Scott Jasek and Gary Sinise
THE FASTEST SEAT IN SPORTS Ride Like a Pro at the Indy Racing Experience Writer / Kevin Conrad Photography Provided
Imagine traveling at 180 miles per hour, just inches off the ground. It’s enough to give even an astronaut a thrill, but you don’t have to be NASA-certified to experience it. That’s thanks to a Center Grove resident who made his racing dream come true.
Jasek presented his business plan to then-IMS Chairman, President and CEO Tony George, and the IMS marketing division. “Tony loved the idea,” Jasek says.
As they say, the rest is history. The Indy Racing Experience was born in 2001. Jasek teamed up with IndyCar team owners Joe Former Budget Car and Truck Rental executive Scott Jasek came Kennedy and Jeff Sinden to create the fastest seat in racing with up with the idea when visiting the famed Indianapolis Motor its IndyCar driving and two-seater programs. Jasek and Kennedy Speedway’s (IMS) Gasoline Alley. He asked about driving an are the co-owners today, having bought out Sinden years ago. IndyCar. He was told only professional drivers could drive an IndyCar. That gave Jasek an idea. For 20 years, the Indy Racing Experience has been providing “I drew the IndyCar two-seater on a sheet of paper like a 5-yearold kid,” Jasek says. “What if you stretched it, and I’ll sit in the back and let the professional drive it?”
exhilarating, heart-pounding, one-of-a-kind experiences for race fans, car enthusiasts and celebrities. Who would have imagined a non-IndyCar driver would have an opportunity to ride in an IndyCar around the most famous race track in the world?
6 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / MAY 2021 / atCenterGrove.com
More than 100,000 rides have been given to race fans, car enthusiasts, thrill seekers, and celebrities including Morgan Freeman, Lady Gaga, Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon and Tony Dungy. “Some of the best rides to me personally are when a family buys grandpa a ride in the car,” Jasek says. “They’ve been buying gifts for grandpa and he’s not happy with them. Here he is in a fire suit and he looks miserable. You get him in the car, and after the ride he gets out and he’s screaming like a 10-year-old little girl. No one has ever seen grandpa react this way. Those are the best. We’ve had times when people have cancer and their last wish is to take a ride. Those are touching. Those are the ones I remember the most.” American astronaut Scott Kelly rode in a two-seater at the IMS. Jasek says Kelly raved about the incredible speeds. “When he got out of the car he said, ‘I’ve never felt speed like that. I’ve taken off in a rocket and I’ve flown fighter jets, but the fastest I ever felt was a two-seater IndyCar at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway,’” Jasek says. “When you’re in this car you’re so low to the ground and close to the wall, the sensation of speed is dramatic.” The Indy Racing Experience’s most famed and iconic driver is 1969 Indy 500 champion, Mario Andretti. “We have a lot of drivers, but Mario is the most famous,” Jasek says. “A few years ago he lost his wife and most recently he lost his twin brother Aldo. His family knows how important the twoseater is to Mario. It’s keeping the legend doing what he loves. He’s the greatest race car driver ever.” Andretti, 81, enjoys getting behind the wheel of the two-seater atCenterGrove.com / MAY 2021 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 7

lucky fan and guest. Enter at ruoff.com.
“Whether passengers are riding with me or another IndyCar driver, the two-seat IndyCar is a unique experience,” he said in a recent press release. “It’s easy to try tennis, golf, baseball, ice skating, and any other sport, but the only way to experience the thrill of an IndyCar is to be in the cockpit of a race car with an IndyCar driver at the wheel. For anyone who enjoys an extreme experience, riding along in the twoseater is incredible. If you are a thrill-seeker, you’ll love the Fastest Seat in Sports. People from all walks of life have tried it, including race fans, celebrities, journalists, active-duty military and even a special lady on her 100th birthday. I love being part of the program and I know other IndyCar drivers enjoy taking passengers as much as I do.”
For more information on how to make your racing dreams come true, go to IndyRacingExperience.com.
The Indy Racing Experience recently secured a major corporate sponsor, Ruoff Mortgage. The partnership helps to keep rides affordable for patrons. Also, Ruoff Mortgage is offering a “Win a Ride & Dine with Mario Andretti” sweepstakes for one

