We the People HSE & FHS Prepare For Nationals After Taking Top Honors at Statewide Competition Writer / Julie Young Photography Provided
When it comes to the issues that matter to all Americans, young people are more engaged than ever, especially at area high schools who recently took top honors at the We the People State Championship competition. Janet Chandler, We the People sponsor at Hamilton Southeastern High School, says the fact that her students are the current champions while neighboring Fishers placed as the First Runner-Up showcases the caliber of program both schools have cultivated. “It speaks well for our district that students want to promote civil discourse about politics today,” she says.
We the People is a national program that was launched in 1987 to commemorate the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. It is designed to promote civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s elementary and secondary students through interactive strategies, relevant content and simulated congressional hearings that allow participants to argue the finer points of the country’s original bylaws in a competitive environment. By competition rule, it is to be a co-curricular class and both schools have offered the program to students since 2002. Elizabeth Paternoster, We the People coach at Fishers High School says she has 29 students on her team and they have become very engaged in the content that is presented in class. In addition, community experts in the various topics volunteer their

time to serve as advisors to the team and prepare them for the competition ahead. “Practice sessions start in October and Fishers has won the state finals in three of the past six years,” Paternoster says. “The high school finals are extremely competitive in Indiana, and Janet and I sit down a few years ago with the ultimate goal of having both schools in the top spots.” The two began hosting the We the People Mudsock competition in order to give both teams more experience before the statewide competition and when their dream came true this year, she says it felt great. “They did a great job testifying on issues such as immigration reform, increasing power of the executive branch, division in Congress and society today, free speech, due process and much more,” Paternoster says. Chandler says the competition is not for the faint of heart. “Students are expected to articulate multiple sides of complicated
issues, present prepared testimony and respond to questions from a panel of judges,” she says. And while her 21 seniors are gearing up for the national competition in April, if Indiana receives a wild card, then the Fishers team will be invited to compete as well. “Last year, Fishers finished first while HSE earned third place honors so we are very excited to be competing in the Nationals,” she adds. Charles R. Dunlap, executive director of the Indiana Bar Foundation says the We the People education model has been shown to increase civic participation for students as they become adults and feels that We the People students are an inspiration to all. “These students instill hope and confidence in our next generation of leaders,” he says.

of extremely loyal customers since they opened in 2014.
Ana Esqueda, the owner of Burritos & Beer, 14094 Trade Center Drive, Fishers, says the title of her restaurant leaves no doubt as to what’s popular on their menu.
“We’re a family-owned company,” Esqueda says. “We also own two additional companies: a construction company since 2004 (AEF Construction Inc.), and a crane company since 2006 (AEF Crane Services, LLC). Our offices for those are located here in Fishers as well.”
“Our customers love our steak burritos, and most of them add our queso,” Esqueda says. “They also love and are obsessed with our jalapeño ranch salsa. They add it to everything: our burritos, quesadillas, tacos, taco salads and chips.”
But Burritos & Beer has a special place in her heart. She wants to continue to keep things special with new food items on the menu.
Burritos & Beer has attracted a large number “We introduced tortas (Mexican 8 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2019 / atFishers.com
sandwiches) at the beginning of the year, and they’ve become one of our customers’ favorites,” Esqueda says. “I love all of our menu items, but the ones I eat most often are our shrimp tacos, burritos and nachos. They’re full of flavor.” Esqueda adds that Burritos & Beer has traditional items that are found in the heart of Mexico, and also Baja, California and New Mexico. Their Tortilla Soup is not to be missed. Another excellent menu item is the Grilled Quesadillas, served in a flour tortilla with cheese and fresh Pico de Gallo, topped
with sour cream and a choice of delicious filling. The flavorful food has been one of the main reasons the restaurant has been so successful. “The community response has been very positive,” Esqueda says. “Our customers love our food. It is very rewarding when they let us know how much they like our food. We don’t do much advertising. Our best advertising has been word-of-mouth. Our sales have increased on average by 25 percent each year since we opened.” Esqueda adds that she can’t say enough positive things about Fishers. “Fishers has been our home for the last 13 years,” Esqueda says. “We live here and work here, and we have been able to thrive in this community. We are so excited for all the economic growth our city is having.”
