Owner Greg Lymberopoulos
LIVRITE FITNESS CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING OF NEW FISHERS LOCATION Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Eli Beaverson
As a decades-long veteran of the fitness facility industry, Greg Lymberopoulos has come to know the business quite well. Lymberopoulos first entered the industry in the early 1980s in the St. Louis metropolitan area and by 1987 had opened a chain of five full-service fitness clubs that he says ranked 299th in Inc. magazine’s list of fastest-growing companies that year.
“Coming up I was a baseball fanatic, and that’s all I knew starting out - I loved competition and the challenges that come with that,” says Lymberopoulos, who played baseball in high school and college. “So I was in that athletic world, and I thought I could do well running clubs and do what it takes to make them work well. Back in the 1980s, I could see that fullservice clubs were going to be big, instead of just racquetball clubs and things.”
he purchased a failing racquetball club, eventually relocating his headquarters to Indy under the LivRite Fitness moniker. He sold several of his St. Louis clubs and eventually all of his LivRite locations in 2000, keeping the rights to the LivRite name— a decision that would come in handy several years later when he bought several failing clubs in Indiana and Illinois and brought back the LivRite brand.
Lymberopoulos subsequently entered the Indianapolis fitness club market when

four Indiana gym locations including Anderson, Noblesville, Fishers and a spot in Indy near East 62nd Street and Binford Boulevard, as well as a location in Fairview Heights, Illinois. Lymberopoulos says his Christian faith has been a primary focus in all of his personal and professional endeavors. “I’ve always felt the Lord’s call and tried to do whatever it took to obey it and let it lead my work ethic and responsibilities,” he says. Five years ago, LivRite Fitness Noblesville was opened as a 24hour gym, with a full suite of cardio and aerobic equipment, tanning beds and hydromassage equipment and group classes. Three years later Lymberopoulos purchased the land where the new Fishers location now sits, and in September of 2018, he began construction on the LivRite Fishers facility, which spans two floors and about 40,000 square feet. The facility officially opened in December of 2019, and it’s a full-service gym indeed. You’ll find more than 40 cardio machines, racks upon racks of free weights, a basketball and volleyball court, and even a heated, 86-degree indoor swimming pool for those who’d like to get their laps in throughout the cold months. Each individual who signs up for a LivRite membership gets a complimentary fitness assessment with one of the gym’s certified personal trainers, which Lymberopoulos says helps members begin their fitness journey at the proper starting point. “You never want to start out overworking yourself, and it’s a good idea to get that assessment to determine your capabilities and maybe your limitations,” says Lymberopoulos, who has five children with his wife Deena. “It’s really a good idea for someone with an old injury or who’s had a long lapse in any kind of workout system, whether that’s by themselves or with group classes.”
And there’s no shortage of group classes for those who prefer the extra boost of having an instructor for some guidance - choose from water aerobics, basketball leagues, barre classes, as well as one-on-one personal training for customized fitness programs. LivRite also offers childcare services for parents and guardians whose schedule might preclude other daycare options, and an onsite cafe offers food and drinks for pre or postworkout nourishment. “When we were looking at the layout of the building, we wanted to capitalize on the outdoor space and have a flat turf surface for when it’s nice out. Then we decided to include a 30-yard sprint track leading to the ramp at the end,” Kyle says. “Hill training is a great workout, and a lot of athletes do it. You can also do pushups and stuff like that on it too.”

The new facility also houses a few additional unique features. There’s a conference room on the second level available for private meetings, corporate events or birthday parties. Greg and Kyle also decided to install an artificial turf ramp at the back of the building, which Kyle says provides a unique workout challenge for members.

POPULAR FORD’S GARAGE RESTAURANT OPENS FIRST INDIANA LOCATION AT HAMILTON TOWN CENTER Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
An auto-themed restaurant concept located in Central Indiana, home of the Indy 500? Makes sense. Ford’s Garage, a Florida-based restaurant chain with 12 stores in the Sunshine State and one in Dearborn, Michigan, is officially
adding a location in Indy to its lineup, and founder Mike McGuigan says the decision was a no-brainer.
was really a matter of time before we started in the midwest states rather than breaking into the east or west coasts.”
“As we continue to expand out of Florida, and being a tourist destination on the west coast of Florida, a large portion of our patrons and tourists are snowbirds and come from the midwest, so there’s been a built-in brand awareness,” McGuigan explains. “So it
Indy’s association with auto and racing culture played an additional role in McGuigan’s decision, and the Noblesville location, in the space previously occupied by Mo’s Irish Pub in Hamilton Town Center, features decor that ties into that culture.
