Sydney Parrish is focused on one thing in 2020 — helping the Hamilton Southeastern Lady Royals get back to the state championship. “That’s the main goal,” she says. Last season, Parrish led HSE to a 27-1 overall record and the school’s first IHSAA Girls Basketball 4A State Championship, no small feat. Along the way, Parrish averaged 21 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.9 steals and 1 block per game. In the state championship game, she put up 30 points and 10 rebounds to clinch the title over Lawrence North High School.
Last year’s performance also earned Parrish the Gatorade Player of the Year Award for girls basketball. While those accomplishments are great, she says, it’s not something she has too much time to focus on right now.
Parrish is certainly doing her part to help the team repeat.
As of mid-January, the 6’2” senior guard is averaging 26.3 points, 2.2 assists, 7.4 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. Last November, Parrish broke the HSE girls “Winning state, of course, was a huge deal,” basketball scoring record, eclipsing the 1,374 she says. “But we can’t look back at our point mark set by Taya Reimer in 2013. Right season last year, we are focused on this year before the New Year, she passed Zach Gunn and getting there again. We have been taking for HSE’s all-time scoring record. it one game at a time and, hopefully, will be playing all through February and get back to The records, she says, are incredible accomplishments and probably something the state championship.” 6 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2020 / atFishers.com
she will be able to reflect on more after her high school career ends. For now, Parrish is focused on getting even better. “For me, personally, I want to be a better leader this year,” Parrish adds. “Last year, I wasn’t a huge leader as a junior. That is something I am focused on this year, being a leader on and off the court and being the best teammate I can be. Being a senior helps, when some of the younger players look up to you.” Parrish, ranked as a Top 10 national player according to ESPN, profiles as a guard. She typically runs the offense as point guard for HSE. In recent years, she has been scouted as a shooter, something she says was not always the case in her game. “Playing point guard has developed my game and being able to handle the ball under pressure,” she says. “I am getting in the post more, too. My post play has evolved a lot. Growing up, I was never really a great shooter. But then people started tagging me as a shooter.” That shooter tagline hasn’t come without hard work. Parrish is a bit of a gym rat. Prior to practice, after practice, even, sometimes, on the weekends, she can be found in the gym getting up extra shots.
“I just try to get in as many extra shots as I can,” she says. “Getting those extra reps in really helps me prepare for when it is game time.” At 6’2”, Parrish is one of the taller guards handling the ball in the IHSAA. That growth spurt, she says, started around eighth grade. Ever since then, she hasn’t looked back. Growing up, Parrish also played soccer and swam. But she grew to love basketball rather quickly. “I quit soccer and swimming around sixth grade,” she says. “I really focused on basketball as my main sport then. By eighth grade, I knew I wanted to play high school ball and beyond. I’m really competitive, so I think that competitive drive on the basketball court drew me to it. There is just something special about this game, for me, that separated it from other sports.” Of course, it helps that Parrish grew up in atFishers.com / FEBRUARY 2020 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 7
a basketball family as well. Parrish’s dad, Shawn, played high school ball at Owen Valley High School in Spencer, Indiana, and in college at Ball State University. Her mother, Aimee, played at the collegiate level as well with Valparaiso University. Both her parents, she says, have made a huge impact on her own basketball career. “My family has been unbelievably supportive,” Parrish says. “My dad has always been like a coach growing up. I’ve always had him there through everything, and he knows my game really well. My grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, mom, everyone is always at the games supporting me. They believe in me, and I can’t thank them enough for that.” While Parrish is focused on her senior season, she is also excited about the future of her basketball career. Last April, she officially committed to play at the University of Oregon under head women’s basketball coach Kelly Graves.
“I am so excited to play at Oregon,” she says. “The bond I saw that the coaches and players had with one another was a big factor. They are all really close with one another and you could see it on the floor whether they were playing in a game or practicing. It just felt right. I wanted to go to a winning program and they’ve become one of the top teams in the nation.” Ultimately, Parrish says, pro-ball would be a dream and is a goal she is working towards. “I absolutely want to play professionally,” she says. “If that is the WNBA, then great, but even if it were overseas, I would at least want to play for a couple of years. I love this sport that much and definitely want to stay in it for a little while.” With her senior year coming to a close and college on the way, Parrish is certainly set up to continue leaving a legacy in the game she loves.