“Our rice is not precooked, like in many other Mexican restaurants. Our beans, salsas and guacamole are not canned or pre-made,” Esqueda says. “We have lots of choices that our customers can choose from.” Burritos & Beer Restaurant is located at 14094 Trade Center Drive in Fishers. You can give them a call at 317-573-8003 or visit them online at burritosbeer.com.

On YOUR MARK HSE Track & Field Star NOah MalOne Excels Despite Rare Eye COnditiOn Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer
At just 17 years old, Noah Malone is already one of the fastest high school runners in Indiana. The difference between this Hamilton Southeastern High School junior and other runners, though — Malone is sprinting through finish lines that he can’t even see. In the summer of 2015, Malone was at a junior Olympics track and field meet when he looked up at the scoreboard to see his times and realized that his vision was suddenly blurry. Not thinking too much of it then, he arrived for his first day of school later in August only to find out that he couldn’t see or read the board in his classroom either.
After a visit to the eye doctor, Malone was diagnosed with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy — an inherited form of vision loss that has left him legally blind. It was a nerve-wracking revelation for Malone at the time. “We thought I just needed glasses or contacts,” Malone says. “But when I got to the eye doctor for tests, I couldn’t see anything. It was shocking to me because it all happened so fast.” Because the visual impairment affects his optic nerves, glasses or contacts don’t work for Malone. Thankfully, his condition has plateaued, and he will never go completely blind. Still, the visual impairment has been a huge life change in his day to day, much less running. 10 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2019 / atFishers.com
Malone describes what he sees as the opposite of tunnel vision. He has retained some of his peripheral vision but looking at anything straight on is most difficult for him. “I can see good enough to maneuver and get around,” Malone says. “Small details, though, are very hard to see. The worst days of it were early on when I first had it my eighth grade and freshman years. Living with this for three or four years now, I’ve been able to adjust to life.” Throughout the school week, Malone spends most of his day at the Indiana School for the Blind & Visually Impaired for classes there before taking the bus back to HSE to finish his final two periods for the day.
Making the Paralympic team was my biggest gOal in 2018. It means a lOt tO represent Our cOuntry.
Malone has not let his eye condition slow him down in the least bit. Quite the opposite, he has excelled at track and field and continues chasing down his goals each year. Malone has loved running ever since he was a kid. His mother saw him running around in the backyard one day and thought it would be something fun for him to do competitively. His parents soon realized he was rather quick on his feet. After competing and reaching regionals in the fourth grade, Malone’s passion for running had fully blossomed. “I take track as a platform to be competitive,” Malone says. “I’ve always enjoyed running. I knew it would be something I would continue doing.” His freshman year at HSE, barely a year after being diagnosed with his eye condition, Malone set new HSE records for the 100 and 200-meter dash. “I didn’t expect anything close to that kind of success my freshman year,” Malone says. “I don’t think a freshman at HSE had ever broken two track records before that. It was really a huge confidence boost for me. I actually broke my own records again my sophomore year. Breaking records is always a fun goal to chase after.” This past year, Malone finished just twotenths of a second away from a state championship in the 100 and finished fourth in the 200 at state. Topping off his summer, he also traveled to Arizona to participate in the Paralympics with Team USA. atFishers.com / FEBRUARY 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 11
“Making the Paralympic team was my biggest goal in 2018,” Malone says. “It means a lot to represent our country. Most of the people I competed against were older, some in their 30s. It was intimidating at first, but it was really exciting, too. It was amazing meeting other Paralympic runners and hearing their stories. I made a lot of friends in that community.” Recently, Malone was also named the 2018 U.S. Paralympics Track & Field High School Male Track Athlete of the Year. It is the second time on the All-American list for Malone as he took home the award beating out runners across the entire nation. “It was a complete surprise,” he says. “It means a lot to me to win that award. It’s a benchmark I’ve wanted to reach. It makes me want to work harder this year and maintain that top spot.” Malone’s accomplishments have not come without hard work and dedication. The optic neuropathy condition changed everything about Malone’s workout, practice and meet routines. One big change came in the 4x1 meet. Malone, being the fastest runner, has always been the anchor on his team — the last one to grab the baton to finish out the race. With his eye condition, he could no longer see his teammate coming and know when to grab the baton. So, his coach developed an audible signal to let him know when the baton comes. It’s a practice that he still uses today.
