The Keep Fishers Beautiful initiative brings together residents, homeowner’s associations, local businesses and organizations to support the vibrancy of our city and neighborhoods each year. This year, Keep Fishers Beautiful took place Saturday, April 13. Residents showed up for the annual Spring Service Day at Ritchey Woods, City Recycling at Billericay Park as well as many more group volunteer projects around Fishers. This year, 169 individuals volunteered 318 total hours at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve, and nearly 1,600 total cars came through City Recycling Day. About 50 volunteers also donated their time at Brooks School Park, Cheeny Creek, Billericay Park and Heritage Park for Keep Fishers Beautiful. Take a look at the photo recap of some of the projects from the event.

provide equal attention to everyone, regardless of fitness level.

Kristen Katibah and Jennifer Paynter say Burn Boot Camp can change your life, and they count themselves as proof of the fitness center’s impact.

Burn Boot Camp’s offerings primarily are for women, although it also has co-ed camps.

After all, they were regulars at a Burn Boot Camp themselves when they met and fell in love with Burn’s philosophy and environment. They then decided to team up, make fitness their careers and open their own locations. Now franchise partners, Katibah is the co-head trainer at the Fishers Burn Boot Camp, and Paynter is the head trainer in Carmel.

“We cater to everyone who comes in the doors, regardless of what fitness level they are at,” Paynter says. Each’s day’s camps, led by a certified personal trainer, focus on a different theme or part of the body. But all workouts include high-energy exercise and music. And they all ensure that everyone is an active participant, even those who need to modify their workouts.

Burn Boot Camp opened in Fishers in January 2018 with Carmel following in February 2019. The Fishers location already has a large community, and the Carmel facility is growing steadily — success the franchise partners say is a credit to the effect that Burn Boot Camp’s programs can have on those who take part.

“It’s personal training in a group setting,” Katibah says. “We’re not just leading from the front and barking out orders. We’re getting side by side with someone and giving everyone a few minutes with us to have their own victory, to give them the chance to do what they didn’t think they could do before.”

“We are a community of women who support each other, lift each other up and inspire strength in and out of the gym,” Katibah says.

The result, the trainers say, often is a transformation that goes beyond anything a scale can measure. Burn Boot Camp has drawn women of all ages and sometimes from multiple generations in one family. Clients share their success stories on the gym’s “Transformation Wall” with victories ranging from weight loss to improved outlook on life.

Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C. — where Katibah and Paynter met — the gym’s services revolve around 45-minute classes, known as camps, that aim to

“Little things mean so much,” Paynter says. “Like someone believing in them and supporting them when they may not believe in themselves.” Burn Boot Camp offers childcare at no charge during visits, as well as one-onone nutrition coaching. Both the Fishers and Carmel locations offer free camps on Saturdays. Six, 12 and 18-month packages are available. Those visiting Burn Boot Camp for the first time can also take advantage of a free 14-day “test drive.”

POPULAR LOCAL DUO NEARS 25 YEARS OF PERFORMING IN HAMILTON COUNTY & BEYOND Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing . Photographer / Amy Payne

efore Lisa Rae Hodge had celebrated her 21st birthday, she was a huge fan of Dave Edmonds when he played with the band The Oliver Syndrome. It was the spring of 1995. Hodge, who was working several jobs at the time, approached Edmonds after a concert and told him that she would love to sing with him sometime. “I can harmonize and play tambourine,” she offered. Though she was auditioning for another band, she knew she’d prefer to play with Edmonds if given the chance. They became fast friends, despite being polar opposites. As it turns out, their yin-yang dynamic played out beautifully on stage.

When they first started, Edmonds sported dreads, Hodge had a perm, and they collaborated on a part-time basis. Before long, however, they were receiving so many requests for gigs that Edmonds left The Oliver Syndrome, Hodge quit her jobs, and “Dave & Rae” transitioned to full-time performers. Initially, the paired played primarily bars and for a solid decade spent a ton of time in Bloomington playing at places like the Bluebird Nightclub. In fact, one night they broke a 21-year record at the Bluebird for number of attendees — somewhere around 1,500. “People were lined up around the block,”

“He’s the introvert. I’m the extrovert. He’s the mechanic. I’m the driver. He’s the musician. I’m the entertainer,” Hodge says. “Or as Dave’s son tells me, ‘Dad plays the guitar. You shake your booty.’” 10 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atFishers.com