OUTER EDGE AXE LOUNGE PROVIDES A UNIQUE ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCE Writer / Renee Larr Photography / Brandi Caplinger & Provided
After a particularly stressful year for the community, a new adventure for friends, family and groups has emerged on the southside - Outer Edge Axe Lounge. The Brothers family felt that a concept combining axe throwing with an upscale bar was needed in town. “There are a handful of axe-throwing places out there, but nothing around here quite like ours,” Ethan Brothers says. “We wanted to bring something new to this area where people could express themselves in a different manner. We wanted our place atCenterGrove.com / MAY 2021 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 11
to have a rustic, backwoods, mountainlodge feel, where people would get an experience not yet felt in Greenwood.” The trio of Ethan Brothers, Mark Brothers and Adam Eckert, and the helping hands of those closest to them, performed the entire buildout of the venue.
“Everything we did in the buildout of Outer Edge had a purpose and an intention behind it,” Eckert says. “Guests walk right into the bar where they sign waivers, get drinks and hang out. From there, the transition to axe throwing is seamless.” Outer Edge opened in September of

2020, and construction took a full year. “It was important that it had an authentic feel,” Eckert says. “I think when people come in, they see pieces of us everywhere they look.” Ethan strongly agrees.
“We wanted the inside to show that we went the extra mile with the design,” he says. “Different is what it was all about.”
SAME DAY APPOINTMENTS!
The business is a family atmosphere, from what goes on behind the scenes to how guests are taken care of while visiting. “Our family are our best friends, and our best friends are our family,” Ethan says. “Mixing together the personalities of myself, my sister Allison [Brothers], soon-to-be brother in-law Anthony Bueckers, and lifelong friend Adam creates a remarkable experience here at Outer Edge.” Not only does the family orientation and the look and feel of Outer Edge make it stand out, but how it all functions inside also sets the venue apart. “We do our best at making our patrons feel unrestricted,” Allison says. “Once we spend a few minutes with a group instructing how to throw axes, we go over safety precautions and a list of games and rules. At this point, we step into the background and simply host so each group is then comfortable to be in their own limelight.” “With all that said, the next step is for you to come experience what it’s like to live on the edge with us for a weekend,” adds Ethan.
There’s nothing worse than a traumatic injury, infection, new wound, or ingrown toenail and being told the next available appointment is 10 days out. We can treat you TODAY! 33 E County Line Rd, Suite B, Greenwood, IN 46143 (317) 882-9303 | Southsidefootclinic.com

CODE NINJAS
POPULAR KIDS CODING DOJO OPENS IN GREENWOOD Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
A new activity option for children ages seven to 14 has come to Center Grove. Code Ninjas, located at 1259 North State Road 135, offers children the opportunity to learn coding while having fun playing video games. Stop by the dojo and there will be no questions as to why Code Ninjas’ mission statement is, “Kids have fun, parents see results.”
Joshua Grow, Center Grove resident and owner of the franchise, feels the business combines the things he enjoys participating in. “I’ve been involved in software for the last 10 years,” he says. “Currently, I am a software development engineer in downtown Indianapolis. I’ve always offered free tutoring for students at Ivy Tech and I love kids - they are so fun and fantastic to work with. I was scrolling through Facebook and an ad for Code Ninjas came up. I clicked on it, looked at the programs they have and immediately knew this was a perfect match for what I would like to offer within our community. All the curriculum was laid out and handled with care. It put all my interests in one place, so I made an inquiry. It’s a good fit for me and ties a large portion of my passions and interest into one.” The Code Ninjas facility is 2,570 square feet and, just like in karate, the room where all the action happens is called a dojo. Children, or Ninjas, at Code Ninjas play their way to earning different belts, starting with white and ending at black. Colored wristbands corresponding to belt levels are used to not only scan into the program as they enter but to also show off their progress while inside. There are belt up ceremonies, including gong ringing, candy bars, and a certificate of completion, to celebrate moving from one level to another.
atCenterGrove.com / MAY 2021 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 15
The location is conveniently located near numerous other childcentered businesses. “I grew up in Lebanon, Indiana,” Grow says. “My wife Quinn and I moved to the area three years ago. We visited friends in Greenwood and it seemed to be a great community. It’s a wonderful location for Code Ninjas as it’s in the same building as a wrestling academy and a cheer and gymnastics studio. There is so much for kids to do in one area.” A typical Code Ninja is a child with a high interest in video games, plus a desire to make them. There is a one-to-five ratio of staff to children. COVID-safe protocols are in place. As children progress through their belts, they can learn up to four languages. The first is Scratch, a good language for younger ninjas and an integral part of “Fun-damentals” coursework. It’s a drag and drop editor tool and doesn’t require any typing. During white through green belts comes JavaScript, one of the best-known web-based languages - a wonderful skill for anyone to learn. Blue belt introduces Lua, a programming language used in the popular gaming platform Roblox. Finally, in purple through black belts, is C# in Unity3D.