“It was extremely hard making those adjustments early on,” Malone says. On meet days Malone has a unique routine. It starts the day before his competitions. He always eats a spud from McAlister’s for dinner before every meet. At the meet, Malone makes sure he is stretching and staying on his feet. He also listens to a tailored playlist, usually including J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar, to get amped up for the day. A crucial part of his preparation at meets includes arriving early to walk the track and get a feel for the turns, the look of the track and making sure he is aware of where the finish line is. “People have asked, ‘If you are legally blind
how can you see the lines?’” Malone says. “I can see the lines on the track. Some tracks are better than others depending on the colors. In a 100 meter, obviously, I run straight, but for a 200, the curve can be difficult sometimes. The biggest challenge for me though is the finish line. Sometimes I’ve thought the finish line was maybe two meters before it really was and slowed down too early. Walking the track before the meet really helps me get a feel of where everything is.” But when the race starts, Malone hits his stride and everything is a blur — both literally and figuratively. “When I have a really good race, I don’t remember anything at all from it,” Malone says. “I try not to think too much while I’m running and just be in the moment.” With the indoor track season already in full swing, he is looking towards even bigger goals in 2019 and beyond. Malone wants to finish strong for a state championship this year. Beyond that, he aspires to run for a D1 school in college. Along the way, he hopes people who hear his story are inspired and realize that anyone can accomplish their goals despite any limitations they think they have. “My condition will never slow down my goals,” Malone says. “If you work hard, good things come.”

I don’t know about you, but I feel like the temperature in Indy dropped drastically this year. I was ready for the change in weather though because my chunky knit sweaters were calling my name, although I might have a different opinion as the weather gets colder. If you’re like me, you’re probably having a slightly difficult time rolling out of bed in the morning to get dressed for the day. Your warm bed probably sounds much better
than putting on your work clothes and heading out into the crisp winter morning. To give you some inspiration, I wanted to share a few winter trends that are easy to include in your wardrobe this year. 1. STATEMENT JACKETS
I have to be honest in saying that I don’t always love to feel like a marshmallow in my winter coat and driving in it is the worst. It does keep me warm, but it’s great to have some variety with statement coats. We’ve seen the teddy jacket all over Instagram and Pinterest so that’s the one FEBRUARY 2019
I’m adding to my coat closet this year. It’s soft, generally not too bulky and easy to layer. Statement coats are great for the day when you want to actually wear your coat as part of your outfit. 2. SHERPAS
Oh, they’re back! And still just as cozy. This was a trend we saw in every store last winter. It seemed like these oversized, cuddly pullovers were designed in every color, with pockets or without pockets. Sherpas are great for your weekend running around or your evening routine with your kiddos.
