The most fun was planning for “Writer’s Holiday Treats.” We asked writers to submit their favorite holiday recipe to our Food Editor Julie Yates. Julie then picked three to feature in the article. (All of the submitted recipes are available on our website.)

“O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree” Our first Christmas away from family and friends was when we moved to Holland. By the time we got to Amsterdam, the delightful Dutch Sinterklaas celebration that we grew to love had already taken place, so we had to make our own holiday. Back home in Indiana, we always had live Christmas trees, so I got a live, small potted fir tree at the Flower Market, and we decorated it with red bows, tiny teddy bears, clip-on candles and red wooden apples. This Christmas, we will be starting another holiday tradition of cutting our own tree. We are going to take our great nephews, Max and Eli, to a Christmas tree farm. On the Indiana Christmas Tree Growers Association website, indianachristmastree.com, I found Trees from DeHart, a tree farm near Franklin. Steve DeHart and his family have been growing Christmas trees since 2004, and this year, your tree will come from a section planted in 2006. They let you hike out into the trees with a handsaw, and you select and cut your own tree. Then they will shake, drill and bale your tree to make it ready to bring home. The DeHarts grow Scotch pine, White pine and Douglas fir, or you can get a precut Indiana grown Canaan Fir. Their prices start at $35. In addition, a fresh tree lasts much longer and smells like Christmas!

Her interest in gardening intensified while living in Holland and was perfected with Master Gardener courses.
Trees from DeHart is open on weekends from 9:30 am until dark. They are located on Airport Road in Franklin. Take State Road 135 south to State Road 252 and turn east. At County Road 200 East (Airport Road), you will see their sign. There are so many stories about Christmas trees, but I like this one, The Parable Series: The Pine Tree Parable by Liz Curtis Higgs and plan to read it to my great nieces, Lindsey and Lauren.

Youth Connections | Erin Smith
T
he youth of our community represent the potential of our future. Often through no fault of their own, many experience tough economic, social and environmental challenges in our community. Youth Connections’ mission is to prevent juvenile delinquency by serving our youth through crisis intervention, community education and mentoring to foster positive relationships and selfworth. There are six primary programs that help accomplish these goals:
3. Jump Start Mentoring Program: This 32-week program meets during the school year and summer months, teaching youth about goal-setting and positive communication skills. 4. Custody Evaluations: These courtmandated assessments determine the needs of a child and evaluate each parent’s ability to adequately provide for those needs. 5. Divorce Education: ‘Families in Transition’ is a safe place for children and adults to begin the healing process associated with divorce and learn communication skills for coping with new relationship dynamics.
1. Safe Place Program: There are 111 designated sites in Johnson and Morgan counties where youth can go in a crisis 6. Children’s Visitation Center: A safe situation. Outreach to youth about this and neutral location for supervised program occurs through presentations visits between children and parents. at local schools, educating them about TRUE STORY the dangers of running away, drugs, Divorce often causes tremendous alcohol and bullying. 2. Host Homes: Pre-screened families offer temporary crisis placement for our youth ages 7-17.

pain and confusion for families. Tom Bingham, Executive Director for Youth Connections, shared how blessings can be found in the process of coping
with change and healing. He recalled involvement with a family where the 5-year-old had never really known his dad but was now being required to participate in court-ordered supervised visits with him. Bingham remembers, “As you can imagine, the first meeting was tense and awkward. We were so thankful for the new Children’s Visitation Center (CVC) that created an environment that felt more like home with books, a comfy couch, a cool fish tank and fun games.” He went on to explain that the child warmed up to his dad over several visits and looked forward to coming back to the CVC to spend time with him. The dad also learned effective communication and parenting skills while interacting with the staff during his time with Youth Connections. Eventually the visitations progressed to unsupervised, and what once seemed to be a strained relationship between father and child developed into a healthy bonding – nothing short of a miracle. Youth Connections’ involvement was a true blessing in the lives of that family and many more as they continue to serve the families in crisis of our community.

