FRESH FROM THE FARM CARMEL FARMERS MARKET RETURNS THIS SUMMER
Writer / Megan Arszman Photography Provided
Kicking off its 24th year, the Carmel Farmers Market will run on Saturdays through the last weekend of September.
“We have a mission in bringing the best fresh, wholesome, safe foods that are locally grown by Indiana farmers to the people of Carmel and the northside,” says Ron Carter, president of Carmel Farmers Markets. “We make sure all of our vendors are from Indiana and the products are grown and/or

produced in Indiana.” It began with only eight full-time vendors and has grown to now offer 72 full-time vendors at Carter Green. The location, which is on the campus of Carmel’s Center for the Performing Arts, was designed to be
the home of many outdoor events including the market. Each space, which measures 20’x20’, has its own electrical connection and allows for vendors to park their vehicles conveniently at their spot. “The supply chain from our vendors to our market is very short compared to the supermarket,” Carter says. “We know that the average food prepared or produced by our vendors comes from 26 miles away from the market. The average travel for supermarket food is 1,500 miles.” As a way to ensure the validity of their push to offer only Indiana products, Carter says the Carmel Farmers Market is unique in that it includes a committee that visits vendors at their farms to ensure they have the space to grow what they’re selling at the market, and that they are producing in a certified commercial kitchen.
Live music will be featured each Saturday in the pavilion. Volunteers are available at each entrance to assist shoppers in finding what they’re looking for upon entering the market. Families are invited to relax in the seating area.
“We don’t allow any homemade products in our market, only those made in a certified commercial kitchen,” Carter says. “Certified commercial kitchens mean that they were inspected and certified by the county health department, thus guaranteeing food safety and quality.”
The market is known for the variety of vendors for every taste. As always, new vendors will showcase items that are hard to find in typical grocery stores. Such vendors include American Dream Nut Butter based out of Greenfield, as well as a vendor that sells vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free spreads.
TownePost.com / MAY 2022 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 7
The 2021 market saw more than 110,000 visitors, and Carter hopes to welcome even more this year. “We’re all - and I mean all the volunteers - very, very excited about the Farmers Market this year,” Carter says. Visit the Carmel Farmers Market every Saturday through September from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Visit the official website for parking information and a full event calendar at carmelfarmersmarket.com.

Skilled trade careers offer steady work because people will always need plumbing, heating and cooling in their homes and offices. In addition, many people love to work with their hands. The team at Peterman Brothers recognizes this, and in October of 2020 they began Top Tech Academy, their own internal trade school that offers both HVAC and plumbing courses. A not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization, The Heroes Club provides financial assistance and resources for the fine women and men of the Carmel Police Department, Carmel Fire Department, Hamilton County Sheriff ’s Department and Indiana State Police serving Carmel and
What is a hero? According to Oxford Languages, a hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. However, to the Carmel community, our heroes are so much more. They are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters,

aunts, uncles, mentors, and friends who put their lives on the line every day without fail to keep us safe and help in times of most urgent need. The chief instrument of this support is in the form of an accidental death insurance policy that is provided to the family members or designated beneficiaries of an
officer who loses his or her life in the line of duty serving in Carmel or Clay Township. To honor and protect our dedicated public servants, in 1996 a group of businessmen founded The Heroes Club, funding a life insurance policy to provide a safety net for families of any member of the police force, firefighter, or public safety officer that is killed in the line of duty in Carmel or Clay Township. Starting with small contributions, a vision and big plans, this not-for-profit volunteer-based organization has grown the accidental death policy from $50,000 initially to $400,000 today. Tom Melangton, President of The Heroes Club announced the increase to the existing $300,000 life insurance policy to $400,000 effective in January 2022. “We are pleased to announce that we have been able to add to this portfolio, which has become the largest insurance policy of its kind in the world,” Melangton says. “This
unique benefit has enabled our community to attract and retain world-class women and men highly skilled in the field of public safety.” “If the unthinkable happens, we are in a strong position to provide financial support to the families and beneficiaries of the public servants touched,” adds Michelle Brown, Heroes Club Vice President. “We find a way to link civilians with those officials involved in public service, not only through contributions to the life insurance policy, but also through events where citizens can interact with police and firefighters to build relationships.” “It is vitally important that everyone in Carmel supports the fire, police and emergency medical service officers that make our city one of the safest anywhere,” says Mayor James Brainard. “This benefit is important not only for our officers, but for the families of these officers.”
According to Police Chief Jeff Horner, “The Heroes Club has been a great partner and supporter of the Carmel Police Department for many years. They provide the comfort and peace of mind to all of us working in public safety that our loved ones will be financially supported if we’re called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice while serving our community.” “The Heroes Club continues to be a