Hodge says. “I remember crying on the way home, I was so overwhelmed by the support.” Hodge has gravitated toward music ever since she was a little girl, singing her first song in church at 19 months old. “Mom said the words were not discernible but that my pitch and tune were spot on,” Hodge says. Edmonds (no relation to Babyface though he fields that question frequently) started playing guitar at age 12, joined some neighborhood bands and was playing regularly by age 18. In his free time, Edmonds, who used to play Mozart on his piano, enjoys riding his

motorcycle and, above all, loves being a dad to his son Oliver. Hodge, who has been married to her husband, Bobby, since 1997, enjoys yoga and golf. Both Edmonds and Hodge like to read though their interests vary. “He reads Aristotle while I devour whatever’s on the best-seller list,” says Hodge with a chuckle. Performing folk, funk, pop, rock, dance, country and sing-a-longs, Dave & Rae are masterful at entertaining the crowd with everything from Janis Joplin and the Beatles to Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift. They take audience requests and belt out staples such as “Sweet Caroline,” “Me & Bobby McGee,” “Oh, What a Night,” “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Jack & Diane.” Though they once dominated the bar scene, now they primarily play weddings, birthday

parties and bar mitzvahs. “At one point, we were doing 40 to 50 weddings a year,” Hodge says. “Now, we’re doing those people’s 40th and 50th birthday parties and their children’s graduations. As we grow older, our fans are growing older with us.”

They also play at corporate events and do a lot for the Indiana Pacers such as FanJam, which celebrates the kickoff of the new season. “We’ve been playing there since it was Market Square Arena,” Hodge says. “We played in the Reggie Miller era and now are playing in the Victor Oladipo and Myles Turner era.” Though they like mixing up their venues, weddings are always special. “They booked us because they’ve shared a memory with us, not because they found us in a phone book,” Hodge says. In fact, this spring they flew out to Arizona to sing at a wedding of someone from their Bloomington Bluebird days. “They wanted Dave & Rae’s music on their special day,” Hodge says. “I love putting a smile on people’s faces.” As the duo approaches their 25th anniversary as a band, their calendar is still full. Summer months are especially busy with outdoor parties and festivals. The band is thankful for their longevity in this industry, and they have no plans to retire. “We’ll keep doing this for as long as people keep coming to see us,” Hodge says. “We’ll be in wheelchairs and walkers still performing.” To learn more or to book the band, visit them online at daveandrae.com for more information.

DeVeau’s School of Gymnastics was founded in 1982 by Joan DeVeau with 185 gymnasts and three instructors in a 5,000 sq. ft. facility. Over the past 35 years, they have moved locations twice and have expanded three times. They now offer gymnastics, ninja training, cheerleading, trampoline, and tumbling from babies all the way up to twelfth grade. Their co-ed preschool program introduces gymnastics and more. “We’re teaching fine and gross motor skills, following directions, waiting one’s turn, as well as colors, shapes, left and right,” says Taryn DeVeau, Joan’s daughter and the gym’s marketing manager. “We’re also teaching kids how to hop, skip, jump, and gallop — not just how to cartwheel.” Though the ninja classes appeal primarily to the boys, girls participate, too. In 2008, the staff at DeVeau’s was proud to send their very own Samantha Peszek to the 2008 Olympics as Peszek had been training at DeVeau’s since age 2. “We’re the only gym remaining in Indiana who has trained an Olympian,” says Taryn, noting that they’ve also produced scores of college scholarship athletes as well as collegiate cheerleaders. “Gymnastics and all of our acrobatic-based sports provide a great foundation for our kids for whatever they choose to do in life,” Taryn says. To accommodate the 300-plus competitive team members, as well as the 1,500 students enrolled in their recreational classes, they recently expanded to a 56,000 sq. ft. building in Fishers and now boast more than 40 instructors. atFishers.com / MAY 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 13

Taryn takes great pride in running the family establishment. Not only do she and her husband Luke Lautzenheiser now own the facility, but her aunt works the front desk. Plus, many of their coaches were former DeVeau’s gymnasts who now have their own children in the program. “Between our coaches and our families that are part of our gym, we truly are a family,” Taryn says. “We want to thank everybody and announce that we are officially open again — back and better than ever!”

BACK THE BADGE RIDE & PRIDE EVENT COMING UP MAY 18 BENEFITTING OFFICER BINH DENNIS Writer / Josh Brown Photography Provided

Last October, Fishers police officer Binh Dennis and his wife were enjoying a ride on his motorcycle in Brown County before a sudden, near-fatal crash. In an instant, Dennis’s life changed.

It has been a long road so far for Dennis and will continue to be. More than anything, the accident has changed his outlook on life. He knows he is lucky to still be alive.