JANUARY 2020
“When you combine all these factors, Indianapolis was a first choice outside of Florida to build a presence other than our Dearborn, Michigan, restaurant,” say McGuigan, who first launched the Ford’s Garage concept in downtown Fort Myers — less than one mile from the former winter residence of Henry Ford himself — in 2012, and began scouting locations outside of Florida two years ago. The eatery, like all of its sister stores, is a casual, all-ages establishment with a menu full of classic American fare like burgers, wings and salads, as well as craft beer, wine and cocktails. The visual aesthetic in each Ford’s Garage is a throwback to prohibition-era taverns and 1920s service stations, with gas pumps, memorabilia and actual Ford vehicles adorning the bar and dining areas. “We’re very burger-centric but almost anyone can find something to satisfy them on the menu,” says Sam Tancredi, Indianapolis operating partner with Ford’s Garage. “For the fish lovers, we sell a blackened salmon and two tuna dishes that are big sellers, and there are chicken tenders and a great French onion soup.” Several burgers on the menu will be named after notable former and current Hoosiers and iconic figures associated with the city and state, including former Indiana Pacer Reggie Miller, former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, as well as legendary auto racing drivers and Indy 500 winners A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti. “We’re so excited for the community here to experience the restaurant,” Tancredi says. “We have two Ford Model A cars inside the building, one over the bar and one in the side dining room. There’s an old Ford truck out on the front patio that customers can also experience, and they can actually eat on the truck bed. It’s really a fun concept - kids love it, and car buffs can appreciate it.” The Ford’s team decided to tear down several walls and a refrigeration space

in the former Mo’s Irish Pub bar area in order to create a more open floor plan in the approximately 7,100-square-foot building. Five patio doors will open onto 1,200 feet of outdoor patio space for the spring and summer months. Tancredi says local support behind the restaurant has been largely positive since Ford’s Garage leaders announced plans to open the northside restaurant. “When we made the announcement we were surprised how many people here had heard about us,” Tancredi says. “A lot of people here have been down to Fort Myers at the original downtown location or the other ones in Florida.”

McGuigan has plans to open at least two more Ford’s Garage locations in Indiana over the next few years. “I’ve always been a theme guy and always admired Walt Disney, and I think to be successful you have to offer an experience beyond just a good meal since you can get that at home,” he says. “We like to hit the service, the food and the atmosphere, and also try to hit the customers’ senses — sight, sound and smell — to keep them coming back.” Ford’s Garage is located at 13193 Levinson Lane #100 at Hamilton Town Center in Noblesville. POPULAR BREAKFAST & LUNCH RESTAURANT OPENS SECOND LOCATION AT THE YARD AT FISHERS DISTRICT Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
Michelle Sirum, manager at Rize breakfast, brunch and lunch restaurant in Fishers, says the opening of the establishment in November was the result of more that just a growing customer following - it was nearly a necessity. “Our first Rize location at the Ironworks hotel is quite smaller than our new Fishers location, and we didn’t anticipate it being
the hit that it’s become,” she says. “That location services the hotel with breakfast and lunch room service, so between that and the 60 or so seats we have there, it was time for a second place to meet the continuing demand.”
Rize restaurant, with a capacity of about 140 inside as well as a 30-seat, dog-friendly patio during the warmer months.
“We really think the location in Fishers is great, with the apartments nearby where people can walk right over with their Rize Ironworks opened back in the fall of dog,” Sirum says. “It’s a great option for 2017, and Sirum says the eatery was an people who like the concept but are maybe immediate success with wait times of nearly hesitant because of the way the wait times two hours on weekends. The new location at can be at Ironworks.” The Yard at Fishers District, near Ikea, more than doubles the capacity of the original Rize is owned by Indy-based Cunningham JANUARY 2020
Restaurant Group (CRG), which operates more than 30 eateries in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky including BRU Burger, Mesh, Stone Creek Dining Company Union 50, Vida and others. “It’s a great meeting spot for a number of demographics, whether it’s business meetings, families or people just out and about,” says Carissa Newton, CRG marketing director. Sirum says the restaurant’s focus on fresh dishes and unique, slightly offbeat ingredient combos has contributed to its ongoing popularity. “I think it’s really our farm-to-table aspect that sets us apart too,” adds Sirum, who has been with CRG for two years. “And we combine that with our local sourcing — most of what we get is from farmers here in Indiana. Sometimes that’s not doable, but we do it as much as we can. Also, CRG has its own spot where we do our own herbs for the CRG restaurants.” Rize’s local purveyors include Miller Amish Country Poultry, Tulip Tree Creamery, Eisele’s Honey, Smoking Goose, Blue Dog Bakery, Silverthorn Farms and more. The Rize brunch menu consists of a few traditional favorites and some unique creations like the Egg Tart (egg custard, Gruyere, spinach, hibiscus mustard, pickled onion and a seasonal roasted veggie) and the Strata (Yukon gold potatoes, egg custard, tomato jam, mushroom, pesto and ham). You’ll also find breakfast bowls, sandwiches, salads, smoothies and an open-face toast menu with selections like the BLT, featuring thick-cut bacon, romaine, tomato and Thai basil vinaigrette, and the Cold-Smoked Salmon, which comes with garlic-caper cream cheese, pickled onion and tomato. “A lot of the dishes are very fresh and very light in nature,” says Newton, adding that Rize Fishers plans to offer catering options for private events and parties. “One benefit of our concept is that you can order anything off the menu at any time during the day. So you can order lunch at early breakfast time, or brunch during lunchtime.
