One step inside Brick & Mortar, and you’re immediately surprised at how spacious it really is. Located in Old Town Greenwood, Brick & Mortar is a small establishment identified by a sleek, black facade, nestled between Penelope June Salon to the east, and a new brewery coming soon to the west. This charming gift shop is the creative collaboration of Kelly McLaughlin and her daughter-in-law Ashley McLaughlin. Ashley, a 2014 graduate of Center Grove High School and a 2019 IUPUI grad, married Kelly’s son Max McLaughlin in 2018. Family travels through Europe provided inspiration for the shop owners. “We loved what we experienced in Europe - spaces that were cultivating community and celebrating makers,” Ashley says. “They are a meeting place for the community. We dreamed of a way to make this a reality in our community.” Upon returning home, the McLaughlin ladies wasted no time in making that dream come true. The perfect space was secured, and after a whirlwind renovation, Brick & Mortar opened on April 30. “We have a rule of sorts - everything you see in our boutique are things we love, things that you would find in our own homes, and things we feel our customers will love,” Ashley says. “As the buyer, I’ve created relationships with amazing makers locally, nationally and even internationally. For many of the makers, we are their first and only international stock list.” Brick & Mortar offers a wide array of truly unique merchandise. Here you will find stationary and vegan leather bags by Tinne+Mia of the Netherlands, candles crafted by Indy’s own MOCO Candles, whimsical, fresh-cut flower bouquets by Indy’s Blooms by Wildwood, and much more. Gifts, accessories, skin-care items and self-care apothecary products are just a few more of the one-of-a-kind finds in this delightfully interesting shop. Step out back and you will find yourself on the cozy, enchanting patio TownePost.com / AUGUST 2021 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 11
- a perfect place to enjoy any of their teas or coffees and learn about the individual makers. Ashley and Kelly are invested heavily in Old Town Greenwood, both as shop owners and as residents, and giving back is a pillar of their business plan. They’ve created a fund whereby 10% of all profits are invested back into the community to local nonprofits, awarded each season. Nonprofits can apply for donation money through the Contact form on the official shop website. “We learned recently that back in the 1980s, this exact space was occupied by a woman who sold dried flowers and teas, which are two items we will always feature,” Ashley says. “We feel like Brick & Mortar is a sweet homage to that bit of local history.” Visit Brick & Mortar at 215 West Main Street in Greenwood. eremy Pell, fire chief for the White River Township Fire Department, has trained search dogs for more than eight years. His instructor and mentor suggested Pell find a new working dog. The pair were on the lookout across the United States for a suitable dog.
says. “Lo and behold, I see a news article that afternoon about a dog named Roadie who was abandoned in Johnson County.”
“I went to see her and did some tests with her to see her viability for search work,” Pell says. “In September 2020, I adopted her.”
Roadie was left with a note on her collar saying her dad couldn’t take care of her because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Animal Control picked up Roadie and made contact with Pell, given his role in the fire department.
Pell wasn’t fond of the name Roadie, so he changed the shepherd mix’s name to Rosie.

attention.”
“I’m training her part time, which is difficult,” Pell says. “The Johnson County Sheriff ’s Office has been very supportive. Rosie has already participated in one school safety talk in Edinburgh. Both have been very supportive of Rosie and her training.”
“We talk about the things Rosie is trained to do,” Pell says. “We talk about safety and do demonstrations with her. We tell the kids if they pay attention during the discussion, Rosie will play hide-and-seek with them. Those kids just light up, and you can tell you have their undivided
“I told one of my friends at search training that if God intended for me to have a dog, he would drop one in my backyard,” Pell
“I thought it was close enough that it wouldn’t be a big change for her,” Pell says. Pell is currently training the two-and-a-half-
Rosie lives with Pell and his family, including his two dogs. “She’s a big baby,” Pell says. “She has her own space and her own toys. She’s sort of the top dog in the family right now. training as well. Ruby and Rosie are great playmates.” The White River Fire Department joined Project Lifesaver in 2009. Project Lifesaver is an international not-for-profit organization whose primary mission is to use locating technology to search and rescue people with cognitive disorders. “Liam Price is a local teen on the autism spectrum,” Pell says. “He’s worked with us since he was much younger. Recently, he came on to work with us as an intern. He’s spent some time with Rosie doing some obedience training. I really hope to find a way for Liam to share his experiences with the kids in this area using Rosie as a teaching tool.”
SAME DAY APPOINTMENTS!
Price enjoys the time he’s spent with Rosie so far. “She listens to me pretty well,” Price says. “I’ll be working with her all summer. We’re working on commands for search and rescue. I’m studying communications at the University of Indianapolis. I’m hoping to focus on public speaking in fire departments and police departments. I want to give speeches on what can be done to improve their communities.” Pell is impressed by Price’s immediate bond with Rosie. “I have taught obedience for a very, very long time,” Pell says. “I’ve seen people and dogs interact, and they took to each other immediately. He had her attention, her eye contact, and she walked with him. It was incredible to watch.” Typically, fire departments utilize dogs as accelerant detection dogs. “Fortunately for our department, we don’t have many intentionally set fires, so we’ve never really utilized dogs in that way,” Pell says. “What we do have a lot of is people with dementia or cognitive issues who wander away. For Rosie to be used in this way is extremely innovative. I hope that Rosie will save a life or bring some comfort to a family who has lost a loved one.”

