Since becoming Mayor in 2015, just as the city was transitioning from a town, my team has been dedicated to making Fishers the best place to live, work, play and learn. In 2017, we were thrust to the national stage by being named No. 1 best place to live in America by Money Magazine. In Fishers, we strive to be a smart, vibrant and entrepreneurial city, and, as you get settled, I hope you find these values throughout our great community. Smart. Progressive and proactive steps are taken throughout the city to ensure Fishers develops in a purposeful and thoughtful way. As a fast-growing community, it’s important that we think about the long-term sustainability of our city, and that includes creating highquality neighborhoods, world-class parks and attractive commercial centers.

component of vibrancy lives within the dozens of free community events our Fishers Parks & Recreation host each year. From the Summer Concert Series to Fishers Farmers’ Markets to Boo Bash and Winter Wonderland, there’s something for everyone. Entrepreneurial. At the heart of Fishers is a spirit and culture of innovation. Our community continuously leads the charge for innovation whether it’s through Launch Fishers and the Indiana Internet of Things Lab or through modernizing city processes. The City constantly challenges the status quo in order to continually make our city more efficient and effective — meaning a quality hometown for you without the big-city cost. Whether you find your corner of Fishers in your own neighborhood, at a community event or within your social circle, we’re glad you are here and hope you continue to seek opportunities to get involved and embrace all that Fishers has to offer.

Vibrant. Efforts to bring vibrancy to every corner of Fishers live within its neighborhoods — whether they’re one or 35 years old. Creating a strong I hope to see you #AroundFishers. sense of place, and of pride, in our community is achieved through being Yours in service, thoughtful with quality, longevity and adaptability in mind. They include a separate children’s message for elementary students during the sermon time. Sermons usually are systematic preaching through one entire book of the Bible at a time. Founder Marie Maher

Local Mom’s Website Connects Parents of Children With Special Needs to Qualified Babysitters Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Two years ago, Marie Maher received an official diagnosis from doctors that her son, Yves, had autism. The diagnosis explained what she thought to be behavioral issues with her son, but it also left Maher with more questions and much to learn. Prior to the diagnosis, Maher was struggling to find babysitters that could watch Yves, along with her daughter Luella, while she and her husband went out for a date

night or when events came up. It left the Mahers in a tough position.

a date night or anything like that. Then we got his diagnosis and everything changed.”

“We were having behavior issues with him simply because we didn’t know what was going on,” Maher says. “We would always get calls from our sitters asking us to come home. They just didn’t know how to handle it. We avoided going out at all because we thought we had a kid with behavior issues and no one wanted to watch him. I couldn’t relax when I went out for anything. My husband and I would go months without

For Maher, it was an eyeopening moment. At the time, Maher was running a networking website in which she helped connect babysitters looking for work and parents looking for a sitter to watch their children. With more than 500 sitters listed on her site, she began interviewing new sitters that might be able to watch her son. She quickly realized how the conversation with these sitters

2019 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE / 21

shifted once she mentioned that Yves had autism. “The moment I would say that my son has autism I would see this person change and get very uncomfortable,” Maher says. “I would text or call them later and never hear back. I started to realize that we needed a different kind of babysitter.” At the same time, Maher’s son began ABA therapy sessions. As Maher talked with the ABA therapists, she quickly realized that many of them wanted to babysit for parents of children

with autism, but they were not allowed to provide that service for kids that attended their center and didn’t know how to connect with other families outside of ABA therapy.

Come on in!

“That is when I had my light-bulb moment,” Maher says. “I thought, ‘Maybe there is an ABA therapist, a speech therapist or a nursing student somewhere else that I could ask to babysit.’ That is when I decided to make the shift in my website and start focusing instead on getting babysitters for the special needs community.” Synapse Sitters was born. Maher’s new business is an online networking community that provides qualified candidates for those parents looking for babysitters. Sitters use the site to member, which lists them as •become Just awomen available in the network, and parents use the site for a monthly fee to find and •choose Personal the right trainer sitter for their child.