KOOPMAN FAMILY IS THANKFUL FOR COMMUNITY SUPPORT & REMEMBERS THE LATE FPD K9 HARLEJ
Officer Jarred Koopman, his wife Kimberly and kids Cannon (7) and Rowan (5)
Writer / Kimberly Koopman Photographer / Glenda White
Being a law enforcement family has its challenges. The way many people and the media currently portray the police community has had us wondering as if the question in our minds is true. “Are there very many people who believe in the mission of what police men and women do every day to protect between the line of good and evil?” The job of a police officer is completely unpredictable. They never know exactly what they are walking into, yet they always go. How many of us can say we would do that job? If I’m being honest, the largest part of me, wouldn’t personally sign up to take that position. Funny, the irony of being married to Jarred, who did. The hardest part of all, as a K9 team, they are most often front lines to any pursuit. As a wife, I often worried whether Jarred and Harlej would come home each night together. The countless times we shouted goodbye as they would run out the door to help someone who needed them was the exact reason I felt so grateful that Jarred had his K9 partner with him. Harlej was a part of our family. The boys spent numerous hours playing fetch with him and, like any dog, he would play until he got tired. Then he would take his Kong toy and sit right in the middle of my flowers to cool off. I would usually notice and say, Harlej! No buddy!” as Jarred would laugh. Every single morning, Jarred would take him for his morning walk and no matter what the boys were doing, they raced to get their boots and jackets on to take a walk with them. November 13, 2019 is a date etched into
our hearts. A horrifying memory. It is the night Jarred called me at 3:30 in the morning to tell me that Harlej was shot and died while searching for someone who had run from them. The sorrow in his voice was palpable. I cried, terrified, hoping it was only just a nightmare. It is the call no police wife should ever have to hear and the one we all pray, if it has to happen, skips over our family. One of the other officers working that night, a good friend of ours, came to the house to pick the boys and I up and brought us to the hospital. It is where we saw Harlej and were able to say goodbye one final time. FEBRUARY 2020
That morning, Jarred came home alone. Without his partner and to a feeling of emptiness. When we left the hospital I thought we would be sad. That the shift would be sad and that we might have a quiet little funeral at the police department. But when 6:00 a.m. came and the news broke the story, we never could have imagined the whirlwind that ensued upon our world. Our phones blew up with friends and family who wanted to know if Jarred was OK and how sorry they were to hear the news about Harlej. The days that followed became a
The men and women who went into danger that night with Jarred and Harlej are heroic. The countless men and women on duty did their jobs so no one else got hurt, those who came while off duty to search to find the evidence left behind, and those who fought to make the wrong that happened that night into a story of success. Not failure. Our family is so grateful to you. It’s taken me some time to process how much this has meant to me. To our family. And I think more processing is still to come. To someone who was questioning whether people still believe in what officers do in the fight between good and evil, I no longer question. You have given me a hope that could never come without such tragedy. You have shown me that there is a belief in the mission of what police officers stand for. Instead of shouting your views on the rooftops, you simply and effectively show up.

When Jarred and I learned that so many people had brought dog treats, cards, posters and pictures we were blown away. There were flowers, and wind chimes, stuffed animals and tennis balls. All to honor our hero, Harlej. Gifts, monetary donations to the K9 fund, police patches and coins, photos and blankets, not to mention the cards that came, not only from our community, but
It was rippling from our hearts to our police family. Rippling to the extension of the blue line family, to families all over the country and beyond. This wasn’t just a story about a dog dying. It was the story being written about how selflessness prevails for the greater good of the whole. It’s what officers do on a daily basis. FEBRUARY 2020
are a simple family that believes in simple living. We are very aware that no one has to do anything. Nothing has been required by anyone. No gifts or cards needed to be sent, no money gifted. Not one fundraiser or gift sent. And yet so much has been given. So much support has been shown and you all have gifted us with a new perspective on how to look at this life with gratitude. We can no longer move forward in the same ways as we did before this experience. We are proud of Harlej’s sacrifice and what it has given us. We are proud to be a police family. And all of this couldn’t have happened without the support of our community. You have lifted us when we felt sorrow. You supported us in love, and you gave us a renewed view of what it means to be a family who sacrifices for the greater good.