The Bells of Christmas SALVATION ARMY’S RED KETTLE CAMPAIGN
| Joyce Long For the past 122 Christmas seasons, bells rung by coat-clad folks have greeted shoppers outside of grocery and department stores. Begun by Joseph McAfee in San Francisco, the Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Campaign engages more than 25,000 workers and volunteers annually throughout the United States. Center Grove resident Brenda ShawGarza volunteers as a Salvation Army bell ringer, stationed most often at Kroger. A few years ago, she, accompanied by her two sons, donned a Santa hat while her youngest wore reindeer antlers. When a young mother with a toddler approached, the youngster’s eyes lit up. “Look, Mommy! It’s Santa and his goat!” A humbling moment occurred when Brenda worked downtown and was stationed in front of the former Indianapolis Star/News building across the street from Wheeler Mission. “I
was ringing in the freezing cold when a homeless man put in what change he had, looked at me and said, ‘May God bless you, honey.’ I said, ‘May God bless you, too, sir!” RECRUITING BELL RINGERS New Hope Church has actively recruited volunteers for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign since 2005. Terri Anderson organizes volunteers to fill hour shifts for two days. Having served on the Salvation Army’s Advisory Board, Terri has witnessed both the collection of funds and their distribution. “It’s nice to see it go full circle. I don’t feel like I’m giving at all. It’s more like I’m receiving when I volunteer.” Center Grove residents Norm and Phyllis Smith have also worked the annual Red Kettle Campaign organized by Rosedale United Methodist Church. While Norm remembers a donor once giving a hundred dollar bill, his fondest memories are of children emptying their pockets and teenagers searching wallets in order to give. “Young people want so badly to help. Rarely do you see them walk by.” COLLECTIONS STAY IN JOHNSON COUNTY Longtime volunteer Wayne Miller has seen many changes in the Salvation Army. His involvement began over 20 years ago with Greenwood Samaritan Services (GSS) once located in a house on Pearl Street. In 2001, the Salvation Army merged with GSS, continuing its food pantry. “Basically I ran the pantry while others did the bells,” said Wayne, who also helped install the hardware for the Red Kettle Campaign’s poles. “Money collected here stays in Johnson County. Over $90,000 was collected.” Located at 325 Market

Plaza, the Salvation Army’s food pantry is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:30-4 pm. Wayne is impressed with the number of pantry volunteers who serve faithfully, including Kris Kyle, Sharron Kurz and Christina Kipper. Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign is the longest fundraiser of its kind, in 2010 serving 30 million people. This year’s goal is $90,000. | Amanda Ennis “Blessed” and “cancer” — these aren’t two words most people would combine. To 37-year-old Greenwood resident Amy Ottney, it’s challenging to speak of her journey with cancer any other way. She usually refers to her disease as simply her “blessed cancer.” In August 2011, just before her 35th birthday, Amy found a lump in her right breast. Within weeks, she received her diagnosis, an aggressive form of breast cancer. “I call September my bobblehead month,” she says. “There was so much news that washed over me. All I could

do was just nod my head, not really understanding what our family would go through.” Amy and her husband, Steven, have three children: Zach, 7; Grace, 5; and Lexy, 3. Amy found herself facing an uncertain future. “Are you going to die?” asked Grace. Amy did not know. What she did know was the next year would include a grueling treatment that consisted of chemotherapy, radiation and two surgeries. Greater was her awareness that her faith in God would see her through the difficult days ahead and help her choose a joyful heart.
“It’s the Baldies!” “I really don’t ever remember questioning, ‘Why me?’ I wanted to give God the glory, no matter how many days I had left.” She believes having joy in the midst of trying circumstances pointed others to God. She says she experienced joy and comfort through her trial by helping others. Some would find ministering to others during one’s own trials impossible, but Amy found it comforting. In helping, she found joy and spread joy. As she herself struggled with losing her hair, she knew it would be difficult for her kids to accept. Amy and Steven planned a “Goodbye Mommy’s Hair Party!” With kids, balloons, treats and fun glasses, the family was ready to celebrate Amy’s new “do.” At the party, they shaved Amy’s head and took pictures. After the final shave, there was much laughter when they compared her head to her husband, Steven’s, who is also bald. “Aww, look! It’s the baldies!” joked Zach. Throughout her cancer, Amy supported others who were battling cancer. Just five months into her own treatment, she came alongside her 31-year-old cousin who was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. “To my cousin and others, I was a sounding board, a shoulder to cry on. I was happy for her to join my ‘Shiny Happy People Club!’
I went to appointments with her and just loved her.” “Day to day, I could laugh and encourage others with the gift of joy because of my faith in God and time spent in His Word.” Amy planned her chemo treatments around her weekly Tuesday morning Bible study, Bible Study Fellowship. Her chemotherapy was Tuesday afternoons, enabling her to receive encouragement before her treatment.