3. PLEATED SKIRTS
Now hear me out before you think, “no way.” Pleated skirts were seen all over the runways for winter this year. They are being styled with sweaters, band tees and moto jackets, turtlenecks and statement coats. I personally love these skirts because the length is appropriate for work or cocktail hour and the shoe possibilities are endless to complete the look. These skirts are also great for the holiday parties you have coming up. 4. OVERSIZED CARDIGANS
8. BLAZERS
Bring on the blazers because this is a wardrobe essential. I personally rock blazers with band tees, lace tanks, regular white tees or even over sweaters. You can do so much with this piece in your daily life and transition it across seasons so, for me, it’s a must. 9. PLAID
It’s the last trend I want to highlight, but probably one of the most relatable for those of us in Indy who enjoy a good sweater or
Sweater weather, cardi party, whatever term works for you, cardigans are in! It seems that the more oversized they are, the better. I personally style these chunky knits with a striped long sleeve tee underneath and my comfortable Hudson denim from Evereve. You’ll also find that I’m generally wearing a comfortable bootie of some type for a relaxed look. 5. ANIMAL PRINT
Hello zebra, leopard and snakeskin. We are seeing a little bit of everything when it comes to animal print this year. Snakeskin booties or mules have been hugely popular with cowl neck cardigans and denim. I personally own at least three leopard sweaters or cardigans and a couple of shoes in the print. It’s neutral enough to be dressy and not overstated. 6. SHADES OF BROWNS
It feels like we went back to the 70s for this color to become a trend again, but designers are eating it up. Brown is one of those colors that I like because it’s different and can be used in a variety of staple pieces. From sweaters to pants to dresses, you can find this shade in all of it. 7. SLOUCHY BOOTS
The boots I’m wearing here are some of my favorite of all time. They combine two trends with the plaid print and it’s funny how much these actually go with. Slouchy boots are great with skirts or denim. FEBRUARY 2019

So, cheers to you, you’re on trend. Winter fashion is a great time to play with layers, new colors and even a fun print or two. If you’re wondering more about how to style these trends you can visit trendyinindy. com or head on over to Pinterest for some inspiration. Cheers to winter trends at their best!

Local Blacksmith Sharek Gadd Talks Love of a Lost Art & Participating On Discovery Channel’s Master of Arms Writer / Josh Brown . Photographer / Michael Durr
Sparks fly, quite literally, as hammer strikes metal, and the sound can be heard, echoing off in the distance — clank, clank, clank, clank. As smoke from the burning coal billows out the top of the forge, Sharek Gadd smiles, “Watch this,” he says as he begins to shape and mold the hot iron into a hook. He’s right where he wants to be. These are the sights and sounds most days for Gadd, a local blacksmith. He started the hobby more than 10 years ago when a friend gifted him the coal forge he uses today. “It’s old school,” he says. “Most people use gas forges and power hammers. I use a 6-pound or a 9-pound sledge.” The hobby has turned into a full-time passion for Gadd. FEBRUARY 2019
“I have always loved making things, even when I was a kid,” he says. “I got into metalworking more as a teenager. A friend and mentor gifted me the forge many years ago, and I’ve been doing it ever since.” Forging is a lost art. You would likely be hard pressed to find anyone else around the Hamilton County area that takes it on full time, much less with an old coal forge. Gadd, for the most part, is self-taught in forging, woodworking and metalworking, aside from a few mentors and friends along the way. Creating and forging has always been somewhat of an escape from reality for Gadd. At a young age, he lost his father and four other siblings to a hereditary form of cancer. “I didn’t know then, but it was a good way to cope,” he says. “I actually put it down for a while after my dad died, and I joined the army. When I got out in 2005, I moved here to Fishers and got back into art. It has been a healthy way to deal with those things.” Gadd creates all kinds of pieces through woodworking and forging. He enjoys making musical instruments, like banjos. But he specializes in fullyfunctioning, historic guns. “I like creating things that have a life of their own once I have finished them,” Gadd says. “I really enjoy making the historic guns. These are guns from the 17th or 18th century, and they are all handmade. All the details and pieces have to fit just right for them to fire and function properly.” Gadd’s love for historic guns has led to memberships in several shooting clubs as well. He is a member of the National Long Rifle Muzzle Loading FEBRUARY 2019
Association. That group has been around since the 20s. Each year, in the spring and fall, Gadd participates in competitions in Friendship, Indiana. Each participant in the competition brings their own, handmade guns to shoot. “The competitions are always fun,” he says. “It’s great to meet people in that community, too. There is a lot of history involved there.” Gadd also creates unique pieces for clients. Through his website or Facebook page, people sometimes reach out to him about creating certain items. He prices his work based on the time it takes for each project. The asks are sometimes interesting ones. An older lady once approached Gadd at Allisonville Nursery, Garden & Home to ask if he could make her a steel mask. He also teaches forging classes for those interested in learning how to create pieces like locks, crosses or bigger items like knives and other weapons or tools. Gadd’s forging prowess recently got him some national attention. Earlier in 2018, a friend told Gadd about a new Discovery Channel show that pitted smiths against one another in a timed competition. Gadd applied, on a whim, not really thinking too much about it. He was surprised to get a phone call a few weeks later. After several other interviews, he was one of a small group of smiths
across the country selected to participate on the new show — “Master of Arms.” Gadd was flown out to a location for about four days for filming of the show. “It was a pretty extensive interview process,” Gadd says. “So, getting selected was pretty cool. I knew going into the show, the biggest competition would be the clock. There were three competitors pitted against one another in a three to six-hour challenge. I didn’t make it too far, but it was a fun experience — exciting and stressful. The directors and staff were awesome. It was great to just see how a show is put together, too.”