Craig Huse, president and co-owner of St. Elmo
Writer / Jon Shoulders . Photographer / Michael Durr
orthside fans of 1933 Lounge at St. Elmo Steak House no longer have to trek all the way to downtown Indy to enjoy the food, drinks and unique atmosphere it offers. 1933 Lounge by St. Elmo opened on December 3 at The Yard at Fishers District, offering a lunch and dinner menu for guests 21 and older. “It’s great to be in Fishers, which is such a big growth area,” says Craig Huse, president and co-owner of St. Elmo, and co-owner of Huse Culinary. Three years ago, Huse and his team began searching for a location to launch a new and expanded 1933 Lounge concept and signed a lease to secure their location at The Yard a year later. Construction began in the winter of 2019 on the 5,000-square-foot eatery, which seats about 180 patrons and also features a patio and a private, 16-seat dining room inside. “With the growth and development of Fishers, we knew there was potential for us,” Huse says. “People always think of all the residential growth, but I was really thinking of the business growth as well. I think 1933 and HC Tavern + Kitchen, which is the other restaurant we’re doing at The Yard, pair very well with the business clientele and the residential clientele in Fishers.” 1933’s lunch and dinner menu includes the small plates and apps that St. Elmo has become known for, like spicy shrimp cocktail, wagyu beef meatballs and a seafood tower. Entrees like the South African lobster tails, bone-in ribeye, grilled salmon and filet mignon round out the food selection. “Our three sushi rolls are going over well so far, and people have been raving about our heirloom tomato salad with burrata and pickled onion,” Huse adds. “When we put this concept together, we knew we wanted to expand the menu beyond the 1933 downtown concept, which is small plates and is very much in support of the St. Elmo restaurant. We brought some of those small plates to Fishers, but we needed an

Agave Margarita, Pop’s Old Fashioned, the Journeyman Manhattan and the Elmo “Since we’ve been open in Fishers our sales Cola, a house favorite that mixes Coke or have exceeded our expectations,” Huse Diet Coke with an infusion of bourbon, says. “Anybody can open a restaurant, but maraschino cherries and vanilla beans. keeping one open is the difficult part. The original, 3,000-square-foot 1933 Lounge above St. Elmo opened back in 2011 as a “We wanted upscale and sophisticated,” he speakeasy-style concept with a small food says. “Some people thought that a 21-andmenu as well as classic and house cocktails. over place would be risky for the suburbs, but we felt like there were enough family “What has stuck out in my mind is the places to go to and that people want to escape to an adult experience that isn’t a amount of thank you’s we’ve received in

The restaurant is slated to open in February. “Fishers officials have done a great job attracting businesses, and they make it easy and streamlined for outside investors to come in for projects,” Huse says. “It’s a great community to work with. The different agencies work well together here to make things happen.” 1933 Lounge by St. Elmo is located at 9707 District North Drive, Suite 1120 in Fishers. FRITZ IN FISHERS OWNER TALKS MORE THAN 35 YEARS OF SERVING OTHERS Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Ron Wise
Fritz Kreutzinger can still recall when the population of Fishers sat at a modest 1,600. It was the early 1980s, and Kreutzinger was in the beginning stages of opening his used car dealership to the public on 116th Street at the time. He saw potential in the area despite its small number of residents and businesses and had a feeling he could flourish with a family-friendly, customeroriented approach to business.