This platform is used for developing many Triple-A games produced by companies such as Steam for PC, Nintendo Switch and Xbox. Participants have several options from which to choose. Code Ninjas Create is the standard program and allows eight one-hour sessions per month. A set time can be scheduled or ninjas can drop in at parents’ convenience. There are also summer and year-round camps involving Minecraft, Roblox and YouTube.
Reservations are required for two programs. Parents Night Out includes two hours of working on fun Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities and building video games or working on robotics. Birthday parties for up to 10 Ninjas are a two-hour celebration of playing video games and STEM activities. Code Ninjas is located at 1259 N State Rd 135 Suite B in Greenwood. ason Newbold’s new Greenwoodbased private aviation company, BOLDJets, has really taken flight.
Newbold, a Center Grove resident, sells private aircraft to individuals and corporations. The aircraft give owners the opportunity to fly at their leisure, access to more airports nationwide and avoid commercial airports, long waits, and big crowds. “BOLDJets was formed when I realized an opportunity in an ever-changing environment and growing industry,” Newbold says. “My passion is aviation, but my satisfaction comes from assisting clients through the process and building longlasting relationships.” Newbold says BOLDJets, which launched in November, is a boutique private aviation solutions company, focusing on private jets, turboprops, and late model piston aircraft, as well as aircraft management and growing private aviation in the area. “We specialize in aircraft sales and acquisitions, and we can manage the client’s aircraft, or use our network to facilitate any charter needs,” Newbold says. “We are a licensed aircraft dealer in the state of Indiana, as well as a member of the National Aviation Business Association. BOLDJets is a full-time operation that intends on adding additional services and we have already started growing the team.” Newbold grew up in Bedford and
graduated from Bedford North Lawrence High School in 2002. “My grandfather has been a pilot since he was 16 years old, owning multiple aircraft and flying all over the west coast,” Newbold says. “He grew up in Southern California. He was the chief flight instructor at the Bedford Gus Grissom airport for 30 years
and has over 7,000 hours of flight time. My grandfather has really been my inspiration to get into aviation and is one of my biggest supporters. I have been fortunate enough to fly with him over the years. I love hearing stories from my dad telling me how my grandfather used to fly them all over the southwest region. My business and client-centric attitude come from watching my father successfully own and operate a company he had for 27 years. It was always

client satisfaction first, business later.” Newbold is also a combat veteran and completed two tours of duty in Iraq. “I joined the Army six months after the events of 9/11,” Newbold says. “I felt as if I was called to serve my country however I can. I completed two tours for Operation Iraqi Freedom, including an airborne operation in western Iraq in 2004. After completing my duty, I returned home to Bedford, Indiana, and joined the corporate world.” Newbold previously worked at another aircraft brokerage firm before forming BOLDJets. “Prior to starting BOLDJets, I was an aircraft sales director for an aircraft brokerage firm in Indianapolis,” Newbold says. “I have been involved with and completed many transactions - everything from small, single-engine piston aircraft to medium-size business jets.”
San Diego, CA businessman, Mr. Peterson, and prior owner of a 2018 Phenom 300E says this about working with Newbold, “Bottom line is that Jason did a very good job of not only representing his client but also representing me in the transaction. He was always a complete gentleman, thorough, and never pushy and never frustrated with the minor delays at the end. I would highly recommend him to anyone selling or buying an airplane.”
BOLDJets is based at the Indy South Greenwood Airport.
Newbold thoroughly enjoys the aviation industry, from meeting pilots at local airports to attending Oshkosh AirVenture and other airshows nationwide.
“We are certainly in the most interesting times I can remember,” he says. “Flying is

“I am already working with clients around Indianapolis to purchase different aircraft,” Newbold says. “A lot of my clients this year are new to private aviation and first-time aircraft owners, others wanting something bigger and/or faster.” Newbold is in a growing industry.