I Have always loved making things, even when I was a kid.
Gadd appeared on the first episode of the show, which aired Nov. 2. He enjoyed a watch party with friends and family at Wooden Bear Brewing at Geist to celebrate. “About 50 people showed up for the watch party,” Gadd says. “It was a lot of fun. It was weird seeing myself on TV, though.” Looking back, Gadd credits his father for where he is at today with his work. “He worked hard to provide and didn’t come home till late at night,” Gadd says. “We didn’t have as much time to do stuff together. But he had noticed my hobbies. I came home from school one day and he had gotten me a set of tools, carving knives, paint brushes and things like that. He was always my biggest supporter.”

INDY’S CHOICE FOR MASTERING CHRONIC CONDITIONS & SKINCARE Easy Energy Wellness — a new stateof-the-art detox and skin care center on the south side of Indianapolis — takes a holistic approach to optimal health. It all started when owner Sandra Carrasquillo was worried about her son after he was diagnosed with chronic digestive problems. It quickly consumed all her free time as she searched the world over for the best of the best when it comes to resetting the body. Sandra and her son Levi finally decided to start Easy Energy Wellness after seeing the dramatic improvement in Levi when
they implemented a combination of detox protocols. After hundreds of hours of research and many miles of traveling, Sandra found help for her son’s major digestive issues without medication or surgery. “My research has led me to some interesting devices that have restored his energy, helped him regain lost weight and brought his blood count into the normal range,” Carrasquillo says. “I am thankful for my son’s improved health, and I hope that my quest can help improve lives through the services we offer.” FEBRUARY 2019
Easy Energy Wellness’ detox consult takes a radical approach to nutrition for people that are committed to long-term health benefits. This creates the ultimate foundation. Many of their protocols focus on the liver, which acts as the first line of defense against toxins and unhealthy habits. If this organ goes unchecked, it can lead to inflammation elsewhere in the body. Easy Energy also partners with Dr. CJ Pabla, a board certified MD and IU Med School graduate with 20 years of experience. He now practices functional medicine.