After officially opening Fritz in Fishers as a used car dealer in 1983, Kreutzinger has stuck by that approach and hasn’t looked back for almost four decades. “A lot of people have come in and told us we’re the last standing pillar of the old downtown Fishers,” he says. “The old barber shop’s gone, the Nickel Plate is gone, and all the surrounding properties are gone but we don’t plan on going anywhere. They say Fishers is an entrepreneurial city, and a lot of people say I was the first business entrepreneur in downtown.” FEBRUARY 2020
Upon graduating from Purdue in 1975 with a degree in economics, Kreutzinger, an Indy native, decided to draw on his background with cars and his entrepreneurial spirit to start his professional career. “My dad had a gas station, and I grew up around cars,” he recalls. “When I got out of school I realized I’d always been an independent guy and provided for myself. I knew about automobiles and wanted to be my own boss.” Kreutzinger ran a Butler Toyota dealership
at 96th Street and Keystone Avenue as a sales manager from 1979 to 1982, during which he became familiar with Fishers through a friend who ran a two-car repair garage in the area. In 1983, with one additional employee who handled auto detailing and clean-up work, Kreutzinger struck out on his own and opened Fritz in Fishers to the public.
“With our mechanical and cosmetic departments we now have 20-plus employees including my son Kyle now, and we’ve tried to stay as family-friendly as possible,” he explains. “We have some old gas pumps and some memorabilia and stuff in the building, and people will tell us the vibe here puts them at ease. That’s what we try to do.” Fritz in Fishers was formerly located across the street from where it now sits on East 116th Street until 1992, and the city’s government offices sat opposite the dealership. At that time, Kreutzinger exchanged property with the city, whose leaders decided they needed bigger facilities as Fishers’ commercial and residential development continued apace. Consequently, he moved his office into the former Fishers administrative offices and purchased the adjacent acreage to use as his car lot, and as Fritz in Fishers grew over the years, Kreutzinger observed the explosive growth of the area around him firsthand. As his dealership began to grow back in the 80s, Kreutzinger wanted to help Indiana’s used car industry on a bigger scale and helped to establish the Indiana Independent Auto Dealers Association, on which he still serves as board chairman. The organization represents
used car dealers throughout the state and maintains a presence with the state legislature. “The association has helped raise the quality of the industry, which has been a personal goal of mine,” says Kreutzinger, who for the past five years has also served as the used car representative on the governorappointed Indiana Motor Vehicle Advisory Board, which consults with Secretary of State Connie Lawson regarding rules and regulations for the auto industry. “I’m also the only used car dealer ever associated with the New Car Dealers Association, as an associate member.” Kreutzinger and his staff keep 120 to 150 used cars in stock at any given time — a far cry from when he was just starting out and that number was between 10 and 12. Nevertheless, he says his approach to customer service remains the same as it ever was. “We’ve always tried to treat people like we’d want to be treated, and that works out 99.5% of the time,” Kreutzinger says. “Our repeat business has been great. We’ve had families where we’ve sold them 10 or 15 cars. Kids come back telling us they bought their first car from us, and now they’re buying a car for their family. I think that says a good deal about us.”

CARING & SHARING 100+ WOMEN WHO CARE HAMILTON COUNTY SETS HIGHER FUNDRAISING GOAL FOR 2020 Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided by Ellie Sophia Photography & 100+ Women Who Care
For 13 years, Mary Beth Woehrle lived in Greenwood where she was involved with 100+ Women Who Care Johnson County, an organization that benefits local 501(c)(3) charities. When she moved to Noblesville in 2007, she was eager to join 100+ Women Who Care Hamilton County but found that such a group didn’t exist. So Woehrle rallied some friends and got one going. “We, as moms, don’t just want to stay busy driving our kids around to their games and events,” Woehrle says. “We want to make an impact in our community, and this organization is a great way to do that.” She acknowledges, however, that between work, motherhood and life management, women are often stretched thin. As a result it can be difficult to carve out time for charity work. That’s what makes 100+ Women Who Care so great. All they ask is for women to gather quarterly for onehour meetings.