For parents, membership costs $29.95 a month, and families can cancel the membership at any time. The

greatest relief of the process is that Synapse Sitters is not a placement agency. Instead, parents and sitters get connected through the site, meet, talk and mutually decide if they want to work together while agreeing on dates, times and pay rate. “Running a business is hard, but we’ve heard from many parents that appreciate the service and that means a lot,” Maher says. “Everyday I go through our sitter candidates, reach out to employers and verify their education. We also try to monitor the messaging going on between parents and sitters. We are working on ways to get a mobile app going, so it will be more like instant messaging. We can’t fill the gap for everyone, but we can certainly try.” Yves, who is now six years old, like any other child, has his own quirks and interests. “He is obsessed with vacuum cleaners,” Maher says. “The first thing he will say to you when he meets you is, ‘Hello, my name is Yves. What kind of vacuum do you have?’ He loves logos of any kind, too. He is starting to realize that vacuum cleaners have logos and model numbers, and he can tell you the model numbers of his favorite vacuum cleaners.” His excitement has led to many vacuum-themed birthday parties. It also sparked an idea for Maher when she was asked to run for Best Buddies of Indiana Champion of the Year in 2018. While thinking of fun ways to raise money for the campaign, she thought about her son’s birthday one year and the time a friend made shirts that said “Yves Vacuum Sales & Service.” Maher decided to have more of the shirts made with the profits going to the Best Buddies of Indiana campaign. “The shirts sold like crazy,” she says. “My goal was to raise $1,000 and, in three weeks, we raised almost $1,100 for the Best Buddies campaign.”

While Maher did not win the Champion of the Year, her campaign raised more than $6,000 for the cause. Overall, Synapse Sitters has not only changed the lives of others but Maher’s family as well. She utilizes sitters from her site and says it has made a significant impact in her home. “My husband consistently tells me that Synapse Sitters is the best thing I’ve ever done for our marriage,” Maher says. “We have three sitters that we can call on at any time. I rarely miss any meetings or events now. We don’t get calls in the middle of our date nights anymore, and my kids are happy when I get home. It has been night and day, just from my own personal experience.” For more information on Synapse Sitters and how to become a member, visit them online at SynapseSitters.com or email them at hello@synapsesitters.com.

CREW CARWASH DEBUTS NEW XPRESS INTERIOR CLEAN SERVICE Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided

Have you ever wanted to get the inside of your car professionally cleaned but realized with frustration that you didn’t have hours to spare for sitting and waiting at a car wash facility? Crew Carwash’s new Xpress Interior Clean service on Tegler Drive in Noblesville provides an answer to that dilemma — an eight-minute answer, to be exact. “We’ve always concentrated on the outside

of the car for the last 40 years, and it’s exciting to get back to the inside with this innovative approach,” says Sally Grant, the executive vice president of Crew Carwash whose grandfather founded the company back in 1948 in Fort Wayne. The approach Grant refers to is simple yet effective. The company installed a conveyor belt that runs the length of the new building, which sits separate from the exterior car wash, allowing the staff to continually hand-clean the cars that 26 / 2019 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE

enter — up to four at a time. Vacuums that hang from the ceiling, towel warming and floor mat cleaning stations and rolling bins for clean and used towels all facilitate Crew’s quick interior cleaning process, and customers can relax in a space near the end of the conveyor belt that includes chairs and a restroom while their car is serviced. The facility allows Crew employees to service up to four cars at once inside the building, and have each and every car finished in about eight minutes.

“We’re very excited about this concept, and I think our customers in Indiana will be excited too — it fits right in with our brand of clean, fast and friendly,” says Grant, adding that the company retained Hamilton Designs and Compass Construction Group for the planning, design and construction process that started last May. Crew held a ribboncutting ceremony on December 20 with Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear in attendance after a soft opening in late November.