REDUCING DISCOMFORT & LOWERING STRESS Easy Energy Wellness uses five noninvasive devices to speed up the process. A local doctor told Sandra that ozone might be able to naturally suppress the underlying cause of the inflammation. This led her to eventually stumble upon the king of detoxification – the HOCATT. It uses medicinal ozone, infrared, electro frequency, essential oils, and all in a 30-minute session. It is the only one of its kind in Indiana. Have you ever thought about how circulation plays into your overall health? BEMER (Bio-Electro Magnetic Energy Regulation) and PEMF (Pulse-Electro Magnetic Field) devices will enhance general blood-flow, nutrient and oxygen delivery, and cardiac function. These devices can penetrate deep into problematic tissue and are utilized by top athletes to allow them to recover much faster. INCREASING ENERGY & IMPROVING LIVES

Fishers Receives Statewide Cultural District Designation Writer & Photography / Jocelyn Vare
Downtown Fishers has seen many changes since it was first given the name “Nickel Plate District” in 2012. The amphitheater was built (and quickly expanded) to host music, movies and performances that draw large crowds. Central Green is the place for lunchtime music concerts and the Pocket Park is where families enjoy ice cream cones and chalk art. Electrical boxes are painted with vibrant colors in the Nickel Plate District. City Hall doubles as an art gallery, featuring new exhibits from local and regional artists. Colorful banners decorate street light poles and parking garages. Visitors of all ages experiment with art materials at the Ignite Studio in the lower level of the Fishers library. The Nickel Plate District’s special event
calendar is always full, too. Downtown merchants, artists and performers present an annual “Arts Crawl” each summer, an evening of artwork and performances hosted by more than 20 local businesses. The two-day Blues Fest music festival brings local and national acts to the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. Spark!Fishers debuted last summer to become a new patriotic community celebration in the Nickel Plate District. In just a few years, Fishers’ downtown district has evolved into a special hub of community art and culture, now recognized by the State of Indiana. The Indiana Arts Commission recently confirmed the Nickel Plate District’s importance to Fishers by designating it as a Statewide Cultural District. atFishers.com / FEBRUARY 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 29
This designation has only been granted to nine other communities in Indiana since the program was initiated in 2010. The designation is not easy to achieve, either. It is granted through a vote of the board of the Indiana Arts Commission after an intense application and review process. A Statewide Cultural District must be a well-
recognized area of a community in which there is a high concentration of cultural assets that anchor the area. Many Fishers residents would consider the amphitheater as the community’s favorite gathering place and anchor of the Nickel Plate District.
a Statewide Cultural District signifies an ongoing commitment to the development and sustainability of the Nickel Plate District as a community cultural asset.
Now, the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) has considered the entire Nickel Plate District as a special community place as well. IAC is a State of Indiana agency and premier arts leader for the state. IAC states that the Statewide Cultural District designation is an opportunity for a community to showcase their quality of life and utilize the arts as an engine for economic and community growth. “This designation enables a community to enhance the visibility of its creative and economic prosperity,” says IAC Executive Director Lewis C. Ricci.
The other nine Indiana communities that have received the designation are wellknown arts and cultural destinations. They include Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District, Columbus Arts District, Madison Arts and Cultural District, Nashville Arts and Entertainment District, Tippecanoe Arts and Cultural District (Lafayette / West Lafayette), NoCo Arts & Cultural District ( Jeffersonville) and Terre Haute Arts & Cultural District. Two designated districts are Fishers’ Hamilton County neighbors, the Carmel Art & Design District and Noblesville Cultural Arts District.
Most importantly, Fishers’ acceptance as

from the Indiana Arts Commission,” says Leah McGrath, Fishers’ Deputy Mayor. “This is such an exciting moment for our community. This designation signifies not only our commitment to advancing the arts and culture in Fishers but is also recognition of the vibrancy and cultural significance of the Nickel Plate District.” The Nickel Plate District’s art and cultural experiences continue to grow. Just last month, a new art-focused business opened in the district, near the new mural by Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt on Maple Street. High Frequency Arts is the dream of owner Jill Lehman and a unique gem in the Nickel Plate District. It is a modern, contemporary and refreshingly abstract art gallery, consultant, creative gathering hub and event venue. It is an enterprise driven by art and creativity and is inspiring the Fishers community already. “The Nickel Plate District is our city center and fills us with a sense of nostalgia and vitality around its future,” Lehman says. “We saw it as the ideal location to build a thriving arts and gallery district and are excited to be a part of it.” No matter where you roam in the Nickel Plate District, you are sure to discover surprises of art, design and music. High Frequency Arts, The Art Gallery in City Hall, The NPD Amp, The Farmers Market, Gallery 116, Ignite Studio and many more await you. As a new Statewide Cultural District, Fishers is proud to call the Nickel Plate District our home for the arts of all kinds.