Pell credits local agencies for Rosie’s success. “What really makes Johnson County special is how everyone has worked

But, out of all things, I most definitely can’t wait to meet new people.”
“I am looking forward to this school year hoping for more normality from wearing masks in school and restrictions with sports. My freshman year last year was a learning experience and a challenge but I’m looking forward to having more of a normal year this year.”

NEW QB IN TOWN
GETTING TO KNOW INDIANAPOLIS COLTS QUARTERBACK CARSON WENTZ Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by the Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Carson Wentz has heard the rumors and can confirm - he and Prince Harry are two different people despite their similar looks.
“We’re not the same person,” Wentz says with a laugh. “I hate to break it to some people, but nope.” Traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Indianapolis Colts in March of 2021, Wentz follows in the footsteps of the now-retired Phillip Rivers, who took the Colts to the playoffs in his lone year
with the team. Drafted at number two by Philadelphia in the 2016 NFL Draft, Wentz won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017, where he first played under current Colts Head Coach Frank Reich, who served as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator. Although born in Raleigh, North Carolina,

just thought we had a really good thing in Philly working together, so I think we were both mutually excited to get back and work together again.”
Wentz spent most of his upbringing in North Dakota - a state he still has many ties to today. “Both of my parents are there, and I have a bunch of friends and stuff back there,” Wentz says. “I grew up there, went to high school there and went to college there. North Dakota is definitely home. I love that place and love those people back there.”
While Carson, his wife Madison, and their 1-year-old daughter Hadley have been busy settling in, the Indianapolis community has made sure to welcome them with open arms.
While Indianapolis may be completely new terrain for him and his family, Wentz at least has a familiar face here in town with Reich. “I loved playing for him as my coach and loved working together with him as my offensive coordinator,” Wentz says. “We just really got along well off the field and really connected on a deeper level spiritually. I
“The way we’ve been welcomed and embraced has just been really cool, both football-wise from the organization but also in the community,” Wentz says. “It just seems like such a family-friendly environment. Everyone’s rooting for you, pulling for you and wants you to succeed.” When he’s not out on the gridiron, Wentz also stays busy with a nonprofit he started called
the Audience of One (AO1) Foundation. A devout Christian, Wentz has tried to use his platform for good since entering the NFL. “When I was a rookie, I knew that my purpose was so much bigger than throwing touchdowns on Sunday,” he says. “Coming to my faith when I was in college, I knew there was a platform that was different. Lord knows how long I’ll have that platform, so as a rookie I said, ‘Let’s start the foundation. I don’t know how many years I’ll be in this position to have a voice, have eyes on me and make a difference, so while we’ve got it, let’s make the most of it.’ ” The AO1 Foundation consists of three separate ministries according to Wentz. The first of these is called Thy Kingdom Crumb.
TownePost.com / AUGUST 2021 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 23
“That goes around and gives out free food to anybody and everybody, and also talks with people on the streets, shares the gospel and prays with people,” Wentz says of Thy Kingdom Crumb. “Anybody and everybody is welcome. We look forward to that continuing in Philly, but potentially seeing how we can get involved in a similar fashion out here in the Indianapolis area.” The AO1 Foundation also facilitates an Outdoor Ministry, which aims to serve children with life-threatening illnesses or other life-altering medical situations in order to foster a passion for outdoor activities and bring people closer to God through discipleship. Last but not least, the AO1 Foundation is involved in a sports complex in the country of Haiti. “It’s just been really cool to see God working through it and for us to be obedient to where he calls us to go,” says Wentz of the AO1 Foundation and its three ministries. “It’s been fun to really see lives being impacted and changed, not only on this earth but also for eternity, and that’s really where the greatest reward has been.” Currently living on Indy’s