We think that flexibility, within the concept of a unique menu that isn’t a run-of-the-mill chain restaurant, is very nice. People get tired of the same old restaurants everywhere they go.”

According to Sirum, a recent customer brunch fave is the Miller Farm Chicken Hash, which comes with a sunny-side-up herbed duck egg, tomato-fennel gravy, potatoes, beech mushrooms and basil pesto. Rize Fishers also offers cinnamon rolls, muffins and other pastry items from its sister business Croûte Baking Company, which opened as a to-go bakery concept earlier this year on North Meridian Street. Croûte also houses CRG’s commissary bakery and tasting kitchen. Since the November 11 grand opening, Sirum says Rize Fishers has seen a steady growth in customer attendance, which she feels confident will continue through winter. “We’re definitely picking up in volume,” she says. “There’s been lots of good feedback from locals, especially those who’ve been to the Ironworks and are excited to have a location here in their neighborhood. We’re hearing a lot of people saying, ‘It’s about time.’ We’re glad to finally be here in Fishers.” Rize is located at 9705 Fishers District Drive, Suite 760, in Fishers. NICER NEIGHBORHOODS FISHERS VIBRANT NEIGHBORHOOD MATCHING GRANT PROGRAM ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS UNTIL JANUARY 31 Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided
From lighting replacements to tree plantings, many Fishers neighborhoods are beautified every year via the city’s vibrant neighborhood matching grant program. “The purpose of the grant is to help with exterior beautification and enhancement projects,” says Megan Schaefer, a planner with the City of Fishers. “[We try to] help with funding for neighborhoods that are older and maybe need a little bit more help. We want to incentivize improvements for older neighborhoods so that they continue looking just as good as the new subdivisions that go in.” Applications for the 2020 vibrant neighborhood matching grants are open from now through Jan. 31. Both individuals and HOA’s are encouraged to apply for up to $5,000 of funding. For the 2020 cycle, funding for the program was increased to $75,000, which marks a $20,000 increase from 2019.
It’s also worth noting that the 2020 vibrant neighborhood matching grant program combines the former tree and neighborhood matching grant programs, which had been separate for years. With this being said, both landscape and hardscape projects are eligible for consideration in the 2020 vibrant neighborhood matching grant program.
“We typically prioritize neighborhoods that are 10 years or older and also applicants who have not received funding from one of our former grant programs in the past,” she says.
“Previously, we had been administering the neighborhood matching grant for 19 years and the tree matching grant for eight years,” Schaefer says. “As we were administering those programs, we found that they essentially funded the same types of projects — it was neighborhoods applying for beautification projects such as sign upgrades or landscaping upgrades. So we thought, ‘Why don’t we just combine both of these programs into one? That will cut down on the time and cost that it takes to administer them.’”
“Let’s say the entrance to your subdivision is off of 116th Street,” Schaefer says. “Not only will that benefit the residents in your neighborhood, but it will also benefit everyone driving by it everyday.”
With the new vibrant neighborhood matching grants, Schaefer explains some of the major factors that are being taken into consideration. JANUARY 2020
Past that, the committee also considers how many people will be impacted by the project.
Last year, the Lantern Pines neighborhood (located just north of 96th Street on Lantern Road) received a neighborhood matching grant to help fund lighting improvements at the neighborhood’s entrance. “It was a beautification piece but then it also enhanced the security of our little neighborhood here that we’ve been so privileged to have for the last 25 years,” says Drew Boyd, president of the Lantern Pines Property Owners Association.