own health issues. When watching her, it’s hard for her joy not to be contagious!”
Two years before Amy’s diagnosis, her husband, Steven, was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). During the time of Amy’s cancer treatment, Steven’s doctors exhausted all treatment options and prepared him for the possibility of a lung transplant. Today, Steven, owner of ‘Comics Are Cool’ and a U-Haul location in Center Grove, still struggles with symptoms of COPD, although his condition has improved without a transplant.
Joy Brings Hope “Amy’s joy gave me hope," Steven says. "Her cancer altered my viewpoint of my

Today Amy is a two-year cancer survivor. She has encouraged many with a story of faith and survival. Amy and Steven have shared their journey in their local church, Stones Crossing Church. She has counseled newly diagnosed cancer patients referred through her doctor’s office. At the Pink Ribbon Connection’s Breast Cancer Survivor Fashion Show, she shared her story and walked the runway. “We were blessed as our family, friends and church family covered us with prayers, cards, meals, a bedroom makeover and a vacation. What a joy to experience God’s love while suffering with a smile,” says Amy.
“This journey helped our family have a deeper awareness of God’s goodness and presence in our lives. Why do I call this my ‘blessed cancer’? Because I can’t look back on this journey without seeing God’s blessing over my family and me at every turn. I truly saw God at work.” cg Amanda and her husband, Dave, have lived in the Center Grove area since 2001. She is a mom to three elementary-age kids, Chase, Jill and Kara. For the past seven years, Amanda has participated in and served in Bible Study Fellowship. She recently began working at Crabapple Creek Country Day School.
At the time of her cancer, Steven worked for his dad at Greene’s Auto in Center Grove. “Steven’s parents told him to take care of me and our family. They gave him lots of time off and job flexibility so he could,” Amy said.

A
re you looking for a fun and festive holiday activity to do with family or friends of any age? You might consider a road trip to the Martinsville Candy Kitchen. This quaint candy kitchen tantalizes the senses in the month of December with their signature holiday item: warm hand-pulled candy canes. Owners John and Pam Badger bought the store in 2004. The Badgers were at a historic preservation meeting when they heard the kitchen was going to close due to the previous owner’s age and no perspective buyers. “We didn’t have any business experience,” John recalled. “But my wife and I didn’t want to see our hometown candy shop closed either.” A Greek immigrant, Jimmy Zapapas, founded the candy kitchen in 1919. To this day, John and Pam still use Zapapas’ original gas stove, copper pot, marble slab and metal hook in the creation of their candy canes. According to Pam, the entire process, from beginning to end, takes approximately three hours, producing batches anywhere from 150 to 300 canes at a time. They offer 6”, 9” and 12” canes, along with ¼-pound bags of pieces. In recent years, the Badgers have also included other designs such as candy cane ribbons and blue and white horseshoes for the Colts fan in the group. Those placing special orders may request one of the kitchen’s 17 flavors.

Their traditional flavors include such top sellers as peppermint or cinnamon, while a more exotic choice of flavors might be clove, horehound or cappuccino. In 2012, the candy kitchen sold 38,100 candy canes. “I suspect our numbers will be higher than that this year.” Visitors in December have a hard time deciding which is more exciting, watching the owners make the scrumptious treat or eating it. What if you have a question while the Badgers are making the canes? Just holler the question out. John is more than happy to answer any questions. Because orders are shipped daily to places like New York, Arizona, Italy, Haiti and Afghanistan, the Badgers can be seen making their candy canes most every day in December. If you would like a personal viewing for your family or group, John suggests you call ahead for details. “We make canes at all hours on Saturdays and Sundays, plus in the evenings during the week.” For those customers desiring a different sweet, the Martinsville Candy Kitchen carries 29 varieties of ice cream, along with handmade chocolates and fudge. | Frieda Dowler Who wouldn’t love to travel to the other side of the globe in search of spiritual balance like Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love? However, friends and I decided we could find that kind of balance closer to home. We set out to indulge our souls by eating great food in local establishments, make spiritual connections in sacred places and exercise our bodies while bicycling on the Indiana trail system. Exotic places may entice, but finding peace for us means getting away with friends or family in budget-friendly snippets and finding special places in our own state. Springtime took us to Southwest Indiana for a three-day weekend on a $300 budget, but with end-of-summer jammed schedules, we preferred three individual days closer to home in Central Indiana.
DAY 1: Wednesday at City Market Vendors lining the streets with displays of colorful late summer harvest greeted us upon arrival for the Indiana Landmarks limited tour of the catacombs. Descending under Whistler Plaza, we examined eerie ruins of
structural brick arches, the remains of Tomlinson Hall that burned in 1958. The city hopes for a future purpose, but so far, it only conjures up tales of a ghostly nature. We hadn’t anticipated this kind of spiritual connection, but it did cause us to pray! Old world charm at The Rathskeller is reminiscent of a quaint European inn, making our schnitzel and sauerkraut lunches seem worlds away. A slow stroll rather than bicycling Massachusetts Avenue was exercise enough in 95 degree humidity. At Mass Ave Toys, we playfully indulged our inner child, remembering when “we had one of those.”
DAY 2: Bicycling Fall Creek Greenway Starting at Binford Boulevard this cool Saturday, we traveled seven miles northeast along the creek on a wide paved trail. Nature vignettes with black-eyed Susan flower backdrops greeted us as we bicycled. Lunch at The Illinois Street Food Emporium under umbrella tables lining the sidewalk allowed for pleasantries with passersby while indulging in familiar yet adventurous concoctions.