The meetings are structured the same way each quarter. Any member who is current in their giving can nominate their choice of a local 501(c)(3) organization registered within Hamilton County. All nominations go into a hat and three are pulled out. Representatives from the three finalists then give a brief, informal presentation that describes their charity’s purpose and mission. The group asks follow-up questions and then vote to determine which non-profit should receive the donation for the quarter. “Each person writes a $100 check right then and there to the non-profit chosen, to make a collective, impactful donation,” Woehrle says. The first 100+ Women Who Care Hamilton County meeting took place in August 2017. It started out with three co-founders Woehrle, Dana Randall, and Carolyn Deines - each reaching out to their own circles of women to encourage participation. It has since grown as members have told friends, colleagues and neighbors about the group. “It’s been a grassroots, word-of-mouth kind of thing rather than a strategic marketing FEBRUARY 2020
plan,” Randall says. “It’s been great, though we would like to continue to spread the word that we exist.” Currently, 45 women come consistently. Though they ask women to commit to a year at a time, they do not track the giving. If someone comes at the start of the year but doesn’t make it to another meeting until the end of the year, that’s okay. They also allow the annual $400 membership amount to be split among friends, colleagues or siblings. “We want to bring in as much money as we can for charities, yet at the same time we want to make this simple to manage for women to be a part of,” Randall says. Since May the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation has matched donations for up to 50 percent of total dollars raised (up to a $5,000 match). “Now, when a group wins they not only win the 100+ Women Who Care donations but they also get a grant from this foundation,” Woehrle says. “For nonprofits, especially those still in their infancy stage, to get awarded a $5,000 donation and have it matched by 50 percent is huge for growth,
and makes a huge impact in the types of services these organizations can provide.” In the past 2.5 years, 100+ Women Who Care Hamilton County has recognized ten charities and donated more than $50,000. They have donated to organizations such as HAND, Inc., which addresses the housing needs of low- and moderate-income individuals, families and senior citizens, the Fishers Youth Assistance Program, which strengthens youth and families through community involvement, Redemption Rescue, a foster care program for sick, injured and abandoned animals, and the Megan S. Ott Foundation, which provides care packages for women suffering from breast cancer. “The beauty of this group is that we are always hearing about charities we didn’t know existed and all of these great things happening in Hamilton County,” Woehrle says. The group’s goal for 2020 is to have more women from surrounding areas like Westfield, Noblesville and Carmel take part, in order to impact charities in those communities as well. They are constantly striving to get 100 women to consistently attend quarterly meetings. “Still, that’s not the end zone for us,” Woehrle says. “After all, the group is called 100+ Women. We’d love to continue to grow.” Each quarter the group meets at 7 p.m. around the middle of the month at the Delaware Township Community Center in Fishers. Meetings in 2020 are slated for February 12, May 13, August 19 and November 18. Guests are welcome. “Ultimately we just want more people involved because the more that are involved, the greater the impact on the community,” Randall says. Rise’n Roll
POPULAR AMISH BAKERY OPENS NEW LOCATION AT THE YARD IN FISHERS Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Indiana doughnut lovers have no doubt heard of Rise’n Roll Bakery at some point. The Amish bakery has gained a cult following over the years for its tasty treats.
Rise’n Roll’s history started in 2001 in Shipshewana, Indiana. A young Amish couple sold baked goods with recipes handed down in their family for several generations. The first location opened in 2004 in Middlebury, Indiana as they continued to perfect their recipes.
In December, the popular shop opened its first location in Fishers at The Yard at Fishers District. Owner Casey McGaughey knew The Yard would be a perfect fit for the shop.
The couple sold the company in 2009, but the Amish recipes still remain in the store’s products, and it shows in the taste of the doughnuts and other treats.
“The buzz around The Yard drew me in,” he says. “The food-centric idea here is incredible. I thought being a part of this would help position us well to introduce Rise’N Roll to the northside. This was my first choice and where I always wanted to be.”
McGaughey, who’s family owns MCL Restaurants, had been interested in potentially opening a bakery or doughnut shop on his own before a friend introduced him to Rise’n Roll. After visiting the Greenwood location and trying the products, he quickly realized why they are such a big hit. FEBRUARY 2020
“It is a unique experience here because it is a doughnut shop, but it is also a market,” McGaughey says. “Everything we have, I feel, is the best version of that. We have doughnuts, of course, cheese balls, which are the best I’ve ever had in my life, jams and preserves, cookies, candy crunch and other desserts, salsas, noodles, you name it.” The doughnut shop officially celebrated its grand opening with its first customer receiving free doughnuts for a year and the first hundred customers receiving a free dozen doughnuts. What stands out for most people who go to Rise’n Roll for the first time is, of course, the doughnuts. McGaughey says that is by design and the taste and quality cannot be overstated.