“My grandfather, who started the company, is 91 now, and he visited recently to see this new site and was blown away,” Grant says. “He started with full service back in 1948, but then the company got away from it and quit doing full service in 1978. It was neat for him to see this place, and he realized this was a whole new way to do interior cleaning.” The company, which currently operates 31 locations all in the Hoosier state, went to great lengths for research. A few employees, including Jerry White, general manager 2019 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE / 27

at the Noblesville location, traveled to Germany for two weeks to study the type of system that makes the new service work, long before construction on the Noblesville location began. “We’re kind of replicating the process they use over there, with the conveyor belt and high volume, quick-pace car wash system,” White says. “Myself and another employee actually worked on a car wash line there for most of the two weeks. They open up for the day and will typically do 80 cars. It was

associates until we were ready to open, and so we’re all still learning but it’s going great,” she adds. The service is $20 with any exterior wash purchase, and the company is in the process of developing an unlimited Xpress Interior Clean program for a flat fee. Grant says Crew has preliminary plans to open additional Xpress Interior Clean facilities and will monitor the success of the Noblesville location prior to finalizing plans for more locations.

pretty impressive, and it’s fun to bring that type of system here.” Grant stresses that the Xpress Interior Clean service is not a complete interior detailing, but includes windows, floor mats, door jambs, dashboard, console, cup holders and vacuuming.

“We’re going to see how it goes here, and if we see that customers are finding the value of it, we’ve identified about five other locations in the Indianapolis area where we can do the same thing,” Grant says.

Crew Carwash is located at 13425 Tegler “The training was maybe the biggest Drive in Noblesville. Call 317-776challenge throughout this process because we 0936 or visit crewcarwash.com for more didn’t have a place where we could train our information.

Owner Emma Hostetter

Lo c al Boutique Offers Luxury Children’s Clothing Rent als Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photos provided by Josh Brown & The Borrowed Boutique

From the comfort of her own home, Dr. Emma Hostetter launched The Borrowed Boutique three years ago. The family physician and public health doctor had traveled all over the globe working with women and children’s health, witnessing endless cases of health disparities, in underdeveloped countries. Dr. Hostetter decided to take some time off following the birth of her daughter. In her true fashion, Hostetter used the time off not only to care for her newborn but to find new creative outlets.

“I’ve had an entrepreneurial spirit since I was a child, and I always found creative ways to make money like selling candy for a camping trip,” she says. “The first thing that came to my mind was my love for children’s fashion and dressing up my daughter. Then I started to realize how much I was investing in these clothes to have her wear it only once.” After purchasing enough dresses for baby photo shoots, her husband had the lightbulb idea for Emma to start a fashion rental business. Hostetter got to work, making contacts with top children’s fashion design houses and began offering the fancy frocks to a closed 2019 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE / 31

group on Facebook. Friends in the closed group began inviting more friends to the group, and quickly the group swelled to more than 10,000. Word about the fashion rentals spread like wildfire, and soon, Hostetter had filled one closet, then another, then the dining room. It wasn’t long before the business outgrew her house, and she found an office space for a showroom in The Edge Building in Fishers. Some might think the idea of renting highend boutique-style children’s fashion is a little unconventional, but it’s nothing new. “It’s the concept of a shared economy, which has been around for a long time in

many countries,” Hostetter says. “It’s just a different spin on the same old idea. It’s appealing because most customers are practical.” The Borrowed Boutique carries chic designs from Tutu Du Monde, Dolly, Butterfly Closet, Dollcake, Nellystella and PrimaFashions, who makes Disney-themed gowns and many more. The Borrowed Boutique will soon be adding top children’s couture designer Anna Triant fashions to their line.