Now upon driving into his Lantern Pines neighborhood, Boyd is filled with an added sense of comfort.
soccer fields from 106th Street, as 12 inches of top soil and 3-foot high bushes were removed from the center island.”
“Every time I drive into the neighborhood at night now, everything is really lit up,” Boyd says. “The lighting just really made a big impact on the welcoming feel of the neighborhood.”
When it comes to the application process for 2020, individuals and HOA’s must submit all information by the Jan. 31 deadline. From there, applicants will be notified in the spring on whether they received the grant or not.
For the Bradford Ridge and Bradford Knoll neighborhoods (located at the intersection of 106th Street and Cumberland Road), it was a similar story, as the Bradford Ridge/ Knoll HOA recently used a matching grant from the city to make entrance updates. “The Fishers city matching grant allowed us to pool our reserves together with the city to remove old 25-year fencing and replace dead and overgrown bushes with new, hardy perennials,” says Bradford Ridge/Knoll HOA treasurer Rich Moorlach. “Sight lines were also significantly improved for shared HOA/city entrances to Cumberland Park
“The neighborhood then has until Nov. 1, 2020 to install or do the work for whatever their improvement is,” Schaefer says. “From there, they have to provide us pictures of project completion and proof of payment, and we will reimburse them for the costs that we granted.” All in all, Boyd says the City of Fishers makes the process simple and straightforward for applicants. “The process was a little bit intimidating at first, just because it was something
new,” Boyd says. “But once I read through the instructions and put the paperwork together, it was pretty turnkey.” At the end of the day, he believes that nicer neighborhoods make the City of Fishers a better place to live, work and play. “When we have nicer neighborhoods, it helps the whole town of Fishers continue to look good and become a place where people want to come and live,” Boyd says. For more information on how you or your HOA can apply for a vibrant neighborhood matching grant, be sure to visit fishers. in.us/1076/Matching-Grants. The application process remains open from now through Jan. 31.

MADDOX’S MISSION LO C A L B OY W O R K S Y E A R - R O U N D TO M A K E & D I ST R I B U T E B L E S S I N G B AG S TO H O M E L E S S Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Michael Durr
Born with a life-threatening and often fatal genetic condition, Maddox O’Connor became intimately familiar with Riley Hospital from day one. Around age 6, he began to notice the homeless man that was sitting outside the hospital’s doors each time he went for his weekly appointment. He asked his mom, Shawn, who the man was, and she provided a gentle response. “Sometimes in life, bad things happen to good people,” she said. The family knew this fact all too well, though they never let Maddox’s frightening diagnosis define him.
“When you’re in Maddox’s situation, you have two choices,” Shawn says. “You can lie down and wait to die or rise above it, see what God has for you, and make the best of it. Maddox has always wanted to make something good out of every situation.” Once he was old enough to read the words scrawled across the torn square of the homeless man’s cardboard box, an advocate was born. One day following his weekly appointment, Maddox told his mom, “I didn’t eat my lunch today. Can we give the hungry man my sandwich?” After that, each week he asked his mother, “Is today a Riley day?” If it was, he’d march atFishers.com / JANUARY 2020 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 25
into the kitchen to make an extra lunch. One Friday as they were entering Riley, Maddox spotted two disheveled people standing near the doorway. Shawn noticed the distress covering her son’s face. “I understand what those men are feeling, Mommy,” he stated softly. “I understand what it’s like to live in a world that I never asked to live in. They need to know that somebody prays for them even when they can’t see it.” He was adamant that they do more so he suggested they create blessing bags filled with snacks and hygiene products and distribute them to the homeless community
around Indianapolis. Maddox’s Mission, however, supplies more than nutrients and necessities. Maddox feeds souls by including personal messages in each bag that say things like, “Your life is important to Jesus,” “God created you because He loves you,” “You are special,” and “Your life matters.” They began by collecting donations from family and neighbors. Shawn also created a “Maddox’s Mission” Facebook page so folks may donate if they so desire. They’ve received donations from across the country — Texas, Alaska, Florida, Alabama and Hawaii. The positive response has only spurred Maddox’s desire to do more. “Let’s put together a million blessing bags!” he exclaimed. Shawn proposed a more realistic number — 300. The pair finally settled on a goal of assembling 500 bags every three months, which they then take to various homeless shelters in downtown Indy. He delivers the bags to each person because he believes the personal connection is the key component of the process. “He wants to physically hand out these bags so he can interact with people because, to him, if you leave the bags, it’s like a business transaction,” Shawn says. “He wants them to hear, ‘I care about you. I love you. I’m praying for you.’” In the winter, each drawstring bag includes hats, gloves and scarves. In the summer, the bags are filled with sunscreen, lip balm and Gatorade. “A lot of homeless people not only struggle with hydration but also blood sugar issues because they’re not eating on a regular basis,” says Shawn, who notes that for Maddox, this outreach is his way of dealing with the life situation that he’s been dealt. “We’ve always tried to teach him that he’s not a victim of his circumstances— that he can choose to be joyful through the struggles,” she says. Maddox hopes to spread that message outward via nourishment and notes.