“What makes us so unique to start off, of course, is the doughnuts,” McGaughey says. “It all starts there. Honestly, the flavor of the doughnuts is so unique. People eat it and say they have never had anything like it.” Rise’n Roll’s most popular item is the Cinnamon Caramel Donut. The classic doughnut is covered in a caramel sauce and generously dusted with cinnamon sugar. The shop has plenty of specialty items as well like the Crunch Bismark Donut, Apple Fritter, Peanut Butter Filled Donut and much more. For those coming for the first time, McGaughey has a few recommendations. “If any doughnuts look good to you or have been your favorite, just try our version of it,” he says. “Obviously, you have to try the Cinnamon Caramel Donut if it is your first time there. We also have Lemon Cookies that are really unique and delicious cinnamon rolls, too. There is a ton of variety here.” The Fishers location also includes coffee from Hubbard & Cravens and Nitro cold brew as well as drinks from Circle Kombucha. McGaughey’s store also offers authentic cream milk. A relative of McGaughey’s is a dairy farmer in Sheridan and the milk is made at the creamery there. The community response has already been sky high for the doughnut shop early on. Several hundred customers gathered at the store for the opening, with the line well out the door. Even before that, the soft openings with family and friends were jampacked, too. McGaughey is thankful for the response and excited for more people on the northside to experience Rise’n Roll. “I’m excited for people to come that are trying us for the first time,” he says. “It is really cool to see people experience something that, hopefully, they are going to love for a long time. The community response has been great already.”
The look of the restaurant matches what most Rise’n Roll Bakery stores look like inside. Still, franchisees do have some say in the aesthetic of their store and the ability to make it unique. For the Fishers location, McGaughey got in contact with local artist and HSE alum, Koda Witsken. Witsken has been commissioned to paint several murals in 2020 at The Yard. For Rise’n Roll, she completed two murals inside the store that customers can see on the walls to the left and right when they walk in. One mural, in particular, is a nod to Rise’n Roll’s Amish beginnings and depicts a brightly colored horse and buggy with a sunset in the background.
Overall, McGaughey is excited to finally be in Fishers and plans to partner with the community for events in the future, too. Already, Rise’n Roll Fishers offered a portion of proceeds in honor of the late K9 Harlej and presented a $1,000 check to the Fishers Police Department K9 Program.
responders so far and that will still be a main focus this year. We definitely plan to be involved as much as possible.”
Rise’n Roll Bakery is located at 9705 Fishers District Drive at The Yard in Fishers. They are open Monday through Saturday “Koda is very talented,” McGaughey says. from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and closed on “We wanted to bring authentic art inside the Sundays. IT’S A DATE! 6 VALENTINE’S DAY DATE NIGHT IDEAS Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, you probably fall into one of two buckets - prepared or unprepared. There’s a few things to remember when it comes to the love that surrounds this heart-filled day. Valentine’s Day is just that, just another day. So don’t put too much pressure on yourself when you are trying to plan. Anytime you get to spend with that special person should be enough. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be a great day or night! But if you are still working out the details of how your day of cupid will go down, here’s a few ideas to get you started.
1. GAME NIGHT As kids, we tend to think of game night as a family thing to do. But why not play just as couples? Sometimes we all need time to unwind and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun. A little friendly competition can really create some friendly tension between you and your partner. There are a lot of breweries and coffee shops that could make this an easy night out and a lot of them have game libraries to use so you don’t need to bring your own, unless you want to. If staying in, grab a charcuterie tray, some champagne and your favorite board game and enjoy some one-on-one time. FEBRUARY 2020
2. COOKING CLASS A couple that cooks together, stays together, right? Or eats well together! Check out local cooking schools or even local cooking stores for special classes just for Valentine’s Day. Many of them have classes all year round but add a few more during this time of year. The best part about this is that you’ll have a great dinner at the end of the night and probably a few drinks in between. This is also a great one if you are open to doing something NOT on Valentine’s Day. They often have many options around this time and if you are flexible with dates you might be able to find just the right menu!