“For me personally, it was a huge mind shift,” Dennis says. “No longer do I take any day for granted. I never used to be a His wife, Mary, was fortunate to sustain deeply religious person. Since the accident only minor injuries. However, the accident though, I wake up every day, say a quick left Dennis with three broken ribs, two prayer, and I am so grateful to be alive. Not to a struggle, sure, but I try to find joy in the mention, traumatic brain injuries. things that I have and the things that I can do. Relationships I have are much more More than six months later, it is a moment important to me now.” Dennis reflects on often. “My first real memory of the accident wasn’t until nearly three weeks later,” Dennis says. “I woke up one day and realized I was in the hospital. I was laying in the hospital bed, taking inventory of everything and realized that my legs were not functioning. I had a lot of questions, I was confused. It was quite the awakening.”

Dennis continues to push through the injuries, and today he is recovering and rehabbing in Fishers. Since he returned home on Dec. 18, the Dennis family has seen nothing but support from the Fishers community and their friends. “That day, I expected to come home and see a few friends gathered,” Dennis says. 14 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atFishers.com

“Instead, it was a couple hundred people standing out on my front lawn, welcoming me home. That in itself was overwhelming for me and seeing the support from the community has been incredible.” Today, Dennis says he is in a good place mentally. He has physical therapy and occupational therapy twice a week. The rehab continues to be a grueling process, but it is paying off and yielding encouraging results. Officer Dennis is now at a point where he constantly feels some sort of sensation in his legs. He has also reported controlled bodily functions as well as regaining some of his core strength. “Every week, it seems like, I get something that gives me a little hope that things are changing and moving in the right direction,” he says. Through it all, Dennis credits his wife, more than anyone, for how far he has come since the accident.

Binh Dennis with his wife Mary.

“I tell people this more often than my wife would probably care for me to say,” he says. “She has been my rock, my advocate and my warrior. She has fought so many battles for me going through all this. If it wasn’t for her, I would not be where I am today.” Dennis, a Fishers police officer for nine years and six years as a firefighter before that, has also seen overwhelming support from his brothers and sisters in blue as well as local law enforcement and firefighters from around Hamilton County. He is frequently visited by Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart and fellow officers and firefighters, something he is always grateful for. The Fishers FOP Lodge No. 199 has organized and is hosting the inaugural Back the Badge — Ride & Pride event on May 18. The event is a motorcycle and car show that will be held at the new Harley Davidson located on Reynolds Drive in Fishers. The registration fee is $25 per vehicle for those participating in the show. The event is cohosted by the Blue Iron Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club and Classic Cars & Nostalgia Motors. There will also be several categories for the motorcycle and car show, including the “Chief ’s Choice Awards” and “Binh’s Choice Awards.” The event is also open to the public. There won’t be an entrance fee for spectators, but donations will be accepted on site. The show will benefit Officer Dennis and his road to recovery. “When I heard that this was being put together, I was so excited,” Dennis says. “It involves things I am influenced by — I drove a motorcycle and have always loved cars. I’m excited to get out in the community again and see a lot of the friends I’ve ridden with. I’m thankful for the love and support I’ve gotten from my coworkers and everyone in the Fishers community. It cannot be overstated. They have been my extended family along the way.” For more information on the Back the Badge — Ride & Pride event, visit fop199.org. Those interested in donating items to the benefit can reach out to admin@fop199.org.

Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart is just one of many co-workers, friends and family that have visited Officer Dennis during his recovery and rehab.

An HSE High School alum and Fishers High School alum went on to become filmmakers in college, and they’re taking their film “Rolling” to the Cannes Film Festival May 14 to May 25. Riley Dismore and Katherine (Katie) Crump lived just a few miles from each other growing up. Even though they attended high schools in the same school district, they didn’t meet until becoming students at Indiana University. Crump grew up surrounded by films. Her parents are filmmakers and she’s helped in the crew in her parents’ films, including helping with promotions. Dismore and her younger sister started making movies when they were kids. Her sister has gone on to become an actress, and Dismore is finishing her Senior year at IU. When Dismore and Crump met, not only were they surprised about their hometown connection, they were equally surprised to discover they shared the same vision. Most obvious was their shared love for filmmaking. Through that, the girls shared their vision of changing the way the industry is dominated by males. “Our main priority is supporting women in film,” Dismore says. “We’re tired of the boys club of filmmakers. Right now, the men dominate the industry. Women can’t because they don’t make equal pay.” The mission to empower women in the film industry was just one driving factor. Dismore endured a traumatic experience that forever changed her and put her on the path to making the award-winning film “Rolling.” Dismore was the victim of a rape during the Fall of 2017. In the weeks and months that followed, she spent time healing at her family’s home in San Antonio. “2018 was a rough year, but I got through it by focusing on my mission to make the world a better place through filmmaking,” Dismore says. The difficult time proved to provide the

inspiration for “Rolling.” The film centers around a young girl who experiences sexual assault. “It really was a project for healing,” Dismore says. “Through this film, I show the confusion that happens with sexual assault. But it also shows that you can be brave and stand up for yourself. The main character is a survivor, dealing with a heavy, complex situation, but her funny personality still shines through.” “Rolling” won the Jury pick award for Best Performance. From there, it’s going to the Atlanta Film Festival and then on to the atFishers.com / MAY 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 17