FLIRT SALON & SPA OWNER TALKS 17 YEARS OF SUCCESS Writer / Julie Young Photographer / Matthew Gallegos
With a chic, calming and sophisticated atmosphere and a team of knowledgeable stylists ready to keep you on the cusp of the latest trends, Flirt Salon & Spa is a go-to for all of your beauty needs. Owner Leslie Sublett first opened Flirt Salon & Spa in 2001 around the same time that the city of Indianapolis opened the bridge between Allisonville Road and Keystone Avenue and right from the start, it proved to be a huge success. In 2006, Sublett decided to purchase land in Fishers and build a new facility, hoping that her clients would follow her to the new location at Crosspoint Commons Road.
“I was taking a big chance,” she says. “There weren’t a lot of businesses out here back then. Still, I just felt that the area was growing. I liked the fact that it was close to I-69 and I already had a lot of clients who were from the Fishers, Carmel and Geist areas so I knew this would be a central location.” It was a hunch that turned out to be correct and for the next two years, Sublett’s salon continued to grow and thrive. Then the economy began to fell apart and she saw a number of salons and day spas close as patrons tightened their budgets. Still, Flirt Salon & Spa continued to grow. New stylists joined the team. Sublett’s success story continued. “I admit, I was scared at the time that it 32 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2019 / atFishers.com
wouldn’t continue on a growth pattern, but the business is still thriving. I’m very blessed,” she says. “I thank God every day for my success.” Sublett attributes part of that success to the welcoming atmosphere and great vibe that exists throughout the salon. Unlike similar businesses that opt for individual booth space, which separates stylists and clients, Flirt Salon & Spa has an open concept where clients can see new styles on other customers and ideas can be exchanged in a friendly environment. “They feel good when they walk in and they feel good when they walk out,” Sublett says. Flirt Salon & Spa offers the full range of
services for both men and women including hair, nails, eyelash extensions, derma blading, facials and waxing. They also offer microdermabrasion, makeup application, skin fillers and even a Botox for hair treatment. Sublett says she learned about this service from a former employee and described it as a smoothing treatment that begins at the follicle and makes the hair look like new. “It doesn’t last forever of course, but it is a wonderful service and I believe we are the only salon in the area that offers it,” she says. Sublett adds that while they are often seen as a “splurge,” her salon services are more of a need rather than a want. “When you look your best, you feel your best and the world around you improves,” she says. “What could be a better feeling than that?” Flirt Salon & Spa is located at 7698 Crosspoint Commons Road in Fishers. Give them a call at 317-849-1800 or visit them online at flirtsalonandspa.com.

WHITE RIVER DOCUMENTARY FILMS DEBUT IN CENTRAL INDIANA hree new films about the White River — and the lives it touches — recently premiered Jan. 17 at Nickel Plate Arts. The films, funded by Indiana Humanities, build on the award-winning Next Indiana Campfires program, which focused on the White River in 2018 and will continue to do so in 2019. The films debuted in a series of public events in January and February and will be available to stream online in March. Over the last year, Indiana Humanities focused its Next Indiana Campfires program on the White River watershed and the larger question of how Hoosiers relate to water and to each other across watersheds. To explore these connections further — and to document a particularly exciting moment for Indiana waterways — Indiana Humanities selected local filmmakers to create three short films about the White River. The films are each between 11 and 15 minutes in length. A trailer is available to watch at IndianaHumanities.org/CampfiresFilms. Through the films, viewers will meet volunteers, artists, activists, farmers, engineers, developers, city officials, hikers and parents. They’ll paddle downstream with Friends of the White River, tunnel under the city with Dig Indy and soar overhead with the great blue herons of our region. The filmmakers were chosen through a competitive RFP process initiated earlier this year. At the free launch party in January, Indiana Humanities, in partnership with Hamilton County Tourism, screened the films and held a Q&A with the filmmakers. Attendees enjoyed snacks and beers compliments of Upland Brewing. 34 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2019 / atFishers.com