n December 19, 1777, ragged and poorly supplied Rebel troops stumbled into Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Under the direction of General George Washington, these 12,000 men hunkered down for the winter and waited for spring when the battle would resume with the British. This December, the local Alexander Hamilton chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) selected this historical event to be the focus of their tree displayed at the Dec-A-Tree competition at the Johnson County Museum of History. While there was no actual battle at Christmastime in Valley Forge, there is still much to celebrate regarding this event; during this winter known as the “Winter of Red Snow,” the Rebel soldiers faced much hardship, but they also transformed themselves into an actual army. DESIGNED HUNDREDS OF TREES To design and implement this year’s submission to the DecA-Tree competition, the DAR has chosen Suzie Hollinger. Hollinger is a long-time resident of Center Grove, and as an interior decorator for over 25 years, she has panache for Christmas trees. “I have designed hundreds of Christmas trees, and no two have ever been the same. To help my trees tell their story, I like them to display unusual items…different from just traditional ornaments. I made many of the ornaments for this tree by taking historical quotes and mounting them onto old cedar and vintage fabrics, accented with quill feather pens,” she said. Making her own decorations is one of the characteristics that keep people coming back to Suzie year after year for their Christmas and everyday décor. For this particular tree, Suzie incorporated maps, quotes and Bible verses interspersed among the lanterns, bugles and other period pieces. One of the things that most inspired Suzie in the Valley Forge tree was “George Washington’s prayers that were documented from this challenging time. I also made a replica of George Washington’s prayer journal that includes his prayers from the time. His faith and Christianity were immensely important to him and can remind us of the reason for the Christmas season…amidst adversity or joy. People of all religions will be inspired by the strength of his faith,” she said.