Cannes Film Festival in May. The festival is not just an opportunity to promote the film. During the two weeks, Dismore and Crump will attend tons of screenings and lots of seminars and classes on writing, directing and cinematography. “Katie loves cinematography, I love writing and directing,” Dismore says. “But I want to learn to do every job on set doing all the things I love — storytelling, art, technology. To be a good leader and director, you have to be the best at all that and learn how to draw emotion and action out of actors.” As a bonus to the film festival, Dismore

was nominated for the Joe Biden Courage Award. As a nominee, Dismore will go to New York City and meet former Vice President Joe Biden. The Courage Award is presented in partnership with the It’s on Us Campaign and the Biden Foundation. “Lots of people in the organization got the opportunity to see the film,” Dismore says. In the meantime, the ladies are already hard at work on their next project. The girls love writing and acting comedy, so they’re working on a comedy called Rebel Girls. “Comedy is my favorite thing to do,” Dismore says. “This film is the funniest thing ever.” Once they finish the comedy, they’ll move on to do a drama, then a documentary about Dismore’s attack. They would also love to make a musical someday. After graduation, the ladies plan to explore all their options. “This summer, Katie and I are heading back to Indy to keep making movies,” Dismore says. “We’ll make this short film in Indy and decide our next move from there.” On the table is doing independent cinema in Los Angeles, which offers many opportunities for women. Dismore says Austin, Atlanta and Albuquerque are also big contenders. Although Crump and Dismore haven’t pitched movies to major studios and production companies, there’s no doubt it’s on the horizon and they’ll be prepared. “It’s hard to do because to pitch a movie, you’ve got to get people to see inside your head,” Dismore says. “You need a good, original, colorful story, special effects and graphics. If you have that, you’ll win. You also need to be able to answer the question, ‘Why this story and why now?’” No matter what their next move is, the ladies are going to keep doing what they love and putting their message out there. “We’re going to show that we believe survivors make better listeners whether they’re the type that wants to talk about their experience or not,” Dismore says. “We’re also going to make it our mission to put women on the crew of our movies.” Look for “Rolling” on Amazon Prime, and follow the Cannes Film Festival at festival-cannes.com.

Wine Women & Shoes Returns May 10 Don Hutchinson and Mark Hosfeld, co-winners of last year’s Shoe Guy of the Year Award.

Gleaners Food Bank is one of the most efficient, productive and caring organizations in Indiana. We are truly blessed that they serve the community like they do. When I donate to Gleaners, whether it is as a volunteer or financially, I know the support directly impacts those who need it most – hungry children and families right here in Central Indiana. My company has a long history in supporting Gleaners. We constructed Gleaner’s current distribution building for Monarch Beverage years ago, and seeing the facility now operated by a devoted team of staff and volunteers moving millions of pounds of food each year so it gets to the people most in need at the right time, is extremely rewarding. Gleaners Food Bank is a great investment, one well worth your time, talent and treasure, and I feel very fortunate to support them through the Shoe Guy program for Wine, Women and Shoes!

SUNRISE CAFE NEARS 17 YEARS OF PROVIDING TOP-NOTCH BREAKFAST & A FAMILY ATMOSPHERE Writer / Josh Brown . Photographer / Brian Brosmer

ou’ve heard the saying, “The early bird gets the worm.” Scott Horsfield has been that early bird for the better part of 34 years, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Most mornings Horsfield, the owner of Sunrise Cafe in Fishers, climbs out of bed around 3 am, showers, gets dressed and arrives at the restaurant between 3:30 and 4 in the morning. That is when his day truly starts. Among his long list of to-dos before the restaurant even opens at 6 a.m. are making Sunrise’s breads, biscuits, gravy, jams and jellies, dressings, slicing up fresh fruit and much more. “Everyone is tired in the mornings,” Horsfield says. “No matter how early it is. The difference is when I physically unlock the front door and walk into this place my adrenaline goes up ten-fold. There are about 500 things I need to do when I get here. A lot of the work goes in way before the customers get here. That challenge drives the passion. People expect top-notch service. So, I want to go out of my way, with a smile on my face, to make it worth their while because I want them to come back.”

