. It made us better people just by being able to give that love and extend our family. I can’t imagine it being any other way.” As such, Jennifer aims to carry on Jake’s memory so the boys know who their father truly was. On the Jacob Pickett Response Organization website remembering626.org, which launched in February, visitors can find a “Share A Story” button. It allows people to share their memories and stories of how they knew Jake. Jennifer hopes to build up a memory bank of sorts with the stories to pass on to the boys. “I came up with the idea because the boys were so young when we lost Jake,” she says. “They are going to miss those experiences of Jake with his buddies and reminiscing and sharing stories. I thought this was a way that people could share those stories, and I can collect them. The boys are going to be able to hear those stories about their dad that they would have missed out on. It’s also for me. After Jake passed, so many people reached out to me with their stories about Jake and some that I didn’t even know about. It was very helpful and heart-warming to hear those stories of how he touched people’s lives.”
JEN & BRIK Deputy Pickett, a Brownsburg High School alum, joined the Boone County Sheriff’s Office in 2015. He showed a passion early on for the K9 department and started working with his K9 partner, Brik, in 2016. Brik was alongside Jake that fatal day in 2018. Today, Brik is retired and living at home with Jennifer and the boys. These days, the beloved German shepherd and Belgian Malinois mix can sometimes be found going through the trash or trying to sneak a bite of food off the counter as he continues getting acquainted to home life. For Jennifer, though, Brik is a piece of Jake that lives on and a comfort to the Pickett family. “Brik is very important to our family,” she says. “He is, in a way, our piece of Jake that is still 28 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MARCH 2020 / atCarmel.com
here on earth. Jake loved animals. It was his goal to become a K9 handler, and Brik was very important to him. Now, he’s settled in to being a lazy house dog and enjoys lounging around and chewing on things. He’s adjusted well. He does bring a lot of comfort to me and to the boys. They know he was daddy’s partner.” As March 7 approaches, Jennifer encourages any and all residents and surrounding community members to come out for the 2nd annual event. “The community response and support has been incredible over the years and more than I could have ever imagined,” she says. “I’m really excited and honored to do this event. We just want to bring people together, have fun and give back to the community.” For more information, a full list of activities and event times or to donate, visit remembering626.org or visit them on Facebook at facebook.com/ JacobPickettResponseOrg.

City Council President Laura Campbell
LEADING THE WAY NEW CITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT LAURA CAMPBELL TALKS FAMILY, WOMEN IN OFFICE & GOALS FOR 2020 Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Ellie Sophia Photography
When Laura Campbell first moved to Carmel in 1977, she wasn’t a fan. After living in New Jersey and having easy access to the shore and the Big Apple, she found Carmel to be rather dull. She graduated from Carmel High School, and went on to study public relations and journalism at Ball State University, but she always had her sights set on moving back east. “I told my parents that once I graduated from Ball State, I was never again going to live in Indiana,” says Campbell, who now serves as Carmel’s city council president. “My dad loves to remind me of that story now.”
Campbell, an 18-year resident of Carmel, now has a love affair with the city. She thoroughly enjoys the parks, the safe roundabouts, the library, and all the other amenities the area offers. Campbell landed a college internship at a public relations firm in New York City. Following graduation, however, she found it was much more economical to live in the midwest. She then accepted a position in Indianapolis, working with Mayor William Hudnut. “It was an exciting time,” Campbell says. “He was open to ideas.” Later in her career, Campbell got into atCarmel.com / MARCH 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 31
marketing for a commercial real estate firm, then became the executive director for the Hamilton County republican party where she worked with elected officials at multiple levels. “Municipal government was what most interested me, and in 2015 the time was right to run for city council,” says Campbell, who took office in 2016. Campbell served on the planning commission and became council vice president. When she became the new city council president in January of this year, she joined forces with a new female vice president, Sue Finkam, marking the first time Carmel has had all-women council leadership.
“I hope that it encourages more women to run for office, or to serve within their church or whatever volunteer organization they may be involved in,” says Campbell, who is excited to hit the ground running with her new position, and is especially passionate about organizing the Carmel advisory committee on disability.
City Council Vice President Sue Finkam
Campbell’s focus will be on three areas - accessibility, employment and social connections. In terms of accessibility, many people with disabilities, along with their caregivers, have come forward to share which areas of the city are difficult for them to move around in. “We get input from the committee on areas where we can make improvements, or where sidewalks need to be added or fixed,” Campbell says.