NON-CONVENTIONAL TOPPER Signatures of Suzie’s trees are often the tree toppers that incorporate the client’s desired theme. For the Christmas at Valley Forge tree, Suzie once again incorporated the theme of the time period into the topper. Instead of using a more traditional star or angel, she used a vintage Betsy Ross flag combined with a saber. While the use of a weapon is clearly not a traditional tree topper, Suzie felt that it was a demonstration of this Bible verse that further epitomizes Washington’s stalwart faith: There is a time to love. And there’s a time to hate. There is a time for war. And there’s a time for peace. - Ecclesiastes 3:8
Suzie went on to explain the use of a weapon on a Christmas tree: “I’m so devout on remembering that our freedom isn’t free. [This project] triggered all those memories of what our ancestors did for us and what our current military does for us now.” In addition, it is a reminder to visitors to the Johnson County Museum of History’s display that even at Christmas, many troops are away from their families – both during the Christmas at Valley Forge and now. In addition to this project for the DAR, Suzie is busy decorating trees for clients’ homes. “I can use their family ornaments or design their home to look just like they see in the magazines. Smaller or thin trees can even be designed to be stored with all the decorations in place and then simply unwrapped and put in place from year to year,” said Hollinger. She went on to explain, “Many older children don’t care to participate in the decorating ‘event’ anymore. It is even difficult for the parents to find time to put it all together early enough to really enjoy it. Then putting it away is another time-consuming project. That is why we come in, decorate for them, put the boxes away and have Christmas music playing by the time they get home from work. People love to enjoy their Christmas decorations. CG Embraces the Holidays CG SCHOOL EVENTS
| Tonja Talley Center Grove residents embrace December’s holiday traditions. The area becomes lit from within with goodwill, memorable activities and a few Christmas lights. The White River Township Fire Department’s annual Christmas Angels program started the season of goodwill in our area November 26. “It is one small way for the fire department to support those within the community,” Fire Chief Jeremy Pell said. The program is designed to make the holidays brighter for Johnson County children in need, ranging in age from newborn to 17. “In the Center Grove community, most people have countless blessings to be thankful for. Unfortunately, many in our community will enter the Christmas season without even their basic needs being met,” said Pell. This year, the firefighters will serve as hosts, waiters and bus boys at two local restaurants in White River Township. They invite Center Grove residents to come with hungry stomachs to assist with this worthwhile program. The events are as follows: Saturday, December 7 Tuesday, December 10 12-6 pm 5-8 pm Culver’s Texas Roadhouse 320 State Road 135 270 S. Marlin Dr. According to Life Safety Officer Craig Zollars, the department encourages anyone wanting to share in the Christmas Angels efforts to call the headquarters at 317-888-8337 for additional information. “Through Friday, December 15, a list of all the children needing assistance will be available at the headquarters [850 S. November 2013 saw a Greenwood dining icon celebrate landmark success. “The 25th anniversary is bittersweet,” admits Ginny Byrd, owner and co-founder of Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria and Banquet Center. Ginny and her late husband, Jonathan Byrd Sr., opened the combined facility November 7, 1988. They had sold multiple Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises to fulfill Jonathan’s lifelong dream of opening a family-flavored cafeteria. “From the Monday morning we opened that door, it was crazy. There weren’t a lot of places to eat in Greenwood then.” How do you find enough recipes to fill an 88-foot cafeteria line with 200 food items daily? “We ran a test kitchen for a year. We ate fried chicken for 30 days. I thought we were going to grow feathers and lay eggs!” Their popular meatloaf “was Holly Weber’s mom’s recipe, and she still works here.” The workload was so intense, Ginny doesn’t remember that first Christmas, but she does recall another 1988 December date. “We held the first gospel sing on New Year’s Eve.” It became a favorite annual gathering for 21 years. Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria became known for hosting gospel music events. “Bill Gaither came here every August for 13 years.” In 1995, the Byrds were considering building a home in Phoenix, Arizona. Always brimming with ideas, he said, “Why don’t we just build a hotel?” “Sure,” replied Ginny. “Go ahead.” Hard work became harder when Ginny witnessed Jonathan experience
a paralyzing stroke on August 30, 2004, five days after heart surgery. Within weeks, he deteriorated and slipped into a coma for three weeks. Oldest son Jonathan Jr. ran the family businesses while his father regained consciousness. Physically incapacitated and no longer able to talk, Jonathan Sr. never returned to the work he loved. He did return, though, to a new home that Ginny had built in Greenwood during his extended time in rehab. He came home in January 2006 to adjust to life in a wheelchair. “We had our ways of communicating,” says Ginny. In November 2008, still weak but boldly encouraged by Ginny, Jonathan Sr. joined the 20th anniversary celebration of the cafeteria, one of his many realized dreams. August 2009 arrived, and 56-year-old Jonathan Byrd Sr. passed into eternity. After spending years caring for her husband, Ginny returned to work the businesses. By then, those included five hotels in Phoenix, one hotel in Utah, the Greenwood cafeteria and the catering business. “Grief is an interesting trip,” observes Ginny. When she gets down, she reads a psalm from the Bible to move her mind off sad thoughts. “God’s ways are higher than ours. I had to remind myself of that. | Julie Yates The Christmas season is that time of the year when we make special seasonal recipes for loved ones to enjoy. Often there are longstanding memories behind them, but sometimes the recipe has come to a family fairly recently, and modern traditions are being made. A short while ago, several of the writers of Center Grove Community Newsletter (CGCN) got together and shared their special holiday dishes with each other. Generously, they agreed to provide the following delicious recipes to the wonderful readers of CGCN. cg
Kristen Parker, Katelyn Bausman and Joyce Long submitted the three winning recipes.
Caramel Bundt Rolls - 24 frozen yeast rolls - 2 (3 oz.) packages of dry butter pecan or butterscotch pudding mix (not instant) - 1 c. margarine or butter - 1 c. brown sugar - 2 t. cinnamon - ½ c. chopped pecans Butter or oil Bundt pan. Layer the 24 frozen rolls in pan. Sprinkle dry pudding over rolls. Melt margarine or butter in a pan with brown sugar, cinnamon and pecans. Pour over pudding and rolls. Set out on counter to thaw or in refrigerator overnight. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Invert caramel rolls onto plate while they’re still hot. Joyce’s family has enjoyed these “Sticky Buns” every Christmas morning since 1988. Since the family attends 11 pm Christmas Eve services, this recipe works well. She assembles it before church and then refrigerates it upon returning home. On Christmas morning, it bakes while presents are being opened, and it’s ready by the time the last gift is unwrapped.