northside, Wentz says he and his family have already grown to love Indianapolis. “We love it out here,” he says. “It’s got that small-town feel, but it’s definitely a bigger city that has everything you need from restaurants to family activities. There are so many things to do. I think the culture around here and the community atmosphere really fits me and my family perfectly, and we’re excited about it.” As for his inner outdoorsman, Wentz says he looks forward to exploring all of the nature Indiana has to offer as well. “The hunting, fishing and everything around in the countryside out here seems really exciting for me to dabble with, get out there and enjoy,” Wentz says. The Indianapolis Colts kick off their regular season on September 12 against the Seattle Seahawks at Lucas Oil Stadium. Center Grove pole vaulter Taylor Jarosinski nearly won State in 2019 as a sophomore in just her third year competing competitively in the sport. The senior
had to wait two long years for her last chance to win it all after last season was canceled due to the pandemic. Winning two Regional, Sectional, County and Conference titles, Jarosinski vaulted a school-record 13-feet to win the 2021 pole vault State Championship in her
“Being so close to the win in 2019 left me incredibly hungry. To win my senior year made the wait so worth it. I am so proud to have been a part of the CG team and program. To be able to cap off my high school career exactly how I wanted to was something that was so special and that I will never forget. It is, of course, bittersweet to know that it was my last time competing for CG and with my teammates and coaches I have been so close with for the last four years, but it was certainly the way that I had hoped to go out.” Being sidelined last season due to the pandemic did not derail Jarosinski’s vision of winning a state title. “I was truly the most motivated I have ever been upon hearing the news of the season being canceled,” Jarosinski says. “I had had a great indoor season and hit a PR (personal record) over

the summer that had me very excited to compete my junior season. When I heard the news, I did everything I could to keep this momentum despite not being able to train. I did workouts in my house and outside over lockdown and stayed motivated by challenging myself to make sure that when I could get back to jumping I would be ready to go after taking my own time to better myself. Once I could finally jump at club over the summer this motivation allowed me to come back and continue jumping and making progress in the way that I had hoped for.” Jarosinski credits all of her coaches and teammates for pushing her to improve every day. However, she says her biggest cheerleaders and supporters are her parents, Kate and Steve. “They always have supported me in every pursuit I have been interested in,” says the state champion pole vaulter. “They have been at every meet to support me, cheer me on, and show me love regardless of the outcome of the meet. They have never put pressure on me to clear a certain height or win a certain meet, but instead are there to be supportive and teach me that my value is not in me winning or losing, but my character and the work I put into my sport and life. They have made me who I am today and invested into me as a person, which I do believe carries over into track and the accomplishments I have had.” CGHS girls pole vault coach Alex Basham says Jarosinski is a true student of the sport. “She studies her jumps, her peers’ jumps, collegiate jumps and professional jumps,” Basham says. “She asks higher level questions to achieve a greater depth of knowledge. She reads articles, follows the best and dives into books. Taylor works hard before, during and after the season. She jumps in the off-season to maintain and push her skills.” She is not only an excellent student of pole vaulting, she also excels in 28 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2021 / TownePost.com

Not only was she able to achieve that, while setting a school record, she also finished high school being recognized as a National Merit Finalist, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and ranked 15th in her graduating class. She is a shining example of a student-athlete.” “It was special to see her finally achieve what she’s worked so hard for,” Basham
says. “You could see the pure joy and excitement in her face. She made it. She officially became the best after two years. I’m proud of her beyond the heights she has cleared. She is a poised, well spoken, dedicated, resilient, and smart young woman. As great as she is in pole vault, she is an even better person.”