Fashion from all these designers usually retail for $100 to $200, and some are in the thousands. But you can rent them for as low as $40 or $50. The process is ideal for moms looking for their child’s dress for a wedding or special occasion, photo shoot or even a pageant. Although the majority of the fashions through The Borrowed Boutique are for girls, they also carry a great selection of boys’ fashions. All designs are available online, but you can make an appointment to come in to have 32 / 2019 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE

your child sized. The Borrowed Boutique will ship anywhere in the US, including Alaska and Hawaii. “Around 95 percent of our business is shipped,” Hostetter says. “Word has gotten out that we have one-of-a-kind pieces that customers can’t get anywhere else.” The shop also offers insurance for an additional $5 fee to cover any damages from stains or simple tears.

“Our dry cleaning service is able to handle most stains, and our seamstress is wonderful at repairing simple tears,” Hostetter says. With the tremendous success of the boutique, one might expect that the good doctor has left her lab coat behind, but she hasn’t. Having earned a Master’s degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, her passion for that field is permanent, and she continues to volunteer on mission trips with non-profit groups. Although medicine and fashion are two vastly different fields, Hostetter claims there are more similarities than you might think. “In medicine, you’re working with a body made of systems, and a business is made of systems,” she says. “A huge part of both things is problem-solving. It’s great to be able to do something on the creative side. I love styling kids for magazines and creating wardrobe concepts. I want people to know that just because you went down one path in your life before doesn’t mean you have to stay there. I’m not afraid to work hard and learn new things.” Hostetter incorporates her charitable spirit into the boutique too. The Borrowed Boutique partners with Esther’s Children, a small organization that works to end sex trafficking and restore the lives of those who’ve been affected by it by donating a portion of their profits to their cause. The Borrowed Boutique also donates 100 percent of its profits to Esther’s Children from their Styled to Give events. The events are special photo shoots that The Borrowed Boutique holds for which photographers pay a fee to attend and take photos of fully-styled models. Hostetter is currently working to find a boy’s charity to adopt. Check out The Borrowed Boutique at theborrowedboutique.com. Their showroom is located at 8890 East 116th Street, Suite 290 in Fishers or you can email them at support@ theborrowedboutique.com to make an appointment.

Celebrating Community & Camaraderie In Running Shoes Writer / Lisa Hancock Photos provided by RUN(317)

Entering its fifth year, the 2019 RUN(317) Series is more than just an excuse to log a few miles on Thursday evenings. Jeff Graves, president and founder of Vision Event Management who produces the event, says the series affords participants the opportunity to get re-acquainted with Indy’s unique neighborhoods on a more intimate basis. Since Graves launched the RUN(317) Series in the market five years ago, the event has experienced significant growth. In its inaugural year, more than 900 athletes participated in a single race in Fountain Square to benefit Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. The sophomore year, races in the vibrant districts of Broad Ripple and Mass Ave were added to the calendar. Carmel Arts & Design District and Monument Circle races joined in 2016. Various road work projects precluded a Carmel Arts & Design District course from returning to the 2019 lineup, but Graves announced that The Village of WestClay in Carmel is enthusiastic about being a new host location this year.

Comprising five monthly Thursday evening races in different Indianapolis neighborhoods, the series spans three seasons. Kicking off in May and skipping September, the fifth and final finish line tape falls in October. Participants are encouraged to register early as every race has sold out in advance of race day the past three years. Complementing the 3.17-mile run/walk at each event is an invigorating festival-like atmosphere unique to each respective race community. Neighborhood restaurants, bars and shops are showcased, many of which offer participant specials. A live DJ spins throughout the evening to keep the vibe right and energy high. Yard games like cornhole, jumbo Jenga and giant Connect 4 keep participants engaged during the post party as do various vendors with giveaways and register-to-wins. “RUN(317) is a community of its own,” says Graves, former executive director of the Indy Mini-Marathon and 500 Festival VP of Events. “You’ll see all athletic abilities out on the course, from competitive athletes and recreational runners to first-timers and walkers. 40 / 2019 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE

RUN(317) participants celebrate being active, our communities and each other, unlike any group I have ever witnessed. And they do it all to benefit others.” Since 2014, RUN(317) has raised more than $62,000 for various charities across Indianapolis. Each race has a designated local non-profit. This year’s organizations include Partners in Housing, Energy Krazed, School on Wheels, Kids’ Voice of Indiana, and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. “We’ve offered a substantial selection of free branded premium items and merchandise to purchase over the years so there are a lot of RUN(317) logos on the street,” Graves says. “You’ve heard about Jeep owners having their own wave? It’s like those of us in the RUN(317) inner circle have our own nod. We can’t help but smile, and it’s just the coolest thing to experience.” Registration is open now. Participants can sign up for a single race, the three-race mini-series or the five-race full series. Those registering for the 3 or 5-race series receive a limited-edition, pocketed super soft hoodie, in addition to the individual race perks of a commemorative medal

which triples as a refrigerator magnet and a bottle opener, a coupon valid for a free 6-inch Penn Station sub, a RUN(317) collector sticker and two complimentary craft beers from Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co. for those age 21 or older. Free water and Gatorade are also offered as nonalcoholic alternatives. Scotty’s Brewhouse returns as the event’s title sponsor, with Athletic Annex and Brooks Running offering participants the option to upgrade to the VIP Experience. Graves, a Ball State alum who launched Vision Event Management in 2006 as a firm specializing in the planning and logistics for active lifestyle events of all sizes says it’s critical for promoters to offer events that differentiate themselves from others. Graves adds that establishments along the courses enjoy the patronage of the athletes who often eat, drink and shop post-race. “RUN(317) Thursday night runs support an early physical kick-off to the emotional

‘hurry up weekend and get here’ thoughts we often have,” Graves adds. “Get out, get active and pay it forward in the community. Feeling good about yourself makes it that much easier to contribute at work on Friday. And if you cannot compete for whatever reason, you can always make an impact by volunteering.” This year’s race schedule includes The Circle on May 16, Broad Ripple on June 13, Mass Ave. on July 18, The Village of WestClay in Carmel on Aug. 29 and

Fountain Square race on Oct. 10. There are also side competitions such as “Beat the Clock” and “Fastest Runner,” where participants can challenge themselves to win additional prizes. To register or get complete details on RUN(317), including past year photos, volunteer information, competition rules, VIP upgrade and an archive of race results courtesy of Old National Bank, please visit RUN317.com.

We have been in the lead of using more biology and less chemistry. One of our founders is an Agronomist from Purdue, a soil scientist. He works with the team at TLC and with various manufacturers, distributors and developers of lawn products to find the right products and combinations to build the soil. We are utilizing biology to replace some of the chemistry as we build the soil. Many of the newer lawns have poor soil, a clay-pea gravel mix that leaves a lot to be desired. These soils have low nutrient value as well as they bind up the nutrients that tend to be there. Just using organic fertilizers doesn’t help reduce the amount of nitrogen being put on the lawns, it’s just another form of it. With the use of only organic fertilizers, we still have that whole nitrogen cycle which ends up with ammonification and nitrates into the water system. By using biosolids and a variety of things like kelp, humic and fulvic acids, amino acids, mychorrhizea, micro nutrients and other ingredients we are increasing the microbial activity in the rhizosphere. When we increase the microbial activity we are getting nutrients released from the soil which are then more readily available to the turf plant through its root system. The soil and the root system both have a negative charge, and when we can break off these nutrients with a positive charge from the soil they can then be taken up by the root system. By adding carbon into the soil we increase the surface area where these nutrients can also be stored and not just passed through the soil. Some of these products also cause small microfractures of the soil particles leading to more surface area to hold onto these nutrients as well. We practice IPM, Integrated Pest Management, and with our low pressure, low volume applications we can reduce our pesticides as well. We have a great team. Many of our team members have been with us for more than five years, up to 25. We have seven guys with more than 25 years of experience in the field.