Before he and his brother Jim opened the first Sunrise Cafe off Keystone in 1985, Horsfield had never cooked an egg a day of his life. Now, he estimates that he’s cooked nearly six million eggs throughout the last 34 years — most of them, he says, two at a time and around 270 dozen eggs a week. “Now we have some help, especially doing omelets nowadays,” he says. “But I cook most of those. In one sense, it is just eggs, right? But on the other hand, nobody likes them unless they are done right. Everyone likes their eggs a certain way. I take pride in that.”

like family because they all know each other from being in here so often. They are like family to us, too. We’ve watched kids grow up over the years and now their kids are in here working.” When you walk into Sunrise Cafe, there is a good chance, at some point, you will be greeted by those kids — a teenager or young adult. That is by design. While there are several adult cooks, waiters and waitresses and managers that have been with Horsfield for a long time, a good chunk of the staff is young adults in high school or college.

In 2002, Horsfield left the home nest off Keystone and opened the Fishers Sunrise Cafe location. Several factors, he says, went into that decision. “Fishers was the up and coming destination,” he says. “Even then, you had many new families moving in. We just wanted to grab onto that and build it from there. We knew we could do it, but you never know for sure how it is going to go when you open a new spot.” Today, Sunrise Cafe continues to be one of the most popular breakfast spots in Fishers. It hasn’t come without hard work from the Horsfields and the Sunrise staff. More than anything, the Horsfields credit the community response over the years and the faithful customers that come in week after week, citing a family atmosphere at the restaurant. “The community response has been great,” says Scott’s wife, Jenny. “Our customers are atFishers.com / MAY 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 27

On the practical side of a small, familyowned business, hiring high school or college-aged students meant saving money. After all, not everyone can be full-time. But the Horsfields, having kids of their own, always wanted to mentor youth and provide an opportunity for them to learn a strong work ethic and grow into what was most likely their first real job at the restaurant. “The biggest turnover on our staff is the high schoolers, but I always tell them that they have a job for life if they want it,” Scott says.

“The better ones bring over other better ones. The parents might want it to be the first job for their kid too. The younger the better. If they start when they are freshmen or sophomores, then they’ve worked their way up more by the time they are seniors. But they get in here and they see what it takes. It is a huge experience for them.”

“It is what you would cook at home in your own kitchen. You don’t have to search through our menu to find what you want. There are no glorified items, and everything is fresh.”

With so many new restaurants popping up in Fishers, Sunrise Cafe remains a local favorite not only because of the family, community feel but because of the food as well. For those who have been, fast, quality service and a delicious meal are expected.

“Jenny probably knows a large percentage of everyone’s name that comes in, and I could probably tell you what they are going to order before they do,” he says. “Certain people order the same thing every time they come, others come every day and switch it up. Everyone has their favorites.”

“The secret is just hard work,” he says. “Some people call us old, I call us old school. We are fortunate to have a hard working staff as well. You lead by example, that is what we try to do. When we reflect on the last 17 years here, it is pretty cool. But that doesn’t make tomorrow any easier. So you have to be fired up and ready to go each day.”

After 17 years in the Fishers location, Horsfield is still very much passionate about the restaurant. The drive to wake up those early mornings and get behind the grill has not diminished for the owner.

“We just want to thank the community and their families, too,” Jenny adds. “They are so important to us and have been great supporters of us over the years. We can’t thank them enough.”

“I’ve always enjoyed the cooking part,” he says. “I would have a tough time walking around out here in a tie or something. When you are at your busiest, that is when you are tested. Part of it is how I

The menu includes traditional breakfast combinations and specialties like Eggs Benedict, the Breakfast Quesadilla and the Quiche of the Day as well as favorites like the Biscuits and Gravy, French Melt and French Toast. Over the years, Sunrise has also added breakfast bowls and “Create your Own Omelets” options. A lunch menu is also offered. “There is no fluff to our menu,” Jenny adds.

Part of the fun, Scott says, is getting to know the regulars and their favorites.

was brought up, too. I want to take care of people and have their day be better for it. It is my way of serving the community.” As for the success they’ve experienced, he says there really isn’t a big secret to that.