Work on a two-county White River Vision Plan coincides with the release of the film. “The planning team has met with hundreds of individuals who live near or are passionate about this river during this planning period,” says Hamilton County Tourism President & CEO Brenda Myers. “Nothing we have done in the visioning process captures the community conversations about this river as these three films have.” Leah Nahmias, director of programs and community engagement at Indiana Humanities, says “We are excited to debut these films, made in Indiana by Hoosier filmmakers, which show views of the river and perspectives on the White River watershed you never knew existed. We hope they awaken new appreciation of the White River and spark meaningful conversations about its future.” Here is a list of the films and filmmakers: “Braided with the Current” by Katelyn Calhoun and Hannah Hodges: Katelyn Calhoun has spent the past five years in Indianapolis creating documentary content. She is currently in pre-production for an Appalachian Trail short documentary, (Tr) alias. Hannah Hodges co-founded and runs Hodges Marketing Solutions, a digital marketing agency, with her husband Mark. She
is involved in the Indianapolis film community and has a variety of experience ranging from work on documentaries and narrative shorts to corporate videos and live events. “Onward Ever: The Becoming of Indiana’s White River” by Brandon Walsh: Brandon Walsh is an Indy-based video producer. His narrative short films have screened at a number of festivals across the Midwest, and he has made national award-winning commercial work with the advertising agency CVR. “White River: Perspectives” by Hannah Lindgren: Hannah Lindgren is a visual storyteller who works for The Story Shop in Pendleton and hails from the northeast side of Indianapolis. She specializes in telling the stories of nonprofits, causes, small businesses and communities through short videos. This is her fourth documentary film. In March, the full-length films will be available online, along with a discussion toolkit designed to help people talk about the ideas they raise with neighbors, students, friends and family. Indiana Humanities will also be offering stipends to community groups who host public screenings and discussions of the films in 2019 and 2020. You can learn more at IndianaHumanities.org/ CampfiresFilms.

professional development or individuals and families in a crisis all need help with empowerment. “Many adults, like veterans, need help with professional development if they have to make a career change and reinvent themselves,” Sethi says. So, they set about creating America’s Role Models. The organization’s mission is threefold. Through mentoring and education, the organization wants to empower people with confidence and knowledge, enhance their lifestyles with mental health initiatives and uplift families who need financial support.
America’s Role Models Fishers Organization Seeks to Empower, Enhance & Uplift Others Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photography Provided by America’s Role Models
Everyone needs a role model in life but not everyone has one. Fishers resident, Yogesh “Yogi” Sethi is changing that with the new organization he founded, America’s Role Models, Inc. Yogi and his wife, Hina, founded the organization in 2017, a project several years in the making. The husband and wife team were born and raised in India. When Hina’s family relocated to the United States in Carmel, the two lost touch. But years later, Hina never forgot Yogi. She kept in touch with a friend back home in India who promised to get a letter to Yogi through his brother. Yogi eventually got the letter, and the two reconnected. Yogi relocated to Indiana, they planned their future shortly after and married in 2002.
was something present in both cultures that left them questioning how they could make a change. “We noticed women in both cultures were affected by inequality,” Sethi says. “We both realized we need to find a platform that promotes empowerment.” Yogi and Hina also noticed another faction besides women that needed help with empowerment. In the United States, both had their fair share of challenges assimilating to a new culture. Ironically, it wasn’t the differences in the culture that stood out to them, it 36 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2019 / atFishers.com
The Sethis took a broader look and discovered some shocking statistics. “We looked at the numbers and we realized inequality affects even more people than we thought,” Sethi says. “That’s what gave me the fire to fight.” Eager to get started, Yogi established the America’s Role Models Foundation. He connected with Sheryl Matthys, a successful broadcaster, life coach and founder of the organization Successful Women Made Here. She has spent years empowering women through beauty. “At the spa, Hina’s mission is always to treat all customers as equal,” Sethi says. “We had an already existing business to spread our platform.” The ARM platform for the empowerment of women, youth and families in need works to provide education and awareness about gender equality and ethnic diversity. But it goes deeper. “We’re all humans, and we all need help in creating balance in our lives,” Sethi says. “I see how much stress and anxiety is in our daily lives, which goes for youth and adults. The youth of today have tremendous pressure to achieve good grades. I earned medals for my academic achievement and I want to motivate youth to get that too. “Adults are under fire, too.