Regarding employment, Campbell would like to work with employers to provide more opportunities for people with disabilities to be employed locally. “I’m passionate about disability rights and inclusion, as my daughter has epilepsy,” says Campbell, who has personally felt the sting of fading social connections. Campbell says her daughter was fortunate to be enrolled in the Carmel school system, but once she graduated her family felt somewhat lost, as many families do. “We felt like we were dropped off the edge of a cliff when all of my daughter’s social connections went on to college,” Campbell says. People with disabilities and their caregivers tend to feel isolated. Therefore, Campbell wants to do all she can to make them feel included in the community. Last year the Carmel Fire Department worked on an initiative called the Specific Response Registry, a voluntary registry that provides advanced notice to emergency response personnel for those with a physical or mental health issue
“We must have conscientious growth in our city and make sure the infrastructure can keep up with that growth.” that may make it difficult to leave home during an emergency. Campbell and her team are working with John Moriarty of the Carmel Fire Department and Steven Orusa, chief of the Fishers Fire Department. “It’s great to work with other cities on initiatives like this,” Campbell says. “We also talk with other councils for their input.” For instance, Campbell regularly talks to Cecelia Coble, city council president in Fishers. “Cecilia also has a daughter with disabilities,” Campbell says. “She and her employees have been great about giving advice on the disability committee.”

Campbell’s other goals for 2020 include making sure that new council members are integrated into the council, developing good working relationships among the council, and improving communication between the mayor and the council.
For more than a quarter century, attorneys, accountants and other trusted advisors have relied upon our Personal Trusts and Estates Group to provide their clients with a wide range of fiduciary services:
Campbell is pleased by the community support she has received thus far. Last fall when she went door to door while campaigning, she enjoyed seeing the city through the eyes of her constituents. Many told her they appreciate the low taxes, the town’s safety, and the schools. They expressed concerns, however, about Carmel becoming overdeveloped. “We must have conscientious growth in our city and make sure the infrastructure can keep up with that growth,” says Campbell, who is now officially one of Carmel’s biggest fans.

pring has finally sprung. It’s that time of year when you want to feel refreshed and clean, and declutter your house while you’re at it. With the weather starting to warm up, you’ll want to start heading outside to enjoy the sun and fresh air. Nevertheless, we all have a need to clean this time of year so what is the best way to tackle this year’s spring cleaning to-do list? It doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and it can even be fun. Getting the house in working order again feels good, and you can do it. Here are a few tips that will help you along to a very successful spring cleaning campaign. TAKE IT ONE ROOM AT A TIME Houses can be overwhelming when it comes to cleaning, so be sure to break your cleaning down into smaller, manageable projects. One easy way to do this is to think in terms of one room at a time. Use a room checklist as a place to start, and also as a way to prevent forgetting about items you might not always clean. If you’ve already cleaned some items in certain rooms then feel free to skip, but you are sure to find something that’s taken a back seat all winter and needs a deep clean. Start with rooms that get the most traffic so that if your plans get derailed, you’ll still have a sense of accomplishment. CLEAR THE CLUTTER One of the biggest and best parts of spring cleaning is the purging of anything and everything you don’t need anymore. The feeling of letting go is a major way to refresh your soul this spring. Think about this in four categories - trash or recycle, sell, donate, and, finally, put away. There are always things we want to keep, and some we can do without. Make piles for each. If you choose to sell, list items on Facebook Marketplace as you are setting those items aside. With regard to donations, see if you can fill a bag to donate every day for a month. You can also plan a garage sale - cleaning is so much easier with the clutter out of the way. FAMILY FUN Get your family involved. Throw on some music and add in some family incentives to get everyone on the same page with donations and trash. There’s no need for you to do all the work! DON’T IGNORE SEASONAL CHORES We all know there are chores that should be done seasonally, and we typically ignore them. Now that the weather is getting nicer, tackle chores like cleaning grills, atCarmel.com / MARCH 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 35