STOP & SHOP MJ LAYNE CELEBRATES 12 YEARS OF PROVIDING UNIQUE ITEMS FOR GEIST & FISHERS SHOPPERS Writer / Julie Young Photographer / Josh Brown

When Michele Lauer’s youngest child started kindergarten, she knew her days of being a stay-at-home mom were over. “I had a dream of opening a store,” she says. “I didn’t know what kind of store it was going to be. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I learned and 10 years later, I’m still here.” MJ Layne Clothing *Jewelry *Home Décor

*Gifts is a charming space that opened in 2007 and primarily focused on home décor items. However, as her business and customer base grew, Lauer scaled back her home décor inventory and incorporated more clothing, jewelry and gift items. This product diversity has made MJ Layne a local destination for any shopper seeking something unique. “I go through the catalogs and get a feel for what is current and then when I go to market, I shop ‘til I drop in order to bring back the best pieces for the store,” she says. 30 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atFishers.com

Lauer recently traveled to Atlanta in order to shop for the holidays. She said “market” can be an overwhelming experience for the uninitiated. There is so much to look at across four buildings (18-21 stories each) that it’s not uncommon for some buyers to get nauseated in the process. “Sometimes I don’t think they stop to eat,” Later says. With well-known brick-and-mortar chains struggling and mom-and-pop shops closing due to the rise in e-commerce, Lauer says

she’s often asked how her business competes and thrives under the pressure. She says no matter how convenient it is to purchase a product online, people always appreciate the opportunity to browse and to find something they can’t find anywhere else. “I am the worst person when it comes to online shopping,” she says. “I order it and then it gets here and I hate it. I always tell myself that I should have gone to the store and looked at it in person. I understand that people get overwhelmed and it’s convenient to shop online, but there is something special about walking into a store and finding something really special.” Lauer says initially her primary customer base included women 40-60, but as more and more teenagers and young girls have come in with their mothers, she’s started carrying items that might appeal to them as well. She says it is not uncommon for family members to come in looking for coordinated outfits for family photos and while she does not carry “mommy and me” styles, they can find something similar that still reflects one’s personal style. “I’ve also been told I have great ‘concert’ shirts as well,” she adds. When Lauer first opened MJ Layne, she wanted to find a location that was not only close to her children’s schools but also near home so that she could balance both work and family. Now that her children are mostly grown, she still loves the location because it is convenient for those other moms who want to shop, but don’t have time to drive all over town. “When I chose my location, I watched how the traffic flowed in and out of here,” Lauer says. “I am right by Kroger, so I know 90 percent of my customers are in the grocery store two-or-three times a week. It’s easy for them to stop in on their way to pick up their carpool or buy some milk and bread.” MJ Layne Clothing *Jewelry *Home Décor *Gifts is located at 11760 Olio Road Ste. 200 in Fishers. Owners Kim and Mark Thaxton

LAZY LABS BAKERY LOCAL COUPLE CREATES HEALTHY, TASTY DOG TREATS Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Lucas Cooley

For Kim and Mark Thaxton, Lazy Labs Bakery is not just a second job after retirement but a natural extension of affection for their three Labrador Retrievers and their passion to provide healthy treats for all dogs. After a successful season at the Fishers Winter Famers Market, the couple’s dog snacks will continue to be available at the farmers market this summer.

The Thaxtons have lived in Fishers since 1991 and, for several years, Kim has been baking treats for her labs Sherman Tank, Ellie May and Caine. Her best friend is a dog breeder and Thaxton often gives her bags of treats for people picking up a new puppy to take home with them.

Thaxton and her husband started the business off slowly at first. In the summer of 2017, they began selling their canine cookies and biscuits at the Noblesville Farmers Market but only once a month. They were pleasantly surprised at the positive reception they received.

“My friend suggested that I start selling them,” Thaxton says. “I was looking for a small job after teaching art for 35 years and, since I wanted to do something that involved our dogs, it seemed to be a good idea.”

“We had no expectations,” she says. “We thought that it would be great if we sold them, but if we didn’t, we knew our own dogs would eat them. Then we started getting lines of people waiting to buy them.”

32 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atFishers.com

This past year they applied to both the Summer and Winter Fishers Farmers Market. Since May of 2018, they man a stall every week with their dog Ellie, rain or shine. All the treats are named for their own dogs or those in the same family tree. Most popular are Gunner’s Peanut Butter Morning Starters, closely followed by Caines Cheddar Cheese Bites and Simon’s Grain-Free Cookies. Any kind of canine enjoys the soft cookielike snacks, but they are especially good for dogs that have allergies, have lost teeth or are picky eaters. Thaxton researched to

feel we fill a niche by providing treats that are good for their dogs.”