If you’re a realtor, it helps to be friendly, personable and gregarious, and that certainly describes Stacey Sobczak, who recently joined Compass, the country’s largest real estate brokerage made up of an elite group of agents. “I moved every single year of my entire life because my dad loved to move,” Sobczak says. “As a result, I don’t know a stranger.” After graduating from high school in Georgia, Sobczak attended Indiana University, and later got married and had two little boys. Her husband passed away when her sons were young so Sobczak became a single mom who had to hustle
to make ends meet. She waited tables but also began baking pies and selling them to restaurants. Ultimately, her entrepreneurial skills led her to open Broad Ripple Pie Company. She was so successful that for five years running, teachers at a local high school asked her to be a guest speaker for their entrepreneurial class where she shared her knowledge and expertise regarding how to build a flourishing business. She was even honored with Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year runner-up honors. In 1991 Sobczak’s world got brighter when she met Dave Sobczak, owner of Sobczak Construction Services. She had decided to open a store at the Indianapolis City Market and hired him to build it. He not TownePost.com / MAY 2022 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 13
only built her store, but also stole her heart. The two married and blended their families, including their children, Brittany, Ryan, Scott, Sam and Katy. Life was beautiful but hectic during the child-rearing years. “Our kids grew up going to the Bridgewater Club, playing golf and swimming,” she says. She and her husband have been residents of Hamilton County for nearly 30 years. After closing the pie company in 1994, Sobczak went to work for her husband. Then in 2009 she began selling real estate with F.C. Tucker. “I got busy from the get-go and never slowed down,” Sobczak says. “People kept telling me, ‘You’re going too fast!’ But I only

knew one speed.’ ” That speed and tenacity came from working tirelessly for years with middle school and high school parent-teacher organizations. As a result she got to know all of the teachers, staff and parents in the area. On top of that, her children were involved in countless sports so her social network was vast. Therefore, when anyone in the area had real estate needs, they made a beeline to Sobczak. “People trusted me because they knew me,” says Sobczak, who sold her 500th house last May. In addition, Sobczak is a past president of the board at the Heart and Soul Free Clinic in Westfield. The clinic provides quality health care to uninsured and underinsured people in Central Indiana regardless of their social, cultural and economic status. They have a mobile unit and even a free dental clinic. Sobczak, who has always sold luxury, highend homes, was thrilled when Compass leaders invited her to join their team in July of 2021. Compass, the biggest luxury brand in the country, only recruits top agents in the field as they pride themselves on building a group of select individuals that will help the company grow. They pair the industry’s top talent with cutting-edge technology to make searching and selling experiences seamless. Compass consists of a national network of local experts who are tasked with helping
both first-time and seasoned buyers make well-informed decisions. They also provide their clients with the most stellar marketing in the country. “The tools they give us are like nothing I’ve ever seen,” Sobczak says. “This has been one of the most exciting things I’ve done in my career. I’m networking with people from the west coast whose average sales are $30 million.”
also helped to organize the movers and get the family set up. “They drove through the night with the little kids in the middle of the crisis and didn’t want to stop at a gas station with these babies because everyone was so worried about COVID. They actually just bought their third house from me. She loves to take a house and transform it. I just love that family.”
Sobczak lives for these kinds of connections with her clients. She has worked with some Sobczak is continually voted an Indianapolis families three or four times. I sold 54 homes in 2020. It was crazy.” She showed a lot of houses virtually, and many people bought homes sight unseen. She recalls a family who moved to the area at the height of the pandemic. The wife, who was pregnant with her fourth baby, had twin girls and a little boy, and the family was moving here for her new job. “She was almost ready to deliver and we had to find a home for her virtually, then have everything shipped here and have the place cleaned, painted, and carpet put down before they arrived,” says Sobczak, who 14 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MAY 2022 / TownePost.com
It’s no surprise that the majority of her work comes from repeat clients and referrals. Since Dave is a builder and she’s a realtor, Sobczak likes to say, “He builds them, I sell them.” She is also relishing a new role in life - that of grandmother. Their youngest daughter recently had a baby, and Sobczak loves to spend time with her granddaughter Ella. “I’m having the most fun I’ve ever had in my life,” she says. “My heart melts when I see her. She’s the light of my life.” Who knows? Maybe when she’s a bit older, Sobczak will teach Ella how to bake pies. “I still like to bake,” she says. “But I don’t like to get my kitchen dirty!” Stacey Sobczak is a real estate licensee affiliated with Compass, a licensed real estate broker and abides by federal, state and local equal housing opportunity laws.