Maddox O’Connor and his mom, Shawn.
According to Shawn, the only thing that’s bigger than her son’s heart for serving is his heart for Jesus. “He’s always had this really amazing discernment of his own faith,” Shawn says. He got really sick at age 4 when his stomach stopped working. That was the beginning of his progression. Though his prognosis wasn’t good, Maddox stated, “It’s okay, Mommy. You didn’t know I’d be in this situation, but Jesus knew before I was even born.” “Ever since then he’s always been extremely faithful,” says Shawn, noting that his health issues have given him a perspective that few children can grasp. In short, he believes that in life, we should love. “When I go to the hospital, I always have my mom, my dad and my siblings to tell me they love me, but [homeless people] don’t have that,” Maddox says. “Maybe if I give them blessing bags, they’ll know I love them.” Maddox has three older siblings who are 22, 21 and 13. The family lives in Fishers. Every few months, everyone gathers around a gigantic jar of Nutella to make sandwiches and stuff bags. Maddox, who has aspirations to someday become an astronaut and a youth pastor, has a heart that is 100 times bigger than he is. Not only does he shower the homeless with smiles and hugs but he also doles out compliments in the aisles of the grocery store. “Every woman he walks by, he tells her she’s beautiful,” Shawn says. “He doesn’t think twice about it because caring about people and wanting to make them feel good comes naturally to him.” Search “Maddox’s Mission” on Facebook to find more information about how to support his cause.

approximately 75 FHS families hosting exchange students.”
Hosting a foreign exchange student gives both families and students the positive opportunity to experience how people from another culture live.
FHS has five full-time foreign exchange students each year.
Amy Klink, a school counselor with Fishers High School (FHS), says five FHS families host full-time foreign exchange students each year. “Each full-time foreign exchange student lives with their host family and spends the entire school year attending classes at FHS,” Klink says. “In addition to the fulltime exchange students, FHS students and teachers host numerous short-term foreign exchange students and teachers throughout the year. When you add the full-time and short-term exchange students, we have
“This year, our students are from Spain, Israel, Kazakhstan, and two from Germany,” Klink says. “In addition, FHS hosts many more groups of short-term exchange students from various countries throughout the year. This year we had 24 students from France, ten students from Chile, 25 students from Germany, and 12 students from China. The short-term exchange students stay in Fishers anywhere from five days to three weeks.” The foreign exchange student program gives the students and their host families the opportunity to also learn more about each other, and how they are alike, and 28 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atFishers.com
where their customs differ. “Aside from the obvious sharing of habits, cultures, and customs, the foreign exchange program has many benefits to the exchange students, host families, and FHS students,” Klink says. “The exchange program allows host families to showcase FHS as well as the Fishers community, our state, and our country. The best way to learn is to teach.” Klink noted that as host families try to teach and expose their exchange students to Fishers, they too gain an added knowledge of their community. “Host families and students take pride in all that FHS and their community has to offer,” Klink says. “Exchange students improve their English language skills, while host families and students are exposed to new languages. Exchange
students also bring unique, multicultural perspectives to the classroom. Classroom discussions become richer and more impactful when new perspectives are introduced. This also leads to an increased tolerance and understanding of people from differing backgrounds.” Klink added that the foreign exchange program is good for the exchange students, the host families, FHS, and the Fishers community. “Communication skills are improved for all involved,” Klink says. “Exchange and host students are exposed to different cultures and perspectives.” The program has also encouraged Fishers students to go to school in other countries. “In addition to exchange students coming to Fishers, a majority of host students become exchange students themselves,” Klink says. “FHS students will be traveling to Chile, Germany, and France to stay with students who came to FHS.” Klink says everyone at FHS has really enjoyed working with the foreign exchange student program. “We have been so fortunate at FHS to have some amazing foreign exchange students,” Klink says. “The students who come to Fishers as part of an exchange program are typically some of the brightest, most engaged students. They bring that knowledge and enthusiasm with them, and you just can’t help but smile when they’re around.”