Dog lovers don’t have to worry if they run out of treats before farmers market day. They can purchase them from the Lazy Lab Bakery website, too. The “I feel people lose dogs to cancer at early Thaxtons will even deliver free within ages and many pets have allergies,” Thaxton Fishers or at a charge in nearby areas as says. “It might be caused by the food well as ship orders. people are feeding to them. Mother’s Day Gift Ideas For Every Mom

Mother’s Day is coming up May 12th. Do you have plans yet? Have you gotten a gift for your mom? Moms are way too important not to plan for. So, aside from peace and quiet, here are a few ideas on ways to make her smile and remember this Mother’s Day.

Writer / Abigail Hake

For the New Moms

The best gifts for new moms are things that save time and small comforts for sleepdeprived parents like super-soft mix and match pajamas you can find at Soma or a subscription to Shipt or Instacart! They’ll 100 percent appreciate the thoughtfulness of not having to run to the grocery store when they need things for dinner, but the baby is napping.

For the Floral Loving Mom

Does your momma like flowers? Most do, but there are a couple of different options here. For those who like to get their hands dirty in the garden, pop over to your local nursery or gardening and landscaping store and grab a few of their favorite florals. You can purchase pre-potted arrangements or pick out a few flats for your mom to make their own combination. There are also options for those who are less inclined to garden but prefer fresh cut. If that’s the case, check out thebouqs.com who offers really unique florals that she’s sure to want For the Mom Who Needs Quiet to show off. The one thing moms can never get enough of is alone time, and there are many ways to give her that. She might have a preferred massage location or yoga spot that you can grab her a gift card at. Or even better, book her an appointment and prepay! She’s sure to love this alone time especially when everything is taken care of.

to try out a new studio in your area. If they are someone who likes to be outdoors, think about gifting her a season pass to your state park. With a pass, they can explore some really great land throughout the state.

For the Foodie Mom

Treat your mom to a nice Mother’s Day brunch and no dishes afterward. No one wants to do the dishes on Mother’s Day. No. One. So make reservations at her favorite, local restaurant. Enjoy each other’s company while enjoying some great eats too I don’t think many would say no to brunch. And if you can’t make brunch happen, then grab her a gift card to one of her favorite spots to eat around town.

For Any Mom

Maybe she wears jewelry but likes finer pieces. If that’s your mom, find a local jewelry craft store where the ladies there will be able to create something custom or help find you something perfect that’s readily available from their beautiful collection. If you think something a little simpler might work, pick up a monogram necklace. There’s also amazing silhouette necklaces on Etsy if you have time to order. Check out LEILAjewelryshop or GracefullyMadeStudio for unique and heartfelt necklaces. And if you aren’t able to figure anything out and all else fails, chocolate. Chocolates are quick and much loved. Pick out her favorites. Truffles, along with a handwritten card, and love are sure to please. As long as you make sure you give mom a day to relax and let her know how much you appreciate her and love her, you will win her heart over. Moms don’t hear these affirmations often enough, and usually, they are the icing on the cake to make for a perfect Mother’s Day — along with chocolate. 36 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atFishers.com

S.P.O.R.T.S. Celebrates Volunteerism During 2019 Season Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided

For many youngsters throughout the Hamilton Southeastern School District, spring and summer means sports. Scott Spillman, executive director at S.P.O.R.T.S. (Southeastern Program of Recreational Team Sports) on Promise Road near 126th Street and I-69, says his organization, which offers 12 different leagues and 11 sports, is proud of the volunteers who make each season special for as many local youths as possible. “There’s so much value in adults giving back to the youth locally,” Spillman says. “All of the 12 member leagues under the S.P.O.R.T.S. umbrella are volunteer-led, and each one is its own 501(c)(3). So there are a lot of great volunteers doing a lot of heavy lifting to make sure those sports are

the best they can be out on the field.” Founded back in 1987 as a private, nonprofit, community-based youth athletics organization, S.P.O.R.T.S. offers structured leagues in the fall, winter and spring for basketball, football, lacrosse, cheer, soccer and more. All league participants, coaches and board members must reside in the Hamilton Southeastern school district, and ages range from four to 18. Each coach is given training in preparation for their season, and Spillman says S.P.O.R.T.S. is currently welcoming volunteers for board member positions as well as head and assistant coaching spots. “For a lot of our leagues, and especially our niche sports like lacrosse and rugby, coaches go through training modules through the national governing body that 40 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atFishers.com

they report to,” Spillman explains. “With some of our more established leagues like soccer, baseball and softball, we host a coaching clinic before the season going over basic drills, team management, and how to deal with difficult parents.” S.P.O.R.T.S. typically sees more than 10,000 registrations per year, and last year the organization gave out 316 youth sports scholarships to local, in-need kids totaling $33,926. “We’re never going to turn volunteers away,” adds Spillman, who assumed the S.P.O.R.T.S. executive director role in December of 2017. “Some of our teams only have a head coach, and we’d love for all of our leagues to have head coaches as well as assistant coaches. We are also looking for people to help out at the board level — all of the board of directors are volunteers.”