We’ve made it through another Indiana winter, which means…it’s time to spring clean! It’s often not just our cars that are dirty. Chances are, your floors need some TLC. But don’t call the first carpet cleaner you find, as the results vary greatly. It’s not unusual for consumers to have a mediocre experience following a carpet cleaning because most companies use some type
of hot water extraction, coupled with a cleaning agent or shampoo that doesn’t get pulled up all the way, leaving the carpet feeling crunchy or sticky. Worse yet, that soap or shampoo becomes a dirt-attracting agent so spots appear over and over again. Zerorez, a green carpet-cleaning company, offers something different. “The founders of Zerorez owned a number of commercial properties, and one of their biggest costs was cleaning and replacing carpet,” says Owner Ray Kennedy. “They wanted to solve this problem so they came up with the Zerorez system.” As the name suggests, zero residue is left behind. They use a high-grade, hot water extraction process, but instead of soaps or shampoos, they use high-alkaline water that becomes the cleaning solution. Not only is the patented process effective, but it’s also safe for kids and pets. “In today’s energy-efficient homes, houses don’t breathe as much, so if you’ve got chemicals that come from the cleaning, they’re staying in the house and getting into your air,” Kennedy says. “With Zerorez you don’t have any of that.” The other great factor is that because they don’t apply chemicals or detergents, not as much water is used in the cleaning process versus other methods. This translates to carpets drying considerably faster. 16 / 2022 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE 1616/ /CARMEL CARMEL MAGAZINE MAGAZINE / /MAY MAY2022 2022/ /TownePost.com TownePost.com
“People are accustomed to having to stay off their floors for 24 hours,” Kennedy says. “With us, it’s four to six hours.” Clients also appreciate the highly trained and “zertified” technicians at Zerorez, who care greatly about customer satisfaction. When asked, “Would you recommend us to your family and friends?” 80 to 90% of customers say yes, compared to the average home service company, who scores between 30 and 40%. Customer Michael Flores says, “The technicians are very professional, efficient, knowledgeable, and the carpets look and feel great.” Zerorez currently has a 4.9-star review average among thousands of reviews on Facebook and Google, because clients appreciate their product, professionalism, and 30-day Gotta Love It Guarantee, which means that they will redo any area if you are unsatisfied with the result. They clean not just carpets but also tile, oriental rugs, upholstery, hardwoods and mattresses. “Especially in the wake of COVID, people want a clean, healthy home,” Kennedy says. Zerorez offers monthly specials, so check out their current promotion by visiting their website. To book an appointment, call, text, email or go online. In addition, if you’re interested in becoming a technician or would like to start your own Zerorez franchise, call 317-561-5600 or visit zerorezindianapolis.com.

In Italy, a successful dinner is one that is experienced. That’s one of Emily Houser’s biggest takeaways from studying abroad while in school, and it’s what she strives for daily as the owner and operator of 317 Charcuterie, located in Carmel City Center. “I fell in love with the art of charcuterie,” Houser says. “You eat with your eyes first.” After spending 13 years in the food service industry, Houser started 317 Charcuterie as an order-only business in July of 2021, working out of a commercial kitchen in Carmel. Her dream was realized when her store was opened in November. Now, 317 Charcuterie offers dine-in, workshops, private events and catering options. From one person to 400, catering parties and events isn’t a problem for Houser and her charcuterie crew. Customers looking for a sophisticated snack can partake in a new option, great for those who like to grab and go - Char-Cutie Cups. Houser describes these as perfect afternoon snacks with two types of salami, a variety of cheeses and
fruits, and an artisan crisp. Charcuterie boards can be a combination of artisan meats and cheeses, olives, fruits and nuts, perfect to satisfy the sweet or savory fan. Houser chooses her charcuterie items based on how well each component complements others, and looks for regional

tastes and specialties. Even vegetarians can partake in a board, thanks to new vegetarian salami options. For the guy or gal who loves to host parties and gatherings often, there might be a desire to learn how to plan the perfect board. As a way to share her love of creating art
with foods, Houser offers live classes and workshops where selecting the right meats, cheeses, fruits and more is discussed, as well as how to properly and artistically display them on a board or table. In an effort to keep foods fresh and safe for consumption, catering and orders are local delivery only (no shipping). Each item is packaged tightly for delivery so items stay in place and remain fresh. Orders are accepted a minimum of 24 hours in advance, with special emphasis for holidays. “We sometimes need a little more extra lead time for certain items if there’s a specific request, so we suggest calling us as early as possible,” Houser says. Outside, athletic courts are slated for pickleball, tennis and bocce ball. In the planning phase is an inside golf simulator plus a coffee bar. Tastefully decorated, the center will be the spot for community events and meetings. The beautifully landscaped setting is perfect for group walks or even a chance for some independent individual time. Dog walkers
and bird watchers love the lakes and nature trails. Several parks are located within the grounds and include spaces dedicated to yoga, butterflies and dogs.