George Kopetsky came from tough times. When he was just 15 years old, his father was struck by a car and killed. At that point he worked to support his mother and brother, and throughout his high school career he sometimes struggled to make it to class. One day the principal warned him that if he missed another day of school, he was going to turn him over to the draft board. He followed through with his promise, and six weeks later, at age 18, George was drafted into World War II. When he returned home from the Battle of the Bulge, he became a jack of all trades, hauling materials with his pickup truck, taking excavation jobs digging basements, streets and sewers, as well as driving a school bus to earn extra cash. In 1953 George married his wife Patricia, and the couple went on to have six children, David, George, Steve, Kathy, Laura and Linda. In August of 1968, the couple decided to take on a new endeavor and started a car washing business on County Line Road. “We had a big discussion as to whether we
should open a self-serve car wash with just a bay, or do one of those nice drive-throughs,” Patricia says. “I said, ‘I don’t think self-serve will support us,’ so we went for the big one.” The tunnel car wash was high-tech for the time and required more employees, so their children helped run the business. Their twin daughters were 9 years old when they first learned to operate the cash register.
partnered with some lifelong family friends. It was a match made in heaven, as their partners had the know-how on marketing car washes, while the Kopetskys had experience operating facilities.
“Everybody in the family had to work - it was just a necessity,” says Patricia, who recalls running to the bank to make deposits at 11 p.m. in her pajamas.
From the get-go, the families were invested in giving back to their community. Not only do they regularly sponsor Center Grove sports and the arts, including baseball, basketball, football, soccer, show choir and band, but each month they also donate a portion of their sales to a person, club or organization that could use a little extra love, through their Klean to Contribute program. In March of this year they raised $2,000 for Jason Mueller, a beloved teacher and coach with the Center Grove school system who has been sick with ulcerative colitis and pancreatitis. Mueller, the voice of the Trojans for all Center Grove varsity athletics, has suffered several health setbacks in recent times, and this fundraiser was appreciated.
In the early 1970s, George changed careers again and began working in the sand and gravel business. At that time, he passed the baton to his wife and son David, who went on to purchase additional car wash locations in 1987, 1988 and 1990. They later sold three of the four car washes. When the fourth went up for sale in 2017, Patricia’s daughter Linda and grandson Austin Gore felt a pull to keep the car washing business in the family, so they bought it. After running that location for a year, they decided to build another car wash and
“It’s been the perfect partnership since day one,” Austin says. “We believe in the concept of staying on top of leading-edge technology.”

wash operator that started in central Indiana. Through the years, the car wash industry has evolved substantially in style, equipment and technology. For instance, the only option to bring a car through a facility used to be by chain and roller. There were two steel grooves the driver had to line up on and if they lined up incorrectly, wheels could get scratched. Now a belted system enables companies to wash lowered cars and trucks, because it only requires 2” of ground clearance. This also equates to no damaged wheels, since there are no grooves. Their most popular package is the Full Buff ‘N Shine, which takes traditional hand wax to the next level through automation. This method is 100% unique to the business. Today, camera systems installed throughout the entire facility link up with an artificial intelligence program, which scans every vehicle that loads onto the belt and measures space between vehicles. Typically, car washes have a green light at the end of the wash tunnel. The problem is that sometimes the driver doesn’t immediately move, which can cause a collision with the car behind them. The camera technology, however, automatically detects whether the gap between vehicles is reduced and shuts down the entire facility if so. The car wash environment itself has also changed from decades ago. New architecture has brought in more natural light, which helps to eliminate claustrophobia in customers. “Parents tell us all the time that their kids are only OK going to a car wash if it’s here, because they don’t feel they’re trapped in a dark room with loud machines,” Austin says. Kopetsky Auto Wash is located at 5865 North State Road 135 in Greenwood. For more information, call 844-927-4386 or visit kwash.com.