Peanut Butter Butterscotch Haystacks - 1 c. butterscotch chips - ½ c. peanut butter - ½ c. salted peanuts - 2 c. Chow Mein noodles Place butterscotch chips and peanut butter in a bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave on 50% power for 3 minutes until mixable. Blend well and stir in peanuts and noodles. Drop by spoonfuls onto wax paper. Cool until set. Whimsical and fun for children to assemble, Editor Katelyn Bausman has been making these “Haystack” cookies since she was in second grade. Her class made them as part of care packages sent to troops during Operation Desert Storm. Easy but a real crowd pleaser, guests can opt for just one or several of these bite-sized treats. Salted Caramel Pretzel Bark - 2 sticks of butter - 1 c. light brown sugar - 1 regular bag of pretzels - 12 oz. bag of chocolate chips - Sea salt Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a large bar pan with parchment paper and cover it with pretzels. Melt butter over medium-low heat. Add the brown sugar. Stir occasionally over medium low heat for 3-5 minutes until it turns caramel-brown. Pour over pretzels and use spatula to spread it out if needed. Bake the sheet for five minutes. Remove sheet from the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over mixture. Return pan to the oven for about 45 seconds. Remove from oven and use a spatula to evenly spread chocolate over the top. Then sprinkle with sea salt and refrigerate for a minimum of 1 hour. Kristen Parker’s family enjoys this recipe for “Pretzel Bark” not only at Christmas time but all year long. CGHS Soup Dinner Benefits Riley Hospital for Children | Barbara Augsdorfer What are you doing on the evening of December 20? Chances are there will be a fresh blanket of snow on the ground (Yeah!), the malls will be jammed with holiday shoppers, the kids will be starting their winter break and there will be a few high school basketball games on the schedule. If you go to Center Grove High School before the game against Whiteland, you can sample a variety of soups at the sixth annual “Riley Soup Dinner” to benefit Riley Hospital for Children – all organized and hosted by the student government students at CGHS – and all for a donation of $5. (Remember that snow on the ground? A bowl of hot soup sounds sooo good.) How it works: Families of student government members are asked to bring a crockpot full of their favorite soup. “We’ve had chicken tortilla, cheddar broccoli, chicken noodle, vegetable…all kinds,” says one of the tri-chairs, senior Chapman Johnson. “We get other items for the dinner donated, such as bread from Texas Roadhouse, cookies from McDonald’s and sweet tea from McAlister’s,” Johnson added.

To make the evening more personal, Johnson explains, “We have a subcommittee that goes to each class and asks students if they’ve been patients at Riley. Students share their stories and the experience they had at the hospital and we display these at the dinner.” Once the money is raised for the hospital, it’s usually given to the Cure Guild for them to determine how it will best serve the young patients such as new toys. Clute added, “Most of the money donated to Riley goes to help the hospital turn no patient away.”
Other members of the committee are senior Lauren Clute, junior Janesh Karnati and faculty advisors Lindsay Hardin and Lindsey Bentz. Johnson said that most people bring homemade soup, but it doesn’t have to be made from scratch – store-bought soup is okay. The dinner starts at 6 pm, and the game tips off at 7 pm. Students (and some alumni) also provide entertainment during the dinner. It’s all for a really great cause. Last year, the event raised $835 for Riley Hospital for Children. “A snowstorm last year impacted attendance. We have made more than $1,000 in the past,” says Clute.
This will be the sixth year for the Riley Soup Dinner, but CGHS students have been active raising money for Riley for several years before the first event in 2008. This year’s funds will be donated in memory of Tyler Genneken, the Center Grove Middle School student who lost his battle with bone cancer in 2009. cg Barbara Augsdorfer is a graduate of California Lutheran University with more than 20 years of writing and editing experience in the publishing industry.