There are many cleaning supplies and tools out there that companies want you to think that you need, but it’s better to refrain from buying everything. Having dozens and dozens of cleaning products on hand at all times just clutters up the cabinets. Along with your mop, broom and vacuum, make sure you have a good all-purpose cleaner on hand for most projects. Other basics include an all-purpose powder or liquid cleaner for larger washable surfaces, an abrasive cleaner for small, heavily soiled areas, a nonabrasive cleaner for gentle cleaning on surfaces that scratch easily, chlorine bleach, glass cleaner, a furniture duster, and a toilet-bowl cleaner. These items should get you started quite nicely. CALL IN THE PROS If your budget allows, there might be a few things you could take off of your list and bring in a professional to clean. Window, carpet and upholstery cleaning are much easier tasks for pros who do it all the time. Not only will this save you time, but it also might save you money as certain tasks often require tools you probably don’t have on hand. Hopefully these tips will help to get your spring cleaning off to a great start this year. If you want more help, there are plenty of spring cleaning checklists out there with specific tasks to keep you on track. There’s no need to scour the web for hours and hours - search “Spring Cleaning Checklist” online and plenty of lists will pop up. Pick your favorite and go down the list until you are done (or exhausted, whichever comes first). Good luck!
CODE NINJAS INDIANA NATIVE OPENS KIDS CODING CENTERS ACROSS CENTRAL INDIANA Writer / Trisha Turner Photography Provided by Code Ninjas
Cathi Canfield works in staffing, so she’s no stranger to the needs of the modern workforce. One of those needs is computer coding. But the benefits of coding go beyond the skill itself. Learning to code, Canfield says, also strengthens problem solving, selfconfidence and self-reliance. That’s why she wanted her own daughter to learn to code. And it’s why she’s now the franchise owner for a center that teaches coding to children ages 7-14.
Code Ninjas opened in Carmel in 2019, giving kids the opportunity to spend two hours each week — after school or on Saturdays — creating computer games and working toward building their own apps. A second local location, in Fishers, opened last June, with a Zionsville Code Ninjas planned for 2020. “Our goal first and foremost is to encourage a love of learning,” Canfield says. “I’ve had students who have come to me, and some parents, who say, ‘This is exactly what we’ve been looking for.’ Hopefully it’s a wonderful, safe, positive place for kids who want to pursue this, to lift them up and encourage that part of their brain.” atCarmel.com / MARCH 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 37
At Code Ninjas, children follow a belt system like that of karate or taekwondo. Each level of experience and accomplishment earns the student a different color of belt, all the way through the development of an app that is part of receiving the top-level, black belt. Students can make their self-created apps available through Apple or Google. A former Zionsville teacher directs Code Ninjas in Carmel, and 10 high school and college students work directly with children as “senseis.” Now a resident of Charlotte, N.C., Canfield is a southern Indiana native who previously
lived in Zionsville. It was in Charlotte that Canfield’s daughter was a student at a Code Ninjas, and the karate-themed approach to achievement provided a familiar element to a new experience. When children head into the Code Ninjas learning area — dubbed the dojo, of course — they take part in self-directed learning through a game-based curriculum. When students face obstacles in their work, senseis work with them to develop solutions. While the senseis serve as guides, the students solve their own problems. “There’s a lot of encouragement, and they communicate well,” Canfield says of the senseis. “But for the student, it’s, ‘I made a mistake, and that’s okay. I learned, and now I have a new game I didn’t have last week or last month. With my own brain power, I can solve these problems.’” Pleased with her family’s experience with Code Ninjas in Charlotte, Canfield asked about opportunities to get involved in the Texas-based business. When she learned she could become a franchise owner, she thought of her former home, the Carmel area. With its reputation for strong schools and commitment to technology-based companies, it seemed a perfect fit. Sure enough, Canfield says, the area has enthusiastically received its first Code Ninjas location. In Carmel, everyone from teachers to parent organizations has been eager to assist. And in the few months that site has been open, one boy and one girl already have achieved second-level (yellow belt) status, putting them ahead of pace for typical Code Ninjas students. Many local parents have jobs that require coding, Canfield says, but they had to wait until high school or college for opportunities to learn that skill. So they appreciate Code Ninjas’ emphasis on learning for a younger age group. “They understand what this opens up for their children,” she says. Not only that, but Code Ninjas offers children positive role models, with the 38 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MARCH 2020 / atCarmel.com
“IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT GAMES AND APPS. THERE’S AN OPPORTUNIT Y TO MAKE A HUGE IMPACT ON THE WORLD BY THINKING ABOUT THINGS THAT CAN HELP PEOPLE.” senseis sharing information about their work in high school and college. And Canfield sees an even larger purpose as well — one that encourages the use of technology to enhance quality of life. “At the end of the day, for me, personally, there’s coding for humanity,” she says. “It’s not all about games and apps. There’s an opportunity to make a huge impact on the world by thinking about things that can help people.” To learn more about Code Ninjas, visit codeninjas.com.