Current S.P.O.R.T.S. Board Vice President Alyssa Anderson began her involvement with S.P.O.R.T.S. back in 2013 when her son enrolled in soccer, and previously served as a league commissioner and eventually league president. “I enjoyed learning about the sport and working to streamline and improve league communication and operations,” Anderson says. “Six months into my presidency it clicked that leading the league was all about the family experience rather than the tasks and logistics. That mindset shift really drove our mission as a league, and we implemented programs and curriculum to support kids, coaches and families during their soccer experience.” Spillman stresses the social and networking benefits that can come from volunteering with his organization, as well as the gratification that comes with helping out on the local level.

“I think people can be amazed at how much fun it can be and how many new people they can meet,” he says. “In this day and age where we’re all so busy and on our phones and computers all the time, you can kind of lose sight of the fact that you can have some great personal interactions out on the ball field or a basketball court.” Interested in volunteering? Visit hsesports. org for more information on volunteer

opportunities and registration details. S.P.O.R.T.S. is located at 12690 Promise Road in Fishers. Fall sports registration, which includes baseball, softball, cheer, cross country, football, soccer and girls volleyball and field hockey, will run through the entire month of May, with a late fee starting June 1. Those interested can register online or bring a completed registration form to the S.P.O.R.T.S. office.

FHS Filmmakers Lauren Higginbotham and Sophie Foley

“Students Ruin the First Amendment” FHS Filmmakers Take Second Place Prize In C-SPAN StudentCam Competition Writer / Kyle Baird Photography Provided

Lauren Higginbotham and Sophie Foley, students at Fishers High School, were recently named as second prize winners in the annual C-SPAN StudentCam Competition for their documentary “Students Ruin The First Amendment.” For the prize, their documentary, which was chosen as one of the top finishers out of several thousand student submissions nationwide, aired on C-SPAN on April 7. The students also received a cash prize of $1,500.

Each year, middle and high school students across the country are invited to submit short documentaries addressing a topic relevant to American culture or society as part of C-SPAN’s annual StudentCam Competition, where a panel of judges comprised of educators and C-Span representatives determine the top finishers who then have their documentaries aired on C-SPAN. The competition has been held annually since 2006, and this year’s submissions centered around the given prompt “What does it mean to be American? Choose a constitutional right, national characteristic or historic event 44 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atFishers.com

and explain how it defines the American experience,” with documentaries covering topics such as Constitutional Amendment rights, social equality and immigration, to name a few. While the competition garners thousands of submissions every year, this particular year featured a record number of both students participating and videos submitted, with 6,318 students from 48 states collaborating to create close to 3,000 documentaries that covered a broad range of subjects. “Over the last 15 years, we’ve had the

privilege of hearing viewpoints on a wide variety of issues directly from young filmmakers across the country,” says C-SPAN’s Manager of Education Relations Craig McAndrew. “This year, students clearly stepped up their approach to deliver thoughtful and diverse responses to our competition theme, which reflect enormous time and effort put into the research and construction of their documentaries.” Locally, Fishers High School students Sophie Foley and Lauren Higginbotham found success in the 2019 StudentCam competition, and are happy with their documentary and the second place finish. “It’s a huge honor,” says Foley, when asked her thoughts on the significance of “Students Ruin The First Amendment” airing on C-SPAN. “We were just having fun with it, but it was amazing to see all our hard work pay off.” The documentary explores what the First Amendment means for life in America today and encourages everyone to engage in healthy and respectful dialogue with one another, taking care to treat First Amendment rights with respect. The film features clips of interviews with Indiana politicians such as Congresswoman Susan Brooks, Attorney General Curtis Hill and even Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness, as they all share their thoughts on the implications of the First Amendment in America and how unique the rights given by it are in comparison to much of the rest of the globe.

Wicked Talent, Wicked Experience

“We really felt the first amendment defines our American Experience because whoever we were talking to or interviewing would have something to say about it,” Higginbotham says. “It was made a long time ago, but it’s still so relevant today.” “Students Ruin The First Amendment,” as well as the other winning submission in the StudentCam Competition, can be viewed at studentcam.org for those who missed the airing on C-SPAN in April. atFishers.com / MAY 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 45