3. FONDUE AT HOME It seems like fondue restaurants are always the first to book up this time of year but if you are into fondue, it can be done at home too! Order a fondue set if you don’t already have one and purchase pre-cut food items so you don’t have to do a ton of work. Light a fire, lay out some pillows to sit on and pour a couple glasses of wine and enjoy yourself. This is also a fun night for the family if you don’t have a sitter! 4. A STAY AWAY If you think about it at least a little in advance, book a night at a hotel for you and your loved one. Maybe choose a place a little nicer than you might normally stay or try a new spot! Feel free to select one with enticing amenities. Enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant downstairs, a couple’s massage in the spa or a drink at the bar before heading back up to bed. If you are the more quiet type, maybe order room service, rent a movie and cozy into bed. Even enjoy sleeping in the next morning. There’s so many options with a quick night away! 5. P LANETARIUM OR STARGAZING Almost everyone loves looking up at the stars. There’s something about that great, big open sky that is so intriguing. Depending on the weather, you might grab a blanket (or two) two chairs or the bed of a truck, a warm winter cocktail and just look up. There are some really neat apps out there that help you identify the constellations. Or, if you both know them, make a game of who can find the most or the quickest. If sitting outside isn’t in the cards, you might check out a local planetarium (if you have one) where you can spend the evening. 6. VISIT A MUSEUM There are so many museums these days for kids and adults alike. But if you have kids, how often do you visit without them? It’s funny to think of going to a kids’ museum or a history museum in the evening without kids, but believe me, there’s a lot of fun to be had! Experience things without your kids pulling on you, or, if you don’t have kids, pick a place you might not have visited before. Sometimes there are even special evening events. Have a happy Valentine’s Day! FEBRUARY 2020

“A lot of the historians are retirees so they do a lot of genealogical work and more sedentary stuff, but when I got the position I wanted to get out in the community, so I do a lot of public programs,” he explains. “I go to schools, retirement homes and service clubs — anybody who wants a program to talk about, I’m there to be a resource and provide information.” Born and raised in Zionsville, Heighway studied history as an undergrad at Western Kentucky and finished his master’s degree at Utah State University.

“One of the official designations that we have as county historians is that we are one of the people that a developer has to contact before doing a construction project, with archaeologists and the historical societies,” Heighway adds. “So I’m constantly getting emails from people who need me to sign off before they start building.” Heighway says researching events, timelines and even individuals down through history has gotten somewhat easier in the digital age, as many local records and county newspapers are scanned and posted online. “One of the big things I’m trying to do as a researcher is find stories that haven’t been told before,” Heighway says. “There’s a lot of stuff about William Conner and the settlement of the county, but I’ve been looking into more oddball type of history.” One such oddball topic is the White River Serpent, about which Heighway recovered several newspaper articles
from the 1890s. Apparently several locals claimed to have spotted a 12-foot creature with a forked tail splashing in the White River. He’s researched and written about a local grave-robbing scandal that occurred around 1900, the first Chinese immigrants who came to Hamilton County in 1883, and the Fishers-based Battle of Mudsock in 1881, which made national headlines, among many other local subjects. “Sometimes it takes going down to the courthouse and looking through law records for those subjects that weren’t covered in newspapers for example,” Heighway adds. “Or I’ll go to one of the genealogical websites to get background on an individual. And some of my time is spent looking at old stories and possibly proving them false. That’s just as important as discovering new pieces of history that have never had light shed on them.”

The bikeability of Indianapolis offers a great way to both enjoy the warmer months and commute easily through the city, and one of the biggest contributors to biking culture in Indy is LoKe Bicycles. Based out of Fishers, LoKe is a community staple that has been offering personal, local, bicycle sales and repairs since 2013 and are looking to continue their history of serving Indy’s biking community this year. Since its opening, LoKe has occupied the same space in Fishers off 116th and Brooks School Rd. In April, LoKe made the move into a new location in the heart of downtown Fishers on the first floor of the new Spark Apartments building. With a new location comes excitement and new opportunity, and the owner of LoKe, Jim Moffitt, has high hopes for what the store could be.

Priding itself on selling and servicing quality bicycles, LoKe distinguishes itself from other shops by taking the time to learn the “Our shop has changed dramatically since needs of each customer and then doing we first opened,” he says. “When we first whatever it takes to meet those needs.
